Foreword
After almost 40 years in the art business, Franklin Bowles Galleries is embracing the 21st Century by premiering our first online catalog! I think you will truly enjoy “clicking” through the pages to see the exceptional collection of new work that my longtime friend, Larry Horowitz, has created for us.
Alissa Horowitz and Victor Lazaro
Earlier this month, the Horowitz family and another important artistic family, that of Claude and Margot Lazar, were joined in marriage. Alissa Horowitz and Victor Lazaro were married on Cape Cod in the historic town of Wellfleet. The Horowitz family has long had a summer home there and Larry has used the surrounding environs as inspiration for many of his memorable paintings over the years. Recently, Deborah Forman, a journalist and art historian, included Larry’s work in a beautiful book of Cape Cod artists titled, Images of Land and Sea. For over a century, artists have been drawn to this region, attracted by the spectacular land and seascapes.
As an artist, Larry has always been open to new ideas; he’s exceptional in his willingness to stretch beyond his comfort zone and constantly explore new artistic techniques. In this exhibition, Larry has given us an enticing new medium, which I particularly love -- a series of hand-made books of watercolors depicting the California coast. They were created while he was on one of his infamous road trips, traveling south down Route 1 from San Francisco to San Diego. The presentation is charming, and the watercolors themselves are This new book of Cape Cod artists includes work by Larry Horowitz

loosely painted and form a lovely travel diary. Artist’s books have been made since the early 1800s and are coveted by discretionary collectors; the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco was Handmade watercolor book depicting the California coast the recent recipient of the David and Reva Logan collection of 300 modern art books. In addition, Larry has tried an interesting new format which we have used on our invitation. Larry tells me that these oval compositions are designed to lead the viewer’s eye in a circular motion around the canvas rather than fix on a single point.

Larry Horowitz has always shunned the industrial in favor of bucolic or agrarian subjects. He has noted: “The more I paint, the more I realize that my work has a lot to do with intimacy and man’s reflective relationship with nature.” He often defines that relationship through the use of light which he manipulates to create tone and mood. In Secret Beach, his subject is a beach and trees, but the focus and feel are of the full daylight, diffused through the humid atmosphere of the coast. One not only sees the beach, one feels it.
This is true of all his work. Horowitz allows us to experience with him our relationship to nature. His motto could be, “have paintbrush, will travel,” and I, for one, am grateful to be along for the ride!

his painting is a subject I have depicted many times. After years of study, I have distilled its essence to the most important elements: the setting sun silhouetted by a copse of trees reflected in still waters creates a strong sense of emotional intimacy. – Larry Horowitz
