The aim of the Student union is to work entirely for the benefit of students. The Union is managed by Student Reps who will be elected each year by the whole student population, who work and volunteer for the Union for a year. The Union will represent student views, concerns and will ensure that students have access to quality services. It will listen to the students for bringing in positive change and will work with relevant staff members to make it happen. There will be an appointed student union coordinator who will be working closely with student Reps, faculty and other departments of the School to set the direction of the Union and its activities. This will involve organising student elections, deploying student surveys and taking deliberate steps to hear student voice at strategic and operational level.

Promoting Entrepreneurship Spirit

In recent years, LSST has seen rapidly growing interest in entrepreneurship among our students. Every year, enthusiastic, innovative and successful students are invited to participate in LSST Dragon’s Den competition where everyone had chance to pitch their business idea and win financial support to put towards the development of their business. Moreover, Dragons Den provides students with valuable feedback from business professionals on the viability of their business proposals. Participants are given tips on how to progress with their proposal as well as sources of information and funding.

Student Café Each campus has its own Student Café – an ideal place for networking, knowledge sharing with fellow students or if you just want to relax, have a quick snack, or just watch TV.

Available Financial Support Support from the Government: Student Finance England If you decide to apply for BTEC Higher National Qualifications and University of West London (Top-up) courses you can get student finance to help pay for your costs while studying. There’s lots of financial help available; loans (which do have to be paid back) and grants and bursaries (that don’t). The information below, and throughout this section, is for students commencing their course in September 2015. There are three sources of finance to help with living and studying costs: a non-repayable grant, a loan for living costs and a loan for tuition fees. These are reapplied for each year of undergraduate study:

A non-repayable grant for living costs: the Maintenance Grant Eligibility for this non-repayable grant is determined by your household income.

80

A repayable loan for living costs: the Maintenance Loan. The amount of loan received depends in part on your household income.

A repayable loan for tuition fees: the Tuition Fee Loan This is paid directly to the university and covers the full cost of your tuition fee. The amount you’re entitled to is not affected by your household income. You can pay it back later in affordable monthly instalments, and only when you’re earning over the income threshold, currently £21,000.

Support from the Government: Skills Funding Agency Those over 24 who want to enrol on a BTEC National course may be eligible for a government-backed loan. The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan is available to anyone over the age of 24 wishing to study a qualification at level 3 or 4. The government-backed loan can be used to fund all or part of the cost of study and repayments don’t begin until the learner is earning at least £21,000.
