Events Life is eventful on the Fraser Coast with a jam-packed calendar of festivities! For a complete list of what is upcoming head to frasercoastevents.com and we’ve selected just a few of our favourites below…

WORLD’S GREATEST PUBFEST – APRIL 30 Honouring the quintessential Australian tradition of a good old fashioned bar hop, this event is a favourite for young and old alike! Friends and strangers chat, laugh, dance and party away the afternoon in outlandish costumes. A different charity is supported each year, and a lot of fun is on offer!

RELISH FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL – JUNE 3 Maryborough’s heritage streetscapes and stunning riverside parklands serve as the perfect backdrop to savour the moment at this showcase of regional wines and fine local produce. Live cooking demonstrations from quality local chefs, as well as beer and wine tasting sessions are part of a tantalising program. Live entertainment creates an incredible atmosphere around Maryborough’s Portside area, which dates back to being a significant port of entry for early European migration to Australia.

MARY POPPINS FESTIVAL – JUNE 23 TO JULY 2 Celebrate the art of storytelling and discover the magic and history of Maryborough during the annual two week Mary Poppins Festival. Find art of all kinds exploding through the streets of Maryborough – and enjoy practically perfect experiences to surprise! The region’s local connection to author PL Travers is highlighted at the Mary Poppins Day in the Park (Saturday, July 1st), where heritage streetscapes turn into the scenes of Cherry Tree Lane, with nanny races, chimney sweep challenges and grand parades to boot!

6

HERVEY BAY OCEAN FESTIVAL – AUGUST 11 TO 20 The Hervey Bay Ocean Festival is a celebration of everything that makes Hervey Bay special. It’s an eclectic group of events that promotes the conservation of the marine environment and animals that are unique and important to our region. Some of the highlights include: Blessing of the Fleet – August 12 Hervey Bay Seafood Festival – August 13 Whale Festival Parade and Concert – August 19 Paddle Out for Whales – August 20

MARYBOROUGH OPEN HOUSE AND GARDEN – SEPTEMBER 23 & 24 Maryborough was settled in 1847 and remains largely untouched from its days as a thriving river port, and one of Australia’s largest and busiest destinations for immigrants in the mid 1800s. Queensland’s heritage city opens its doors in September to uncover the architectural magic in some of its oldest and most interesting buildings. Take in the architectural delights, striking public art celebrating a rich heritage and charming museums and antique stores filled with treasures of a bygone era.

AUSTRALIAN OFFSHORE SUPERBOAT CHAMPIONSHIPS – OCTOBER 28 & 29 The F1’s of the open water roar to life on the calm waters in front of Hervey Bay. There’s plenty of ways to enjoy the spectacle with viewing points along the town’s beautiful esplanade, a fleet of luxury catamarans taking spectators out on the water, viewing access to the boats at the Marina and a boat parade through the streets on the Saturday! Sunday means race day – see the speed live!

HERVEY BAY 100 – NOVEMBER 19 Suffer in paradise and show us you have what it takes to complete the 2km swim, 80km bike ride and 18km run at the Hogs Breath Hervey Bay 100. Fraser Island You’ll never forget the wanderlust you felt when you discovered the ancient rainforests, crystal clear freshwater lakes and a beach that doubles as a runway and a registered highway. Fraser Island has the most incredible natural experiences that one island can offer – one minute you’ll be walking beside a crystal clear freshwater stream; the next, overlooking a huge sand blow or exploring towering subtropical rainforest; then, you’ll be driving a beach highway that doubles as an airstrip and comes with its very own shipwreck to explore. Even the most experienced traveller will be inspired by the world’s largest sand island. Lying just south of the Great Barrier Reef and off the coast from Hervey Bay, Fraser Island stretches for 123kms. It is the only place on earth where you can stand dwarfed by ancient rainforests which defy the laws of nature to grow to soaring heights out of nothing more than sand. The island has been built up over 800,000 years of tidal action

