JULES ACHILLE NOËL
French, 1810-1881
Jules Achille Noël was a gouache painter, watercolorist, pastellist, lithographer, and draftsman who primarily focused on maritime scenes. However, he also painted landscapes, genre scenes, and church interiors. Noël studied under Cherioux in Brest, his hometown, before moving to Paris to pursue his painting career. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1840 to 1879, and he received several medals. Noël painted en plein air, and his preferred settings were the coasts of Brittany and Normandy. He was most successful in his representations of the Norman coast, and in this category, he is often compared to Eugène Isabey. Noël’s artworks are widely known for their lively nature and charming quality. He was very talented in capturing the varying effects of light in both gouache and watercolor. Noël’s genre scenes provide a picturesque social documentation of 19th century coastal life. Jules Achille Noël’s work can be found: Musée du Louvre, Paris; Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes, France; Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper, France; Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Cohue, Vannes, France; Collection du conseil général du Morbihan, Vannes; Musée Magnin, Dijon; National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, United Kingdom; Bowes Museum, County Durham, United Kingdom; Musée des Arts et de l’Enfance, Fécamp, France; Musée des Terre-Nuevas et de la Pèche, Fécamp; Museum of the National Academy of Design, New York; Chi-Mei Museum, Taiwan; Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Enschede, Netherlands; Town Collection of Hennebont, France; Town Collection of Landernau, France; and museums in Bernay, Brest, Briançon, Castres, Chantilly, Chartres, Chaumont, La Rochelle, Mulhouse, Nancy, Rheims, Tours, Angoulême, Besançon, Cherbourg, and Bordeaux, all in France. 58

ALEXANDRE RENÉ VERON
French, 1826-1897
Alexandre René Veron was a French landscape painter who studied under the neo-classicist artist, Hippolyte “Paul” Delaroche, and with the landscapist Charles François Daubigny, whom he admired and imitated artistically. Veronfirst travelled to Barbizon at the age of eighteen and was so captivated with what he experienced that he painted only landscapes after his visit. In 1848, at the age of twenty-two, he had his Salon debut with two landscapes; the first depicted a farm in Bourron-Marlotte, just a few miles south of the Fontainebleau forest, and the second was a study of the Gorge du Loup. Over the next three decades, Veronexclusively exhibited landscapes at the salon. His preferred location to paint was the forest of Fontainebleau, but he also painted scenes in Auvers-sur-Oise, Pontoise, Crécy-en-Brie, Senlis, Osny, Agenteuil, Asnières and St-Valery-sur-Somme. These locations meant that Veron painted many of the coastlines and landscapes of the French countryside. His work can be found in the Musée Daubigny in Auvers-sur-Oise, France; Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Rollins College, Florida; The Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dijon, Nantes, la Mans, Lyon, Perigueux, and Saint-Lo, Dole, in France; Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, County Durham, England; Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, Birkenhead, UK.

AUGUSTE PAUL CHARLES ANASTASI
French, 1820-1889
The student of the great French painters, Eugène Delacroix, Camille Corot, and Hippolyte “Paul” Delaroche, Anastasi worked extensively with the Barbizon School and painted numerous views of the forest of Fontainebleau. Although famous as a Barbizon painter, he also traveled in Northern France, especially in Brittany, and in Italy, from where he brought back several landscapes. Anastasi had a successful career and enjoyed the support of his peers, the art critics, and the public. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1868. However, in 1870, Anastasi became completely blind. Princess Mathilde (Napoleon’s niece) sheltered him at her Saint-Gratien estate. His friends organized a sale of his work, which generated enough money to keep him out of need until his death in Paris at age 69. His work can be found in Musée du Louvre, Paris; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, California; Harvard University Art Museum, Massachusetts; the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France; Musée national du château, Compiègne, France; Musée Antoine Vivenel, Compiègne, France; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille, France; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Marseille, France; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Chambéry, France; Musée du vieux château, Laval, France; Musée des Ursulines, Mâcon, France; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Angers, France; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nantes, France; as well as museums in Antwerp, Belgium, and in the French towns of Besançon, Bourges, Mulhouse, Rennes, Rheims, and Valence.

