RED PRESS 2022 - ACADEMIC LETTER
When looking at a year in review, there is always key standout moments we can easily reminisce on. However, in 2022 there was definitely a golden thread that ran throughout FEDISA’s journey - grit.
KIM GUSH FEDISA ACADEMIC DIRECTOR
This year we found ourselves navigating a post-pandemic globe that clearly seemed to be trying to play catch-up. Workloads appeared larger than life, the consistent “peopling” became unbearable even for the biggest extrovert and skills digitally explored during the pandemic seemed overwhelming in person. Despite all of these, students and FEDISA grit our teeth
and beared with it. And look at the magic we have to show for it this year - we now fall under an international university umbrella, we have collaborated like no one has ever collaborated with industry before and created connections so invaluable our futures are infinite. And all because industry saw the perseverance FEDISA has to develop future thinking creatives, despite circumstance. Yes, with all these opportunities at our fingertips we feel somewhat bulletproof.
“ ” grit. Most of what I know, I’ve learned from falling and getting back up. The ground has taught me more about flight than the sky ever could.
Each and every individual at FEDISA persevered through passion, continued to get up through every fumble and cemented their future as a world-class creative through
Make magic!

FEDISA SELECTS HONORIS UNITED UNIVERSITIES FOR PAN AFRICAN EXPANSION
Honoris United Universities, Africa’s first and largest network of private higher education institutions, welcomed the pioneering FEDISA Fashion School, South Africa’s leading fashion and design institution, into its network in early January 2022.
ALLEN LEROUX FEDISA CEO
The addition of FEDISA illustrates Honoris’ continuous investment in the future of African talent by strengthening the Creative Arts, Fashion and Design vertical across the educational group. Joining the Honoris United Universities network creates a truly internationalized opportunity for FEDISA and all those associated with the institution.
“
FEDISA is now optimally positioned to make an even greater Pan-African impact on fashion employability and sustainable practices for our graduates.
The FEDISA Fashion School became the 15th university to join the network and its 77 thousand students. FEDISA’s inclusion in the Honoris United Universities not only contributes FEDISA’s amazing fashion programmes to the academic programmes now available
across Africa, but along with our partner institutions here in South Africa, Mancosa, Regent Business School and Red and Yellow, we now enjoy unrivalled collegial support and expanded opportunities for our students and staff alike. Already this year there has been the opportunity for FEDISA staff to present academic papers at the Honoris Academic Summit in Tunisia and we are currently in the process of identifying FEDISA alumni and their new business concepts to engage on an exchange programme with the Harvard School of
Business in the United States of America.
In addition, our 2022 FEDISA graduates will be the first students to benefit from the new FEDISA-CAREERSCONNECT platform driven by Graduway, the employment portal of the Honoris United Universities.
In this way we will bring our graduates together with a range of available employment opportunities, both locally and around the world. Thereby building even further on #thefedisadifference.

A NIGHT IN VOGUE - LIGHTS, CAMERA, FLASH!
Against the backdrop of the renowned red tower, the red carpet was rolled out, for FEDISA’s annual September Issue Fashion Flash – A Night in Vogue.
SHAZIA SALIE FEDISA JOURNALISM LECTURER
Drawing on the conventions of the corset, the night saw the second-year BA: Fashion Design students showcase their evening wear. From silks to tulles, each garment told an exquisite story of refined work and creativity. Not only were the designers tasked with creating showstopping pieces, but guests were also challenged to attend in their most redcarpet-worthy looks. FEDISA’ s Fashion Police were on full alert to decide on the best-dressed fashion victims, who then walked the runway before the winning guest was chosen.
Paying homage to Vogue, FEDISA’s media team, made up of the Diploma 2nd and 3rd Year students, welcomed guests with interactive interviews, to get the low down on who and what they were wearing.
“ ”
The interviews, which were a first for a FEDISA Fashion Flash event, were led by vibrant Diploma in Merchandising, Marketing, and Media students, who were not short of enthusiasm and fashion expertise.
The Press Wall served as a wonderful space wherein fashion enthusiasts could chat and engage about styling and trends.
The evening saw the stars come alive, both above and on the lawn, as the students and guests immersed themselves in the glitz and glamour. Combining the creativity of both FEDISA’s BA: Fashion Design and Diploma in Merchandising, Marketing, and Media students, emphasized the significance of collaboration within the world of fashion.

