This year closes out a historic one for the cruise industry, with another record number of cruisers projected to sail – beating the previous record set last year and putting more distance between 2019.

But the historic figures that matter much more to me personally are the record economic impacts from cruise tourism. In fact, The 2023-2024 cruise year generated $4.27 billion in direct expenditures – 27% higher than the previous record – along with over 94,000 jobs paying more than $1.27 billion in wage income in the 33 destinations that participated in the recent study by Business Research & Economic Advisers.

As anyone reading knows, this represents so much for so many lives and livelihoods –as does another thing close to my heart: the FCCA Foundation’s relaunch and the restarting of programs that benefit underprivileged children throughout our partner destination. This edition is packed with some of those initiatives.

Of course, the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show in Sint Maarten takes the spotlight, with full coverage including the input from cruise line presidents and above like Christopher Ivy, CEO, Margaritaville at Sea; Richard Sasso, Chairman, MSC Cruises USA; Harry Sommer, President & CEO, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.; John Padgett, President, Princess Cruises; and Michael Bayley, President & CEO, Royal Caribbean International.

Travel & Cruise and Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) would like to welcome and reintroduce the accomplished global maritime leader, Charles “Bud” Darr, who was appointed President and CEO of CLIA, effective February 3, 2025.

Darr succeeds Kelly Craighead, who, earlier this year, announced her plans to leave the organization at year’s end – and returns to CLIA after previously holding the post of Senior Vice President of Technical and Regulatory Affairs from 2010 to 2017.

He joins CLIA from MSC Group where he served as Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs for more than seven years. He has also held positions within the U.S. Coast Guard, including Deputy Chief of Maritime & International Law, and he has served in the U.S. Navy, Merchant Marine, and Coast Guard.

In his role as President and CEO, Darr will lead the next phase of CLIA’s global strategy at an important time for the industry as the cruise sector builds on a strong and responsible growth trajectory in support of its 2050 sustainability targets. A highly respected figure in the maritime world, Darr brings exceptional maritime experience and outstanding relationships across the global cruise industry and its related trade, equipment, ports, shipbuilders, and service providers.

“I am thrilled to be returning to CLIA, and I am grateful for the confidence that the Global Executive Committee and CLIA-member lines have placed in me,” Darr commented. “With the dynamic changes and opportunities ahead, this industry is poised to set new pathways and raise the bar for innovation and sustainability. I am eager to harness our collective expertise to propel us toward an even brighter future. Together, we will navigate the global complexities and reach significant milestones.”

Darr will draw on his extensive experience from the broader maritime community, including his involvement with the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), BIMCO, UK Chamber of Shipping, Liberian Shipowners Council, SEA-LNG, Society for Gas as Marine Fuel, World Shipping Council, IMO World Maritime University, Cruise Safety and Sustainability Forum, and the Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI), to enhance CLIA’s standing worldwide.

Darr began his education in Submarine Nuclear Engineering and later obtained his formal undergraduate education at the US Merchant Marine Academy. During his service with the US Coast Guard, he studied law at the George Washington University Law School.

Spotlight on Alexander Gumbs, CEO of Port St. Maarten Group

On the heels of hosting the FloridaCaribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Cruise Conference & Trade Show, Port St. Maarten Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Alexander Gumbs recently talked to Travel & Cruise to give an exclusive look into some of the plans to seize the momentum and navigate to a brighter future, as well as some of the ways cruise tourism and the Port impact the lives and livelihoods of so many throughout the ‘Friendly Island’ of St. Maarten-Saint-Martin.

Before looking to the future, Gumbs started with the past. “We have been celebrating the 60th anniversary of cruise after the official inauguration of the cruise pier in 1964. If you look at how the product has transitioned from then to now, even from the vessel standpoint from the size to the amenities on board, but also the type of guests, Port St. Maarten has come a very long way over six decades.”

He pointed out that after that inauguration, there was a “great product up until 1995,” a year he called “the pinnacle for the port” for being a modern-day port in terms of the pier and port facilities – but also when Hurricane Luis ravaged the destination and Port.

“Right after Hurricane Luis, the planning and construction started,” he

said and echoed the theme of resilience displayed by so many Caribbean destinations and the cruise industry itself over the years, from natural disasters and pandemics to recessions.

He continued that the first phase was finished around 1999-2000, with a second phase in 2008-2009 that resulted in the port being able to handle the largest ships in the world – “then of course there was Hurricane Irma in 2017…

and that has also now caused us where we are today looking ahead, looking at the future in terms of restrengthening some of our maritime infrastructure, but also based on the trends in the cruise industry.”

One of those trends he pointed to is the large number of large ships on the order book. “Currently we can only accommodate two of the Oasis Plus class ships, but if you look ahead… several of

those ships will be in the Caribbean simultaneously in the coming years.

“As a progressive destination, we want to assure that we can cater to more than two of those ships simultaneously in any given day.”

What about for experiences?

“We’re investing heavily in transforming the product into not only a day experience, but also potentially a night experience,” he continued.

“There’s been several requests and brands that showed interest in staying in a bit later at night…I think as a port it’s also important to invest in a nighttime experience, similar to Disney’s Epcot with the lighting around the facilities, the colors, and the team’s approach to the signage and other amenities.

“That is where we want to take it. Of course, maintaining the unique St. Maarten feel and look, but focusing on the finer details in terms of aesthetic experiences.”

Another priority is keeping things fresh for repeat visitors.

“As we all know, St. Maarten is one of the top ranked destinations in the cruise business, but also one of the most

frequently visited destinations. If we look at our repeat rates, it’s at times on average more than three times that the passengers have been to the destination. So, we are also looking at a marquee value and increasing on those experiences.”

He then shifted to a more distant future and staying ahead of the trend on sustainability.

“I think the cruise industry has been one of the leaders in that regard and looking at the sustainable objectives through 2050 – and as a port, we’ve also engaged and started now looking at our long-term planning, and how we can create a green and smart port.”

Connectivity serves as another pillar and links not only people, but also destination objectives. He pointed out that it’s essential to consider the dispersing of tours and people through everything from taxis and tour buses to ATVs and electric scooters – with any wheels necessary serving those six-ship days with more than 20,000 cruises passengers and 3,000 crew members on land simultaneously.

“And you can only imagine what that looks like from a logistics standpoint. So, one of the key things from the port’s perspective is looking at the discussions and dialogue with government, ensuring that our infrastructure is also updated as we increase volume loads, while looking at a better transit of people through the country, less time and traffic, which of course equates to more dollars potentially being able to be spent on the destination.”

With St. Maarten’s port facilities not only rivaling the top lists of the Caribbean, but going toe-to-toe with any competition in the world, how did they get to that point with experience and customer service?

“It all started with a plan back in 2007, with the leadership of government looking at the logistics around moving people. That was one of the most important things, being able to move people from the port facilities, and throughout the ‘Friendly Island’.”

Instead of investing heavily in shopping experiences in the port “that creates a cluster rather than getting people exploring throughout the island,” the strategy aligned with the current trend from guests to “immerse themselves into the destination.”

He reminded that deeper exploration is even more important considering the repeat visitor rates – and pointed to working with various institutes like Aquila’s Center for Cruise Excellence to always remain at the forefront of customer service.

“They’ve done a phenomenal job with not only looking at training our staff as a port, but also training the other operators such as tour operators and taxi drivers.”

After spending 15 years at the Port, what does he look for in terms of growth?

“…one of the top ranked destinations in the cruise business…”

“When I say growth, I mean more enhancements around the port facilities, creating more engaging opportunities within the port facility, but also opportunities for picturesque moments or some would say Instagrammable moments as we know social media is free advertising, and I think we have more to do in that regard in terms of capturing more hits online.”

After getting a preview of all the properties the Port owns while going around

the destination for the Conference, it was easy to see what Gumbs called a ‘holistic’ experience and approach.

“The philosophy from the Port has been and still is not only focusing on investments within the facility, but for us it’s also very important what’s happening in our backyard. We do recognize that the demand as a destination is not based on passengers wanting to come to see our cruise piers and see the small shopping amenities in the port, but they’re really coming for the destination and all the experiences that the ‘Friendly Island’ has to offer.

“And as a maritime company, for us it’s imperative to be able to help navigate and steer where investments are placed, looking at a holistic tourist experience on island…there are strategic products that we’re going to invest in which will enhance overall the holistic experience of St. Maarten as a tourist destination.”

A current example of that includes a food truck village complete with playground, and he reminded that the Port invested in the Walter Plantz Square 10 years ago.

“For us, it’s not only looking at the hard infrastructure, but also the experiences that these key investments will bring forward in the coming years.