147 JULES BRETON
Étude pour Le rappel des glaneuses 1857 Oil on Cardboard, 6.8 x 13 in. signed lower right “Jules Breton” Gallery price: $28,000
JULES BRETON
French, 1827-1906
Jules Breton studied initially under Félix de Vigne, whose daughter he married in 1858. He later studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, went on to work at Martin Drolling’s studio in Paris and joined the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under the direction of Horace Vernet and Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres in 1847. Breton had originally decided to specialize in genre painting, as his first submissions to the Salons of 1849 and 1850 show, but these were not very well received and the following year he began to concentrate exclusively on landscapes. In 1854 he moved back to Courrières and between 1862 and 1866 made several visits to south and south-west France and Italy. Between 1868 and 1890 he spent many months each year at Douarnenez in Brittany. Breton was a regular exhibitor at Salons from 1849 and also exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle. In 1853 he had his first success at the Salon; in 1855 he was awarded a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle, in 1857 he received a silver medal at the Salon, at the 1859 salon he won gold for The Gleaners (now in The National Gallery of Ireland). In 1867 he received a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle, and in 1872 he was awarded a medal of honor at the Salon. His Salon exhibits were increasingly admired and his paintings were regularly purchased by the state and by collectors. Wisely, Breton did not let this rapid success go to his head but applied himself to perfecting his technique. He also took part in many foreign exhibitions. Breton was decorated with the Légion d’Honneur and the Order of Leopold of Belgium. In 1867 he was made an officer of the Légion d’Honneur and was promoted to commander in 1885. In 1866 he was made a member of the Institute of France. He was a jury member at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and 1900. Breton has rightly been described as a Realist tempered by a poet. He did not share the energetic technique of Bastien Lepage, nor his sense of truth. Breton’s Realism stopped at his choice of subject, his interpretation always being tinged with a certain idealistic charm. However, he did not falsify nature; he simply highlighted its happier side. His technique was Classical, very studied and impeccably precise, and his use of color was always carefully chosen and accurate. His works can be found in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, France; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Massachusetts; the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper, France; The National Gallery of Art, Dublin, Ireland; and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. 62

He was inspired by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Theodore Rousseau’s landscapes of Barbizon early on but is known for creating risky and bold compositions painted in gouache and watercolor which were independent in style and of influence. Cabié became a pupil of the realist landscape painter Henri Harpignies and was formally introduced to the Barbizon School early in his artistic training. He later joined the Naturalist movement of Port-Berteau, a small and short-lived school that focused on plein air landscape painting, under the instruction of Hippolyte Pradelles, one of the founders. Cabié debuted at the Salon des Artistes Français of 1887 and earned several awards and medals; he was eventually appointed Chevalier de la legion d’honneur. He was the chef-de-file (head) of landscape painting at the Saintonge School before moving to Bordeaux where he produced most of his landscapes until his death in 1939. JULES DUPRÉ
French, 1811-1889
Jules Dupré’s career as a painter began in 1831. He moved to Paris and became friends with the artist Louis Cabat and took lessons from Jean Michel Diebolt, once a pupil of Jean Louis DeMarne. His celebrated work Indiana appeared at the Salon in 1832. In Paris, Dupré made the acquaintance of a wide circle of artists and writers. He made friends with artists of the then-flourishing 1830 School, painters such as Constant Troyon, Charles François Daubigny, Jean François Millet and Paul Huet and formed a long-standing friendship with Théodore Rousseau. In 1834, Dupré accepted an invitation from Lord Grave to travel to England, where he visited London, Plymouth and Southampton, and came into contact with the work of John Constable, J.W.M. Turner, John Crome, Richard Parkes Bonington and other English masters. On his return, he showed a view of Southampton at the 1835 Salon to great acclaim. He received a third-class medal in 1835 and was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1849; however, he stopped contributing to the annual Salons for several years from 1839 onwards, only showing again in 1852. There then followed another long absence from public exhibition; his work was not seen in the Salons again until 1867, the year of the first Exposition Universelle. 156 PAUL LOUCHET
L’arbre vert 1897 Oil on Canvas (relined), 53.8 x 69.5 in. signed and dated lower left “Paul Louchet 1897” Gallery price: $17,500
PAUL LOUCHET
French, 1854-1936
Paul Louchet studied under Jules Lefebvre and Henri Harpignies and exhibited his work at the Salon in Paris. Something of a Renaissance man, Paul Louchet excelled in the decorative arts and acquired renown for his skill at engraving bronze. He was elected president of the bronze manufacturers’ guild and mayor of his small town of Herblay, about 25 km outside of Paris, a few years later. However, he resigned after the tragic and sudden death of his 15-year-old daughter. She died from a regional typhoid epidemic allegedly caused by the sewage dumped on fields near the town. Louchet became an outspoken environmentalist, organizing public protests and even suing the city of Paris for his daughter’s death. When he lost the case, he turned to painting the landscape he loved. Louchet is associated with the French Barbizon School, sharing their wish to depict nature without any additional adornments. His paintings “bear the mark of melancholic poetry: without any unnecessary glitter or pomposity, but with an exactness of touch and a deep sincerity.” Another great lover of nature, Paul Cézanne, said, “When I judge art, I take my painting and put it next to a God-made object like a tree or flower. If it clashes, it is not art.” By this standard, Louchet is indeed a great artist. Paul Louchet’s art can be found in the following museums: Musée du Louvre, Paris, France; Musée des Art Décoratifs, Paris, France; Musée de Sèvres, France; Brighton Museum, East Sussex, England; Musée Christofle, Paris, France. 71
157 EDMA MORIZOT AKA EDMA MORISOT-PONTILLON
Soleil couchant Oil on Canvas (relined), 21.25 x 25.6 in. signed lower left “E. Morizot” Gallery price: $20,000
EDMA MORISOT-PONTILLON (also spelled Morizot)
French 1839-1921
Marie Edma Caroline Morisot, sister of Berthe Morisot, was a French landscape painter. She often was the muse for many well-known artists including Berthe, Edouard Manet, and Henri Fantin-Latour. In 1860, she began to study under Camille Corot and, at his suggestion, began painting en plein air. Edma occasionally painted portraits but favored landscapes painted in the Barbizon tradition. She tended to paint small female figures in her landscapes as well. Her Salon debut — two landscapes — was in the spring of 1864. She exhibited her landscapes regularly in the official Salon until 1869.