– the world’s largest and oldest dune building sequence. The sands of Fraser Island provide the base for an incredible landscape of stunning freshwater lakes including pristine Lake McKenzie and spectacular Lake Wabby. Nature is alive with over 325 bird species plus wallabies, possums, turtles, flying foxes, echidnas and the famous Fraser Island dingo. Visit Indian Head and Waddy Point to see whales playing in the ocean on the horizon, and turtles, dolphins, manta rays, and dugongs in the waves below. There are many ways to experience the island’s exceptional landscapes – take a self-drive getaway; join a guided tour; go on a camping safari or explore the island by foot on the Fraser Island Great Walk.

WHALE WATCHING

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS When it comes to awe-inspiring, up close interactions with humpback whales, there’s no place like Hervey Bay. The stunning intimacy of these gentle giants will truly take your breath away, leaving you with amazing memories and even better pictures. Twenty years of research has confirmed that the Fraser Coast is the only genuine stopover along the migration route where up to 10,000 whales deviate from their annual journey back to Antarctica. Unlike whale watching in the open ocean, where the whales simply pass by en route north or south, the whales stay for up to 10 days in Hervey Bay, using the time to rest, play and socialise. You can be certain that your whale watching experience in Hervey Bay is like nowhere else on the planet. Boats offering decks with 360 degree views, underwater viewing rooms, hydrophones to listen to the whales and underwater cameras on the whale tour vessels are all available to ensure incredible, interactive encounters. Those who choose to immerse themselves into the whales’ world can be submerged in boom nets, tethered to a mermaid line or lowered on special platforms in the water allowing the whales to freely approach within arm’s reach. Hervey Bay is the only place where these spine-tingling, jaw-dropping, heartstirring encounters are guaranteed, so start planning your adventure now.

The iconic Urangan Pier, which stretches for almost a kilometre out to sea, is one of Australia’s oldest and longest piers. Maryborough Maryborough tells the tales of a captivating colonial past. Stories of loss, triumph and spirit spread throughout the town in its heritage buildings, striking public art, statues and memorials. Two bronze statues illustrate the contrasts of Maryborough’s turbulent and enchanting colonial past.

Victory, that it was temporarily displayed in Sydney on its journey from Italy in 1922.

The image of Duncan Chapman, the first Anzac ashore at Gallipoli, symbolises the tough military and industrial roles of a city built with fierce passion that often strayed into brutal, bizarre, risque and haunting realms.

Beside it is a poignant life-size statue of Chippie IV, the last of a line of Royal Kennels terriers that were the constant companions of Maryborough’s Rev. Tubby Clayton, founder of Toc H (Talbot House). Rev. Clayton, chaplain to four British sovereigns, set up the first respite centre in war-torn France for soldiers on leave from the trenches.

A short stroll through heritage-listed Queens Park leads to Cherry Tree Lane and a statue of Mary Poppins perched beside the 135-year-old bank building where her creator, Pamela Lyndon Travers, was born in 1889. The world’s most famous nanny typifies the heritage charm and creative talents that rock the cradle of modern life in Maryborough. Bubbling through the community is the spirit that rose from a bawdy river port to create a wealthy 19th Century business centre and a powerful 20th Century city of industrial ingenuity. Crammed with intriguing tales and people who love to tell them, Maryborough is friendly, quirky and an architectural gem of Australia’s colonial era.

In the historic Wharf Street precinct is Australia’s finest military museum outside of Canberra. Across the street a tippler tells tales of tasting the liquor content of kegs at the old Bond Store; the Customs House museum faces the street where 22,000 immigrants trudged from berthed sailing ships, taking their first steps on the new land they would call home.

A story trail with animated yarns and bronze statuettes winds through city streets that are lit into night displays where an image of Mary Poppins floats over rooftops.

