For the first time ever, this album introduces us with the array of pastel works by the eminent painter and graphics artist Oleksa Zakharchuk (1929–2013); these works cover the period of the 1950’s–60’s. They present a mosaic picture of different seasons imbued with delicately nuanced moods.

The pastels published in this album serve as reverberations of the legendary period of «The Thaw», as the echoing of the artist’s life. However, the artistic truths reflected in these pastels have already gained timeless values.

ей альбом присвячено пам’яті батьків. Восени 1964 ро­ ку вони познайомилися у фондах музею українського мистецтва (нині НХМУ). Алла Чебан працювала у відділі графіки, згодом вона посіла посаду головного зберігача музею. Олекса Захарчук прийшов до музею копіювати картину Сергія Григор’єва «Прийом до комсомолу». Він вже мав за спиною трагічні воєнні поневіряння та досвід першого шлюбу. Алла вразила його незбагненною одухотвореною красою. Їхня любов та шлюб тривали тридцять років — вона стала для нього Музою, турботливою дружиною, матір’ю дітей. Саме завдяки гармонійності їхніх стосунків, духовному наповненню спільного життя, розумінню дружиною творчих пошуків чоловіка-художника, Олекса Захарчук повністю зреалізував свій Дар.

Відлуння часів: пастелі 1950–1960-х Більшість пастелей цього альбому публікуються вперше. Вони є власністю родини художника та були виконані автором у молоді роки, які збіглися з хрущовською «відлигою». Пастелі створені за покликом душі, так би мовити, для себе. Дійсно, вільне дихання та свіжість, їм притаманні, резонують із загальним післясталінським відчуттям надії та новими процесами у мистецтві. Художники отримали змогу потроху знайомитися з культурою Заходу. В українському мистецтві в 1960-х роках зародився потужний рух національного Відродження. Все це вплинуло на творчість Олекси Захарчука цього періоду.

Коли тепер я працюю з архівом батька, то знаходжу добірку газетних та журнальних вирізок 1960-х років, де згадуються його ім’я та твори. Він брав активну участь у художньому процесі, тогочасних всесоюзних, республіканських виставках живопису та акварелі, хоча проходження крізь виставкові комітети часто-густо було складним. Причиною тому була власна образно-художня мова, яка відрізнялася від вимог соцреалістичного методу. Тоді ж, у середині 1960-х, зі слів батька, на одному вернісажі, знаменитий Микола Глущенко назвав його лідером нового напрямку у мистецтві. Активно працювати у техніці пастелі Олекса Захарчук почав під час навчання в Київському художньому інституті (1950– 1957). До того він отримав фундаментальний багаж знань та навичок у Харківському художньому училищі (1945–1950). «Якось вийшло так, що я багато малював ще в училищі, і в Києві продовжував малювати скрізь: на вулицях, у поїздах, на пароплавах, на базарах, вокзалах, — згадував художник у записах. До цього схвально ставились мої вчителі — Іларіон Плещинський, Тетяна Яблонська, Сергій Григор’єв. Вони добре розуміли важливість малювати завжди і скрізь, досягаючи свіжості й правди життя.» Залишилося безліч блокнотів із замальовками кольором, кульковою ручкою, олівцем. Це допомагало працювати у техніці пастелі блискуче, на єдиному подиху. Художник полюбляв пастель за здатність швидко передавати побачене, зручність та м’яку, соковиту, оксамитову фактурність. Інколи йому подобалось додавати штрихи кольоровими олівцями, простим олівцем або робити акварельну основу. Невеликі твори раннього періоду (середини 1950-х — початку 1960-х) створені на пленері і тільки тоді, коли митець відчував захоплення мотивом. Вони сприймаються як єдина серія, бо близькі за розміром, манерою виконання і складають мозаїчну картину пір року та тонко нюансованих настроїв, а також дають глядачеві відчуття спонтанності вражень, утаємниченості в ліричні переживання автора. Вони прості за сюжетами — це куточки старого Києва, передусім район Київського художнього інституту, вулиці Смирнова-Ласточкіна (нині Воскресенський узвіз), новобудови, околиці міста; також села Плюти, Стайки, Сухолуччя, Трипілля, Димер. Кілька праць присвячено Буковині: селу Бузовиця та Хотину. Художник обирає у природі суголосний його настрою мотив: в основному це зимові та весняні пейзажі, в яких передана мистецька правда та звучить трепетна, щемлива інтонація. Дійсно, настрій багатьох із них несе почуття самот­ності — одинокий хрест, безлюдні береги, голе гілля дерев, лоша серед поля… Лише де-не-де з’являються фігурки людей: вони сприймаються теж частиною Природи, Макрокосму. Тепло душі і людяність, закладені автором у ці пастелі, перемагають екзистенційний холод буття. Привабливими для ока Захарчука завжди були старі подвір’я, дворики, сараї, будівельні майданчики. У цьому він вмів розгледіти й передати смак та колорит оголеного, такого беззахисного у своїй первісній хаотичності життя: «Щось у стінці сараю мене вабить — вона глиняна, щось глибоко приспане в мені — таким стінкам у хатах-сараях ти-

