SKETCH OF SYNAGOGUE IN THE CENTRE OF AMSTERDAM
MOKUM WHILE TRAVELLING TO WORK IN AMSTERDAM I WALKED PAST TWO MEN DRESSED IN TRADITIONAL HASIDIC JEWISH CLOTHING. I WAS IMMEDIATELY DRAWN TO THE BOLD STRIPES AND SILHOUETTE AND KNEW I WANTED TO EXPLORE THIS FURTHER THROUGHOUT MY SKETCHBOOK SO I DID SOME RESEARCH TO FIND OUT WHAT THE HISTORY OF JEWISH CULTURE WAS IN AMSTERDAM . AS IT TURNS OUT THE CITY WAS A REFUGE FOR JEWISH PEOPLE FLEEING WAR OR OPRESSION IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES. THE COUNTRY HAD ONE OF THE LARGEST JEWISH COMMUNITIES IN THE WORLD AT THE TIME. UNFORTUNATELY SINCE THE SECOND WORLD WAR THE JEWISH POPULATION IN AMSTERDAM WENT FROM 80,000 TO 15,000. BUT THE STRONG IMPACT OF THE JEWISH CULTURE IS STILL SEEN TODAY IN THE CITIES ARCHITECTURE AND EVEN THE DUTCH SLANG WORDS USED WHICH WERE ACTUALLY ORIGINALLY YIDDISH

WHILE IN AMSTERDAM I DECIDED TO VISIT BERLIN TO VISIT THE JEWISH HISTORY MUSEUM AND SEE THE BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE DESIGNED BY DANIEL LIBESKIND AND BUILT FROM 1993-1999
THE IMPRESSIVE ARCHITECTURE HAD A SENSE OF OPRESSION AND A SADDNESS WITH THE LOOMING LONG CORRIDORS LEADING INTO DARKNESS AND AGGRESSIVE LOOKING SLASHES ON THE OUTSIDE & INSIDE OF THE BUILDING - WITH THIS HOWEVER THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO LOOK AT HIS WORK. FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING THE LINES LOOK AGGRESSIVE AND IMPOSING BUT ONCE INSIDE THEY WERE WINDOWS , SHINING STRIPS OF BRIGHT LIGHT WHICH FELT LIKE GLINTS OF HOPE AGAINST THE COLD INDUSTRIAL WALLS. I AM GLAD I MADE THIS TRIP. IT HAS NOT ONLY GIVEN ME INSPIRATION BUT IT WAS ALSO A VERY EMOTIONAL TRIP THAT GAVE ME A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE HISTORY OF JEWISH CULTURE

i recieved this really beautiful book as a gift from the creative director at calvin klein and i found it so inspirational. i loved the mythical stories associated with these traditional concepts. the more i read through this book and looked at the beautiful photography the more i was inspired, i see so many exciting idea’s not only with clothing but also bags , some really beautiful shapes i feel would make beautiful bags. i would really like to do some quick inspiration inspired by this as i feel they would fit with the clothing designs i have done.
