Meanwhile from India, Vedic astrologer Jyoti Arora analyses the chart of Bollywood heartthrob Shahrukh Khan, while Vaastu expert Surendran introduces soil analysis for luck and prosperity. Our lead story from Lillian Too this issue features the feng shui of your WALLS; yes, too often we worry about aligning our fixtures and furniture that we forget about

TALKING Phuket’s Wealth Sea ABOUT Dragon In Danger?
A
pparently, Chinese residents of Phuket Island are in uproar over a proposed traffic tunnel project cutting through Patong Hill, which if approved could slay Phuket’s legendary Hai Leng Ong (Sea Dragon) and destroy the good feng shui of this tourist island. A 40-million baht feasibility study by planners in Bangkok has suggested digging a tunnel through the hill to connect the townships of Kathu and Patong. The current route connecting the towns is dangerous and the new 2-lane tunnel offers a safer option. The Chinese in Phuket strongly believe that the island itself, shaped like a dragon, is the Hai Leng Ong, a wealthbringing sea dragon that has brought economic prosperity and success to that region. This belief is so entrenched within local folklore that a large statue of the dragon stands proudly erected in the middle of Queen Sirikit Park to mark its significance. Locals believe that the dragon’s snout is located in Laem Phromtep, and its heart lies within the centre of Phuket Town. The dragon’s body runs along the Southwest coast
of the Nakkerd range, which makes up part of the long and curved body. Those opposing the tunnel believe that Patong Hill is actually the belly of the dragon; and digging a tunnel will cut right into the stomach of the dragon and slay him forever. But famous fortune-teller, feng shui doctor and radio personality Ajarn Prasith Jantharasuth takes a more flexible and optimistic view, saying that the tunnel could actually be going under the heart of the dragon instead of across the stomach. According to the Phuket Gazette, he is quoted as saying “I have heard many times that people say the tunnel will kill the dragon and break the feng shui of Phuket, but I disagree. I think they should study the science of feng shui and the shape of the dragon in detail first before weighing in on this topic,” he said. Ajarn Prasith said that some believe it is the dragon’s heart, not the stomach, that lies inside Patong Hill.” Residents are now calling for spiritual ceremonies to appease the dragon in case the building of the tunnel should proceed. The feasibility is expected to be submitted to the council in November.

Already a Queen of Fashion, it’s no secret that Posh dresses for success. Soaring birds symbolise opportunities and elevation to new levels of success, and in the case of Posh Becks, there is no shortage of offers to advance. Feng Shui Mc Donald’s
Robe Lowe
According to the New York Times, Bryan Carmack, one of McDonald’s largest franchisees in the Southern California region, consulted a feng shui master when he decided to refurbish his McDonalds store, located in a popular Los Angeles commercial strip. Mr Carmack, who runs 23 McDonald’s restaurants, particularly wanted this one refurbished to reflect the Asian community that frequented his joint. The new design features curved walls, earth tones with red accents, tiles from floor to ceiling in distinctive angles and doors that swing open and shut in opposite directions to keep luck in the restaurant. Locals seem to love it and have affectionately coined it the “Feng Shui McDonalds”.
It seems that TV and movie star Robe Lowe hires in a feng shui guru to bless his trailer before he begins filming a new TV or movie project. Rob says he likes his workspace to have good energy and it doesn’t hurt to have good fortune on his side. He is quoted as saying “there is a lot to that stuff. A billion Chinese can’t be wrong...I like to get any edge I can have.”
Paula Abdul
Apparently, before the last season of American Idol was to begin live at the Kodak Theater, Paula Abdul claimed she didn’t like the “vibe” of the set. Insiders say she hired a Feng Shui master to help improve the flow of chi. Paula is also known to hire in feng shui practitioners like Marie Diamond to redesign her home. Perhaps her good feng shui could be responsible for Paula’s spectacular comeback into the spotlight via American Idol after so many years of faded glory...

Fine Points of Feng Shui

Lillian Too writes on the finer points of feng shui practice, simplifying some of the important aspects of this ancient living skill for modern living.
MAKE THE WALLS OF YOUR HOME
FABULOUSLY AUSPICIOUS
A quick and easy way to instantly improve the feng shui around you is to identify the few important WALLS in your home and office that could perhaps do with some attention; walls should be thought of as blank canvases which can be used to create auspicious ambience, the kind that lifts up your spirits. The positioning, layout and design of walls stamp themselves onto our consciousness and the more important walls in the home or office can create either excellent feng shui, or they can block good luck from flowing to us. Energy produced by walls can either be very lucky for us or they can be depressing. In this issue LILLIAN TOO puts the spotlight on the few vitally important walls that have the potential to bring extreme good fortune or misfortune, and thus are deserving of attention. The effect of walls on residents is almost subliminal, and these days, with so many modern ways of improving the feng shui of our surroundings, there is simply no excuse to get careless about our walls.

tart by studying the location of all the walls in your home. The general rule is that every room should have at least one solid wall. This signifies the abode where the spirit of the room resides; it creates the foundation around which energy accumulates, so how the location of this one wall interacts with the rest of the home has a great impact on the mood of the home; whether it is a happy enriching wall or a source of negative depressing vibrations. To make your walls of your home truly auspicious, constantly inspiring you and lifting your spirits, you need to work at making each important wall a strongly enhancing wall rand protect against it becoming a blocking wall that merely brings obstacles and blocking energy. So the first thing to take note of is the way the walls of the home have been positoned. When you start looking at your walls this way, your own common sense will immediately tell you which of your walls are enhancing and enriching and which are those that just do not seem right - just asking to be knocked down ! You can have more than one solid wall but rooms should not have solid walls on three sides; otherwise the room will suffer from potentially stagnating energy; where a shortage of fresh cosmic energy soon causes the room to suffer from yin spirit

formation. The room then becomes suffocating. Rooms must be airy and they should benefit from daily fresh supplies of cosmic energy . These must flow in from the great outdoors. Rooms devoid of this flow of replenishing energy tend to cause problems for residents. So there must not be too many walls blocking this vital source of energy. Rooms should ideally have at least one wall with windows; rooms that lie in the center of the home can suffer from a lack of cosmic replenishment so they should not have more than two solid walls. Then only can energy flows not get blocked. Remember that the center of your home should not suggest too much hemmed in energy. It should never become enclosed dead end space. This guideline to good feng shui is especially important in homes which are left empty for much of the day.
The important walls of your home • the WALL that directly faces the main door • the WALL that directly faces your bed • the WALL that directly faces the dining table • the WALL in the living area • the WALL you look at all day while working • the WALL behind you as you work • the WALL near the front door leading into the home

These are the major walls you can work on to bring incredibly good feng shui into your living space. Focus on each one in turn and consider the different ways you can enhance their energy so they become a source of contentment, peace and even inspiration. Think of the times when these walls leave a subliminal imprint onto your mind, stamping itself into your deepest subconscious minds. This is why the walls that hit you on a daily basis must indeed induce positive rather than negative thoughts.
You can use any of the feng shui tools mirrors, wall paper, wall decals, lights, paintings, photographs, murals, inspiring words and even powerful mantras all these and more can be used to enhance your wall. Some people even hang beautiful decorative images from their important walls. Or they glue on inspiring words, or carefully decorate their walls with auspicious decals that leave strong and powerful imprints. My walls are decorated in a variety of ways and I use wall decals a lot as these are subtle and unobtrusive yet so powerful in their positive effect. Enhancement techniques do not need to imply a permanence of decoration. Walls in fact benefit from being redecorated, repainted and totally revamped every two to three years.
I redo my walls regularly either with new decorative decals or with new paintings. And definitely the walls are repainted every other year. There is nothing I love more than clean walls that hint of fresh paint. This gives the whole living area a feeling of freshness that suggests good things are just beginning. I also make sure that my walls, and everything that hangs on it or is used to decorate it, never get dirty or dusty. These get wiped daily. Clutter and dirt are the principle enemies of good feng shui. This is why I am so compulsive about keeping all my spaces clean, free of clutter and never blocked. My walls always look pristine. Where I have installed a wall mirror such as for instance in my dining area to directly reflect the dining table and thus double our daily food on the table; or the one in my living area to double the yang chi of activity created here; these mirrors are wiped daily with a dry piece of newspaper ( this is an excellent way to enhance the mirror and keep it really sharp and clear). I also make sure my mirrors never gets smudged with dirty hands. The WALL that directly faces your main door should not have a mirror. A reflective surface here can cause all good luck to bounce right out again; it also brings illness to the master of the house. This wall should instead have either an auspicious image or it should be left blank. You can use a matte color to create a feature wall. For instance bright red wall that faces the direction South or an understated darker green directly facing East would be lucky. Choose colours according to the element of the facing direction of the door. Thus earth or yellow colour for doors facing SW or NE; Blue for doors facing North and metallic for doors facing NW or West. Colours can also be used to suppress some afflictive star number causing problems for your door in any given year. For instance this year, doors that face SW are afflicted by the 5 yellow, so a metallic colour wall directly facing the main door would be an excellent idea. Any wall that faces your front door, whether it is a complete or a partial wall, should always seem welcoming; it is auspicious when it makes you think positive or inspiring thoughts related to an important ambition or aspiration
www.fswmag.com
Walls that are in the living room area or the dining room can also be used to hang happy family pictures. In fact it is a great idea to select an especially happy picture of the whole family together, and hang this on a prominent wall in the house. This is powerful feng shui. It creates the feng shui of safety and togetherness for the whole family. of yours or it should simply bring a smile to your face. I do not have a wall directly facing my main door but I do have a two feet wide upper wall on which I hang a large plaque with nine golden dragons. This welcomes in beneficial chi and seeing it every time I come home makes me feel very welcome indeed. Then on the wall leading into my home I have used golden decals to create a flock of happy birds flying into my house. these are very tastefully designed and artfully placed by the designer who makes these decals - my niece in law actually, Audrey who is married to my nephew Han Jin. She has a great artistic gift which she is cleverly channeling into making beautiful artistic wall decals that really personalizes space in the most effective way. One of her best selling designs are exactly these birds that bring good luck and wonderful opportunities into any home. She tried them out for her own home first and since putting up these birds on the wall leading into her home, she has progressed in her career really satisfactorily. Her little online business is also growing very fast. More importantly, she has never felt happier or more fulfilled. Birds do have that kind of positive effect! Each time someone wants to sell a house for instance, creating the image of a bird on the wall here but now flying out with the price being asked for in its mouth is one way of attracting a serious buyer! Any wall that directly faces your bed should have a soothing ambience although some people have placed inspiring words or powerful affirmations here with great success. Doing this is like practicing 3D feng shui - as subliminal thoughts get implanted onto the sub conscious mind without you even realizing it.
www.fswmag.com
Each night the last thing you see before closing your eyes and each morning the first thing you see before becoming completely awake should be images or thoughts that make you feel galvanized, confident and very secure. Good feng shui always follows positive thoughts. And you can use your bedroom wall to plant these thoughts into your mind. This also leads to good pleasant dreams that is so good for your subliminal feng shui. Do avoid placing images of depressing or socially aware pictures
such as starving children, depressive scenes or other nightmare inducing images in your bedroom. The wall that directly face you at work can also be a source of affirmative words - although powerful words impacting on a busy mind cannot have the same effect as it does on a relaxed mind. If you work from home it is an excellent idea to face a water feature or a beautiful garden and if this is not possible, then simulating the presence of such would be most beneficial. Thus having a wall facing you decorated with a wall mural can be a great way of simulating the presence of flowing water or a harvesting scene ‌ anything taken from nature that suggests something abundant or lucky will always work well. At all costs avoid anything that can represent or signify an obstacle or which appears threatening. certain types of modern artistic renditions can be harmful so be watchful of the stuff you hang in front of you. The wall that faces me as I write in my home office is my prize Chinese painting of the 8 Immortals, each holding an auspicious object and having a wide smile on a happy face. Finally the wall that is behind you as you work is even more important as this wall represents support for you. Whether you are at home or in the office a wall behind you is always beneficial. An image of a strong mountain placed here suggests support for you. Do not hang a picture of a hole or at your back. It is also not good having anything hostile here. Refrain from hanging pictures of sharp edged buildings or wild animals behind you.

