MRS. ARCHANA GOENKA We began the journey of our school ensuring the development of exclusive resources, teaching faculty and collaborations with other institutions for best progress to be achieved for our children. We are glad to share that our school recognises each child’s individual strengths and potentials to contribute towards best learning. We are keen to facilitate meaningful and joyous learning that is customized for every learner through our education.

MR. SANDEEP GOENKA As rightly said by Nelson Mandela - “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” We wish to align ourselves to the same. Children today have an unquenchable thirst to seek knowledge that cannot be satisfied by traditional methods of imparting education like rote learning and passive listening. Keeping in mind the paradigm shifts in the field of education, children at CPGIS are provided with opportunities and situations that facilitate them to exhibit their hidden potential to the fullest. An infrastructure conforming to the global standards that helps blossom an individual’s talent to edify the young learners keeping in view a synchronous growth of their body, mind and soul. Following the dictum by Gandhiji, “Be the change you wish to see” - I have ensured an institution that will enable you and your ward to enroll yourself in my vision. Let us move ahead together, making this a reality and soaring towards the pinnacle of excellence.

Rashmi Gupta PRINCIPAL

Dear Students, Parents and Faculty, C P Goenka International School has successfully completed another academic year of 2018-19. This year was a roller-coaster ride of joy, achievements and activities. We have a list of young achievers in our school who made us proud. Celebrations this year were in full swing and our children performed extremely well in Academics. School took few remarkable new initiatives this year and we have also enrolled students in many external competitions where they left a mark. This year was the year of many firsts: 1. Student council elections: For the first time students were given a taste of Indian Constitution and the process of elections. Right from nomination to campaigning, voting through secret ballot box and counting of votes under camera, every step of electing leaders was followed. Elected members took oath and were presented with badges and satchel. Leaders were explained their roles and responsibilities. Elected council members took no time in taking up their duties seriously. Throughout the year their contribution in the school was remarkable. Students were felicitated on annual gathering with letters of appreciation. 2. Best way to learn is by doing: For better understanding of working for Cambridge, we hosted Cambridge training for three subjects which in turn was again a huge success. 3. Appreciation of good work is a positive motivation: To motivate our teachers and students, we initiated Monthly Best Class competition and Monthly Best teacher Competition, it helped them understand their duties and responsibilities and become more responsible. 4. Newspaper in Education: NIE Subscription bought us a lot of excitement, enthusiasm

5 and workshops for children. 5. Monthly newsletter: We shared updates with parents through Monthly newsletter to keep them posted on school’s achievements and programs. This gave a platform to our budding writers and poets to express their views. We were able to showcase the achievements of our students. 6. Educational Trip: CPGIS Pune’s first Educational Trip to Ooty was a huge success and parents gave us remarkable feedback. 7. MUN: In today’s world, people who can speak well and express thoughts in public forums stand out. To give them a feel of the same we hosted Metanoia MUN in our new campus. Our students got a first-hand experience not only of various committees but also learnt organising skills. 8. Street Play: Nukad Natak giving a social message on Diwali was put on Youtube. 9. Women’s Day: Our mother was felicitated by their children on Woman’s day as messages were sent to our mommies on WhatsApp. 10. CSR Activities: C P Goenka international school believes in connecting people to their roots, Indian culture. We encourage students to take CSR activities. SIDDHARTH MATHKAR Grade 9 This year, Siddharth Mathkar, our school president attended his fourth Model United Nations conference. His confidence and motive remained the same: “Think simple”. He has been walking in line with this ever since and never doubted the power of simplicity. This time, as usual, he walked in with literally four pages of research, and his solution making skills assisted him in winning the best delegate, over other contestants who had 100 page documents. He says, ”I enjoy creating solutions and thinking simple. Despite being the delegate of Iran, which is a third-world country and stands an inch tall in the UN, compared to other Superpowers and P5 nations, this didn’t stop him from openly challenging and successfully silencing each one of them. He aims to attend each MUN in the future, not in the hopes of winning an award, but in the aspirations of gaining confidence, bravado, and essential public speaking skills. We encourage all our kids to take this priceless opportunity to follow in his footsteps and create a new tomorrow.

FOR TEACHERS AARUSH MANAPURE,

GRADE 9

Mother gives us birth but a teacher is the one who gives us worth. They are no less than an engineer or architect. Teachers are the beacon who empower us to make the wind favourable our journey and help us set sail. They are the foundations of the building of our knowledge which will aways stand firmly in the storms of doubts and winds of confusion. From teaching to abcd to write essays, from 123 to trigonometry, the teachers never lost faith in us instead they helped us improve. Love is hidden behind their scolding and blessings behind their praises. You might never know where your teacher’s words would influence you. Thank You.

