The good old days Former Eastern Express staff share their memories of their exciting and torrid days. Liam Fitzpatrick (then feature writer and columnist): “We were rockstars. We’d work all day, go drinking in Wanchai every night, drop acid on the weekends, and then do it all again and not give a f--k about anything. The Eastern Express is a feeling of being on drugs, thinking that you had the best job in the world, and being the most arrogant bastard in the bar.” Jon Marsh (then managing editor): “It was an amazing experience. When I started as managing editor we had no newsroom, no computer system and no staff. We launched 14 weeks later.” Richard Jones (then photographer): “It was the most fun I have had at any newspaper. The photographers I met there remain some of my best friends. There was no paper on Saturdays so we went a bit gonzo on Friday nights. Taxis left Kowloon Bay racing to Hong Kong Island where the evening inevitably ended up in the Big Apple – glorious.” Mark McCord (then subeditor/columnist): “Of my two stints, the latter in Spring 1996, sticks in my mind because management seemed to have abandoned the paper to the integrity of a team of young, largely inexperienced editorial staff 18
desperate not to make a hash of the first journalistic entry on their CVs. It made for a strained atmosphere.” Vernon Ram (then assistant editor writing leaders/ arts features): “As a seasoned working journalist, I established instant rapport with Express reporters and desk staff. One lifelong friend from Express days is Chip Tsao, the witty columnist. Eastern Express set new standards for three-dimensional photographic coverage under Paul Lakatos now still evident from his pupils at the Post.” Paul Lakatos (then picture editor): “What I remember best was when the designer David Hillman was there to plan the look and feel of the paper. His motto was to lay pictures on the page first then build the columns around it. That gave the newspaper a picture-led feel. With the talent of photographers in our department that then made the newspaper a photographer’s dream.” Peter Wood (then photographer): “Paul Lakatos gave me my first job in Hong Kong as a photographer. I always thought it was an incredible opportunity with a steep learning curve being among some of the best photographers in Asia, and always a thrill to sit on the ferry in the morning watching people read the Eastern Express with your picture proudly displayed across the page. Many of the guys have remained lifelong friends.”
