Michele shares insights with Grisha Heyliger-Marten, Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication, as they explore new horizons for St. Maarten

Welcome to this issue of Travel & Cruise, and for many of you reading this in the ‘Friendly Island’ of St. Maarten, welcome to the 30th annual FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show!

All readers are likely aware that cruising is reaching new records with an even brighter future on the horizon through groundbreaking investments in both cruise ships and destinations – and so much of this was only possible through the constant communication and collaboration between destination stakeholders and cruise lines that navigated us through the unprecedented crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As many of you are seeing in person, this synergy only seems to be increasing, and of course our keynote event in St. Maarten is focused on this through its proven formula of meetings, networking and more that have led to the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show being the birthplace of everything from increased calls to entire destination developments.

So, I am confident the growth will not only continue, but also evolve to best suit all parties and long-term sustainability. This issue will show plenty other ways this is already happening, including coverage of one of the FCCA’s new agreements geared towards exactly that: investing for long-term benefits between cruise lines and Quintana Roo (Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico).

Some of FCCA’s other strategic partners also deservedly get the spotlight – from the new records in the British Virgin Islands being driven by cruise tourism and Cayman Islands’ emphasis on sustainability and strategies to increase U.S. tourism, to the knockout performances at the 70th Annual St. John Celebration in the U.S. Virgin Islands and culinary journey with Dominican Republic’s ‘Taste the Paradise’ campaign.

Through it all, the issue touches on the news and developments of both the cruise lines and destinations around the region and world because we firmly believe that the more we know about each other, the better we can actualize mutual benefits.

Thanks again to all of you who have been vital for cruising’s comeback. I am confident we will continue to work together to route the itinerary for a better future.

Respectfully yours,

Autumn is upon us, the changing season a time for harvesting and reflection as we start to plan for a new year. For many cruisers, the turn of weather means heading to the sun and beaches of the Caribbean and Bahamas. This season, the region will welcome several new ships, ranging from Silversea’s ultra-luxurious 728-passenger Silver Ray to the exciting 5,668-passenger Utopia of the Seas from Royal Caribbean. The wide range of new ships and their diverse onboard features are proof that the industry remains on a strong path. As we grow, we are doing so responsibly – partnering with communities on managed growth, with a commitment to protecting the world’s cultural, historical, and natural treasures. The industry continues to advance its environmental and sustainability agenda. Cruise lines are reducing their emissions at sea and at berth in pursuit of net zero emissions by 2050. Our progress is reflected in CLIA’s recently released annual Environmental Technologies and Practices Report. The industry is investing in engine technologies with conversion capabilities that will allow ships to use more renewable energy sources as they become available and making important incremental steps to employ a range of other environmental technologies and practices to advance the industry’s wider sustainability initiatives. Thanks to these and other developments, each new class of ship that comes online is 20% more efficient than the previous.

The cruise industry is building ships now for the future. For instance, ships that run on liquified natural gas (LNG) will be able to switch to zero and near-zero fuels such as bio or synthetic LNG once they are available in the future, with no engine modifications. Of the 41 CLIA member ships being delivered from 2024 through 2028, 28 will be LNG-powered (68%). Cruise lines are also investing in new ships and engines with capability to operate on green methanol. These investments will accelerate the transition to low and zero carbon fuels, which is critical for cruise lines to meet their ambitious climate goals.

Onshore power is an important component in the industry’s work to reduce emissions. Earlier this summer, PortMiami became the first major cruise port on the U.S. eastern seaboard offering shore power connections at five cruise berths. While 147 CLIA member ships (52% of the fleet) can connect to onshore power, less than 3% of the world’s cruise ports currently offer this. It is essential that shoreside electricity projects are pursued and that they benefit from the financial support of national and local authorities in ports where implementation is possible.

CLIA remains focused on furthering awareness of the industry’s successes and efforts with governments around the world to secure the legislative and regulatory conditions needed to operate and grow responsibly. Please check out the CLIA website at www.cruising.org for the newest research and information to help you further the messaging in your own communities with key stakeholders.

Additionally, CLIA’s annual Cruise Forward Summit will be held November 6-8 in Miami. This annual event is another chance to engage with industry leaders on a variety of compelling maritime, tourism, and supply chain topics and explore issues affecting the entire cruise community. New this year at Cruise Forward is a Ports and Destinations 1:1 Exchange a Business Partner Spotlight Session (exclusively for CLIA members and partners).

Wishing you a successful and healthy fall.

Together in cruise,

Port St. Maarten: 60+ A Maritime Milestone, Sailing to New Horizons & Seizing Every Opportunity

Destination St. Maarten Welcomes the 30th Annual FCCA Cruise Conference & Tradeshow

Destination St. Maarten has clocked many milestones over the past 60+ years as a successful vacation destination. The country’s port facilities have been part of this success along with quality service and operational excellence. Over the past decades Port St. Maarten has gone through continuous development and innovation.

Several activities have been developed and evolved within the development of the cruise services sector on the island. Some of the top tours and activities for visitors while on the ‘Friendly Island’ are Rainforest Adventures (home of the steepest zipline in the world), ATV tours, snorkeling/day trips, sunset tours (to see the airplanes landing), double-decker bus tours, 12 Metre Regatta, island hopping, shopping excursions, island tours (with taxis and small tour operators), and beer and rum factory tours.

Destination St. Maarten is also well known as the culinary capital of the Caribbean with dozens of restaurants featuring innovative entrees and fine dining showcasing a vibrant food scene, which is connected to the island’s rich cultural history. St. Maarten’s culinary scene is a fusion of global flavors and island traditions.

As part of its mission, Port St. Maarten has provided quality integrated

Minister of Tourism & Economic Affairs Hon. Grisha Heyliger Marten’s “dedication to enhancing St. Maarten’s beauty and functionality”

services to its customers while maintaining a leadership role in the economic development of St. Maarten. St. Maarten has focused on the future during the past six decades while valuing its past.

It is with great honor that destination St. Maarten is the host of the 30th annual Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Cruise Conference & Tradeshow. Cruise tourism is an integral part of St. Maarten’s tourism product and an important strategic income generator and for visitor arrivals.

At the FCCA Cruise Conference & Tradeshow, where informative discussions

will take place providing insight into issues, challenges and opportunities, partnerships will also be renewed to achieve a common goal in delivering the best and most amazing guests experiences that can be provided by a destination that cruisers have come to love.

Port St. Maarten Group, under the leadership of the industry veteran Alexander Gumbs and his dynamic team, will continue to make new maritime milestones and sailing to new horizons while seizing every opportunity and more as we have done for past six decades.

Wishing everyone a warm welcome to St. Maarten/St. Martin!

The Minister of Tourism & Economic Affairs Hon. Grisha Heyliger Marten

Grisha Heyliger-Marten, affectionately known in the community as “Grisha”, was born on St. Maarten, from a Curaçaolenean mother and an Anguillan father. After finishing her secondary education at Milton Peters College, Grisha obtained her associate degree in business administration at the University of St. Martin in 1997.

She then furthered her education at the Florida Metropolitan University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in management with a minor in Marketing in 2000. After returning to her island of birth and

having worked at SMITCOMS for a short while, Grisha decided to pursue a master’s degree in international business at The Hague University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, graduating in 2002.

Grisha then returned to SMITCOMS (St. Maarten International Communications Company), where she worked as Marketing and Sales Manager until 2008. After a short professional hiatus, she then ventured off on her own in 2009 as CEO of Marketing, Sales, and Event Planning at Montage N.V.

In 2019, being the wife of prominent politician Theodore Heyliger and mother of three boys, she answered the call to contribute to the development of her island nation as a servant of the people. Grisha postulated herself as a candidate in St. Maarten’s Parliamentary elections and was elected to Parliament for the period of 2020-2024.

As a Member of Parliament (MP), Grisha gave content to her campaign platform and mantra of standing for the people of her nation by working on improving the lives of the citizens she represents.

Driven by her strong convictions, morals, and aversion against injustice, MP Heyliger Marten addressed the injustices within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and on St. Maarten in her capacities of faction leader of the UP party, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee of Justice, First Vice-Chair and Chair of the Parliament of St. Maarten.

In 2023 and realizing that her work as an MP was not yet completed, Grisha decided to postulate herself for a second Parliamentary term and participated in the elections slated for January 11, 2024. After the elections, Grisha has been serving as Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs,

Transport and Telecommunication since May 2024.

Besides helping people in her community in the broadest sense of the word, Grisha enjoys spending time with her extensive family, cooking, music, and cultural events.

Tourism Infrastructure & Destination Improvements

Since taking office in the second quarter of 2024, Minister of Tourism & Economic Affairs Grisha Heyliger Marten has made it a priority to enhance the aesthetics and overall experience of the St. Maarten tourism product. Her commitment to beautification projects has already begun to transform the island’s landscape.

One of the minister’s initial projects was a collaboration with the Port St. Maarten Group (PSG) to beautify the cruise corridor leading to the port. Phase 1 of this project is underway, promising a more visually appealing gateway for visitors. Additionally, the minister shared the vision which aligns with the port strategic plan in further developing the ports strategic assets.

A significant milestone was reached on September 9 with the groundbreaking of the Soualiga Marketplace. This highly anticipated market will showcase local crafts and wares, promoting cultural heritage and supporting local businesses.

Beyond aesthetics, the minister has also focused on improving the island’s infrastructure. The minister has also called for improvements to the cargo facility to streamline the handling of essential goods, ensuring a more efficient supply chain.

To further enhance the visitor experience and drive economic growth, the minister is developing a master plan for

the economic and aesthetic enhancement of Phillipsburg, the island’s capital.

This plan includes initiatives to beautify the area, improve visitor experiences, and promote local businesses. To manage these improvements effectively, the minister is considering implementing a city manager concept for Phillipsburg.

To provide visitors with convenient access to information, digital kiosks will be placed throughout Phillipsburg. These kiosks will offer a variety of information, including store and restaurant directories, cultural and historical details, and other useful resources.

In addition, the minister has introduced the “Soualiga Routes” initiative, aimed at identifying key locations along popular tourist routes where local art can be displayed. This will showcase the island’s artistic talent and enrich the visitor’s experience. Furthermore, Minister Heyliger Marten plans to clean and restore national monuments in a phased approach, preserving our historical heritage.

Her dedication to enhancing St. Maarten’s beauty and functionality is evident in her ambitious plans. These initiatives are poised to transform the island, making it an even more attractive destination for both residents and visitors alike.

