M

idway through the first day of summer in a rowdy house not far from you, Jenny and I checked our calendars to see when the new school year begins. Now that we’ve settled into summer, I know the end will be here before we know it. Children will be sharing their “My Summer” collages, we’ll be longingly flipping through photos, and we’ll all repeatedly answer the question, “What did you do this summer?” It’s a question we could also pose to our church, so amidst our individual schedules I want to take this month’s “View” column and share about our summer as a family of faith – what I’ve seen and what I’m looking forward to seeing. Here are 10 things I’d put on First Baptist Greensboro’s “How I spent my summer” collage:

• Seniors graduated from high school amidst the blessings of their church family, which has told them of the love of God every stage of life. Many of these graduates are transitioning to college or work in the fall, so just as we blessed them at the start of the summer, remember to pray for them (and their families!) as the summer closes. • Summer Interns Kaylee, Will and Baker have been enriching the life of our church, with Kaylee relating to community partners, Will leading with our youth, and Baker working broadly throughout the ministry of the church. We’re blessed by the gifts of these young ministers and grateful to have them as a part of our extended church family for years to come. • The Pastoral Residency at First Baptist continues to thrive this summer, blessing John in his transition to First Baptist Winston-Salem, continuing to grow with Courtney’s gifts (including the early summer news of her winning a national preaching contest!), AND moving forward with our third Pastoral Resident, whom we will introduce to the church this month! • Missions ministry is occurring at every stage of our church’s life, through coordinated groups like youth and children, to community partners, to the Bessemer pre-K camp, to the “Friendly Garden” growing out our front door, to church members serving throughout the globe with the support from our church. And on that note… • Lesley-Ann Hix Tommey was commissioned as new Field Personnel with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship at the end of June and will be following a call to full-time missions in New York City in partnership with Metro Baptist Church. We pray for Lesley-Ann and her husband, Blake, in this transition and look forward to encouraging her work! • New Giving Options are available. With the active summer schedule and many growing ministries, your generosity and consistency in giving is vital. Remember the ways you can maintain financial commitment to the church, including our new “text-to-give” option, by visiting fbcgso.org/give

• Music and Arts ministry is inspiring and forming us this summer, with the weekly gifts of our Summer Choir, as well as special programming for our children and youth like June’s Worship in the Arts Camp, July’s All-State Youth Choir, and even a Theater Camp for preschoolers as the summer began. • The FBC Weekday School is preparing for a great start to the school year, led by our new Director, Amy Kirkman, who is providing excellent leadership to build on the strong 50 year foundation of our school. • Amidst all of these summer happenings, I’m especially excited to share that a New Associate Pastor will soon be introduced to the congregation! I can’t wait for our church to meet the candidate for the position of Associate Pastor: Missions and Community. A Call Weekend is planned for July 14-16. More info below! It’s almost – almost – enough to make me wish the summer could go on and on. We give thanks to God for the movement of the Spirit – for these views of it, and for all the evidence of the Spirit we can see – this season, and every season in the life of our community of faith.

Save the Date:

Introduction of Associate Pastor: Missions & Community– Sunday, July 16

With the enthusiastic recommendation of the Search Committee, the Personnel Committee and Pastor Alan Sherouse, the Candidate for Associate Pastor: Missions & Community will be introduced to the congregation on Sunday, July 16. The day will include worship, lunch and opportunities for the church to meet the Candidate and their family. Watch for more details and plan to be a part of this exciting day!

• Bible Study continues this month with a special guest, Dr. Jason Myers of Greensboro College. Dr. Myers is a gifted scholar and teacher and will be offering a Wednesday night class in July that ALL are encouraged to make a priority. More info on page 8. July 2017 | 3

We hope you will join us this fall! The Sole Hope organization was begun by a young couple from North Carolina. Read their inspiring story and find more information about the ministry at www.solehope.org

BF field personnel serve in the Middle East, where they plant churches, lead Bible studies, disciple new believers, focus on education and leadership development in local congregations as well as facilitate a variety of vital programs and ministries to children, women, and migrants. They are extremely involved in providing life-changing relief alongside local partners to Syrian refugees living in dire conditions. Due to the dangerous areas where these CBF field personnel reside in addition to the rising levels of persecution in the Middle East against Christians, their identities must remain anonymous. Their support both for their long-term presence in the region as well as their vital mission programming is desperately needed to ensure the continued presence of CBF in the region. Ministry includes: • Church Planting: Projects assist local believers in new churches as well as discipleship and educational opportunities. • Syrian Refugee Relief: This involves assisting the estimated 9,000 Syrians living in tent cities surrounding the city where CBF field personnel live. • Women and Children’s Ministry: Field personnel work in local orphanages and schools for those with differing special needs. • Agricultural Missions: This work in small villages particularly focuses on agricultural development in the aftermath of disasters. • Indigenous Outreach: CBF field personnel help place local Christian leaders in hard to reach places to start new churches, do outreach, and discipleship. Central NC Tour | July 16-23

he start of each new year for our high school youth choir members begins with the much anticipated audition or re-applying to participate in the North Carolina All-State Youth Choir tour. For one week in July, teenagers who love music meet at a college campus in NC to begin learning music and melding their voices together and getting to know new friends and reconnecting with returning All-Staters from all across North Carolina. The tour alternates between the East, West, or Central part of NC. This year it is Central North Carolina and the kids will be staying at Wingate University. This year’s theme is “I Am Not My Own,” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Pray for our four youth who will be participating in All-State this year as they travel North Carolina to serve and share the love of Christ: Kaitlyn Rainey, Lindley Sample, Cassie Starnes, and Lindsey Worsley.

hristmas in July? Not quite, but we are celebrating Advent this summer at Unidiversity. This year’s theme, “Christmas Presence” will give youth a chance to learn how to find the language to speak about their faith AND understand the incarnation as we look more deeply at Hope, Love, Peace, and Joy. This year’s proclaimer will be FBC’s Senior Pastor Alan Sherouse. Unidiversity: from many churches, one camp experience; from many personalities, one fellowship; from diverse joy and hurts, one time of love and laughter; from many worship styles, the presence of one Holy Spirit; from many spiritual experiences, the worship of one Lord. Please pray for the twenty youth who will be attending from FBC.