A WHISPER FROM BEHIND THE CURTAIN, ON TEACHERS DAY; AN EXCLUSIVE REPORT ON ITS PLANNING AND INCIDENCES THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAMME.

The secondary students of CPGIS had a huge hand in putting up a show for their beloved teachers. Be it setting up surprises, or writing cute messages for their teachers, they stopped at no hurdle to brighten their second mothers’ day. On 5th September 2018, the citizens of our learning society celebrated the spirit and dedication of the teachers, the latter best known as Teachers Day. The students were made aware of their roles before the auspicious day and kept their lips sealed to the highest of temptation until the day arrived. They were excited to keep this celebration a surprize for the teachers, as they practiced behind closed doors, covered their windows with charts and some even spoke in code language, just to reserve the best smiles of anticipation and exhilaration for their teachers on the ultimate day. The Student Council organised the event as they assigned various roles and responsibilities to each of the students. The secondary sections were to take over the assigned teachers’ classes in the primary sections while maintaining their daily lesson plan. They coordinated the event, along with the generous help of the PTA members, making sure everything was running smoothly and according to plan. The Student Council was amazingly present at every class during the zero periods, to assist

their younger peers. “Anything for our School!”, they commanded; with broad smiles on each of their faces, assuring the supervisors of fulfilling their tremendous duties and responsibilities. The students from the higher grades also showcased their talents in the form of free-hearted dance, lively song; and a few even cracked witty jokes and riddles to lighten the mood. The day started off with the welcoming of the teachers done by the student council and soon after the teachers were taken to different stalls setup by students. They varied from games to a few snacks, never failing to please the teachers before the main events started. After a while, the Cultural Programmes started, and students from many grades prepared dances of both Indian and western dance forms, while few students created a quiz for the teachers to participate in, to which the teachers were awarded for their winnings. After the marvellous performance by the students, the events section of the

day started. The teachers were called to perform a ramp walk by displaying their confidence, style, and grace with the help of props and music. The teachers were awarded on their efforts after the ramp walk and that concluded the events of the day. After a tiring set of events, the teachers were sent to the dining hall for a hightea. The members of the PTA committee had specially created mouth-watering dishes for the teachers to enjoy. From the delicious savoury snacks to the delightful sweet treats, the PTA members made sure that the teachers were content before they left. Subsequently, the teachers bid adieu to the students, PTA committee, and staff and thanked them for hosting a wonderful day. It was a commemoration to remember and an unforgettable one too.

ABOUT TEACHER’S DAY As we all know that our teachers play a great and most important role in our lives. They help us to improve our knowledge, skill level, confidence as well as they shape us in the right shape to get success. So, we too have some responsibilities towards our loyal teachers. We all as an obedient student need to do a heartily welcome and say them wishful thanks for their selfless service of teachings all through the life as well as shaping the life of various students. Teacher’s day, which is celebrated once a year on 5th of September is the great chance for us to spend a day for them and say thanks. They Guide Us... They Support Us... They Inspire Us... They Teach Us... Today is the day to thank them and say Happy Teacher’s Day!

TWO FRIENDS MANYA KAPOOR,

GRADE 2

Once upon a time there were two friends named Misha and Maya. 31-10-2018 was a special day for Misha. It was her birthday! Maya was going to Misha’s birthday party. Maya bought a gift for her. It was a doll she thought of wrapping the doll in Misha’s favourite colour. Misha’s favourite colour was pink. Misha also like wearing pink scarf. When Maya started finding pink wrapper, there was no pink wrapper. Her mother told her to wrap it in the pink scarf. “Ya Ya Ya,” Maya shouted and said, “on her birthday Misha would like it very much.”

METANOIA MUN

After 24 hours of intense negotiation with 20 other crazy high school students, I remember the exact phrase I told my mom when I set foot home, “ I want to do this for the rest of my life.” The moments of crisis and conflict, of negotiation and leadership – these were the moments I longed for... sitting in a boardroom striking a secret deal... the moments that made history. This MUN was certainly the most competitive yet enriching MUN we’ve had. The fact that it was held in our own school definitely encouraged us to take part and boosted our confidence by a mile. I would vouch for the fact that these two days are the greatest two days of a child’s experiences ever to be gained. Be it because of the debate, the knowledge, the formality, the diplomacy, the diverse cultures, the collaboration skills, the food, or the friends made; this is one event that any child wouldn’t want to miss. I thank our principal for giving us this opportunity and certainly say that it has changed me, from an under confident average; to a loud, expressive speaker, who always has a smile on his lips, and a lion in his heart.