Their lives are chronicled at the Maryborough Family Heritage Centre, with help upstairs for your own family history searches. Past atmosphere-soaked shops and hotels is a fountain dedicated to heroic nurses who sacrificed their lives to care for dying children, saving Australia from being ravaged by the Black Death pneumonia plague.

The statue of Maryborough’s Lt Chapman is the catalyst for a developing military trail around the city and the region. Sculptured cliffs of Gallipoli will soon rise in the park in front of the soldier, leading to a Western Front memorial walk and a graceful Carrera marble cenotaph that pays rare tribute to the WWI nurses. So striking is the monument, topped by Winged

Soak up history

The glorious colonial architecture of the Customs House and Residence honours the once significant influence of Her Majesty’s Customs Service on the city of Maryborough. Step inside and hear the stories of immigrants who came from afar and uncover the inspirational history of the families who pioneered this important Queensland settlement. While you are here, overlook the river and enjoy a meal at the Muddy Waters Café. Facebook.com/OurFraserCoast www.ourfrasercoast.com.au

34

Guns in the park overlooking the majestic Mary River hold stories of the naval brigades formed hastily in the 1880s to counter the Russian fleet. Nearby is a monument to ships built in Maryborough 60 years later to sail into the World War II fray.

An old shop has been frozen in time and a bell tower holds nine rare bells that ring out for the love of Maria Aldridge. And that’s another story.

Maryborough Customs House was built in 1900 and was the second Customs House built in the busy port city. It remained operating until 1988 and is now an interpretive centre.

Hinterland Adventures Discover wonderful bushland, quaint towns, hotels from bygone eras and even the ancestral home of the macadamia nut. Have an adventure on the Fraser Coast. The mighty Mary River defines the southern hinterland and provides the ideal spot for picnics, camping, fishing and canoeing. Settled in 1867, Tiaro is the perfect place to stock up on local knowledge and is the head of the hinterland. A trip to Tiaro would not be complete without sampling old fashioned pub fare at one of its two historic hotels, built in the late 1800s. Stop in at nearby Bauple, and savour the rare experience of eating macadamia nuts near where they were first discovered by local Butchulla people an estimated 30,000 years ago. The mountain and its surrounds were a sacred place while the nuts – called bopple nuts – were used for food, trade and gifts.

The small village of Bauple is nestled into the foothills of the mountain and its wonderful museum offers the opportunity to delve into the origins of the nut and learn about the history of the whole hinterland. Free overnight camping is allowed for self-contained caravans and RVs at Bauple, Rossendale Park, Petrie Park and in the heart of Tiaro. The quaint, former rail sidings of Gundiah and Theebine are both home to grand old hotels. Stop for a picnic at historic Munna Creek, or head to Miva to find the picturesque Dickabram Bridge. Glenwood Park south of Bauple, is another great picnic spot and is home to a variety of wildlife including kangaroos and wallabies.

Did you know? the home Mount Bauple is t’ now of the ‘bopple nu ed to as the commonly referr macadamia nut.

Fishing Three of Australia’s most iconic sports fishing species – black marlin, golden trevally and barramundi – can all be found on the Fraser Coast. Protection from prevailing winds and one of Australia’s largest seagrass beds acts as a nursery and feeding ground for a remarkable range of marine species. No wonder the Fraser Coast is known as Australia’s home of fishing. The Fraser Coast is where the warm northern currents and the cool southern currents meet, providing a one-stop location for an incredible variety of angling fish, all able to be caught in one location. Marlin, sailfish, barramundi, bass, long tail tuna and the golden trevally are just some of the iconic sport fish species that live within the Fraser Coast. Fish offshore, on the beach, in the Mary River or in the maze of estuaries that form part of the stunning Great Sandy Marine Park. The choice of fishing is impressive, with some of the best sport and game, sheltered beach and deep sea fishing to be found in Australia. But don’t just take our word for how great the fishing is. Grab your fishing gear and find out for yourself. A word of warning though – you’ll be hooked!
