IT’S TIME TO GET SET, TO GET W.E.T

The Get Set to Get W.E.T. (Water Education Training) is a Fairfax County Park Authority developed water safety program that is designed for children ages 3-5 years old. With drowning being the leading cause of death for this age group, it is paramount that preschool age children receive training and education in the dangers of unsupervised water play, the benefits of learning to swim, and the fun that goes along with being in the water. “In the Get Set, Get W.E.T. program, we read stories about water safety to the children, teach them about being safe around water, and show them life jackets, rescue tubes, and other safety materials such as coloring sheets” said lead instructor, Debbie Kidwell. She went on to say, “In the Spring of 2022, we did over 84 presentations to over 2,000 preschool children in Fairfax County.” The free 30-minute presentation consists of an age-appropriate book, interactive games, and proper fitting of a lifejacket and is taught by certified swim instructors and lifeguards. “With the proximity of so many Fairfax County residents to open water, the Aquatics team with FCPA felt it was vital to do more than just provide swim lessons at the Rec Centers. Get Set, Get W.E.T. allows us that opportunity to provide an interactive learning environment where it is needed most to meet our goal of zero drownings in Fairfax County” said Elizabeth Cook, Aquatics Director at Cub Run Rec Center.
