We are amazed by the past year – so much has been accomplished. Our distribution of food increased by 32 percent since last year, meaning 5,377,792 more meals were distributed to families in need. Food came from every conceivable source, including farmers/growers, manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, restaurants and resorts, catering companies and community food drives. Volunteers are helping at record levels; we received a total of 35,115 hours this past year. These numbers show how dynamic and deep-rooted our food and volunteer resources are within the Central Florida community. You, and your neighbors, stopped hunger in its tracks for many in 2011. We are amazed and shocked for a different, more troubling, reason – recent hunger studies show an increase in the number of children in need. In Central Florida now, roughly one in four children are food insecure. The remainder are senior citizens, working poor, homeless people, unemployed and the disabled. A year ago, our partner network of programs reached 732,000 people. These numbers remind us: We have a lot of work to do as the economy struggles to come back. We are amazed and proud to report that we continue to help more and more people, while remaining financially solid and debt-free. We work hard to be worthy stewards of the community’s generosity. Efficiency in accomplishing our mission is so important. Outside sources such as Charity Navigator affirm our efforts by awarding their highest four-star rating to Second Harvest. We are amazed by the incredible effort of our 500 partner agencies that literally feed thousands of people each day. Their passion is at the heart of our inspiration. We are amazed and genuinely appreciate you taking the time to spend a few minutes reviewing this report. We trust that you will find it energizing and full of hope. For those of you who already support the work we do in the community, thank you. And, for those of you who may be newly discovering our work, please contact us, as it will be our pleasure to speak with you regarding how you can join the effort to fight hunger in Central Florida.
Making a difference, one meal at a time. 2 >
On behalf of the thousands of people who benefit from your generosity, thank you. You are amazing.

incredible partners, Second Harvest Food Bank couldn’t begin to have such a powerful — and critically needed — impact on hunger.
our Branches • Collectively in fiscal 2010/2011, our organization distributed 32,830,936 pounds of food in six counties – which include Brevard, Volusia, Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole. • In fiscal year 2010/2011, the Volusia Branch provided 4,259,717 pounds of food to more than 85 non-profit organizations. • Our Brevard Branch distributed 4,528,568 pounds of food to more than 77 non-profit organizations during fiscal year 2010/2011.

COMMUNITY FOOD DRIVES
Products donated by manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, growers and others are distributed to emergency food pantries, shelters and other types of agencies serving clients in need. This program distributed 20,062,465 pounds of nutritious food in fiscal year 2010/2011.
An amazing 1,154,164 pounds of nonperishable grocery products were collected in fiscal 2010/2011 through our community food drives, including: • Boy Scouts of America/Scouting for Food • National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive • WESH News Channel 2’s “Share Your Christmas” Food Drive • CANstruction • Local church, school and workplace drives
KIDS CAFE At 13 after-school sites in three counties, 168,124 prepared or catered meals were served in fiscal 2010/2011. On average, 1,250 children were served daily. In total, more than 1 million meals have been served since the program’s inception in 1993.
SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM During 51 operational days last summer – a time when children in needy areas lack access to school lunch programs – 69,768 meals were served at 24 sites in four counties, reflecting an increase of 62 percent over the previous year. Through a grant from Johnson & Johnson, we were also able to provide the children with 13,750 take-home, shelf-stable food packs for the weekends. And, for the first time, we were able to serve Osceola County. Since the program commenced in 2008, Second Harvest Food Bank has provided more than 162,000 summer meals.
TEFAP DISTRIBUTION The Florida Department of Agriculture awarded distribution contracts for Orange, Seminole, Lake, Brevard, Volusia and Marion counties to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida for its distribution program for government food commodities. In fiscal year 2010/2011, a total of 8,973,364 pounds of these wholesome products were made available to Central Floridians in need.
SECOND HELPINGS This prepared/perishable food program distributed 1,339,780 pounds of food in fiscal 2010/2011 to agencies that provide onsite meals for senior citizens, shelters, soup kitchens and non-profit kids’ programs.
GROCERY ALLIANCE HI-FIVE KIDS PACK PROGRAM Last year, 51,791 shelf-stable food packs were provided to needy children at 20 elementary schools and 25 community sites. These packs are meant to help bridge the nutritional gap that exists during weekends, when children lack access to school cafeterias. Since 2006, more than 143,173 packs have been distributed.
With more than 300 retail locations throughout Central Florida, this vast food recovery program brought in 10,558,792 pounds of food in 2010/ 2011 – more than a 100% increase over the previous year. Each day, participating retailers gather and prepare unsalable, but perfectly consumable products, for donation. Donations are collected via our fleet of refrigerated vehicles
Monday through Friday, and are brought back to the food bank, where they are inspected and distributed to our feeding partners. The Grocery Alliance product mix – which includes meat, produce, dairy, bakery and dry goods – offers a wide range of nutritious foods. In mid 2011, the program began yielding more than 1 million pounds of donated product per month.

GENERAL FOOD DISTRIBUTION

building solutions to hunger Today in Central Florida, hundreds of thousands of children, seniors and families are experiencing hardship due to record unemployment, home foreclosures and the tightening of credit. And, the number one problem caused by the current economic situation is hunger. Last year, nearly one in five of our neighbors – 732,000 people – could not afford to buy enough food. More than 500 non-profit feeding partners in Second Harvest’s service area continue to face historic demands for food. Even as the community’s economic situation begins to improve, an enormous gap remains between those who need food and the amount available. The hunger relief system must expand to meet this need. It’s estimated that to fully meet the demand, Second Harvest’s annual distribution would have to double. But the ability of SHFB to continue moving forward in its mission to alleviate hunger is now severely limited by current facilities and infrastructure.
With the investment and help of our community, Second Harvest will be able to provide a greatly expanded and more efficient food delivery system to tens of thousands of people in need every week.
WHY BUILD NEW VS. RENOVATE? For nearly two years, a volunteer/ staff committee – along with CNL Commercial Real Estate Services – examined facilities and vacant land in a targeted geographic area. Even when retrofitted or remodeled, no existing properties were found that could adequately meet our needs. The lowering price of building materials, contractor fees and other costs due to the economy helped to make new construction a feasible option. Using a cost-per-square-foot comparison, we found that the costs of ground-up construction were not significantly different from purchasing and retrofitting an existing facility. After intensive number crunching and discussion, it was determined that building new would provide the Food Bank with exactly the features it needs, along with the energy efficiency required to operate as costeffectively as possible in the future.

Benefits Connection helps to capture a portion of the millions of unclaimed federal dollars for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly Food Stamps, in Central Florida. Designed to help people overcome the challenges associated with claiming these dollars, the program assists those who either lack access to a computer or do not possess the skills to navigate an online application. Due to a general lack of awareness regarding these benefits, many qualified candidates simply do not know where to go to obtain information and assistance.

*In June 2009, Second Harvest Food Bank received a Federal Demonstration Project grant – one of two in the United States – which allows our specialists to perform the final interview for applicants. This relieves the pressure DCF faces in returning calls and has resulted in a much higher approval rate for our cases.