POETRY UNDER A TREE REA PILLAI,

GRADE 8

During literature class, Dhaarna ma’am had our class (8th graders) sit under a tree while she read the poem of ‘How Do I Love Thee?’. The whole class assembled under a tree on the ground floor as we read the beautifully written poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning to her husband Robert Browning. The whole experience was wonderful, the open space helped me concentrate better as there were lack of distractions and the cool breeze just added to the experience. The essence of the nature helped us in reminiscing Elizabeth Barrett Browning and understand the feelings inside her while she wrote the poem. Overall, the whole experience was unforgettable and something I would like to do again.

LITERATURE CLASS

On Friday, we had done a literature class in the open air. We were studying a poem written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning: ‘How Do I Love Thee?’ (Sonnet 43). We studied poetry under a tree and it was a great and unique experience. It was the first literature class we did out of doors and it was rejuvenating. The cool air made us fresh and alert and we could grasp the meaning of the poem more easily. The class was enjoyable, marvelous and fantastic and we would like more classes like these. REA’S SPEECH REA PILLAI,

GRADE 8

We, the students of CP Goenka International School had the wonderful privilege of attending CIMUN 2018. Being a part of this amazing experience helped us get a taste of what real competition is like while socializing and helping us gain new acquaintances along the way. The debates helped us voice our opinions and increase our confidence. The debate gave us the right mix of diplomacy, getting to know each other and problemsolving. It taught us individually, it brought out our hidden talents we didn’t know we had before and gave us an independence of thoughts. It helped us keep up to date with the current affairs around the world rather than ignoring the announcements and reports of great importance. Our experience at CIMUN 2018 was an inexplicable one and we look forward to many such events in the near future.

AS STATED BY OSCAR WILDE, “EXPERIENCE IS ONE THING YOU CAN’T GET FOR NOTHING.”

This line remained a jumble of random insignificant words to me until I attended DTMUN 2017 and got the essence of confident debating and completely understood Wilde’s standpoint. Without getting the unparalleled exposure that I reluctantly agreed to, my endless quest for multitudinous knowledge and unyielding confidence of speech would have retained its status of having being unfulfilled. In the beginning, it was worlds apart from my expectations. Being the only participant from my school for that session, I put myself under a great deal of excruciating self-expectation; not

of winning any awards, but to improve my public speaking skills and feel real competition. After 3 exhausting days of tireless debate, I returned home with a knowing smile on my face, fully aware of the bewildering change in my awareness, elocution and even disposition to a certain extent. This art of speaking, though dreaded by the majority, is now holy to me. This is what pushed me to take part in not only every MUN, but any opportunity to express my views,

to make a change in the world. When most talk of empowering the youth generation, they envision the world at their disposal. After anyone has had such a moving experience, they leave no stone unturned to maintain a selfsustained, harmonious society. Siddharth Mathkar Grade 9 CPGIS Student Council President

DROPS OF RAIN REA PILLAI,

GRADE 8

The drops of rain fall down the window panes, As the plants bow down with gratitude, The farmer’s prayers have removed the complaints, Renewing shrubs no more found nor viewed, But the misjudged rain could be more a bane, Than one has ever imagined, As these drops have caused grievances and pain, Of families with lives disheartened, The Drops of sorrow... of happiness within, The Drops of loss and gain, Have made our worlds churn and spin, With the beginning of the monsoon rains, Cries and laughter heard through every pain, While the drops of rain fall down my windowpane.

YOU THOUGHT I WASN’T LOOKING When you thought I wasn’t looking, You displayed my first report, and I was excited to do another. When you thought I wasn’t looking, You gave me a sticker, and I knew that little things were special. When you thought I wasn’t looking, You fed a stray dog, and I thought it was good to be kind to animals. When you thought I wasn’t looking, You put your arm around me, and I felt loved. When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw tears come from your eyes, And I learned that some things hurt - but it’s all right to cry. When you thought I wasn’t looking, You smiled, and it made me want to look beautiful too. When you thought I wasn’t looking, You cared, and I wanted to be everything I could. When you thought I wasn’t looking - I looked...... And wanted to thank you, for all those things you did, When you thought I wasn’t looking.