сячоліття й це мене хвилює; ну й світло, яке струменіє стінкою та крізь галуззя гілки яблуні, дахи старі», — зазначає художник у записничку*. Одна з моїх улюблених пастелей цього періоду — «Зимова риболовля» (1957) на с. 39. Мотив гранично простий: на льоду сидить група рибалок, праворуч — дерева на тлі неба. Загальна гама сріблясто-коричнева. Пастель вся світиться, вона прозора, всі дотики пензля з аквареллю та пастельної крейди скупі, проте виникає ледь відчутне хвилювання: ти розумієш, що стикаєшся із справжнім Мистецтвом, із непідробними почуттями та тією високою майстерністю, яку ми здатні відчути лише якимись надрецепторами. Простота цих робіт удавана — за нею стоять нелегкий життєвий досвід, осягнення сенсу буття через творення, проникливий погляд художника, який робить свій геніальний відбір з безлічі деталей. Олекса Захарчук у цих пастелях виявляє свій дар колориста, бо мислить як живописець. Недарма він так завзято й відчайдушно домагався, щоб вчитися на живописному факультеті. Так, на другому курсі, після довгої боротьби з тодішнім ректором Київського художнього інституту Сергієм Григор’євим (згодом улюбленим вчителем), йому було дозволено перевестися з графічного факультету на живописний. *** Після знайомства із творчістю французького майстра Фернана Лєже у 1961 році на великій персональній виставці у Москві поступово змінюється манера виконання пастелей Олекси Захарчука. Твори 1963–1965-х років кардинально відрізняються від попередніх. У них домінує чорна контурна лінія та яскрава декоративна пляма, бачення майстра тяжіє до узагальненості, він використовує аркуші великих розмірів. «Мене тоді потягло до Лєже, й ці пошуки були, як виявляється, плідними. По кількох роках я знов поринув у природу, але на новому витку, відмовився від лінії, яскравого кольору. Йшов від етюду до краєвиду-картини»*, — так оцінив автор цей період у своєму Щоденнику вже у 2000-х роках. Ці пастелі також виконані за один сеанс на пленері, але як вражаюче змінилося бачення майстра у бік декоративності! Багатолюдні київські пляжі, зимові розваги, види старого Києва, стоянки човнів, вітрильники — найулюбленіші сюжети художника — пропущені ніби крізь магічний кристал його нового зору, який перетворив реальність на феєрію кольору та лінії. Творчість Ф. Лєже стала для нього лише поштовхом для створення власної образної мови. Домінуючий у творах мажорний настрій віддзеркалює той виплеск потужної енергії, який супроводжував різкі зміни в особистому житті. О. Захарчук йшов своїм шляхом й максимально переробив цей вплив, який його збагатив, а не підкорив. Це говорить про його надзвичайно сильну творчу особистість. Пастелі, опубліковані в альбомі, є відлунням легендарної пори «відлиги», відгомоном життя майстра. Відтворена в них художня правда набуває вже позачасової цінності.