CYCLES OF SHOWBIZ STARDOM Present day A-list stars who remind us of BIGTIME NAMES from a previous era
E
verything in life is about cycles and nothing is as obvious as the cycles of luck that bring change and repeat attributes of some past era. In feng shui, the influence of time cycles is extremely significant, with each stage of the cycle characterized by particular phenomena, events and trends. Each time period favours different KUA numbers, different directions and animal signs, and each period will have its own set of heroes and heroines. Today’s celebrity culture is not much different from that of our grandfathers, and in showbiz, it is easy to detect patterns of discernible attributes that always seem to capture the popular imagination. It seems that it is always the same kinds of qualities that become trendy, fashionable and wildly popular. FSW spots some present day icons whose persona and aura exude an ambience that instantly remind us of some amazing past era diva.
Audrey Hepburn
One of the highly loved diva of the Sixties and Seventies is the incredibly popular and chic AUDREY HEPBURN whose air of vulnerability was so successfully captured in her movies, many of which have since become classics - Roman Holiday, Gigi, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Charade, Funny Face, My Fair Lady and a host of others. Audrey Hepburn possessed the best of a Snake lady’s attributes. Sensual without being obviously so, beautiful in an unconventional way and utterly appealing, she became incredibly popular. Her cosmopolitan appeal belied her great talent. Hollywood loved her and she worked with every top leading man of her era. She famously once said that every actress must be a little bit in love with her leading man. “You need to feel love to portray it, you can’t do it any other way but you can’t carry it beyond the set”.
Since her death in 1993, Audrey Hepburn has attained legendary status, voted by many magazines as the most enduringly remembered actress of all time. Images of her continue to be successfully used commercially and the little black dress she wore from Breakfast At Tiffany’s fetched nearly half a million pounds when auctioned in 2006. So far, no one has quite captured the attention of Hollywood the way Audrey

Hepburn did, although in the past few months, more than one influential Hollywood Director has compared the brilliantly talented Carey Mulligan, Oscar-nominated British actress star of An Education, to her. Definitely this young star has the same endearing qualities, and a similar air of vulnerability. But it is early days yet and we shall have to see if Carey Mulligan can live up to the hype currently surrounding her.

Marilyn Monroe
Then there is the breathlessly beautifully blonde actress Marilyn Monroe, whom so many swooned over. Marilyn was the object of every American male’s secret and not so secret fantasy of her era. Those were the days of the early Sixties when President John Kennedy captured the imagination of a whole generation of Americans and of the world. Marilyn was the most sexually appealing movie star of her time, but she is remembered since her untimely and mysterious death as much for her iconic Hollywood status as for the gossip that surrounds her much whispered but never confirmed love affair with John and Robert Kennedy. Till today, there are no pictures of the three together, but the affair was an open secret and the CIA is said to have had a hand in her death...
It is almost impossible to think of who amongst the present day group of actresses can actually be another Marilyn Monroe. For awhile, the singer Madonna fashioned herself after Marilyn but could not quite capture Marilyn’s special aura of sensuality. Perhaps a likelier candidate would be glamorous singer Gwen Stefani who comes closest to successfully cloning the Marilyn Monroe look.
Grace Kelly The incomparable Grace Kelly, the Hollywood ice princess who became a real life princess when she married the real life Prince Rainier of Monaco. The lady went on to personify European high society elegance and class. She never acted in another film after becoming Her Serene Highness, but her mystique grew with the years and long after her death, Princess Grace continues to be remembered as the epitome of stylish sophistication. She was born a Water Snake, destined for stardom and worldwide adoration, but also true to her paht chee, she lived a relatively short life …
Today, it is the graceful and soft-spoken Gwyneth Paltrow, Oscar winning daughter of Showbiz parents, noted Director Bruce Paltrow and actress Blythe Danner who is most frequently compared to the beautiful Grace Kelly. Now 37 years, she is regarded as Hollywood royalty the way Grace Kelly had been during her time. Happily married to British pop singer Chris Martin, Gwyneth lives in England with her son, daughter and husband. Many detect in her the same cool elegance associated with Grace.

Katherine Hepburn
A formidably talented star of the old days has to be the inimitable Katherine Hepburn who holds the record for winning the most number of Best Actress Oscars - four actually - as well as a total of 12 nominations. She was the ultimate leading lady; probably the most decorated of Hollywood icons. In her cupboard are not just Oscars. She also won grammys, Emmys, golden globes and Tony awards - all for acting. But she was prominently anti-Hollywood, completely unconventional, and always outspoken. She prided herself on being something of an intellectual and her sharp tongue made her unpopular with the Press. Despite her prickly nature, Katherine Hepburn was always respected, and by the time she died in 2003 at the age of 96, she had mellowed considerably.
Today, the nearest thing to a present day Katherine Hepburn is the incredibly talented Australian actress Cate Blanchett. She too has won multiple acting awards including two SAGs, 4 Golden Globes as well as an Oscar for best Actress. But unlike her legendary namesake, Cate Blanchett is incredibly popular with the powers of Hollywood, so she gets to work with many of Hollywood’s top leading actors and directors. She has even worked alongside Katherine Hepburn in The Aviator and demonstrating her wish not to be typecast, she has also appeared in the Indiana Jones sequel, the Lord of the Rings trilogy and more recently in the Ridley Scott remake of Robin Hood alongside fellow Australian Russell Crowe.

Feng Shui and the Philippine Marites Allen Provides a Helping Hand By Chit A. Tribiana
M
arites Allen’s star is shining brightly in the Philippines and i n t e r n a t i o n a l l y, where she practices feng shui like no other. Typical of most times, last month saw her work calendar groaning with pictorials for different newspapers and magazines, not to mention guest appearances for television shows. One such show and another newspaper article had her touring the Malacanang Museum and reporting on the feng shui of the official residence of the Philippine president. At the time of this interview, Marites is currently doing feng shui consultation work in Netherlands, Germany & in London, UK. But these nuances of fame did not come easy. In a recent article for a glossy lifestyle magazine, she narrated how she successfully hurdled the challenges posed by skeptics, observing that almost all feng shui masters she has studied with had to face the same dilemma. Today, she noted that the same practitioners ‘are being consulted by people who matter.’ In the case of Marites, the people who matter compose a veritable A-list of Philippine society. Every year, her Feng Shui Convention is a gathering of loyal followers from the business, media and entertainment, and social circles. She does not hide

These include two past Philippine presidents, Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada, the Forbes List billionaire Henry Sy, celebrity princess Tessa Valdes and business icon Mr. Washington Sycip, founder of SGV & Company, a leading auditing consultancy firm in Asia. One of the most popular among her clients is her celebrity friend – Queen of all media Ms. Kris

Kris is also a fan of the annual World of Feng Shui calendar, a ‘must have’ for feng shui followers, published by the world-renowned Lillian Too of Malaysia. In fact according to the Philippines’ King of Talk - Boy Abunda, who co-hosts Marites’ Feng Shui Conventions, his best friend Kris will sign a major contract or commit to activities only if the feng shui almanac indicates that it is auspicious to do so. Kris is the youngest daughter of the beloved former Philippine President Cory Aquino who succumbed to complications of colon cancer last year. It was this close association with the president’s daughter that gave Marites some of the most defining moments and lasting experiences of her feng shui career so far. In 2008, Kris requested Marites to do a destiny reading for President Cory. Among other things, Marites

K r i s then asked Marites to look into her mother’s chart again and identify critical periods so that they would be ready for the inevitable. Marites then did as instructed; a careful analysis and listed some days in July. “I remember highlighting a date, August 1, because it was an extremely strong Earth day; the month and year pillar clashed, and the Tiger day clashed with her Monkey sign,” Marites recalls. On hindsight, she noted that the time of President Cory’s death, 3:18 a.m. on August 1, 2009, was a Tiger hour which clashed with the Monkey. (More details on the paht chee chart and other events related to President Cory’s last days may be viewed at www.maritesallen.com). While the Philippines was still mourning her death, there was a growing clamour for her only son, Senator Noynoy Aquino to take up the cudgels for political change and lead the nation as President. Again, Marites was requested by Kris to prepare a destiny analysis to assist in the decision process for Noynoy to take up the challenge. For the record, however, Marites

Simon Cowell
& the X FACTOR
GETTING READY TO RECONQUER AMERICA sans IDOL
Simon Cowell is a household name to anyone who watches free-to-air TV almost anywhere in the world. Love him or loathe him, this sharp-talking Earth Boar is probably the biggest name in music, if not the most powerful. While regarded by many as possessing a genius for spotting talent and nurturing quite ordinary people into huge international stars, he is himself not a performer. Instead Simon Cowell’s talent seems to be in judging; and he has been the most prominent judge in contemporary TV’s biggest musical talent shows. It has been American Idol of course which really catapulted him to international stardom. His other Shows Britain’s Got Talent and The X-Factor are also popular, but nothing compares with Idol. Simon is generally credited with much of the success of Idol and now he is hoping to ride on this great success and bring Britain’s X Factor to America, and ultimately to the rest of the world. Can he, will he succeed ? HONEY LIM checks Simon’s luck this year and next.

ell, they say the road to success is long and winding and this has certainly been true for Simon Cowell’s career! It is hard to believe but this man started working life in the mailroom of EMI records after his father successfully pulled some strings to get him hired. But Simon learnt the ropes quickly and soon graduated to music publishing. In the early 1980s, he left EMI to start his own company E&S, in partnership with his former manager. E&S had moderate success producing some top UK40 hits, but the partnership ended when Simon left to work for Iain Burton of Fanfare Records. At Fanfare Records, Simon got his real break by making it to partner and grew the record label into a successful

This was his astrological conflict year, and it marked the end of his time with Fanfare when its parent company went into financial jeopardy and was taken over by BMG. Simon was so deep in debt he had to move back into his parents’ home. But nothing could keep this Earth Boar down for long. Simon Cowell bounced back in no time. For the next 14 years, he worked hard as an independent consultant to BMG and S-Records, and brokered deals, signing up some of Britain’s most successful artists including Curiosity Killed the Cat, Westlife, Five, Ultimate Kaos and Sonia Evans. In 2002, the Year of the Horse, Simon set up his own record label Syco. Syco went on to become part of record giants like Columbia Records and Sony BMG Music Entertainment and has given the world fresh and enduring performers like Il Divo, Leona Lewis, and more recently, Paul Potts and Susan Boyle. But it wasn’t till the Year of the Dog in 2006 that Simon scored big time. That year Simon agreed to be

