PUJA KSHATRIYA

ART FOR HEART SAKE

Puja has always been transfixed by the meticulous functioning of the complex human body. This fascination drew her towards portraiture and the mastery of narrating stories through faces; allowing her viewers to identify with her works. She redefined the confines of her work when she gradually evolved her

muse from humans to nature and later started experimenting with colours in place of her traditional monochromatic approach. She is of the strong belief that an individual holds the power to transform their life, by simply altering their perception - Constructing and Deconstructing.

BLUE MOUNTAINS 2 (2016)

Acrylic on Canvas

36 inches x 36 inches

Estimate: ₹ 420,000

From The Artist

My work has mostly been focused on  exploring the human conditions and our rich inner lives. In this painting, I have extended this idea to nature which can be perceived as a vibrant living thing with it’s different moods, it evolves through seasons, topography and the changing light of the day. Just as the human mind is ever changing, so is nature. The floating forms which extend from one panel to another, suggest a similar transition between nature’s many moods. At times jarring and violent, otherwise seamless and peaceful.

Artist: Puja Kshatriya

The inspiration behind this painting is the ancient art of mosaic. Assembled from diverse locations, small shards of glass or tiles when put together create a completely new picture. Similarly, our unique and different experiences through the journey of our life, play an important role - molding us into the person we are. It determines the way we interact, respond & react; defining and completing us.

The Moods of Humans.

Artist: C.D. Mistry

I used to observe different expressions and moods of the human face. It gave me the idea and inspiration to do the portraits with creativity, in search of something out of the ordinary. Most artists approach portraits with curves and rounded structures. Hence, I chose to experiment on my creative portraits with a cubic style. The next challenge I faced was to use black acrylic on textured paper, normally it is difficult to give depth and three-dimension in black and white. All the strokes, shades and lines were done with a dry brush to control the tones in black acrylic. Creative Portrait 30 and Creative Portrait 24 are a few such experiments of my series.

In Speak Sweet Collection, you are invited to observe the subject closely, to gaze into her eyes and study her face and form. In many ways, the painting embodies the essence of the Expressionist style; the subject visibly vibrates, contorts, shifts, pushes, and pulls, providing you with a vision of the inner torment of the sitter.

Artist: C.D. Mistry

Painterly rhythms and swirling forms within the arrangement of the figures have been created in order to convey elements of strength, intelligence, and melancholy. Through such intimate and personalized interpretations, the rejection of Impressionistic optical observation has been epitomized in favour of an emotionally laden representation that appeals to the heart, rather than the mind. The work in Speak Sweet 15 and Speak Sweet 27 depicts the very same.

KASHMIRI KHOSA

MAESTRO MASTERCLASS

Kashmiri Khosa has spent most of his professional life in Delhi, but his roots lie deep in the pristine valleys of Dharamshala. Although he hails from a family of well-known artists, he had to face his own trials and sail through the highs and lows of the art industry himself, to became the talented maestro that he is today. Along with being an artist, he is determined to

broaden his intellectual horizon by excelling in multiple artistic contemporaries like poetry, literature and theatre. This passion for learning has directed him on the path he walks on today, which is to dedicate his time to understand ancient scripts or Upanishads and later translate his impressions and wisdom into the visual language of art.

Inspired from ancient Indian texts saying, each and every moment of life is destined and decided. Your life goes on like a boat according to your Karmas and nothing is in your hands. I have tried to interpret this painting. But from my point of view a painting should be felt more than what it should mean.

In the 1960’s, the Soviet Union encountered a new threat, a large number of American submarines were spotted off its coastline. They had the capacity of surfacing, launching a nuclear strike, disappearing into the vast depths of the ocean. The main problem was that the Russian Navy didn’t have enough warships and anti-submarine warfare(ASW) aeroplanes to keep a track on all of them. Nikita Sergeyerich Khruschev, the chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Societ Union during that time was open for ideas to solve this breach on the sovereignity of the Soviets. The Victor-class nuclear-powered attack submarine was one such idea. It really showed the Americans what the Soviets were capable of. The pride of its navy, these submarines were built for the task of attacking American ballistic missile submarines. Stronger and faster, with a range cruise missile and rocket torpedoes, this submarine truly portrayed the Soviet Union’s Iron Fist. This sketch of a fictitious - alternative to the Victor-class stresses on an elaborate tail-design. It is a conceptual situation that the tail of the V.K. can make it more robust, making it a base for a nuclear strike.

