OMEN’S CULTURAL ALLIANCE (WCA) is an affinity group of the Jewish Federation of Collier County. WCA provides the opportunity for its members to meet other women who share similar interests. WCA offers a wide variety of programming, including: study groups in art, film, literature, theatre, and several other areas; special interest groups such as bridge, mah jongg, canasta, biking, “Serious Foodies,” singing, jazz, opera, and ballet; special classes on numerous topics ranging from photography, technology, and flower arranging, to drawing, card playing, and Spanish; a phenomenal lecture series; and a strictly social component where you can have lunch or dinner, meet new people, and renew friendships. We love to welcome new members into our group. Over 1000 women have joined WCA. Membership in WCA makes each woman an official member of the Jewish Federation of Collier County. Signing Up for a Program

All paid-up members of the Women’s Cultural Alliance are eligible to register for any program that is offered. It is necessary, however, to sign up with the liaison for each program/study group/interest group you want to attend. Many groups limit the number of participants in order to enable each participant to have a quality experience, so don’t wait too long to register! Although some programs continue year-round, members must sign up for each new season. Sign-up information for each offering is either in the Program Guide or will appear in a Thursday WCA e-blast that will be sent closer to the date of the event.

Only WCA members may attend WCA classes and programs. All programs will meet at the Federation, unless stated otherwise. 2

Eagle Lakes Community Park, 11565 Tamiami Trail East, Naples 34113 Bird watching is a fun and relaxing activity combining observing nature and taking a leisurely walk with friends. Join us at Eagle Lakes Community Park, home to 160 different species of birds, as we see how many different birds we can find, identify, and observe their behavior. October is the heart of fall migration – birds that only stop here briefly on their flight to even warmer climates for the winter may be seen. We will walk approximately one mile. Leaders Susan and Arthur Sissman are experienced birders, having developed their skills and enthusiasm during 25 years of birding in Florida. Learn to use Microsoft WORD the correct way. Prepare professional looking documents using tabs, borders, and manipulating clipart and pictures. When the word processor refuses to cooperate, let us explain the problem and how to fix it. Saving documents in the correct place as word documents and PDF files will also be covered.

A Beginners Class for those who have little or no experience with the iPhone or iPad. We will be covering some of the settings necessary to get started and introduce you to the basics of running your device. Are you overwhelmed about what apps to add or how to add them? This is a continuation of the Beginners Class. For those of you who have a basic understanding of your devices, we will delve further into what the iPad and iPhone can do.  WINTER BIRD WATCHING IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

MONDAY, JAN 27, 2014 8:00 – 10:00 A.M. Eagle Lakes Community Park, 11565 Tamiami Trail East, Naples 34113 As one of the top ten birding sites in Southwest Florida, this park is home to more than 160 species of local and migrant birds. A 2.5-mile paved nature trail provides good views of birds and other wildlife. Expect to see wading birds and ducks as well as raptors, eagles, and warblers. Join us to enjoy the natural beauty of the marsh, spot and identify as many bird species as possible, learn names of local and migrant birds and observe their behavior. We’ll keep track and count how many species we find as well as use a spotting scope for dramatic close-up views of the birds. IKEBANA – SOGETSU DEMONSTRATION AND WORKSHOPS

DEMONSTRATION: THURSDAY, FEB 13, 2014 1:00 – 3:00 P.M. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement with its goal of being “friendship through flowers.” SOGETSU enables anyone to use Ikebana with any materials, anywhere, with amazing results, including the use of contemporary design. Learn the concepts of Ikebana such as harmony, balance, and unity. Emphasis is on both tradition and artistic expression. WORKSHOPS are tentatively scheduled for NOV 19 and DEC 17, 2013; JAN 14, FEB 18, and MAR 4, 2014. The workshops will offer an opportunity to learn more and have a hands-on experience. Location TBD. THURSDAY, 1:00 P.M. and other times as needed Beginning and returning students (individuals or small groups of 2–3 students) will start with a felt tip pen designed for calligraphy. During the class students will learn the differences between calligraphy and lettering. Students are asked to pick a calligraphy project (such as place cards or sayings). Paintstik design on T-shirt or scarf. Members will design on a colored shirt or scarf that they provide (bright colors or black work best). Supplies are provided. This project can be completed in one class session. Finished pieces are machine washable and permanent. No experience necessary. Class limited to 10 members Cost: $30

BATIK

Design and dye 3 scarves in a 4- day class (2 ½ hours per session). Members will design and dye 3 scarves. We will need 4 sessions to complete instruction. Supplies (waxes, dyes, use of tools, and stretchers) are included. Students will purchase and dry clean their own scarves. Finished dyed silk will be hand-washable. No experience necessary. CLAY: HANDBUILDING & RAKU TECHNIQUES

Designed for beginners and led by award-winning artist Richard W. Rosen, the five-week course teaches participants the history of raku, how various glazes affect the pot, and what the glazing process involves. Each member will create a personalized example of raku pottery to display in her home. Class size is limited to 7 participants. A TASTE OF RAKU

THURSDAY, 1:00 – 4:00 P.M.

In this three-hour workshop, a vessel is provided for each participant; there are discussions about the history of Raku as well as glazing and firing techniques. Each participant will go home with her finished glazed vase. The cost of the workshop is $48.

Following the film screening, the group will break into small discussion groups of 10-12 individuals to discuss questions raised by these films that are prepared for this educational series by Steve Brazina. Discussion group leaders will be selected for each weekly program and these individuals will report to the group as a whole regarding their individual group's discussion. This should be both a challenging and thought provoking program. Space is extremely limited, so sign up early.
