CONCEPT / The word composition is important for music and design. I studied a classical instrument (a guzheng) when I was a kid. Every music composition gives me a different feeling. Every musical note becomes a completed song and leads me to a different musical realm. I see design as a kind of visual music, with each element resonating like a different note. My design is a composition of what I learn to combine and create from different inspirations. While I worked on this book, I always had music playing in the background that helped my design. OBJECTIVE / Revive a dying brand. Redesign a visual identity for it based on its original spirit and soul. Develop a refined brand strategy and extend the new future into the brand. CONCEPT / This project is a rebranding of Gourmet and its magazine. This magazine presents food from different countries all over the world. People can learn about culture and history through local foods. The new Gourmet will expand beyond the printed page to provide digital platforms for experiencing diverse cultures through food. In the future, Gourmet will keep the brand soul that food is a key to open the doors to other cultures. I changed the old serif logo into a key element to give the brand a meaning that belongs to Gourmet’s soul. The new slogan is, “The G is the key and the key is the G.” This key will open up the world for Gourmet.

OBJECTIVE / Design all features of a festival that is dedicated to a film director. Design a visual system for the event that includes a catalog, a poster, DVD’s, tickets, a schedule and promotional materials. The promotional campaign has a website and advertisements that all capture the essence of the film festival. CONCEPT / In the films of Shunji Iwai, people are reminded about the power of first love. It is often not a happy ending for that first love, but it is an important experience that can teach how to avoid the same mistakes again. Interestingly, it can also teach how to love a stranger. I took all the photos in a Japanese tea garden and used soft color to express the sweetness and innocence of the young characters in Shunji Iwai’s films. I also used Japanese words in the design to give people a feeling for the traditional Japanese culture that infuses his films.

OBJECTIVE / Identify a problem that can be solved through the graphic design process. Design a visual system for the specific solution. CONCEPT / Gray Water, Green Gardens is a project that focuses on recycling water for use in school gardens. Gray Water, Green Gardens will provide an educational campaign that informs schools about environmental issues and offers them information on how to conserve water. I took photos in every corner of our university in an effort to show people how to save water in their daily lives. I used blue and gray for the main colors of this project. They relates to my project name. I want people to pay attention to the water problem. The hope is that if students like this project, they will talk about it and tell their family and friends. So, campaign will make more and more people know about the project and how to preserve such a vital resource.

OBJECTIVE / Create a visual book about a daily object. I recorded all five senses as I went about a particular task. The main source of research material for this project was from natural environment. CONCEPT / I decided to observe and record a three-day hike. I recorded what I felt, smelled, touched, heard and saw while I was hiking. I think hiking is a way to communicate with nature. It allows us a chance to get away from our busy daily life and reflect on nature and our place in it.

OBJECTIVE / Consider the meaning of a selected word in the literal sense as well as the abstract or slang context and design three black & white posters portraying the discovered meaning. CONCEPT / The word I chose for the set of posters was Fluidity. The first poster was inspired by the experience of studying abroad and mailing gifts back to my parents. I created a poster that had maps in the background and a shipping label on top. This represented travelling to another country and sending back gifts to my parents. The movement of mail and even me flying back and fourth represents a kind of fluidity. The second idea of fluidity in life came from what I wrote about in my diary. The third poster was about fluidity in the sky through observations of the moon and how it waxes and wanes.

OBJECTIVE / Create a comprehensive book to experiment with designing typography layout with images. The book needs to show the possible futures that might happen in the next ten years relating to a particular topic. CONCEPT / The topic I received was “Visible Conversation.� In the future, we will have small devices in our ears. The main function of these earphones is to both hear and make a real-time holographic display of the person we are calling. It is like we are in the room with them. I created a future set of earphones in the book and explained them in detail. I made one three-dimensional page, viewed with an induced pair of blue & red colored glasses. It gave people real 3D feeling.

OBJECTIVE / To create a mobile application that solves a particular problem. Investigate how research and into an audience can create successful integrative projects that can enhance a user’s experience with a newly created brand. SOLUTIONS / Little Chef is a cooking app that can help people learn different cooking skills and shop online. The main function of this app is to free your hands when you cook. Little Chef has an artificial voice command like Siri for the kitchen. It walks you through every step in the recipe. I used a chopping board as the background, with photos of food. It will give people a professional companion to help them as they cook.

OBJECTIVE / Choose a song, then gather and research every idea, emotion, metaphor and visual that would be associated with it. Prepare various materials, such as celluloid films, glass, translucent paper and even different kinds of liquid, to construct an interesting image on an analog projector. CONCEPT / The song that I chose was My Heart Will Go On. This song is also called the “Love Theme from Titanic,” from the 1997 movie Titanic. This song is important to me because it was the first time I went to the cinema with my parents. I remembered the wooden chairs and dark yellow lights. I remembered my parents’ young face and the happiness of my childhood. I used yellow as the poster’s main color and fallen leaves to express the feeling of these memories.

OBJECTIVE / MFA THESIS Explore in rigorous depth a chosen topic that identifies a problem in the world and develop a Master’s thesis project on this topic. In this process distilled information, conducted research, analyzed strategies and developed a solution through a design approach. CONCEPT / Young Chinese families face language and communication problems when they are expecting a baby or have children younger than 5 years old. Red Lantern Families is a I created brand to help such families in San Francisco. Red Lantern Families has a guidebook set, booklets, a website, and an app to help Chinese families in their daily lives. I took photos that from different families who live in San Francisco, and I also interviewed them. The project logo is a red lantern because Chinese usually hang up red lanterns when they celebrate Chinese New Year. Red lanterns bring hope and luck to Chinese families.

FACT / Today, there are around 41 million immigrants residing in the United States. This number comprises of 13 percent of the United State’s population. Therefore, more and more Chinese people are starting to build Chinese families in America. When Chinese families are expecting or have children that are age 0-5 years old, they often face many challenges and choices.