Alexander von Humboldt II has been sailing the high seas since 2011. Like its predecessor Alexander von Humboldt, Alex-2 is a civilian square rigger offering tall ship voyages for everyone, regardless of previous experience. Alexander von Humboldt II has been built with a traditional barque rigg. That means the fore and main mast carry square sails while the stern most, the mizzen mast, carries gaff sails. While the rigging resembles that of a windjammer built 150 years ago, the safety and rescue equipment of Alexander von Humboldt II is absolutely up to date. Radar, radio and satellite communication, electronic charts, life rafts, two high speed dinghys and many things more make her a modern ship and easy to navigate.

The Imperial I-class Star Destroyer was a model of Imperial-class Star Destroyer in the service of the Imperial Navy. A wedge-shaped capital ship, it is bristled with weapons emplacements, assault troops, boarding craft, and TIE line star-fighters. In the era of the Galactic Empire, its command bridge was staffed by the finest crewmen in the navy. At first, Star Destroyers were deployed to sectors and systems caught in the aftermath of the Clone Wars, where they would crush any signs of sedition. During the Galactic Civil War the Destroyer’s role changed to hunting down high value Rebel targets and bases. They fought in notable battles such as the Battle of Hoth and the Battle of Endor. The Imperial II-class Star Destroyer was a derivative of the Imperial I-class.

What does the word GTO really mean? These are the three most famous letters ever to be worn by an automobile. It stands for “Gran Turismo Omologato,” in Italian. It refers to a grand - touring (GT) car recognized for competition. The GT cars were introduced by automobile manufacturers like Enzo Ferrari, in an age when cars were being bought by young people. They wanted glamour in their cars, appeal in their colours. So Ferrari started making them, paving the way for other upcoming GT automobile manufacturers, he showed the world what the word “Ferrari” really meant by introducing - Ferrari 250 GTO. With a glossy “Rosso Corsa”, Racing Red body colour, this car became every automobile collectors dream.

BRIDE (1993)

From The Artist

Colours are of course of primary interest to an artist and Arpita was no exception in this regard. Solid bands of primary colours with subtle variations to delineate the contours or to convey depth, gave unique quality to her paintings. She was not afraid to use bold and unusual contrasts, this added richness and vigour to her compositions. It also showed her extraordinary courage.

The ‘Gossip’ series is painted in a lighthearted vein, depicting the intimate sharing of secrets that only women seem to indulge in. Perhaps this is the only bit of entertainment these women get. Maybe it is no more than sharing some juicy tit-bit of news about a neighbor, but the women seem to obviously enjoy every bit of the conversation. Arpita’s sympathetic portrayal of family bonds is a pointer to her own personality: her belief in positive relationships, her faith and trust in human nature.

FLIGHT (2001)

Print on Canvas

29 inches x 25 inches approx.

Estimate: ₹ 8,300

Artist: Arpita Bhattacharya

There is a sinuous beauty in Arpita’s paintings of the Flight series. The swans and the female figures are both equally important in telling the story behind the painting. There is a strange bond between Arpita’s bird and maiden: as if the bird is leading the maiden to a place of secret enchantment, or to a safe haven. In this painting, the background is composed of ribbons of colour that seem to float and shimmer in waves, as if denoting a sea of light. The white swans are painted with the same undulating strokes, as if they too are floating upon that luminous sea. But the female figure is a complete contrast—strong and purposeful, she is ready for battle. She will neither float aimlessly, nor give in to a self—indulgent quest for petty personal gain. She is ready to take the challenge, and like a female counterpart of Atlas, lift the earth upon her shoulders.

This set of pictures, the Blue Girls, is the perfect portrayal of young girls on the threshold of adulthood, painted when Arpita was at a tender age herself. A young girl reading a letter - her first love letter?

- threading a needle, dreaming as she goes about her chores, lost in her own world of enchantment! How beautifully Arpita has depicted a maiden’s moods, using little more than delicate fingers, arched eyebrows and dreaming eyes to define the mood. Arpita’s Blue Girls steal our hearts with their sweetness and grace.

Our Beloved Granny

Emma Webster, better known as Granny, is a Warner Bros. Cartoons character created by Friz Freleng, best known from Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies animated shorts of the 1950s and 1960s.