This Year of the Tiger 2010 marks an auspicious turning point in Simon’s life. Mezhgan is not as famous as Simon or Paula, but this sophisticated Ox lady is set to make it big in the cosmetics world having launched her own line of makeup carrying the first two letters of her name “Me”. Money luck for the Ox is slow-going this year, but she is in for a fabulous 2011 and her intimate connection with a heavyweight like Simon should lift her profile in the coming years - that is if she can manage to hang on to Simon.
The Tiger (Paula) and the Boar (Simon) are secret astrological friends, so if we were her, we’d keep our eyes and ears open for any secrets between them, be it private or professional! Asian Designers Taking America by Storm WEARAbLE ART bY MANIsh ARORA

ailed as “the John Galliano of India” by the Daily Telegraph, Manish Arora, India’s top fashion designer has taken the fashion world by storm with his stunning and colourful collections. A former student of the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi, Manish launched his own label in 1997. Today, he is likened to Dali of wearable art, and his clothes are stocked in the most expensive and prestigious fashion outlets of New York, London and Paris, and carried in more than 84 stores across the globe. The New York Times has even crowned Manish Arora as the first Indian designer to build an international brand. On the catwalk, Manish’s creations are eye-catchingly distinct, featuring stunning psychedelic rainbow colours, mantra Om motifs, combined with traditional Indian embroidery and beading in Western designs. While fashion world is fascinated by his bold use of colour and clever fusion of mixing of eastern fabrics in western styles, we simply adore his work for his auspicious use of the mantra Om and hand mudra postures, in gorgeous, electrifying colours that bring auspicious yang energy to its wearer. Perhaps it’s these features that have brought him such great good fortune and has removed all his obstacles to success! The mantra Om creates extensive merit and brings success to those who chant or wear them, and even more to those that help make them accessible to all sentient beings. 10 years of good fortune doesn’t just come by for anybody! For Manish, his good fortune began in 2000, the Year of the Golden Dragon when he was chosen to debut his collections in the Hong Kong Fashion Week and India’s first Fashion Week in New Delhi. His success there earned him enough to open his first flagship store “Manish Arora Fish Fry” after launching “Fish Fry” his second successful label. “Fish” as we know in feng shui terms, means abundance and it’s no surprise that business for Manish really flourished under this label. Manish launched his second flagship store in Mumbai shortly after and soon established a successful international fashion business with his clothes being sold in Lord & Taylor of New York and Maria Luisa of Paris. “Fish Fry” multiplied abundantly over the next few years. After Manish garnered the Best Women’s Prêt Designer award at India’s 2004 Fashion Awards, MC2 Diffusion Paris agreed to carry his label. In 2005, Manish won the Designer’s Choice for Best Collection award at Miami Fashion Week and caught the positive attention of the media, earning him multiple offers by several major buyers. He then teamed up with sports giant Reebok to produce their highly successful line “Fish Fry for Reebok”. In 2006, Manish celebrated the opening of his first Manish Arora franchise store in Villa Moda, Kuwait and another Fish Fry store

Meanwhile, the Period of 8, with the Trigram Ken (Young Man) continues to offer us even more young and rising designers that originate from the Northeastern Asian Regions of the world. We have already heard of Jason Wu, the young Taiwanese designer whose dress Michelle Obama wore in her inauguration as First Lady. But he’s not the only young Asian designer who dresses the First Lady. Another up and coming favourite is Prabal Gurung, a newcomer who is poised to make his mark! Prabal Gurung, a Nepalese who was born in Singapore and raised in Katmandu, broke away from more traditional career paths to pursue fashion seriously as a career. Like Manish Arora, Prabal studied fashion design in the National Institute of Fashion Technology of New Delhi. Prabal even worked for Manish Arora before joining New York’s prestigious Parsons’ fashion school which has produced designers like Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu and Bill Blass. The Year of the Dragon 2000 marked the start of Prabal’s rise. It was this year that Prabal won the Best Designer competition between Parsons and the Fashion Institute of Technology. His work commanded such notice that the following year, he was asked to open the competition with his own collection of 15 looks. This caught the attention of famous designer Cynthia Rowley, who hired him on the spot, ending his internship at Donna Karan. Prabal spent three years with Rowley before being headhunted to Bill Blass. At Bill Blass, he became Head Design Director, producing some of Blass’s most signature designs. Blass’ parent company went into financial trouble, so Prabal decided it was time to go out on his own. After 10 years of working for top designers, Gurung stepped out to create his own label. In the midst of a recession, help poured in from everywhere. Gurung says he learnt how good clothes should be made during his stint with Bill Blass and Rowley, so his creations are made for the elegant woman of power who loves to wear clothes made of enduring and expensive fabrics. Says Prabal “I’m going after the lady who wants to look beautiful and wear her clothes rather than have her clothes wearing her.” Gurung’s creations soon made his way to celebrities like Demi Moore, Zoe Saldana, Rachel Weisz and Oprah Winfrey. Gurung credits the moment he became known in Hollywood to Demi Moore’s tweet in May that she was wearing his creation. But it wasn’t until Michelle Obama was snapped wearing his red hot dress in her inaugural dinner that really elevated Gurung into fashion celebrity status of his own. Red is the colour of fame and recognition, and Gurung’s famous red dress has made it to all the top newspapers and fashion publications. Shortly after, Prabal was nominated for a CFDA (Fashion Oscars) award! We look forward to seeing more elegant and enduring creations from Prabal.

the feng shui of MONEY Is there such a thing as the Money of a country affecting its wealth feng shui? Is there any relationship between how a country’s paper money looks and the wealth the country generates? Surely symbols incorporated into the design of currencies must have an effect on the way the country moves forward or backward economically. Central Bankers of the world probably scoff at such an idea… and yet in the old days, coins used as mediums of exchange were always made auspicious, most notably containing the heaven and earth symbols of circle and square. In this issue, FSW does some research into the currency designs of the Dollar, the Euro, the Pound sterling, the Russian rouble, the Chinese Yuan, the Japanese yen and the Singapore dollar... and because we live here in Malaysia, we also take a look at the Malaysian Ringgit …
S
ome of the stronger currencies of the world (although of course they fluctuate in value) include the United States dollar, the Euro, the British pound, the Singapore dollar, the Australian dollar, the Russian rouble, the Canadian dollar, the Chinese renminbi and before the advent of the Euro, we also had the Swiss Franc and the German mark. Every one of these currencies has a signature sign which itself has luck connotations. In the period of 7 the US dollar was strong and this is a currency whose signature sign has an S with two vertical standing lines viz $… but the US dollar has been declining in value for several years now, from since the period changed from 7 to 8 and now other currencies

that have signature signs that have either S, Y, (all cut with two horizontal lines appear to be challenging the US dollar. We saw the rise of the pound sterling, and until recently the all-powerful Euro. Now we see the rise of the Chinese Yuan, and of course the Japanese yen seems to stay strong in spite of horrible things happening to its Economy! Feng shui experts will be quick to explain to you that the horizontal lines symbolize the powerful chien trigram. Horizontal solid lines are indications of strength, yang chi and great resilience, and it is not surprising that currencies which have this as their identifying feature tend to have greater resilience. Think of the yen, the yuan, the Euro and even the pound sterling!

CHINA’S STRONG FENG SHUI THEME
Most countries have strong themes that run through the design of their currencies and these usually reflect some symbol, activity or hero strongly identified with the country. The use of beloved leaders is a popular theme. So the modern Chinese renminbi has a picture of Chairman Mao, but also take note that while all the notes have his picture, they also carry aerial shots that symbolize protection, wealth creation and strong central government. Its most popular note the 10 Yuan note is green in colour, signifying growth, but it also has an amazing aerial shot of the Lijiang River strategically photographed to show the river widening. This is an incredibly auspicious image and with the 10 Yuan note having amazingly high circulation as it passes from hand to hand, surely this note brings excellent feng shui to the Chinese Economy!
Showing a mighty river flowing to signify money signifies the country’s wealth. It should not be surprising that since the early 80’s when these new currency notes came into widespread usage after Deng Xioa Ping declared “to be rich is glorious”, China has had double digit growth and indeed is today the wealthiest country in the world! But more than wealth is safety and security, which is symbolized by the Great Wall of China, an ancient heritage structure built to protect the country from overland invaders. Today, the Great Wall symbolizes China’s security. This note has a couple of young Chinese on one side and the Great Wall on the other, signifying the ordinary people of China. And the high denomination renminbi note is red in colour. This too has Chairman Mao on one side, but on the other side, we see a picture of the Great Hall of the people in Tiananmen Square. This symbolizes the strength of China’s Central Government. By analyzing the images on its currency, we can deduce the attributes that are important to China - strong Government, strong security and strong wealth - all of which China has today! Definitely in this case, we can see symbolic feng shui at work here. But there is more of course, because there are also other 100 Yuan notes that feature the mighty Dragon and yet more notes that feature the other great river of China, the Yangtze Kiang. Water and Dragon - two of the most potent symbols of wealth and success!
HONG KONG’S AUSPICIOUS NOTES
In fact, on the reverse side of all its notes, capitalist China has selected scenes of spectacular water – on the 20 renminbi note is the famed Lijiang River, on the 5 and 10 renminbi notes are its other famous rivers, the Yellow River and the Yangze, and on its 50 renminbi note is a spectacular picture of a waterfall. As all feng shui enthusiasts know, the river is the most efficient bringer of wealth. All the great cities of the world were founded at the mouth of great rivers. That China should choose water as its major symbol to signify its money must surely be very good feng shui indeed. To the Chinese of course, a view of a river, or of water, always signifies wealth, and when water widens and expands, it means extreme wealth.

Over in Hong Kong, the currency notes of this city state were issued by the major banks operating there prior to 1997 and these continued to be used after China took over the colony. Then, the twenty dollar note issued by StanChart featured the Dragon Tortoise, while that issued by HSBC featured its famous lions and the star ferry. The StanChart 500 dollar bill features the awesome Phoenix, while the HSBC issued 500 dollar bill again carried the two lions and its building. These notes were very auspicious indeed and Hong Kong in those years was very prosperous. In recent years however, its fortunes have been overshadowed by Shanghai and Beijing. China’s currencies and its Economies appear to be doing as well as if not better than Hong Kong !
WHAT ABOUT THE UNITED STATES?
In recent years, the USA seems to be sliding… two unpopular wars and its fight against terrorism seem to have distracted this great country. Worse, it has also suffered severe financial meltdowns caused by scandals and major bank collapses that seem to have shaken the USA to its roots. Things really went downhill after the attack on its twin towers in New York. To the Chinese feng shui enthusiasts, the twin towers represented the eyes of the country, and with New York being its financial capital, after the twin towers were brought down, it does seem like the US, now
www.fswmag.com
blinded, sort of lost its way - especially financially. The US currency is known worldwide as the greenback because irrespective of the denominated amount, all US dollar notes are green in colour. Note that green denotes young Yang Wood element, which in turn signifies growth. The USA continues to grow and grow and it has become the world’s super power, and even with all its troubles today, it continues to be respected as a superpower, feared by others and still taking the lead as the world’s innovator. It also owns the world’s largest arsenal of weapons and bombs! All its currencies feature its past presidents. Its most widely circulated note is the one dollar bill which features George Washington, the first president on one side. On the reverse side, we see the American eagle and the pyramid with an eye at the top of the pyramid. The eagle is like the phoenix – symbolizing untold opportunities, bravery and courage. The pyramid and the single eye above it is the ultimate symbol of protection. It reminds us of the magical eye of Horus. It is also a protection against the envy of others. Very powerful feng shui indeed! The two dollar note (not as widely circulated) features Jefferson on one side, while the five dollar note (which is more widely used) has Abraham Lincoln. Behind is the Lincoln memorial, which of course symbolizes freedom and equality. The twenty dollar note features Jackson on one side and the White House on the other. The hundred dollar bill has Benjamin Franklin… so one can see that the United States places emphasis on its leaders, although this only started around the 1900s. Does the US dollar have good feng shui? The answer has to be a resounding yes. Despite the ups and downs of its economy, the USA is still the most powerful and important country in the world. Its currency though battered continues to be the most widely used currency of the world. What is interesting about the US dollar bills are its hidden codes and meanings. These notes have not been redesigned since the 1900s, so much of the meanings of its symbols require research. Nevertheless, one interesting thing some of us noticed is that the symbols on the $20 does show the twin towers of 9/11 burning when folded in a particular way. It is quite uncanny actually, and those of you curious enough to check this out might want to try! Other symbols on each of the US dollar bills suggest hidden codes and meanings as well. The British pound uses the Queen’s image and a variety of auspicious symbols. The Queen is herself a lucky image as she is shown in full regalia wearing her tiara and jewels, so the matriarchal energy is very strong. If we examine the ten-pound note (which is the most highly used) there is a
www.fswmag.com
bird image which looks like a woodpecker. The bird is a very auspicious symbol, bringing luck and new opportunities. The woodpecker is a hardworking bird that is also creative. There is also a ship sailing towards the user and this has to be incredibly lucky. There is a picture of Charles Darwin, one of their greatest scientists and the propounder of the theory of evolution. There is also a round mirror. So you can see that Britain has some very important enhancing symbols on their pound note. Singapore money used to be full of wonderfully auspicious images. Fish, birds, dragons and ships of all kinds used to feature on the Singapore dollar notes, but in recent years, Singapore’s paper currency notes were given a fresh new look. During the years when Singapore was toasted as the economic miracle of the world, its currency notes were amazingly brilliant and beautiful. Every denomination had a fish of some kind, as well as a ship, and its fifty-dollar note even featured a dragon looking down at the mouth of the Singapore River (see bottom picture). These are auspicious symbols.