his album is dedicated to the memory of my parents. My parents met during the autumn of 1964 in the storage rooms of the Museum of Fine Arts (today it is the National Art Museum of Ukraine). Alla Cheban worked in the graphics section, and thereafter became the chief curator of the museum.

Oleksa Zakharchuk came to the museum in order to copy Sergiy Grigoryev’s painting «Admission to The Young Communist League.» By then, Oleksa had already been through the tragic ordeals of WWII and had experience from his first marriage. Alla striked him with her heavenly and inspired beauty.

Their love and marriage lasted for 30 years — she became his Muse, a caring wife and a mother. It was because of the harmony of their relationship, their spiritually filled common life, and Alla Cheban’s understanding of her husband’s artistic pursuits, that Oleksa Zakharchuk was able to fully realize his Gift.

The Reverberation of Times: The Pastels of the 1950-1960’s.

Most of the pastels in this album are being made public for the first time. They belong to the artist’s family and were created by the author during his early years, which coincided with «the Khrushchev thaw.» The pastels were created following the calling of the artist’s soul — for himself, as it were. Indeed, the pastels’ characteristic freshness and airy freedom resonate well with the general post-Stalinist atmosphere of hope and with the new processes underway in Soviet art. Little-by-little, artists began to be able to acquaint themselves with Western culture and art. A powerful national Renaissance movement was born in the Ukrainian art of the 1960s. All of this had a profound effect on Oleksa Zakharchuk’s art of this period.

Now that I work with my father’s archive, I keep finding selections of cut-outs from the journals and magazines of the 1960s, which mention his name and works. He was very active in the artistic process; his art was present in the all-Soviet and republican art exhibitions of oil paintings and watercolors, even though it was frequently difficult to pass his works through the exhibition

committees. The reason was that his personal figurative artistic language was different from the requirements of the Socialist Realism canon. Sometime at a vernissage in the middle of the 1960’s, according to my father, the famous artist Mykola Hlushchenko called him the leader of a new movement in art.

«Somehow it turned out so that I started painting a lot in my arts school, and I would continue painting everywhere after moving to Kyiv — in the streets, trains, ships, markets, train stations,» wrote Zakharchuk in his notes. «My teachers — Hilarion Pleshchinskiy, Tetyana Yablonska, and Sergiy Hrihoryev — approved this approach. They understood very well the importance of painting all the time and in all the places, enabling one to reach the freshness and truth of life.»

He left many notebooks with paint, pen and pencil sketches.

This method helped him to work in pastel technique in a brilliant way, at one go.

The artist loved pastels for their ability to quickly relay what he saw, for the easement and the soft, juicy, and velvety structure of the material. Sometimes he enjoyed adding strokes with color or regular pencils or creating a watercolor foundation.

The art-piece is luminous and transparent; all of the paintbrush touches of watercolor paint and pastel chalk are frugal, yet, one feels a slight excitement — understanding that one is confronted with genuine Art, with authentic feelings, with that high artistic mastery which can be perceived only through some kind of ultrareceptors.

The simplicity of these works is a seeming one — behind it, there stand the artist’s difficult life experience, his way of grasping the meaning of life through creation, and his discerning gaze, which makes its genious selection out of myriad of details.

Through these pastels, Oleksa Zakharchuk exhibits his gift as a colorist, because his thinking is that of a painter. It was not without reason that he sought so anxiously and obstinately to study precisely at the painting department of his school. During his sophomore year, after a long struggle with Sergiy Grigoryev, the dean of the Kyiv Arts Institute, (who would later become his favorite teacher), Oleksa Zakharchuk was allowed to transfer from the graphics department to the institute’s painting department.

*** The small-scale pastels of the artist’s early period (mid 1950’s — early 1960’s) were created en plein air and exclusively at the moments when the artist felt inspired by the motif.

They are felt like a single series, since they are similar in size and the manner of their execution; they form a mosaic picture of the year’s seasons as well as of delicately nuanced moods giving the viewer the feeling of spontaneity of impressions and the hidden lyrical experiences of the author.

These works are simple in their subjects; they include some nooks of old Kyiv: first of all the area near Kyiv art institute, Smirnova-Lastochkina street (currently Voskresenskiy descent), as well as newly built neighborhoods, the city’s suburbs and the villages near Kyiv — Plyuty, Staiky, Sukholuchchya, and Trypillia.

Some of the works are dedicated to the Bukovyna region and its villages Buzovytsya and Khotyn. In them, the artist chooses the themes in nature which correspond best to his mood. Usually these are winter and spring landscape scenes that reveal the artistic truth and have a plaintive, tremulous intonation. Indeed, many of the works convey a feeling of loneliness depicting a lonesome cross, uninhabited shores, naked tree branches, a horse in an empty field... It is only occasionally that one can see human figures here-and-there perceived as part of Nature and the Macrocosm. The warmth and humanness which the author put into these pastels, win over the existential coldness of existence.

Old yards, gardens, barns, and construction sites were always attractive to Zakharchuk’s eye. Through these places, he was able to discern and convey the taste and colors of a naked life, so defenseless in its primal chaotic form. «Something attracts me to the wall of an old shed — it is made of clay, it refers to something that lies dormant in me. Such walls in some cottage-sheds date to thousands of years and this excites me; and of course, the lighting, which flows down the wall and through the branches of an apple tree and old roofs,» — wrote the artist in his notebook.

One of my favorite pastels of this period is «Winter Fishing» (1957). Its subject is very simple — a group of fishermen are sitting on ice. On the right there are several trees against the

His works of 1963–1965 drastically differ from the previous ones. They are dominated by black contour lines and bright decorative spots; in them, the artist’s vision tends to be more generalized, and he uses large-sized sheets.

«At the time, I felt drawn toward Léger, and these artistic searches would eventually turn out to be fruitful for me. Several years after, I became immersed into nature again but in a new way — I discarded the use of contours and bright colors. I started moving from etude work to landscape painting,» the author wrote of this period in his notebook in the 2000’s.

These later pastels were also executed en plein air in one session but how impressively had the artist’s vision changed toward the use of decoration! Crowded Kyiv beaches, winter amusement games, sights of the old Kyiv neighborhoods, parked boats, and yachts — the artist’s favorite subjects — they pass through as it were the magic crystal of his new vision that turned reality into an extravaganza of color and contours. The art of Léger had only served for Zakhrchuk as an impetus for creating his own expressive language. The prevalent positive mood in his works of the time mirrors that burst of powerful energy that accompanied important changes in his personal life.

Oleksa Zakharchuk went his own way by maximally reworking this influence in such a way that it enriched rather than enslaved him.

