MEGAN JONES - W14002233 ZEITGEIST SKETCHBOOK DE0064

I visited a slate mine in Wales and noticed a really interesting piece of slate which almost looked marbled from all of the different cracks and lines on it. I did a quick sketch of this using charcoal which I think really worked well with how expressive the different lines are.

I also painted a section of the marble in watercolour which has a much more delicate effect than the previous drawing in charcoal. I then scanned this into photoshop to create various prints which I think have worked really well.

I loved the tall ceilings and the various patterns of stone leading up to it in a castle in Wales. While I was there I did a quick drawing to try and capture the real beauty of the place. I wondered how else I could try and replicate the beautiful details in each room and thought of fabric manipulation - this is all very delicate which therefore perfectly represented the amazingly crafted architecture.

At the castle entrance there was the most beautiful iron door knocker. I decided to do a detailed pencil drawing to show the. I then drew the various vector shapes of the knocker on illustrator to create various different prints which I think have been really succesful.

I visited Nottingham for my brothers graduation and when walking to the campus found this really interesting wire sculpture. I’m not to sure what the shape is meant to represent however thought it could be good for a silhouette. Therefore I have cut up various images of the scuplture using the technique of juxtapositioning have tried to create new garment shapes. I think the silhouette I have created looks very oversized which I love.

I found a really interesting coloured leaf in my garden. I love the purple edges and the white dots covering the leaf and how they are quite battered. I tried to draw this in pencil when I was in the garden and think I have managed to show the ageing of the leaf quite well. I then duplicated this on photoshop to create a print which I think has been really succesful. I think I should try and play around with different repeat patterns with this leaf.

I really wanted to try and improve my illustrating while being away at uni this year. Therefore I found an image of a model and drew it in pencil and pen. I then scanned this into photoshop and experimenting with painting it and various filters. I think this has worked well especially the painted ones and now I could add this onto the body of an illustration

When visiting London I saw these really quirky lights in a restaurant. They were various different coloured cups which created the most beautiful colours. I have tried to recreate something similar with watercolour and think I could take the colours from the image and painting and use them for a Spring/ Summer colour palette. I also drew out the lights in fine liner as well, which I then scanned into photoshop to create a repeat print. I love this print and think it would look quite interesting if I were to then embroider this.

In my garden I found this beautiful flower/plant. I love the struture of the leaves but then the contrast with the delicacy of the flower. I drew this using fine liner and feel like I captured contrasting bold lines with little flower buds. I then scanned this into photoshop and duplicated it, then experimented with scale and quantity to create various different prints, these are my favourite I have created so far this year.

I love the military/explorer style to the SS17 Louis Vuitton menswear collection. The tribal prints and military camel overshirts have made up a great collection. I particularly loved the colour palette they have used this season and think it really captures a real African Safari summer trip.

In the British Museum in London there was the most incredible ceiling. It was continuing rows of triangles following the whole building around creating the most beautiful pattern. I drew this in Charcoal and then a continuous line drawing in biro pen. I then scsled up the continuous line drawing which I absolutely love and want to try and explore this further for my next project.

In Kings Cross station there was also a very similar ceiling to the British Museum. I again drew it in fine liner and photoshopped and duplicated. This ceiling had a lot of curves in it which has created some really interesting shapes. I think it is very similar to Christopher Kane’s SS14 collection.

One of the SS17 collections I really loved was by Marni. I was really attracted to the floral prints which almost looked like microbes under a telescope, as well as the tab detail over the shirts and jackets, giving the garments a unique edge to them.

In Wales I went for a walk around an old village which had a little pier. I loved this chain I found attached to wall, obviously it was quite old which you could see from the layers of rust built up on it. I drew this in fine liner and pencil to try and show the different textures of the rust and think this has worked quite well.

Over my time on placement I have collected various fabrics this ranges from various different jerseys, knits, nylons, cotton, wax and wool. I thought it would be important to keep a record of all of these fabrics therefore have taken little swatches of each and attached them onto these tags, I have then written on the back details of what the fabric is, the colour code and fabric composition and weight which will be massive help for future reference.

In Wales I visited an independant art gallery in which I came across a sculpture with the most beautiful textures. I drew this in pencil and noticed all of the different lines on it, I then traced over this to start and create a pattern on photoshop. I felt I could make something similar to the Martin Across Fall 15 collection, which is all based on direction of line creating a mountainous effect.

I’ve drawn up some garment details of an overdyed casual jacket which was in the studio of where I have been interning. The jacket had so many details such as darts across the back and sleeves, herringbone tape, concealed stud fastenings to pockets and button adjuster to the cuff. I think these drawings show all of the various different details really well.

I visited the British Museum when in London and one of the exhibitions on was Maggi Hamblings “Touch - Works on paper. I loved how expressive this work is. I think most of the art had \ been drawn in either charcoal or painted in watercolour. I tried to replicate one of the drawings using chalk and charcoal, I drew it quite freely and think have managed to capture the style of Maggi Hambling.

When I visited London I noticed so much street art, nearly on every street corner. I found this quite interesting, with so many different colours, lines and shapes all having some true meaning behind them. I have interpreted one piece of the grafitti with a quick drawing on photoshop which I think looks quite cool. Tim Coopen’s Fall 13 collection featured grafitti prints which is something I could explore.

I really loved this jacket at work, I took this photo of it when styling some product for season launch and thought it would be perfect to draw. I love the focus on the pockets of this jacket, they are quite oversized and are bellowed meaning they are more prominent on the jacket.
