SIMPLY SILVER A collection of knitting patterns featuring SilverSpun: an American made cotton yarn spun with pure silver.

THE ORIGINS OF SILVERSPUN American made is what it’s all about here at Feel Good Yarn Company®. SilverSpun yarn is produced using only American sourced fibers and spun entirely at NC State. In December 2012, Laurie Gonyea, our founder & owner, contacted the folks at North Carolina State University’s College of Textiles to ask if she could come down and talk to them about her idea for a new yarn. They agreed, and the week before Christmas Laurie drove from Washington DC to Raleigh to meet with the Spun Yarn Lab Manager, Tim Pleasants. Laurie told him she wanted to produce a cotton yarn spun with pure silver. At first he looked at her as if she had three heads, but after some gentle arm twisting he agreed to give it a try. A number of prototypes were produced and refined until they came up with the exact yarn that Laurie had in mind. It had the strength of cotton with the feel of cashmere. She called it SilverSpun. In April 2013 SilverSpun was unveiled to the public at the Carolina Fiber Festival. The response was incredible and with that...Feel Good Yarn Company® was born. Start your SilverSpun journey with us and order yarn.

BOONE

By Katherine Vaughn

Cabled socks are lovely, and ribbed socks always fit so nicely, but it can be a challenge to pair the two techniques. In this toe-up pattern, a simple cable twist pattern flows up the sides of the sock from toe to cuff while ribbing fills in the space on the instep and sole. The pattern is maintained over the short-row heel. In all ways this sock is centered on comfort; the thick cotton/silver/Lycra of SilverSpun yarn cushions and coddles the feet, a slight gusset keeps the heel from binding, and the short leg allows for comfort even in the warmest months. These are quick, happy socks, with just a twist of cable along the sides!

Elegant in their simplicity, these fingerless gloves are knit straight, with no interruptions to the flow of the stitch pattern. Both the bit of Lycra in the SilverSpun yarn and the stretch of the stitch pattern itself allow them to glide smoothly over the curves of the wrist and the palm. The stitch pattern is easy to remember and the thumb is an extended buttonhole, making this a great pattern for advanced beginners.

KNITTING WITH SILVERSPUN The silver content in SilverSpun makes it therapeutic and conductive. Silver inhibits the growth of a number of bacteria, including those that cause odor, has excellent thermal properties, is nontoxic and is perfect for those suffering from diabetes, arthritis and sensitive skin. Silver is also an excellent conductive agent thus allowing smartphone or tablet touch screen use while wearing gloves knit from the yarn. The silver is permanently adhered to the yarn and will not wash out. SilverSpun is an incredibly soft cotton and the Lycra provides much more stretch and memory than traditional cotton yarns. You get the feel of cashmere with the strength of cotton. SilverSpun is a natural product without the use of chemical dyes. When knitting fitted items such as socks and gloves with SilverSpun we suggest knitting the pattern with some negative ease. Because of the Lycra you’ll be able to get a close fitting garment that will move and stretch to fit perfectly. Although SilverSpun is a sport weight yarn it has great flexibility in its uses. It can be knit with size 2 needles for a close knit fabric or on size 6 needles for a looser, drapier fabric. In this collection we feature a variety of uses for SilverSpun in a wide range of gauges. We hope you’ll enjoy stitching and wearing SilverSpun every day as much as we do.

The soft cotton in the SilverSpun yarn brings thoughts of warm weather and blue skies into view. That kind of weather calls for breezy accessories like this lacy scarf. Wrap it once around your head, knot it, and you’re good to go. The Lycra in the mix is elastic enough to keep this headwrap in place as you enjoy your carefree day.

Constructed from bottom to top, the fingerless mitts carry an intricate lace pattern up the back of the hand, yet they are surprisingly easy to knit. Simple stitches make up the design. Yarn overs, k2togs, and passing slipped stitches over are the basics of this pattern. The lacy texture yields a very stretchy fabric giving the hands full flexibility of motion. These mitts along with the matching cowl make the perfect transitional accessory set in going from one season to the next because of the thermal properties of the SilverSpun yarn. Keep warm and cozy while adding a touch of lace to any outfit even on the chilliest of days!

SILVERSPUN & NC STATE UNIVERSITY The Reiter Short Staple Yarn Laboratory was designed to help meet the needs of the textile industry in applied research. It houses state-of-the-art machinery and specializes in spinning short staple fibers. Textile manufacturing in the U.S. dropped precipitously in the 1990s and 2000s as cheaper labor drew jobs overseas. More than 200,000 textile manufacturing jobs have been lost to automation in the last decade. But with rising wages in China and other countries, combined with higher transportation costs and tarrifs, and consumers looking for the “Made in the USA” label we’ve seen a shift back to American goods. At Feel Good Yarn Company we’re proud to be creating an American made yarn and helping to ensure the future of the textiles industry in North Carolina.

All of the cotton fiber used in SilverSpun is grown in North Carolina. The bales of fiber are then processed at NC State University and spun with silver and a small amount of Lycra to create a soft, stretchy, theraputic and conductive yarn.

FAYETTEVILLE By Faith Schmidt

Easy enough for an adventurous beginner, but still interesting to the more advanced knitter, the cowl begins and ends with an easy to knit bell ruffle, while the body consists of a classic rib pattern. When worn, the ruffles lay at the base of the neck, reminiscent of a more romantic time, while the clean lines of the rib pattern give it a modern twist. Perfect for when the cold winds begin to blow, and soft enough for even the most sensitive skin, this cowl is sure to become a favorite.

KINSTON

Designed with summer evenings in mind, these tall toeless socks are just enough knitwear to keep your ankles cozy in an early evening breeze, while leaving your toes open to breathe in the fresh air. Streamlined construction allows the stitch pattern to do double duty as a ribbed edge so there is no finicky finishing to be dealt with. These are a great way to extend the wearing season of your sandals as well.