160 H. PASQUIER
Femme à l’abat jour 1905 Pastel on Paper, 13 x 18.2 in. signed and dated lower left “H. Pasquier 05” Gallery price: $19,000
H. PASQUIER
French, early 20th c
Little is documented on H. Pasquier, but there is reason to assume (based primarily on subject matter and style) that this pastel artist is a French woman active during the Belle Époque in Paris. In particular the paintings seem to reflect the Edwardian era – the first decade of the new century. Pasquier’s pastel drawings feature young women in intimate environments. Some pieces completed between 1904-1907 are La Conversation, Woman in White at a Window, and Femme a L’Abat Jour. The latter shows an affluent young woman in typical Edwardian garb at rest on a Louis Quinzestyle lounge sofa. The other pieces appear to have been drawn during the same session. This might explain why the artist chose to use pastel as her medium since they are easy to use and transport and don’t require the drying time of painting. Pastels gained in popularity in France during the mid 19th century and that popularity continued into the early 20th. Pasquier always included a table lamp as the single or primary light source in her drawings. Artists from the Edwardian era were interested in scientific and political aspects of the period which signaled modernity: Pasquier included the electric light and painted woman at a time when they were just beginning to be educated and work outside the home. The artist represents the Belle Époque with sweet compositions and themes that are reflective of the beautiful era which ended at the start of the first World War.

161 HENRI LEBASQUE
La Joconde Oil on Canvas, 30.7 x 20.9 in. unsigned Gallery price: $64,000
HENRI LEBASQUE
French, 1865-1937
Henri Lebasque studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Angers. After moving to Paris in 1886, he studied briefly under Léon Bonnat and then under Jacques Fernand Humbert; he assisted the latter in the decoration of the Panthéon. He showed at the Salon de la Société Nationale in 1896, and later at the Salon des Indépendents and the Salon d’Automne. He took part in the following collective exhibitions: Salon des Indépendents, 1886; Salon des Artistes Français; and later the Salon d’Automne, of which he was a founding member in 1903 and on whose committee he sat until his death. A set of his works was shown in 1937 at Maîtres de l’Art Indépendent (Masters of Independent Art) at the Petit Palais, Paris. In 1957, 20 years after his death, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice, and in 1981 his works were exhibited at St-Paul-de-Vence. This piece was in the collection of Ernest Bonnault, a prominent French collector. It is mentioned in the book P. Vitry, Henry Lebasque, Paris, 1928, pp 24-25. It is included and illustrated in the catalogue raisonné: D. Bazetoux, Henri Lebasque catalogue raisonné, 2008, no. 486. Madame Denis Bazetoux estimates the date of the piece to be 1895-1896. His works can be found in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris; Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris; Musée des Beaux-Art, Lille, France; Petit Palais, Geneva, Switzerland; and in collections in the cities of Angers, Lyon, Strasbourg and Nantes in France and in Detroit, Illinois in the USA.

