Measured Drawings
The object I chose is the sticks. In this case, the object can expand and contract by using a series of pin joints. So, I choose to measure three conditions of the sticks.
PLAN 1
SCALE 1:1
The first condition I measured is when the sticks shrink together. It is measured that the height of it is 900mm. The top width is 54mm and the bottom width is 120mm. The angle between two sets of sticks is always 40 degrees.

ELEVATION 1
SCALE 1:10
The second condition is in its intermediate state. It is measure that the height of sticks is 840 mm and the width is 1440 mm. The angle is getting bigger while it is expanding.

Analysis
The third condition is when the sticks expand to its maximum condition. It is measured the height of it is 450mm. The top width is 350mm and the bottom width is 1470mm. The spacing distance between two sets of sticks are 470mm at bottom and 225mm at top.

SCALE 1:10
From drawing, I have noticed that when sticks are folding, the nails are turning clockwisely. And when sticks are expanding, the nails are turning anti-clockwisely.
The movement of sticks follows parallelogram rule as the right drawing shows, so when it expands, the sticks become shorter, while the width become smaller. When it contracts, the height of it become bigger, while the wigth become smaller.

Polar array is quite important when draw the digita model.

Sketch Model
FRONT VIEWS By using a series of pin joints, the object I chose can expand and contract. So, I decide to use pins and sticks to make my models. Parallelogram rule has also been used in my model. The smallest element is parallelgram. By joining these elements together can make many other shapes, It is important to join sticks together by pins. To make it into a volume, I deepen the width. The finished model can expand and contract.

The photo on the left bottom is when it contract to its minimun.

Sketch Design #1 EXPANSION/SHIELD/FLEXIBLE What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
rubber -- make people more comfortable
The element of this idea is the triangle on the right. It can contract and expand by pin joints. The rubber on the top can also expand. So, it is easy for people to put it on. The material of the main structure is wood, so, it can also support itself. It is really flexible and the shield shape can protect people.

How does this respond to your personal space?

The sharp triangle and shielded shape can easily determine personal space; avoid other people approaching and observing.
Sketch Design #2 CUSHION/SIT/SUPPOET/PROTECT What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
The supports can expand according to people‘s needs. It is also outward tilt to protect people.
ELEMENT DETAIL
SIDE VIEW
For me, when I want to sit somewhere to sleep, the most difficult thing is to support my head. So, my idea is to create a pad that people can sit on and two supports to prop up people’s head. In order to protect sleeper from being disturbed, I design a cushion around the body.
This element is put around the body. People are not aware of what happens when they fall asleep. This is like a cushion, when someone else comes near, it can expand to protect the sleeper and to remind people nearby.
How does this respond to your personal space? This can expand accoding to people’s needs, which means people can create their own personal space. It can protect people from being disturbed and touched.

Sketch Design #3 WEB/SOLDIER/OPEN What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
BACK VIEW My idea is to create a coat like product to protect people like soldiers’ brass helmet and iron armour. It has three pieces aroud the head, one around each arm and a whole piece at the back. The web structure can expand according to people’s own needs. Steel and pins are used to make this.

DETAIL
SIDE VIEW
How does this respond to your personal space? The open web structure like the invisible boundaries. It look like cloth but its sharp pionts and its material can enchance its power.
