Dinnerplate Dahlias Dinnerplate Dahlias are distinctive in gardens, as backgrounds for borders and as decorative hedges. But they’re also gorgeous for cutflower arrangements. Each massive, long-lasting flower is a bouquet in itself. And the more you cut, the better the flowers bloom.

Caladiums Caladiums grow from corms and can be propagated by dividing the tubers. They are hardy only to USDA plant hardiness zone 10; in colder areas, they are typically grown as tender bulbs or as houseplants. During their growing season, they need a great deal of water and should not be allowed to dry out.

Most varieties prefer partial to full shade, although sun-resistant varieties are now in cultivation.
In temperate areas, they should be lifted before the first frost. The corms are dried and stored for the winter when temperatures fall to 65 °F (18°C), and stored moderately dry (not bone-dry) over the winter at temperatures between 56 °F (13 °C) and 61 °F (16 °C).
All parts of the plant are poisonous. They should not be ingested and may irritate sensitive skin.

Clematis The genus is composed of mostly vigorous, woody, climbing vines / lianas. The woody stems are quite fragile until several years old. Leaves are opposite and divided into leaflets and leafstalks that twist and curl around supporting structures to anchor the plant as it climbs. Some species are shrubby, and some others are herbaceous perennial plants.

The cool temperate species are deciduous, but many of the warmer climate species are evergreen. They grow best when their roots are shaded but their tops are in full sun. They are generally acid-intolerant calciphytes that grow on limestone and other basic soils.
Elephant Ears Elephant Ears are grown for their beautiful large leaves. They are suitable for growing in containers and for borders. The large leaves grow atop 3-7 foot stems. They need a minimum temperature of 70F. They can be grown outdoors for the summer and brought in before frost.

Oxalis Availability Oxalis Regnelli is commonly known as ‘Ever blooming Shamrock’. The white variety develops three large, sharply cut, green leaves and produces a five-petaled white flower approximately one inch diameter. Oxalis Triangularis develops three large, sharply cut, purple leaves and produces a five-petaled pink flower approximately one inch in diameter. Oxalis Myke is similar in characteristics to Triangularis with a more consistent, darker leaf. Oxalis are generally grown from November to May, nut can be forced year-round. Plants are normally ready to market 5-8 weeks after planting. Storage after arrival Before planting, they can be stored up to 4 weeks at 4050ºF. Keep them covered so they do not dry out! Planting instructions Plant 3 bulbs per 4” pot or 4 bulbs per 5” pot. Lay the corms (roots) flat and cover with ½” of soil medium. Soil pH should be 6.5 and no lower. Soil Recent research has shown that soil mixture as found in Fafard #2 and Metro Mix 350 are best suited - avoid any soil mix which contains bark.
Watering After planting, water the planting medium thoroughly. Subsequently, only water the medium when it becomes dry and/or the plants begin to grow vigorously. Temperature The plants grow well in full sun or light shade at temperatures between 70-75ºF. If grown at lower than 65ºF or higher than 85ºF, the plants may suffer. If flowers bloom down in the foliage, the plant has probably been grown with too much shade. Well ventilated conditions must be maintained. Once the plants show vigorous growth, the temperature may be lowered to 65ºF. Diseases Oxalis are almost disease free, but will attract insects in warmer temperatures. The following product is advised for spider: Pentac 50 wettable powder. 8 ounces per 100 gallons of water, 2 applications per week for two weeks. Fertilizer Use a complete NPK fertilizer on a weekly basis once the plants begin to grow vigorously. Either 200 PPM N of 20-20-20 or 14-14-14. Osmocote can be used. If any chlorosis begins to appear in the oldest leaves, use a micronutrient foliage spray.
Germination In order to assure proper germination, start Oxalis Regnelli White at 68-75ºF - Triangularis and Myke at 72-78ºF. ‘Triangularis’ Oxalis

Iris Availability All ‘pretreated’ Iris bulbs are shipped on a weekly schedule until early March. The begin with Ideal 10/11 and White Wedgewood 10-11 in mid-October. All other varieties and sizes are available from early November. Storage after arrival Very limited: only one week at 48ºF out of shipping box. To assure good flower production, it is important that bulbs are planted at once. Planting medium Because of the need for moisture it is preferred that Iris are planted in ground beds, with a fair amount of clay or soil. If soilless mixtures or shallow flats are used, put plastic on the bottom to prevent drying of the roots. Planting Before planting, soak the bulbs in lukewarm water for 30 minutes with 1 of the 3 following formulas: 1 - Captan (rate of 8 pounds per 100 gallons) combined with Cleary’s 3336 WP 50% (rate of ¾ to pound per 100 gallons) 2 - Captan (rate of 8 pounds per 100 gallons) combined with Cleary’s 3336 WP 46,2% Flowable (rate of 20 ounces per100 gallons)
3 - Captan (rate of 8 pounds per 100 gallons) combined with Domain Flowable 46,2% (rate of 30 ounces per 100 gallons) Watering Drench the soil beds 24 hours before planting. After the bulbs are planted, water again thoroughly. On sunny days you may have to water every day, otherwise you have to water every other day. Light Keep as much light in the greenhouse as possible. Do not place anything such as flats, hanging pots, etc., overhead. Greenhouse temperature This should run 55-63ºF. Warmer temperatures will keep the stems shorter, while a cooler temperature will not be harmful, it may alter the scheduled flowering date Ventilation Good ventilation is essential. Do not permit the humanity to build up in the greenhouse. Fertilizer After the first two weeks, it is advisable to water once a week with a calcium nitrate, at a rate of 2 pounds per 100 gallons of water. Always apply between the rows, never water overhead.