Many of the Commonwealth countries feature the British Queen thus replicating the powerful matriarchal energy. New Zealand money features the Queen on one side and all kinds of birds on the other. Shown here on its twenty dollar bill is the bird that is native to new Zealand, the karearea – very auspicious indeed.
All the previous notes used to have fish on them. Fish signify abundance and it should not come as a surprise to anyone to know that the per capita income of this small nation state is one of the highest in the world. The Dragon meanwhile is the ultimate auspicious symbol according to feng shui. And ships bring wealth from the winds and waters. Shown above are the old (top) and the new (bottom) two dollar notes. Note the difference. A sailing junk brings prosperity from the winds and waters. The new note has no such auspicious symbol. In its newer notes, the Singapore currency features its first past president on one side and a variety of aspiration scenes on the other side. For instance, on the fifty-dollar note, the Arts are highlighted with musical instruments, on the ten-dollar note Sports are featured and on the two dollar note Education is highlighted with a picture of one of its schools. It does appear that aspirations other than wealth acquisition are being stressed. And believe it or not, since those new notes came into circulation, Singapore has thrived as an Arts and Cultural center to challenge the best of any place else in the world. From musicals to concerts, rock shows, ballets and even operas, Singapore has become the most sophisticated city in this part of the world. What is interesting is that all the new notes still carry the Pa Kua symbol which is a powerful symbol of protection! So security continues to be high on the list of Singapore’s priorities. Malaysian ringgit - here in Malaysia, the currency features the country’s first king in all his regalia. His majesty wears an eleven-pointed star and a moon of jewels, so this is most auspicious indeed. On the reverse side, the Malaysian currency notes feature cargo ships loaded with cargo, planes and trains on its ten dollar bill. As this is the most widely used bill, these symbols of the country’s progress are excellent feng shui. The fifty-dollar note shows a port scene, while the hundred ringgit bill features a car assembly plant. The Malaysian notes are thus down-to-earth symbols of industrial progress.

Canadian bills are similar to Kiwi money in that the British Queen is featured on one side and all kinds of birds on the other side. The twenty dollar note shows the Queen (alas sans crown but wearing pearls) on one side and a pair of what looks like ducks on the other side. Very romantic feng shui indeed. The five dollar note on the other hand has Laurier instead of the Queen on one side and a kingfisher on the other. Indonesian Rupiah bills seem to be devoid of auspicious symbols. On their 5000 rupiah note, they feature a old member of royalty on one side and an old building on the other. On their 1000 rupiah bill, we see again an old member of a royal family on one side and a building on the other. The notes seem to dwell very much on the past and are sadly lacking in yang energy. Maybe that is why the country has not progressed much. Perhaps a change in their currency appearance might help lift the country out of its many difficulties. Nepal and India also do not have any auspicious symbols on their currencies. South Africa rands feature their wild animals, the large cats, the zebras and the rhinos. These animals however each symbolize various protective qualities according to feng shui and are thus said to be auspicious. South Africa can be said to be very blessed in that it has wise leadership and a pretty good economy compared with other African nations. It has Nelson Mandela, the wonderfully inspiring black leader who has captured the respect of the world. Its currency is protective in symbolism. France shows its inventors and tourist spots on its currency.Austria features its leaders and buildings. Greece features Plato and its many legends which include ships and heroines. Spain features its heroes and its architectural buildings.

Finally a word on birds At last count, we discovered well over 30 countries whose currency notes feature the bird. Pictures of some of these currencies are shown here and it is useful to see that the countries that use the bird are not fairing badly at all. The bird brings good news and good opportunities and like the Phoenix, its symbolic king, they communicate good tidings and are excellent for fulfilling your wishes and bringing happiness to everyone. Birds also signify family harmony and goodwill, and open up opportunities for growth, progress and expansion. In addition to Canada and New Zealand, the list of countries that feature birds on their paper currencies include Trinidad, United Arab Emirate, Tahiti, Sweden, Seychelles, Papua New Guinea, Lithuania, Kuwait, Japan, Columbia, Bermuda, Bangladesh, Cameroons, Brazil, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Zambia, Germany, Falklands Islands, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Antilles, Mauritius, Madagascar, Denmark, Finland, Albania, Zambia, Algeria, Iceland, Lithuania and Gibraltar. Other popular and auspicious images favoured by many of the lesser known Economies include ships, airplanes and landmark buildings.

Life with Lillian
DISCOVERING PAST LIVES memories that come in bits and pieces! My interest in reincarnation started in 1997, the year when out of the blue, a high lama of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition contacted me, inviting me to go to India to meet with him, and then when we met, leaning down and whispering to me... “We live past life together!” It was a revelation that had blown me away. I did not know what to make of the silently spoken remark then, but now, many years later, the full significance of my past life connection with Rinpoche is only just beginning to unravel. My most recent meeting with Lama Zopa Rinpoche was in Katmandu in May 2010 when I joined Rinpoche for the 5 days 100,000 Tsog offerings to Guru Rinpoche at the Boudhanath Stupa. I was really blissed out just being with my precious guru.
S
ince that first meeting, I have pursued Lama Zopa Rinpoche around the world, seeking him out with an intensity that surprised me. I embraced everything he stood for and jubilantly became a serious practitioner of the Buddhist tradition that he taught and the philosophy he expounded. I believe I have come a long way since that first encounter; more importantly, I have discovered things about my past lives that reveal the meaning of my current life and all that I am now doing. Knowing my past lives have inspired me to pursue aspirations that are helping me take fullest advantage of my present existence as a human being, doing the kind of work I am doing…

The lama’s interest in contacting me had stemmed from my first book on feng shui - the book I had been inspired to write

Coming back from a decade in Hong Kong, a time when my head was brimming over with so much feng shui knowledge I had soaked up about this ancient practice. A disciple of Rinpoche’s had presented him my book, along with nine other feng shui books written by other authors. Later, Rinpoche told me it was my book that had caught his attention... and after checking his “moe” (Tibetan Spiritual Oracle) he decided to contact me as it would be “beneficial to do so”. He did so by sending me a fax which came in at precisely the moment I was passing by the phone. I saw the fax coming in. It was December 1996 and we were getting ready to leave for the airport to go for a skiing

holiday. I pulled out the fax and said to Jennifer who was next to me, “Oh look darling, Mummy’s got fan mail from a lama!” Rinpoche’s letter contained five feng shui questions and a request for my address. It was not different from many others I receive, so I scribbled a quick reply and faxed back my address. Then thought nothing more of it. That ski holiday in Vail, I broke my leg and came home on crutches. But waiting for me was a pile of MANDALA magazines and several books, which flicking through made me instantly realize what a very important and high lama this Lama Zopa Rinpoche was. “Wow,” I kept whistling as I flicked through the pages… “Oh my,” and of course I promptly sat down and wrote a longer more comprehensive reply to the lama, in the process, adding five questions of my own. I remember I asked him if he knew the Dalai Lama and asked how His Holiness could possibly be the manifestation of Kuan Yin (I had read that somewhere) when Kuan Yin was a Goddess… (I knew precious little about Buddhism then) and then I also asked if he had heard about Guru Rinpoche, the Lotus Buddha? Looking back, my questions must have revealed an inner interest in Buddhist deities which had till then lain dormant. That I thought to ask him must have been karmic because some time later, just before the lunar new year, I dreamt three dreams which I know now were prophetic dreams. The first dream was of the two white Tigers which I later realized were actually Snow Lions. Snow lions adorn the thrones of Buddhas in the elaborate thangka paintings of Tibet. I only understood this dream after I went to meet Rinpoche in Bodgaya and spied a painting of Shakyamuni Buddha on a throne painted with a pair of snow lions. The second dream had me sitting on a ledge in the high mountains in meditative prayers behind a frail old man in white robes. In the distance were snowcapped mountains and we were outside a cave and I was feeling very cold… I felt the old man was someone close, someone I loved. Later I was to find out that this was the Lawado Lama and the place was Lawado, in the Solu Khumbo region of the Himalayas, the most holy part of the mountain range, a place bordering Nepal and Tibet where the famed Guru Rinpoche is said to have resided. This Buddha, Guru Rinpoche, had appeared to me three times previously during my corporate days, each time when I was in trouble or worried... but that is another story. I mention it only to share an affinity I have with this wonderful tantric Buddha... The third dream I had was of me falling, falling as if I had slipped off a high cliff in the mountains. Then suddenly I am no longer falling. Instead I am flying, rising and someone is holding my hand pulling me up…

