Staying fit and making sure we are eating right is never an easy task. If you were raised Down South then you understand. Down South is home to what we call soul food! Sundays are mainly guaranteed to consist of collard greens, sweet potatoes (candied yams), cornbread, macaroni and cheese with fried chicken and a heavy dessert! When you’re eating this good every week, it's hard to say no to the smell of peach cobbler fresh out of the oven with a scoop of ice cream on the side in exchange for a healthier meal with fewer calories. I can admit that I have had many days of starting a good workout routine and then stopping because I didn’t feel motivated enough to continue. Since the pandemic, many of us gained weight from sitting and eating all day. We have got to do better! In the black community we are generally at higher risk for heart diseases, stroke, cancer, asthma, influenza and pneumonia, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS, according to the Office of Minority Health, part of the Department for Health and Human Services. We are now also starting to see a development of diseases typically seen in older patients at a young age. This issue of FEMI for the summer focuses on Fitness & Health! It features a host of stories from those in the field of medicine, and those who train others to stay in shape daily! We are excited to feature Trell Griffin, a Fitness Trainer in Mobile, Alabama on the cover alongside with Model & Actress Shantel Jackson who is the longtime girlfriend of Rapper Nelly, and the Boss of a company known as Fanci Goods, and her own skincare line! We hope every story featured in this publication ignites a fire to make you stick to your fitness routine and take better care of your health! We love you here at FEMI!

n a world full of false advertising nutrition ads and thousands of health supplements not approved by the FDA, we all struggle in confusion of which brand to trust to lead us to successful weight loss and longevity. Yet, of the many advertisements and health recommendations promoted by these businesses, the obesity rate 6

continues to grow at a drastic amount with no intention to slow down or decrease in the coming years. This in turn increases the diagnosis of diseases and preventable health complications such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure, all of which can be fatal.

vegetables are healthier, when you put a label on it, some tend to avoid it. Your fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, dairy, proteins, and healthy fats all fit into a category of nutrient dense foods. Nutrient dense foods are food choices that tend to be higher in nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, and lower in calories. One can eat more nutrient dense foods and be full, and still have more calories to consume for later meals. Then, our cakes, cookies, candy bars, etc. all fit into a category of energy dense foods. Energy dense foods are foods that are lower in vitamins and minerals, but much higher in calories. Some energy dense foods don’t consist of any vitamins and minerals at all. Needless to say, vitamins and minerals are nutrients that we tend to forget about, but our bodies cannot function properly without them. Energy dense foods also tend to have ingredients that aren’t beneficial to our health, such as a high number of added sugars, saturated fats, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium. Consuming these can lead to an array of health problems that no individual would want to live with. Healthy eating consists of ensuring you receive the vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants, your body needs to function on a daily basis. We all know what food groups are, and what was once a food pyramid has now changed to a food diagram called MyPlate. This can be found on the USDA website which includes recommendations of how much of each food group you should consume according to your age and daily calorie goals. When you consume these nutrient dense foods in accordance with the recommended servings in variety, you receive all the nutrients your body needs on a daily basis to function properly. Let’s look at fiber as an example. restaurants are conveniently located right next to our jobs and on the way home, or because Uber Eats takes the difficulty of time-consuming dinner preparation from our hands, it’s still achievable. So how do we eat healthy? Before going into this topic, let’s get rid of the mindset that healthy foods are fruits, vegetables, etc. and unhealthy foods are candy, cakes, and cookies. Although fruits and FEMI MAGAZINE

Whole grains are important, and we need them daily because of the sources of dietary fiber, B vitamins, and minerals that they provide to us. Fiber is important for lowering cholesterol levels in our blood, which in turn reduces our risk for heart disease. Amongst other benefits, fiber is also important for decreasing the rate at which our bodies absorb sugar, which in turn decreases our risk for diabetes. Energy dense foods do not contain fiber, therefore, the more energy dense foods you consume and the less

fiber you have in your diet, and the higher risk you have for being diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes. Most people think the answer to longevity, weight loss, and simply living a healthier lifestyle is giving up the foods they love, like pizza, or going on a diet. However, dieting is a set up for a oneway ticket back to the energy dense food choices you were consuming before you started that diet. No one enjoys going on a diet, because this leads us to a very hard food restriction on ourselves and stereotypically eating salads while watching the world around us enjoy the foods they love at dinner or social events. Healthy eating does not mean you have to give up the energy dense foods you love. In fact, when you follow the USDA MyPlate recommendations on the different food groups to eat daily, you can get all the vitamins and minerals you need in less than 1200 calories. So, if you prepare your foods properly, and say you follow a 2,000-calorie diet, that leaves 800 calories of energy dense foods for you to enjoy. When you give up your favorite foods, you run the risk of binging on it the next time you eat it, especially during a cheat meal. Then you gain all the weight you lost back and you’re back at square one. This skill does take practice, but if you can eat healthy and eat your favorite foods, isn’t it worth learning? Healthy eating can seem difficult and boring in the society we live in, especially when most people think they have to diet in order to live a healthy lifestyle, but it doesn’t have to be. And eating healthy meals does not always mean eating salads, even though a salad made right can be very delicious. While there is much venturing and creativity that comes with healthy eating and finding meals that are filled with nutrient dense ingredients, the end state is worth it. There are also so many routes to finding healthy meals, Pinterest, Instagram, Cookbooks, YouTube, and much more, you just have to want it bad enough to seek it, and the best part is you don’t have to give up your favorite cake in order to do so. Remember, your body is your temple, and what you put into it is what you will give out of it!

We all know that the pandemic stopped many lives stop Jole who works as a frontline healthcare worker and a Pilates business owner. She started working as a Pilates instructor during the first wave of the outbreak with understanding and even viewing the grand effects due to the limits with the continuous lockdown of the city.

It was quickly decided to venture out and take a stand, which led to her owning her own virtual Pilates studio. As an advocate herself of the environment of holistic health and wellness, she knew the importance of the fitness world, despite the closing of the gym(s) and recreational services. Especially for individuals who are mainly not able to leave their homes due to many elements such as health issues, childcare, and much more. Jole started her business entitled “ForeverFit by Jole” and it’s been an enormous and yet positive advancement and adjustment for everyone, especially for Jole as a business owner. Starting such a business has allowed her and those she has taught a large amount of personal growth. There’s no secret that there has been a global economic hit from the sudden pandemic appearance. Virtual fitness is becoming a needed and even the new and necessary normal.

Share an effective method you have used to ensure that participants perform skills effectively. The most effective method I use in ensuring my clients perform skills effectively has an initial consultation. Then I can understand their goals and what they are looking to achieve from FOREVER FIT. I highly advise them to do at least three privates to ensure they know the five basic principles. Understanding the foundation is key to injury prevention and proper execution of exercises to achieve their goals.

For 15 years, you’ve been in the industry of Pilates. When did you find the interest and the passion?