She is the owner of Tweety (and more often than not, Sylvester and Hector). Her voice was first provided by Bea Benaderet from 1950 through 1955, then by June Foray for almost 60 years.

Granny is a good-natured widow who is extremely protective of her beloved canary, Tweety. Granny's overprotectiveness becomes apparent whenever Tweety is threatened, usually by Sylvester. Although having the appearance of a kindly old woman, Granny has demonstrated her cleverness in many cartoons.

At least until the mid-1950s, Granny is depicted as an elderly spinster who wears spectacles, a gray bun and a late 19thcentury-like schoolmarm dress; other old fashioned characteristics include her mode of transportation (usually, a Ford Model T or a horse and buggy) and her inability to relate to present fads (such as her telling Tweety she's about to try on a new "bikini bathing suit," which turns out to be a full one-piece outfit from the turn-of-the-20th century).

The toy-making industry in Seiffen is roughly 300 years old and still going strong.

SPLENDID SEIFFEN

SEIFFEN

The Räuchermann of The Ore Mountain

The history of wooden toymaking in the Ore Mountains is closely bound to regional circumstances. The Ore Mountains are located in Central Europe on the border between Germany and the Czech Republic. For many centuries it was a countryside in which the local population eked out a hard existence from the land. Long and harsh winters restricted agriculture; in addition the region had very poor communications. With the onset of ore mining a new line of commerce developed, but the hard labour and high risks involved meant that it was only work for young and strong men. Many were injured or died as a result of accidents. The miners rose early in the morning whilst it was still dark in order to go to work and did not return home again until late in the evening after dark. From those times comes a custom that has survived to the present day, the practice of placing lights in the window. These lights were intended to show the miners the safe way back to the homes of their families.

Many of Germany’s traditional handcrafted wooded toys and decorations come from Seiffen.

It was not long before the winnings of silver ore fell in many parts of the mountains and numerous pits had to close. This hardship forced its inhabitants to look for other work and, thanks to abundance of timber in the region, the manufacture of wooden toys became an important secondary source of income. Entire families were engaged in wooden toymaking, especially in the harsh winters. Child labour in conditions of poor lighting and equipment was the rule rather than the exception. The children often had to work more than 12 hours a day. Families developed a high degree of specialisation. For example,

an experienced turner would be working on turning animal shapes (Reifendrehen), another man carved the animal figures out of it and another family took over the painting and the manufacture of small boxes. Earnings from the individual steps in the process were very low. Production was usually bought by travelling merchants who used their position without mercy, to force down the prices. The majority of these products was taken to the toy markets of Nuremberg and redistributed from there. The formation of associations and cooperatives (such as Dregeno) was in order to ensure a minimum level of income.

Production is concentrated today in the toymaking village of Seiffen and its surrounding area in the middle of the so-called “German Christmas Land” as the Ore Mountains are called. A great variety of products has developed, but they are clearly associated with the Ore Mountains and go by the concept of Ore Mountain folk art. They include many typical wooden Ore Mountain products such as Christmas pyramids, wooden Räuchermann incense smokers, nutcrackers, wooden figures (Christmas Angels, miners, turned animals, etc.), Christmas mountain scenes (Weihnachtsberge) and Ore Mountain candle arches.

Presently, many of Germany’s traditional handcrafted wooded toys and decorations come from Seiffen. There, specially trained craftspeople work to preserve the centuries-old techniques and pass them on to the next generation. Seiffen itself looks like it belongs in a Christmas tale. All meandering lanes and halftimbered buildings, it is situated in a valley surrounded by forested hills. It’s the quintessential German village, a place where time appears to have stood still. But it’s also home to a thriving technical college that teaches the tricks of the toy-making trade to the next generation.

A DYING TRADE

Students learn techniques such as wood turning, and how to chisel angels, nutcrackers and so-called “smoking men” out of timber. Seiffen’s Christmas decorations are world famous, and some of the local techniques are unknown elsewhere in the world.

“These painted wooden dolls were given to children hundreds of years ago,” said Isabell Goehler. “They wear skirts that are hollow inside and fitted with little wooden globes. They’re very typical of the Ore Mountains region.”

