FEDERICA Born in Genova class ’92, proudly a Scorpio. Classical studies background, I then found my vocation in Design at Politecnico di Milano. After the bachelor degree in Interior Design, I switched to the design of the immaterial world: Service Design.I learnt the basis of Design Thinking, User understanding, Market research but also team working, leading and public speaking; eventually, most important, I researched and designed my first service models. After the Master Degree graduation, I entered the employment world. I worked for startups as well as digital agencies filling many different roles: Design Thinking lead facilitator, UX designer, Strategist. I believe my strength is being a “T-shaped” person: because of my broad field of expertise I usually act as the glue between different departments.

Service Design In this section I’m presenting the top three best project designed during PSSD Master Course in Politecnico di Milano: 1. XYZ Lab: a cultural hub that puts in touch high schoolers, artisans and digital manufacturers fablabs; an encounter between different generations; an exchange of knowledge, from craftsmanship 1.0 to 2.0; in order not only to preserve and transmit tradition but to evolve them. 2. GNAM!: an app game connected to Fitbit wearables that teaches kids nutrition and foster physical activity in a fun and engaging way; the platform act as the network between families, outdoor spaces/parks and dietitians. 3. Memory Lanes: ever wanted to visit a city traveling not only in the actual streets but also back in time? Memory Lanes is an app connected to different hotspots throughout a city that enables tourists to discover the history of a place through archive contents (photo, videos, testimonies).

G.N.A.M.! is a product service system project design during the Final Synthesis Lab - second year Master of Politecnico by me together with an international team formed by a Chinese, an English and an Italian girl . The main users are children 6-10 and their families. Childhood obesity is a growing problem in today’s society: G.N.A.M.! is specifically designed to help preventing and curing it. It is an investigatory game-based service that helps 6-10 years old children and their families to achieve an healthy nutrition and a correct physical activity, in a fun and engaging way. By providing kids with a personal Fitbit fitness tracker and turning them into detectives, this investigatory game engages and educates children by challenging them, together with their families, to solve cases in three steps: 1_outdoor exploration missions in specifically selected private parks/museums/cascine 2_online nutritional mini-games about nutrition tips and learnings 3_offline activities about nutrition to experiment together with their families.

Kids’ personal dashboard

G.N.A.M.! online platform is also an aid for parents: on their personal account, they can keep track of the achievements of their children, as well as finding a child specialist (nutritionist, psychologists and dietitians) nearby and the structures where to bring the children to play, and even organizing neighborhood based initiatives, such as pedibus, group of play, collective game activities. Service Design Vilnius, 2016

Memorylanes is a project developed during Experimental Lab in my Erasmus exchange in Vilnius. We were completely free to create our own brief and develop as many concepts as we wanted. After a review with the professor, the concept of city sightseeing as a local was the one chosen for further development. What if tourists could listen to the stories of the cities they’re visiting as told by the elderly? Memorylanes is a co-designed service by citizens for tourists. a travel across time, not only space. Experiential travel, also known as immersion travel, is a form of tourism in which people focus on experiencing a country, city or particular place by connecting to its history, people and culture. Keywords include; immersive, local, authentic, adventurous, active As soon as the tourist has arrived in a city included in Memorylanes itinerary, he will be informed about the existence of such app by the municipal Tourism Office. After having downloaded the app, they will have to turn on the bluetooth and select the city. They will be then located and suggested the closest “memory spots. Once arrived in those spots, an on-site iBeacon will send them a special push content about that specific place: a series of old pictures, audio recordings by elderly inhabitants, videos, testimonies. Moreover, around those place, the app will recommend them the best local shops, restaurants and museums to visit with a discount. Memorylanes splash page

TWO GREAT PROBLEM AREAS How different are our lives compared to our grandparents’ one? And from the next generations? Humanity has undergone a dramatic change in the decade after 2000, more than it had in the previous 50 years. Technology is entering our lives so much we are actually starting to merge with it. AI and Machine Learning, Robotics, VR, AR, IoT, Wearable Tech. In times when everything is changing, from human interactions to mobility, from communications to lifestyle, there is one fundamental thing that is still stuck to 100 years ago: Education. Are we preparing learners for the future or the past? A shift in paradigm is required. The educational model employed today is more than ever outdated, conventionalized and inadequate. The very logic of globalization requires that goods travel ever longer distances from producer to consumer. It pushes to a non-stop growth, leading to ecological destruction, spiritual poverty and, most of all, cultural loss, causing the depletion of social fabric. For this very reason, for decades now, artistic creative craftsmanship is been declining slowly and many crafts are endangered. How to preserve the uniqueness of local culture and values, without closing the world out?

OPPORTUNITY AREA Summing up, on the one hand we have the high schoolers who are compelled to an education system that is firm, obsolete and impersonal; on the other hand, we have the craftspeople, who have given up to the ignorance of people about the real value of craftsmanship and to the perspective of the extinction of their craft. What is the common denominator? Design Thinking is the solution. By designing workshops where the teenagers and the artisans can connect and even innovate tradition together. Craftspeople can tell their outlook on artisanship and teach some techniques to young people. High schoolers, can acquire new useful skills, learn about traditions and think and act creatively. The designated places where to make this kind of things happen are the FabLabs. Their culture is exactly that of openness, experimentation, team working and rapid prototyping, using digital fabrication. Inside a FabLab people freely exchange their know-how and get contaminated by others, in turn.

Design Thinking Design thinking is at the heart of my personal approach to any kind of challenge or project. I explored and applied Design Thinking principles in different fields: 1.

Creating a proprietary framework: I’ve been researching DT framework since university and, with trial and error throughout the time, I’ve developed a solid framework of Design Thinking for Digital Agencies, that keeps into consideration the fast pace of agencies.

2.

Planning and leading co-design workshops: I mentored more that 40 workshops (hackathons, bootcamps, co-design), both as mentor and as leader. I also planned the briefs, the activities, the timing, and tailored the templates each time for the output needed.

3.

Define the project guidelines: after the workshop is over, I usually elaborate the results, cluster them and trace on overview of the needs, the pain points, the journey maps and the areas of opportunity; those are the basis for the definition of the UX guidelines.

Clients I’ve dealt with include: Generali, Sara, Santander, Aeroporto di Torino, Acea, FEDERICA RANIERI | Service + UX +Designer FEDERICA RANIERI | Service UX Designer

Design Thinking

UX Design I always carry the design of User Experience design baring in mind Service Design Thinking approach. This means finding the right intersection between usability, strategic goals and tech feasibility; and keeping in mind who you are designing for and what the purpose is.

1.

Design Brief: it all starts with a confront with the strategic team that dictate the guidelines for development and the brief; they also hold the client’s point of view and the business objectives. After reference to the target are provided, some other research are made, both quantitative and qualitative.

2.

Information Architecture: having researched the target and defined the main user categories and their journey on the website, I begin to rationalize the content of the site, organizing everything in a sitemap; then, I define the navigation through flowcharts.

3.

Wireframing and prototyping: starting from lo-fi prototypes like sketch framing I get set by step to a more refined hi-fi version of wireframes; after a confrontation with the UI designer, the hi-fi layout completed with the UI and brought to life through rapid prototyping platforms.

Clients I’ve dealt with include: adidas, Recordati, Santander, Aeroporto di Torino.