My interest in Pilates was found by scrolling through the pages of some of my favorite fitness magazines. I would use any free time in college to look for new exercise regimes to achieve a more muscular physique. One day I stumbled upon Pilates for Core. Once I started doing the exercises, I began noticing positive changes in my body. This inspired me to become a Certified Stott Pilates Instructor to start teaching my skills to others. I started with Mat Pilates, then Reformer Pilates. I keep current by doing yearly mandatory educational course workshops. This also keeps me updated on new exercises and equipment. What’s the official mission for “Forever Fit. “ The official Mission of FOREVER FIT is to spread the power of overall health and fitness globally through my craft. I want to inspire everyone, regardless of size, shape, sex, or ethnicity, the benefits of good health. If you have some mobility within your body, you can achieve balance through mindful movement exercises. As a Torontonian myself; what’s the difference between the Pilates culture and environment vs. other counterparts Toronto is a truly diverse city. Pilates Boutique studios are popping up more and more throughout the city, and larger gyms incorporate classes/ studios in their facilities. Pilates is paving its way into the fitness industry like other popular practices: yoga, boot camps, kickboxing, etc. I have discovered that the main crowd is still primarily women. Men are beginning to join classes based on the suggestion of their healthcare Practitioner’s recommendation. Pilates is steadily starting to bring more awareness of the health and fitness benefits that can be achieved through routine practice, which is encouraging both men/women to start practicing. In my observation, I notice that the people that attend Pilates make it part of their social club and lifestyle. 10

Describe an experience in which you identified the educational needs of your students and successfully developed a way to teach/train them. During a private session with the rehab client, she shared some of her symptoms that she was experiencing after a previous session. With that information, I was able to educate her on form and muscle engagement. Open communication could give her more direction through cues and education to help her prevent injury going forwards. What’s the upcoming projects we need to look out for? I am in the process of designing classes that are geared toward clients of various physical needs. My rehabilitation background has afforded me the ability to create courses that meet the needs of individuals with diverse physical needs. @foreverfitbyjole FEMI MAGAZINE

he thought of working out may seem like such an overwhelming task for many people who have hectic schedules, such as the responsibilities of parenthood and making little time for self-care. But don’t worry, FEMI Magazine has you covered! We’ve had an opportunity to catch up with Fitness Trainer Bianca Akosua, who leads by example by showing her audience that you don’t need an elaborate gym facility or equipment to achieve your desired fitness goals. Bianca shows her followers how it’s done from the comfort of her home. And she is ready to share with you some tips on how to get your fitness journey started. FEMI Mag: Looking at your Instagram page alone, I am inspired to find my running shoes and just start running around the block. You are in fantastic shape! What advice can you give to women who lack the motivation FEMI MAGAZINE

to get started and make that lifestyle change? B. Akosua: Thank you, I am humbled by your compliment. My personal Motivation is to Be My Best Self all the way around. And to me that includes physical health. I want to be able to enjoy life to the fullest and do things with my Child for as long as life is given to me. So, my advice is simply this: “Today was a gift and tomorrow is not promised, the world is yours if you get up and go get it”. FEMI Mag: Being a mom is a beautiful, selfless act that comes with many sacrifices. What

advice can you give busy moms who can’t find the time to keep a consistent workout schedule? B. Akosua: It’s definitely both. In my case I’m a single mom who works as well as studies and due to the pandemic, my son is remote schooling from home at the moment. And that means constant “mommy” calls, so definitely get the no time feeling. But ladies, we all make time for the things we want, so why not want to take care of yourself? If I’m not good, then I can’t take care of my loved ones. So, prioritize yourself in the name of love. All my workouts are at home due to the change in the 11

B. Akosua: For me personally I like my curvy body, therefore food is super important. You have to feed your body to keep it right. I start my day off with just about 1l water, do a workout and drink my “MommyHulkJuice” which consists of green superfoods and amino bcaas mixed with water (another 1l-1,5) so I have my minimum of Liquids in for sure in the day. That alone can be challenging but water intake is so important. Then I eat protein rich foods for lunch with low carbs or no carbs. And for dinner greens and proteins. FEMI MAGAZINE

Could the key to combating COVID – 19 be found in Vitamin D? Vitamin D is a hormone the kidneys produce that controls blood calcium concentration and impacts the immune system. Until recently, I had minimal knowledge believing that vitamin D was only a source from the sun and a nutrient that's found in foods such as milk and cheese that can strengthen bones. And to my surprise, vitamin D does so much more and plays a critical role in maintaining a strong and healthy immune system. FEMI had the privilege to speak with Dr. Leslie Ray Matthews. A medical pioneer who has conducted extensive research on the benefits of vitamin D and how it's vital to fight

off infectious diseases. Such as but not limited to congestive heart disease, aiding in killing cancer cells or abnormal cells, decreased hospitalizations, death mortalities, the prevention of sports-related injuries, inflammation in the body, and COVID – 19. FEMI Mag: Which is better to achieve maximum absorption of vitamin D, taking supplements daily or increasing the intake of foods rich in this nutrient? Dr. Leslie R M: Taking supplements is better to achieve maximum absorption of vitamin D3, because only 105% of vitamin D3 comes from the diet. Very few foods have vitamin D3 in them. Ninety


percent (90%) of vitamin D3 is produced by the sun striking the skin producing a chemical that goes to the liver and kidney to make vitamin D3. FEMI Mag: In the studies that have been published to date what specific beneficial impact did vitamin D supplementation have on COVID - 19 patients who had been vaccinated prior to contracting the disease? Dr. Leslie R M: Vitamin D3 is a hormone that modulates the immune response and the inflammatory response systems. You can't have a strong immune system being vitamin D3 deficient. In clinical studies, vitamin D3 supplementation reduced the mortality rate by 60% in those with coronavirus. FEMI Mag: Is it possible to take too many vitamin D supplements daily? If so, what are the negative side effects associated with excessive vitamin D intake? Dr. Leslie R M: Vitamin D3 toxicity is very rare. According to Mayo Clinic, most toxicities were taken when the dosage was mislabeled. Side effects of vitamin D3 toxicity are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, kidney stones, and mood changes, Vitamin D3 deficiency is more common than vitamin D3 toxicity.

Dr. Leslie R M: Vitamin D3 is a hormone that controls 3,000 out of 30,000 human genes including the immune response system. Vitamin D3 is the most important supplement and the workhorse for a properly functioning immune system. Other supplements can't hurt. @dr.lesliermatthews

FEMI Mag: Does vitamin D deficiency increase the severity of COVID – 19? Dr. Leslie R M: Yes. Vitamin D3 deficiency increases your risk of getting coronavirus by sixty percent (60%). Being vitamin D3 deficiency increases your risk of getting viral, fungal, bacterial, parasitic infections, and even some cancers. FEMI Mag: Exactly how much of this nutrient should an adult ingest daily? Is the recommended daily allowance for growing children different from the amount for seniors or infants? Dr. Leslie R M: The RDA for adults is only 800 International Units (IU) which is too low for most adults. The RDA for children is only 400 IU which

FEMI Mag: Which foods are the best sources of vitamin D and in what quantity? Dr. Leslie R M: Foods that are the best source of vitamin D3 are salmon, tuna, rainbow trout eggs, mushrooms, orange juice, and milk.