“I can’t say too much because some still needs to be a secret to be unveiled in the coming year, but FCCA will be a close partner, as we’ll be discussing with and launching these key plans as we roll them out in the next 18 to 24 months.”

Not only does the Port impact the lives and livelihoods of so many (more

later about the $237.8 million and 5,213 jobs generated by cruise tourism in St. Maarten), but it is also owned and operated by the people.

“From the port standpoint, we are a state-owned enterprise, but we are privately managed and as such we pride ourselves with having great local professionals in the field, leaders of the fields and their departments, and being able to run and operate and manage a port.

“We’ve done this for 60 years, and from my perspective, this is the best recipe in terms of local leadership in terms of being able to truly connect with the local stakeholders as well and being able to wear the cap of corporate social responsibility because we are a state-owned enterprise, and a portion of that is also being able to recognize your corporate social responsibility to the communities in various seasons of the year.”

That is also seen in its charitable efforts, with the Port working with numerous organizations, including one focused on helping with GED programs, school lunch programs, and other ways to assist in vulnerable areas.

The relaunched and refocused FCCA Foundation even got in on the game before the Conference, providing aid to students at Sister Borgia Elementary School – part of the Foundation’s efforts in support of educating talented students across the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America.

So, why did St. Maarten host the Conference, anyway?

“First and foremost, we are celebrating our 60-year anniversary, and it was important for us to collaborate with FCCA as this was the 30 th annual conference, and celebrating and doing something amazing together could create something for the attendees to remember for years to come.

“Also, it was very important for us to showcase the developments and changes in the destination post Hurricane Irma,” he continued and pointed out that there were many new faces in the cruise industry that we needed to get acquainted with.

“…how we can create a green and smart port.”

“There was a huge group of executives on the list that I never met and I’m sure probably haven’t been to St. Maarten in a long time. So, for us it was also important looking at coming out of the pandemic and the changes within the cruise brands, new executives coming into the field for them to have a feel, a taste and aura of St. Maarten as a destination, as they entrust us to cater to thousands of their passengers annually.”

Of course, he pointed out it was also important to “take that feedback from the Conference and look ahead from a strategic perspective at further refining our product, experiences, and training and upskilling of all our people.”

The extra economic activity from the 800 people also didn’t hurt, so it wasn’t a huge surprise that he mentioned they would be willing to throw their hat back in the ring to host another FCCA Conference – and teased a dual-purpose building that can serve as a convention center and

homeporting facility, which the government is considering.

“We see [hosting the FCCA Conference] as a strategic investment, an investment into our people, an investment into the community into the country as a brand. I think those countries who may want to in the future should not look at it as a cost, but truly should look at it as an investment into their countries long-term future with the cruise industry.”

Why is St. Maarten so focused on cruise tourism – how important is it to the destination? What kind of convincing argument would he make from a St. Maarten perspective to anyone who questions the socioeconomic impact of cruise tourism in a destination…besides the recent report showing that cruise tourism generated $4.27 billion in direct cruise tourism expenditures—about 27 percent higher than the record set by the previous study in 2018— along with over 94,000 jobs paying more than $1.27 billion in wage income in the 33 participating destinations?

“I would say on a non-cruise ship day, take a drive or a walk to the top three hotspots on the island and then visit us with several ships in port – and I think you’ll have the answer looking right at you.

“I think this is applicable to many other destinations, with smaller Caribbean destinations having more than 95% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) derived from tourism one way or the other. So, for us, we take this business very seriously. We wholeheartedly appreciate the arrival of the cruise guests to the destination and the impact that it makes.”

Does he believe that every dollar that comes in through a cruise passenger organically – with $179.77 million in passenger expenditures during the 2023/2024 cruise year – touches every citizen in St. Maarten at some point?

“Those dollars have to be touching someone every time a cruise ship pulls into port at some point throughout the island, whether it’s immediately that day or maybe within a month later, that dollar is going throughout the ‘Friendly Island.’”

The cruise industry was anchored in St. Maarten, with 670 destination stakeholders and nearly 100 cruise line executives gathering for the only official cruise conference and trade show taking place in and representing the Caribbean and Latin America: the 30th Annual Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Cruise Conference & Trade Show.

“I want to applaud everyone throughout stunning St. Maarten, ‘the Friendly Island,’ for coordinating this successful event while showcasing the destination’s friendliness and hospitality, along with displaying their commitment and ability to grow cruise tourism,” said Michele Paige, FCCA CEO. “It was also humbling to see the cruise executives’ historic belief in our mission to link stakeholders and cruise lines to develop mutual benefits, proven by the event’s record number of one-on-one meetings.”

Taking place October 22-25, the event featured its secret recipe of workshops, meetings, and networking functions for the attendees and high-level executives from FCCA Member Lines.

The Conference’s new recipe focusing on its main ingredient – one-on-one meetings – was further perfected, with over 940 pre-

set 15-minute sessions scheduled between attendees and cruise executives: a 34 percent increase over the previous record of 700 meetings set last year.

How to further enhance benefits for the destinations – and entire regions –was front and center at the ‘President/ CEO & Ministers Roundtable’ featuring high-ranking government officials and a cruise executive panel that included Christopher Ivy, CEO, Margaritaville at Sea; Richard Sasso, Chairman, MSC Cruises USA; Harry Sommer, President & CEO, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.; John Padgett, President, Princess Cruises; and Michael Bayley, President & CEO, Royal Caribbean International The meeting focused on mutual benefits, such as purchasing and sourcing opportunities, in addition to overall cruise tourism topics that were open to input by the government officials.

Those executives participated in numerous other functions during the event, including the event’s first ‘Presidents Dinner’ – where they and other high-level executives hosted tables for dinner with a side of networking and business development with destination stakeholders – and the event’s keynote workshop, the ‘Presidential Panel,’ where they covered everything from current opportunities – including more homeporting, longer stays, increased capacity, summer cruising, multi-port calls, and local employment and sourcing – to long-term goals, such as achieving net-zero carbon emissions, focusing on partnership and planning for a brighter future.

Sasso also delivered the opening ceremony’s ‘State of the Industry Address,’ where he detailed cruising’s growing demand; the importance of partnerships and roles that associations like FCCA play in developing and sustaining those partnerships; and St. Maarten’s symbiotic relationship with the cruise industry and prominent role in cruise tourism.

“It is exciting to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this event, and I believe I have been to most of them during my nearly 50 years of partnership as an FCCA Member Line Executive,” said Sasso. “While witnessing many changes to the industry

throughout the years, one constant is the importance of communication and understanding, and FCCA continues to remain at the forefront of offering opportunities for this vital mutual exchange.”

Workshops

The entire audience of stakeholders and executives was invited to the event’s schedule of educational workshops, with many fully booked weeks before the event as the excitement grew to maximize the opportunities of the robust and interactive schedule.

‘Presidential Panel’ gathered senior leaders from the world’s leading cruise lines to discuss strategic developments, environmental initiatives, and the importance of collaboration with Caribbean destinations.

Moderated by Alexander Gumbs, CEO of Port St. Maarten, an FCCA Presidential Strategic Partner, the panel included leading industry executives: Michael Bayley, President & CEO, Royal Caribbean International; Christopher Ivy,

CEO, Margaritaville at Sea; John Padgett, President, Princess Cruises; Richard Sasso, Chairman, MSC Cruises USA; and Harry Sommer, President & CEO, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

The panel focused on expanding sustainable practices within the cruise industry, enriching the guest experience, and strengthening partnerships with local Caribbean communities. Each executive shared their company’s latest initiatives and commitment to positive growth in the region, recognizing the Caribbean as both an essential partner and premier destination.

Michael Bayley highlighted Royal Caribbean’s development of immersive experiences like its “Perfect Day” destinations, which have become key attractions that blend natural beauty with a curated experience. “There’s just so much opportunity in front of us. In alignment with FCCA’s focus on sustainable tourism, Richard Sasso discussed MSC Cruises’ dedication to reducing environmental impact, including initiatives to develop hybrid coral at the Ocean Cay Marine Reserve. He emphasized that sustainability is a “serious investment” and “[educating] the next generations to follow the same passion to help our environment become better” is paramount.

Class technology, designed to enhance passenger convenience and reduce crowding through personalized service – critical for providing seamless travel experiences in popular Caribbean destinations. “The most important thing about the Princess Medallion is it’s not about technology. It’s about the guest,” Padgett remarked.

Christopher Ivy from Margaritaville at Sea shared his brand’s strategy of fostering more extended stays and culturally integrated experiences, showcasing how cruise lines are evolving to support and promote local economies. He shared “we just launched last week a program with our partner resort in Nassau where we take guests directly to that resort. We really lean more heavily on the destination.”

