The Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum – a premium Military Trail experience Founded in 2005 and supported by more than 100 volunteers, the Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum is one of Australia’s most important commemorative assets, recognising the enduring legacy of the service and sacrifice of personnel who have fought in the defence of Australia’s national interests in all wars. The museum has more than 10,000 items of military and colonial memorabilia in displays of exceptional quality. It specialises in the Gallipoli campaign, which led to the birth of the Anzac legend, as well as the Battle of Long Tan during the Vietnam War. Of the 370 Australian Imperial Force officer casualties and 137 New Zealanders from the Gallipoli campaign, the Maryborough museum represents 71 of these officers, mostly Australian, who died as a result of service on the peninsula. Also, the museum represents 134 soldiers and nurses for gallantry at Gallipoli. The representation is primarily with each service personnel’s original medals. Nowhere else in the world is there such a collection.

In addition, the museum houses thousands of items of significance from all wars, right up to the Afghanistan conflict, with a focus on representing the people who served (sailor/soldier/airman and nurse) rather than the machinery of war, the campaigns or battles. The museum is being visited by an increasing number of school groups from throughout Queensland, recognising it as a rare and valuable resource for school students in their study of history. • The museum is open Monday to Friday 9.30am to 3.30pm and between 9.30am and 12.30pm on Saturday and Sunday. • Museum volunteers also provide guided tours of the ‘Walk with the Anzacs’ Gallipoli to Armistice Memorial. • To book a guided tour of the ‘Walk with the Anzacs’ Memorial or the Military Museum, please call 07 4123 5900.