It is not an easy question, actually quite frustrating. Insurance makes it very difficult to get bariatric surgery, requiring long periods of visits, and sometimes feels that requirements are meant to discourage people from surgery. On the other hand they would pay thousands of dollars for complications of the disease: diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure and sleep apnea. In the past and even now, the cost of surgery was very high, 25-42k and I assume insurances wanted to avoid the expense. Now, in places like GeorgiaSurgicare/ IdealBodyInstitute we are able to lower the cost down to 10-13k and make FEMI MAGAZINE

My patients get a full evaluation and recommendations for best results. If someone comes in for liposuction, but I feel that we need to do weight loss first, I will not turn patients away. I will educate and sign them up for a weight loss program, so we can do all procedures in the correct and healthy way. Why do so many people regain weight post-bariatric surgery? Bariatric surgery is just one tool. Obesity is a chronic medical condition- like diabetes or high blood pressure. The moment you stop watching your weight, sugar, etc, the problem wants to come back. Good thing is that now we have revised procedures for people after bypass or sleeve, to refrigerate their pouch. ESG is a great tool and people may need to come back periodically to retighten the stomach if they start to see weight regain. All surgeries carry risks, but it appears that cosmetic surgery is extremely risky. Would you agree? Why or why not?

Every surgery is risky. No matter how small the procedure is, it must be taken seriously. Cosmetic surgery - like tummy tuck, does have extra risks, but part of the problem is that it’s an elective surgery for many, not an emergency. We may accept higher levels of risk when we have no other choice. When it’s elective, some patients feel that it’s not as serious. I’ve heard people say that liposuction is an easy way out, but in fact, liposuction has a higher risk than weight loss surgery.

it more accessible to all who need it. Is obesity due specifically to high calorie intake or are there other factors to be considered? Calorie intake is only one of the problems. We need to consider the type of calories. You can eat 2000 calories of sugar and processed foods vs. 2000 calories of natural fruits, vegetables, and healthy protein. Big difference. Stress levels in our society are very high and stress hormones will make you gain weight. It’s a Sedentary lifestyle...have you ever tried to walk to a grocer’s store and just carry your bags home in your hands... people would look at you funny. In spite of the increase in bariatric surgeries in the US, how can weight loss surgery be normalized in American society? At Georgia Surgicare /Ideal Body Institute we figured out how to keep prices standard and lower than any hospital in the area, also being very transparent on the pricing. People who decide to take their health seriously and start on a weightloss journey, can easily find out how much it will cost, and go through an accelerated program for surgery.

Also, there are a lot of people (doctors) who take up cosmetic procedures - but are not surgeons. Risks go up when your doctor is not fully trained - especially in the cases when something goes wrong. A part of women’s health is good mental health. To look good, is to feel good, how can women over 40 safely maintain their sexy via cosmetic surgery? I fully believe in a holistic approach. It is not just surgery that will fix our sexiness. It’s self-care starting early, this includes meditation. The earlier we start and realize that we are worth it, the better we will be by 40. Surgery is just another tool to improve what you already have. Make sure you get a doctor who cannot just do what you want but advise you on the best approach. Options for women after 40: marinating the skin elasticity with office-based procedures- lasers, microneedling, chemical peels, and use great skin care. Do visits to a cosmetic doctor every 3-6 month for maintenance (like going to a dentist), rather than wait till we have to do major surgery to “fix” things. Talk to a doctor who has many tools in the box. Do prevention earlier, then treatments later. Women take care of everyone and forget about self, give yourself some “you” time, some grace and Botox!

Education is very important, I still see lots of patients who have never heard of weight loss surgery. As a triple board-certified surgeon, how does your unique skill set contribute to successful and healthy weight loss in your patients? 16

I

ntense workout programs, supportive leadership, and spiritual motivation are the components of fitness trainer, Trell Griffin. His fitness program, R837 Lifestyle, has changed many people’s lives throughout the Gulf Coast. It began in 2018 with only a few members to train but it quickly grew into a success. The name R837 came from the Bible scripture Romans 8:37. It says “No to all these things that you are more than a conqueror through him that loved us". He uses that scripture as the slogan for his program. His program is very different from most; other than helping others stay fit, he also uses his platform to minister to others about Christianity and inspire his followers to never give up. Trell’s care and stewardship towards others keeps the people coming back every time!

Although fitness is his passion, it wasn’t always that way. Like most entrepreneurs, he started off at a decent 9 to 5 to maintain a way of living. One day, he was fired from that 9 to 5 and became discouraged about what to do with his life. That moment of hitting rock bottom gave him the faith that he needed to start his fitness program. Trell says that once God showed him his purpose, he decided to put it with his passion which was sports and fitness. Now that he’s going after his purpose with full force, he’s been excelling with greatness ever since. How long have you been a professional fitness trainer? “I’ve been training 3 years in all, one year professionally Full time.” Tell me about your fitness program? “R:VIII XXXVII(R837) Lifestyle was founded in 2018. It is a faith based fitness program that not only focuses on physical health, but also mental and spiritual health also. The fitness program mainly consists of hit and beginner level crossfit that yield great results with consistency.” What is your goal to achieve with your company? “My main goal is to have people more aware of Christianity and fitness. Also to help people of all ages, sex, and race achieve their fitness goals while at the same time implementing prayer, encouragement, and inspiration to help strengthen the mind and the spirit of God that rests inside of them.” Tell me about how you came up with the name R:8ight 37 Lifestyle. “The name R:8ight 37 Lifestyle derived from the bible verse Romans 8:37 ("No to all these things that you are more than a conqueror through him that loved us") How does your fitness program stand out from amongst the other fitness programs and trainers? “Well it’s faith based, drama free, and we always end in encouragement and prayer.” Tell me what motivates you to continue when business is not going according to plan? “I reminisce on the lives that are touched and changed and why I am doing this, for my purpose. teven Littles, who stars as "Jody" in the upcoming sitcom, "Miss Dee's Kitchen" is scheduled to stream on Amazon Prime in August 2021.

Two months prior to being tapped to direct, produce and act in "Miss Dee's Kitchen", Steven Littles was told he had TWO WEEKS TO LIVE! His doctors were preparing to admit him to hospice care to begin his end of life preparation. Instead of listening to his doctor, Steven Littles, an avid carnivore, became vegan. After two months, he regained twenty (20%) percent of his kidney functions and is thriving. We had the pleasure of discussing his journey as well as talking about his upcoming series, "Miss Dee's Kitchen."