A day after my third dream, I think it was the third day of the lunar new year, I got a phone call from a Ven. Roger. The call was from Katmandu. Roger did not sound Asian and after introducing himself as the attendant to Lama Zopa, he invited me to go to India. I laughed shaking my head vigorously… “No, no way, no I couldn’t, I don’t think I can handle India… No no no,” I kept saying and then suddenly I heard over the phone this amazing laughter. It was an incredible sound impossible to describe, a laughter so filled with joyousness and so melodious… and it went on and on for a full minute. That was my first introduction to Rinpoche - over the phone laughing in a way I instantly recognized. It is a laughter I have heard before, somewhere from the past… and for those of you reading this who have ever heard Rinpoche laughing, you will know what I mean. The laugh of Rinpoche is incredible, it is full of blessing and it does things to you making you laugh along with him, filling you with a joyousness that is beyond comprehension… Rinpoche invited me to go to India and I found myself agreeing. There was no thought of saying No. He asked me to come immediately and told me he would meet me in Bodhgaya… Ha ha never mind that I had not the faintest idea where this place was. I could not even spell the place… but guess what? I successfully booked the last seat to Delhi, got my India visa in a day and on arrival in India was met by a tall handsome Dutch monk Rinpoche had sent to accompany me by plane to Patna; and then to motor seven hours to Gaya and then Bodhgaya en route passing dried out rivers and poor rural India, all of which left me in awe that I was actually making this journey without really wanting to, and not knowing what I was getting myself into. I felt neither fear nor anxiety, allowing some higher force to push me along.
I was looking forward to meeting the high lama because I had read how powerful Tibetan high lamas are; that they are magicians and yogics, highly skilled meditators, that they can fly through the skies, travel astrally, possess great Siddhic powers. To say my curiosity was aroused was definitely an understatement. Actually, I was excited. This then was how I came to meet Lama Zopa Rinpoche face-to-face, and on meeting, the old frail white robed figure of my dreams flashed into my mind, although Rinpoche was wearing the maroon robes of a Tibetan lama and looked nothing at all like my dream figure. But then he told me we had lived in a past life together, and that just blew my mind… perhaps we had sat together so many times in some past life and that was

why the image was so strong, and had come through to my consciousness in this life… Later I was told that Lama Zopa Rinpoche was a reincarnation of the Lawado Lama - a very holy yogic who had lived in Lawado, in a cave. When I sat with Rinpoche in his room at Root Institute, his meditation center in Bodhgaya, somehow we got to talking about “the cave in Lawado”. I started describing the cave, where it was low and where the ceiling was higher, its size and dimensions… and Rinpoche asked me, “How do you know?” and I shook my head in wonderment myself because I did not know how I knew or why we were even talking about caves! It was quite mind-blowing because I felt so comfortable and at ease with Rinpoche. Everyone around us bowed so low, and everyone was prostrating to him, so so respectful like they were in the presence of a God or something. It was the strangest scene I promise you, one where I felt really inadequate. I felt I should at least bow, or something, but I did not know how to… here was this high lama speaking English to me, the most perfect English!!! I was totally bowled over, completely smitten. Inside my heart, so much devotion slowly but surely arose. I felt it was all so right, like I was coming home. And I remember softly saying to Rinpoche then, “What took you so long to find me?” Since then I have learnt a great deal about birth and rebirth, the cycle of life we all live through; this is Samsara with six realms of existence, three of which are the lower rebirths, and three the upper rebirths. That we are all trapped in this wheel of life. To be reborn a human being in this human realm is the best rebirth of all. Definitely better than the three lower rebirths into the animal realm, the hell realms and the hungry ghosts realms; better even than the Deva God realms and the demi-God realms. The best realm to be born into is our human realm and for this to happen requires huge good karma. We are ALL incredibly lucky and we must rejoice just to be alive and never ever take our life for granted… so when in the context of cyclic existence, just being alive is such excellent feng shui! And to be living in circumstances that allow us to create yet even better karma so that our next life, our future lives are even better; that must simply feature in everything we do. Creating good feng shui for this current life is great, as it means empowering ourselves to be in a position to create more good karma. And actively creating good feng shui for our future lives is the ultimate! Knowing about reincarnation, remembering bits and pieces of our past lives, being alert to thoughts that come through to us from the past - that should create the cause for us to realize just how important it is to do everything we can to make sure we do NOT fall into any of the lower realms in our next life! With every passing encounter with Rinpoche since that first meeting in Bodhgaya would come flashes of images, a place, an event, a shared confidence, words of wisdom that would suddenly pierce through my

consciousness. Most times these thoughts would intrude into my mind without warning and they made little sense, but as the years passed, as Rinpoche taught me more Dharma, shared mantras with me, translated sutras for me and most importantly initiated me into the highest forms of tantric Buddhist practices, the remembrances and realizations came to make more and more sense to me.
It was difficult at first. Rinpoche’s altruistic teachings were initially alien to the self-cherishing attitudes we all take so much granted; but Rinpoche is a highly skilled teacher, incredibly patient and very kind, and I have to say that happily, I had the great good karma to have both the means and the time to fly to Rinpoche wherever he happened to be in the world to receive teachings from him.
It has been a magical decade that has just passed, probably the best years of my life. But even as I learnt and practiced and acquired the skills of the mind that are so needed to empower the self, there was always one question at the back of my head. Who was I in my past life with Rinpoche? Was I a man or a woman? Was I human or just an animal that Rinpoche saved? Did I really live in a cave? These were questions that were at the back of my mind

FENGSHUIWORLD
and at first I was quite desperate to know… but as the years passed, my past life identity became less important. My this life became far more important… It was on my second trek up to Lawado with Rinpoche (see FSW Sept-Oct 2008 issue) that I discovered who I was. Whenever Rinpoche goes up to Lawado, the whole mountain hears about the lama’s visit so that by the second day, thousands of mountain people, the Sherpas, are gathered at the gompa (temple) of Lawado. All come to receive blessings from Rinpoche; they come dressed in their best and there are thousands of them. I marvel at where they come from because their homes may be several mountains away. That time when I was up in Lawado I suddenly saw a mature old lady; she was a very handsome lady, and she looked well groomed, obviously someone of stature up in the mountain. I felt instantly drawn to her, like I knew her. She turned to look at me and she did not smile, but in that look we connected, as a mother to a child. I turned to Rinpoche’s brother Sangay who was next to me. “Who is that lady?” I asked, tilting my head towards the lady. Sangay said, “That, oh that’s the daughter of the old Lawado lama, you know… Rinpoche’s past life.” Instantly I took out my iPhone. I did not have my camera with me but I wanted to record that moment of recognition. It meant something to me. I willed her to look my way again and she did. I clicked - it was incredible the sudden gush or recognition. So now I know who I was in my Lawado past life? How reliable is one moment of instinctive recognition? Remembering past lives is one of the benefits of regular meditation practices. But memories of past lives usually arise only for good reason. In recent months I have been increasingly having more recollections of my other past lives - one spent in fifteenth century Tibet, another living in Tashilungpo monastery, trekking up snow covered trails and experiencing the blizzards of high mountains…. Perhaps in another issue I will share more recollections, and also how I come to be writing and popularizing feng shui in the last decades of my current life.

LAMA ZOPA RINPOCHE MY MOST PRECIOUS ROOT GURU DROPS BY FOR A VISIT
A
beautiful night with the new waxing moon barely visible in the clear dark blues skies above, my home was once again so honoured and blessed when my Root Guru, the most amazingly wondrous highest of high lamas, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche dropped by for a visit with Ven. Roger and Ven. Kunsang to be received by many of Rinpoche’s devoted disciples, and my family, complete with all of my five grandchildren... Jack, William, Dom, Ryan and Josh. Rinpoche was visiting Malaysia at the invitation of the Lapis Lazuli group to give a series of teachings on the Practice of the Compassionate Buddha (whom the Chinese know as Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy) at the Mines Resort Convention Center in Kuala Lumpur.

Many people already know about the amazing healing properties of this much sought after medicine plant but few know the full extent of its potency, or the variety of ills it can cure. Best known as a powerful antidote for burns, allergies, poisonous insect bites, blisters, broken skin, psoriasis and for healing all kinds of cuts and wounds, the juice from this succulent plant also provides pain relief for varicose veins, stings from insects, ulcers and arthritis, and for bites from jellyfish and poisonous plants. Aloe Vera is also an excellent conditioner for hair and for reducing scar tissue and skin pigmentation. In recent years, it has also been included in cosmetic creams. It is not a bad idea then to grow an aloe vera plant in your house.
NATURE’S FABULOUS HEALING GIFT
T
he Aloe Vera plant grows easily and with little effort. It thrives in the tropical climate of Malaysia and Singapore (where it is known locally as Jadam), although it adapts as easily to cooler climates. As long as it is not over watered, gets plenty of indirect light and is placed in an airy place, the plant will reward you with healthy succulent leaves that grow long and tapered, resembling a beautiful succulent cactus plant that looks as beautiful grown as a clump on the ground or in ornamental pots placed near windows. The leaves have a sharp apex and spiny edges and some come with patterned stripes. There are over two hundred species of aloe vera and what it likes most is dry, warm weather. All it asks for is soil that does not get water logged, and the occasional pat of appreciation. If you forget to water it, the plant can go for long periods without water. Aloe vera brings the best kind of good health luck when placed in the East or Southeast although it also appreciates a South orientation. Aloe vera creams and gels are now freely available as it is widely recognized as an effective remedy for all kinds of wounds and burns. It is in effect a skin healer, softener and
www.fswmag.com
moisturizer. But directly applying the pure juice harvested from its succulent leaves is what works best. What you get then is pure aloe vera, and when applied to open wounds and burns (including sun burns) the cooling relief is almost instant. Healing takes place more quickly than with most conventional creams. When I recently succumbed to an allergy rash followed by an attack of facial herpes, it was the pure aloe vera juice taken directly from an aloe vera leaf from my clump that gave me instant relief. Within hours, the horrific red rashes on my face subsided and within three days, everything cleared up.
My plants are quite old, so they are extremely potent. The strength of a plant’s healing potency increase with age. It is better to have a big plant as they grow rather slowly. When you need its juices, select the leaf that is lowest to the ground - these leaves have greater effectiveness. Use a sharp knife to cut the leaf, then trim off its thorny edges before slicing the thick succulent leaf open. What you want is the inner gel-like juice, which is sticky and gooey; it is this that should be directly applied to any afflicted area. Be generous in your application as it gets absorbed into your skin very quickly.
Aloe vera can be used for the relief of the following…
• All burns - helping to prevent scarring and infection and to give pain relief. • Sunburn - helping to soothe the skin, providing relief from pain. • Cuts and wounds - stops infection, heals and reduces scarring. • When applied to scalp and hair, enhances shine, manageability and scalp condition. • Itching rash and open sores - gives instant relief. • Psoriasis and other Eczema rashes - keeps rash under control. • Scar removal - works for minor scars or pregnancy stretch marks. • Varicose veins - applied to afflicted area brings relief. • Scrapes and abrasions - speeds up healing. • Arthritis - brings some pain relief. • Acne - applied to cleansed face, counteracts infection; heals without scarring.

Life with Lillian
Lillian Too with Puan Sri Siew Yong Gnanlingam, the old friend who introduced her to the miracle diet and made her promise not to cheat!
What price good friends? For me, it’s life’s most precious experience and I am blessed with some fabulous friendships. Definitely good feng shui and even better karma. The friends in my life have the same concerns as I have, one of which has been my battle against the bulge! For at least ten years now I have investigated, tried and tested almost every known diet that’s come out... many work for a few weeks and then the weight piles on again, usually with a vengeance. So when my friend Siew Yong told me about Dr Cohen’s weight loss program, and how it had worked so well for her, I was initially skeptical…
MY SHRINKING
with Compliments from an Old Friend!
U
ntil I noticed how she got slimmer and slimmer. I hadn’t seen her look so good in a while. She had never been overweight but now she looked at least two decades younger… it really got me interested in her “miracle” weight loss program, something she had been trying to get me to try for some time. I dismissed it as another fad diet and even made fun of it as she pointed me to her overweight son who had successfully gone on the program and now looked slim and handsome after shedding some fifteen kilos or so… I said it was his youth that made it so easy to drop the pounds, but had to admit he did look better! But it was her slimmer body shape that got to me. She really was looking better and better as the days passed. Her improved figure reminded me of when we were at University together and that was over thirty years ago… yes, we have been pals for as long as that. I have to admit that over the years, she had kept her figure better than me. But she insisted that for this reason alone, my weight loss under the system she was recommending would be even more spectacular. “You will be shocked at how fast you will lose all that surplus weight,” she insisted. “The weight from the tummy goes first…” And of course that was my problem! Like most women, since middle age, I had found it increasingly
44
F E N G SHUIWORLD | July/Aug 2010
difficult to stop my tummy from getting bigger and fatter. Somehow, despite exercise and careful eating habits, I seemed to have lost the ability to stay slim. Weight somehow seems to pile on more easily than ever. And despite exercising, walking my dogs daily, even climbing the Himalayas, I simply could not regain my once former well-toned body. And then of course there’s the health angle. Being fat equates to being more vulnerable to so many kinds of health problems! Diabetes for one, high cholesterol and high blood pressure! Somehow being overweight makes us more susceptible to these ageing problems. And I just read somewhere that obesity is fast becoming the biggest health risk ever! In Japan, there is now even a law which forbids companies from employing people whose waist exceeds 33 inches! There, companies get fined for every overweight employee, and for some companies, this fine goes into the millions of dollars! Siew Yong confided that she also felt loads better and lighter, that she now had more energy and was feeling healthier. I told her I was diabetic and she did worry that because of this, I might not be able to do the program. “You need to start by taking a blood test,” she said, because the program was monitored by a panel of doctors. Blood
www.fswmag.com
tests were mandatory so Dr Cohen (the doctor who designed the program) and his team can monitor progress. The active involvement of qualified medical practitioners overseeing my progress was what eventually gave me the confidence to try the program; and as I write this, I have been on it now for just over four weeks. I have lost 8 kilos, but more amazingly, I have lost over nine inches from my waist! What’s great is that I have gone down two dress sizes! And as I watch my tummy shrinking, shrinking… and sending all my clothes to be altered… I am overwhelmed by a lightness of feeling as I feel a wave of great affection for my dear friend who not only introduced me to the program - but also gave it to me as a gift. She had attached only one condition, “You must NOT cheat, you must follow the program faithfully,” she had told me gravely, “if you do cheat, you must pay me back!” The best thing of all is just how easy the whole “diet’ turned out to be. It was so easy not to cheat and in fact, I now believe this is the best way to eat. I had thought it would be tough but have discovered how easy it is to follow the eating program Dr Cohen had designed for me. It had been based on my blood test of course, and the idea is to use food intake to “train” my body to more efficiently digest all kinds of foods eaten. The body is also taught not to store food or water so that weight loss is kept off permanently after the program. And that is the best benefit of all, that irrespective of what you eat after the program, you will NOT put on weight again. Now that I have been on the program and have seen the effects of the diet, I know that I have forever changed my eating habits. Now I do not need carbohydrates such as rice, pasta and noodles which I gave up eating during the diet. I am told that during the re-feeding phase of the program, I will have to eat lots of rice and noodles because the body has to be “trained” to digest these foods as well, and not store them in the body. The secret of the program then is to systematically train the body to digest proteins, vegetables and carbohydrates.

