ELIPSIS Elipsis started with a market investigation aiming for a new “movable toy” concept that was able to suit both children and adults. The project took place in a design course in which the product had to be developed from sketches to a functional prototype. An extensive analysis of the user through polls led to a product based on the elliptical bicycle found in gyms but movable. Several tests of the system were necessary to make it work. The toy prototype that had a lot of success in the course and subsequent presentations. Year: 2011 Author: Felipe Hernández V. University: Universidad Veritas Course: Product Design III

2011

A poll to 150 persons between 14 and 35 years old was made and its analysis determined that they prefer an innovative product, a different way of riding bicycles. I got inspired from the elliptical bicycles to do exercise.

6

After the design was defined the initial construction took place digitally, drawing every component with high detail. The technical drawings and templates were useful for a precise construction of the prototype which I supervised personally and assisted in every moment.

The prototype was fully functioning and it had great success between the public. Kids, teenagers and adults were riding it as expected. Although it had some mechanisms that could’ve being improved, it was presented in an innovation fair.

RECORDING STUDIO SPECIALIZED FURNITURE In this project Von Kelemen Music Group asked for two recording studio furniture lines that suited standardized sized electronic devices for audio engineering. There were two concept lines: classic and contemporary style. Only the classic version was fabricated for commercialization but the other design line is perfectly capable of being produced. The production of the furniture was supervised by me. The parts were produced with CNC cutting to make the assembly more precise. Year: 2011 Author: Felipe Hernรกndez V. Company: Canal Creativo S.A. The client was very satisfied with the result of the project, asking for two other classical line desks and selling them to different buyers.

METABO PROMOTIONAL VAN This special project was developed for Capris, an industrial manufacturing tool supplier. They have a representation of the worldwide known power tools company Metabo, so they asked us to develop a design in which we would provide a promotional van to show the power tools around Costa Rica’s factories. This van needed brand communication and an electric adaptation to connect the power tools for demonstrations. The van was successfully delivered.

This was a very interesting experience given all the limitations and regulations that a vehicle of this kind has, its success was the result of the hard work together with several employees of the company.

13

MOVISTAR FLOAT This design was requested by the publicity agency Tribu for the “Festival de la Luz 2012”, a festival of lights that takes place in Costa Rica every year. The client was Movistar a cellphone multinational, and they developed a concept based on the communication between people using cellphones. We were in charge of giving life to this concept, designing and developing from the costumes to the appearance of the float. We won the third place.

Year: 2012 Author: Felipe Hernández V. Company: Elete Creative Client: Movistar

In this project I had to work together with technicians and engineers to develop the different mechanisms of the float, being in direct contact with different professionals made this multidisciplinary experience very constructive.

HEXAGRO This thesis addresses the problem to grow vegetables in urban spaces. In the course of the investigation the fundamental problems are determined like the efficiency of traditional crops, the space they use and the costs they require. The answer to these problems was given with an aeroponic technique system that enables a geometrical configuration to grow an efficient crop. Hexagro is defined as a module unit that can be configured in several ways, for example as a tree (main configuration).

The first stage of the project was a geometric analysis to look for the most efficient configuration for the optimization of the space. The study was based on natural configurations present in plants determining different kind of strategies depending on the need of the system, for this design I employed the spiral, the bifurcation and the explosive configurations inside a hexagonal 2D point space.

The second stage of the project was to make this bi-dimensional analysis become a tri-dimensional one. With a subsequent study of 3D polyhedra, it was determined that the equivalent of an hexagon (the most efficient geometrical figure in a 2D space) was the truncated octahedron which adapted in all the different configurations and provided an efficient spatial distribution for the modules.

21

22

This project was developed in the course of 4 months. I worked full-time on it being helped by entities as the INA (national learning institute) for the thermoforming of the pieces and other persons and factories that helped me to build the 1:1 scale prototype. For this, I was awarded with the first mention of honor for a graduation project in the history of the university career.

23

PUMPSPRAY This project started as the re-engineering of an oil sprayer for industrial use. The objective was to detect a specific problem and focus on that to create a sprayer that could have another use. In this case we focused on the ergonomics of the sprayer due to its uncomfortable grip and pump. We designed a sprayer that could be used only with one hand maintaining the balance of the weight and letting the user to operate it while doing gardening and cleaning labors. Year: 2013 Author: Felipe Hernรกndez V. Alessandro Zecca Daniel Jacobsen University: Politecnico di Milano Course: Product Design and Development I

24

2013

The aesthetics and “how to use were factors in which we focused the project, nevertheless, the engineering aspect of it is the most interesting one as we had to design the parts considering production aspects and materials.

25

26

The sprayer construction was digital and every single component was drew to guarantee its real functioning. The plastic production parts were reviewed by a material engineer that checked its design.

We used a functional model to test the different pumps, weight factors and ergonomic configurations until we found the right proportions. The sprayer design was well reviewed for its attractive shape and ergonomic features.

CARACOL Caracol is a design concept developed for the italian illumination-design company Artemide. The main purpose of the project was to design a lighting system for the home and office to exploit shape memory alloy materials technology. This system would be able to “roll up” for a diffuse light or “roll down” for a direct light, changing its shape by the activation of SMA wires in the sides.

Year: 2013 Author: Felipe Hernández V. Leonardo Poma Davide Pecchini Giovanni Michela University: Politecnico di Milano Course: Criteria for the selection and use of materials Advisor Company: Artemide

28

2013

The flexibility and elegance of this design in a work environment would provide comfort to the user choosing the desired amount of light in an interactive and innovative way.

29

The SMA wires are inside the electric cable sheath that is made from a silicon material to resist the heat that wires produce when activated. There are two wires because one works for rolling up and the other one does the opposite.

30

Its simplicity and innovative mechanisms adapt well to Artemide’s request. The project received good comments from the professors and tutors from the company which supported technically its development.

31

WU - AIR CONDITIONER Wu is a development of a new kind of air conditioner for the chinese electrodomestic manufacturer Midea which looked to change the common mode of use and aesthetics of the normal product. Our concept was to change the plastic cover for a flexible and organic one. We chose Barrisol, a flexible plastic to let the internal components define the shape and at the same time let light pass through due to this material transparency. Year: 2014 Author: Felipe Hernรกndez V. Alessandro Zecca Tiago Rego Henriques University: Politecnico di Milano Course: Product Design and Development II Advisor Company: Midea

The engineering of the air conditioner included every component in an approximate way as we did not count this time with an engineering team that could review the design to be very precise. All the components though, were designed contemplating fabrication processes.

OLTRE FRONTIERA PROGETTI / INTERNSHIP Oltre Frontiera Progetti is a company specialized in the production of window shops for several brands as Hugo Boss, Armani, Versace, etc. designing every article for the installations worldwide. My duty in the company as an industrial and graphic designer was designing and drawing the different concepts the clients brought to make them industrially produced. This is my first european work experience that lasted for 6 months in Milan.

Year: 2014 Author: Felipe Hernรกndez V. Company: Oltre Frontiera Progetti Duration: 17 april - 17 october

36

2014

I used to sketch the concept and then draw in 3D the window shops to make renders to present to the client. These drawings had to be modified constantly due to the client requests until they were ready to engineer.

37

38

In this window shop several proposals were presented to the client and after one was chosen its fabrication was planned. This was is for Coin Rome and I supervised its production and installation.
