GUIDE TO BLEACHING GARMENTS

1. Choose your clothing. stencils can be used to bleach t-shirts, sweatshirts and more. Darker items will show best results. Start by inserting a cardboard box inside the clothing item. This flattens the area you want to stencil and also prevents the bleach from going through to the next layer. The shirt or clothing item should NOT be too stretched over the cardboard, it should just fit. If you overstretch your fabric, your design will get distorted. 2. Carefully position your stencil on the clothing item where you would like it to appear. Next, tape down two or three sides of the stencil with masking tape to hold your stencil in place. 4. Squeeze a few ounces of bleach paste out of the pen onto a plate or bowl. 5. Dip the foam brush in the bleach and dab it onto the clothing in the open areas of the stencil, starting with your larger areas. Try not to get any paste under the stencil for a clearer design. Apply to all areas of the design evenly. 6. You may start to see the bleach lifting the colour out of the shirt immediately. You can leave the paste on for 5 minutes or 4 hours, depending on the effect you are seeking. The longer you leave the bleach on, the more it will lift out the original colour of the clothing so results will vary. Too long will result in the bleach eating holes in the shirt. 7. Once you are satisfied with the bleaching level, rinse the garment in water and then plunge it into a bath of Anti-Chlor, Bleach Stop, or another bleach neutralizer. It’s best to have this bath prepared and ready. Then launder the garment as usual. 8. Clean up. 1. If you do not wish to stencil and desire a tie dye effect with the bleach simply tie dye guide using bleach instead of food colouring.

As i have said i wanted to use performance materials as they are durable , breathable, waterproof etc. But customising performance fabrics can be tricky but of course it can be done , some like merino wool and cotton are very easy to work with but others like polyester become a lot more work. Bleaching polyester can be a bad idea as it will simply make the fabric fibres weaker and therefore make them vulnerable to breakage , not ok when you are trying to make your garment last as long as possible. I have found the safest and most effective DIY methods. of course if my plan were to become a reality then I would find the best DIY methods worldwide and produce a guide for people to refer to and experiment with. There is potentially a massive business model that would follow the huge campaign of converting the masses. The problem is pleasing everyone, the general public are easy to convince but it's the people that run the world that are notoriously hard to crack they own banks, resource companies and the organisations that humanity has become reliant on and unless things are being done in a way where they stay at the top they will pour resources into preventing their failiure.

How waterproof a garment is needed Clothing rated between 5,000 mm and 10,000 mm is a good choice for people who spend long days out and ski or snowboard in any weather conditions. Avid snowsport enthusiasts, especially those in wetter climates, should look for waterproof ratings in the 10,000 mm to 20,000 mm range or b etter. If you spend a good percentage of your time in the backcountry or hiking or skinning to remote locations, breathability becomes equa lly as important as waterproofing – look for outerwear with both waterproofing and breathability in the 20,000 plus range. As you might expect, high er ratings in both categories will usually mean higher prices. Remember that while a 20,000 mm rating may sound impressive, a hard day of riding in wet conditions with the added pressure of wind, sitting, and falling puts even the most waterproof fabrics to the test. How are waterproof ratings determined? Waterproof ratings are determined by the clothing manufacturer or fabric producer, with testing done either by independent la boratories or in-house. There are a number of different testing protocols in use, but most involve the equivalent of placing a 1” x 1” square tube ov er the fabric and determining how high (in millimeters) a column of water you can suspend over it before it starts to leak. Some manufacturers have developed their own testing methods that involve adding pressure to the process to simulate the effects of wind. While waterproof ratings are becoming more standardized, remember that different labs may test or report differently, and may come up with different results even with t wo pieces of fabric from the exact same roll, so take the numbers with a grain of salt. Keep in mind that some manufacturers report waterproof ratings in PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) rather than millimeters, which has a conversion rate of 704 mm = 1 PSI. How breathable a garment do I need? You would think that more is better but the real answer depends on your level of activity. A layer of warm, moist air between your body and your shell can mean warmth as long as your underlayers don’t become saturated with moisture. In cold, dry weather a super breathable shell can actually lead to visible clouds of water vapor exiting the wearer’s body, which leads to heat loss. It’s not uncommon for owners of eVent™ jackets, for instance, to need more insulation under their shells to stay warm. If all your riding is lift -served, you don’t hike to out-of-the-way lines, and you take regular breaks in the lodge where you remove your coat, a breathability rating of 5,000 to 8,000 grams will probably be fine. If you do a lot of “high energy” riding or active sidecountry where you often break a sweat getting to your destination or returning to the ski area, look for breathability in the 10,000 to 15,000 gram range. Backcountry hardcores and people who commonly skin or boot for thousands of vertical feet in a day should look for garments with breathability in the 20,000 plus range. How are breathability ratings determined? Like waterproof ratings, breathability ratings are determined by both manufacturers and independent labs, but the testing met hodologies are quite diverse and almost impossible to compare with each other. Results can vary wildly based on test, temperature, humidity and pressure a nd are not standardized from brand to brand, or test to test. Most testing doesn’t reflect real world winter conditions, like near freez ing outside temperatures with high relative humidity. Since manufacturers seldom reveal the actual test used, and are probably keen on reporting the h ighest possible figures to promote sales, it’s best to read these numbers with the eye of a skeptic, but generally within a given brand or family of fabrics it’s safe to say more grams is more breathable (if a company grades breathability on an RET scale – Resistance to Evaporative Heat Transfer – a lower value is better). Membrane or Coating? Waterproof/breathable fabrics with ePTFE membranes, led by GORE -TEX®, have dominated the market for years and still tend to offer the best combination of waterproof breathability at the high end of the market. eVent™ fabric, which forgoes the monolithic (solid) Polyurethane protective layer on the fabric's interior, has raised the bar on breathability for hard shell fabrics over the past few years. As technology allows t he creation of thinner and thinner layers, high performance Polyurethane and Polyester membranes are beginning to take up a larger portion of the market . Examples are Marmot's MemBrain® (Polyurethane) and SympaTex (Polyester). ePTFE membranes tend to be quite dimensionally rigid, while Polyurethane membranes have some give and are suitable for stretch fabrics. Membranes come in may different types and price ranges, but chances are you'll want a 2 Layer or 3 Layer fabric with a laminated membrane if you're looking for a versatile and durable snow garment. Coated fabrics tend to be very waterproof but lack breathability in comparison to membrane laminates. These fabrics are less expensive and are improving as manufacturers finds ways to make the coatings thinner and more porous. What is seam sealing and why is it important? Seam sealing, sometimes referred to as seam taping, covers the tiny holes made by the needle in the sewing process so they do n’t leak, using a heat application of thin waterproof tape. Sometimes seams are bonded together using glue or heat, but typically they are first sew n then taped. Garments can be either “fully taped” or “critically taped” – the difference is that a fully taped garment has every seam taped, while a c ritically taped one has tape only on high exposure areas like the neck, shoulders, and chest. Without adequate seam sealing you’ll get wet even with the best fabric. What is DWR? DWR stands for Durable Water Repellent. Almost all outerwear exterior fabrics are treated with some sort of DWR. It’s meant t o keep the fabric from becoming saturated with water and adding weight. DWR causes water to bead -up and roll off the fabric and is affected by abrasion , dirt and repeated washings. This is why after some use, a garment will appear to no longer be waterproof. This isn’t the case, though - it just means the DWR has worn off and the face fabric is getting saturated. Aftermarket DWR sprays are available from companies like Nikwax to re-condition your waterproof/breathable garment after washing – try one of these if you notice water soaking into the face fabric of your Waterpro of/Breathable garments.