The toy-making industry in Seiffen is roughly 300 years old and still going

strong. The local college accepts some 20 trainees a year, aged between 16 and 26. Competition for admission is tough - even though sleepy Seiffen is hardly the sort of place young people would normally want to spend much time in. Moreover, after a hard week’s training, they’re often required to spend their weekends woodcarving in public workshops for the benefit of the tourists.

But, as Goehler said, toy making requires a lot of patience. She and her colleagues spend hours diligently piecing together Lilliputian dolls’ heads, arms and torsos, painting miniature animals and affixing tiny wooden gingerbread to equally tiny wooden market stands.

“People are amazed that we can spend so long painting a few details on a minuscule doll’s head,” she explains. “But we love our craft - it’s a love many of us have had since we were children.”

Her colleagues Sandra Schubert and Sebastian Weinrich would agree. They both describe toy making as a job that never gets boring: It involves sawing, shaping, woodturning, carving, carpentry and painting. They also enjoy the fact that they’re a dying breed - few outside of Seiffen are masters of the craft.

“Visitors to Seiffen go around marveling at what they see,” said another colleague, Jenny Wagner. “That’s when we realize that what we’re doing is something special.”

The Ulmer Keramik (UK) manufacture, based in Ulm , later NeuUlm, began producing items such as tableware, tiles and promotional items from ceramic in 1947. The plant was closed in 1991. The manufactory was founded by Heinz Saur (November 6, 1916 in Essen, November 9, 1962 in NeuUlm) and entered on June 7, 1946 in the Ulm municipal business directory. After reconstruction and expansion of Fort Prittwitz in Ulm, the production of tableware in redbrown shards was started there in early 1947. On December 19, 1947, UK was entered in the commercial register.

From 1947/1948 mainly hand-painted majolica was made. According to the Chamber of

Industry and Commerce, UK had 25 employees on January 13, 1948, mostly displaced persons from Silesia and Bohemia. Among them was the head of painting, Baroness Sybille von Rotkirch, who had studied art and painting in Berlin. As early as April 1948, the Municipal Trade Office had 50 to 60 employees. After the currency reform in 1948, there were first sales difficulties. After this crisis, the company went up again. In 1952 it took over the machine park of WMF Geislingen. In 1954, 200 employees were employed, 60 artists painted up to 1,500 of the approx. 130 items with different decors every day. The motifs were popular: fauna and flora, traditional costumes, landscapes around the Mediterranean, from

Paris, the Orient and the Far East. Facades and interior walls of wellknown breweries, restaurants and cafés were extensively decorated with hand-painted tiles. Almost everything was made for everyday use and to beautify the apartment. In 1954, the UK was one of the largest majolica factories in Germany with 15 modern kilns (electric spiral ovens). 40% of the production was exported to Europe, the USA and Canada. For the first time, a German ceramic manufacturer reached the world market suppliers Netherlands and Italy.

In 1956, the UK expanded its capacity to 17 kilns. 260 people produced 6,000 to 10,000 articles a day; the UK was the largest majolica factory in the Federal Republic. From the mid-1950s, major companies had promotional items made up to 50,000 pieces. The decoration of mass production was only possible on this scale with screen printing. The designs for this came from Ernst Konrad, who stayed at the UK from apprenticeship to retirement. Hand painting was retained for smaller quantities.

UK had to expand due to operational reasons. Since this was not possible in Ulm, construction

was carried out in Neu-Ulm. The new plant was opened on July 11, 1959. After Saurs death on November 9, 1962, the authorized officer Albin Blechschmidt, the former general manager Rudolf Mezger and Hans Forstner from Neu-Ulm - a war comrade Saurs - inherited the company in equal parts. The company was converted to a limited partnership on August 30, 1963. Mezger retired in 1964 and the company’s headquarters were relocated to Neu-Ulm. In the period from 1977 to the late 1980s, sales halved. In 1985 Forstner also left the company, his son Johannes Forstner became manager. In the same year, Blechschmidt sold his share to Dr. Erich Merckle from Ulm. Together with Johannes Forstner, he took over the management. At that time there were 55 employees in the UK. Due to the cyclical decline in promotional items and imports from Asia, sales declined sharply. In 1990 the management decided to give up the business. A clearance sale took place from March 1 to March 28, 1991. On March 31, 1991, the business ended. The majority of the operating equipment was sold to ElsterKeramik GmbH in Elsterwerda .

von Humboldt, in full Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander, Freiherr (baron) von Humboldt, was born on September 14, 1769, in Berlin, Prussia which is now in Germany. He is a German naturalist and explorer who has played a major role in the classical period of physical geography and biogeography, areas of science which are now included in the Earth sciences and ecology. With his book Kosmos he made a valuable contribution to the popularisation of science. Due to his endless contributions to science, The Humboldt Current off the west coast of South America was originally named after him and is now known as the Peru Current.

