Welcome to
Yield Alberta
A
nnual Crop producers in Alberta who participate in the AgriInsurance program contribute to a wealth of data housed by the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC). Beyond providing benefits through insurance, this information can be valuable to producers. Yield Alberta provides a snapshot of farm-level yields under actual growing conditions across the province by risk area. The third edition of Yield Alberta is brought to you through a joint venture between AFSC and Alberta Farmer.
The data
Farm-level data is fundamentally different from plot data such as the results reported in the Alberta Seed Guide. We would recommend that you consider both sources of information as you are making your decisions. The data presented in Yield Alberta is based on farm-reported yields in each of AFSC’s 22 risk areas. These yields are impacted by both management decisions and growing conditions. Yields are adjusted for dockage and test weight but not for quality. They are as reported by farmers or from an inspection on a claim or random audit.

YIELD ALBERTA

To ensure that there is a reasonable sample size and to protect the privacy of producers, varieties are only listed if they are grown by five or more producers in the risk area. A statistical rule of thumb is that a larger sample size (number of acres) leads to more representative results (yields). When there are few acres grown conditions can have a significant impact on the resulting average yields.
Finding the data online
This yield information is also available online through Ropin’ the Web at www.agric.gov.ab.ca/app96/loadrptinput. In 2011 the team at with Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) worked to make this more user-friendly for clients. By accessing this site and the Alberta Management Insights data additional information is also available. By entering your legal land description, producers may compare varieties by yield and cropping practices in an easy to use interface. We hope that this publication provides meaningful information for you. If you would like further information on this publication or help interpreting the data, please contact Curtis Boyd at AFSC through: Yield.Alberta@AFSC.ca

onsistency is not a word associated with agriculture or weather. Looking back, Alberta’s 2011 growing season was much like 2010 — a year of extremes. Winter was wetter than normal, while spring was dry and started slowly with cool temperatures. Summer continued with cool, cloudy coastal weather and a lot of rain including heavy downpours in some areas. Fall was the redeeming feature for many crops, with warm weather and little rain advancing maturity and allowing for a reasonable harvest. The past year reinforced that weather in Alberta is less than consistent. Changes in weather are frequent and common in Alberta and across the Prairies. Farmers have had to adapt to these patterns by shifting planting schedules or crop selections.

Yields
Provincial crop yields in 2011 for principal field crops were marginally better than 2010 but still far exceeded the 10-year average. The exceptions were yellow mustard and lentils, with yields approximately 13 per cent lower than the previous year. Hard red spring wheat averaged 48 bushels per acre on stubble, 19 per cent higher than the 10-year average and up five per cent from last year. The highest yields were in Risk Area 19 (Grande Prairie, Fairview, Falher area) at 63 bushels per acre. Barley on stubble averaged 70 bushels per acre, 11 bushels higher than the 10-year average. Yields were variable throughout the province with Risk Area 19 again having the highest average yields at 80 bushels per acre. Argentine canola yields averaged 38 bushels per acre on stubble,
higher than the 10-year average of 33 bushels. As in 2010, yields were consistent throughout the province, with the highest yields recorded in Risk Area 8 (Drumheller, Three Hills and Stettler area) at 46 bushels per acre. Field peas averaged 39 bushels per acre on stubble, unchanged from 2010 but 15 per cent higher than the 10-year average. The highest yields were again in Risk Area 8.
Quality Improved from 2010
Overall crop quality was very good throughout the province even though crops were seven to 10 days behind in maturity for most of the summer. Most of the province harvested 1 CW for wheat and barley and 1 CAN canola. However, northwestern Alberta and the Peace area experienced lower grades of hard red spring wheat and field peas.
Slow start, favourable finish
major crops were at least 15 per cent above average. Central Alberta had good to excellent soil moisture at the start of the growing season but cool weather into June caused delayed seeding. Once the crop was in the ground, development was delayed between seven to 10 days due to rainfall accumulations. Warmer weather in late summer and fall
A slow start to the year, excessive soil moisture and record or near record rainfall in southern Alberta led to delayed seeding or reseeding. In fact, approximately 285,000 acres, or five per cent of the acres in the region were unseeded. As the year progressed, the weather improved and yields for all of the

spurred growth and maturity resulting in yields for all major crops approximately 10 per cent above average. Farmers in northern Alberta started the year with dry soil conditions, low temperatures and a lack of rainfall, which delayed seeding and set crop development back one to two weeks behind normal. However, the area received significant to excessive precipitation during the growing season, leading to delayed crop development. As a result, quality was extremely variable across the region. Yields for the wheat and canola were approximately 20 per cent higher than normal but field peas were down nine per cent. Peace Region producers experienced a reversal in weather from 2010. Moderate to heavy precipitation prevailed throughout the growing season, setting crop development behind normal. Cool, wet weather during harvest resulted in much of the crop taken off in tough and damp condition. Despite the weather yields for the major crops were approximately 20 to 40 per cent higher than normal. In contrast, field pea yields dropped 15 to 30 per cent of normal.
Crop insurance down, hail average
Crop insurance claims mirror the favourable yields in the province. To date, claims for 2011 are estimated at $80 million, substantially down from $204 million in 2010. Hail is always a factor in Alberta, but claims for the year through AFSC were only slightly higher than both 2010 and the 10-year average.
Looking ahead
Although the beginning of the growing season looked gloomy, 2011 turned out to be a very good year for most crop producers. Crop yields and prices were higher and prospects for 2012 look quite good. Producers still need to be aware of potential risks that could change farm profitability. Sound risk management strategies are one of the keys to protecting the future of the farm business. 2012

