fundraising activities following the decision of the former FCC Charity Ball to make a change of address to the Hong Kong Rugby Union. It was also the first step towards establishing a programme of community outreach initiatives in support of a raft of causes. “There was a desire to have something not based on so much an individual event, but to develop a longer-term sustainable approach to our role in the community and utilise all the talents that exist at the FCC,” said Tim Huxley, a co-convener on last year’s Charity Committee. “We were particularly keen to focus on areas where people risk falling between the cracks, and geriatric care is one of those — particularly for people who are not native Cantonese speakers, but who are going to be here long term.” The result: a great party and more than HK$200,000 was raised to help replace the home’s existing beds with surgical ones. A template for future events. As was how the committee dealt with the home’s need for occupational therapy: through a member of the committee’s connections, arrangements were made for HK Polytechnic University final year occupational therapy students to take up places with the China Coast Community. The event was put together by a team of volunteers under the guiding hand of Pickering. Or as Huxley put it: “that force of nature Elaine Pickering”. Apparently everyone on the team was very enthusiastic about the cause and the event, supported by FCC staff who were fully behind it.

If so, the FCC Charity Committee would like to hear from you. A key to the development of the FCC’s charity programme is to encourage as many members as possible to get involved in the charities we support, including nominating our chosen charities. “Our focus is on charities that fall under ‘The Three E’s’, namely, elderly care, early learning and educational special needs (any age and can be retraining). While many charities in Hong Kong are high profile and receive substantial funding, we will focus on organisations that sometimes ‘fall between the cracks’ though quietly do great work in the community,” said Charity Committee convener Elaine Pickering. In 2017 the committee focused its fundraising efforts supporting the China Coast Community, “where we have assisted in the purchase of specialised beds, organised physiotherapy for the residents and are organising visits to the Home”. The Charity Committee’s first big fundraising event was the “Hong Kong Remembers: an evening of music, nostalgia and entertainment in aid of the China Coast Community” party in late March. The Club was transformed with three separate buffets and an evening-long entertainment programme running concurrently on all three floors. The evening marked a resumption of active involvement in charity
“To help us select the cause we will support in 2018, we are inviting members and staff to make their suggestions by downloading the FCC Charity Nomination Form* before September 22,” said Pickering. “A panel comprising the Charity Committee and Members of the Board of Governors will choose one of the qualifying charities nominated.” So you can be part of the process of choosing where the Club’s charity efforts should go. If volunteering is your bent there will be many opportunities to get involved. Not least, in getting your companies and organisations you work for or run to donate goods and services, particularly for raffle and silent auction prizes.