The Port St. Maarten Group (PSG) at the time was elated with this recognition. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Alexander Gumbs said, “This accolade is for the people and the stakeholders of St. Maarten. It is because of you we are the #1 cruise port in the region. It is due to the service and hospitality that has been provided to our cruise guests. This is something to be proud of and for us to continue doing what we do best so we can maintain the status of #1 cruise port. Thank you, St. Maarten, for making us #1.”

Gumbs added that Port St. Maarten is looking ahead to accommodating 1.6 million cruise passengers in 2025.

The CruiseFever accolade says: “With a French side and a Dutch side, this 13 square

mile island is one of the busiest cruise ports on our list. In fact, Port of Philipsburg in St. Maarten saw at least 1.3 million cruise passengers last year (2023), with almost 500 cruise ships pulling into port.

“Cruise passengers love both the culture of the area as well as the natural beauty. There are 37 beaches around the island, and according to some sources the island holds the record for the most beaches per square mile.

“St. Maarten was the most mentioned favorite cruise port, and as more cruise itineraries have this port of call on their schedule, more cruisers have had the chance to explore this little slice of paradise.”

St. Maarten Ready to Welcome the Cruise Industry at the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show

Nearly 1,000 people representing all facets of the cruise industry, including almost 100 cruise executives, will soon land in Philipsburg, St. Maarten for the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show, “the only event in the region that puts any attendee in direct contact with cruise executives that can drive business,” according to Micky Arison, Chairman, Carnival Corporation and FCCA.

“We are proud of this event’s continued success for attendees and so many throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Mexico,” said Michele Paige, CEO, FCCA. “The FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show has been the birthplace of everything from new tours to entire destination developments, so we are excited about what this year can bring for our destination partners, along with what developments it can bring for St. Maarten by showcasing some of its stunning sights, sounds, and food.”

That will be done through the new format focused on one-on-one meetings and workshops that launched in 2022 and has featured a record number of one-on-one meetings every year since. Any preregistered delegate can schedule a series of 15-minute meetings with participating executives to pitch their product

and receive individualized input, with the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show being the only event in the region offering this direct contact with cruise executives –and FCCA also coordinates private meetings for its destination partners.

“The one-on-one meetings allow for us to address the specific concerns or learn about new products,” Albino Di Lorenzo, Vice President of Operations for MSC Cruises USA. “This is an important tool for both the attendees and the cruise industry. For us, we frequently learn about new developments and products, and we can help fine-tune them to best fit the cruise lines. For the attendees, it gives them a real vantage point in knowing what the lines are looking for and how to appeal to them.”

The agenda also includes other meetings, such as the President/CEO & Ministers Forum, where Ministers of Tourism will join presidents and above from FCCA Member Lines to discuss issues regarding the region, with it open to any suggested topics. Currently on the table are an increase in summer traffic and passenger/crew spending, better experiences, investment opportunities and development of new ports.

This year’s event will also feature the first-ever ‘Presidents Dinner.’ Slated

for the evening of Tuesday, October 22, the exclusive, executive-packed event has been created so any interested party can move business with the cruise industry full steam ahead. The invitation-only event will be coordinated by FCCA and supported by FCCA Member Cruise Lines, with Presidents, CEOs, and more high-level cruise executives hosting tables that will be open for industry stakeholders looking to build business and relationships, while enjoying a festive night with a boatload of surprises.

“We have always prided ourselves in offering direct opportunities for local stakeholders to maximize their benefits from cruise tourism, and this new function was built with that in mind,” said Paige. “I cannot wait to see what results this brings for our partners and for the ‘Presidents Dinner’ to become a fixture at the FCCA Cruise Conference and Trade Show.”

“… the only event in the region that puts any attendee in direct contact with cruise executives that can drive business.”

FCCA

“FCCA has a way of making business and networking fun at events like this, and I am confident that this one will not to be missed,” said Arison.

A series of workshops led by cruise executives and experts also headline the event and will give attendees the knowledge needed to develop mutual understanding. Additionally, relationships will be fostered with a robust plan of networking events that will bring the group closer to close deals, while also giving a sampling of St. Maarten – from an exclusive Platinum Member tour at St. Barth’s Getaway to nightly receptions that will join the group in engaging atmospheres.

Plus, outside of island hopping, nobody needs to travel far, with all business functions taking place at the official Conference hotels: Sonesta Maho Beach Casino and Spa All-Inclusive Resort and Sonesta Ocean Point Luxury Adults Only All-Inclusive Resort.

Cruise Trends to Know About

Cruising remains a favored choice for travelers seeking a memorable vacation experience, as they offer a unique blend of complimentary amenities, exploration, and relaxation. As the travel industry continues to evolve, the trends shaping the cruise world do as well, reflecting changing consumer preferences and technological advancements.

Every year, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) releases its “State of the Cruise Industry Report,” which provides insight into the current trends, facts, and forecasts regarding the industry.

From an increase in solo travel to a wider array of itineraries, here are some industry trends you should know about so you can maximize the again ever-growing cruise industry.

Younger generations are the future of cruise

The demand for cruising is at an alltime high, with cabins selling out further in advance.

During Royal Caribbean Group’s earnings call on February 1, Jason Liberty, President & CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, said, “...while our capacity is up 8.5% year over year, we have less inventory available to book in 2024 than we did a year ago for 2023 and half as many staterooms left in [the first quarter].”

Demand, however, relies on interest. According to the CLIA’s 2023 State of the Industry Report, 88% of Millennials and 86% of Gen-X travelers who have cruised before say they plan to hit the high seas again, indicating that the demand won’t decrease anytime soon. In fact, the enthu-

siasm for cruising amongst younger generations, particularly Millennials, suggests a promising future for the industry.

The 2024 State of the Industry Report revealed that 46 is the average age of cruisers. Moreover, 36% of passengers are under the age of 40.

More interest than ever among Millennials and Gen-X travelers to take their first cruise

From the convenience to variety of destinations, onboard amenities, and so much more, cruising is becoming more appealing to those who have yet to sail.

In fact, 73% of people who have never cruised said that they would consider taking one. Millennials showed the most interest, with 77% of respondents claiming they would consider cruising in the future. Gen-X followed suit at 73%. The 2024 report revealed that 27% of cruisers in the past two years are new-to-cruise.

Best for new cruisers (and anyone, really) is that there’s really something for everyone. Adults seeking a more upscale vacation that emphasizes unique ports of call may prefer sailing with Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, or Holland America Line, whereas those who want a cruise line and ship to appease a multi-generational family vacation has options like Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, and Carnival Cruise Line.

Solo cruise travel on the rise

According to the 2023 State of the Industry Report, cruise lines are responding to the increased demand for solo travel by increasing the number

of cabins available for single travelers on newer and older vessels.

Norwegian Cruise Line, for instance, announced in October 2023 that they’d be adding three new categories of solo cabins to their fleet, effectively increasing the options and available number of staterooms available to those traveling by themselves.

Today, 8-13% of cruise travelers are traveling solo, with 10% embarking from U.S. ports and 13% from Canadian ports.

Acceleration of environmental technologies and practices

The cruise industry is aiming towards net-zero carbon cruising by 2020. To accomplish this, there are numerous environmentally friendly programs and initiatives in place. For example, 96% of CLIA cruise ships have low friction hull coatings and air lubrication systems that help increase fuel efficiency by nearly 10%.

Moreover, there are 38 LNG-powered ships expected to be in service by 2028 – adding to the current fleet of 19 LNGpowered ships at sea. LNG has virtually zero sulfur emissions and particulate emissions, reduces NOx emissions by approximately 85% and achieves up to a 20% reduction in GHG emissions.

Environmental commitment of cruisers growing

Cruise lines aren’t the only ones embracing the environment. The 2023 State of the Industry Report indicated that 50% of current and potential cruisers are more committed to making travel decisions based on environmental impacts compared to three years ago.

From large-scale efforts like investing in advanced wastewater treatment systems to eliminating the use of single-use plastic

straws onboard ships, the heightened environmental consciousness among travelers highlights the importance of sustainability efforts within the cruise industry.

These initiatives provide passengers with insights into environmental challenges and empower them to make informed choices to minimize their impact while cruising. As a result, 84% of passengers said they’re more aware of the responsible nature of cruise travel and the importance of the environment.

Onboard MSC ships, for example, you may run into an area dedicated to the MSC Foundation, MSC’s non-profit organization that focuses on environmental conversation, community support, education, and energy efficiency.

Additionally, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the cruise line’s private island in The Bahamas, was a former industrial site that they restored into a tropical paradise. In fact, they’ve helped native species return to the island.

Accessible cabins increasing

Cruise lines have acknowledged that they’re a convenient option for those with limited mobility. In addition to more accessible cabins that feature more living space and larger ensuite bathrooms, some lines, namely Carnival Cruise Line, have strived to become more sensory-friendly.

All of Carnival’s ships have been certified as sensory-inclusive by Kulture City, a leading nonprofit dedicated to accessibility and inclusion for individuals with sensory and invisible disabilities. On embarkation day, you can visit Guest Services to check out a sensory kit that includes noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, a visual feeling thermometer, and more to help make the cruise experience more enjoyable to those who may otherwise become easily overstimulated.

Moreover, cruise lines have begun offering accessible shore excursions, with over 100 excursions available in ports of call. 45% of travelers booked one of these accessible excursions within the past year.

Younger cruisers turn to travel advisors more so than any other generation Younger cruisers—from Gen Z to Millennials to Gen X—rely on the expertise of travel agents 50% more than Traditionalists and Baby Boomers. Not only can they provide exclusive rates that aren’t shown on the cruise line’s website, but they can also advise you on shore excursions, cabins, and more to help meet your specific needs.

First-time cruisers will greatly benefit from working with a travel agent, as they can help you decide what line, ship, and itinerary is best for you, whether you’re a retired individual seeking a quiet adults-only trip or a soon-to-be

college graduate hoping to celebrate your major achievement.

If you’re traveling with a large family, they can help manage everyone’s bookings and reserve specialty restaurants and shore excursions, leaving you with less to worry about in the months and weeks leading up to your sailing.

Cruises appeal to multigenerational travelers

Over the years, cruising has evolved to cater to multigenerational families to provide the ultimate family vacation, and today, 28% of cruisers are sailing with family members representing at least two generations.

Icon of the Seas, for example, was designed to offer thrills for younger travelers, as well as places for grandparents to relax. After racing down the water slides

at the Category 6 Water Park, families can gather at Basecamp for a bite to eat to talk about the morning’s adventures. Royal Caribbean also spent time designing cabins suitable for larger families, with 80% of staterooms onboard able to accommodate three or more guests.

More than 300 ocean-going vessels projected for 2024

There’s no shortage of cruise ships available to meet the needs of your next vacation. According to CLIA, the increase in cruise ships and itineraries is well-timed to meet the strong demand for cruise travel. In fact, cruise travel reached 107% of 2019 levels in 2023. Forecasts are predicting that by 2027, cruising will grow to welcome nearly 40 million passengers.

Though there are numerous ships to choose from, with the number continuing to increase, inventory is selling out further in advance – highlighting the growing demand.

Traveler interest in booking an expedition cruise is higher than ever

Expedition vessels, some of the smallest of them all, have become more popular over the years, with the number of guests sail-

ing on expedition cruises more than doubling between 2016 and 2022. Additionally, search results for expedition cruises to Antarctica increased by 51% in 2022 compared to 2019. Though mainstream cruise lines sail to Antarctica, you cannot step ashore unless you’re on a smaller vessel due to local restrictions designed to help preserve the fragile environment.

Cruise lines are offering more immersive opportunities

Cruise lines have begun to offer longer stays, including overnight visits, in certain ports. Whether you want more time to fully experience the amenities and activities onboard the ship or explore more destinations, longer cruises give more time to savor every moment of your vacation.

According to the 2023 State of the Industry Report, 43% of cruisers say they want to

book a longer sailing. Moreover, 43% say they want to book one that is a similar length to their last one.

Family and friends have the most influence on decisions to book

86% of cruisers reported that friends and family had some influence or significant influence in their choice to cruise, highlighting the importance of social connections and recommendations in shaping travelers’ decisions.

Whether you’ve heard a memorable story from a coworker or a horror story from a family member, personal networks greatly influence an individual’s decision on booking a cruise or not.

This statistic also emphasizes the importance of fostering positive relationships with passengers and providing exceptional service onboard, as it will inspire them to share their experiences with others.

The Luxury Cruise Boom: Small Ships, Big Experiences

The luxury cruise market has evolved significantly over the past decade, growing more than 40% every five years since 2010 based on the number of ships in the category. In 2022, there were 70 luxury ships, or 27% of the overall cruise market. The current orderbook shows 97 luxury ships forecast by 2028, representing 34% of the total market.

Growth in the luxury segment is being driven by new ships and new brands coming online, including an increase in the number of expedition ships offering luxury travel – some even capable of polar exploration. Luxury also extends beyond the oceans to river cruises. The value of a luxury cruise experience compared to land-based luxury travel is

also a strong driver of growth. Passenger volume on luxury cruises is forecast to reach 1.5 million in 2028 – a 328% increase since 2010.

Global Cruise Industry Environmental Technologies and Practices Report

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) recently released its annual Global Cruise Industry Environmental Technologies and Practices Report, showing the continued progress by the industry in advancing its environmental and sustainability agenda, including investments in ships and technologies for the uptake of transitional and alternative fuels. The full report can be found on CLIA’s website, and highlights reflecting the CLIA member fleet include:

Fleet Profile

• The ocean fleet includes 303 ships and a total capacity of 635,000 lower berths operated by 45 cruise line brands representing 90% of capacity — an increase of 3.6% and 3.34% respectively, compared to the previous year.

• The majority of ocean-going ships are small to mid-size ships, with the distribution as follows:

• 35% small ships with fewer than 1,000 lower berths

• 38% mid-size ships with 1,000 to less than 3,000 lower berths

• 26% large ships with more than 3,000 lower berths

Fuel Flexibility

Cruise lines are investing in new ships and engines that allow for fuel flexibility. This includes capability to use renewable biodies el, investments in the capability to use green methanol when available, and liquified nat ural gas (LNG). Ships designed with engines and fuel supply systems able to operate on LNG will be able to switch to zero and near-zero fuels such as bio or synthetic LNG in the future, with no engine modifications. Currently, 19 ships (7% of the fleet) are using LNG for primary propulsion. LNG has virtually zero sulfur emis sions and particulate emissions, reduces NOx emissions by approximately 85% and achieves up to a 20% reduction in GHG emissions. Multiple reports confirm that methane slip (small amounts of

escaped methane) – an acknowledged issue with LNG engines – is on a path to be nearly eradicated, with some industry stakeholders claiming that slip values of less than 1% is achievable within the next few years.

Selective Catalytic Reduction Technology (SCR)

• 71 ships, representing 25% of the fleet, have SCR systems — an increase of 34% from 2023.

SCR reduces particulate matter and nitrogen oxides emissions, thus helping ships to meet IMO Tier III classification standards for nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx).

Onshore Power Supply (OPS)

Plugging in to onshore power when ships are in port allows engines to be switched off, achieving significant overall pollutant emissions reductions of up to 98%, depending on the mix of energy sourc-

es, according to studies conducted by a number of the world’s ports and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Across the fleet:

• 147 ships (52%) are able to connect to OPS – an increase of 167% since 2018.

• By 2028, 239 ships will be able to connect to onshore power.

CLIA champions the advancement of onshore power infrastructure as an important component in the industry’s work to reduce emissions and supports continued development of cost-effective infrastructure for clean shoreside electricity in cruise ports when the net impact delivers an overall emission reduction. Currently less than three percent of the world’s cruise ports offer onshore power.

Advanced Wastewater Treatment Systems (AWTS)

Most cruise ships sailing today utilize advanced wastewater treatment systems (AWTS), which are capable of exceeding MARPOL Annex IV requirements and perform better than shoreside treatment plants in some coastal cities. In addition, as part of their overarching sustainability focus, cruise lines have committed to not release untreated sewage anywhere in the world, during normal operations. Currently, 225 ships (80%) are equipped with AWTS – a 65% increase from 2018.

Freshwater production

The majority of CLIA members produce their own fresh water onboard their ships, with 267 ships (94%) able to do so — of which 172 (60%) can produce enough water to match their total consumption. Together with its members and partners, CLIA supports policies and practices that foster safe, healthy and sustainable cruise operations; tourism strategies that maximize the socioeconomic benefits of cruise travel; and technologies and innovations that help protect and preserve the planet.

When Disney Cruise Line unveiled new details about legendary cruise vacations on the horizon for guests aboard the Disney Destiny, Disney Cruise Line’s new heroes and villains-inspired ship, setting sail in late 2025 from Port Everglades, that alone was huge news.

The highly anticipated ship will be fueled by a diverse range of Disney, Pixar and Marvel characters serving as the inspiration behind themed venues and entertainment aboard the ship, including a first-of-its-kind dining experience inspired by the unforgettable music of “The Lion King;” an exclusive confectionary themed to “The Incredibles;” hero-worthy staterooms and concierge accommodations; and Marvel-inspired experiences.

Yet amidst a period of unprecedented growth, Disney Cruise Line shared more exciting news during D23, The Ultimate Fan Event, including further expansion of the fleet and new details about the signature entertainment coming to Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny in 2024 and 2025.

Disney Cruise Line Expansion

An additional four ships will join the award-winning fleet, giving families more opportunities to experience the world-class dining, exceptional entertainment, and signature hospitality that Disney Cruise Line is known for.

With five ships in the current fleet and four others already in the works, the additional four ships will bring the fleet

Broadway-Caliber Shows to Debut

When Disney Destiny sets sail in November 2025, it will bring spaces and experiences inspired by legendary Disney heroes and villains to the high seas. Onboard, one such tale of good vs. evil will come to life when everyone’s favorite Greek gladiator takes center stage in the Walt Disney Theatre in “Disney Hercules,” an all-new, Broadway-style show developed exclusively for Disney Destiny

The high-energy show will be filled with the celebrated songs and largerthan-life characters from the Walt Disney Animation Studios movie, presented in an all-new way. “Disney Hercules” will stay true to the story and spirit of the film while showcasing a fresh, modern adaptation tailor-made for the stage.

“Disney The Tale of Moana” will bring Moana’s unforgettable comingof-age adventures from the Walt Disney Animation Studios film to live audiences for the first time onboard Disney Treasure. Audiences will see many of their favorite characters from the film reimagined as puppets, including a young version of Moana. The captivating array of puppetry is being developed for the show by Jeff Conover, creative director of puppetry and articulation for Disney Live Entertainment, and Michael Curry, whose previous credits include “The Lion King” on Broadway.

Disney Imagination Garden to Bloom with Boundless Storytelling Onboard Disney Adventure

Disney Imagination Garden, the central hub of the ship, will be an immersive, enchanted valley inspired by 100 years of heroic and heartwarming Disney adventures. The colorful landscapes of Disney Imagination Garden will transport guests into the pages of well-loved Disney stories alongside their favorite characters. The vibrant, open-air garden will be set against a three-decktall, stunning storybook castle art piece, a

first-of-its-kind onboard a Disney Cruise Line ship. The space will also include a state-of-the art theatrical stage that will bring beloved Disney stories to life, two quick-service eateries, an alluring bar and a selection of garden-view staterooms.

Methanol Capable Celebrity Xcel Begins Construction

Construction has commenced for Celebrity Cruises’ next ship, Celebrity Xcel. The keel laying ceremony at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France celebrated the momentous occasion for the latest and most elevated vessel in Celebrity’s award-winning Edge Series ships – and the first methanol capable ship.

“Each new ship also represents an opportunity to advance our journey to net zero, and with Xcel, we are building our first methanol capable ship, which helps advance our transition to the energy platform of the future,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group.

“We can’t wait to debut Celebrity Xcel and her unrivaled guest experiences, living up to her name in every way with surprises that confirm ‘Nothing Comes Close’ to a Celebrity vacation,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises.

Pushing the boundaries of leisure travel, Celebrity Xcel will advance Royal Caribbean Group’s decades-long commitment to sustaining the planet with the first tri-fuel capable engine. The new engine will provide unmatched fuel flexibility, with the ability to use three types of fuel, including methanol, a first for the company, and represents an important steppingstone on the company’s journey to Destination Net Zero, its vision for net-zero emissions by 2050.

Celebrity Xcel will make her debut in November 2025 in the Caribbean, sailing her inaugural season from Fort Lauderdale, on seven-night itineraries alternating between the Bahamas, Mexico and the Cayman Islands, Puerto Plata, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten.

Cunard announced record-breaking bookings following the highly anticipated launch of its new ship Queen Anne

The 3,000-guest vessel set sail on an historic maiden voyage on May 3 before returning to her homeport of Southampton on May 24 to begin her celebratory British Isles Festival voyage – which included a spectacular naming ceremony in Liverpool – and the luxury cruise brand booked more guests in May than any equivalent period on record, with Queen Anne Europe itineraries proving to be particularly popular with guests.

Culture Liverpool estimates that more than 50,000 people attended Queen Anne’s naming ceremony, with thousands more lining the banks of the River Mersey to witness her arrival in the city. Cunard also generated over 21 million impressions across social media channels on the day of the event.

“We’re delighted to see such strong booking momentum in response to the successful launch of Queen Anne,” said Cunard President Katie McAlister. “This record-breaking booking period is testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team, and we’re excited to have the opportunity to welcome so many new guests on board Queen Anne and the rest of our iconic fleet in the future.”

Seabourn Pursuit’s Historic Naming Ceremony

Seabourn named Seabourn Pursuit in a unique and historic expedition naming ceremony at Ngula Jar Island, Australia, on June 29. With guests on Zodiacs alongside the ship and the onboard team lined up along the decks, the Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners named Seabourn Pursuit, marking the first time Traditional Owners named a ship.

Seabourn President Natalya Leahy shared her excitement about the special relationship Seabourn has built with the Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners – their country and people – whose rich cultural history, deep connection to the land and sea, and established sustainable tourism initiatives, combine to make them a natural fit to be godparents for Seabourn Pursuit.

“This day marks a very special event with the christening of Seabourn Pursuit, our newest ultra-luxury purpose-built expedition ship. This is a wonderful maritime tradition, and today is extra special for us because we asked the Wunambal Gaambera to be the ship’s godparents, which marks the beginning of long sustainable partnership between our brand and this community. We know our guests visit these wonderful places in the world because they believe in the transformative power of travel, and today we celebrate exactly this,” said Leahy.

Seabourn Pursuit offers the same luxurious small ship experience that travelers have come to expect from Seabourn, enhanced by world-class equipment that allows the line to offer its widest range of expedition activities led by an expert 24-person expedition team of scientists, scholars, naturalists, and more. Designed and built for remote, diverse environments to PC6 Polar Class

standards, the ship includes a plethora of modern hardware and technology that extends the ship’s global deployment and capabilities. There is close to 30,000 square feet of deck space and special touches at every turn, as well as indoor and outdoor guest areas with nearly 270-degree views. In addition, a 4K GSS Cineflex Camera is mounted on the mast of the Constellation Lounge and capable of broadcasting imagery from miles ahead on monitors located throughout the ship and in guest suites.

Silversea Names Silver Ray & Celebrates 30th Anniversary

When Silversea officially named Silver Ray, the second ship in its innovative Nova Class, it also continued a banner year for the brand, which celebrated its 30th anniversary and marked three decades as a pioneer and leader in ultra-luxury and expedition cruise travel.

In the British Virgin Islands, Cruise Raises the Tides of Tourism to New Records

The first six months of 2024 set a tourism record, bringing the most visitor arrivals of any first half in Virgin Islands history and causing Premier Dr. Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley to express “delight” in the “historic performance.”

Notably, this record was driven mostly by a dramatic post-pandemic surge in cruise ship passengers. In fact, despite these records, overnight visitor numbers for the first half of this year were actually 24% below their 2017 first-half peak of about 243,000.

Cruise passengers are clearly buoying total tourist arrivals. Between 2013 and 2017, cruisers made up about 57% of first-half arrivals, peaking at just over 62% in 2016. In the first half of 2023 and 2024, by contrast, they made up about 72% of total arrivals.

The recent arrival numbers appear overwhelmingly positive across the board. From January through June of this year, about 683,000 visitors came to the territory, including some 490,000 cruise passengers and about 185,000 overnight guests, with day-trippers making up the rest.

That marks an approximately 17% increase from the approximately 582,000 visitors who came in the first six months of 2023 — nearly 422,000 cruise tourists and about 155,000 overnighters, with day-trippers making up the difference.

“We’ve partnered with [FCCA] so that we can get more numbers into our shores and make sure that the guest experience is where they intend to visit and come back again.”
—Kye Rymer Communications & Works Minister

Dr. Wheatley cited these increases in July when praising the sector’s first-half performance, noting that 2024 cruise arrivals were up 16.2% and overnight arrivals 19.3% over the first half of 2023.

“These figures underscore the Virgin Islands’ enduring appeal,” Dr. Wheatley said in a press release, adding that his government looks forward to “building on this momentum and welcoming even more visitors to our beautiful islands.”

These numbers – especially the overnight arrivals – should only continue to grow once the British Virgin Islands checks back in the numerous hotels and resorts that are in the process of opening and repairing from hurricane damage.

One new opening includes the ultraluxe all-inclusive resort Moskito Island Estates debuting the Cape Stout estate. The six-building, seven-suite estate sits on three acres, sleeps 14 and has four pools and three Jacuzzis, including a canal-style pool that runs throughout the ground floor and exterior of the property.

The yachting sector, which brings in most of the rest of the territory’s overnight

visitors, has also reported a halting recovery in recent months.

According to Jeremy Twist, the charter manager for Conch Charters, most charter companies are “all back at pre-Irma numbers or thereabouts.”

The sector, he added, has also “mostly recovered” from the Covid-19 pandemic aside from a lingering “financial effect.”

“Forward bookings are looking good,” Mr. Twist added. “At least in our business, I can’t go up to other charter companies and get exact information, but I can speak to them, and the feedback I’m getting is, yeah, next season’s looking way better.”

More cruisers on the horizon

In May, government officials celebrated the cruise boom during a joint press conference with cruise executives.

“We’ve partnered with [FloridaCaribbean Cruise Association] so that we can get more numbers into our shores and make sure that the guest experience is where they intend to visit and come back again,” Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer said during the press conference.

FCCA CEO Michele Paige made similar promises and optimistic forecasts: “Your high number of [2016] was over 600,000 cruise passengers you reached,” Ms. Paige said. “This year, you’re forecasted to reach well over 800,000.”

The British Virgin Islands is an FCCA ‘Presidential Partner’ – the Association’s highest level and exclusive strategic development agreement that not only utilizes all the Association’s resources to help improve cruise tourism and offerings, but also works directly with the destination to establish and effectuate goals.

“This new agreement shows the momentum that FCCA and destinations are having in working together to maximize cruise tourism’s benefits,” said Micky Arison, Chairman of FCCA and Carnival Corporation & plc, when the partnership was formed in early 2023. “The British Virgin Islands has been a long-standing partner of the industry, and I am thrilled that this agreement sig-

nifies the improvement of so many lives and livelihoods.”

“We are proud of our past work with the British Virgin Islands and honored that they have again put their faith in us and the cruise industry,” said Paige when forming the agreement. “Through this agreement, FCCA is fully committed to fulfilling individualized initiatives, which focus on assisting the private sector, improving employment, fostering cruise lines’ purchase of local goods and more that will help locals prosper from the economic impact that the industry brings.”

Cayman Islands’ Minister Bryan Focused on Sustainable Tourism, Destination’s Sights on Increasing North American Arrivals

Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan emphasized to regional tourism delegates that Cayman plans to concentrate on quality over quantity.

During a media interview at the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s Caribbean Travel Marketplace, he said that the focus now is “quality over quantity equals sustainability” – and added that Cayman, which he regarded as a “top notch destination,” is aiming for a sustainable tourism product.

“We don’t necessarily have to increase the numbers for the quality of service. Marginal increases are good, but you don’t want to do it that it is detrimental to the foundation of what you have,” he said.

He added that Cayman has a “white glove approach” when it comes to all its tourists “regardless of what price point you come in” – an approach that he told is the Cayman Islands way.

However, he said the island is also

examining how to balance sustainability and tourism.

“Do we have enough here? Do we want to transition to different areas of tourism, eco-tourism, wellness, tourism, knowing that it’s not all leisure. So, we are all about analysis to make sure it’s sustainable, not about just more and more and more,” he said.

Bryan added that of course the island would like more – “but more for the right reasons”.

He said he thinks Cayman is “doing a good job of that, numbers are looking good, and we will continue on that path.”

Bryan, who was also the chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization, pointed out that the conference being held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre featured key discussions on issues that could affect tourism in the region as well as in Cayman.

He said working with the Caribbean Hotel Tourism Organization is very important to continued collaboration for industry stakeholders and “was no different than talking to the airlines or talking to the tours, hotels and properties that are essential to the equation and the puzzle of delivering an experience”.

He said some of the presentations have been “really enlightening” along with the data that is being collected from the region.

“Data always tells you the truth and the facts… how to solve problems,” he said, adding there was also a good panel discussion about integration and togetherness with respect to the regional tourism product and its development.

Increasing U.S. Tourism

The destination is also focused on increasing U.S. tourism to the Cayman Islands, with the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism (CIDOT) focused on this cause through initiatives including a recent Cayman brunch at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Caribbean Week in New York City.

The event, hosted by model and star of Freeform’s “Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise” Selita Ebanks, featured wellknown local personalities: mixologist and owner of Fusion Mixology, Maya Grant; and musician, Stuart Wilson. The brunch gave attendees – including prominent lifestyle, travel, entertainment, and culinary journalists – a taste of what brunch is like in the “Culinary Capital of the Caribbean.”

A bountiful brunch spread was curated by executive chefs from the Marriott Grand Cayman Resort and Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort and Spa, featuring delicious, classic dishes like yellow curried lobster stew, cilantro and coconut rice, and more exotic delicacies like pulpo aguachile (octopus ceviche).

Guests sipped on rum-based cocktails with locally inspired flavors concocted by Grant, featuring Seven Fathoms Rum from Cayman Spirits Co. while learning about the latest happenings across Grand

Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac via a Q&A session between Ebanks and Director of Tourism Rosa Harris. The event also featured a signature bar sponsored by Cayman Airways where the highlight was a twist on Cayman Airways’ signature in-flight rum punch, a “Jet Set to Cayman Cocktail,” prepared with fresh fruit juices, hibiscus syrup, and other ingredients local to Cayman.

Before departing, the media were gifted “Brunch to Beach” tote bags from Isy B., an award-winning lifestyle and resort brand from the Cayman Islands. Each was filled with goods from Caymanian-owned businesses, such as Ted Green candles, Seven Fathoms Rum from Cayman Spirits Co., Cayman Sea Salt, and a greeting card featuring art prints from the collection of the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands.

“Bringing Caymanians to New York City – a United States cultural hub and critical source market for the Cayman Islands – allows us to present our unique culture, cuisine, and identity to those who help influence consumer travel decisions,” said Harris. “By doing so, we not only highlight the true spirit of the Cayman Islands but inspire a greater appreciation

for what makes the Cayman Islands a truly special place to vacation.”

The Cayman Islands remains steadfast in its mission to increase visitation from the United States and surpass its highest visitation year on record. This event represents just one piece of the Department’s broader marketing strategy. Media events such as these are designed to foster relationships with US-based lifestyle, travel and culinary media increasing national media coverage about the Cayman Islands to pique the interest of and deepen the connection with potential visitors.

Soaring Canadian Arrivals

Additionally, while Grand Cayman welcomed some of the premier players from the Caribbean travel industry for the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC) from September 2-6, it was revealed that it had something else to celebrate: the Canadian market’s record-breaking summer. Canadian stayover visitors increased 58.7% in July 2024 compared to July 2023, marking the best July on record for Canadian arrivals to the Cayman Islands.

“We are delighted to see such a significant increase in Canadian visitors, reflecting our strategic efforts to make the Cayman Islands more accessible to travelers over the summer,” said Raymond Mathias, the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism’s Business Development Manager, Canada.

“The record-breaking arrivals in July affirm the Cayman Islands’ continued appeal as a premier sun and cultural destination. We look forward to building on this momentum for the remainder of the year and beyond.”

Mathias credited the growth, in part, to expanded airlift – with both Air Canada and WestJet service offering up to four flights per week between Toronto and Grand Cayman this past summer.

A Culinary Journey with the Dominican Republic’s ‘Taste the Paradise’ Campaign

The Dominican Republic unveiled its newest tourism initiative, the “Taste the Paradise” campaign, at the prestigious Faena Forum in the heart of Miami. This exclusive event kicked off a global movement aimed at inviting travelers to experience the Dominican Republic not just as a destination, but also as a feast for the senses. With industry leaders, travel influencers, and media representatives in attendance, the campaign set the stage for a deep dive into the country’s culinary and cultural treasures.

A Sensory Exploration

‘Taste the Paradise’ is more than a traditional tourism campaign; it’s a celebration of what makes the Dominican Republic a culinary and cultural gem in the Caribbean. This initiative is an open invitation to explore the country’s rich heritage, from its flavorful dishes to its awe-inspiring natural beauty. Each element of the campaign is designed to engage the senses, offering travelers a taste of the vibrant life that pulses through every corner of the Dominican Republic.

David Collado, Minister of Tourism, captured the essence of the campaign perfectly: “With this campaign, we reaffirm our commitment to present the authentic essence of the Dominican Republic, inviting everyone to experience a destination that stimulates the senses and offers unparalleled experiences with each visit.” His words highlight the unique blend of culinary delights and cultural experiences that await those who venture to this Caribbean paradise.

The True Flavors of the Dominican Republic

At the heart of the “Taste the Paradise” campaign is the idea that the Dominican Republic’s appeal extends far beyond its renowned cuisine. While the country’s traditional dishes, crafted from the freshest local ingredients, are certainly a highlight, the campaign also shines a spotlight on the diverse cultural and natural experiences that make the Dominican Republic a destination like no other.

This campaign paints a vivid picture of a land where every dish, every melody, and every vista tells a story. From the lush mountains and cascading waterfalls to the sun-drenched beaches and lively cities, the Dominican Republic offers a sensory journey that leaves an indelible mark on every visitor. The rhythms of merengue and bachata, the warmth of the Dominican people, and the stunning landscapes all combine to create a rich tapestry that travelers are invited to explore and savor.

A Culinary and Cultural Journey Across Iconic Destinations

The “Taste the Paradise” campaign takes travelers on a culinary and cultural tour through three of the Dominican Republic’s most iconic destinations: Punta Cana, Samaná, and Puerto Plata. Each location, with its distinct character and charm, is showcased in the campaign, highlighting the variety of experiences available to visitors.

Punta Cana: Famous for its breathtaking beaches and luxury resorts, Punta

Cana is the epitome of tropical indulgence. The campaign highlights the Ojos Indígenas Ecological Reserve, where visitors can escape to explore crystal-clear lagoons and lush greenery, offering a serene retreat from the bustling resort life.

Samaná: This stunning peninsula is renowned for its pristine beaches, dramatic cliffs, and rich biodiversity. The campaign invites travelers to Frontón Beach, a secluded spot accessible only by boat or a challenging hike, where the journey to get there is as rewarding as the destination itself.

Puerto Plata: A city steeped in history and culture, Puerto Plata features the picturesque Paseo de Doña Blanca, a street adorned with pastel-colored buildings and vibrant murals. This historic area, highlighted in the campaign, offers a glimpse into the Dominican Republic’s rich cultural heritage.

Calypso Cove: A New Gem in Long Island’s Crown

Over the summer, we had the opportunity to host cruise line visits to Long Island, where a new Bahamian cruise destination, Calypso Cove, is soon to be developed. Each day we visited, the weather was stunning. Such beautiful weather is typical for Long Island, Bahamas. The skies were clear, the temperature warm, and a gentle breeze was blowing. Although our trip was for work, it was impossible not to be captivated by the island’s natural beauty and the warmth of its people.

This brings me to the essence of this article: no matter where you travel or the attractions you visit, the combination of people and natural settings leaves the most lasting impressions. These elements are the sustainable pillars that define a destination and will be our focus as we develop Calypso Cove.

As developers of The Bahamas’ newest multi-branded cruise destination, we feel incredibly fortunate. In my extensive experience with port development across The Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Mexico, it’s rare to find a location that meets all development and guest experience criteria without needing major fixes. Long Island is an exception.

From a maritime perspective, we chose the cruise pier location to ensure safe docking with minimal environmental impact. We were fortunate to modify and finalize the pier’s location while considering these factors.

Our true fortune, however, lies in the island’s people. We met Omar Daley, a long-time resident who established a tour operator business years ago. His passion for Long Island, shared through his stories, convinced us that this enthusiasm will shine in every interaction with cruise guests. Omar’s passion is not unique; many Long Islanders, even those living elsewhere, share a deep love for their home and are eager to tell their own stories.

Long Island’s natural beauty is exceptional. The west-side beaches, which will be part of Calypso Cove, are some of the most stunning I’ve ever seen, featuring a spectrum of blue that is unparalleled. Beyond the beaches, Long Island offers unique experiences: diving into the world’s second-deepest blue hole, visiting

the oldest churches in The Bahamas, and exploring ancient caves once inhabited by the Lucayan Indians over 1,500 years ago. These natural wonders, along with world-class water sports, fishing, and diving, promise to deliver many “bucket list” experiences for our guests.

Calypso Cove will be a comprehensive cruise destination, boosting tourism to Long Island like no other port in The Bahamas or the Caribbean. We believe cruise guests will fall in love with Long

Island just as the locals have. However, we recognize our role as guests of The Bahamas and Long Island and are committed to developing an economic model that nurtures a self-reliant local community, transforming it into a vibrant destination.

We look forward to sharing Long Island’s beauty and culture with the world, creating lasting memories for all who visit Calypso Cove cruise port.

Puerto Rico’s National Drink

Celebrates 70th Anniversary

If you like piña colada, you should know the famous tropical drink was invented in Puerto Rico!

The sweet mix of coconut cream, pineapple juice, white rum, and ice was born in San Juan, but the identity of its creator is still an unresolved controversy on the Island. Three different bartenders claim the invention as their own. The Caribe Hilton Hotel, one of the most famous in San Juan, is the setting for two of the origin stories of the piña colada.

The Caribe Hilton insists that the recipe was crafted by Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, a bartender who worked at the hotel’s Beachcomber Bar and was commissioned to create a signature cocktail back in 1954. Marrero reportedly spent three months crafting this cocktail that, according to many sources, Hollywood legend Joan Crawford declared “was better than slapping Bette Davis in the face.”

On the other hand, Ricardo García — who was another bartender at the Caribe Hilton — alleged he came up with the refreshing recipe that same

year because of a coconut shortage that forced him to improvise.

Ramón Portas Mignot, a cocktailer at Barrachina in Old San Juan, was the third bartender to claim crafting this delicious tropical delight in 1963. There’s even a plaque at the establishment’s entrance commemorating the birthplace of this popular drink.

Some other islanders say that the piña colada dates to the 1800s and credit the fruity cocktail to Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí, saying that he served his crew this beverage to boost morale. While it is not known which hands were the ones that created the famous piña colada, one thing is for sure: it has not only become Puerto Rico’s National drink but a favorite around the world, regardless of where you travel.

So, whether you are lounging at the beach or enjoying the sights and sounds of the lively nightlife, be sure to sip and enjoy the Island’s signature drink and immerse yourself in this little piece of identity.

Jamaica Tourism Stays Hot Jamaica continued its momentum during the quarter despite a brief dip due to Hurricane Beryl. The destination already welcomed 2.5 million total visitors by August – a record for both stopover and cruise guests in that period for Jamaica following a strong third and fourth quarter.

A particularly strong first quarter drove the growth, including a total of 781,081 stayover visitors in the first three months of the year, a 6.4% jump compared to last year. Jamaica was also trending in June, with tickets for international arrivals up 5% in the second half of June, according to analytics firm ForwardKeys.

While Jamaica Tourism Minster Edmund Bartlett called it an “excellent start to this year,” it is also just the beginning of the destination’s broader plan to reach 5 million total visitors by next year –and the destination has other grand plans and initiatives to reach that goal.

Ocho Rios Welcomes New Attraction

Hon. Bartlett welcomed the opening of the Poko Loko floating bar in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, noting that the new attraction has the potential to redefine the tourism landscape in the resort town. The facility, which represents a $1 million investment, spans 6,000 square feet and is designed to offer an unparalleled experience on the water.

“For us, this is what tourism is about. It’s about people wanting new experiences. We are excited about enabling more of these kinds of activities to happen, because it drives more visitors to Jamaica,” he said.

Bartlett noted that the project has already generated employment for 65 Jamaicans, with plans to expand the workforce by an additional 10 employees in the coming weeks.

“The investment in Poko Loko not only enriches the local economy, but also underscores a commitment to community development and sustainable growth,” he added.

Jamaica a Center of Tourism Innovation Additionally, Hon. Bartlett announced on July 30 that Jamaica is positioning itself as a global center of tourism innovation, highlighting the remarkable success of the Tourism Innovation Incubator program. Speaking at the official Meet and Greet Event for Cohort 2 of the Tourism Innovation Incubator at the AC Marriott Hotel, Minister Bartlett underscored the program’s pivotal role in revolutionizing Jamaica’s tourism industry.