бдаровані Богом особистості завжди складні у cвоїй багатоплановості. Непросто з ними, непросто їм, навіть із самими собою. Непоказну, приховану природу свого дару Божого вони відкривають не завжди і не кожному. Творчість доброго генія чимось нагадує веселку — нікому з людей ще не вдалося наблизитися до неї впритул. На жаль, як не всім дано розгледіти кольоровий спектр веселки, так приховано від випадкових очей і ознаки генія. Щоб їх побачити, потрібна відповідна обдарованість Щирим Бажанням та Повагою до Художника. Я впевнений: художник Олекса Захарчук заслужив називатися добрим генієм. У цьому альбомі зібрано основні пастелі Олекси Захарчука 1950–1960-х років. Від першої зустрічі з його творчістю стає зрозуміло: це виняткова, непересічна творча особистість. Трохи згодом, потроху, відкривається те, наскільки його життєтворчість водночас багатопланова й непоказна — справжня веселка. Невід’ємні складники його творчості — живопис, графіка, пастелі, його особистості — мужність, порядність, цілеспрямованість. Основні цінності майстра — Дар Божий та родина. Цей альбом вибраних пастелей уже третій, після «Графіки» та «Живопису», у серії видань про творчість художника. Він особливий — значною мірою це ключ до розуміння феномена творчості Олекси Захарчука. Художники-професіонали дуже добре знають: справжня майстерність виявляється у швидких начерках та етюдах, в акварелях чи пастелях. Тут усе експромт, його не виправиш, як є — так є. Часом такий творчий виплеск на аркуші паперу розповідає про автора значно більше, ніж добре «продумане» та не раз переписане масштабне полотно. Тут нічого не приховаєш: перед очима світогляд, особисте бачення, ставлення до життя, темперамент, професійна майстерність, усе — за «ґамбурзьким рахунком». Досі ми знали тільки частину веселки світу художника Олекси Захарчука. Професійний мистецький простір тонкого колориста, майстерного живописця та графіка, який поступово, десятиріччями долав обрані для себе, майже недосяжні творчі вершини. Ці довершені роботи, безперечно,

вже належать історії не лише українського, а й європейського та світового мистецтва. Їхнє народження — це не «поява», не якийсь випадковий талан. Роками митець неквапливо та ніжно, власним життям, формував і нарешті створив свій унікальний особистий художній простір. Він вибудовував його кожною наступною картиною. Нині цей простір відкритий нам — усім, хто готовий до нього увійти. У пастелях нам довірили тонкий світ швидких, майже миттєвих вражень майстра, живописне втілення його світосприйняття. Дібрані роботи — ще й свідки особливого творчого шляху та характеру розвитку особистості художника. Кінець 1950-х та 1960-ті в СРСР, особливо в УРСР, були непростим часом для вибору саме «своєї» головної теми, напряму розвитку творчості. Дуже велика була спокуса піти за модою на різні течії модернізму. Інформація про них ще вчора була категорично заборонена та вкрай небезпечна. В роки «відлиги» вона знову стала відносно доступною художній спільноті. Кон’юнктурні тематики безпрограшного «мистецтва соціалістичного реалізму» (воєнно-патріотична, пейзажно-індустріальна, соціалістично-будівнича тощо) з часом забезпечили багатьом його товаришам по живописному цеху офіційне визнання владою. Почесні звання, нагороди, посади, квартири, майстерні, офіційні замовлення, персональні виставки та… цілковита відсутність самоповаги і творчого розвитку. Перелічені «кон’юнктурно надійні» теми справді були присутні в житті покоління. Як легко, без особливих зупинок, «прогортав» їх для себе художник Захарчук, добре видно саме з цієї колекції пастелей. Він і пейзажний живопис знайшли та обрали один одного раз і назавжди. У цьому жанрі Олекса Захарчук спромігся досягти творчого катарсису, максимально можливих висот пізнання сутності світу — аж до найвищого стану посвяченості. Начерки пастеллю — це особлива, досить складна техніка споріднення малюнку й живопису. Вона потребує не лише гострого художнього стробоскопічного бачення цілого та окремих деталей, а й бездоганного відчуття кольору і коло-