DENIM DREAMS - A DENIM CONCEPT
In collaboration with The Foschini Group (TFG), FEDISA 3rd year students were tasked with retelling the stories of denim, by drawing on traditional and new ways to create, style, and experience it.
SHAZIA SALIE FEDISA JOURNALISM LECTURER
The BA Fashion Design students designed and created a conceptual denim look.
TFG sponsored rolls of denim, providing our students with a good foundation on which to build their garment. Their support did not only stop there as students had the honour of engaging with TFG – Men’s Fashion Managing Director, Travell Rees. Rees took the time to visit the FEDISA campus, and chat to each student about their denim concept. His enthusiasm and expertise were greatly appreciated by the students and staff.
While the BA: Fashion Design
students worked on bringing their denim dreams to life, the Diploma in Retail students designed and executed conceptual window displays. Their displays were centred around sustainability, and it was brought to life through the use of the sponsored denim.
“Every element of the window display, besides the structure that it was in of course, had to be made out of denim.
TFG was happy enough to provide students with denim offcuts to be used in [our] displays. Much thought was given to produce an immersive experience as well as the sustainability of the displays. Besides denim, each design
had to incorporate an aspect of African inspiration. These were themes that [we] produced in [our] Trend Analysis Studies, that [we] then had to bring to life.
The window designs looked like they were created by professionals. It was clear that the students put their blood, sweat and tears into their creations.” – Diante Tablai, 3rd Year Diploma in Merchandising, Marketing, and Media student. Both BA and Diploma students also had the opportunity to showcase their work at the FEDISA ‘Concept Denim’ Flash, which was well-received by the TFG team.
At the end of the show, the TFG judging panel selected awards for the best collection and best window display. Hester Fourie won first place for her Denim Concept garment and Samantha Lambson, Kelly Bryce, Demi Tayla Felix, and Arina van Wyk won first place for their window display. Through thorough research and by applying their refined design techniques, students
were able to create garments and displays that drew on the conventions of denim, alongside their own denim narrative.
“A spectacular event for well-
deserving s t u d e n t s, a n d m o s t importantly, an evening to truly remember.” - Diante Tablai, 3rd Year Diploma in Merchandising, Marketing, and Media student.

FEDISA X MARKAM 2022
Men’s fashion today is more than just a simple white t-shirt or pair of outdated slacks, but colour, textures, and prints are now lighting up the Markham man’s wardrobe.
MARISCA BRINK FEDISA FASHION BUYING & SOURCING LECTURER
This year Markham collaborated with the FEDISA second-year BA Fashion design students to shine a spotlight on dopamine dressing and doped-up afro-modernism in menswear fashion.
The students had to develop a creative conceptualized look that can be commercially interpretable, however, the sky’s the limit with creativity as Markham sponsored off-cuts of phenomenal vibrant fabrics to bring the student’s ideas to life. If that wasn’t enough,
students had to leave their mark by designing a print and having it printed on the fabric of their choice (all sponsored by Markham, of course). So much creativity! Once the looks were created after weeks of development and long hours of sewing, students gathered around with nerves hanging in the air as judging day came around. Markham attended the style lab judging where they identified their top 3 looks as well as their overall conceptual design.
The night of glitz and glamour finally came together as the top 22 selected students had the incredible opportunity to send their looks down the runway at the Graduate Fashion Flash 2022. Creativity oozed off the runway and the passion the students had for this project was evident in their dopamine dressing looks. Heads turned as the winner Katinka van Heerden’s green coat blew the audience’s breath away leaving them wanting more (the best is yet to come for this aspiring designer).