Launched by the Tourism Enhancement Fund, a public body of the Ministry of Tourism, in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tourism Innovation Incubator aims to identify and nurture groundbreaking ideas that can transform Jamaica’s tourism sector. This year, the program received an astounding 222 applications, marking a 553% increase from the 34 applications received in its inaugural year in 2022.

“This exponential growth is not merely a statistic; it’s a resounding vote of confidence in the program’s potential and a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that runs deep in the veins of every Jamaican,” Minister Bartlett emphasized.

Aruba Is Booming

Aruba has another sign of its tourism boom, with its airport reporting record passenger traffic in the first half of 2024. It handled 803,287 revenue-generating passengers in the period, an all-time high and 19% increase compared to 2023. The news comes as Aruba prepares for the 2025 debut of its brand-new US departures terminal and efforts to lure more tourism from South America.

That also continues to reap rewards, as this winter will get hotter with a new flight from Brazil. Brazil’s Gol will launch a nonstop flight between São Paulo and Aruba on December 18, which will run three times per week. The flight should lift off Latin American traffic to Aruba,

complementing expansions from carriers including Avianca, which currently operates 15 weekly flights to Aruba, and LATAM, which is poised to expand service from Peru in October.

Aruba will also be ready to check in the new visitors with a host of new rooms coming online, including a new boutique hotel: the Aruba Boutique and Art Hotel. Set in the heart of the popular Palm Beach area, the hotel features 38 rooms, luxurious amenities, and a key location with easy access to the nearby eateries and nightlife, along with other top attractions a short stroll away. It’s part of a growing collection of boutique hotels on the island, especially in the Palm Beach area.

Of course, there’s no shortage of larger (and oceanfront) towers – and a new one will be welcomed by the Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino while it undergoes a $100 million enhancement that includes the addition of a 161-unit oceanfront tower. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2025. The tower, which faces Palm Beach, will include 18 oceanfront suites that are part of seven room and suite categories and operate as an elevated hotel-within-a-hotel experience, with amenities including swimup pools as well as an exclusive adults-only rooftop club. The property is also introducing new dining concepts over the next two years as part of the enhancement project.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines: A Rising Star

St. Vincent and the Grenadines has emerged as a beacon of sustainable travel and natural beauty. This island nation known for its lush landscapes, pristine beaches, and vibrant culture recently achieved a remarkable milestone at the prestigious World Travel Awards Caribbean ceremony, where it was honored with the esteemed title of “Caribbean’s Leading Green Destination,” a testament to its commitment to sustainable practices and conservation efforts. The destination also won the award for “Leading Nature Destination.”

The setting for this momentous occasion itself served as a testament to the rising star status of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, as the event took place at the stunning new Sandals Saint Vincent & The Grenadines, which also took home several awards including “Caribbean’s Leading New Resort.” Plus, the resort complements St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ vision of green tourism. Its opening represents not just a new chapter in luxury hospitality for the nation, but also a reaffirmation of its dedication to offering travelers unparalleled experiences in harmony with nature.

Instead of basking in the glory of its latest accolades, the destination’s focus has shifted towards sustaining this momentum. The country continues to invest in infrastructure that supports eco-friendly tourism, such as renewable energy projects and waste management systems. These initiatives not only enhance visitor experiences, but also safeguard the natural treasures that define the island nation.

Moreover, the recognition at the World Travel Awards serves as an invitation for travelers worldwide to explore St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ pristine shores and vibrant culture responsibly. Whether diving in the crystalline waters or hiking through verdant rainforests, visitors can contribute to the conservation efforts that make the destination a model for sustainable tourism.

Secret Revealed

Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Sustainable Development and Culture, Hon. Carlos James called on over 2,000 travel advisors to share “the Caribbean’s best kept secret” with their clients.

Addressing a sold-out Travel Leaders Network’s International EDGE Conference at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center at National Harbor in Washington, D.C. on June 10, he told:

“St. Vincent and the Grenadines is transforming Caribbean tourism. It has been the region’s best kept secret, until the build out of our international airport which opened in 2017 and new hotels on the island. I am now sharing my island with the rest of the world.”

Noting the rich diversity of the island from its black sand beaches on mainland St. Vincent to the turquoise waters of the grenadines, “St. Vincent and the

Grenadines is a must do destination for North Americans,” he continued. “We are not moving to mass tourism, but we are building out our tourism product in a sustainable way, focusing heavily on environmental sustainability.”

With more flights added from Charlotte, New York, Miami and Toronto to St. Vincent and the Grenadines this winter, the destination is sure to be hot, especially with luxury travelers.

Cartagena Set for New Homeporting Operations

Cartagena is set to welcome new homeporting operations by Royal Caribbean International’s Serenade of the Seas, which will offer a series of seven-night cruises to the Southern Caribbean between October 2025 and April 2026.

“This announcement represents a significant opportunity to continue attracting international travelers to Cartagena, who can begin their adventure aboard one of the company’s cruises directly from our city,” said Carmen Caballero, president of PROCOLOMBIA.

“The fact that such a prestigious company as Royal Caribbean once again chooses Cartagena as a departure port reflects the confidence of the cruise line thanks to the great experience they had in the 2023-24 season, the growth, and the strength of the cruise industry in Colombia.”

In late 2023, Royal Caribbean marked its return to Latin America following an eight-year gap with the Rhapsody of the Seas sailing from Colón and Cartagena.

Along with other developments, the operation rose figures at the port, according to ProColombia. The 2023-24 season ended with a three percent increase in the number of calls, and Cartagena was the most active destination in Colombia with 97 percent of the total cruise passengers.

“The cruise industry in Colombia continues to rise, and the choice of Cartagena

as a departure port for Royal Caribbean is a clear sign of the country’s appeal and potential in this sector,” added Caballero.

Alberto Muñoz, vice president of Royal Caribbean International for Latin America and the Caribbean, highlighted the key factors that led to the choice of the city as a homeport for the Serenade of the Seas

“Cartagena was selected due to its strategic geographical location, its rich history and culture, and its growing popularity as an international tourism destination,” he said. “The city offers convenient access for both Latin American and international travelers, facilitating the integration of attractive itineraries that explore the Caribbean and beyond. Additionally, we had a very positive experience during our last season onboard the Rhapsody of the Seas.”

Bahamian-Owned Group to Lead Environmental Development for Royal Beach Club Paradise Island

Royal Caribbean International has signed on Bahamian-owned SEV Consulting Group, the leading Bahamian-based environmental consulting firm, as part of its commitment to provide local independent environmental monitoring during construction and operation of Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in Nassau, The Bahamas. In partnership with the vacation company, SEV is ensuring the 17-acre beachfront experience – opening in late 2025 – comes to life in line with Royal Caribbean’s environmental commitments as well as Bahamian and international laws and standards.

“Protecting and preserving the natural resources of Paradise Island is a key part of how the beauty and spirit of The Bahamas will shine at Royal Beach Club Paradise Island,” said Philip Simon Jr., president and general manager, Royal Beach Club and Royal Caribbean International Bahamas. “Many structures and invasive species were left behind, and with SEV Consulting Group’s partnership to see through the demolition, construction and operation, the western end of Paradise Island will be a welcome crown in the heart of the harbor once again.”

“We are pleased to work on this project to protect and promote the island’s natural

beauty,” said Stacey Moultrie, Vice President of Environmental Policy and Planning, SEV Consulting Group. “Our job as the environmental monitors is to ensure that the teams for construction and operations implement the measures outlined in the Environmental Management Plan and follow the environmental laws of The Bahamas.”

Royal Caribbean International’s commitment to local hiring, environmental preservation and sustainable development ensures that Royal Beach Club Paradise Island will be a top destination experience that protects and promotes the island’s natural environment and supports the local economy. The first of the Royal Beach Club Collection is taking shape in the coming months, and at the heart of the experience will be The Bahamas. From the location –one of the island’s most idyllic beaches – to the Bahamian food, culture and staff, to a unique public-private partnership in which Bahamians will own up to 49% equity, the all-new beach club combines the beauty and spirit of The Bahamas with signature Royal Caribbean touches across the experience, service and design. What’s in store ranges from pools with swim-up bars to two beaches, private cabanas and island-style spots for casual and local bites.

PortMiami Is Shore Power Ready

PortMiami celebrated the launch of shore power on June 17, with Carnival Conquest being the first ship to plug in at the largest U.S. cruise port. This important milestone was made possible through an industry partnership between Miami-Dade County, Florida Power & Light Company and cruise companies Carnival Corporation & plc, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Royal Caribbean Group and Virgin Voyages.

PortMiami is now the first major cruise port on the U.S. eastern seaboard offering shore power connections at five cruise berths.

Shore power allows cruise ships to turn off their engines and plug into landside electrical power while docked, reducing total emissions by up to 98%, depending on the mix of energy sources. When ships are berthed, they still require electricity for hotel services such as lights, refrigeration, food service, operating equipment and other vessel functions.

PortMiami is one of only 35 cruise ports around the world to offer at least one berth with shore power. This represents approximately 2% of the total number of cruise ports globally.

In the coming year, 21 cruise ships will be outfitted for shore power and connect in Miami. The seaport will have more than 350 vessel calls plugging into the shore power system.

More and more vessels are being outfitted for shore power use. In 2018, 55 cruise ships had this capability. The number has grown to 147 ships today – 23% more than the prior year and 167% more since 2018. By 2028, 239 ships that can connect to onshore power are expected to be in service.

CLIA member ocean cruise lines have made a commitment that all ships

calling at ports capable of providing shoreside power are anticipated to be equipped to either use SSE by 2035 or to be able to use alternative low-carbon technologies, as available, to reduce emissions in port.

The deployment of shoreside electricity infrastructure at a port is a multi-million-dollar investment project. It is essential that shoreside electricity projects, like other public infrastructure development initiatives, benefit from the financial support of national and local authorities in ports where implementation is feasible.

The Latest in Cruise Line Private Island Experiences

Private islands offer the ultimate exclusive experience for cruise guests. That is why cruise companies are continually investing in their island offerings –upgrading amenities, adding new excursion opportunities, raising the bar on island dining, and ensuring that guests of all ages will have an unforgettable time in paradise.