риту. Все це притаманно роботам у цій чудовій збірці. Вдумливий позитивний погляд на довколишній світ, бачення свята у звичайній строкатій юрбі на ковзанці, медитативність рибалок на тлі річкового льоду — майже на рівні японського «саду каменів»… Особливе, улюблене місце у творчості художника посідають пейзажі з водою, річки з човнами та катерами, неорані поля в обрамленні лісу, пагорби з дорогами до церков на вершинах. І завжди — вранці, вдень, уночі — огром неба. Зустрічні схили темної, лісистої гори і світлого трав’яного схилу — як справжні «інь» та «янь» сутності життя… Головним визначенням справжнього художника є не тільки вміння та бажання час від часу помалювати. Так повелося, що в нас із давніх-давен більш-менш малюють майже всі. Художник від Бога взагалі не може не малювати — це форма його існування у просторі, свідомості, часі, суспільстві. Що, чим і на чому він малює — це вже аспект другорядний і суто професійний. Те, як він це робить, визначає його місце у світі найзначущих доробків людства. Будь-який талант — не просто подарунок Долі. Його богообрані відробляють кожним своїм днем: відповідним ставленням до життя та життєвих обставин, вибором головного напряму духовного зростання, усвідомленням та прагненням максимальної довершеності. Усі чули, бачили або читали про випадки, коли надзвичайні здібності з’являлися у людей, на долю яких випали незвичайні випробування клінічною смертю, аваріями, катас­ трофами тощо. Їхня свідомість і фізичне тіло були повністю «перезавантажені» та збережені для чогось важливого. Здебільшого це стається з людьми зрілого віку, із великим життєвим досвідом та «тягарем» обставин, які тримали їх біля землі. Проте, виявляється, трапляються й феноменальні поодинокі випадки щедрого «авансування» на початку життя для «обраних»: дитина чи підліток за якихось надзвичайних обставин отримує «сигнал» та усвідомлює можливості звершення свого зіркового життєвого шляху художника, вченого, музики, поета, артиста, навіть пророка... Я впевнений: Олекса Захарчук — це саме той Художник від Бога, який отримав свій дар, бачення Шляху та Мети, коли в 1943-му пройшов чистилище дитячого сирітства і вимушеної самостійності, насильства та крові, загартувався жахіттям війни. Він навіть пройшов вибір між зрадою та загрозою мученицької смерті в гестапо. За 25 років, в 1968-му, він, уже художник та голова родини, виявив справжню мужність і з чистим сумлінням підписав листа на захист правозахисників. Цим він остаточно визначив своє майбутнє на найближчі 20 років життя та творчості у радянській Україні. На щастя, все минає, минула й диктатура та тиранія КПРС-СРСР-УРСР. Тепер ми маємо щасливу можливість вільно зустрітися із творчістю художника Олекси Захарчука. Я переконаний, що ближче знайомство з його мистецькими творами подарує глядачеві пронизливе відчуття: це те, що робить світ кращим.

od-gifted individuals are always complex in their multi-facetedness. It is difficult for one to be with them, and it is difficult even for them to be with themselves; the restrained and concealed nature of the gift they received from God is not disclosed to everyone. The art of a goodnatured genius somehow reminds me of a rainbow — no one was ever able to approach it face to face. Alas, not every person is able to distinguish the full color spectrum of a rainbow; similarly, the features of a genius are hidden from random eyes. In order to see them, one must be gifted with Sincere Appreciation and Respect toward the Artist. I am certain that the artist Oleksa Zakharchuk deserves to be called one of such geniuses.

This album consists of Oleksa Zakharchuk’s main pastel artworks. From the first encounter with his work, one understands that he is an exceptional, outstanding artistic individual. His art reveals itself with time, little by little, which shows how extraordinarily multi-sided and restrained his life work is — a real rainbow indeed. The essential components of his artwork are oil painting, graphics and pastels. His main protagonists are courageous, honest and purposeful individuals. His core values are the gift of God and family.

