Malahayati: The Lioness from Aceh FIELDS

Admiral Malahayati is a female national hero from Aceh. On the 16th century, she led the fleet of widows to physically fight and banish the foreign invaders. She won a duel against Cornelis de Houtman from the Netherlands and made the western empire acknowledge her fierceness. Despite her achievements, many Indonesians, especially children, doesn’t know her. For my thesis project, I made a 36 pages children’s picture book telling the story of Malahayati’s life in hopes to introduce her to Indonesian children and ultimately inspire them. I think it is utterly important that there is a representation of physically and mentally strong female amongst children literature.

Bright orange on the cover is to represent the burning fighting spirit that Malahayati has. The pattern decorating the cover is inspired by a flower pattern that is unique to Aceh; “bunga cempaka“. This flower embodies “The Spirit & Beauty of Aceh“.

I personally chose “The Origin of Bali Strait“ because of the message that it portrays; one truly needs to have self restraint. First off, I picked the most iconic scenes from the story that I would illustrate. Then, with children as the target audience in mind, I developed an illustration style that tends to have a lot of rounded shape, body proportion with larger head, and also a soft colour pallete.

Poster designs submitted for Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC). In 2019, their big theme is “empathy“; about how we put ourselves in others’ shoes. I participated in the Visual Design category. In depicting empathy, I ultimately decided to go with animal exploitation as I think it can be easier to illustrate.

I used irony as a communication approach to portray the unempathetic society that we have become today. Therefore, these posters are visual metaphors that depicts humans’ apathy towards one another. This collection intends to capture the irony that sometimes, humans can be even more cruel than animals. Since these posters' message is a form of critique, I decided to use grungy texture , flat cartoon illustration, and warm colours inspired by the style of propaganda posters.

Festivo is an augmented reality studio that creates immersive experience for their clients. In 2019, they were rejuvenating their website and needed some illustrations for it to represent the 3 services that they offer; 1 Virtual Exhibition, Tour, & Entertainment, 2 Virtual Interactive Games & Brand Activation, 3 Virtual Training & Simulation. They intended to apply the tactile feel of watercolour texture to their website to symbolize that their virtual immersive products feel just as real and tactile as reality. Aside from the 3 illustrations, I was also commisioned to design a character who would serve as a main avatar in the illustrations.

Festivo's brand image is playful, open minded, and unconventional. Considering those traits, the illustrations were explored through experimental gestures, proportions, shapes, and colours. The colours used are festivo's main identity colours; orange and purple.

*Apparently, they eventually turned these 2D illustrations into 3D to be applied on their website.

Taman Sari Royal Heritage is a premium spa that serves their customers as if they were the nobles from Keraton era. This spa is based off the noblemen’s bathing place in Keraton Jogja called “Istana Air Taman Sari“. Taman Sari’s visual identity has never been upgraded since it first launched in 1997. Now, they wish to broaden their target market to include the milenial age group. Therefore, they need a new visual identity that is more up-to-date. Therefore, the new identity should feel modern and luxurious without setting aside the Keraton culture that is a big part of this spa’s spirit.

The logo icon is inspired by the shape of Keraton Jogja Sultanate crown, that was rearangged into a logo mark that looks like a flower because "Sari" of "Taman Sari" means flowers in Javanese.

PT Krakatau Steel Tbk. is the largest steel maker in Indonesia, located in Banten. The factory is set on a 280-hectare plot in the western end of Banten where the Krakatoa volcano and island from which the company takes its name are located. Back in visual identity class, we were tasked to redesign their visual identity. After observing their visual identity back then, I find that their application of their identity system wasn't very consistent. Therefore, aligning with their motto (Partnership for Sustainable Growth) and them being a steel maker, the new visual identity should be upgraded to feel more bold, progressive, yet collaborative.

Bangun Citra is an architecture and interior contractor, as well as furniture builder established in 2011. Since their establishment, they never had a solid visual identity. Their promotion method up till now is that of word of mouth from client to client. Currently, they wish to provide an online service by website. In the future, they also want to target premium class clients in addition to their current mid-class clients. All considerations above, Bangun Citra decides that they need a new visual identity that feels modern, clean, and reliable.

Beema Honey came to our “Packaging Design“ Class in need of a packaging + brochure design for their new product, propolis trigona. They wanted the design to feel premium and modern to suit their target market. To answer the brief, I designed a packaging that utilizes a lot of white space, gold as the main colour, and left aligned texts so that everything looks neat. The usage of lines in the design is to show the rigid nature that you might find in a lot of pharmaceutical products.

Abipraya Properti is a BUMN company that is also a new player in the property industry. They looked to redesign their company profile so that it looks more professional. As an intern designer at Kamarupa, I was assigned to design this 70 pages company profile for them. They noted that the company profile should look clean and the layout should highlight their product photos.

As part-time designer, I was responsible for designing Beema Honey’s social media, online shop, and their advertisement needs. Beema honey's target audience is of mid-class up urban citizens age 25+.