Harry Sommer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings discussed the growing demand for Caribbean sailings, emphasizing the importance of partnerships with Caribbean governments and local businesses to meet the region’s year-round tourism potential. “Thirty-seven million people are scheduled to cruise this year.

That’s going to be 50 million in 10 years from now, and the majority of that increase is going to be here in the Caribbean basin. So this hopefully gives you confidence to invest and build,” Sommer noted, encouraging continued investment in facilities to support this anticipated influx.

Panelists agreed on the importance of aligning growth and sustainability. Gumbs closed the session by urging Caribbean leaders to capitalize on these emerging opportunities. “Collaboration with the destinations and the industry is ever so more important as we move ahead, looking at how best we can collectively go towards being green,” he asserted.

‘The Total Guest Experience’ showed how enhancing the destination experience can drive increase spending – exploring how destinations and partners can upgrade their products and adapt to the evolving dynamics of cruise travel. After making a historic return at its new annual marquee event at Seatrade Cruise Global, with 13 presidents and above from FCCA Member Lines hosting tables with a side of business and networking, the FCCA Foundation has continued full steam ahead.

Before the 30th Annual FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show tipped off in St. Maarten, Javonte Anyabwele, Vice President of Global Strategic Sourcing at Carnival Corporation, Karin Plettner, Carnival’s VP of Global Ports & Destinations Strategy, and Carlos Estrada, Director of Commercial Home Port Operations at Carnival, took a timeout to shoot some hoops with the students at Sister Borgia Elementary School – one of the schools that benefited from a donation by the relaunched and refocused charitable arm in support of educating talented students across the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America.

On October 31, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and Ian Gooding-Edghill, Minister of Tourism and International Transport, traveled to FCCA’s office to receive the inaugural FCCA Owen Arthur Scholarship Fund contribution.

Launched by the FCCA Foundation in memory of the late Prime Minister of Barbados, Owen Arthur, this annual scholarship will fuel educational growth across the Caribbean for years to come – with students from at least five schools set to benefit and foster new opportunities for future generations.

“I am honored that the Foundation can continue the legacy of The Right Honourable Professor Owen Seymour Arthur, former Prime Minister of Barbados, who truly inspired my career and empowered so many throughout the Caribbean, as well as making it possible to have the current partnership between the cruise industry and the Caribbean,” said Paige. “Hopefully this scholarship can live up to his memory my providing a platform for future generations in the region.”

The Foundation’s annual essay competition also made its return, and FCCA Presidential Partner U.S. Virgin Islands recorded remarkable achievements with St. Thomas students Rachel Guzman Ramirez and Tyler Ian Antonio Chung capturing top results in the 2024 FCCA Foundation Essay Contest.

The FCCA team met with USVI government officials, including Governor Albert Bryan Jr. and Commissioner of Tourism Joseph Boschulte, to celebrate this important milestone and discuss ongoing collaboration to support youth development and sustainable tourism in the region – and the Department of Tourism in collaboration with the Department of Education and Lockhart Elementary leadership also hosted an awards ceremony in the U.S. Virgin Islands to celebrate the prodigious accomplishment.

“It is with great pride that we celebrate the educational excellence and prowess of our local youth, and the continued partnership from throughout the tourism industry that presents unique and indelible opportunities for the entire U.S. Virgin Islands,” shared Commissioner Joseph Boschulte.

Through essays on sustainable cruise tourism, Rachel and Tyler demonstrated the power of young minds in shaping the future of the Caribbean. Events like this underscore the profound impact of collaboration between the tourism industry and local communities.

Additionally, ‘tis the season for another annual project currently underway, the Holiday Gift Project, which has brought presents and cheer to hundreds of thousands of underprivileged children – such as those living in orphanages and institutions, as well as low-income families – during its previous 23 editions. This year is poised to give gifts and festivities to close to 5,000 children in 23 destinations, some of which will be featured in the following pages.

All of this was made possible by Diamonds International jumpstarting the return of the FCCA Foundation through a new collaborative partnership. As part of the partnership, both entities are combining their resources, especially on the focus of direct contact with local communities to determine needs and ways to help that can generate long-term benefits.

Cruise Industry Drives Record Economic Impact in 2023

The cruise industry is riding a wave of historic achievements. According to Cruise Lines International Association’s (CLIA) 2023 Global Economic Impact Study, cruise tourism contributed $168.6 billion to the global economy, a highest-ever figure, representing a 9% increase from 2019, the previous benchmark year for the industry.

Significant job creation came alongside the historic economic impact figures. The cruise industry supported 1.6 million jobs worldwide in 2023, representing 37% growth since 2019. 77% of these jobs were land-based. $56.9 billion in wages were contributed by the industry, surpassing 2019 wages by 13%. Cruise also contributes $85.6 billion to global GDP, with its growth out-

pacing that of the global economy.

The record-breaking figures were revealed at the annual CLIA Cruise Forward Summit in Miami, in November.

Cruise passenger numbers also surged, with 31.7 million travelers setting sail in 2023, a 7% increase from 2019. This steady rise in demand reflects the growing popularity of cruise vacations worldwide.

“The cruise industry is an increasingly important contributor to the global economy, generating billions of dollars in economic output and supporting millions of jobs,” said Kelly Craighead, president and CEO of CLIA. “As demand for cruising continues to grow, our member cruise lines are committed to preserving the integrity, cultural heritage and beauty of treasured

destinations so they can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.”

Cruise tourism also drives significant benefits across various other industries. From transportation and lodging to agriculture, food, and technology, the impact is widespread. Ports, local businesses, and communities all thrive from the presence of cruise passengers, who contribute to the economic vitality to destinations during their cruise vacations, and after. CLIA data shows that 60% of cruise passengers return to destinations first visited on a cruise for longer stays, further boosting local economies.

Guiding Principles: Steering a Sustainable Course for Tourism

The cruise industry strives to be a leader in innovation and responsible tourism, with destination stewardship as a key component. In November, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) launched its Guiding Principles for Responsible Tourism. The publication identifies the Sustainable Development Goals to which the industry is contributing and offers a framework for ongoing cooperation and joint activities between the cruise sector, ports, and destinations.

Rooted in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the principles showcase the cruise sector’s commitment to sustainability. The publication highlights key initiatives by CLIA member lines, from advanced waste treatment systems aboard ships to partnerships that safeguard marine ecosystems and celebrate local traditions. These efforts demonstrate how cruise tourism can bring economic

benefits to destinations while preserving cultural and environmental integrity.

Central to the framework is collaboration. The principles promote cooperation among cruise lines, ports, and communities to ensure a sustainable future for the industry and the destinations they visit. This focus

on partnership reflects a shared responsibility: Protecting cherished destinations while fostering vibrant, thriving communities.

Disney’s New Ship Comes to Life

Disney Cruise Line welcomed its new ship, Disney Treasure, during a spectacular waterfront christening celebration the evening of November 19 on the Hudson River in New York City. In a stunning display of storytelling like only Disney can do, the night sky above Disney Treasure sparkled and danced with a larger-than-life light show depicting the stars and icons of beloved Disney adventures represented on board the new ship, including “Aladdin,” “Haunted Mansion,” “Moana” and “Coco.”

The dazzling tribute to the stories and characters was brought to life by a synchronized showcase of 1,000 drones set to a stirring medley of inspiring Disney songs. Award-winning singer-songwriter Jordin Sparks lent her own star power to the celebration with a powerful live rendition of “Live the Adventure,” the original anthem of the Disney Treasure.

“For more than 100 years, Disney stories have filled the world with joy and wonder, capturing the hearts and imaginations of generations across every continent. And since the launch of the Disney Cruise Line in 1998, our ships have become brand ambassadors that bring our world-class storytelling and the immersive nature of our theme parks to new audiences in new places all over the world,” said Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, to kick off the celebration.

The Disney Treasure, sister ship to the Disney Wish (launched in 2022) and the Disney Destiny (setting sail in Nov. 2025), calls upon the bold and heartwarming stories of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney Parks attractions to offer new and guest-favorite experiences steeped in the theme of adventure. These include an original Broadway-style retelling of “Moana;” immersive dining experiences inspired by Pixar’s “Coco” and Marvel Super Heroes; a splashtacular Mickey Mouse-themed water attraction; signature fireworks at sea; imaginative clubs for kids of all ages; and an all-new collection of Disney Parks-inspired lounges for adults, including the first-ever inspired by the Haunted Mansion.

Countdown to MSC World America

The countdown is on for the launch of MSC Cruises’ new flagship, MSC World America, which represents an important evolution for MSC Cruises’ successful World Class prototype – ushering in a new world of cruising with re-imagined venues and concepts to deliver the ultimate guest experience in the Caribbean, offering MSC Cruises’ signature elegant European design with North American comfort appealing to travelers who are seeking global adventures.