hile reviewing various aspects of the crop insurance program, AFSC recently undertook a study to examine how closely yields of specific crops move in step with each other. Yield correlations are a good way of providing this measure. Correlations can vary from -1.0 to +1.0. A correlation of -1.0 would, in this case, indicate yields move in exactly the opposite direction to each other, while a correlation of +1.0 would indicate yields move perfectly in step with each other. This article reviews yield correlations among the primary crops grown in Alberta and between different regions and soil zones. This information provides a perspective on how crops respond to their growing conditions. Yield correlations are provided for major field crops produced on dry land in Alberta: • • • • • • • •
Red spring wheat Durum wheat CPS wheat Extra strong wheat Barley Canola Oats Field peas
Yield correlations for the above crops are examined from two vantage points: • By AFSC Sales Regions (map 1), and • By major soil zone (map 2)
With respect to the regional comparison, the sales regions are as follows: • • • •
Southern Region Central Region Northern Region, excluding the Peace The Peace Region
With respect to the soil zone comparison, yield correlations are provided for: • • • • • 8

YIELD ALBERTA

Main Underlying Considerations Before looking at the yield correlation tables, some important points need to be considered: • The correlation of two of the named crops in each of the attached tables were obtained by including paired yield records for all clients who insured the crops in the same year and at least 100 acres of each crop were insured. For example, in comparing HRS wheat yields and barley yields, if a given producer had one year of experience in which he insured at least 100 acres of both crops in the same year, the data counted as one observation; if less than 100 acres of one or both of the crops were insured, the observation was not counted. If a client had five years of experience insuring at least 100 acres of both crops in the same year, five observations were counted. • Yield correlations are based on yields insured during the period 2000 to 2010. • Yield correlations for two crops are only included in the attached tables if there are at least 50 observations. • Yields on fallow and on stubble are included when both yields are on stubble, or both yields are on fallow — not when one is on fallow and one is on stubble. Commercial and pedigreed crops have also been included. • If a client is insuring two crops in the same year, but one or both have hail damage, the observation is excluded. • Yields of each crop in the pairing have been standardized by reflecting the yield relative to the client’s normal yield. As a result the correlations reflect the movement of the ratios of yield to normal. • All yields reflect adjustments for grade. • For the soil zone analysis, all yields were allocated to a specific soil zone at the quarter section level. Specifically, if a quarter section centroid is in the brown soil zone, the quarter section is treated as being on brown soil. Continued on page 11

significant difference between yield correlations; primarily because of the inherent variability of crop yields. Yields of various types of wheat are not always more closely correlated to yields of other types of wheat than the other major crops. Oat and field pea yields tend to be least correlated to other crop yields (not always).
Yield Correlations by Major Soil Zone The following tables highlight yield correlations, by major soil zone:
Salient Observations: In the Southern and Central Regions, yield correlations for the major crops generally range from +0.6 to +0.8; compared to +0.6 to +0.7 in the Northern Region and +0.45 to +0.60 in the Peace. There are a number of possible reasons for this; a greater likelihood of snowedunder crops and wildlife damage, amongst others. Within a given region, aside from the highest and lowest yield correlations, there is in general no statistically Table 1

Salient Observations: Yield correlations generally range from +0.6 to +0.8 on the brown, dark brown and thin black soil zones; between +0.5 and +0.7 on black and black-dark gray soils and between +0.45 and +0.60 on gray soils. As the black and gray soil zones tend to be concentrated in the northern part of the province, the lower correlations are likely related in large part to a greater likelihood of snowed under crops and wildlife damage, differences in growing conditions, the production window and associated physiological responses of crops. As with the regional analysis: yields of various types of wheat are not always more closely correlated to yields of other types of wheat, than the other major crops; and oat and field pea yields tend to be least correlated to other crop yields (not always).

MYTH
FACT
To get the benefit of superior weed control, I have to put up with glyphosate tolerant volunteers.
Genuity® Roundup Ready® systems, with some of the highest yielding canola hybrids AND superior weed control, now also come with effective and economical solutions for managing volunteers.
Don’t compromise. Get all the yield potential plus superior weed control of Genuity Roundup Ready systems, without the worry of volunteers. Managing volunteers is easy by following good agronomic practices including the use of an effective tank mix in your pre-seed burnoff. In particular, Heat® herbicide, ahead of peas, lentils, oats, wheat, barley, soybeans and corn, and 2,4-D ahead of wheat and barley are two of the most effective and economical tank mix partners with glyphosate, and can significantly improve the control of glyphosate tolerant volunteers. Visit www.roundup.ca and click on “Weed Management” for more information. Leave the myths behind. See your local retailer for details, or go to www.genuitycanola.ca.

Every year, you hear about yield comparisons between seed products grown in test plots around the countryside. The problem is, they’re often not tested under real-world conditions. When it comes right down to it, the only results that count are the ones from your fields. At Pioneer Hi-Bred, we test our genetics where it really matters: in fields close to yours. In 2011, over 1000 large-scale Proving Ground™ plots were grown across Western Canada. This is more than any other seed company. These canola, corn and soybean trials are grower-managed under real-world growing conditions and farming practices. Our goal is to help you evaluate product performance on your operation, so that together we can help ensure we position the right Pioneer® brand seed product on every acre you grow. For yield results, talk with your local Pioneer Hi-Bred sales rep or visit:
