Each day when we drop Montana off for school we know that she is in a caring, loving and warm environment. The preschool has helped her mature and learn so much about herself. She always has a smile on her face when we say “Montana, come on, it’s time for school” and of course so do we. We have truly had a wonderful experience with the preschool and are very excited to have plenty more. Thank you for everything you have done to make Montana’s transition to preschool a positive experience. – Lauren Maxwell and Family ***

We are the parents of two happy children who have thoroughly enjoyed their first year at Preschool of the Arts. The environment is a very safe, energetic, loving and nurturing one where each child is made to feel special. The teachers are genuinely interested in the wellbeing and enrichment of each and every child and take the time in getting to know each child and work with them individually, based on their needs. They also work hard at guiding the children through important life skills such as making friends, sharing and respect for others and developing their confidence. The academics in Pre-K at Preschool of the Arts have been outstanding. Our daughter has learned to read this year. She will be entering Kindergarten fully prepared from an educational and emotional perspective. Through her dedication to the children of this community, Ettie Zaklos has created a superior preschool in Naples and we couldn’t be more grateful to her and the amazing staff at Preschool of the Arts. – Melissa and Jarred Kaplan

From the Editor

Welcome to the fourth edition of Connections. This is THE publication to turn to for the local Jewish community’s activities, programs, services and organizations. I am often asked by friends and family on the east coast of Florida and in the New York area, whether there is “Jewish life” in Southwest Florida. Well...what you are holding in your hands is proof positive that Jewish life is alive and growing in our area. Did you know that in Southwest Florida (from Marco Island to Bradenton) there are 29 synagogues, including eight Chabads? There are three Jewish Family Service agencies; several chapters of Hadassah, ORT, NCJW and JWV; and a Holocaust Museum in Naples. There are four Jewish Film Festivals, two major Jewish Book Festivals, numerous book discussion groups, mah jongg galore, several Jewish food fairs, large community holiday celebrations, and hundreds of cultural and learning opportunities. When you go through these pages, you will learn a lot about the wealth of opportunities – cultural, educational and spiritual – available to the Jewish community in Collier County.

Federation Social Service

Through Jewish Family & Community Services of Southwest Florida, the Jewish Federation supports a wide range of social services to Jewish individuals and families in crisis.

Tikkun Olam – Repairing the World

Our Community Relations Committee (CRC) conducts outreach within the Jewish and general communities, fostering awareness and cooperation through programs and activities of the Israel Affairs Committee and Catholic/Jewish Dialogue of Collier County, and during Florida Jewish Heritage Month. The CRC Annual Human Needs Award provides support for at-risk populations in our community.

T

These are but a few examples of Jewish values. Basically everything that we do in this community and everything we make possible for Jews in need wherever they may be, derive direction from these values. I believe that the Jewish Federation of Collier County and its partners – our donors, the agencies and organizations – do an exemplary job. But do not think for one moment that all the work is done. I invite you; I urge you; I challenge you; take a role, play a part in connecting to make our community an even better place to live. Together we can continue to create a beautiful kehilla, a community, which can be proud of the work it does.

Who is “Federation” and what do we do?

he answer is simple: It’s you – and every member of the Jewish community of Collier County and the surrounding areas. The Federation is your center for Jewish Philanthropy. The Jewish Federation of Collier County is the thread that runs through the fabric of our Jewish community, its organizations and services, connecting us all. The Federation supports programs for Jewish people in need in Collier County, Israel and throughout the world, providing food for the hungry and counseling for the troubled, spearheading rescue and relief efforts for isolated Jews in distressed regions, and funding innovative Jewish educational and unity initiatives. The Federation creates a sense of community for thousands of Jewish residents in Collier County and its surrounding areas by creating and supporting programs to further Jewish learning, identity, pride and culture. Federation meets the challenge of providing for the needs of our Jewish brethren, wherever they may be, from young children and families to seniors. The Jewish Federation of Collier County is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing connection, advocacy, education and care for anyone in need through its network of beneficiary and constituent agencies and local Jewish organizations. While the Federation is doing so here, elsewhere other Federations and network communities are doing the

same; all are connected through the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA). Founded on the principles of unity and dignity for all, today’s Federation Campaign has evolved into a major fundraising, planning and coordinating body of Collier County’s Jewish community. The Federations of North America are meeting places for Jews from all backgrounds, ensuring the continuity of the Jewish people here at home, through national initiatives, in Israel and in 60 countries globally. Through your support of the Federation’s Annual Campaign, you play a vital role in helping Federation “get the job done.” Think of it as a triangle: Federation, its agencies and you. So, if anyone asks you who Federation is – just point to yourself – because that’s where it all begins.

Where does the money go?

The local Campaign allocation process involves a committee of volunteers as well as Federation staff. They take part in this important process, which balances available resources against community priorities through a grant process. Additionally, several national organizations receive support from the domestic allocation. Internationally, your contribution works to support a broad range of social, educational and vocational needs throughout the Jewish world.

Federation Locally, the Federation makes a grant to Jewish Family & Community Services of SWFL, in support of the social services they provide for our community. And grants are made in support of a variety of educational and cultural programs conducted by local synagogues, the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida and other local Jewish organizations. Our allocation to JFNA is distributed to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), which brings

relief to the needy and works to revitalize Jewish life in 60 countries; the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), which rescues people from countries and resettles them in Israel; and for supplemental grants in support of special programs and projects that our community has embraced like Neve Michael Youth & Children’s Village in Pardes Hana, Israel, the Sapir Community Center in Kfar Saba, Israel, transportation and Shabbat dinners in Cuba, and the Progressive Synagogue Preschool in Kiev, Ukraine. Giving tzedakah to an umbrella organization like Federation, which then distributes it to a number of member agencies, has its roots in early Jewish history. In small towns and large cities, donations were given to a communal kupah as an expression of devotion to community and the entire Jewish people. It demonstrates a love of community that is without limitation.

The annual fundraising arm of the Jewish Federation is organized to secure maximum funds to meet the financial needs of its local, regional, national and overseas humanitarian organizations and beneficiary agencies.

Major Gifts and Lions of Judah are the premier fundraising divisions of the Jewish Federation. These divisions provide exclusive social experiences to the community’s leading Jewish philanthropists who give a major portion of the Annual Campaign dollars raised each year. These donors are dedicated leaders involved in Federation’s extended lifeline of humanitarian relief and support.

Community Outreach

Each year, the Federation hosts numerous events, affording the community opportunities to gather, socialize, network and connect. Here is a sampling of the larger ones: The Annual Community Celebration kicks off the new campaign with a lavish event and entertainment. Columnist Dave Barry and actor Henry Winkler were the special guests at recent events. The World of Jewtopia entertained the crowd in 2011. The 2012 event focused on Israel, food, fun and the future, and featured mentalist Sidney Friedman and lots of music and dancing. And for 2013, our event co-chairs are planning another evening to be remembered.

A Guide to Jewish Living in Collier County

Federation The Evy Lipp People of the Book Cultural Event is attended by 700-800 people. Past guests include Alan Dershowitz, Ted Koppel, Jeffrey Toobin, Dennis Prager, Rabbi Harold Kushner and Bob Simon. The February 20, 2013 event features Dr. Daniel Gordis. The event is free to Federation members. The Community Chanukah Celebrations in Naples and on Marco Island are always festive events with the lighting of the giant menorah, the Naples Klezmer Revival Band, local choirs, and greetings from local dignitaries.

Publications

The Federation publishes the Federation Star, a monthly newspaper that is mailed to over 3,200 Jewish households in the Collier County area. The newspaper is the one publication that ties together the Jewish community of Collier County and surrounding areas.

The Federation also compiles, updates and distributes a Community Directory for use by the Jewish community. And this copy of Connections is published by the Federation.

eNewsletter

Each week the Federation emails a community eNewsletter with the latest on upcoming community events and cultural activities, news from Israel, important news updates and more. To sign up, visit www.jewishnaples.org or send your request to info@jewishnaples.org.

he Community Relations Committee (CRC) of the Jewish Federation of Collier County conducts outreach within the Jewish and general communities. The CRC educates, informs and provides programs for the community on Jewish issues and experiences. It monitors state and federal legislation and its effect on the Jewish community, advocates for Israel, promotes separation of religion from government and public schools, provides programs on the Holocaust and anti-Semitism, and promotes religious freedom. The CRC sponsors several events during Florida Jewish History Month, including the annual CRC/Friends of The Library of Collier County Naples Klezmer Revival Band Concert and the annual UN Holocaust Remembrance Observance, held at a local synagogue or church, featuring local clergy, a guest speaker and musical performances. The CRC also presents a major community event annually. On Sunday, April 14, a community-wide event will be held celebrating ISRAEL@65 and will include a Jewish Agency Fair and a special screening of the film Israel Inside: How a Small Nation Makes a Big Difference.

Annual Human Needs Award

Several years ago the Federation Board and the CRC established a “Fund for Human Needs” to recognize organizations for their generous spirit and service to the entire community. It was another way for Jews in Collier County, as represented by their Federation, to practice tikkun olam, “bettering the world.” Grants have been made to the Harry Chapin Food Bank, Catholic Charities, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Collier Council on Aging, NAACP Collier Branch, Collier County Education Foundation, Redlands Christian Association Literacy program, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, Baby Basics, Bedtime Bundles, Shelter for Abused Women and Children, and the Senior Friendship Health Center.

Annual Stand Up For Justice Educator Award

In 2011, the Community Relations Committee established an Educator Award to recognize Middle School and High School teachers, librarians, media specialists, guidance counselors and administrators who demonstrate outstanding, unique and replicable education initiatives countering bigotry and bullying.

Arts & Culture Community Cultural Event “Evy Lipp People of the Book” event presents Daniel Gordis

W

hen we do the math, we realize that in 2013, Israel turns sixty-five. Throughout this milestone year, much will be written and discussed about the promise inherent in the founding of Israel and the way forward to realize that promise in the face of non-stop assaults on its very existence. No one is better equipped to explore these weighty questions than Rabbi Daniel Gordis, Senior Vice President and the Koret Distinguished Fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem, our speaker for the “Evy Lipp People of the Book” event. Although he has not given the Jewish Federation of Collier County the final topic for his presentation on Wednesday, February 20, it would be reasonable to expect him to speak from his depth of knowledge about today’s Israel and the myriad of issues it must confront daily. We can also expect him to be upbeat and hopeful, based on his latest book: The Promise of Israel: Why Its Seemingly Greatest Weakness Is Actually Its Greatest Strength. Daniel Gordis was born in1959, in New York City. He received a B.A. from Columbia University, a master’s degree and rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. January 9 - February 2 The Neil Simon comedy Barefoot in the Park is a sweet comedy of young love and commitment that follows newlyweds Corie and Paul as they negotiate their first apartment with eccentric neighbors and a meddling mother. Corie is a free spirit who wants to run barefoot in the park, while buttoneddown Paul just can’t understand that sort of thing. www.naplesplayers.org January 10 - 20 Grand Hotel, the Tommy Tune Awardwinning musical, is set in the world’s most opulent, extravagant hotel. It is 1928. The world is between wars, the stock market is booming, Berlin is the center of high life, and optimism rules

the day. Inspired by Vicki Baum’s period novel, Luther Davis (Kismet, Timbuktu!) collaborated with the prolific, distinguished composer-lyricist team of George Forrest and Robert Wright with additional music and lyrics by Maury Yeston. Together, they created a seamless musical that boasts an engaging, non-stop book and a powerful score that sweeps you away with all of the lavishness of the 1920s. www.theatrezone-florida.com

Film JCMI’s Jewish Film Festival celebrates 12th anniversary

F

or a dozen years the JCMI Jewish Film Festival has been screening first-run, award-winning films about Jewish life, history and experience to a growing audience eager to connect with stories of other Jews. We have screened over 45 films from around the world – films from France, England, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Argentina, China, Kenya, Ethiopia, the United States and Israel. What diversity! This season’s films follow our tradition and celebrate a dozen years of presenting the best of the best of films about Jewish life. But, in something of an exception, this season, two of our three feature films were made in the United States and are in English. Another exception is that for the first time, our season does not include a Holocaust film although filmmakers continue to feel compelled to present Holocaust

stories. In searching for unique and untold stories, filmmakers are up against time about how to remember the Holocaust once the generation of survivors and witnesses are gone. On Opening Day, Sunday, December 16, we presented Hava Nagila, a joyous musical experience of a Jewish melody that has become universal. Harry Belafonte, Connie Stevens and my favorite, Chubby Checker, have sung it to cheering audiences. Our hearts thrilled this summer when Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman presented her program to this music and won a gold medal. It may be an old melody but the story of how it began, how it brings people together, and why it has such new appeal is what this film is about. In January we will screen David, also a U.S. film and a very beautiful story of two Brooklyn boys, one the son

of Muslim immigrants and the other an Orthodox Jew with American-born parents. Their unique friendship crosses interfaith barriers, suggesting that children and maybe adults, no matter their religious or ethnic differences, can share friendship, especially in America. In March we present the acclaimed film – in Hebrew, Arabic, French and English – A Bottle in the Gaza Sea. This is a unique story about a boy and a girl, one in Israel and one in Gaza, and how their lives become intertwined by a note put in a bottle and tossed into the sea. Could love be possible between an Israeli and a Palestinian? JCMI’S Jewish Film Festival is a celebration of Jewish life. Come join us for this terrific season. In 1912, a New York philanthropist helped create the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, the educational engine that drives Israel’s high-technology economy. Today, things have come full circle, and New York City has turned to the Technion and its partner, Cornell University, to help build a cutting-edge applied science campus on Roosevelt Island. It is to be a global magnet for tech talent and entrepreneurship that will help fuel economic growth for the 21st century. The Technion is a world leader in science, engineering, research and entrepreneurship. Its researchers and alumni can be found at the core of innovative startups in such sectors as clean-tech, cell therapy, drug delivery and nanotechnology. That is why Israel today has the highest concentration of high-tech startup companies anywhere outside Silicon Valley. The American Technion Society has worked tirelessly in support of the Technion’s mission—to advance innovation, advance Israel, and advance the world.

Holocaust Studies

FGCU Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies

T

he Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University was established in 2005 due to the pioneering efforts of several members of the Jewish communities of Fort Myers and Naples. Under the sponsorship of Ann Jacobson and several others, and ably directed at the University in its first years by Dr. John Cox, the Center grew from offering a few events relating to Holocaust and other commemorations, to one which became a focus in Southwest Florida for all academic matters relating to Jewish civilization, the Holocaust, genocide, human rights, and remembrance. After the departure of Dr. Cox for the University of North Carolina Charlotte, the Center was directed in an interim capacity by FGCU’s Dr. Myra Mendible.

In August 2012 the University welcomed Dr. Paul Bartrop, formerly of Australia and New Jersey, as its first full-time Director. Conscious of the fact that the past century was the bloodiest in history, Dr. Bartrop has re-dedicated the aims of the Center to fulfilling those of its founders. Accordingly, the Center will continue in its quest to increase knowledge and understanding about the Holocaust and other genocides, as well as to strengthen the democratic institutions that can confront genocide and other threats to human rights, such as intolerance, anti-Semitism, racism and ignorance. The Center seeks to achieve these aims through providing educational opportunities within the University, the wider community, and in partnership with educational and other organizations throughout the State of Florida,

the United States, and internationally. During the next year we will see a number of important historical anniversaries: 75th anniversaries from the crucial year of 1938; 70th anniversaries from the equally crucial year of 1943; and others since then. The Center will be conducting several events throughout the year, and publicizing them widely. For information about the Center, donating opportunities or Center events, please contact: Dr. Paul Bartrop, Director, 239.590.7239 or pbartrop@fgcu.edu Website: www.fgcu.edu/hc/ Florida Gulf Coast University 10501 FGCU Boulevard South Fort Myers, FL 33965

his is the only museum telling the story of 250 years of Florida Jewish life. Jewish Museum of Florida on South Beach is housed in two lovingly restored buildings that were formerly synagogues for Miami Beach’s first congregation. Both on the National Register of Historic Places, the 1936 Art Deco building features Jewish historical exhibits and boasts

a copper dome, marble bimah and 80 stained-glass windows while the 1929 building contains Jewish art exhibits. The core MOSAIC exhibit shows how Jews maintained their traditions and communities as they contributed to develop the state. Changing temporary exhibits focus on themes of Jewish history, art and culture—each with a Florida connection. Jewish history time

lines, films, Orovitz Museum Store, and a Collections and Research Center complete the experience, in addition to a full schedule of programs that complement exhibit themes. n Sundays, February 3 and 10, Temple Shalom’s Rabbi Emeritus, James Perman, shares his extensive knowledge in his inimitable style for Sunday School for Adults, now in its 18th year. This year’s program is entitled “Where did you get that great idea? It’s the Evolution of Torah!” Rabbi Perman will consider how ancient ideas from the Torah spin out and take shape over the centuries. Hear how the best and most creative Jewish thinking grew out of traditional Jewish learning as it encountered different surrounding cultures. Understand how our most cherished Jewish values evolved, offering a framework of comfort and certainty in an ever-changing world. Starting with the revolutionary discovery of monotheism to the postmodern Jewish thinkers today, Jewish ideas have exercised a powerful influence on Western civilization. Here is a concise glimpse of this process, so essential to our self-understanding as Jews. There is no cost, and all are welcome. For more information, please call the temple office at 239.455.3030.

a “few good volunteers” is always of primary importance. Many of you have come forward to offer your services for programs, events, special projects, as board officers and committee chairs. Thank You! We hope you will continue to work on our behalf. As you consider your availability, you might ask yourself these questions: XXHow often am I available? XXAm I willing to offer someone a ride? If yes, can I offer it occasionally or with some regularity? XXAm I interested in visiting someone in their home? If yes, how often would I visit? Would I be able to during season or throughout the year?

holiday delivery, the holiday soup kitchen service, Hanukkah basket delivery, or JFCS office projects? XXAm I able to offer a particular skill or service? (Frequent requests are for budget instruction, legal assistance, home repair and/or auto repair.) XXAm I willing to provide services pro bono or at a reduced cost? Your answers to this self-screening will help us find the best volunteer fit for you. Don’t hesitate to let us know your preferences. A good volunteer experience can be mutually delightful. hat is more sacred to the Jewish people than the Torah? The Torah tells our unique history and gives us guidelines for how to live a moral and meaningful life. It is what defines us as a people. This year, the members of Temple Shalom will write the words of the Torah with our own hands, renewing our connection to the Torah, to each other, and to the greater Jewish community.

In addition, throughout the months of Our Torah – Scribing Our Future, we will celebrate the Torah, learning it and gaining new insights to it through programs, classes, performances and lectures. Through Our Torah – Scribing Our Future, Temple Shalom is giving young and old a new opportunity for connection and belonging – each person who has a hand in writing the Torah scroll will be linked to the Torah

Special Interest Groups

umanistic Judaism is a voice for Jews who value their Jewish identity and who seek an alternative to conventional Judaism. Humanistic Judaism affirms the right of individuals to shape their own lives, independent of supernatural authority. It believes that reason is the best method for the discovery of truth and that morality derives from human needs and is the defense of human dignity. In a universe that is indifferent to the desires and aspirations of human beings, people must ultimately rely on people. Founded by Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine in 1963 in Detroit, there are now close to 30 communities of Humanistic Jews in North America. The Naples-based Havurah, when formed in late spring 2008, was warmly welcomed as a member organization of the Jewish Federation of Collier County.

In 2009 the organization obtained its 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. The following year Humanistic Jewish Havurah of Southwest Florida became affiliated with the Society for Humanistic Judaism (www.shj.org). Membership in the Havurah includes full membership and benefits of this national organization. Not only has local membership increased each year but so has the number of activities provided for the members and the community. The first Friday of each month finds members gathering for a pot luck Shabbat followed by a stimulating program. During season the community is invited to Sunday afternoon meetings devoted to topics of interest to humanistic Jews. Additionally, members enjoy home study groups and celebrations at Yom Kippur, Chanukah and Passover. Jewish survival is due to our ability to adapt to the circumstances of our own times. Humanistic Judaism provides a realistic, rational approach to our tradi-

Israel Connection State of Israel Bonds — This is Israel

Environment, antiquities pose unique challenges for Israel’s transportation advances By James S. Galfund ugust 26, 2012 marked the 75th anniversary of an incremental step forward in the annals of Jerusalem transportation – the day the first taxi began plying the city’s streets. In a city of transformative events spanning millennia, it’s unlikely the anniversary garnered much attention, not only because today’s Jerusalem is awash in taxis, but also because Jerusalemites now have the option of being whisked through the capital via modern light rail. Greater Accessibility A visitor from Israel Bonds – the organization that has enabled major transportation advances in Israel – discovered that to ride the light rail is to experience a microcosm of Jerusalem’s diversity. Fellow passengers included secular Israelis, the ultra-Orthodox, devout

A

Muslims and camera-toting tourists. Each train has a capacity of around 500 passengers, the equivalent of 10 buses. With a first-stage route encompassing nearly two dozen stops – the Old City (providing the quintessential Israel experience of riding state-ofthe-art transportation past a site of ancient pilgrimage), multiple neighborhoods, the Mahane Yehuda Market and the downtown district – the light rail has changed the way residents work, shop and plan their days. Surveys show substantial increases in pedestrian traffic stemming from the greater accessibility provided by the light rail. Mahane Yehuda, for example, has seen a 38 percent increase, and visits to the popular ‘triangle’ area of King George Avenue, Jaffa Road and Ben-Ye-

huda Street jumped 34 percent. Overall increases average 41 percent. An added bonus for Jerusalemites and visitors alike has been the conversion of Jaffa Road into a pedestrian mall. A Dramatic Reboot Getting to and from the capital is also undergoing a dramatic reboot. Riding the rails from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem – a distance of less than 50 miles – currently takes 2½ hours. By 2017, the trip will shrink to a mere 30 minutes. The key to the drastic time reduction is the ambitious construction of a complex network of bridges and tunnels. And, because this is Israel, there are additional considerations beyond the obvious topographical challenges inherent in boring through hundreds of feet of solid rock. One is archeological. In Israel, any project entailing digging is sensitive to the fact that priceless artifacts might be uncovered during the excavation process. If antiquities are discovered, work stops and archeologists are called in to examine the relics. Eco-Friendly Responsibilities The second consideration is environmental. Israel is a world leader in environmental sustainability, and Aliza

T

he strength of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which has been guarding the State of Israel since it declared independence in 1948, derives from the selfless determination and great capabilities of the young men and women who form it. At the age of 18, these courageous young people join the IDF, promising to uphold the difficult tasks of defending the State of Israel and guaranteeing the safety of those who reside within its borders. The responsibility of the Israeli government is to prepare and train these soldiers and provide them with the necessary tools. Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) has assumed the responsibility of providing these soldiers with love and support in

an effort to ease the burden they carry on behalf of the Jewish community worldwide. In 1981, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces was created as a notfor-profit organization with the mission of providing and supporting social, educational, cultural, and recreational programs and facilities for the young men and women soldiers of Israel who defend the Jewish homeland. It also offers these services to the families of fallen soldiers. FIDF operates through 15 branches around the United States and Latin America, located close to large Jewish communities. Thanks to an expanding donor base and exceptional generosity, FIDF has experienced unprecedented growth over the last few years.

By awakening Jewish pride and creating spiritual connections that last a lifetime, Chabad’s friendly and inclusive policy means every child is welcome, regardless of affiliation, religious observance or prior knowledge. The diverse student body provides a setting where every child will be comfortable and able to learn at a relaxed pace.

The fun, hands-on curriculum covers Jewish traditions, heritage, history and culture. Highly motivated teachers have a proven track record of caring, devotion and academic expertise. eth Tikvah’s Religious School meets on Sundays from 9:00 a.m. until noon and on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Because the program is small, students benefit from individual attention. The Youth Education chair is Phil Jason. Aviva Chorny now directs the program, and she shares teaching duties with Julie Levine and Mallory Duboff. Rabbi Ammos Chorny is also actively engaged in youth education. All are highly qualified, energetic and inventive professionals who have been teaching Jewish youth for many years. Mrs. Chorny focuses on the youngest learners, while Mrs. Levine focuses on the older group. Ms. Duboff specializes in Jewish prayer and music. All have strength in Hebrew.

Beth Tikvah takes advantage of community expertise, bringing in volunteer instructors on subjects ranging from archeology to medical and legal ethics to present-day Israel. Its three learning groups serve younger, intermediate and older students. Participants benefit from computer-based learning sessions, accessing Internet resources that they can share and continue to explore at home. Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation is available. • Participating in a year-long study of “The Jewish Life-Cycle” • Selecting and carrying out community service/social action projects in the spirit of Tikkun Olam • Building skills in, and commitment to, religious observance, and discovering keys to spirituality and community through study, participation and enhanced awareness of Jewish values and traditions • Participating in Jewish music and song A six-page curriculum overview is available upon request or from the synagogue website at www.bethtikvah naples.org. tatistics have shown that our Jewish youth have a much greater sense of, and connectivity to, their Judaism from having attended Jewish summer camps and teen peer group trips to Israel. We recognize this and have established a scholarship fund to encourage and assist families in affording these experiences for their children. The Federation also provides grant support for other youth programs including Birthright Israel and Hillel – The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life nationally and on Florida college and university campuses. Our community’s Jewish Camp/Israel Experience Scholarship Fund is comprised of monies contributed by the Jewish Federation of Collier County, Temple Shalom Sisterhood, Temple Shalom Men’s Club, and some very generous private donors in our community. Partial scholarships are offered for educational programs and experiences in Israel and Jewish summer camps, available for Jewish children residing in Collier County. There is a set amount of money budgeted each year, while the number of applicants varies from year to year. The amount of each scholarship depends on individual need as well as the number of children requesting scholarships. It is our goal to make scholarships available to all eligible applicants. We consider applications for admission to Jewish camps – URJ (Union of Reform Judaism) Camp Coleman, USY (United Synagogue Youth) Camps and all other qualified Jewish camps. The application deadline is November 29, 2013 for summer 2014 activities. Contact the Jewish Federation at 239.263.4205 or your local synagogue for a Scholarship Application.

OTHER. We believe that no child should go to bed hungry. That every senior in our community has the right to live with dignity. And that all Jews should be able to live without fear of persecution—anywhere in the world. That’s why the Jewish Federation’s annual fundraising campaign is so important. With your support, we can help people in need, rescue people in danger and keep our Jewish community vibrant and strong. Together we can do extraordinary things to make the world a better place.

DISCRIMINATE. With millions still out of work, many people in our own community are forced to choose between paying the rent and putting food on the table. That’s why we’re not only expanding our food pantries and meal programs, we’re also offering job training and networking to get people back to work. Today, more people are turning to us for assistance than ever before. Help us ensure that no one is turned away.

FRAGILE: HANDLE WITH

As they grow up, young Jews will face challenges to their beliefs and identity. We believe the best way to protect our children against ignorance and hate is to educate them. From the pride of a preschooler learning his first Hebrew words to the confidence of a college student prepared to grapple with anti-Israel sentiment on campus, we’re strengthening Jewish identity and inspiring a life-long connection to Jewish values. But we need your help.

CARE. Every day, thousands of elderly Jews here at home, in Israel and around the world are fed, sheltered and given the care and love they deserve. From emergency financial assistance to medical care to transportation, with your help we can provide every Jewish senior with the help they need to live with dignity.