We were sad to hear of your health challenges, how are you doing? Steven: Thank you! I've been doing very well since I was told this past January that I was in kidney failure and my life expectancy was only two weeks. That was over four months ago and I've regained over 20% of my kidney function. They were wrong, which makes me feel even better lol. I can’t imagine hearing a physician say, you have two weeks to live. Take us on the mental journey you experienced hearing that information and your decision to not follow doctor’s orders and literally take your life into your own hands. Steven: I was in shock! I had three doctors standing over me telling me that if I didn't go into immediate dialysis, they were going to register me for hospice care to prepare me for "end of life". I wasn't sure of what I should do, but I WAS sure that I wasn't going to begin dialysis. I had seen the devastating effects of dialysis on too many people. I knew I had to get out of that hospital, so I could make decisions without pressure from the

"experts". Against the advice of the doctors, I signed myself out of the hospital and went home. I was preparing to die, but on my own terms...not theirs. I informed my son and my closest friends of my situation and I issued my final directives, tying up loose ends so my son wouldn't have to. I was sitting on my couch meditating when a voice came to me and told me to go to a Chinese Herbalist. I immediately went to the Chinatown area in Los Angeles and found an herbalist. I explained to him my condition and he told me that he could create a personalized tea for me, but it wouldn’t matter what he created if I didn't go vegan. At the time, I was a committed carnivore. My go-to meal was steak. There were times I would eat two pounds of steak a day, five days a week. So, going vegan in my mind was almost, if not worse than dying. The herbalist, who is also a licensed medical doctor, explained that my body could not process animal

Healthy living is a LIFESTYLE and a lifelong commitment. You’ve had a phenomenal career working with some amazing people, what made you decide that you wanted to “stretch your comedic muscles?” Steven: I began my acting career in 2004 in my thirties, as a fluke. I was a very successful wardrobe stylist prior to that, working with Mary J. .Blige, Boyz II Men, Method Man, Queen Latifah and many, many, others. At the time, I was wearing a bald head. Being over six feet tall with a bald head, "worked out" body and tattoos, I was always auditioning for the role of thugs, criminals, or gang members. I was always told I was funny, but I was rarely given the chance to play comedic roles. Aside from my leading role in the movie "Robbin in da Hood", alongside Cocoa Brown and "Empire" creator Danny Strong, most of my roles were Correction Officers or blue collar workers. When Katrina Walker expanded the role of "Jody" in the sitcom, "Miss Dee's Kitchen" and offered it to me, I jumped at the chance to play him. You’ve produced and directed in the past, how did you find yourself in those roles again on the sitcom, "Miss Dee's Kitchen"?

Steven: I was responsible for casting for the principal roles on "Miss Dee's Kitchen". Katrina Walker, the Creator, Executive Producer, Writer and star saw my interaction with the actors we were auditioning and asked me to co-direct with her. This project was a boot camp with me performing many roles, including Director and Producer. I directed all 8 episodes of the sitcom, based on what Katrina Walker had been developing for over eight years. It was our pre-production work for the past three months that led to her dream project coming to fruition. I also have a project that is in post-production called, "Star Mapped". Written by Arthur W. French III, a very successful New York City playwright and starring Parnell Damone Marcano, formerly "Carlton Cruise" on OWN's "Greenleaf". I'm also developing my own sitcom, "The Bests", that I've written and created. A passion project that I'm working on with Executive Producer Sloop Jones and writer Danny Michael Bellini, is the biopic of blues legend, Fillmore Slim called "A Blues Tale: The Story of Fillmore Slim", which we are currently securing financing. What words of wisdom do you have for those who want to try new and different career roles but are afraid to try it?

Steven: Go for it! What you don't know, you will learn. You don't want to be one of those people who get to the end of their lives and regret all of the things they didn't do. Cora sat down with us to talk about her thoughts on healthy eating and exercise, balancing motherhood and health, and creating a positive image around body sculpting.

Do you feel there is a lack of knowledge in the black community about the seriousness of exercise & healthy eating? There is a lack of knowledge as black people. We love our soul food; so many people are still passing down those same soul food cooking practices. I would attribute the lack of seriousness around health in the black community to our culture. A lot of people are still set in their ways. However, I do see a shift in awareness. I notice more people shopping at Whole Foods, posting pictures with detox teas and a consciousness about how they look. With so many people using Instagram and watching TV, it plays a huge role in the way we see 22

ourselves, and how we want to look. I always tell my clients, regardless if they want to get plastic surgery or not, that they need to drink plenty of water, exercise, and wear their waist trainer around the house.

As a body transformation specialist, how have you handled working with individuals who would rather have surgery than to go through the norm of exercise to lose weight? How do you feel about those who think surgery at times is a better option than exercise? Now, I am not at all opposed to surgery. For some, there is no way around that loose skin. I just tell them that if you are going to get surgery, do your research. Make sure that you get to a licensed certified professional. I still let them know that with anything there is still a level of maintenance involved. I tell my clients it takes up-keep after surgery. It can take anywhere from three to six months after surgery to see a full body transformation. You have to understand that your body is still healing. You are going to have a lot of swelling especially since you did a full body transformation in just a couple hours. You have to give your body time to adjust. For example, taking cold showers for inflammation, drinking pineapple juice and wearing your compression garments. I just tell all my clients they must educate themselves to reduce any incidents from happening. In addition to helping patients to prep their bodies before going under the knife; I often suggest they get an lymphatic massage or try my body sculpting ice.

You have helped to rewrite how women take care of their bodies. Do you feel that motherhood & the work world plays a major part in women losing the drive to stay in shape? Having children is a beautiful thing, but for most women after having children it takes a while for them to get their body back. However, women are not seeing their results as fast. Juggling parenting and working comes with a lot of responsibility and can be overwhelming. Working a full job and taking care of the kids sometimes you catch yourself running to McDonalds to get some food just for you and the kids, then you're not eating as healthy as you’d like to. Being overwhelmed and these changes in your appearance, can have women at the end of the day just wanting to feel good and look good. Some of my clients say they feel better about themselves after getting surgery.

What inspired you to create such a positive lane for women when it comes to fitness & health? Has it been an easy journey? FEMI MAGAZINE


Because I am a mother first and business owner second, I definitely want to look good myself, and as a mother I know how it feels not to feel your best because of how you look. I had my last set of children close in age, one is eight while the other is nine, and it took such a toll on my body. My whole goal is to make women feel good and look good. Starting this journey has been easy because when it comes to anything beauty wise, everyone just wants to look and feel good; and my products work so no it wasn’t hard.