The new flagship will also be the first to feature seven on board districts, each having its own atmosphere, facilities and experiences, designed to enhance the onboard experience, allowing every guest to create a one-of-a-kind holiday that is uniquely theirs and maximize their time on board.

MSC World America is under construction at Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. She will be named in a glittering ceremony in Miami on April 9, 2025.

New Details on Norwegian’s

Norwegian Cruise Line has no shortage of newbuilds in tow, and they recently released details about the new onboard experiences and expanded venues that will be available aboard sister ships Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna, the first two vessels in the cutting-edge Prima Plus Class set to launch in April 2025 and 2026, respectively.

The soon-to-debut ships will feature the Company’s first-ever Aqua and Luna Game Zone, an all-new gaming experience and evolution of NCL’s popular Galaxy Pavilion and arcade venues. The sister vessels will boast even more expanded and redesigned spaces, including Bull’s Eye Bar, a now complimentary experience with interactive dart games and a new full-service bar; and Tee Time, a supercharged version of mini golf where guests can play 12 interactive holes across two decks.

Newbuilds

The Mandara Spa and Salon and Pulse Fitness Center will also be refreshed to include sophisticated design updates, and new revitalizing service additions including a clay sauna, IV drip therapy and thalassotherapy loungers aboard Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna.

Following the ship’s Caribbean season, it will offer five and seven-day voyages to Bermuda from New York City from August 2025 through October 2025 and then cruise five and seven-day Eastern Caribbean itineraries from Miami, the “Cruise Capital of the World,” beginning October 2025 through April 2026.

On April 4, 2026, Norwegian Luna will kick off its inaugural Caribbean season from Miami. The ship will then sail seven-day cruises with calls to the beautiful Eastern Caribbean.

Star of the Seas Floating on Cloud Nine – and the Water Floating on air, Royal Caribbean International and thousands of workers celebrated the new Star of the Seas floating one step closer to its highly anticipated debut. The next combination of the best of every vacation reached a major construction milestone as it floated for the first

time, a moment marked less than one year ahead of its mic-drop introduction at Port Canaveral in August 2025.

To kick off the milestone, a ceremony—a maritime tradition, complete with a shot from a cannon—took place in the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, to celebrate the 19 months (and counting) of hard work put in by the thousands behind Star’s construction. Then, the proverbial floodgates opened to fill the dry dock with 92 million gallons of water – an overnight process that took nearly nine hours. Star was then floated out of the dock and into the outfitting pier, where it will continue to take shape inside and out.

Royal Caribbean will double the world’s best vacation count with Star, bringing new twists and acclaimed experiences introduced by Icon of the Seas to the greater Orlando area. Across eight neighborhoods that are destinations in themselves, there are ways for every type of family and vacationer to make memories, from thrills like six of the fastest and tallest waterslides to 40-plus ways to dine and drink and the Surfside neighborhood designed for young families. And it’s all combined with seven nights of island hopping to idyllic destinations like the cruise line’s Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas.

First Look at Upgraded Star Princess

Princess Cruises unveiled exciting, new features for Star Princess, the second Sphere Class ship set to debut in fall 2025. A stunning replica of the sensational Sun Princess now sailing in the Caribbean from Ft Lauderdale, Star Princess will offer several unique enhancements, including non-smoking casino areas, as well as expanded dining venues, and leisure experiences, making her a standout addition to the fleet.

The 4,300-guest, 178,000-ton Star Princess is the second Sphere-Class ship in the Princess fleet and will also be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), reflecting the brand’s commitment to sustainability. Echoing the sleek, sophisticated design of Sun

Princess, Star Princess will also boast cutting-edge features like The Dome, the first geodesic dome at sea, and The Sphere, a breathtaking glass-enclosed Piazza at the heart of the ship.

“After the overwhelming response to Sun Princess, we are excited to debut her sister ship, Star Princess, with added enhancements to elevate the guest experience,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president. “From expanded non-smoking casino areas to new spaces for relaxation and recreation, Star Princess will deliver an unforgettable vacation for all when she launches in fall 2025.”

Windstar Cruises’ Star Seeker Floats Out

Windstar Cruises’ new Star Seeker yacht, the first Star Class new build for the line, has floated out of the building dock, touching water for the first time at the WestSEA Shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. While construction of Star Seeker’s exterior is

complete, work will be ongoing to complete the interiors, including 112 spacious suites.

The ship will also boast five dining options, a full-service spa with a grand entrance from the deck above, a fitness facility, and a fresh take on the line’s iconic Watersports Platform, which turns the ocean into an infinity pool by providing guests access to the sea directly from the ship.

With a capacity for 224 guests and a staff to guest ratio of 1:2, Star Seeker will maintain the intimate atmosphere for which Windstar is renowned, ensuring personalized service at every turn.

Star Seeker will enter service in December of 2025, sailing from Málaga, Spain to Miami, Florida, where Windstar is headquartered and where the ship’s christening ceremony will take place in January of 2026. Star Seeker will then sail its first voyage in the Caribbean and offer more cruises in the region before heading up the west coast of the United States to Alaska for a full season of summer cruises. From there, the ship will sail to Asia, bringing back the line’s popular Around Japan itineraries.

Windstar will debut an additional new sister ship, Star Explorer, in December of 2026. Star Seeker and Star Explorer both have ice-strengthened hulls, unlocking access to new destinations. The ships are equipped with the latest technology in safety, propulsion, and navigation, including pump jet thrusters and forward-facing Sonar.

To minimize their environmental footprint and uphold the brand’s commitment to sustainability, the ships have tier III Nox rated Rolls Royce engines and can connect to shore power minimizing port emissions. In addition, the ships have advanced wastewater treatment systems that meet all global standards. Every aspect of their design reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to preserving the environment while providing unforgettable experiences to travelers.

Steel Cutting for Seven Seas Prestige

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has commenced construction on, Seven Seas Prestige, the ship that transcends luxury, with the vessel’s steel cutting ceremony taking place Monday, October 21 at the FincantieriMarghera shipyard in Venice, Italy.

Oceania Cruises’ Allura to Debut the Crêperie

Oceania Cruises has unveiled details of its new culinary venue, the Crêperie, debuting on Allura, its newest ship launching in July 2025. The Crêperie, located next to Baristas, the line’s signature coffee bar, will offer a selection of tempting French crêpes, Bruxelles waffles and bubble waffles, alongside Italian ice cream sundaes, from mid-morning throughout the afternoon.

Transformative Makeover for Queen Elizabeth

Cunard is ushering in an era-defining refurbishment of Queen Elizabeth, paving the way for her highly anticipated inaugural Caribbean program sailing from Miami and her debut Alaska season from Seattle in 2025.

The luxurious 2,000 guest ship will undergo a significant refit from February 25 to March 13, 2025, in Seatrium’s Admiralty Yard in Singapore, preparing her for a new Alaska season from Seattle in June and a dazzling debut voyage from Miami to the Caribbean on October 16. The Caribbean season will begin with a 12-night roundtrip sailing from Miami.

For the first time in Cunard’s history, one of their iconic fleet will spend the full season in Miami, and Queen Elizabeth will offer a dedicated program of roundtrip Caribbean voyages with itineraries ranging from nine to 28 nights.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) announced that Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Breakaway will each undergo significant updates to offer more onboard guest experiences, including a brand-new cinema and dining experience, Silver Screen Bistro; a new outdoor recreational concept, Horizon Park; as well as the extension of popular dining venues such as Cagney’s Steakhouse and Teppanyaki; and expanded accommodations including The Haven by Norwegian®.

Holland America Line Brings Regional Cuisine from Port to Stage

Holland America Line’s renowned culinary program takes the stage onboard with new, cooking shows that spotlight regional culinary specialties and locally sourced seafood from the cruise line’s Global Fresh Fish Program.

Co-hosted by each ship’s executive chef and cruise & travel director, the demonstrations are fleetwide and occur at least twice per seven-day sailings and more often on longer itineraries.

Guests can learn cooking techniques and the culinary history of the region from the executive chef, with the opportunity to taste the dishes in the Dining Room that evening. Guests also will be able to take a copy of the recipes home to make in the comfort of their own kitchen for friends and family.

Cruise Tourism Generates Record Economic Impact for the Caribbean and Latin America

The 2023-2024 cruise year brought record economic contributions to the Caribbean and Latin America. According to the study by Business Research & Economic Advisors (BREA), cruise tourism generated $4.27 billion in direct cruise tourism expenditures – about 27% higher than the record set by the previous study in 2018 – along with over 94,000 jobs paying more than $1.27 billion in wage income in the 33 participating destinations.