This album of select pastels is already the third publication of the artist’s work, following «Graphics» and «Drawings.» This album is special. In some sense, it is the key for understanding the phenomenon of Zakharchuk’s art. Professional artists know very well that true mastery exhibits itself best in quick sketches, watercolors or pastel outlines. It is all about impromptu — one cannot correct it later; it is what it is now. Sometimes, such artistic bursts of improvisation on a sheet of paper tell us much more about the author than the well «thought-through» and oftcorrected large-scale oil paint canvases. Everything is exposed here — the artist’s outlook, personal views, attitude toward life, temperament, and professional skills — everything what is meant by the notion of «The Hamburg score.»

So far we have only known a part of the rainbow representing Oleksa Zakharchuk’s personal artistic world. The pro-

fessional artistic space of a fine colorist, skilled painter and graphic artist, who gradually, by decades, conquered his chosen and almost unreachable artistic heights. Without doubt, these consummate works not only belong to Ukraine’s history but are now also part of European and world art. Their birth was not a simple «emergence» — not some sort of random luck. For years, slowly and gently, through his own life, the artist formed and finally created his own unique personal artistic space building it up with every new work. Today, this space is open to us — and to everyone who is ready to enter it.

In these pastels, we are entrusted with the fine world of the artist’s quick, almost momentary, impressions — with the painterly embodiment of his worldview. These select works also testify to the artist’s distinct creative path and the nature of his personal evolution.

The late 1950’s and 60’s in the Soviet Union, and especially in the Soviet Ukraine, were not an easy time for the artists choosing their own main topic and direction in artistic development. It was very tempting for one to utilize the time’s vogue for various trends of modernism, the very knowledge of which was illegal and very dangerous until recently. During the years of the «Thaw», information about modernism became relatively more accessible to the Soviet artistic society. Opportunistic subjects of the fail-safe «art of Socialist Realism», such as war-patriotism, industrial scenery, socialist construction, etc., eventually brought recognition by the authorities to Zakharchuk’s numerous fellow artists. They were given honors, awards, medals, positions, apartments, art-studios, official work orders, and personal exhibits, but had developing their self-respect and creativeness. The «opportunistically fail-safe» subjects mentioned above indeed formed a part of the artistic generation’s life.

In this collection of pastels, one can see how quickly and light-heartedly Zakharchuk passed over these themes.

Once and for all, Zacharchuk and landscape painting found and chose each other. In this genre, Oleksa Zacharchuk was able to achieve an artistic catharsis reaching the maximal heights of understanding the world, up to the highest state of initiatedness.

Pastel sketching is a special, quite elaborate, technique of combining drawing and painting. Not only does it require a refined stroboscopic artistic vision of the whole and the separate parts, but it also presupposes the need to have an excellent feeling for colors and coloration. All of this is characteristic of the works of this collection. In them, the artist gets a thoughtful and positive view of the surrounding world seeing a celebration in a regular checkered crowd on an iceskating rink and conveying the meditativeness of fishermen against the background of river ice which almost equals the meditativeness of the Japanese «rock garden»... A special and favorite place in Oleksa’s art is given to landscapes involving water, rivers with boats and yachts, untilled fields on the background of forests, and hills with roads leading to churches at the top. And whatever time of the day it is — morning, evening or night — there is always a magnificent sky. The counter slopes of a dark tree-covered hill and a bright grassy descent appear as the true «yin» and «yang» of life’s essence.

The main definition of a real artist is not only one’s ability and desire to do some painting from time to time. It has been our long-established practice that more or less everyone does some painting. God-gifted artists cannot exist without painting at all — as it is the way of their existence in space, consciousness, time and society. The artist’s subject, genre and material — these are all secondary and purely technical aspects. It is how the artist does what he does that determines his or her place in the universe of the most important human achievements.

Any talent received from God is not simply a present from Fate. It is a peculiar advance payment of life given out by the Lord, something which one pays off with one’s entire existence. A talent is chiseled with a corresponding attitude toward life and its circumstances as well as with one’s vision of the main direction of one’s spiritual development and one’s recognition of one’s maximally consummate final goal in life.

