Developing more holistic and county-specific solutions to hunger in the Central Florida region.

Uncharted Waters This past year, Second Harvest Food Bank has entered uncharted waters; never would we have realized what we were going to face in terms of the enormous need for food. Thousands of Central Floridians experienced the same issue during these tough economic times. We discovered that we served 732,000 different people during the course of a year … a 152% increase from the last four years. That equates into approximately 20% of our total population needing food assistance … an almost surreal number to comprehend. When you consider that nearly half are children, it becomes even more disturbing. Fortunately, with community support coming from all angles, we have been able to provide more food to people than ever before in our 27-year history. Our distribution is now beyond disaster relief levels and last year totaled enough food for 17 million meals. All the while, we did this with great efficiency; 96.2 cents of every donated dollar goes directly to feeding people. Our general distribution of food and all of our programs have performed at record levels. Thankfully, we have been able to reach many more people. The past year showed us an unwelcome new phenomenon. For the first time, we had prior financial donors come to us needing emergency food themselves. Who would’ve thought? We cannot thank the community enough for their unprecedented support and the heroic day-to-day work of the partner feeding programs across six counties. We remain committed to leveraging every donated dollar and volunteer hour. Our latest audit shows that for every dollar donated, we distribute up to $9 worth of groceries. This is a welcome multiplier effect that’s required to overcome the waves in these uncharted waters. Please take a few minutes to scan our annual report and to discover the incredible depth and breadth of our impact in the community. Thank you for being part of the solution to a very serious problem. Every can of food and every box of cereal makes a difference.

Since 1997, the Volusia Branch of the Second Harvest Food Bank has been providing food to more than 81 non-profit organizations serving people in need. In fiscal year 2009/2010, the Volusia Branch provided 3,281,258 pounds of food. Founded in 2000, the Brevard Branch distributed 2,900,221 pounds of food to more than 84 nonprofit organizations during fiscal year 2009/2010. Collectively in fiscal 2009/2010, our organization distributed 24,764,248 pounds of food.

Volunteers 8,541 volunteers contributed 32,711 hours – the equivalent of more than 16 full-time staff members. Without this incredible human resource, Second Harvest Food Bank could not begin to have the impact on hunger that our community needs. T WO

TEFAP Distribution

Products donated by manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, growers and others are distributed to emergency food pantries, shelters and other types of agencies serving needy clients. This program distributed 14,774,880 pounds of nutritious food in fiscal 2009/2010.

The Florida Department of Agriculture awarded distribution contracts for Orange, Seminole, Lake, Brevard, Volusia and Marion counties to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida for its distribution program of government food commodities. In fiscal year 2009/2010, a total of 7,357,406 pounds of these wholesome products were made available to Central Floridians in need.

Kids CafĂŠ At 13 after-school sites in 3 counties, 164,155 prepared or catered meals were served in fiscal 2009/2010. This reflects a 12% increase over the previous year. An average of 910 children were served daily.

Summer Food Program During 51 operational days, while children in needy areas lacked access to school lunch programs, 43,188 meals were served at 17 sites in Orange County this past summer, reflecting an increase of 9% over last year. Through a grant from ConAgra, we were also able to provide the children with 15,773 take-home, shelf-stable food packs for the weekends.

Hi-Five Kids Pack Program 31,245 shelf-stable food packs were provided to needy children at 18 elementary schools last year. These packs are designed to help bridge the nutritional gap that exists during weekends, when children lack access to school cafeterias.

Community Food Drives An amazing 1,227,100 pounds of non-perishable grocery products were collected in fiscal 2009/2010 through our community food drives: Boy Scouts of America/Scouting for Food National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive WESH News Channel 2 Share Your Christmas CANstruction Local church, school and workplace drives

Second Helpings This prepared and perishable food program collected and distributed 1,404,862 pounds of food in fiscal 2009/2010 to agencies that provide onsite meals for senior citizens, shelters, soup kitchens and non-profit kids programs.

Food Distribution

ADEPT Since the inception of the Agency Development, Education and Partnership Training (ADEPT) program in 2006, nearly 2,000 staff and volunteers from our six-county span of partner agencies have attended over 200 classes.

Grocery Alliance Unsalable but perfectly consumable perishable and non-perishable food products are collected via refrigerated vehicles Monday-Friday from over 170 different retail store locations throughout Central Florida. This new food rescue program brought in 4,798,230 pounds of food in 2009/2010, and provides access to nutritious high-quality foods like fresh produce, meat and dairy items that are otherwise difficult to obtain.

Benefits Connection Benefits Connection is designed to help capture a portion of the millions of unclaimed federal dollars for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly Food Stamps, in Central Florida. Designed to help people overcome the challenges associated with claiming these dollars, we help those who either lack access to a computer or do not possess the skills to navigate an online application. Due to a general lack of awareness regarding these benefits, many qualified candidates simply do not know where to go to obtain information and assistance. We strive to educate the public and reduce the stigma associated with receiving public assistance. In order to maximize claims, our team of Outreach Specialists provide assistance with online benefit applications and DCF document submittals, as well as help candidates complete the interviews required by the Food Assistance Program*. By offering advice and support at a variety of convenient locations, we can successfully extend our reach and better facilitate the food assistance process. Since its inception, the Benefits Connection program has secured over $20 million in food stamp benefits for Central Floridians. In addition to food stamp benefits, our specialists are also able to sign clients up for Medicaid and Cash Assistance, and provide referrals to a network of collaborating agencies. *On June 2009, a Federal Demonstration Project was granted, one of two in the United States, which allows our specialists to perform the final interview for applicants. This relieves the pressure DCF faces in returning calls. In addition, this has resulted in a much higher approval rate for our cases.