“We could not be prouder of these results and what they mean for the lives and livelihoods of so many throughout the Caribbean and Latin America,” said Michele Paige, CEO, FCCA. “In addition to showing what cruise tourism brings to these destinations’ economies, many of the study’s findings will also serve as the foundation of building further mutual success between cruise lines and destination stakeholders.”

The study measured direct spending impacts through passenger surveys and crew surveys; cruise line spending for services and provisions; port revenues; and employment generated by cruise ship calls. Measurement of economic impacts was calculated by collecting data from local government agencies, regional development agencies and international economic agencies to evaluate impacts on employment, wages, port fees and taxes. Key findings include:

• Cruise tourism generated $4.27 billion in expenditures, up 27% compared to the last study in 2018 and the previous record.

• 94,027 jobs were supported by the industry, up 19% compared to the last study, paying a total employee wage income of $1.27 billion.

• Destinations welcomed 29.4 million onshore visits from cruise passengers, with an average spend of $104.36, generating a total of $3.07 billion.

• Destinations also welcomed 3.9 million onshore visits from crew, with an average spend of $58.78, generating a total of $229.5 million.

• Cruise lines spent $968.3 million, an average of $29.3 million per destination.

• The 33.3 million passenger and crew visits represent a 13% increase compared to the previous study, and the 31 common destinations in the 2018 and 2024 studies experienced a 17% increase in passenger visits.

• Average per passenger spend increased for 26 of the 31 common destinations, and 14 destinations recorded average spend rates above $100 per passenger (up from 12 in 2018).

• On average, a single transit cruise call with 4,000 passengers and 1,640 crew generates $369,100 in passenger and crew spending alone: $339,800 and $29,300, respectively.

The study’s measure of cruise tourism expenditures did not include indirect benefits of cruise tourism, including supplies purchased by tour operators, restaurants and port authorities, though the estimates of these expenditures served as the basis for total employment and wage impacts. The study also did not account for other indirect benefits, such as spending from cruise passengers who return as stay-over guests; nor did the study measure other methods of cruise line spending that benefit destinations, including NGO partnerships and marketing.

The study – which is engaged by the FCCA in partnership with its destination partners as one of many ways to foster the understanding of cruise tourism, its benefits and how to best actualize its potential – was released at the 30th annual FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show in St. Maarten,

further adding to the event’s focus on maximizing mutual success for all throughout cruise tourism through a series of meetings, workshops and networking opportunities between destination stakeholders and cruise executives to offer insight and develop business and relationships.

The British Virgin Islands Continuing to Redefine Paradise

The British Virgin Islands (BVI), an FCCA Presidential Partner, continues to make waves since signing the landmark agreement. From inaugurals and hotel openings to Olympian tour guides, showcasing natural flavors, and featuring strong representation at the FCCA Cruise Conference and Trade Show, the quarter had plenty to feature – and ample reasons why the destination is ‘Paradise Redefined.’

The British Virgin Islands was strongly represented at the 30th Annual FCCA Cruise Conference & Tradeshow, with a delegation led by Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Kye Rymer, who emphasized the importance of cruise tourism to the Virgin Islands’ economy: “Cruise tourism generates significant revenue, supports local employment, and fuels various businesses across the territory.”

Inaugural Calls Galore

That was on top of the British Virgin Islands welcoming two inaugural calls the previous week. On Tuesday, November 19, Virgin Gorda welcomed the inaugural call of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s Ilma and her 273 passengers and 382 crew members. To commemorate this occasion, a plaque exchange ceremony was held to commemorate the vessel’s inaugural call to the Territory. Then on Wednesday, MSC Virtuosa – and her 2,633 guests and 1,160 crew members – was welcomed for the first time at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park and held a plaque exchange ceremony.

He noted that the BVI delegation, which included representatives from the Ministry of Communications and Works, the BVI Ports Authority, Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park, the BVI Tourist Board,

Disney Treasure, Disney Cruise Line’s newest and most innovative ship, and her 2,978 passengers and 1,713 crew visited Tortola on Wednesday, November 27. The inaugural call was marked by a plaque exchange ceremony onboard the ship with Captain Marco Nagara, Minister of Communication & Works Honourable Kye Rymer, BVI Ports Authority officials, BVI Government representatives, Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) representatives and Disney’s local agent commemorated the inaugural. The ceremony underscored the strong partnership between Disney Cruise Line and the BVI, a marquee destination on Treasure’s Caribbean itineraries.

New & Renewed Resorts

The British Virgin Islands’ largest private island resort, Peter Island Resort, is back with a new focus. Once catering around the marina, the new 52 luxurious rooms are set on a backdrop with more than just a picturesque beach – but also one with a swashbuckling history. Centuries ago, members of Blackbeard’s crew tried to cross from Dead Chest Island, falling to the sea and getting this beach the name of “Deadman’s.” Each of the rooms is just steps from the sand, and the resort also features a 10,000-squarefoot spa, with seven treatment rooms and a jacuzzi right on the ocean’s edge; a pair of eateries, a yacht club, the signature marina, and a 3,000-square-foot event space and conference center.

Additionally, Virgin Gorda’s Oil Nut Bay – one of the Caribbean’s most exclusive residential resorts – is poised to check in something in addition to their upscale guests. Its new overwater Sundara Spa + Studio is set for a premiere, with an opening planned for January 2025. It is not specified when, but legend has it Los Tres Reyes (the three kings) arrive on their camels sometime after the children fall asleep and leave presents for the well-behaved kids. Being a tropical paradise with no camels in sight, the Magi travel on horses. As the wise men leave the presents by the shoebox, the humble carriage snacks on the grass the children kindly laid out for them before magically moving on to the next house. As soon as the rooster sings in the early morn-

ing, families across Puerto Rico wake to find presents for them.

FCCA Holiday Gift Project Returns to The Cayman Islands

On Wednesday, December 4, Florida

Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), in collaboration with the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism (CIDOT), and the Ministry of Tourism and Ports (MOTP) celebrated the successful return of the Holiday Gift Project to the Cayman Islands for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The FCCA’s Holiday Gift Project is a long-standing tradition of giving back to the communities of the Caribbean, Florida and Latin America. The return of the initiative this year marks the renewal of its commitment to supporting the growth and development of the region’s youth.

Held at Hotel Indigo, this year’s event brought festive joy and a focus on literacy to 180 students from Marie Martin Primary School and 20 young learners from East End Early Years, along with their teachers and parents. This year’s theme placed a strong emphasis on litera-

cy, with activities organized in partnership with the non-profit organization Literacy Is For Everyone (LIFE).

The highlight of the event was the gift-giving by Santa and the Carnival Horizon crew, who shared holiday cheer and smiles with the students.

“Reading is the key to unlocking endless opportunities,” remarked Deputy Premier Bryan. “Today, we are not just giving gifts; we are nurturing bright futures, encouraging dreams, and building a culture of learning and exploration among our youth.”

The event concluded with shared laughter, joy, and holiday spirit as students received gifts, participated in engaging activities, and celebrated the power of education and community.

“It was truly heart-warming to welcome the FCCA back to the Cayman Islands for the return of the Holiday Gift Project. This cherished tradition high-

St. Maarten Schools Receive Donation from FCCA Foundation

Nowadays, quality of education cannot be delivered without having up-to-date educational technology, which, however, is also quite costly.

SVOBE Schools, Milton Peters School (MPC) and Sundial School, were therefore very grateful that the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT) and Port St. Maarten Group (PSG) invited SVOBE Schools to be a recipient of this year’s FCCA Foundation donation.

With a donation to the total tune of $10,000, SVOBE can purchase five Prowise smartboards, which will replace beamers that have reached their “stretched” life spans. These Smartboards enable teachers and students to learn collaboratively, to share files, access online resources and use educational software and an extensive source of educational materials.

Dominican Republic Has It All

From new records and products to initiatives attracting more tourism, and even entire new port developments, Dominican Republic continues to show it has it all.

Dominican Republic Exceeds 10 Million Visitors

The Dominican Republic has exceeded 10 million visitors this year, with over 10,005,800 arrivals as of Monday, December 2. The government aims to surpass 11 million visitors by year-end, highlighting tourism’s crucial role in economic growth and job creation. (The tourism sector currently employs over 720,000 people and accounts for 18% of national employment.)

In November alone, the country welcomed 881,499 visitors, a 54% increase from November 2019. Of these, 667,450 arrived by air, marking a 44% rise from last year, while 214,454 cruise passengers represented a 93% jump from 2019.