Time is not a worry for those who care not for money, not doing jobs during days sunny, instead eating kebab-n-curry, But those who do hurry for jobs, don’t have a second for their honey, nor for the little and her bunny, to teach her about any slurry. So they leave her with the special being, who keeps her attention in the world fast and reveal her inner talents guaranteeing which will help her adjust in the world vast. With patience is the TEACHER overseeing to remove her from her cast.

THE WONDERS OF SATAN Satan overlooked her evil creation, The filth of learning had been coerced, The helpless novices faced utter devastation, They believed their fate had been cursed Of no crime they had committed, They were sentenced to the trials of homework, They were oblivious to the fact that they had benefitted From the laborious toil of Satan’s groundwork Years passed in hate of “Our Satan”, Who grew more caring every passing day, It was when they had no more ways to straighten, When she revealed her ultimate play She showed them her work, Her unselfish blueprints of brilliant space, She always had a motherly smirk, Behind the raging devil’s face

It’s more than a city, more like a home Buildings and skyscrapers, oh what a sight With the busy streets, you won’t feel alone Plus the rhyme scheme is spot on Staring at the cheerful lights as they glow taxi cars racing by, with headlights on walking by millions of people as you go roaming this gorgeous city until dawn. Cafes and shops everywhere you will see It’s New York, a city that will never sleep A city that is full of energy Filled with responsibilities to keep Keeping the city alive isn’t a big game Here in Pune, I want to feel the same.

TEACHER’S SPECIAL We have monks, We have gurus, We have teachers; They say, they explain and they go They say, Life is not a straight line. They explain, How to make it a straight line? They pass their knowledge, And go to others. Who seek knowledge and no more! Even the rich would not be rich, If he had no, Teacher to guide. A Teacher is like a battery, Who charges everyone! But never loses; It’s own power! We enter the class, to learn and grow. But, what I have gained the most, Is my; TEACHER’S LOVE!

Aaryan Singh, Grade 7

SUMMER VIDHI RAIKWAR,

GRADE 8

The breezy air of May Moves here and there The seashore with trails One day will be erased The summer is always too short And sometimes too hot The blazing sun reflecting in the water And making it hotter and hotter The bright stars at night Is a beautiful sight Sails, boats sandwiched between the blue sea and blue sky Gives you a beutiful memory The juicy fruit you eat Your heart skips a beat

LIFE Life is all around us! It is beneath, your very feet. It’s above the sea level, and the humungous mountains. The wind also contains life, as tiny as an atom. Everywhere you roam, Everything you see, Life exists within it. The trees are alive, healthy and growing. The birds are healthy and alive, Chirping and flying in freedom. I could go on like this; FOEVER! Because life exists; EVERYWHERE!!

Aaryan Singh, Grade 7

FRIENDSHIP NAVHYA CHODANKAR,

GRADE 8

Your friendship means so much to me, you lift me up when I am down, Through my pain it is clear to see that you spread kindness all around. You lift me when I am down, with graceful words you dry my tears You make me smile instead of frown Our frienship will last my years With graceful words you dry my tears, in everything your all You chase way unwanted fears, You’re there to catch me if I fall I thank the Lord on bended knees your friendship means so much to me!

TO MY MOM

To me you mean more than words can describe, To me you are worth more than all that I own, Your name and mine on a tree I inscribe, Memories of you to the world I’ve shown. I love you much more than anyone has, I love you much more than love itself can, For you I pray every time I’m in mass, That you’ll be okay, your life has just begun. You are young, full of life, don’t say that you are not, You shine like a flame lit up for the night, But now the sun comes, so violent and hot, You don’t need to worry, you’ll be alright. I’ll say you are unique, your fire still lives, You gave me all, now to you back I’ll give.

TEACHER’S POEM

Teacher is... Someone who is wise... Who cares about the students and wears no disguise. But is honest and open and shares from the heart. Not just lessons from books, but life were you are. A teacher takes time to help and tutor, With english or math or on a computer. It’s our ma’am who’s patient, even in stress. Who never gives less than the very best! Not that I was the perfect student, But you were the perfect teacher for me! Dear teacher, thanks for making us what we are today. Happy Teacher’s Day.

That’s why an aquarium provides a superb alternative for school’s Field trip – one that enhances the learning of the theme which children are learning in the school . An aquarium offers extensive visual stimulation that’s perfect for children’s cognitive development, making it a great choice for a day out where they can further develop their vocabulary through identification. Here at CP Goenka’s Spring Buds International School, our children got the opportunity to learn about various fish species that they saw, and later also discussed the similarities and differences. We can’t fully appreciate the magnitude of life under the sea unless we see it in person and we can’t stress enough how important it is to teach children that there is a world beyond their neighbourhood that they have yet to explore. Luckily for them, the Aquarium is home too many creatures from the deep, many of which children have never seen before. This Field Trip which was planned for Pre-Primary session not only gave children first opportunity to see the creatures’ first-hand, but they also learn about their habitats and behaviours.