As the first destination exclusively designed for Carnival Cruise Line guests, Celebration Key will welcome visitors in July 2025. Embracing the beauty and culture of Grand Bahama, the exclusive destination will offer five different portals providing a variety of fun, relaxation, and adventure options. The destination will boast the largest freshwater lagoons in the Caribbean, a breathtaking 1.2-mile-long

white sand beach, spaces designed to maximize family fun, an exclusive adults-only area and a variety of food and beverage options. In cooperation with its sister company Holland America Line, Carnival also has plans to expand Half Moon Cay. Plans include an expanded beach, dining and beverage experiences, and a pier that will allow some of its ships to dock when complete in the summer of 2026.

The island features a 2-mile-long crescent beach of white sand surrounding a crystal lagoon. Popular activities include kayaking the lagoon while learning about

the island’s mangroves and rare birds, feeding stingrays at Stingray Cove and horseback riding along the beach. There is also plenty to eat and drink with a full barbecue lunch served buffet style at the food pavilion or fresh grilled lobster at the Lobster Shack. Island beverages can be enjoyed at Captain Morgan on the Rocks or the Bacardi Beach Buggy and Aperol Spritz Tricycle on the beach.

Also on the Carnival Corporation private island portfolio is Princess Cays, Princess Cruises’ exclusive port of call, where guests enjoy a private beach on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, which is 100 miles long and only two miles wide. Princess Cruises’ private resort at Princess Cays is situated on more than 40 acres and features over a half-mile of white-sand shoreline, all at the southern tip of the island. The resort boasts outstanding amenities while carefully preserving this natural paradise. Guests can take in the views from the observation tower, enjoy a complimentary beach barbecue or sip a cool cocktail. There is volleyball and a full range of water sports available. Additional shore excursions include snorkeling, lagoon clear-bottom kayaking adventure, stingray beach encounter and glass bottom boat

Great Stirrup Cay is Norwegian Cruise Line’s resort-style destination and 270-acre private island in the Bahamas, featuring white-sand beaches, crystal-blue waters and a wide array of recreational activities and dining options. The island is home to Silver Cove, an onsite exclusive enclave boasting a variety of luxury daytime villas, private beach access and a brand-new infinity pool. In late 2025, the island will open an expansive pier to accommodate up to two large vessels. Great Stirrup Cay is staffed by Norwegian Cruise Line employees both from the ships and who remain on the island.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve

was founded on a commitment to the restoration of marine resources and ongoing conservation of marine life. Formerly an industrial sand extraction site, MSC restored the area to a pristine 103-acre island within a 64-square mile marine reserve. The island is home to eight beautiful beaches with abundant marine and avian life where guests can engage with nature and enjoy activities like snorkeling, kayaking and paddleboarding. In 2025, a Marine Conservation Center will open, providing an in-depth look at the MSC Foundation’s sustainability efforts including the Super Coral Program, aimed at helping The Bahamas’ coral reefs withstand the effects of climate change. Additional enhancements include a second food hall, larger bars, new shore excursion buildings and an expanded Ocean House bar and restaurant for Yacht Club guests. Dialing up the perfect at one-of-a-kind Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas,

Royal Caribbean International debuted the private island’s first adults-only escape – Hideaway Beach – earlier this year. The exclusive beachfront paradise features experiences exclusive to Hideaway Beach guests including more than an acre of private, white sandy beach complete with resort loungers and umbrellas; private pools, including a swim-up bar; 20 chic cabanas offering a VIP experience; new dedicated spots for drinks and bites, live music and more. With something for everyone – like 13 waterslides at Thrill Waterpark, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean and The Bahamas – and now an adults-only paradise, Royal Caribbean’s upping the ante on vacations designed for every type of vacationer from ship to shore.

In addition to investing in new amenities and activities on their private islands, cruise lines continue to advance their environmental and sustainability priorities to protect these beautiful destinations and their marine surroundings.

Carnival Corporation Helps Alaskan Fisheries Through Local Sourcing & Lights the Way for Solar Energy at Port of Barcelona

As global influences and pricing pressures continue to adversely impact the Alaskan seafood market, Carnival Corporation’s land and sea operations for Holland America Line and Princess Cruises in Alaska have taken a two-pronged approach to help mitigate the downturn’s effects in one of the state’s primary industries.

In Alaska, most of the company’s land-based restaurants, dining venues, and employee menus are stocked with fresh, locally sourced seafood. Varieties of salmon, halibut, Alaska cod, rockfish, scallops, Dungeness crab, Bairdi crab, salmon roe, and oysters are served in 20 locations throughout the state. Holland America and Princess serve more than 230,000 pounds of seafood each summer in hotels and aboard ships.

“We’re committed to sourcing locally, whenever possible, offering our guests the best of Alaska’s seafood,” says Marc Ducharme, the company’s vice president of hotel operations for Alaska and the Yukon. “Prioritizing sustainable fishing is not

just the right thing to do, it’s a key part of our mission to promote Alaska’s amazing seafood offerings. Many of our land-based food and beverage venues have earned Marine Stewardship Council certification for sustainably sourced fish.”

The second part of Carnival Corporation’s effort involves a strong relationship with the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI), the marketing arm for the Alaska seafood industry. AMSI, fresh off a $4-million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has a long-established and extensive collaboration with Holland America/Princess’ land operations in Alaska. The partnership focuses on several key initiatives, including:

• Educating more than 200 employees through Alaska Seafood U, an online ASMI course with various training modules.

• Designing and implementing menus that highlight fresh, locally caught seafood.

• Showcasing wild Alaska seafood videos in guest rooms on Alaska cruise ship itineraries.

“ASMI and Carnival Corporation share a steadfast commitment to sustainability, and we are honored to continue to grow our robust partnership,” said Megan Rider, ASMI’s domestic marketing director. “Their dedication to showcasing Alaska’s wild, abundant seafood aboard their ships is inspiring, and we are thrilled to help showcase this state’s treasures to their guests.”

Guest Options on Land and Sea

Holland America Line, a global cruise leader, is the only cruise line to earn the distinguished Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, the benchmark for serving only fresh, certified sustainable and traceable wild Alaska sea-

food on board all ships sailing the Great Land. All fish served on its six Alaska ships meets this rigorous standard. This includes 42 different Alaska seafood dishes available for dinner in the Dining Room, such as Seared Alaska Rockfish, Roasted Alaska Salmon, and Pan-Fried Dover Sole.

Princess ships sailing in Alaska feature an extensive menu rotation of Alaskan seafood dishes,

including 30 distinctive Alaskan seafood dishes with featured items every night in all main dining rooms. Recipes highlight only the freshest seafood ingredients with multiple varieties of Alaskan salmon, including King, Sockeye and Coho, as well as wild Alaskan cod (caught by hook and line only), halibut, rockfish, Dungeness crabs, wild spot prawns and razor clams.

Ashore, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises offer guests various options to enjoy the freshest local seafood across their extensive land operations in Alaska. Princess has five lodges in the state, each with their unique style and great options for sampling locally sourced seafood and fare with meals at:

• King Salmon Restaurant at Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge featuring salmon served several ways.

• Rod & Reel Restaurant at Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge serving wild Alaskan scallops and fresh halibut.

• Two Rivers Restaurant at Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge highlighting salmon and rockfish dishes.

Holland America Line operates three hotels throughout Alaska, each with restaurants featuring Alaskan seafood, including:

• Marine Stewardship Council-certified Alaskan jig-caught Rockfish, mussels, halibut, and salmon at Canyon Steakhouse and Karsten’s Public House at McKinley Chalet Resort.

• Cedar planked salmon at Chilkoot Dining Room at the Holland America Skagway Inn.

Carnival Corporation Lights the Way for Solar Energy at Port of Barcelona

Additionally, solar panel installations are underway for two of Carnival Corporation’s Port of Barcelona cruise terminals. The roof-mounted solar panels, a first for the port, can supply more than

100% of the energy needed to power daily operations and will reduce overall electricity consumption.

Carnival Corporation and the Port of Barcelona teamed up with a Catalonia-based solar provider to install the 1,350 panels at Palacruceros (Terminal D) and Helix Cruise Center (Terminal E), which will collectively produce 866,000-plus kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year. Work to install the solar panels began in July at Palacruceros and the full project across both terminals is slated for completion by the end of 2024.

Also, the surplus power generated by the solar panels, estimated at 32% for Helix Cruise Center alone, can be routed back into the local energy grid to improve the overall utilization of renewable energy generation in the port. In total, over 245,000 kWh of surplus power will be fed into the grid each year – equivalent to the average annual consumption of 60 households.

This transformative project builds on Carnival Corporation’s development of a new solar panel farm unveiled earlier this year at its Amber Cove Cruise Center in the Dominican Republic, one of eight leading port destinations and exclusive islands owned and operated by the company. Together, these projects mark the beginning of the company’s wider efforts to integrate renewable energy across its entire ports and destinations portfolio.

“The shift to renewable energy is an integral part of our global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize

our environmental footprint at the beautiful destinations we visit,” said Karin Plettner Rutishauser, vice president of global ports and destinations strategy for Carnival Corporation. “By partnering with Port of Barcelona, the solar panels at our terminals will significantly contribute to the production of clean energy, benefiting both the local community and our over one million cruise guests who enjoy this vibrant city each year.”

“Through this latest project with Carnival Corporation, we are laying the foundation for our new energy model based on renewable energy, energy storage and a smart electricity grid,” said Lluís Salvadó, president of Port of Barcelona.

“Sustainability has always been our main driving force and these efforts have proudly put us at the forefront of generating environmental and economic prosperity in our great port, city and region.”

As one of the most important trade ports in the Mediterranean for more than 2,000 years, the Port of Barcelona has long positioned the city as a leader for the future of environmental innovation. This includes being the first cruise port in the Mediterranean with facilities to supply cruise ships with liquefied natural gas and implementing air quality improvement plans to effectively reduce emissions from port activities.

AIDA Cruises Opens Modernized Fleet Operations Center in Hamburg

On September 2, AIDA Cruises officially opened its fully modernized Fleet Operations Center (FOC) in Hamburg. The FOC is part of Carnival Maritime GmbH (CMG), which was established in 2015 as a maritime service unit for AIDA Cruises and Costa Cruises. The embedded FOC, which is available around the clock for cruise ships, plays a central role and serves as the first point of contact and support center.