Apparently the rave scenes most popular item that everybody owned was a long sleeve white t -shirt, coincidently the best garment that you could hope to do a bit of DIY with. Cotton, merino wool , polyester, nylon any could be used dependant on the season.

I have enjoyed working on this project i think it appealed to me as i have a great interest in sustainability as well as what is achievable in terms of what the wearer and their lifestyle demands their garment does for them. I love materials that mean clothing actually serves a variety of purposes, i don't believe in fast fashion , making clothes for people to buy and throw away the next month is extremely wrong but our society has embraced it. It is a shame that people don't care or try to be sustainable when it should be law considering the effects it has on the earth. The large corporations that embrace sustainability are also questionable , it seems like they put on the caring front but they only care about making money and if the sustainability aspect will affect their company profits in any way it's not going to happen. I don't think the people that have the power to drive a sustainable future forward are pulling their weight, they only want to benefit for themselves. The issue is huge and i don't think im ready for the industry yet i want to help people and then try to influence people. I want to finish this degree but as soon as i do i think i will go to the army to train as a medic and maybe one day try to change some opinions in the fashion world. I think that LCF pushing sustainability on their courses is one of the best efforts to combat fast fashion that i have heard of. Of course there are many people that will just be ignorant and disregard what is inevitable but fortunately it gets through to some people. Hopefully it gets through to the people who have the most talent that can potentially go on to do big things in the industry. Of course once it becomes cool everyone will start doing it and that is exactly what needs to happen. The talent in the industry is the only chance that sustainable fashion has simply because the people at the top only want to make money and if sustainability becomes trendy they will allow for it to happen as thats what will be required of them to make money. There are alot of frustrating issues and politics here but there is still a fighting chance. My project is based on sustainability reaching unreal levels of popularity and becoming totally marketable. It has to be sustainable. It has to be fun and eventually it must be done! The acid house scene gives me the best sense of this, people not buying clothing, people not interested in anything but love and goodtimes, people reinventing their clothing. I had the idea that with all the dancing and field raves etc why have your goodtime ruined by garments that can't perform for you. Breathability , comfort , waterproofing will all help in and out of the scene, wearing the jacket you wear on your everyday commute to a rave, if it is made of the right fabrics it will perform in both scenarios. We need to stop producing unnecessary fabrics every time i visit a fabric shop i see so much fabric that is just useless. It is ugly. It does not perform in any way. So why has it even been made! Very frustrating.


Consumer board

I dislike consumer boards they are tacky and i try to make garments that the majority of people and enjoy. Acid house was all about being happy and bringing people together it was notorious for attracting people from all over lawyers dancing next to bin men all tripping and having a great time then after the weekend back to everyday living. But if i had to make a generalisation then I'd say they were males and females aged 18 -30 in fulltime employment living for the weekend, the beauty of the acid house scene is that you don't have to have any interest in fashion to fit in, only to have a good time.