94

ART Students of grade 1 B created posters to show what the weather is like. Children are often scared of thunderstorms, but they love jumping in puddles of water and looking at rainbows after a storm ends. Making observations about the weather and discussing climate are great ways to learn about science, especially since weather is something children can easily relate to and understand. Whether it’s clear and sunny or rainy and windy outside, weather and climate affect children’s lives every day. Providing children with weather information also gives us the opportunity to talk with children about the importance of being alert when there’s a chance of bad weather and knowing what to do if a severe storm or natural disaster occurs. They also made a family tree to understand the family members and their importance.

Dear Dharna ma’am Today it’s my birthday, I was unwell today missed mom but at school you were so loving and caring it made me feel so much better. It was so special when you came downstairs to just see that I reach safely. It’s not only today everyday at school you are always there when I feel I need a smiling support. I joined this new school but was deep scared inside feeling I will be so lonely and everything would be so different. You from first day made me feel comfortable and helped me to get along with my classmates, its tough but I am trying hard. You believed and supported me when I felt the whole wide world won’t ever understand what I am struggling with. Ma’am do you know magic that all my problems seem so small when I come and tell you. I like to help you in small tasks. I know sometimes I do wrong things I am trying not to... Today I wish to thank God for making you my class teacher. Dear Madam, “Karthik joined in 1st Grade at CPGIS Pune in 2012. We joined him in Karate classes during the same year as extracurricular activity within our housing society. In last Six years, Karthik won several medals at national level Karate championships and currently holding Brown Belt 2. CPGIS Pune school management played a pivot role in Karthik’s achievements by showcasing his accomplishments in school’s assembly, annual days and publishing in school’s journal. Karthik gained tremendous confidence when he was asked to take self-defence classes for other students. This encouragement ignited more fire in Karthik and aided him in understanding the importance of the talent he was owning. Also, it thought him balancing his school activities v/s Karate and to continue having grip on both, simultaneously.” Kind Regards, Narasimha Murthy

117 Dear Principal ma’am, I must tell you that you have been blessed with some very talented and passionate teachers in the school. I am talking about Ms. Dharna mam... I really would request you to please please promote many more such teachers in the school. She is so very knowledgeable and is passionate to spread that knowledge to her kids. It’s very rare to find such teachers in this age and time... Please please extend my heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Dharna for committing herself to make sure our kids performed well in today’s times of India debate... Our kids didn’t win any award for whatever reasons... but I guess the popular vote went to them... I guess more than 50% of the time during the free discussion was our team talking ... came up with very beautiful points and put them forth with authority and humility... To me this is an amazing growth in kids and not the certificate that they would have got.... In fact, two of the fellow competitors who won the award said this to me (I will not mention their name to respect privacy) ...”Aunty I feel Siddharth was very good and should have deserved this” ... the other one said “Siddharth... dude you are too good with your points... I couldn’t think of a way to give you rebuttal”... Well these competitions are to give our kids a forum to boost their confidence and come up as a future leader... and that’s exactly what today’s event has done... I really feel the way Ms. Dharna was mentoring kids was amazing... I would truly request you to promote Debate as one of the extra-curricular activities for each and every child in the school making the best use of knowledge and skills of teachers like Ms. Dharna ... I think our kids will be benefited immensely by that thanks for all your support as always thanks, and regards Gayatri

“Changing Parths school was easy for us as parents but for him it was a tough thing to change habits and learning techniques which he was following since past 5 years. He is changing and will improve in all aspects as our school is providing him help. Hoping for the best.” Regards Pallavi

Dear Ma’am, I truly want to thank you all for having Siddharth attend CIMUN. Siddharth has come back with such a rich experience that it’s hard for me to put it in words. He said “I made very good points and spoke very well” ... he also said “I am not disappointed I didn’t get best representative because I knew I was... and other people came up to me to say that they were surprised that I didn’t get recognition” … As a matter of fact, he says I want to attend all MUNs in and around and it is soul satisfying... he said “I want to represent India in UN someday”… I think we all together have achieved what we want from our students. Thanks a lot Nadia mam and Alisha mam for taking such good care of kids and encouraging them… truly appreciate it. Thanks and Regards, Gayatri
