The Old Coalfields

Brooklyn House, built in 1890 and originally owned by the Rankin family, was once a social hub for the region. Dame Annabelle Rankin lived there as a child.

BURRUM’S COALFIELDS ARE NO LONGER MINED BUT THE HERITAGE LINGERS IN THE TOWNS OF HOWARD AND TORBANLEA NESTLING ON EITHER SIDE OF THE SALTY REACHES OF THE BURRUM RIVER.

HOWARD AND TORBANLEA

• Step into a nostalgic shopping era still existing at the drapery shop of Van Cooten’s, still a working retail establishment

• The Burrum District Museum has tales and relics of the coal miners who started digging on Queensland’s second coal mine field in 1864. Historic agricultural and mining equipment are on display • Learn the story of Andrew Fisher, who began work at 10 in the coal fields of Scotland and rose to be three term Prime Minister of Australia. View the house he lived in as a young immigrant miner

• Hear amusing tales of the robust mining past at Howard’s Grand Hotel, built in 1888. Photographs and memorabilia capture a colourful past
