STUDENT’S RESIDENCE The proximity with the river and the waters of Rio Douro, turned the facade of a student’s residence into an organic and dynamic architecture through the complex composition of its modules. An ever-changing architecture during the day and an eye-popping experience when observed from the other side of the river.

MODULE Built in an abstract field, this housing module apartment (T2/T3, each one with entrance from the ground level), was inspired by Piet Mondrian’s abstract paintings. The colors and geometry shift architecture into a third dimensional painting.

UNIT HOUSING
Projected for Rotunda da Boavista, the collective housing would rise in the city’s new heart of contemporary architecture, which includes Casa da Música and Oporto’s METRO and Bus Station. The city, made of the old and the new, would have the opportunity to create a contemporary center with mixed services and different housing typologies. Later in the process, one allotment would be developped, being it the one facing east side, a simple T2/T3 housing module with vertical access. Due to its position siding a high traffic avenue and facing sunrise, the building had an open dialogue between interior/exterior through deep balconies integrated in the facade’s plan, but at the same time protecting the private space of your home.

CONTEMPORARY HOUSING DESIGN
The city’s museum. The local plan is characterized by a fragile and inconsistent architecture. The surroudings are mainly warehouses, although there’s a geometric and regular urban mesh. What is sought to achieve is always a reaction: to what is there now, and to what would come - which we don’t know. So playing “safe” was a constant during the process. In its development, the result was a white box, denying the surrondings, only openned for the main entrance. In the interior, a large patium would turn all the activities into it. The museum would remain as a silent and misterious urban piece on the outside, to be fully discovered on the inside.

In a strategy to re-organize and re-design the urban space of Campanhã, the project intended to provoke a completely new concept for a heart-rising city centre. The actual situation of unoccupied warehouses explicits a necessity of modernise almost everything, which lead the project to “start something radical and new”. With that in mind, and with the central train station in its frontier, the goal was to create an enterily new dynamic of supported services for the zone such as a Low Cost Hotel, companies headquarters, street shopping, restoration and car parking. The up-rising terrain allowed the creation of urban platforms to accomodate the program needed. Its architecture, equipped with the latest technologies, would project “media facades” and smart surfaces related to the urban space, contributing to an avant-garde feel resulting in a dynamic and exciting ambience. An urban space designed by its architecture and an architecture related and though specifically for this urban space.

Architectural Master Thesis oriented by Architect Pedro Gadanho
MEDIA FACADE Media Facade is a new and recent architectural language introduced by the use of digital media displays on the surface of buildings. With the integration of a digital medium in the project’s development, the turns surface into a dynamic and a communicative membrane, which also represents a new aesthetic, functional and evolucionary expression on the discipline. For the subject, the historical geneses and concept evolution explores what a media facade is or can be, as an integrated element in architecture. The link between publicity and animated lights are the first approach of architecture as a media facade. “The simulated city” in the 90s, as Toyo Ito describes, represents today’s contemporary immaterial space of information that a media facade can translate into a formal building. The aesthetic expressions of an imateriallity are well known in the work of Jean Nouvel, as on the essays of Venturi’s “Architecture as signs and systems”. The integration of a “monitor effect” on the surface follows an “augmentation” of architecture as a cultural and informative building, generator of a new urban space. “What happens when tv leaves home and goes back to public space?” is the question made about the perception of architecture as it is envelopped by this media language in the 20th century; Projects like Peter Cook’s BIX, realities:united’s Spots, Led Action Façade, or NBuilding relate new functions of a digital display integrated in the surface, while Diller Scofidio’s Blur or Nox’s D-Tower explore architecture as an expressive medium to find relations between tecnology and new ways of incorporating space and the invisible networks. “2010; A Space Odissey”: today, we may think of “media facade” beyond an ordinary tv set attached to a building; there are new opportunities of thinking the physical structure of architecture and the imaterial flux as a whole.
COMPETITIONS
Tokyo Fashion Museum
promoted by arquitectum.com 2010 in collaboration with Catarina Ribeiro, Cassandra Carvas, Inês Pires and Tiago Atalaia A fashion museum for Omotesando Street, Tokyo. Famous for its fashion stores, the competition asked for a vertical fashion museum. Our project re-creates a vertical street, in an expand gesture of the one where it would rise. Walking through ramps, you could visit the different rooms, while contemporary fashion is shown by you in the central strip of the building. “Fashion is You, Here and Now”
re:place, re:play
promoted by Dédalo Magazine 2010 in collaboration with Elisa Sartor and Tiago Atalaia To “replace” a non-place. The purposal tried to create in non-places (a mural and an abstract entrance cube), a “reminder” of its existence. Even though they are meant to be a simple passage through, our installation intended to alert people for its importance. It would be a large media wall, sensitive to movement that would react asking questions like “Where are you going?”, “Who are you?” to the passers-by.
GO! Architecture
promoted by FAUP 2010
The competition challenged to design a cinematheque in 48 hours. In a reinterpretation of Casa de Cinema de Manoel de Oliveira, the main rooms would work like giant cinematographers. The building, an archive of cinema, projects its memories into the city, turning them a part of it. The silent images in the exterior, a reference to the early mute cinema, allows the cinematec experience to expand beyond its physical boundaries, bringing to life the surrounding ruins, and connecting to the other side of the river.
CTS WITH LOVE
the idea is to crea te contemporary city postcards of a cit y’s architecture alo ng with the phrase “F ROM (CITY) WITH LOVE”, playing wi th a local reference .
PERSONAL AND ONGOING PROJ E
FROM A CITY
Imagined Houses BOOK I invited some architect friends to write a short story of an imagined house. Since our work as an architect is to create/communicate/debate ideas, i thought this could be a nice exercise to expand our imagination through words instead of drawings or images. The only one thing in common between stories would be the concept of a “house”. And with it, a little short story. The callenge has been well received and accepted by those who i’ve sent, and even got an interest in others that are not architects but like to write. A house with clowns around the hall and no windows, the house with many paths or the house up rised few meters from nowhere. Nowadays, our mind is the only one who can actually build: free of taxes, of burocracies, or even materiallity. Let the words write walls of phrases, build floors of paragraphs and rooms of imagination!

The site belongs to a small medieval city by the Douro river. It has strong traditional values. Our research led us to understand the relevance of its peculiar traditional values regarding family relations and its interactions inside a house, most importantly highlighting its social space. Furthermore, the city has a strong relation to the river and its unique landscape. This, plus the fact that it is a holliday house, led us to reinterpret cultural values plus the landscape so as to reproduce the spatiality of the river cliffs, placing the social space in a sort of meander offering extreme perspectives. As the private space is allowed to open-have views to the social area, the social space is in a state of limbo between interior and exterior spaces, having the possibility to open completely to the outside, complete transparence. The surrounding site was modeled accordingly, allowing for entrances, views and sun exposure.
