Concept I am interested in the idea of turning back time, being able to start over from scratch and feel that an hourglass is a great representation of this. An hourglass can be turned over, and over the course of one hour the sand will fall from the top to the bottom. In order to get that time back again, you simply flip the hourglass over gain and the hour starts all over. I love this idea, and wanted to incorporate it into clothing somehow. I began to look at items of favourite clothing, and tried to think of ways of making them new again after years of wear, giving them their time over again, a new start, a fresh chance to start from scratch and be something new and loved all over again.

Recycling – Is it worthwhile? Recycling is one of the best environmental success stories of the late twentieth century. Recycling, which includes composting, diverted over 72 million tons of material away from landfills & incinerators in 2003, up from 34 million tons in 1990 – doubling in just 10 years. Recycling turns material which would otherwise become waste into valuable resources Recycling: ü Reduces the need for landfill & incineration ü Saves energy & prevents pollution caused by the extraction and processing of virgin materials & the manufacture of products using virgin materials ü Decreases emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change ü Conserves natural resources such as timber, water & minerals ü Helps sustain the environment for future generations SOURCE: United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/muncpl/faq.htm

Recycled Fashion – Success Stories Via a network of textile-recycling banks around the UK, TRAID collects unwanted clothing & diverts it from the waste stream into reuse & recycling. Of the 3,000 tonnes of clothing & shoes collected annually, a massive 94% is repurposed. A fashionable second-hand retail experience has been developed through the TRAIDremade initiative. At a workshop in Brighton, young designers are given free rein to customise, cut up, redesign & embellish hand-picked items into fashionable items, appealing to on-trend consumers who are looking for something highly individual. TRAID reports donations of £2.2 million, funding development projects throughout the world with partners such as Oxfam, War on Want & Fairtrade Foundation.

Recycled Fashion – Success Stories Launched in 1997, Orsola de Castro’s label From Somewhere became a magpie within a hugely wasteful fashion industry, gathering its discarded treasures instead of using new textile products. From Somewhere diverts 3-4 tonnes of textile waste each season. Clothes are made in relatively small quantities, perhaps only 1,000-1,500 pieces annually. Production is situated in Italy & the UK, so that it’s as close as possible to the source of the materials. Each piece is unique, size is not always predictable, and dresses are sold by colourway rather than exact shade. In 2006 de Castro & her partner Filippo Ricci were instrumental in founding Esthetica, the ethical fashion section of London Fashion Week. Esthetica has raised awareness of environmental & ethical issues in the fashion system, & promotes emerging sustainable fashion companies. From Somewhere has collaborated with supermarket giant Tesco, and swimwear company Speedo.