With this significant investment, the most modern and innovative center of its kind in Germany has been created in the heart of Hamburg’s HafenCity. During the ceremonial event, Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA Cruises, and Keith Dowds, Executive Vice President of CMG, welcomed high-ranking representatives from politics and business, including Dieter Janecek, the Federal Government Coordinator for the Maritime Industry and Tourism in the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, and Dr. Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economy and Innovation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

“Hamburg is one of the most popular cruise destinations in Europe and is also an important hub for the maritime industry. The Fleet Operations Centre is therefore ideally located here in Hamburg,” said Dr. Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economics and Innovation. “The modernization strengthens Hamburg as an international maritime competence center: many players from the cruise and cargo sectors are based in Hamburg and value the expertise as well as the lively and innovative environment that makes Hamburg an attractive international location for specialists. As an important control center, the FOC contributes to making cruises worldwide safer, efficient and sustainable.”

“Our Fleet Operations Center is unique of its kind in Germany. With our extensive investments in new hardware and state-of-the-art software tailored to our specific maritime needs, we are setting

new standards in the cruise industry,” said Eichhorn. “The FOC team is available to our captains and officers around the clock, providing support with nautical and technical aspects. At the same time, this is a clear investment and a strong commitment to Hamburg as an important international maritime competence center.”

In the Hamburg FOC, all relevant data from 31 cruise ships is collected around the clock on over 250 square meters. This includes data from eleven AIDA ships as well as 20 other ships of Carnival Corporation’s European cruise brands. The FOC uses fully digital ship monitoring technology to capture speed, weather, and navigation data, as well as various technical data from the ships’ engine rooms, via satellites in near realtime. This enables the ship crews to better plan and optimize fuel and energy consumption, routes, water management, and various logistics processes in the more than 250 ports worldwide that AIDA Cruises visits with its cruise ships. As a result, fuel consumption and thus the ships’ emissions are significantly reduced. A “Tactical Table,” a kind of digital workbench equipped with software, as well as a modern ship simulator, help to present various scenarios and conduct individual training sessions.

The FOS sees itself as a partner and advisor to the captains and their nautical-technical management teams for all rapidly changing conditions at sea and in ports, 24/7. “The combination of our experienced colleagues and state-of-theart technologies ensures that we provide our ships with the best possible support around the clock. In addition to supporting regular operations, we can also simulate port entries under unusual weather conditions or ensure the most efficient routing,” added Dowds.

Efficiency and Sustainability

The FOC’s state-of-the-art, satellite-based, and near real-time monitoring system collects millions of data points from the

ships daily, which are analyzed using digital algorithms. Based on this data, the course of the voyage can be adjusted if necessary to suit the current conditions in the sailing area and optimized for maximum travel and guest comfort. Digital analysis also allows for the identification of potential CO₂ emission reductions in fuel and energy consumption. Fuel savings from optimal engine operation are just one example of the efficiency gains that can be achieved.

A specially developed software helps to continuously improve environmental management in the interest of protecting sensitive marine ecosystems as effectively as possible. With a global digital environmental sea map installed on all ships, the FOC monitors more than 500 international and national environmental special zones, port regulations, and the company’s own guidelines worldwide. “Compliance with environmental regulations is our top priority. The previous manual approach became increasingly complex and labor-intensive, especially as new regulations were introduced worldwide. With our proprietary software solution, these tasks are automated and optimized, allowing us to effectively address future challenges,” says Eichhorn.

Technical control and analysis, combined with best-practice experiences, offer numerous approaches to developing innovative environmental and resource conservation projects — for example, in freshwater supply, wastewater treatment, and recycling and waste management.

All Data at a Glance

The six-month modernization incorporated the experiences gathered since the first FOC was established by AIDA Cruises in 2012. Based on this, the entire hardware and software technology was upgraded and brought to the latest state of the art, in addition to spatial expansion. A striking feature is the 18-meter-wide and nearly 1.5-meter-high video wall, on which all

relevant information such as weather, planned routes, radar images, protected zones, and current energy consumption can be displayed at the click of a mouse. The FOC team uses software and algorithms to evaluate thousands of sources and millions of data points from the cruise ships daily, analyze weather conditions, and provide recommendations for route optimization. The new “Tactical Table” and “Part Task Simulator” enable digital simulations for upcoming maneuvers or new routes. For example, a port entry in the condition of strong winds can be simulated. The ship simulator has 150 port entries in its program. The cruise ships’ bridge can be added at any time. Live video footage of the actual weather conditions from the ports provides additional perspectives. The open concept design also promotes collaboration between different departments, including technical, nautical, port, guest operations, and environmental teams.

Hamburg’s new HighTech Control Center

sets new standards for the cruise industry

Around the Clock, 365 Days a Year

At four operation desks, an international team of 12 nautically trained superintendents supports the smooth operation of the ships around the clock and 365 days a year. They analyze, support, provide additional information, offer assistance, and organize solutions for changing weather conditions. In this way, new conditions are recognized early, proactively addressed, and decisions made quickly.

To support the captains effectively and professionally on board, all members of the department have extensive nautical expe-

rience and have spent many years at sea themselves. Many of the employees hold a captain’s license and also have certifications for various classes of cruise ships.

Maritime Expertise Bundled in Hamburg

The extensive expansion of the FOC represents a significant investment in Hamburg as a maritime center. Through Carnival Maritime, AIDA Cruises, together with Costa Cruises, has made comprehensive investments in the FOC modernization. In doing so, the cruise line is committing to Hamburg as one of the most important European maritime competence centers for the shipping industry. The investment not only secures and creates jobs but also attracts top international talent to Hamburg. At the same time, it strengthens the local Hamburg economy through close collaboration with partners specializing in maritime technologies and services.

Quintana Roo and FCCA Form New Agreement and Partnership to Invest for Long-Term Benefits

Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) and the State Government of Quintana Roo have enhanced their partnership by signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a Cruise Tourism Welfare Mutual Trust Fund that will improve tourism infrastructure, public security, and disaster readiness in Cozumel and Mahahual (Costa Maya), Quintana Roo, Mexico. Additionally, the State Government of Quintana Roo has become a Strategic Partner of FCCA to further focus on cruise tourism growth and its benefits for the communities.

“We have always prided ourselves in maximizing mutual benefits between destinations and cruise lines, and this agreement is a testament to that while also showing Quintana Roo’s confidence in the cruise industry and maintaining sustainable growth,” said Michele Paige, CEO, FCCA. “I look forward to seeing what this brings for the destinations we visit and, most importantly, the people, in building for a long-term vision.”

“This is a historic day, the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding shows the commitment of my administration to continue to work hand-in-hand with each cruise line and the FCCA to enhance our ports, remain competitive and bring shared prosperity for the people of Quintana Roo” said Mara Lezama, Governor of the State of Quintana Roo. “We are proud of how well the government and the private sector can work together through transparency and accountability.”

The Trust Fund was established based on the joint interest of Quintana Roo destination representatives and FCCA member cruise line executives to invest equally in improving the destination experience to attract more visitors while also building for the future of the communities and their residents. The Trust Fund will be allocated approximately 70% for tourism infrastructure and public security projects, and 30% for prevention and attention to natural disasters and health emergencies.

A Technical Committee will oversee the Trust Fund’s project prioritization, transparency, and operation. The Committee will be comprised of nine total members, including four cruise line representatives; four state government representatives; and a vote of the Governor of the State of Quintana Roo.

Additionally, the State Government of Quintana Roo has become an FCCA Strategic

Partner and a Platinum Member, further strengthening its relationship with the association and its member lines. Through the agreement, FCCA will not only guide the governments in Cozumel and Mahahual on enhancing the destination experience to attract more visitors and cruise calls, but also will help to facilitate new experiences to offer cruise companies and their guests – and will collaborate with the local private sector to maximize any opportunities.

“We appreciate the spirit of partnership the State Government of Quintana Roo has extended to us and the cruise industry,” said Paige. “Through this agreement, FCCA is fully committed to working with the State to fulfill our common goals and help the supporting communities prosper from the economic impact the industry brings.”

Of course, Quintana Roo is no stranger to tourism, standing at the forefront of global tourism with renowned destinations like Cancun and the Riviera Maya drawing international acclaim. This leading position endows the government with a crucial role in ensuring sustainable development and environmental protection.

In addition to focusing on ecological balance, the government is committed to advancing economic growth, education, healthcare, and public safety for its residents. Notably, the state has achieved a historic milestone with the election of its first female governor, representing a groundbreaking shift in its political landscape.

Unleashing the Power of Data: How Data Can Enhance Your Cruise Business

In today’s fiercely competitive global cruise industry, data has become the new gold. Understanding and leveraging data effectively can be the difference between a thriving cruise business and one that struggles to keep up. At Aquila, we recognize the critical role that data plays in driving success, and we are dedicated to using a data-driven approach to empower our clients and stakeholders. Our mission is to help destinations, operators, and service providers make informed decisions that maximize growth opportunities, optimize operations, and elevate guest experiences. The cruise industry has always been about providing exceptional experiences at sea and on land, but the rise of big data and advanced analytics has transformed how these experiences are crafted and delivered. At the heart of Aquila’s strategy is comprehensive data collection and we are confident that you will agree that the collection and analysis of insights from multiple sources lies at the basis of any successful company. By analyzing passenger feedback, we can pinpoint areas where shore experiences can be improved, such as transportation logistics, tour guide knowledge, or gaps between the product design and the actual delivery. Similarly, by examining operational data, one can optimize staffing levels and resource allocation, while measuring sales performance providing crucial insights into market demand and customer preferences. The potential to harness this information is immense.

Informed Decision-Making: Data allows cruise businesses to make well-informed decisions. Maximizing Growth Opportunities: Datadriven insights can reveal untapped market segments and new growth opportunities. By examining demographic data and travel preferences, destinations, tour operators and attractions can tailor their development and marketing efforts to attract specific groups, whether it’s adventure seekers, luxury travelers, or family vacationers. Additionally, understanding economic and social trends can help in designing new cruise experiences and services that meet evolving customer expectations. Aquila uses this approach in our Strategic Destination Assessment sessions, and it allows us to understand challenges, identify trends, uncover hidden opportunities, and present our clients with a roadmap for success through training and development programs.

Optimizing Operations: Data analytics can greatly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of land-based operations,

including port management, attraction coordination, and tour experiences. At attractions and on tours, insights from guest feedback and behavior can be used to tailor experiences, manage crowd control, and improve overall satisfaction. By leveraging data, cruise lines and destination managers can ensure that every aspect of the land experience complements the high standards set at sea, leading to a seamless and memorable journey for travelers.

Elevating Guest Experiences:

Personalizing the guest experience is key to creating memorable cruise experiences. Data enables cruise stakeholders to tailor experiences based on individual preferences and past behaviors. Whether it’s offering personalized excursions, smaller intimate activities, or customized options, leveraging guest data can significantly enhance overall satisfaction and loyalty.