My slogan goes: “Before you go under the knife, try the ice.” However, some women still may not be able to use this option due to either cost or health issues. For others they choose to still go under the knife because some body goals cannot merely be obtained solely from the ice. Yet, many of my clients have an appreciation for their results after just one Body Ice Sculpting session. I tell my clients that everyone needs at least five sessions to fully obtain their body goals and see the greatest results. Of course, I always tell everyone that you still have to eat right, drink water and make changes to your diet. I actually found out about the body ice sculpting from doing research about the cooling machine. It was then that I found out that their machine was leaving skin burns on their clients’ skin. ecia J has been living with AIDS for sixteen years, and has begun to take over the social world by storm. Prior to launching her own brand, she worked in the music industry with some of your favorite artists. She used her influence to travel and tell her incredible story. In 2016, she became one of the faces of the Walgreens Campaign “Let’s Grow Old Together”, 24

and has since gone viral after the popular blog “The ShadeRoom” posted about her on one of their weekly inspirational posts. She caught the attention of Keke Palmer, who asked her to take over her Snapchat platform called “Love is the Gag!” She has become a philanthropist and motivational speaker, being on panels with Cynthia Bailey, Lee Daniels, and Meagan Good. Explain the Kecia J Brand and journey thus far? The Kecia J brand is all about two words…. TRANSPARENCY and EMPOWERMENT! When I decided to create the brand, I knew exactly what I wanted the foundation to be. For many of my followers is for me to literally have them walk through a day in the life with me while living in my truth. It has truly been an awesome ride as I have traveled all over to be able to speak my truth and share my story to various groups of individuals.

What advice do you have for finding a mentor and building a network? While creating a platform for yourself it is imperative to have an external guide that can be of reference and assist you with accountability strategies as you climb the ladder. For the past decade, I have been blessed to have a few pillars of the community who have helped guide me along the way. Having that extra hand of mentorship while you are walking down your path of purpose only enhances your journey to success.

It was and still is a very humbling experience as it opened the doors for individuals to reach out to me on my social platforms speaking their truths. The campaign really shed a light on the fact that HIV/AIDS does NOT have a certain age, race, creed or color and individuals who withhold those letters are truly living their lives and thriving while helping educate the masses.

When it comes to your health, you have bravely and thankfully taken a standpoint on giving awareness about AIDS, especially to our growing

generation. Do you see change on the perspective as well as updates on treatments for those who have been diagnosed? Awesome question! I am going to say this, because of the new technology these days it has afforded me a way to educate in so many ways. The general stigma behind HIV/AIDS unfortunately is still prevalent especially within the black community. Today’s generation are visual, and they love Tik Tok and SnapChat because they literally will spend the day learning on those platforms. It is great that I can team up with various entities in order to educate this new growing generation.

In terms of the treatment that is available for those living with HIV/AIDS, there are several antiretrovirals that are given at the discretion of one’s infectious disease doctor. Thankfully, we are so far advanced that the number of pills that someone must take daily can be

Explain the feeling and journey towards you becoming the face and forefront of Walgreen's campaign "Let's Grow Old Together." The experience of being one of the faces of the “Let’s Grow Old Together” campaign was indescribable. I say that because I honestly stumbled upon the situation while going on a lunch outing with one of my girlfriends in Los Angeles. I ended up walking into the casting with a friend who was there to audition for the initial commercial herself and upon walking in the casting director immediately gravitated to me without even knowing my story. He called me into the room where he started talking FEMI MAGAZINE

condensed all the way down to just one pill a day. When I first began treatment almost sixteen years ago, I took a total of 14 pills a day. I was to take seven pills in the morning, and seven pills in the evening.

In my opinion, when it comes to coming up with a cure or a vaccine for the HIV/ AIDS epidemic that is severely plaguing our communities, I do not see that happening anytime soon. Unfortunately, we live in a society where capitalism always is at the top of the totem pole, so because there is so much money to be made off the disease, I do not see a resolution coming to the table any time soon.

With you traveling the world and speaking your truth, has it been difficult educating people about AIDS? When I began to speak my truth, I knew at the very start that it was not going to be an easy journey. I am a black woman, at the time I was speaking on a platform that was within the entertainment industry, and I am openly speaking about living with AIDS. Needless to say, there were certain rooms that I have walked into where people truly were uncomfortable once they heard my truth, however for the most part most of the platforms I have entered into have embraced me with open arms! The more that I stand with confidence firmly in my truth and speak with conviction, the masses open their eyes and ears to learning more and breaking down that stage that the stigma stands on.

Take us on the journey as Kecia J, the philanthropic individual. The philanthropic world is truly the forefront of who I am. I have always wanted to be a vessel in the community. Initially, when creating my brand, I did so with the mind of helping women get to the other side of greater. While 26

advocating and working in the music industry in the management realm I made sure that even my artists not only just had a passion for their craft but also had a desire to give back. Over the years I have spent most of my work, speaking on panels for various organizations, one of which being the legendary female rapper Yo Yo’s “Take a Hand & Lead” leadership luncheon in Los Angeles, CA.

Social media has played a huge part in how I change the face of educating the masses. In 2017, I collaborated with KeKe Palmer on her platform. “Love is The Gag” in Snapchat and while taking over her page I was able to educate so many walks of life on how a woman living with AIDS truly lives. After taking over the platform the first time, KeKe got so much good feedback that they asked me to take over the platform numerous times. From that experience alone, it helped my lane of advocacy and philanthropy in ways that I couldn’t have imagined.

Aside from speaking on panels I have worked with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, AIDS Foundation Houston just to name a few. The goal while pouring into the community is to shed light on how the HIV/AIDS epidemic is vastly spreading amongst the community of young girls and women who are within the ages of 13-65. The more I shed light and bring awareness to my story while being transparent the more, I can also encourage communities on the importance of getting tested and nurturing self and indulge in “self-love”.

Since being diagnosed with stage 3 cancer last year, tell us the impact it has had on you. Answer: The moment Dr. Corlik and her team walked in and told me that the pain I had been suffering those past few months were from cancer, it truly threw me for a loop. It was honestly a different scenario than when I was told that I had AIDS almost sixteen years ago. Reason being is because now I am a mother. All I could think about at that moment was

about my daughter and her growing up without her mother. I felt like my life was truly going to change in terms of it being a new battle and new fight that my body now had to endure.

A few weeks after being diagnosed I had to go right into chemo and radiation therapy. The treatment was brutal, and it caused second degree burns below my waist. I was hospitalized twice throughout the treatment due to the severe pain that I had to endure. Throughout the process I lost 101 pounds due to loss of appetite. Most days I did not have the strength or the energy to keep going but it was the sight of my daughter that kept me fighting through the tough days. No matter how hard times got, I still had to remember that I had to be a mommy first, a businesswoman second in order to cater to my businesses at hand. There were many days where I did not know how I was going to make it through, but once I realized that my purpose was greater than my pain, I kept it pushing.

As a Survivor, Fighter, Businesswoman, and Mogul, what message would you like the world to know about you? My main message to viewers who read my story is to know that there is always greater on the other side. So many people always look at me and say, “you don’t look like you have AIDS, or you don’t look like you have been through all that you have been through”! What they fail to realize is that I am not supposed to look like what I have been through, I am supposed to look like what it means to have grace and mercy over your life.

Amidst your accolades and titles, tell us, who is Just Isaac… Just Isaac is a multidimensional light bearer. I AM a voice with a desire to bring change. I AM my own greatest enemy.

