ODOS ZERVOUDAKI Urban regeneration in the historical center of Chania

Chania, like the other Cretan cities, is a perfect example of historical globalization. Since tourism is the main activity, the city’s energies have always focused on the preservation of archaeological sites and monumental buildings, neglecting the big potential that resides in the minor architecture spread throughout the historical center. Here is possible to trace buildings from different periods, from the Venetian dominion to the turkish one, cohexisting side by side with anonymous and vernacular architecture, whose styles are intertwined and create a folkloristic spontaneous landscape hidden in the alleys of the center of the city. With the urban expansion of the 1900s, some of these areas have been abandoned and today are often in states of urban and social decay. The entire country’s economic situation in the recent years was a further cause of disinterest in areas not directly profitable. The resulting scenario is ideal for an intervention of urban and social regeneration, starting from a small-scale, through the rethinking of Odos Zervoudaki, a typical στενό (arrow) located in the Old Town. The area, as a matter of fact, presents buildings belonging to different periods; the analysis showed that the urban tissue dates back to the Venetian period, becoming later the main turkish neighborhood. Most of the buildings are

in a state of decay and/or abandon in spite of the central position, and the user target is composed by few aged local residents. The project aims to improve urban and social conditions of the area, through different types of interventions, taking in consideration user requirements and existing situation. The main arrow axis maintains its residential function while the enhancement of public space and the integration of new activities act as a social condenser, establishing social cohesion and a better connection with the context. The in-fill allows the recovery of unused spaces, integrating the restoration and the renovation of the older buildings. New activities and collective spaces want to improve the economy and the daily social life, involving both locals and tourists. For all the existing buildings it is proposed a new interior distribution that optimizes the use of space, creating 3 tipologies that take as reference greek and turkish elements. The redevelopment of housing promotes the repopulation and aims to make the area suitable for new future users by encouraging social diversity. Odos Zervoudaki wants to be a prototype of urban and social regeneration, applicable to similar cases; hence the choice of simple local materials and traditional technologies.

KJU:B STUDIO

KJU:B is a 90 sqm studio designed to be a working space for four architects. The plan allows to have defined spaces for every different function (studio, meeting room, services), placed around the interior courtyard which allows lightning and at the same time defines the circulation.

THE SPINE

The project aims at developing an alternative tourist accomodation in Agioi Apostoloi, Chania, integrating the building with its natural surrounding landscape. The design starts from the existing buildings, that create a conceivable axis that continues as a straight pedestrian path on which functions and facilities are attached and connected. This main axis serves as a back-spine of the site’s circulation and connects both west and east side of the peninsula. The old building are partially preserved and used for the public functions of the area. The rooms, “ribs of the system, are located to west to gain the best view and light. The surrounding area with his typical mediterranean scrub, is integrated with paths and services in order to create a landscape natural park.

COMMON UNDERGROUND

During the workshop we had the opportunity to explore the alternative urban scenarios of the area of the Rock Salt Mine underneath the city of LoulÊ. In our proposal we want to connect the center of the city with its huge underground potential, re-using the unoccupied cells of the mine as rental spaces for different uses: recording studios, exhibition galleries, storages, workshops, yoga or ashtma therapy. In this way the underground void will attract new and local people and will increase the economy of Loulè, helping the regenaration of the abandoned spaces above the mine area.

READY-MADES by SOUTH The gallery of Agias Filotheis is a “hidden” space in the wider urban area of Plaka. Inside the “stoà” architectural shell, different activities belonging to different fields daily across each other, establishing the connections that link together this semi-public space. Our proposal wants to display the intimacy of the multi-faced stoà spaces, exhibiting a choosen object from each store and gallery workshop, giving them a new “out of context” use. The purpose of the proposal is to activate the stoà as a small temporary public space through small gestures, re-organizing the usual layout, creating the conditions under which the hidden “objects” will emerge on the surface. The gallery, thanks to the Urban pixels initiative organized by Archpoints, becomes a place to experience, wander, perceive.