hahrukh Khan was born on 2nd November 1965 in Delhi. He is a Leo ascendant rising in the Eastern horizon. At his birth, the planetary configuration indicates Uranus & Pluto in Leo; Sun & Neptune in Libra; Mars, Mercury & Ketu in Scorpio; Venus in Sagittarius; Moon in Capricorn; Saturn in Aquarius; Rahu in Taurus and Jupiter in Gemini. Ever wonder why Shahrukh Khan puts so much energy, stature and control into every role he plays? It’s because his Ascendant Lord, the Sun in his natal chart is placed in the 3rd house and is debilitated. But a debilitated Ascendant Lord becomes auspicious when placed in the 3rd house. This house deals with power and the Sun symbolizes power as well as rising energy brimming with confidence; positioned in the third house, the sun takes him to dizzy heights of spectacular and unusual success. Another important star Mars is placed in the 4th house in combination with Mercury and Ketu. Here, Mars is powerful because it is the swagrahi (significator) of the same house). A strong Mars brings happiness in married life. It also brings power, comfort and the possession of properties. Mercury positioned with Mars adds intelligence and business skills. This indicates someone who knows how to sell himself. Not to forget that Ketu is also placed in his 4th house, acting as a catalyst in all these matters. Venus, the lovely and bright planet, is beautifully placed in the 5th house, which represents creativity and imagination. Best of all, Venus is generally symbolic of the
www.fswmag.com
Celluloid world. Jupiter is the Planet which when strong can bring a person overall success in both personal and professional life, as well aid one in winning over enemies. In Shahrukh Khan’s natal chart, we see a Venus aspect of Jupiter placed in the 11th house. This brings him victory over the competition. His co-stars have always considered him as unmatched, as someone who holds the premier position. Only Moon’s position in his 6th house is not auspicious. Moon represents the Mother and its position here is indicating a distance from his mother. She did not live long enough to see him succeed and become the superstar that he is in the Indian Film Industry. Meanwhile Rahu in the 10th House supplements his great success luck strengthening developments in his career.
Significance of his Luck Periods (or Darsha)
Shahrukh Khan’s Jupiter period which lasted 16 years from May 1992 to May 2008 brought him all he could dream of. His career took flight during this Jupiter (Mahadasha) period. For success luck, the Jupiter period is what one should look out for, but we must take note that not everyone goes through a Jupiter period during one’s lifetime. Or when one’s Jupiter period occurs around childhood, it is of less significance. Shahrukh Khan’s Jupiter period occurred at the prime of his life when he reaped its fullest benefits. It also lasted for a very long time! Looking at the current planet periods to take a peep into the future, we note that his Saturn period has begun; it started from 2008. His Saturn is well placed, which means it brings plenty of directional strength. He is likely then to venture into new projects involving outside people. Shahrukh Khan entered the IPL cricket and other sportsrelated activities where teams are involved and his directional sense will likely give these new ventures of his an uplifting effect. Positively placed Saturn also brings monetary gains. The only area that may trouble Shahrukh Khan during this Saturn period is his health, which he must take care of. Meanwhile Jupiter entered Pisces on 2nd May 2010 which is very favourable for the revamping of the global economy and also extremely favourable for Shahrukh. So his new movie is likely to become a hit bringing him lots of financial gains. Mars, which is the lord of Shahrukh Khan’s 11th House (the House of Fortune), has also changed its position from Cancer to a favourable Leo on 26th May 2010. Mars, his ascendant lord, will be extremely lucky for Shahrukh and will give him a great deal more personal happiness as well as financial and professional success. His future, this year at least, is looking bright. NOTE: VEDIC ASTROLOGY is the Indian astrological method of analyzing destiny using one’s birth details to compose a chart comprising twelve houses, with each house signifying an aspect of one’s luck. The Natal chart is a snapshot of where the planets in the skies were positioned in the chart and this reveals destiny as well as luck periods. Vedic astrology, as a method for determining one’s life destiny bears striking similarities to the western Astrological sciences.

A VERY MOTHER’S DAY A Hollywood Mum comes knocking on Amelia Neo’s feng shui world
I
n the course of my feng shui work, I get to meet some truly lovely people. Last month I was invited to a private luncheon with two “VVIP customers” on vacation in Singapore. The invitation came from a prestigious events management company that had a couple of important Hollywood ladies who wanted to meet with someone who could give them some professional pointers about the practice of Feng Shui. I was delighted to oblige and the guests turned out to be the mother of the one and only Will Smith, definitely Hollywood royalty! She was in Singapore with members of her family and a close family friend. No, Will Smith was not with them, but he sure has a very charming Mother… The lunch was held at the exclusive China Club Singapore (affiliated to The China Clubs of Hong Kong & Beijing). This fabulous restaurant offers delicious traditional Chinese gourmet food amidst exquisite Oriental settings. The service was both personalized and excellent. The restaurant is perched on the highest floor of Capital Tower Singapore’s premium commercial building in the Central Business District. It is the fourth tallest skyscraper in Singapore and is famous for its many Feng Shui features.
48
F E N G SHUIWORLD | July/Aug 2010
To start with, its address is the auspicious number 168 Robinson Road. The exterior entrance of the building boasts Yang water features made auspicious with ornaments that symbolize the 5 elements. In the man-made pond are an abundance of beautiful koi fish that are well kept and healthy - so vital if they are to bring good feng shui! As one enters into the building, one is literally overwhelmed by the interior bright hall, which is big and wide. Again very auspicious. The structures do not have sharp edges (as sharp edges are like secret poison arrows that bring obstacles and misfortunes). All the furnishings (including lighting and lamps) have rounded edges and even their directory board is in the shape of a huge semicircle. The ambience is simple but magnificent with the nice aroma of
coffee from Starbucks on the ground floor. There are several “branded” shops that carry designer labels and a premium fitness center. The anchor tenant is no other than our very own Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) so the building possesses an aura of luxury that is sure to attract luck to its residents. The lunch was scheduled at 12.00pm and we were introduced with warm handshakes and hugs. Although that was the first time we met, I could feel the warmth and friendliness of Mrs. Smith. She is in her seventies and she looks hot for her age!!! Her figure hugging clothes and superbly crew cut short hair gives her a really sassy look - one does not need to look far to see where her famous son gets his charm from, and of course, Will Smith is box office gold in America, being the lead star
www.fswmag.com
in such blockbusters as I am Legend and I, Robot! Both the ladies also turned out to be marvelous, friendly and down-to-earth people. I was really lucky to have the opportunity to lunch with these wonderful bubbly ladies. We were seated near the window so we had a bre athtaking view. We could almost capture the entire view of Singapore city. I pointed out the popular landmarks, skyscrapers, historical buildings, Singapore River, etc, and described the Feng Shui features and connotations of each one in turn. I also enlightened her about the Oriental decor in the restaurant and the auspicious meanings of the beautiful Chinese symbols on display. We had a very lively interactive discussion about modern Feng Shui, its applications and benefits. They were thrilled when I explained about the elements & energies surrounding us, how each element can be used as remedies for certain afflictions and enhancers for good energies, and how each element can react differently to each individual person based on the person’s gender, date & time of birth.
They were also fascinated with my jewellery and was especially taken with the jade bangle I wore that day. I explained that I wore jewelry pieces whose element properties were in sync with my personal elements. When they learned about our feng shui boutique that sells auspicious gifts, they immediately asked to be taken there after lunch. We had such hilarious moments when the food was served – they were curious about each gourmet dish served, and enjoyed learning to use the super slim pair of white jade chopsticks. When the Superior Double Boiled Birds Nest Soup arrived however, they balked… reluctant to believe that we actually ate the nests of birds, but I explained about the nourishment and benefits of this unique delicacy that is also good for the skin... and then they did not hesitate finishing the dish which they pronounced to be delicious. They were quick to confess that at their age, “We will take anything that will make us look good and young!” It was a fun-filled lunch, full of laughter, great conversation, warmth
and love. I feel like I have known them a long time. They were really interested in feng shui and we got so carried away discussing the subject that time just flew. It was way past 3pm in the afternoon by the time we arrived at our feng shui boutique in Vivo City. Both ladies purchased plenty of gifts for their family members. Mrs. Smith was particularly keen on the broad jade ring and was sorely disappointed when we did not have one that fitted her finger. I promised to look for a similar good quality broad jade ring to courier to her. They were thrilled to read our Feng Shui World Magazine and were especially excited with Lillian & Jennifer Too’s 2010 Horoscope Books. They got one for each of their family members back home. It was a truly memorable Mother’s Day, well spent with two positive heartwarming ladies. I will miss them and hope to see them again soon. Maybe next time we will also meet her grandson Jaden Smith (Will Smith’s son), who is also the new Karate Kid… when they come to Asia to promote the movie!
Jaden Smith the Karate Kid
E
arth Tiger Jaden Smith (son of movie legends Will and Jada-Pinkett Smith) is set to make it big! Barely 12 years old, this little man has already starred in two major films, two TV shows and now, he’s survived one year of gruelling kungfu training to star in Karate Kid, so far the best “remake movie” this year has produced. Bombarded this year with a bunch of 80’s remakes, we may finally have found one worth watching! Having already been unimpressed with this year’s Clash of the Titans, 80’s movie watchers are now presented with a reboot of Karate Kid. Teenagers all over the world who remember how awesome it was to discover that even a tiny-framed weakling like Daniel (Ralph Macchio) could kick-ass with only one leg didn’t hold their breath for anything great. Even before it screened, critics were already slamming the fact that the new movie bears little resemblance to its original; for one, it is set in China, not Japan. And instead of a Miyagi, the movie features a kungfu master in Jackie Chan, already famous for being a kungfu legend in real life. But the critics are wrong. In fact, the first weekend of Karate Kid has exceeded everyone’s expectations by topping the box office charts with $56 million, knocking off Shrek 4. “The A-Team”, which boasts an all star cast of Liam Neeson, Jessica Biel and Bradley Cooper got many Generation X-ers excited, but only managed to collect $26 million on its first weekend. So even though the Tiger year could go either way for Tigers, for Jaden, this is certainly a year on the up. Jaden is now attached to a new movie project named “Amulet” due to be release in 2012.