As the inspiration, Just Isaac discusses his new book “Think Fearlessly” that takes readers on a journey of determination, dedication and a dream… I have had many shortcomings, many struggles in relation to fear. However, I have learned to "Think Fearlessly '' and this has taken me into realms of success, and appreciation for life. Having peace in the eye of any storms or living above them can be difficult at times. Storms can be a representation of adversity, or obstacles. I believe our thought life can be altered. If we have the mindset of an eagle, we can use the storm to go higher in life. It may not be easy at times; however, the DNA of an eagle uses storms as an agent to glide into higher altitudes.

Just Isaac was destined to get into the entertainment industry as an actor and artist… Both of my parents have a history as entertainers, in the music industry. I believe this played some part in my life. FEMI MAGAZINE

I crave music with substance so instead of complaining and being only a spectator, I decided to become active in the industry writing and producing my own songs. When it comes to acting, I have an awareness of the intricate parts of my own makeup. I have been blessed with the ability to connect and tune in to my distinct emotional states, because of my life experiences and willingness to be vulnerable.

The need for good support and spiritual grounding… Throughout my childhood and teen years, an accumulation of life's circumstances caused me to want 27


we wear or focusing on our lack of ability, or even pointing out the defects of character in others. It was only through a genuine relationship with my creator. My life has vision and purpose through this.

What good mental health looks like in today’s society… I try to surround myself around people who speak good things into my life, who have a balance and understanding of constructive criticism. I distance myself mentally and emotionally from people who are negative even if they are family members unless the interaction and intentions involve us lifting each other up and or being an encouragement, we must never feel obligated to allow negative disruptions to find place in our sphere of influence. I believe that we must guard our hearts with diligence and keep the company of positive people.

amily is one of my core values. The word hits differently now, considering everything that many families had to go through during the peak of the pandemic. Many people are working so hard to not only make a difference in this world but to leave a legacy behind for their loved ones. Kamilah Alim- Secret comes from a family that has built a legacy from pancakes to sea moss. Secret is the CEO of Mossed Up: The Superior Nutrient Brand in Atlanta, GA. She was discovered in 1935, when she was cooking pancakes at a fairground in Syracuse, New York to support her family. As the “Aunt Jemima” brand becomes history due to changes in society. Anna Short Harrington's legacy continues to flourish in her family members. One member, in particular, is her great-great-granddaughter Kamilah AlimSecret. FEMI Magazine learns more about the legacy Kamilah is building and her Sea Moss empire. As I said, many people are building a legacy to leave behind for their loved ones. A goal of mine is to be consistent within my fitness journey. Especially since outside has been re-opening, right on time for hot girl summer. We are focused on Fitness and Health in this issue and Shaq Gurvin is the confirmation you need to start your healthy lifestyle. We get a chance to learn more about the trainer’s fitness journey and business. Fitness has been a passion of Gurvin’s since she was a kid. Seeing her dad’s muscular physique and how he would stand with such confidence motivated her even more. he fitness industry is growing with more and more women taking the steps to get fit, and to get the body they want. Beverly Johnson is a fitness instructor helping them do just that, but also teaching them how to use fitness as a way to channel their emotions and connect with themselves. From being wives, mothers, working full-time jobs and juggling relationships, the stress and pressures of the world can be overwhelming and so many women struggle with losing themselves and their identity. We spoke with Beverly about how she’s helping women get back to themselves and doing it through fitness. The focus behind the name of your motivational fitness business, Genesys, is to signify a rebirth for the often “forgotten” woman. Why do you want to cater to that group of women? It’s a season that every woman will experience. That season could include serving in the roles of parent, caregiver, spouse, or a combination of all FEMI MAGAZINE

of them. While we’re in those roles, we tend to take care of everyone else and place our needs on the backburner. It’s my goal to assist my clients to remember that self-care isn’t selfish. We cannot give the world the best and attempt to exist on empty fumes. How has fitness helped you when dealing with the stress and pressures of life? There’s some truth about the elders telling us as kids to “go out and play, you’ll feel better!” Studies have shown that exercise is a great option for stress relief. Between having a day job and a growing business, I look forward to exercising each day. One of the benefits of exercise for me is that it relieves the tension from the day. It allows me to clear my mind and manage my stress. The greatest benefit for me is that I sleep well at night. Why is it important for you to work with women 33

and help them reclaim their lives through reaching their fitness goals? My overall goal is to help my clients achieve a balance in their lives. Usually, whatever habits you develop regarding fitness often show up in other areas of life. For example, many women are hesitant to begin a wellness program out of fear of looking awkward or being vulnerable when learning new activities. Achieving your fitness goals creates a ripple effect that will be seen in other areas of your life. The impacts on our emotional, mental, and physical health are lasting. How do you balance your career and your personal life? I’ll admit that some days are better than others. I find my balance by intentionally deciding what will have my attention. That includes people, social media and how I spend my free time. I’m 34

faithful to using my planner and carving out time for myself. Those spaces are non-negotiable and reserved for me. I need those moments to rest and take care of myself. What are some tips you have for women struggling to stay consistent on a fitness plan? It’s not uncommon for women to struggle with consistency. There are so many things that demand our time. I would encourage women to find an activity that they like, we have a greater tendency to stick with activities that we enjoy. It’s recommended that we exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. MILES STROTER OFF THE FIELD & BEHIND THE CAMERA WRITTEN BY: CHAI WINGFIELD Miles Stroter is a former athlete turned actor, and according to him, the change was the best one he’s ever made. From playing under the big lights, to now being in front of the camera, acting isn’t Miles' only passion; maintaining a healthy lifestyle is also a priority to him. We caught up with Miles to see what big projects he’s working on, as well as how he’s managed to stay fit and healthy during the pandemic. Why the transition from football to acting? Have you always been passionate about acting? The NFL lockout happened during my senior year at Morehouse College. This prompted my agent to suggest that I play arena ball until the lockout ended. I signed with the Chicago Rush and played for 4 weeks when I randomly got a call from a casting director for a show called Necessary Roughness. She offered me a job for a recurring background role and at that moment I made the decision to pursue a career in acting. That is still one of the best decisions I have ever made! How have you maintained staying healthy during the pandemic?

