Perfect Pitch Images by Elaine Liu and Terry Duckham

F

or many years both Elaine Liu and Terry Duckham have been building up rich archives of images featuring Hong Kong’s diverse community of jazz musicians. Elaine, of course, is a musician as well as a photographer, and knows many of her subjects as occasional musical associates, or regular bandmates. Her studies of them reflect insights into their characters and creativity that derive from a shared passion – and from a surreal and humourous cast of mind. Terry is a serious fan of the music and his view is that of photographer as the reporter, capturing the players immersed in the process of spontaneous creation - Elaine included. Each has a unique perspective. Both convey the essence and energy of jazz, and each photographer’s fascination with the people who play it. Their subjects deserve no less.

The tycoon, Mrs Thatcher and the skipping rope Y.K. Pao, bestowed the title of “King of the Sea” by Newsweek , was best known for his extraordinary career in shipping. But he also played a behind-the-scenes – and quirky – role in Hong Kong’s return to Chinese rule, as his understandably proud daughter Anna Pao Sohmen told the FCC. Jonathan Sharp reports.