162 LOUIS ARBANT
Nature morte avec raisins Oil on Canvas, 35.25 x 46 in. signed lower left “Arbant” Gallery price: $15,000
LOUIS ARBANT
French, mid 19th c.
Louis Arbant was born in Màcon (Saône-et-Loire), France. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, the same city where most of his paintings were produced; he exhibited his still lifes at the Paris Salon from 1849-1879. He was a prolific still life artist and occasionally he painted landscapes. The still lifes are carefully arranged combinations of floral, fruit, and slaughtered animals; these objects he frequently illustrated were common in France’s ordinary household. Arbant prefers to radiate his colorful still life objects with strong light which results in his trademark smoky dark background. He mainly worked with oil and watercolor. Arbant is one of few 19th century French artists who specialized in still life paintings. Because of some commercial success, several artists had begun to paint them in addition to their regular repertoire. This, combined with the Academy’s new admiration for still-life artists at mid-century resulted in a still-life revival in France and a considerable demand for the work in France and England. Later 19th century artists like Cezanne and Manet are credited with the ongoing success of still life painting. They painted still lifes as ‘non-illustrative of discourse,’ separating the art from literature, poetry, or moralism — all of which had previously characterized the genre. Arbant’s paintings can be found in the Musée des Beaux-arts in Lyon, France 76
163 CHARLES GILBERT- MARTIN
Les fleurs de l’été Oil on Canvas, 19.7 x 24 in. signed lower right “Gilbert Martin” Gallery price: $13,000
CHARLES GILBERT-MARTIN
French, 1839-1905
Charles Gilbert-Martin was a French caricaturist, journalist, and still-life artist active during the 19th century. He was widely known for his satirical magazines, Le Philosophe and Le Don Quichotte, both founded by him. He founded an additional ten magazines and collaborated on another ten! After graduating from the College of Blaye, he left for Paris in 1862 to pursue a literary career. In May 1867, he founded the satirical magazine Le Philosophe alongside the painter Jean-Paul Laurens. He wrote under the pen name Louis Lemaire and Tribelg for a short period but is one of the few caricaturists of his generation to be known by his real name. He signed all of his floral still lifes by his given name as well.

If the purchase price is not paid or the article not removed from the premises by the winning bidder, the auctioneer holds the purchaser responsible for the cost of the article, plus all associate costs of sale and warehousing. The gallery does not provide separate appraisals for the articles purchased at auctions. Your invoice serves as your appraisal. To prevent missed deliveries and inconvenience in settlement of a purchase, no lot may be transferred. Because many of the artworks sold are fine art limited-edition prints, the auctioneer reserves the right to sell more than one of each lot during the auction. In the case when there is more than one image sold, the auctioneer will decide which bidder takes the art from the auction. The bidder awarded the art will take the art upon departure. All additional pieces sold at auction will be ready for pickup or shipment to the address noted on your auction invoice within six to eight weeks. Shipment of all items purchased will be made to any point designated by the successful bidder pursuant to, and as part of, the contract of sale. Shipping, packing and insurance are at the buyer’s expense. A charge will be incurred for each lot shipped by FRANKLIN BOWLES GALLERIES. $350.00 will be charged for each lot shipped within the United States, and $500.00 will be charged for each lot shipped outside the United States. All shipping charges are due and payable at the conclusion of the auction. If the foregoing conditions or any other applicable conditions herein are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to us by law, including, but without limitation the right to hold the purchaser liable for the purchase price, we at our option, may either cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for the payment of any deficiency plus all costs and expenses of both sales, all other charges due hereunder and incidental damages. 4. We reserve the right to withdraw any property at any time before actual sale. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the catalogue and no lot shall be divided at sale. 5. We reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, or in the event the auctioneer doubts the validity of any bid, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, our sales records shall be conclusive in all respects. 6. If we are prevented by fire, theft or for any other reason whatsoever from delivering any property to the purchaser, our liability shall be limited to the sum actually paid therefore by the purchaser. 7. Most lots are sold subject to a reserve; a confidential minimum amount for which the seller is willing to sell a work of art. In no case does the reserve exceed the listed gallery price. 8. FRANKLIN BOWLES GALLERIES may bid and assign bid numbers for its own account at any auction (even though it may be required to pay a buyer’s premium or other charges that other bidders may be required to pay) and may have access to information concerning the lots and items contained therein that is not otherwise available to the public. Any conflict of interest or claim of competitive advantage resulting there from is expressly waived by all participants in the sale. 9. Payment terms: All items are to be paid for immediately by (a) Cash, (b) Personal check and approved credit, and/or (c) VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club or Discover Card. ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD AS IS and ALL SALES ARE FINAL.
ABSENTEE BIDS As a service to those wishing to place absentee bids, we will accept such bids in advance of sale by telephone, or in writing, on bidding forms available from FRANKLIN BOWLES GALLERIES Art Consultants. Buy bids will be accepted. All bids must state the highest bid price the bidder is willing to pay. As noted above, a 19% premium payable by the purchaser will be added to the bid price. In the event identical bids are submitted, the earliest will take precedence. Absentee bids shall be executed in competition with other absentee bids, any applicable reserve and bids from the audience. Sale results and selling prices for any lot may be obtained by calling your Art Consultant during normal business hours.