Cabo Rojo & Cruisers Celebrate Second Phase Opening

In a landmark event, the Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader, alongside Tourism Minister David Collado, inaugurated the second phase of Port

Cabo Rojo, solidifying the southern region’s place as a burgeoning hub for cruise tourism. This expansion marks a significant milestone in the ongoing development of Pedernales, a region that has seen a transformative boost through strategic tourism investments under Abinader’s administration. The event, held on Wednesday, October 16, welcomed the arrival of the third cruise ship to dock at the newly expanded port –Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas –bringing 3,114 passengers and 1,185 crew members while highlighting Cabo Rojo’s potential to accommodate large-scale tourism, with the expanded port now capable of handling two Oasis-class ships and up to 15,000 passengers at a time.

Port Cabo Rojo wasted no time in impressing cruisers. Guests on Adventure of the Seas were singing the praises. “This port looks like a hotel, it’s the best of all the ones we’ve visited,” said a guest from South Carolina who continued that they “have to return when all the offers for this destination are finished.” Another guest from Puerto Rico described the experience as “spectacular,” highlighting that they are ready to return anytime.

Dominican Republic Debuts Immersive Tourism Dome in New York City

The Dominican Republic officially kicked off a week-long celebration of the country’s vibrant culture and tourism with the opening of an Immersive Dome in Times Square on Sunday, December 8. The grand opening event drew a crowd of about 500 and featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Minister of Tourism David Collado, alongside local officials and special guests, which celebrated the deep cultural ties between the Dominican Republic and New York City. Highlights of the event included special food tastings, colorful costumes, and traditional musical and dance performances.

“With this activation, we want everyone in Times Square to feel the joy, authenticity, and cultural richness of the Dominican Republic. This is more than just a tourism initiative; it is a celebration of the strong ties between our countries and an invitation to discover the beauty and warmth of our home,” said Minister Collado.

Jamaica’s Historic Start for Cruise Tourism

After closing the last season with a momentous 1.1 million cruise passengers – contributing more than US$200 million to the local economy – Jamaica celebrated a historic start to the 2024/2025 cruise tourism season. From December 2-5, 10 ships docked at the three primary resort ports, bringing approximately 34,519 passengers and a total crew of 13,137. It also ushered in history for the Port of Falmouth on Thursday, December 5 when Disney Treasure, made its inaugural call concurrently with Celebrity Ascent’s inaugural visit.

“The cruise winter season has literally started this week and it has started with a bang,” said Minister of Tourism Hon. Edmund Bartlett. “Today we have the historic double inauguration of two ships in a single port here in Falmouth.”

This should come as no surprise, as Jamaica is ready to take on an added role in the cruise industry, according to Minister Bartlett. He says Jamaica stands ready to take on the role of a key supply logistics hub for the Caribbean cruise industry, creating a huge and transformative opportunity for local producers. Bartlett added that several major cruise lines, including Carnival and Royal Caribbean, have expressed an eagerness to source more of their onboard product needs from the island, marking a significant development for Jamaica’s economy.

“This is excellent news for our country, our farmers, manufacturers, artisans, and other small and medium-sized enterprises. It opens a vast new market for our local products, potentially transforming our economic landscape…a real gamechanger,” he said.

And Minister Bartlett knows a thing or two. In fact, he was recognized with two more prestigious awards during the quarter: the Gusi Peace Prize and the Order of Jamaica. He received the Gusi Peace Prize

in Manila – often dubbed as Asia’s equivalent of the Nobel Peace Prize, celebrates excellence in various fields, including peace, human rights, politics, science, and the arts – in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the global tourism industry. The distinguished accolade.

The longest-serving minister of tourism in the world was also recognized in Jamaica by his home country on National Heroes Day with the Order of Jamaica – a public holiday each year to honor those great Jamaicans who, by their work and often ultimate sacrifice, revolted against slavery, secured our freedom, fought for equal rights and justice, guided our Independence, resisted oppression, and, in so doing, inspired a revolution and an awakening of self-pride.

Addressing a gathering to commemorate the inaugural flight of LIAT 2020, James noted that stayover arrivals have increased by 30% —adding that with the move to carry the room stock to 1,200, an increase in the services of LIAT and major international airlines choosing to come to St Vincent and the Grenadines, there is expected to be growth in the tourism sector.

MSC Virtuosa Returns to St. Vincent

MSC Virtuosa returned to Port Kingstown on Monday, December 9 for its second call following its maiden visit to St Vincent and the Grenadines on November 27. The arrival was again special because it brought more than 6,000 visitors, with most disembarking and enjoying various scheduled tours and local excursions. The arrivals also gave a huge boost to business for the local vendors including cab drivers, tour guides and others offering various goods and service

First Restaurant Week

The exciting culinary journey in St Vincent and the Grenadines kicked off on November 17 with the highly anticipated first-ever Restaurant Week 2024. As part of the Exosphere activation, the public could scan a QR code to access a website that highlights Colombia’s unique offerings and unlocks limited-time travel promotions. Carnival Sources Business with Jamaica

Carnival Corporation & plc, in collaboration with Jamaica’s Tourism Enhancement Fund, successfully hosted a sourcing readiness forum from Sept. 23-24. The forum gathered a wide array of local suppliers, carefully selected by the Tourism Linkages Network of the Tourism Enhancement Fund. Participants ranged from small businesses and farmers to large-scale consolidators and distributors. These suppliers showcased a diverse selection of products appealing to Carnival Corporation, including frozen foods, agricultural goods, and authentic Jamaican culinary offerings such as sauces, seasonings, rums, chocolates, teas, and coffee. Additionally, artisanal items like handcrafted woodwork, jewelry, and candles were presented.

Port of Los Angeles’ ZeroEmission Transformation

The Port of Los Angeles has been awarded an unprecedented $412 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Clean Ports Program to support the zero-emission (ZE) transition at the nation’s

busiest trade gateway. The Port and its private sector partners will match the EPA grant with an additional $236 million, bringing the total new investment in ZE programs at the Port of Los Angeles to $644 million.

“Thank you, EPA Administrator Michael Regan, for your support of our vision of a zero-emission future,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. “With this funding, the nation’s busiest port will be able to continue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality. Together, in partnership with the federal government, industry, labor, and environmental justice groups, we are building a greener and healthier Los Angeles. L.A. will continue to lead on innovative infrastructure and sustainability.”

The new funding will go toward purchasing nearly 425 pieces of battery electric, human-operated ZE cargo-handling equipment, installing 300 new ZE charging ports and other related infrastructure, and deploying 250 ZE drayage trucks. The grant will also provide for $50 million for a community led ZE grant program, workforce development, and related engagement activities.

In support of its goal to achieve 100% ZE terminal operations by 2030, the Port, with assistance from the ILWU, and several of its private sector tenant-partners submitted the EPA grant application this past May. The Port partnered with Yusen Terminals LLC, Everport Terminal Services, TraPac, Fenix Marine Services, APM Terminals and the Harbor Community Benefit Foundation on the successful application. The application was supported by a coalition of over 100 elected officials, public agencies, business groups, environmental justice, community and labor organizations.

Zero-emission initiatives supported by the EPA grant and matching funds are expected to significantly reduce emissions from Port operations, decreasing annual emissions of NOx by 55 tons, PM2.5 by 1.5 tons and greenhouse gasses by 41,500 tons, and eliminating 3.5 million gallons of annual diesel fuel usage.

The grant will set a new standard for environmental stewardship in the maritime industry by directly funding an innovative, community-led $50 million ZE grant program in partnership with the Harbor Community Benefit Foundation, prioritizing investments that benefit frontline, disadvantaged areas. Investments will

be identified through a community-led outreach and selection process that prioritizes projects having the greatest emission reductions and their impact on neighborhoods surrounding the Port.

Port Everglades Tops Cruise Passenger Record

Port Everglades bested its own cruise passenger record with a preliminary count of 4,010,919 guests embarking and disembarking during Fiscal Year 2024, which ended Sept. 30. The new record is expected to be short lived, however, as 4.4 million guests are anticipated during FY2025. In just one year, from FY2023 to FY2024, cruise passenger counts grew 39% and cruise ship calls rose 23% as the cruise lines fully recovered from the pandemic. The turnaround port’s original record was set in FY2014 with 3,880,033 guests. In 2014, it took 887 cruise ships calls to set the port’s passenger record compared to 648 calls setting the new record this year because the ships are larger.

Cruise Partners Team Up for Holiday Party for Kids in Distress

On Saturday, December 7, FCCA, Holland America Line, and Broward County’s Port Everglades came together to spread holiday cheer for about 40 children from the nonprofit Kids in Distress (KID) as part of an event for the 24th FCCA Foundation Holiday Gift Project that took place onboard Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam at Port Everglades.