Purify energy in your living space by
Using the Singing Bowl
S
pace purification clears away negative vibrations, allowing fresh new chi to enter your home. A cleared space puts us in touch with the soul and energy of the universe so that we live in harmony with each other and our environment. Space purification is done using incense, followed by singing bowl purification. As your living space is cleansed with regular use of the singing bowl, its metalic sound will get purer, and sharper each day to reflect cleaner energy around you.
Characteristics of a good singing bowl -
Should ideally have a shining golden colour, be fairly thick, and perfectly round.
-
can be polished or matte; in any metallic shade.
-
When singing bowls are rubbed, hit, or tapped they produce a wonderful, pure and lasting sound. This is true even if you tap it with your fingernails.
-
The quality of sound is determined by the thickness of the bowl’s rim.
-
its humming resonance and singing vibrations depend on its depth.
-
it is made from 7 types of metals.
Seven Types of Metal To produce the special singing sound, the bowls should have a round crucible shape and be made from seven different metals: silver, gold, tin, copper, zinc, iron and lead. Adding real gold into the bowls improves the sound; and it symbolizes the auspiciousness of gold. The seven types of metals are a tradition. Gold represents the sun, the ultimate source of yang energy. Silver represents the moon, the ultimate source of yin energy. Hence, using silver and gold represents the union of yin and yang inside the bowl itself. The other metals each represent the planets in the universe. Each of the seven metals produces its own individual sound and together they produce an exceptional singing sound that pierces through the energy of space.

Striking the Bowl with a Mallet
Using the Bowl in Space Purification
L
et the singing bowl sit comfortably on a special cushion in your upturned left palm. Spend a few seconds tuning into the heaviness of the bowl. Then lift the wooden mallet and gently strike the rim of the bowl. each person will hear a different kind of humming or singing sound. Strike the bowl continuously to get familiar with the sounds that permeate the room. close your eyes slightly and allow yourself to be enveloped by the sound waves created. Hold the bowl in your left palm and walk slowly from room to room in your home. in each room strike the bowl three times, and move in a clockwise direction around the room. Listen to the sounds generated from the bowl. Sounds produced in “dead” corners are often flat and dull while those that come from a lively part of the home tend to be sharp and clear. Learn to tell the differences. This first round through the home allows the bowl to resonate everywhere. it will balance the energies in your home almost instantly. if you have a room you consider being especially unlucky, place the bowl on a table with a cushion underneath. Let the bowl steady itself and then strike the rim of the bowl with the wooden mallet.
52
F E N G SHUIWORLD | JuLy/AuG 2010
Striking the bowl three times creates the first set of sounds. Let the sound ring out loud and follow its resonance. As the sound begins to fade, strike again, and keep doing this as you move around the room.
“Humming” the Bowl with the Mallet You can also slide the mallet around the rim of the bowl in a clockwise direction to generate a ringing sound. Keep a firm tension on the mallet and listen as a gentle humming sound grows in intensity. If at first you cannot get the bowl to “hum” using this method, try striking the bowl first to “wake it up” before sliding the mallet along the rim. The trick is in the continuos pressure of the mallet against the rim. Gently press the rim evenly and firmly. When you get good at it, the sheer beauty of the sound will carry you away. This method brings out the harmonics of the bowl. When your bowl is singing nicely, begin to walk slowly around the room. Try to stay close to the walls so that any unbalanced energy that may be stuck to the walls gets cleansed and purified by the sound. Circle doors and window areas three times in clockwise direction.
Incense Purification You may also perform incense purification before singing your bowl. Incense fills the home with pure, balanced yang energy especially if the incense is made from special mountain plants and herbs. Incense appeases local spirits and when followed by singing bowl purification, generates immense harmony.
Focus Your Mind The singing bowl purification also acts as a therapeutic method to open up the chakras of the human body. As you are cleansing your living space with the singing bowl, focus your mind towards clearing negative energies in your body and mind as well as around you.
Benefits of Singing Bowl Purification -
Clears away negative energies of a living space that originate from feng shui afflictions, quarrels and events.
-
Transforms inauspicious energy into auspicious energy.
-
Activates elemental energies of metal sectors of the home (northwest for Patriarch and West for children).
-
Opens up the chakras of the human body and cleanses your mind, giving you a sense of uplift and relaxation after bathing in the harmonic tones of a singing bowl.
-
enhances the effectiveness of feng shui cures.
-
Leaves positive vibrations that make homes hum with www.fswmag.com happiness.

GEMMA ARTERTON
A Real Life Goddess? The year of the Tiger is turning out to be a red carpet year for British siren Gemma Arterton. This vivacious and curvaceous screen goddess, born in the cusp of the Ox and Tiger year has shot to world fame in two major fantasy productions this year, first as the wise and beautiful demi-goddess Io in Clash of the Titans, and then recently as the courageous and sexy Princess Tamina in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Mike Newall, director of Prince of Persia says he turned down hundreds of actresses from across the globe before settling on Gemma, not only because she looked the part, but also because she is a fabulous actress.
G
emma first marked her place in the world of international cinema when she was cast alongside Daniel Craig as Agent Strawberry Fields in the Bond flick Quantum of Solace after beating over 1500 actresses for the part. Even before she graduated from the elite Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), she was already burgeoning signs of greatness in London’s circle of performing arts, having performed as Rosaline in the Globe Theatre’s production of As You Like It and later in Stephen Poliakoff’s BBC Drama Capturing Mary. Gemma’s background was not posh like many of her classmates. Both her parents were working class, her mother a cleaner and her father a welder. You might even say that she started life at a disadvantage, considering she was born with six fingers on both hands and a crumpled ear; and of course she would never have been considered a beauty by conventional standards. But perhaps this is Gemma’s unique edge to success. Could it be that she is descended from some Goddess realm, since her success, swift and blazing, seems incredibly fortuitous? She displays all the signs of the in-

between features that make her an unlikely standout in the astrological stakes. Neither an Ox nor a Tiger! Six fingers! Little do people know that polydactyls (those born with more than 10 fingers or toes) are so rare they are believed to be a gift of the Gods, sent to earth for some divine reason. These are signs of someone whose immediate past life was lived in the deva realm which is not unlike a Goddess/God realm. A disfigured ear also indicates a deeply spiritual existence in a previous life. It is little wonder then that now, at only 24 years old, this actress of modest origins has suddenly burst upon the international scene becoming instantly famous with seemingly little effort. First as a James Bond heroine, then a demi-goddess, and more recently as a Princess of a sacred ancient city. RISE & RISE AGAIN Incredibly incidental, but also so very auspicious, is how her characters in both her recent films die in the most courageous quests to help save the world, and then, miraculously, get resurrected to life. This happens in Clash of the Titans when she is killed
Arterton as Princess Tamina in Prince of Persia.
by an assassin sent by Hades, the God of Hell and is later brought back to life by Zeus. While in Prince of Persia she sacrifices her own life to save the world but is brought back to life by the actions of the heroic Prince Dastan. Could this be a prophecy of things to come for Gemma and her charmed destiny? No matter how hard she falls, she rises again, indestructible like the Phoenix…? After all, they say life imitates art. For Gemma, there is little doubt that this is only the beginning of a long and enduring career. Gemma herself admits in interviews that she has always dreamed of being a princess. This year her dream has become a reality; first in Prince of Persia, and now, in real life. She recently married her fiancé Stefano Catelli whom she describes as “the love of my life” in a fairytale castle in romantic Andalucia in Spain. We predict Gemma is certain to become a huge star. Watch for her next picture!

LIZ & RICHARD A LOVE too powerful to sustain?
S
he was the most beautiful woman in the world and he the ultimate male, macho, passionate, the sort of man women secretly fantasize over. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, both at the peak of their acting careers, feted stars of an age when movie stars were like demi gods, had met on the set of Cleopatra which was then the most expensive over-budget movie ever made; and in the heat of the desert sun, the two fell madly, passionately in love. Their liaison made headlines and the world followed their affair with bated breath. On the movie set, their love scenes - she playing the Egyptian Queen, he playing the powerful Roman general Marc Anthony - steamed up the cameras. Neither the Director nor their supporting players could tear them apart. Throwing caution to the winds, they consummated their love with a passion that mesmerized the world. Liz (Water Monkey) and Richard Burton (Wood Ox) were at that time married to others, he to Englishwoman Sybil, she to Eddie Fisher, the husband of her once best friend, Debbie Reynolds, at that time America’s sweetheart. She had married, or many say stolen Eddie after the untimely death of her husband Mike Todd. It was all very scandalous at that time and for those of us who followed the love life of Elizabeth Taylor, we see big similarities in the way the current celebrated