Everyone heard, saw or read about numerous cases of receiving of extraordinary abilities by regular individuals who went through unusual trials in life, such as clinical deaths, accidents, catastrophes, etc. It is as if their consciousness and physical body were completely «rebooted» and saved for something very important. As a rule, this happened to older people, those with broad life experience and a «burden» of circumstances, which kept these individuals down to earth.

However, as it turned out, single phenomenal cases of generous «advance payment» also occur at the beginning of lives of the «chosen ones» — when a child or a teenager receives a «signal» and recognizes the opportunity of achieving a radiant life path of an artist, scholar, musician, poet, performer, or even a prophet...

I am assured that Oleksa Zakharchuk is that Artist from God, who received his gift of vision of his Path and Goal, when, in 1943, he came out clean and intact from the purgatory of being an orphan, when he passed through compelled self-reliance, violence and blood being tempered by the horrors of war. Oleksa even went through having to choose between betrayal and the threat of an agonized death in the Gestapo.

Twenty-five years after the war, in 1968, Oleksa, who was already an established artist and a paterfamilias, had the real courage to make his choice and sign — with clean conscience — a letter in support of Ukrainian dissidents. By doing this, he decisively determined his future status in the next 20 years of his life and art in Soviet Ukraine.

Luckily, everything passes, including the dictatorship and tyranny of the Soviet Union and Communist Party. Today, we have the fortunate opportunity to freely meet and enjoy the art of Oleksa Zakharchuk. I am confident that, as the result of our more intimate encounter with his art creations as well as of our deeper interest and proper attitude toward his art, the world has a chance to become a somewhat better place.

БІОГРАФІЯ 2 лютого 1929 р. — народився у м. Іллінцях на Вінниччині.

1943–1944 — під час Великої Вітчизняної війни брав участь у партизанському русі на Вінниччині, в 2-й партизанській бригаді ім. Сталіна. Вийшов живим з Оратівського гестапо.

1944–1948 — перебував у дитячому будинку в Харкові.

1945–1950 — навчався в Харківському художньому училищі; перша участь у виставках: обласна художня у Харкові (1949 р.).

1950–1957 — навчався в Київському художньому інституті; вчителі — Т. Яблонська, С. Григор’єв.

1965–1966 — працював над монументальним розписом у бібліотеці-музеї А. Гайдара в м. Каневі Черкаської обл.

3 1966 р. — член Спілки художників України; участь у республіканських, всесоюзних та міжнародних художніх виставках.

1968 — підписав листа на захист В. Чорновола, О. Гінзбурга та Ю. Галанскова, за що зазнав утисків.

2002 — мистецька премія «Київ» у галузі пейзажного живопису ім. С. Шишка.

2006 — отримав звання Заслужений художник України

25 березня 2013 — помер у м. Києві.

Biography of the artist February 2, 1929 — was born in the town of lllintsi, Vinnytsia Region.

1943–1944 — during the WWII took part in the par­tisan movement

in the Vinnytsia Region, in the 2nd Stalin partisan brigade. Managed to get out of Orativ Gestapo alive.

1944–1948 — in an orphanage in Kharkiv.

1945–1950 — studied at the Kharkiv Art School, the first participation in the regional art exhibition in Kharkiv (1949).

1950–1957 — studied at the Kyiv Institute of Fine Arts under T. Yab­lonska and S. Hryhoryev.

Since 1966 — a member of the Artists Union of Ukraine, has been participation in republican, all-Union and international exhibitions.

1965–1966 — worked on the monumental mural painting in the A. Gaidar Library-Museum in Kaniv.

1968 — participated in the dissident movement: signed the letter in defence of V. Chornovil, A. Ginsburg and Y. Galanskov, for which was persecuted.

2002 — the winner of the Shishko Art Prize «Kyiv» in landscape painting.

2006 — entitlement for the rank of the Distinguished Artist of Ukraine Oleksa Zakharchuk died on March 25, 2013 in Kyiv.
