Our exhibition at Keukenhof Gardens Keukenhof, also known as the Garden of Europe, is situated near Lisse, Netherlands, and is the world’s largest flower garden. Keukenhof Park, approximately seven million flower bulbs are planted annually in the park, which covers an area of 32 hectares. Keukenhof is located in South Holland in the small town of Lisse, south of Haarlem and southwest of Amsterdam. It is accessible by bus from the train stations of Haarlem, Leiden and Schiphol. It is located in an area called the “Dune and Bulb Region” (Duin- en Bollenstreek).
Keukenhof is open annually from mid-March to mid-May. The best time to view the tulips is around mid-April, depending on the weather.

Hyacinths These 16/17 cm bulbs produce huge flower spikes in a nice array of colors from which to choose. Hyacinths especially dislike “wet feet”, so please make sure that they are planted in a nice spot with very well-draining soil. Some people may experience an itchy reaction to hyacinth bulbs, so you may want to wear protective gardening gloves when handling them. Bloom: March

Triumph Tulips Angular shaped flowers on sturdy stems, which will stand up even in severe weather conditions. Longlasting flowers, available in an extensive range of colors. Perfect Tulips for beds and borders. The best type for forcing in pots. Triumph Tulips are a result of crossings between Single Early and late flowering Tulips. They grow medium-tall and bloom in the middle of the Tulip season. Triumph Tulips are more and more in demand each year because they have sturdy stems and can be forced to bloom in greenhouses during the winter months. Some varieties come in broken or two-tone colors and some in solid colors.
Because of their strong stems, they are excellent for landscaping as well. Triumph Tulips have an height from 14 to 22 and bloom from April through May.

Crocus Sativus Saffron is said to make people cheerful and so will this little flower. The little crocuses that flower before Christmas have been neglected, perhaps because everyone muddles them with the “autumn crocus” the colchicums - which are a much coarser affair. 150 bulbs per display box Colchicums are members of the lily family whereas

ERING
such refined favourites as freesias, crocosmia and schizostylis. In Mediterranean countries, once the rains come and the earth turns green again, the grass is studded with tiny flower globes in blue, white or palest pink. They are delicate and their petals are translucent.
The appeal of any flower that suggests spring as soon as the leaves begin to fall cannot be over-emphasised. You need all the colour you can get when mornings are shrouded in fog and afternoons end at 4pm. Crocus sativus, the saffron crocus, was probably introduced here by the Romans. In Tudor times enough were grown in Essex to give the town of Saffron Walden its name.
The orange filaments (try adding them to mashed potato with fish pie) were said to make people cheerful. So cheerful, according to Alice Coats in her book Flowers and their Histories, that one herbal reported “a lady of Trent . . . almost shaken to pieces with laughing immoderately for a space of three hours, which was occasioned by her taking too much saffron”. It would be an expensive tonic these days. The price of the dried stigmas is sky high, but you could grow Crocus sativus yourself easily enough. Entrepreneurs might like to create a niche-market for culinary saffron. The rest of us can enjoy the flowers and an occasional treat for the pot. The flowers are large and purple, with darker veins and a violet centre around the orange stigmas. It is a showy and rather modern colour contrast, but this is not one to naturalise. It needs deep planting in good soil and plenty of sunshine.