I actually lost close to 100lbs during the pandemic. I changed up

my diet, added "juicing" to my daily routine, and just started to get more active overall. I’m now running 2.5 miles a day, riding my bike regularly, and actively going to the gym. I eat fewer carbs and I've added more fruits and vegetables to my diet. I also drink celery juice every morning on an empty stomach because it has amazing health benefits. What tips do you have for people who are trying to get in shape now that the world is reopening? Getting in shape is a process and you should take it one day at a time, one workout at a time, and one rep at a time. Getting healthy isn’t a trend, it is a lifestyle, and it's a lifestyle that starts with changing your daily habits. Just take it one step at a time. What is a part of your self-care routine? I start my day with fresh celery juice, then I hit the gym or go for a run. The most important thing is that I get active! What’s in the works for you career-wise? Any new acting gigs or appearances where our readers can catch you? I’m currently filming Season 2 of “Southside” which will be airing on HBO. Season 1 is already streaming on Amazon Prime. ALPHONSO NATHAN TELLS BLACK MEN, IT’S OK TO GO TO THERAPY WRITTEN BY: CANDACE GREEN

COVID-19 has done way more than just impact the physical health of the population; it has been a catalyst for a much needed discussion about mental health, especially in the African American community. Between the stigma that accompanies mental health, societies pressure for men to not speak on their emotions because it’s not considered masculine, and the almost shunning you may get for using the words “therapy” or “depressed” in certain households, it’s not hard to see why so many Black men may be struggling internally with mental health. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health (OMH), suicide was the second leading cause of death for African Americans, ages 15-24 in 2019, and in 2018, the suicide rate for African American men was four times greater than for African American women. Only four percent of the world’s psychologists are black, and an even smaller number are men. Mr. Alphonso Nathan is a therapist, author, and the Vice President of Brightside Counseling and Psychiatric Private Practices in the Philadelphia Area. He is a public speaker who’s topics range Black Trauma, healing, and cultural appropriation in the workplace. Currently, he is working on a campaign with Taraji P. Henson's Boris Henson Foundation, which focuses on youth. Representation 36

matters in all professions. Mr. Nathan realizes that male therapists would help other men feel comfortable about getting the mental health resources they may need. If this year has taught us anything, it's that getting the mental health you need is important. Despite this, minority males are least likely to take part in therapy. How can we convey the importance of taking care of your mental health? Representation from other minority males who have gone to therapy and are therapists, would help with bringing comfortability for others. What are some ways to educate the public on ending the stigma that going to therapy does not mean you are "crazy"? Having people understand that everyone needs to be aware of their mental health. Everyone needs to look at mental health with the same importance as Physical health. It all goes back to representation. The more people promote the importance of mental health, the less the stigma. Only four percent of the world's psychologists are black.

How does that affect people of color going to therapy? It makes people of color not want to go to therapy, because they feel that a therapist who doesn't look like them cannot relate. There needs to be more representation for therapists of color. What are some free or low cost resources for those who may not be able to afford quality mental health care? Black Men Heal

What sparked your passion for mentoring students that a traditional school system may have counted out?

What obstacles did you face while trying to get Evolution Academy started? How did you overcome them?

We train educators to adopt the educational philosophy that all children can learn when given the opportunity and experience. I saw a student group that deserved the opportunity to explore learning and mastery differently. Many of the students had given up on their education for different reasons. I believe it is never too late to invest in yourself through education.

As a startup, we faced many obstacles. It centered most on having enough startup capital to operate effectively. We overcame this by prioritizing the needs of the organization, seeking multiple revenue sources, and continued to monitor and adjust the strategic plan to address the organization’s needs.

Evolution Academy Charter School serves students who are over-age, under-credited, who have dropped out of traditional schools and those students who seek non-traditional instructional strategies. Our model includes caring professionals, individualized learning plans, a standard based curriculum aligned with dual college credit, career and technical training and a competency-based academic program. Since I founded EACS in 2002, it has employed an open entry and open exit model with students entering with varying levels of subject mastery. Do you have a favorite success story? Each student who completes their high school studies and receives a diploma is my favorite success story. Seeing the students move into the workforce, enroll in college or enlist in the military shows that Evolution Academy is fulfilling its mission. A huge issue with the education system is the allocation of resources for students of color. What are your thoughts and suggestions on how to change this issue? I believe it is extremely important to have a seat at the table when decisions and allocation of resources are being considered. 38

Michael Fanning on Entertainment and Body Positivity WRITTEN BY: CANDACE GREEN

Michael Fanning is a multi-media mogul who runs the platform ''Hey Mikey ATL” which centers on hot topics, news and advice. He began his journey into writing and entertainment as a writer and editor at Georgia State University. He then landed a gig with Kontrol Magazine, where he was the Fashion Editor, and then Entertainment and Online Editor. He took a step out and launched his own blog after realizing that entertainment was his passion. He also touches on subjects such as body positivity for men, which is a subject not much talked about. Body positivity is usually focused on women. How important is body positivity for men as well? Body positivity is important to men, however, many do not speak up for it or about it because they have been socialized to see the movement as female dominated and empowered. Body positivity is actually a human movement incorporating all genders, differently abled people, races, ethnicities, and body types--including the “fit” ones. However, we often make the mistake of conflating body image issues with body positivity. Body image stems from how you see yourself and believe the world at large perceives your physical body. Any issues of dissatisfaction or perceived inferiority when it comes to that aforementioned self-perception are body image issues. You can be body positive and not have any body image issues whatsoever. You can also have body image issues with yourself and still be body positive to others. A recent study showed that men now have higher rates of body image issues than women in general, and a recent poll showed that most men would willingly give up a year of their lives to have the “perfect body.” Do you think men are equally objectified in the media?

Historically, no I do not believe men were equally objectified in the media. Presently, more and more they are being objectified. There are more male nude scenes, frontal shots, and we have always had the shirtless, “fit” leading men in most heroic and romantic genres of entertainment. Also with the rise of LGBT content, you see even more noted objectification from a community with a distinct hierarchy of beauty and value based on masculinity and body type. If you look at most entertainment, media, and fashion men are objectified based on their looks and bodies as well. Just in 2020 it was noted how out of all the fashion shows for Fashion Weeks in the United States and Europe only one of them was a plus-sized male model. There are also studies showing the more attractive or taller a man is the more successful he is likely to be. Clearly, objectification and the consequences thereof, affect men too. How did you get your start in media? Could you describe any obstacles you had along the way, and how you dealt with it? I began doing media as a writer and then editor at Georgia State University’s “The Signal Newspaper” my freshman year at 19. From there, I created a portfolio and pitched myself to Kontrol Magazine. The editor-in-chief, Julian Lark, was so impressed with my writing that they hired me on as the FEMI MAGAZINE

Fashion Editor. I soon realized entertainment writing was my true passion and went on to become the Entertainment Editor and Online Editor. Readers and subscribers loved my stories, and my friend, Venus Miller-Austin, encouraged me to begin my own blog, HeyMikeyATL.com. I was nervous at first feeling as if no one would really value me on my own platform. Then after being denied a few promising video interviews based on my appearance, I decided it was time to create my own table. In just a few years I ran my own website and was promoted earlier this year to being the COO of Kontrol Magazine and merging HeyMikeyATL with it. The barriers I’ve faced have been people discriminating against me because I was a “big boy,” not wanting me to be the face of a project, series, or interview because of my size, stating “sex sells;” all while wanting my connections. Once I was even fired from a film for my size by a director, even though the casting director hired me for the role and I was the best audition they had in three weeks. Their words, not mine. I’ve also been compared to Wendy Williams for simply doing my job--writing about events that take place-even if they involved a friend or colleague. It makes people distrustful of you. Lastly, my own self-confidence and selfesteem were barriers to me. I was told so many times I was unattractive or not the right look for something that it kept me from trying so many different ways to put and keep my name out there.