“We are beyond grateful for the efforts of so many that have made it possible to relaunch the Holiday Gift Project, which has brought presents and cheer to tens of thousands of underprivileged children over its 22 previous years and will benefit

23 destinations this year,” said Michele M. Paige, FCCA CEO. “This would not be possible without our partnership with Diamonds International, which helped restart the Foundation itself, and Port Everglades, which came in as a partner sponsor for the FCCA Foundation Fundraising Dinner. They have shown the same commitment to our mission of building a foundation for children to support them in the present and future.”

Children ages three to 16 were treated to a three-course lunch, arts-and-crafts, and a visit from Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. The children also received gifts donated by the port and FCCA, along with stuffed animals of Holland America Line’s mascot, Lewie the Lion. The cruise line

wrapped the event by presenting a $5,000 donation to Kids in Distress.

“We are pleased to recognize the positive impact of organizations on the communities we visit,” said Henk Draper, captain of the Holland America Line ship Nieuw Statendam. “We thank Kids in Distress for their incredible work in helping children in need in greater Fort Lauderdale and it was our pleasure to welcome them on board the ship.”

“Port Everglades and Holland America Line share a long history with the cruise line sailing from the port for nearly 90 years, and it was wonderful to support them and our friends at FCCA,” said Port Everglades CEO and Port Director Joseph Morris. “The smiles on the children’s faces made it all worth it.”

Disney Cruise Line Spreads Holiday Cheer

It was a magical day for students and teachers at Albury Sayle Primary School in Nassau. While the Disney Wish was recently in port, Disney Cruise Line cast and crew members joined Mickey Mouse for a surprise visit to the school to celebrate the holiday season and spread joy.

“Disney Cruise Line ships visit Nassau every week, all year long, and for many of our crew members, this community feels like home,” said Bernadette Sweeting-Miller, public affairs manager, Disney Cruise Line. “It means so much to us to bring some Disney magic off the ship and create memorable moments for local students, especially this time of year.”

During the event, 150 primary school students had the opportunity to meet Mickey Mouse, give him a hug and take a photo with him. All the students also received a Disney toy to take home.

“It’s been said that ‘it takes a village to raise a child.’ This is best seen in the educational arena as the community and organizations, like Disney Cruise Line, come together to improve the lives of our students,” said Naria Holbert, principal, Albury Sayle Primary School. “We are grateful for Disney Cruise Line’s support and the generous contributions they’ve provided our school for more than a decade.”

Disney Cruise Line has supported its port communities in The Bahamas during the holiday season for many years. In addition to visiting students in Nassau, the team will continue to spread holiday cheer by providing gifts to schools in Eleuthera, where Disney’s new island destination Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point opened earlier this year, and in Abaco, where Disney Castaway Cay is located.

Developed and operated in partnership with the Bahamian government, Royal Beach Club Paradise Island will incorporate Bahamian influence throughout the architectural design and experience including live music, local

artisan shops and culinary fare. The first in the Royal Beach Club Collection is a modern, responsibly created project developed through a public-private partnership, a first-of-its-kind agreement

in The Bahamas. The construction and operation of the beach club supports the Bahamian workforce through the creation of hundreds of jobs for local businesses and entrepreneurs.

MSC Foundation Supports New Coral Research

The MSC Foundation is supporting valuable new research by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species™ which has warned a staggering 44% of reef-building coral species are at risk of extinction. The findings were announced at the COP29 UN climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Speaking alongside IUCN Deputy Director General Stewart Maginnis and other esteemed panellists at the conference’s Global Corals Update, Daniela Picco, MSC Foundation Executive Director, outlined the Foundation’s support for this global assessment related to coral species and ecosystems, and incorporating the research into its grant-making and conservation efforts.

“This Global Coral Assessment raises the alarm for urgent collective action to stop the decline of coral reefs worldwide. The MSC Foundation is proud to partner with the IUCN Coral Red List team, who have done an exceptional job collecting the data to

assess and report on the status of the world’s reef-building corals,” she said.

“The IUCN Red List guides our Foundation in making science-based philanthropic decisions, for lasting and impactful conservation efforts that contribute to preserving our planet. It will continue to be a vital resource for our family-led Foundation for generations.”

The Foundation’s work on the island of Ocean Cay in The Bahamas to grow resilient Critically Endangered Elkhorn Coral species at its open-water nursery gains new importance with this IUCN Red List assessment.

Through its Super Coral Program and collaboration with offsite university partners since 2020, the 100% survivorship of nursery corals following recent warming events takes on new significance. The program builds upon MSC Cruises’ multi-year restoration of Ocean Cay’s marine ecosystem, which began when the company started redeveloping the former sand-mining site in 2015.

Half Moon Cay to Be Enhanced & Expanded

Half Moon Cay, the highly-rated and award-winning exclusive destination known for beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters in The Bahamas, is being renamed RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay in support of its enhancements and the experience guests can expect as they are immersed in this tropical paradise.

The two cruise lines are partnering on the enhancements, which will include an expanded beachfront experience, lunch venues, a variety of bars, and other features that will reinforce the destination’s natural beauty and tropical appeal. A newly constructed pier on the north side will allow ships to dock, including Carnival’s Excel class ships that will be able to visit the island for the first time.

Guests will arrive at distinct welcome plazas on the island’s south and north sides, spanning over one mile of white-sand beach. The existing development on the south side will receive a refreshing Bahamian touch-up, a new beach club, an updated lunch venue and renovated facilities. The newly developed north side will feature two lunch venues and a variety of island-themed bars. There will also be a new tram service, making getting around easy and convenient. In addition, lounging areas will be expanded, cabanas added and a new shore excursion pier on the north side will connect guests with recreational activities. All RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay upgrades are designed with nature in mind, including architecture that complements the island’s stunning authenticity.

The destination’s enhancements will begin to be completed by summer 2026 and continue through the end of the year.

Sustainability Dialogue in Copenhagen on AIDAnova

On September 27, Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP), the Danish cruise network Cruise Denmark – Copenhagen and Beyond and AIDA Cruises discussed how the three dimensions of sustainability can best be implemented in an efficient, socially and environmentally sustainable manner on board the cruise ship

AIDAnova. Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA Cruises, welcomed members of the Danish Parliament and the Copenhagen City Council, tourism service providers and cruise-related companies on board. The aim of the event was to promote dialogue on sustainable developments in the cruise industry.

The sustainability dialogue offered presentations as well as interactive Q&A sessions that enabled in-depth discussions on environmental initiatives. Guest management in destinations was also discussed. The cruise industry sees itself as part of the solution, as cruises are the easiest form of travel to plan and manage compared to land-based tourism.

One item on the program took participants behind the scenes at AIDAnova , including to the engine control room, the ship’s shore power system and the waste treatment facilities. Here, the participants were able to gain their own impression of AIDA Cruises’ comprehensive sustainability measures and discuss operational and environmental issues directly with the officers of the ship’s departments.

European Excellence: The Backbone of Global Cruise Innovation

Cruise innovation is a European success story. In fact, 97% of the world’s current fleet of cruise ships were built in Europe, and 98% of ships on order will be built there, Over the next dozen years, cruise companies are investing more than $60 billion in new ships built in European shipyards, proving that the region’s shipbuilding industry is more than just tradition—it’s a big economic powerhouse.

This success is not limited to new ship building. European shipyards are also the go-to place for refurbishing and retrofitting cruise ships. Together, tens of thousands of workers and subcontractors contribute to every phase of ship creation and maintenance. And it does not stop there—the cruise industry is built on a massive supply

chain, with everything from steel plates to cutting-edge technology and furnishings for luxurious interiors coming from companies all over Europe, big and small.

Representing 80% of the commercial ship orderbook value for European shipyards, cruise lines are also leading the charge on innovation. They are adding to Europe’s technical know-how and investing in green technology and testing alternative fuels, helping push Europe toward a more sustainable future.

In 2023, the cruise sector and its extensive value chain supported around $58 billion in total economic output and sustained 440,000 jobs across Europe. And with 87% of this year’s shipbuilding contracts (in terms of gross tonnage)

for cruise ships, the industry is clearly providing steady demand. Italy, France, Germany, and Finland remain powerhouses, accounting for the lion’s share of global orders.

Beyond the shipyards, cruise tourism helps support local economies in Europe. Every year, cruise ships dock at over 350 ports, creating jobs and collaborative relationships between the industry and local communities. From treating guests to fresh regional produce to highlighting local craftsmanship, the cruise industry is focused on furthering the symbiotic relationships with the destinations they visit.