After his futile attempts in studying economics at the University of Frankfurt an der Oder he resided in Berlin for a year, where he obtained some training in the field of engineering

but soon developed a passionate interest in botany. Humboldt soon dreamed of journeys to more exotic lands. From 1789 to 1790, Alexander studied at the School of Mines in Freiberg, Saxony. There, after a morning spent underground in the mines, he attended classes for five or six hours in the afternoon and in the evening scoured the country for plants. In 1799, Humboldt set sail from Marseille making his way to Central and South America, accompanied by the French botanist Aimé Bonpland, whom he had met in Paris, then the liveliest scientific centre in Europe. The years from 1804 to 1827, Humboldt devoted to the publication of data that he accumulated on his South American expedition.

Humboldt passed the last 30 years of his life in Berlin. Once a year he traveled to Paris, where he renewed his contacts with the French scientists, and breathed the cosmopolitan air he so sadly missed in Berlin.

ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT I

Today’s barque “Alexander von Humboldt” was first built in 1906 at the Bremen Werft AG “Weser” to serve as a lightship under the name “Reserve Sonderburg.” The name referred to its function as a reserve fire ship, which was based in Sonderburg on the island of Alsen, in those times belonging to the German Empire. The ship was equipped with a lamppost and beacon, serving in changing positions as a floating navigation mark for shipping.

Post the completion of its challenging missions in the North and Baltic Seas, the ship was given a permanent position in front of the entrance to the Bay of Kiel and the Northeast Sea Canal. She anchored there for two decades under the name “Kiel” serving as a lightship. After a permanent lighthouse in Kiel was built in 1967, the ship went on to pursue her unsteady journey as a reserve lightship.

In the 80s the requirement of the manned lightships had come to a halt. The ship was decommissioned from its position, and on the initiative of Captain Manfred Hövener with the help of many volunteers, was converted from 1986 to 1988 into a sail training ship, and was given the

name “Alexander von Humboldt.”

The hull was given its typical green colour for the first time, a colour traditionally associated with the famous Bremerhaven Rickmers sailors, which later, together with the green sails, became the trademark of the barque. The first green set of sails were sewn at Hinsch & Ruhland in Glückstadt, one of the last few sailmakers that still specialise in equipping large square sails.

Since her baptism as “Alexander von Humboldt”, the ship has covered more than 500,000 nautical miles, has sailed 12 times across the Atlantic, has circled the infamous Cape Horn twice and has given countless young people the opportunity to learn traditional seamanship. It is also believed that Neptune, the ruler of all seas, was also on board a few times with his followers to cleanse all “dust-born” from dirt and to baptise them according to the equatorial rite.

The ship has been retired from duty since 2011 and is a comfortable hotel and catering ship that, despite the modern equipment, has lost none of its traditional charm.

Alexander von Humboldt II has been one with the wind and the high seas since 2011. Similar to its predecessor Alexander von Humboldt, Alex-II as is called by the crew is a civilian squarerigger offering tall ship voyages to all, regardless of previous experience.

Alexander von Humboldt II has been built with a traditional barque rigg. This implies that the fore and main mast carry square sails while the sternmost and the mizzen mast, carries gaff sails; in total, the ship is driven by 24 sails. On account of favourable wind conditions, she runs up to 14 knots, in case of no wind at all a 750 horsepower engine helps her reach the next port in time.

While the rigging resembles that of a windjammer built 150 years ago, the safety and rescue equipment of Alexander von Humboldt II are impeccably up to date. Radar, radio and satellite communication, electronic charts, life rafts, two high speed dinghies and many more things make her a modern ship and easy to navigate.

Alex-2 is owned and operated by Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training, German Sail Training Foundation, based in the barque’s homeport Bremerhaven, a non-profit, charitable organisation. It aims to provide traditional high seas sailing for people of all ages, but especially for young men and women between the age of 15 and 25.