my confidence by protecting peace and becoming a body positive advocate. Protecting my peace means leaving or dismissing whomever, whatever, whenever to keep a Zen state of mind. I’ve also distanced myself from communities of people where your sole value is based on abs, drugs, and whatever category they can box you in. My body positive advocacy has led me to lay the social media and charitable groundwork for “#AtAnySize;” a body positive organization and movement acknowledging men are attractive at any size and shape and providing resources to affirm them, a safe space away from negativity towards their bodies, and counseling. Lastly, I’m now transforming myself to hopefully change the system from within. I want to create opportunities for bigger men. Simply put, “The world doesn’t change, people change it.” -Angel Evangelista, POSE What advice would you give someone who uses social media as the standard for locating the "perfect body"? There is no “perfect body.” The media will tell you this is how you should look, but it’s all rubbish. You should look and be comfortable with yourself as is. Has there ever been a time you had to step back and check yourself about your own views on body positivity? No, I know how I feel and what I’m fighting for has me on the right side of history. Discrimination is wrong period. No one should be dismissed, or placed at a disadvantage to accomplish their goals and dreams simply because of their size. People act as if being big is a mortal sin and the cruelty is intolerable. All of that just makes me fight even harder.

Winger, Chase Anthony, Oliver Twixt and many others appear on various episodes. You will laugh, cry, and most of all have fun! In what ways have you struggled with loving the skin you are in when it comes to the media world and how did you regain your confidence? The media world is not kind to men bigger in size and shape. They aren’t viewed as attractive and therefore are devalued unless it’s in some comedic way. Not getting certain roles, jobs, hosting opportunities, or interviews was heartbreaking and damaging. I’ve slowly begun regaining 40

What makes your shrimp and grits so unique that they had to be enshrined in the Smithsonian African-American museum?

hrimp and grits is a Southern staple. But to be the chef chosen to have your shrimp and grits memorialized in the Smithsonian African American Museum is quite the honor. Celebrity Chef Carlos Brown is the owner of Shrimp and Grits located in Charleston, SC. Former President Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Shaquille O’Neal are just a few celebrities who have tasted the works of his hands. We spoke with the shrimp and grits expert about his Gullah Geechee roots FEMI MAGAZINE

What makes my shrimp and grits so unique is my special ingredient, cooking from the soul. I wasn't afraid to show my roots and was proud to show the Gullah Geechee culture while being myself. I wasn't intimated to show the history I came from. In fact, I esteemed our culture so much that they fell in love with what we're doing. 41


neighborhood with a mother who could take the most mediocre meal and turn it into the most extravagant spread. With her innate nature of cooking, she followed no recipes and never measured an ounce of ingredients while instinctively knowing what spices brought out the best flavors. This taught me one of the most important lessons, cooking from the soul. Now, I want to create those special family moments for others.

How will hospitality save the next generation?

The restaurant/hospitality industry took a hard hit since the pandemic. How were you able to pivot? I was able to pivot and navigate through the pandemic by doing home family shows/lives, selling my Gullah sauce, doing interviews, and community outreach. These things allowed me to bring families together by showing examples of love and inspiration, which drew them to me and my restaurant. Many have been exposed and educated by the docuseries High on the Hog, currently featured on Netflix. Have you seen the series? What did you think? What else would you want the public to know about the Gullah Geechee people and cuisine? Yes, I have seen it, and I'm actually working on a documentary myself. I think the series shows some really good history, and I believe the 42

conversation should now be how do we make our history better and grow from there. I want people to know that the Gullah Geechee people are a very unique people with a very special culture. They are artists within themselves. People should really lift their level of thinking when it comes to this culture. It should be treated like fine dining. Many restaurants make dishes like lobster mac and cheese or collard green spring rolls, where Gullah ingredients are the star of the dish. Gullah cuisine's value should be respected and appreciated without the expectation of being a lower price point than other foods. What did hospitality do for you? Hospitality took me back to my upbringing with my mom and grandmother. It took me back to those special family moments. I grew up on the east side of the projects in an underprivileged downtown

Hospitality will save the next generation by bringing families back together. Hospitality began in the home when families would eat dinner together at the table. Now, families eat separately in their rooms, offices, or the living room; and rarely enjoy a meal as a family at home. I want to bring the plates back to the table and the pots back to the stove, so to speak. Through my C3 Culinary Arts Camp, I'm teaching and training youth as well as special needs children the art of food. My hope is to restore the love of cooking for future chefs to cook from the soul, rather than just for a paycheck, to bring families back together through the art of food. I believe hospitality can change the world. Humble child tastes grace. How have you applied your mother’s saying to your personal and professional lives? Aside from God, humility is the single most important thing that has helped me succeed in the culinary industry. Operating out of a heart of humility coupled with hard work afforded me unthinkable opportunities putting me in places like being honored with Chef Carlos Brown Day annually on Aug. 23 in Charleston, S.C. and getting the keys to the city as well as working with many celebrities, including Viola Davis, Bo Jackson, Shaquille O'Neal and more. ac Solomon, a former athlete and deejay, has created a new niche in fitness and exercise - “hits for HIITS.” HIIT-ROBIX, Solomon’s online fitness group, combines the intensity of strength training and athletic movements with the aerobics of hip-hop dancing. The discipline and form he developed as an athlete are transferable to his clients that include Skhy Black from Tyler Perry’s “Sistas” and “All Queen’s Men” on BET and Simeon Daise of “All American” and “American Soul.” By creating an exercise playlist featuring the latest songs used in the viral Tik-Tok videos or heard at your local lounge, Solomon FEMI MAGAZINE

hopes to keep you engaged, energized and your heart rate elevated! We talked to Mac Solomon about how his program is changing the tone of fitness and exercise: You have found a sweet spot with your combination of hip-hop dance and exercise. Why is this important to you? I try to combine hip hop music with exercise because I feel like it brings out a different type of energy out of people that 43


Line dancing is a workout. How does HIIT-ROBIX compare? Our exercises are composed of strength training and athletic movements. Adding light dumbbells and step boards to the workout makes it that much more intense. Because it is still tempo based, the degree of difficulty increases. Your athletic history provided you with a foundation for discipline and respect for your body. How do you transfer that energy to your clients?

I try to lead by example. I never wanted to be the trainer who was out of shape who expected clients to do things I could not do myself. 2020 was the year of the pivot. You seemed to have pivoted a few times. What advice can you offer those who need a push to pivot? Don’t get caught up on where you should be. Focus on where you’re at the moment as motivation to get to where you need to be. Everything takes time! If you tell yourself, you will get there, eventually you will.

My ultimate playlist is whatever I decide to play that day. My playlists are a reflection of the mood I’m in so whatever you hear is the type of energy I’m on for that day.