In 2024, Aquila emphasized sustainable tourism more than ever. Our Living Lab has been instrumental in developing new tour experiences that resonate with our guests while supporting local communities. Recognizing the importance of preserving the natural beauty and cultural heritage of our destinations, we have introduced the “Excellence in Sustainable Destination Experience” training program. This initiative empowers local stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to create authentic, impactful, and sustainable experiences. Endorsed by the GSTC and aligning operations with their criteria, we ensure that every shore visit leaves a positive impact on the destination and its peoples.

Key Lessons Learned in our Living Lab

1. Community Collaboration: Engaging with local businesses and residents is crucial for creating excursions that are enjoyable for guests and beneficial for the local economy. Our training emphasizes the importance of these relationships, as our living lab has taught us the

importance of ensuring our partners thrive alongside us. For instance, our partnership with local artisans has allowed guests to participate in workshops where they learn traditional crafts, providing a unique cultural experience while supporting local craftsmanship.

2. Flexibility and Adaptation: The ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances is a hallmark of our operations. Whether it’s adjusting to weather conditions or accommodating last-minute guest requests, our team has demonstrated remarkable flexibility. A memorable example was when a sudden rainstorm threatened to dampen a walking tour. Our guides swiftly reorganized the itiner-

ary to include indoor activities, ensuring guests still had an enriching experience.

3. Guest-Centric Approach: Anticipating and understanding guest needs is at the forefront of our philosophy. Personalized experiences and attentive service have resulted in high satisfaction rates and memorable journeys. One such instance was a special request from a guest celebrating a milestone anniversary. Our team arranged a private tour and a surprise celebration, creating an unforgettable moment for the couple.

4. Sustainability Practices: Implementing sustainable practices has not only enhanced the guest experience but also

contributed to the preservation of our destinations. Our training programs emphasize community benefits, value to the operators, eco-friendly activities and waste reduction, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability. For example, our “Leave No Trace” initiative encourages guests to minimize their environmental footprint, and our eco-tours highlight the importance of conservation efforts in the Bay of Fundy.

Real-Life Examples from the Living Lab

One of the standout moments from our Living Lab this season was the introduction of the “Fundy Coast to Table” tour. This excursion takes guests on a culinary journey, starting with a visit to a local farm where they learn about sustainable farming

practices. The tour then moves to a seaside restaurant where guests enjoy a meal prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. This experience not only delights the taste buds but also educates guests on the importance of supporting local agriculture and sustainable food practices.

Another highlight was our collaboration with the Saint John City Market, one of the oldest continuing farmers’ markets in Canada. Guests had the opportunity to meet local vendors, sample regional delicacies, and even try their hand at making traditional dishes. This immersive experience has been a favorite among our guests, providing a deeper connection to the local culture and community.

The Aruba Tourism Authority, in collaboration with Aquila’s Center for Cruise Excellence, hosted a series of courses this year on sustainability, high-value/low-impact tours, and crisis navigation, designed specifically for Aruba’s tour operators. This initiative underscores Aruba’s dedication to responsible tourism and enriching visitor experiences, supporting the island’s vision for the future.

British Virgin Islands Offers Free Training

The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board & Film Commission hosted 2 days of free training for tourism industry workers on 5th and 6th November 2024, in preparation for the 2024/2025 tourist season. Forbes Travel Guide, renowned for their expertise on all aspects of the guest experience, trained a total of 260 workers on Virgin Gorda and Tortola. The training was aimed at strengthening the participants’ skills to elevate the guest experience in the Territory.

BVI Ports Dedicate Peace Poles

Bazin of Haiti joined the Rotary Club of Central Tortola to dedicate two Peace Poles at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park, the cruise pier, on October 31. Bearing the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in multiple languages, these Peace Poles symbolize Rotary’s commitment to global peace. With over 250,000 Peace Poles planted worldwide, this initiative spreads a message of unity and hope.

Port of Cartagena Celebrat es New Award

The “Center for Conservation, Research and Rehabilitation of Wild Fauna-Port Oasis Ecopark” was awarded in the Biodiversity Category at the GRI Infra Awards Andean 2024. This recognition highlights the port’s role in the conservation and protection of the country’s biodiversity. The Port Oasis Ecopark, located at the Cruise Terminal of the Port of Cartagena, is dedicated to the rehabilitation of species rescued from illegal trafficking and possession, operating under license from the Environmental Public Establishment (EPA).

Costa Rica: An Exceptional Destination

Embarking on a cruise to Costa Rica allows passengers to experience natural wonders. Visitors can immerse themselves in “pura vida ,” which emphasizes a relaxed and conscious lifestyle that embodies the essence of Costa Rican culture and its deep connection with nature. Primary and Special Education Students Experience Tourism

From September 23 to October 23, the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) organized the second edition of the Kids Tourism Experience for students of primary and special education schools. Students participated in various tours, workshops and educational activities to get acquainted with the tourism industry. The project is part of the tourism introduction program in schools, which was launched two years ago. A total of 954 students from 28 schools participated in the Kids Tourism Experience 2024.

Ocean World, Puerto Plata Thanks All

Thanks to ongoing support from the cruise industry and visitors, 2024 has been a fantastic year for Ocean World, Puerto Plata. The park expanded its offerings for teenagers and young adults with additional water games featuring inflatable slides, trampolines, and climbing platforms. For adults seeking a blend of relaxation and fun, beach hammocks were added, providing the perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature. Visitors may now enjoy these new additions at leisure.

Puerto Rico Science Park Reopens

Puerto Rico is celebrating the reopening of its beloved Parque de las Ciencias (Science Park) after a $20m transformation, positioning it as one of the Caribbean’s most advanced science parks. Featuring 25 cutting-edge attractions, the park emphasizes education, innovation, and accessibility. Highlights include a NASA-partnered museum, interactive exhibits, and a virtual reality platform offering immersive flight experiences; as well as themed restaurants, virtual reality games, immersive rooms, a planetarium, and the first 3D billboard in the entire Caribbean region. The park is located in the city of Bayamón, a 25-minute drive from the San Juan cruise piers.

U.S. Virgin Islands Welcomes Visitors to Fall Naturally in Rhythm

With the holiday season in full swing and a New Year approaching, the U.S. Virgin Islands welcomes visitors to Fall Naturally in Rhythm with the beat of America’s Caribbean Paradise. During this festive season the island of St. Croix shines hosting the Crucian Christmas Festival, and AgriFest, showcasing the rich and diverse tapestry of the territory’s culture. In 2025 St. Thomas and St. John will welcome new and expanded properties with the opening of the Hampton by Hilton and new accommodations at the Lovango Resort & Beach Club.

Port Everglades Tops Its Own Cruise Passenger Record

Port Everglades bested its own cruise passenger record with a preliminary count of 4,010,919 guests embarking and disembarking during Fiscal Year 2024, which ended September 30, 2024. In just one fiscal year, cruise passenger counts grew 39% and cruise ship calls rose 23%. The turnaround port’s original record was set in FY2014 with 3,880,033 guests. The new record is expected to be short lived, however, as 4.4 million guests are anticipated during FY2025.

Port of Galveston Keeps Getting Better

Cruising from Galveston keeps getting better. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings recently signed a long-term lease to home-

port at Galveston’s fourth terminal when it opens in late 2025. The fourth most popular cruise port in the U.S. is on track to reach a record 1.6 million passengers by the end of 2025.

The Port of Los Angeles

The World Cruise Center is set against the spectacular backdrop of America’s busiest trade gateway, the Port of Los Angeles. Located just 25 miles south of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Downtown Los Angeles on the Port’s emerging LA Waterfront, the World Cruise Center is a popular cruise embarkation point, with over 200 sailings annually. Cruise destinations include Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, Baja California, the Panama Canal, and California’s world-famous Wine Country.

Diamonds International® Helps Belize City Shine Brighter

On September 9, 2024, Diamonds International® collaborated with Oceania Cruises for an essential coastal cleanup in Belize City. Port TampaBay Continues Strong Growth

With the recent addition of Margaritaville at Sea to its portfolio, Port TampaBay continues to experience strong growth of its cruise business and is expected to welcome with over 1.5 million passengers for the 2024-25 season. This will include seven homeported vessels, including three from Royal Caribbean, two from Carnival, and one each from Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and Margaritaville. Anticipating continued growth, the port recently announced its starting to plan for the development of a fourth cruise terminal.

See at Sea was at the FCCA Conference. During the event, we held several meeting with DMCs, port authorities and various destinations to explore how we can contribute to their growth and development. Our discussions focused on enhancing quality, service, training and how to deliver the best and unique experiences for guests with new and innovative tours. Exciting announcements are expected.