FEDISA X K-WAY COLLABORATION 5
YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG
This year FEDISA and KWAY celebrated their 5th year of collaborating on this second-year project.
MARGARET OLWOCH FEDISA SANDTON CAMPUS DIRECTOR
Undoubtedly, this project is one of the highlights of every second-year student. Students arrive at FEDISA with the dream of one day starting their own business, and this collaboration allows them to determine if they have what it takes. The project begins with the students being divided into groups, setting them up for the invaluable lesson that teamwork makes the dream work.
The brain wheels started turning when the students were tasked to develop a unique brand identity while still adhering to the aesthetic and consumer market of the KWAY brand.
With extensive research, the students developed brands that could tap into a new market, focusing on a specific sport. Each year it’s always
interesting to see which sport is the favourite amongst the group, and this year we saw the students take an interest in skateboarding. I think we have the Olympics to thank! The outcome of this project always surprises the students as they are amazed at how you can turn nothing into something. The students also grew newfound respect for brands as they have now had a taste of how much goes into developing a business. This project is a game changer for the students and prepares them for what awaits them in the industry.
[MMXXI] would never have existed if we didn’t understand the concept of what the youth out there needed and by getting the voices of students and their interpretations of what our brand should or could look like started sparking ideas of “ Hey, maybe the question is not the product it’s the price” or “ Hey, maybe it’s not the price but the colour or too little prints or too many”. Maybe it’s the fit. Like traditionally I wouldn’t do a cropped puffer jacket because there’s no function to it, but then finding a way of making that function and then we were able to do that so it was pushing the boundaries a bit to be more relevant.

FEDISA X K-WAY 2022 - FASHION FLASH
FEDISA is recognised as one of South Africa’s leading creative institutions, so it is no surprise that design students may already be prepped with the tools for success by their second year.
MEGAN DOWNING THIRD YEAR DIPLOMA STUDENT
Partnerships with brands such as Cape Union Mart illustrate the endless possibilities of employment and networking. Through the ongoing collaboration, K-WAY, the sub-brand within Cape Union Mart, has become familiar to students.
The K-WAY x FEDISA Fashion Flash was held on the 28th of July at both the Sandton and Cape Town Campuses. The event was hosted by the CEO of FEDISA, Allen Leroux, who introduced the collaboration and the recent Honoris partnership that FEDISA underwent. Mr. Leroux was joined by guest speaker and Cape Union Mart Head of Design, Susan Searle, who introduced K-WAY’s latest collection while commending the talent, creativity, and innovation of the FEDISA second-year students.
The Cape Town Fashion Flash took place on the renowned third-floor outdoor runway where the usual wintery July evenings turned out to have beautiful clear skies with a slight chill, allowing guests to put on their most stylish K-WAY garments. The DJ set the mood, creating a positive, uplifting, and enjoyable space. The event was also recorded on Instagram live allowing future students, parents, and remote fashion lovers to watch from the comfort of their homes. Collections that were
showcased incorporated new and fresh ideas on sustainability, change, style, and accessibility. Young designers introduced a new take on the famous K-WAY shell jacket and other silhouettes that consumers have come to know and love.
Detachable sleeves and legs creating modular and versatile styles, gilets, quilted patterns, colour blocking, and fabric experimentation were all themes and ideas that were
introduced in a playful, creative, and beautifully constructed way. Bright colours that play into the recent dopamine dressing trends as well as the deep reds and winter neutrals that were seen on international runways, showcased the well-researched collections and industry readiness of students, helping the Cape Union Mart group gauge the talent and potential of young professionals. As a highly successful, fun, and impressive event, the KWAY X FEDISA collaboration accurately showcased FEDISA’s student’s potential and forecasts where fashion may be in the next few years.
[We’ve learnt to] push the boundaries a little bit more, almost using FEDISA from our side as a pool for exploring ideas. What we are working on, hopefully in the next year or two, is to try and involve FEDISA in taking one of the ideas that come out of the year and put that into our store with the designer or with the team so it’s not necessarily us grasping ideas from everywhere, but to go ,“Cool we like your concept and we are going to put it to life with your name on it”, So that is the next step.

FEDISA X CATRICE - MESMERISING MASTERPIECES
For some, it is an armour; for others, self-expression. Makeup is an art showcasing colour and artistry using the face as a palette for experimentation.
SAFIYYAH BHORAT FEDISA STYLING & DESIGN LECTURER
The FEDISA x Catrice: Copy Cat Makeup collaboration continues for its third year running, with First Year Diploma Students from both Cape Town and Sandton campuses getting in on the action. The students were thrilled to get the chance to impress Catrice by showcasing their abilities and talent in their Beauty Editorials through Fantasy makeup. The themes for this year, provided by FEDISA, aimed to push the student’s boundaries to create mesmerising masterpieces. The themes included Iconic Anime, Moons that Orbit Jupiter and Retro Poolside. The students were appreciative of the prerecorded digital tutorials and make-up lessons provided for by Catrice. These tutorials helped the students understand the thought process of a makeup artist and methods of approaching a creative brief. The collaboration itself encouraged creativity and innovation in our students to create a number of captivating looks for Catrice.
The Catrice team was blown away by the work produced by our students and found it difficult to select just 1 winner from each category! They graciously provided the winners with feedback. “We love the overall finish of the look. It is well executed and of good quality. The makeup clearly takes inspiration from the theme. We love the creative use of tape for the graphic lines with a good use of colour,” said Catrice of the winner of the Iconic Anime theme, Candice Lock. For the winner of the Moons that Orbit Jupiter theme, Sinenhlanhla Malinga, Catrice complimented her on her use of colour and very well executed makeup. They loved the different dimensions of colour playing off the colours of the moons. They were impressed with quality of the makeup and her achievement of overall glowy skin.
Yukta Singh won the Retro Poolside theme, where Catrice commended her for her impeccable makeup, great use of colour and good quality picture. They loved the use
of props and background to emphasize the overall theme. The students were thoroughly grateful to be a part of an industry collaboration and are fortunate to be able to witness industry experts flourish in their mastery. Catrice Cosmetics took it a step further and
awarded our FEDISA x Catrice winners with beautifully curated gift boxes filled with an array of Catrice products.
The FEDISA team and winners are grateful for Catrice’s time and efforts in this and we hope to experience more multifaceted collaborations in the future!

DRAPING TO DRESSING - SA FASHION WEEK HIGHLIGHTS!
During FEDISA’s collaboration with SA Fashion Week this past October, our students were afforded the opportunity to partake in various industry-related activities.
MARIZE BOLTON FEDISA STYLING & FBS LECTURER
As young creatives, this exposure is invaluable to their development ahead of their entry into the fashion industry.
Ten FEDISA students had the opportunity to be backstage dressers at the SA Fashion Week A/W collections, that took place at Mall of Africa in Midrand, on the 20th, 21st, and 22nd of October. They were involved in different duties such as assisting designers to unpack their collections, assisted with fittings, checked that the correct garments, accessories, and, shoes were with the correct model, and
steamed all the collections before
More excitement arose, as the students received the opportunity to work in collaboration with SA Fashion Week on Monday the 24th of October.
A draping design competition was held at Mall of Africa alongside the SA Fashion Week trade show.
Two sessions took place, where 12 students and two groups of 6 were given 1.5 meters of fabric, a quarter scale mannequin, pins, scissors, and one hour to create an Avant Garde concept design. The results were judged according to creativity, quality, and completeness.
The first session took place at 12 PM and the second one at 3 PM.
Each session’s winner received an amazing prize to the value of R10 000 from Woolworths and Mall of Africa as well as recognition across SA Fashion Week’s social media channels.
The talented winners were Nokuphila Mthembu and Rethabile Mokoatle. Collaboration continued as the second-year BA students worked on a collaborative menswear project with Loxion Kulca, which was also one of the shows that they dressed at SA Fashion Week.
This one-on-one experience allowed the students to have personal insight into the brand, as they worked on their collection looks that they presented to the Loxion Kulca team for judging on the 9th of November 2022.

DROME - The Future of Fashion
SASKIA GUSSENHOVEN FIRST YEAR DIPLOMA STUDENT
On the 25th of October, FEDISA students were given a one-of-a-kind opportunity, when DROMe visited us for an in-depth discussion on fashion, innovation, and creation.
Designed by Creative Director Marianna Rosati, DROMe is an Italian fashion brand that is shaping the future of fashion. The audience, made up of FEDISA and Elizabeth Galloway students, as well as staff, were completely immersed in Rosati’s energy and passion. Exploring the contrast between a punk rebellious attitude and gleaming glam, DROMe’s collections are made up of feminine and masculine elements that blend together to create a redefined
liberation and an untamed self-expression. “The creative mind is supposed to solve the difficult solutions,” says Rosati when talking about sustainability in the fashion industry. She implements this solution through the creation of her ‘upcycled’ FW21/22 collection. She sourced worn down, second hand garments and gave them new life by mending and upcycling them to become something new. Having already done a workshop at a women’s prison, where women were able to dress in DROMe’s latest collection, this project allowed women to get in touch with the parts of themselves, that felt neglected. Rosati sees more humanitarian collaborations in the near future.
FEDISA x Loxion Kulća
This year, FEDISA Sandton Style Lab 2022 will pay tribute to African small economies inspired by the movement towards a renewed yearning for joy, wellness, redefining masculinity, as well as exploring sustainable resources and practices. The theme is“Taking Back the Street”. Loxion Kulća is an iconic proudly South African brand born in Johannesburg. The term Loxion (lock-shin or location) is used to describe townships and represents the African Urban state of mind (pride, success & tangible freedom) while nurturing Kulća (culture). Born
in the early 1980’s there have been multiple influences in the brand direction, such as the downtown art scene, travel, skateboarding, graffiti, kwaito, reggae, punk, hip hop as well as the emerging amapiano and club culture. Honouring the vision of late co-founder Mzwandile Nzimande, Loxion Kulća is available in over 1000 retail stores today, with the latest of these being a collaboration with Dunns. Originating from Soweto street culture the resident creative director Ole Ledimo plans to take back even more of the fashion sphere (South African Fashion Week, 2022).
South African Menswear Week
ROUSSEAU THIRD YEAR DIPLOMA STUDENT
Situated in the bustling heart of Claremont across the popular Cavendish Square Mall in Cape Town’s Southern suburbs, the South African Menswear Week fashion show took place in an industrial-styled building highlighted by vivid red and blue lights. A simple layout that featured an essential step-and-repeat red carpet, an area for music, mingling, and of course, champagne. As well as rows of white seats alongside the runway. Tall screens presented partnerships, sponsors, and collection and
brand titles. While heavy rain poured (resulting in some sopping outfits and drenched hairdos, an unfortunate result for the writer of this article), security opened the door and welcomed chilly guests to the event, as kind hosts greeted and checked names on the list. While light background music echoed through the event, the atmosphere was vibrant, exciting, and filled with chatter, laughs, and the click of photographers’ cameras. The essence of the event is of course, fashion, as guests paraded their finest dress and expressed their unique
styles which only enhanced the atmosphere of Menswear Week. Mutual connectivity was felt through the art of styling, as all eyes watched in curiosity and awe as more and more guests arrived. Attending a fashion event such as South African Menswear Week will always be an experience beyond dreams. A student’s inner child and fashion career will never forget the experience of being immersed in creativity, surrounded by like-minded peers and colleagues, in an environment with excellent organization. With so many Eurocentric influences regarding fashion, these shows offered an incredible insight into how, why, and what young South African designers create for.
