Welcome Message from the Minister for Tourism & Major Events
Welcome Message from the Fraser Coast Regional Council Mayor
It is my great pleasure to welcome
Welcome to the Ocean Festival.
you to Hervey Bay Ocean Festival, one
Fraser Coast residents have an affinity for the ocean and every day, no matter the weather, you will find people out enjoying themselves on the ocean sailing, fishing, swimming or just walking and relaxing on the beach.
of Queensland’s many great event experiences here on the Fraser Coast. Events like the Ocean Festival are vital to Queensland’s tourism prosperity, engaging visitors with the locals and the community, and creating memorable experiences. The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program, which helps drive visitors to the destination, increase expenditure, support jobs and foster community pride. There is a story to tell in every Queensland event and I hope these stories inspire you to experience more of what this great State has to offer. Congratulations to the event organisers and all those involved in delivering the festival and I encourage you to take some time to explore the diverse visitor experiences on the Fraser Coast. The Hon Kate Jones mp
It is also the base for two of our major regional industries – whale watching and commercial fishing. There is so much to do that we’ve spread the events over two weekends. Each event is unique and celebrates a particular aspect of our lives and our connection with the ocean. The Hervey Bay Seafood Festival celebrates our world famous seafood, straight from our pristine natural environment. The whale parade and concert celebrates our unique link to the humpback whales. Every year a growing number of mother humpbacks bring their new-born calves into the bay to rest on their long journey home to Antarctica. The parade of illuminated floats along the Esplanade represents their journey. The Paddle Out for Whales celebrates our efforts to protect the marine environment – not just humpback whales which were hunted nearly to extinction. And the Kite Karnival is just fun, something we all have when playing in or around the ocean. Congratulations to all of the people involved in some way to bring these events together. Your tireless efforts do not go unrecognised. I will remember your efforts as I, and everyone else, is having fun throughout the festival.

Mark Furner
Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Welcome to the Hervey Bay Seafood Festival – where the prawns are plump, the fish is fresh, and the scallops are scrumptious. The pristine waters of the Fraser Coast and greater Wide Bay area are known for producing some of the best wild caught seafood in the world.
Today it is my pleasure to be opening the festival and welcoming seafood lovers to this beautiful part of Queensland.
Hervey Bay is one of Queensland’s major seafood hubs with a vibrant commercial fishing and onshore seafood processing industry.
I am also extremely pleased to be launching another ground-breaking initiative of the Hervey Bay seafood industry.
It supplies fine quality fish, prawns, crustaceans and the iconic Hervey Bay scallops to leading restaurants and a network of retail outlets.
The Wide Bay Wild Catch regional seafood brand is an exciting new concept which highlights the exceptional story of local seafood here.
This means seafood lovers near and far can enjoy top quality Queensland wild caught seafood.
While this festival is not only a showcase of the magnificent local product, I am also looking forward to talking to the local fishermen and seafood consumers and taking in the attractions of the day, and I would urge you to do the same.
I’d like to congratulate the organisers of the 2018 Hervey Bay Seafood Festival for this initiative that began 20 years ago. Their aims to create awareness of the economic and social

roles of the seafood industry in the coastal Queensland are to be admired. It has become an iconic event on the foodie tourism calendar and a place where the industry gathers every year.
Thank you to everyone who has made this festival such a success.