beauty Angelina Jolie “stole” Brad Pitt from current American sweetheart Jennifer Aniston. It seems nice girls finish last in any love triangle. Just like Liz and Richard Burton in the sixties, the Brangelina coupling in the current decade is as volatile and as turbulent, fraught with big fights and even bigger making up, all played out in the glare of the paparazzi’s flashing cameras. In the Sixties, Elizabeth Taylor’s affair with Richard Burton shocked America and fascinated the world. Like that of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, their affair was fodder for the world’s media. They married, fought, divorced, then married again... and divorced again. In between, they lived like a God and Goddess, rich, glamorous and larger than life. Opulence defined their life and eventually they became the stuff of legends. He decked her out in big diamonds, the best the European Houses had to offer, including the 33 carat Krupp diamond and the 69 carat Cartier rock. He bought her priceless works of Impressionist art… Monet, Picasso, van Gogh, Pissarro, Renoir, Degas, and Rembrandt, making Taylor probably the richest surviving icon of old Hollywood today… Sadly then, as the Chinese have always warned, when you live your life with such intensity, when there is so much mass adoration, success, wealth and decadence, the Gods get jealous. A reckoning comes. Love turns to hate. Passion generates jealousy. Desire fuels pain and happiness transforms into heartbreak. A book has finally come out revealing all… Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and the Marriage of the Century made up primarily of letters they wrote each other over two decades reveal the anguish and the pain of their tortured love. Long after they divorced a second time and married other partners, Richard Burton, and perhaps Liz Taylor as well, desperately yearn for a reconciliation, praying for a reunion. he idea for the Kapan Homestay Tourist program, located in one of the safest and cleanest parts of the Katmandu valley and with close proximity to many holy Buddhist places and monasteries, was the brainchild of the Nepal Tourist Board and a Kopan monastery monk, Ven. Nyima Tashi, whose desire to assist residents of his local village prompted him to pursue the idea with the government. Since the program launch last year, 200 beds with 52 participating households in the village of Kapan have started operations. The idea of “Homestay is not new, as this is a concept that has been successfully tried in many developing countries; but in Katmandu, it is the efficient and integrated way the whole concept is being executed which is so impressive. Households wanting to participate in the Program by setting aside two or three rooms in their homes for rent to tourists can now become members of a Cooperative which provides home improvement loans for them to enhance their homes, make it clean and very smart looking, as well as invest in the setup costs of putting rooms out for rent. The home improvement loans make it possible for clean rooms, bathrooms, comfortable beds, linens etc and in some cases even Internet access is made available - and all for the incredible sum of US$15 to US$20 per night.
www.fswmag.com
Ven. Nyima Tashi learnt feng shui from me several years back and has been using his knowledge to assist local villagers in the Kapan area to enhance their homes. He has also instituted valuable training programs for participating households. They are taught to cook tasty meals for their visitors and are given basic training in managing their humble homestay businesses. Ven. Nyima manages the incredibly comfortable and inexpensive Shambhala Village Resort located along the main road of the area, and is thus sharing his know-how and experience. Shambhala offer two bedroom executive apartments with private baths and free Internet Access, gym, yoga and tai chi meditation facilities for US$50 a night. The Home Stay/Home Improvement program has been so successful that another 200 beds in an adjoining village is being launched next year in preparation for Nepal Tourism Year 2011. The great attraction for the international visitor mountain climbers and trekkers, pilgrims and visitors to the surrounding monasteries - is that clean beds with attached bathrooms are now available to the budgetconscious traveler. All households provide breakfast and home-cooked meals to visitors and with their homes located around Kapan village, the homes are all within walking distance of the great Stupa of Boudhanath. The area also houses Buddhist monasteries of famous and well-known Tibetan high lamas. Kopan nunnery and monastery for instance is just a 15-minute walk up the hill. Pilgrims visit Katmandu all the time during the December/January period and staying at these beautiful private homes enable visitors to get to know what life is like living in the Katmandu valley. the Katmandu valley
The Katmandu valley is one of the world’s richest cultural areas. Here is located SWAYAMBHUNATH the holiest Stupa on earth, where tales of miraculous cures and powerful legends abound. Then there is the Great Stupa of Boudhanath which is not only the largest in the world but is also regarded as the source of Tibetan Buddhism. It is believed that when you see the EYES of this stupa for the first time and you make a heartfelt wish, you will get your wish fulfilled. The heart of Katmandu city Basantapur houses many old monuments including the living child Goddess, Kumari Devi, and there are old civilizations and a perfectly restored complex of temples and palaces at nearby Patan and Bhaktapur. For shopping, nothing beats the streets of Thamel where you can shop for some of the best thangka art in the world, as well as Buddhist iconography and statues. And for the passionate mountaineer, those who want to climb Mount Everest or just make it to Base Camp, or even just to trek up the holy mountains of the Himalayas or circle the holy mountain of Mount Kailash (said to be the abode of Hindu Gods and Buddhist deities) truly there is no better place to start your journey than in Katmandu. Watch the sunrise and sunset from anywhere up the hills around the valley and you might catch a glimpse of heaven.

Looking back and forth with a Feng Shui perspective Chronology: The Bright Side of the Coin
S
ince 1975 when the war started in Lebanon, we became bohemians, changing countries every 2 years on average, until 1986, when my father decided that war was over (apparently), that he had bought a house in Lebanon, and that we had to move countries all over AGAIN. What was exciting about this new house was that we “owned” it, and it was not rented like all the previous ones. It was ours. It had to be perfect. The plan was that we would come for the summer, stay at a beach resort in my aunt’s chalet, while my mum got everything ready. I remember how much energy and detail went into that process. Moving would take about 3 months, it was the beginning of summer, and moving was planned for September, just in time for my brother to start school and for me to start university. By the way, we are a family of 4: mum, dad, my beloved brother Elias, and me, the eldest daughter. Quite a balanced family, to be honest. The new house was a beautiful duplex (2-storeys high) luxury apartment, all white and so full of light. The huge window view was about 6 meters high. The view was amazing, facing the sea at a distance. Every little detail was thought of. We even had a little kitchenette on the second floor, so we didn’t have to go far away to the kitchen when thirsty or hungry. And Elias and I each had our own rooms. A dream come true. My mum had asked the carpenter to design 2,00 meter beds for each one, with a drawer underneath, another bed with a mattress for friends sleeping over. The kitchen was a revolution. Designed and manufactured by a premium German brand. It had a MICROWAVE!!! We had never seen one! Amazing. It was very innovative in design and technology then. The house was on the 9th-10th floor, the last apartment in the building, and the best thing was the pool on top; yes, a pool! Of course then it was a benediction, not a curse. We couldn’t wait to move. It’s good that summer kept us busy at the beach. My mum is a very faithful person, a fervent Christian, also very superstitious. It was out of the question to move

before a priest had come to bless the house and clear it from “the eye” of others. Of course she also had a list before the D day. What happened then was not supposed to happen. But life had decided otherwise. That summer, my mum had to travel to meet my father some place on the globe I can’t remember where. So she gave me a key of the new house, just in case. I was the oldest, therefore the responsible one of course. She never knew what happened next. Not until today. I was 18 and my brother 15. The devil paid us a visit that night. We were looking for action, and we were free. We were not supposed to move or sleep in the new house of course. But we did; that night. I remember removing the plastic wrap off our mattresses! We were so excited. The next day, we were having breakfast in the brand new kitchen, so we had a bright idea: try the microwave oven. There was no instruction leaflet or catalogue. So we started by trying to heat some water. And it worked! It was the summer of 86 and we were boiling water in a new heating device! Fascinating! Then it was melting butter. Remarkable! It took me 4 hours to clean up after the bright idea that came next: boil an egg. We took a glass. Filled it with water. Put an egg. Place the glass in the microwave. On. Then press the time. Select the power, and start. Then few seconds, then a big BOOM. An explosion. Then the fear of mum’s reaction. I had to clean up! An exploded burst egg all over the microwave… it looked very bad, and also smelled bad. That was our first interaction with the new house. Many followed after that.

The other side of the coin: the curse.
As I was telling you, my mum is a big believer when it comes to religion and also the “eye” concept. I am not sure if you are familiar with the eye concept. Basically, it represents the jealous eye/look of others, a look that can hurt and jinx you. It is very present in the Arab world. I think it is also written in the Quran “Al Ain” in Arabic. They say that it can hurt very bad. Some people emanate very bad vibes. I’m sure you’ve met people like that… Om Ah Hum, Om Ah Hum, Om Ah Hum… That’s why she needed someone to bless the house before moving in. It was for protection against all kinds of bad energies in a way. And we moved in before letting mum do this. I regret that very much, as the next 20 years were very bad. Now that I know about Feng Shui, I understand why it was terrible. We paid for it. First, the location. Although it was facing the sea and backed by a mountain, the surrounding environment was not so appealing. There were 3 reasons why it was terrible. There were 3 hospitals in the vicinity. Also 3 churches. And the icing on the cake was “Deir Al Salib”, a huge imposing asylum on the top of the mountain on the back side, right outside my room’s window. I always laugh when I say that it had a very severe impact on my psychological state of mind, because people do say I’m crazy! Now a small tour of the new house: • A big entrance with a huge mirror right in front of the main door, and also a mirror on the ceiling. My poor father never won a contract in that house. Every time he bid for something, it always failed before the end. • The house had 7 toilets, all active… • Mirrors covering all the closets were there from wall-to-wall in all the bedrooms… I remember waking up crying sometimes without knowing why… now I know! • The swimming pool was right on top of a pipe room, with all the water tanks, right on top of my parent’s room and the salons. • There was a toilet right behind my bed, in the SW. • A toilet on top of the dining room, but those are the small details.
• Humidity issues with a huge wooden wall in the SW salon. Of course we did not know that Wood kills Earth! • Hu m i d i t y i s s u e s w i t h a l l t h e w o o d i n t h e kitchen. • Basically humidity issues everywhere! • And many more miseries we lived then… the list is very, very long. Of course then we did not know Feng Shui. Mum blamed it on the evil eye, and we were young then, so for Elias and me, we rarely noticed. We were busy enjoying life.
Bracket
In 1996, 10 years later, I was 28 and facing rock-bottom. Worn out, depressed, miserable, unhappy, and all that it involved: backache, ulcers, and lots of other uncomfortable symptoms. I always had something wrong! Mum blamed it on the evil eye. Dad was surprised to see things getting worse and worse every time he saw me. I wanted to just disappear… Anyway, we had our family ritual: the 4 of us would sit together and discuss the issue of the time, and find an issue. We are like the Musketeers, “one for all, all for one”. That’s our motto in life. That day, while discussing our options, Elias suggested that I leave the country and have a new lifestyle somewhere else. He suggested Dubai. At that time, Dubai was not as famous like today. I had never heard of it myself! Elias had been there, and thought that I could easily get a job there as the advertising industry was booming there. I was lucky that my company had a branch there too. I first went for 2 weeks to check out my options. Two months later I was there, looking at a new life. I was really lucky in every step I took. I even won a car! They had a promotion when I bought it, and 6 months later I won all the money back! About $14,000 American Dollars!
Of course then, we didn’t know why. The truth is that the beginning was great. We had a great time in that house, but there was always a problem somewhere: • Leaking ceilings everywhere. • Heater problems. • Plumber problems. • Humidity issues, paint peeling off the walls. • Humidity issues involving electrical problems.

Architecturally Speaking By Chris Yeo
Identify the Problem to Find the Solution
W
hen we move into a new home, one of the questions we ponder about is the selection of which bedroom to give to each family member. While selecting may sound easy, it can also be one of the more important decisions made, as it directly affects the luck of each family member. So how do we begin in the selection process? First, we need to study the general floor plan to identify which bedrooms belong to East group and which to West group. Once we have segregated the rooms into East and West, we then match each family member’s Kua number to their room groups. East group individuals should sleep in rooms located in the East group sectors (East, Southeast, South or North) and West group individuals should sleep in rooms located in West group sectors (Southwest, Northwest, Northeast and West). While it is NorthWest North NorthEast ideal to select a room that is in the same E a s t o r We s t West East group as your Kua, we usually find ourselves in the situation where we have SouthWest South SouthEast to settle with a room that is not in the same group category as our Kua number. When this is the case, we have to look at a few factors to decide which room is most suitable. For example, if you are a West group person and having to choose rooms located in the East sectors, first look for the room that is firstly NOT in your total loss sector, then try to find a room that is the least inauspicious for you based on your inauspicious directions. Next, study the shape and orientation of the room to see whether the room is suitable for you to tap your auspicious directions. With most bedrooms, we only have 1 or 2 walls to choose from due to the location of the wardrobes, windows and doors. In most cases, the bed location is predetermined through the location of the power points and the bed location in relation to the windows and doors. So we have to make sure that the bed direction is one that is suitable for you.
The next step is to be aware of your surroundings and to identify whether there are any elements that pose a threat to your sleeping position, such as wall edges, direct line of sight of the doors, and whether your bed is positioned such that it forces you to sleep with a toilet behind you. In some cases, we have to strike a fine balance of the good and the bad, and settle for a bed position that takes into account all the negatives to find a positive solution.
Design Solution 1
In the example here, we are faced with a situation whereby the room is located in the South corner of the home, thereby ideal for all East group persons. However, the only wall that is ideal for the residents is the West wall which coincidently is the person’s total loss direction. In such a case, we have to look for alternative directions to locate the bed. When we consider the constraints of the bedroom space, the North and South walls do not seem ideal, as the North wall results in the bed being cramped into a corner, causing a major shift in the overall room orientation. This can result in a claustrophobic effect. By having the bed along the South wall, it causes the bed to not only be cramped to a corner, but also positioned such that it sits in between wall and window, which would create more problems than it would solve. Therefore, through elimination of directions, the most ‘ideal’ direction in this case would be the East wall, which would allow the bed to center itself to the main orientation of the room. The downside is that the door to the room would directly face the bed, so a partition screen would be needed to divert the direct line of sight, which then allows the bed to sit North

Use backdrop to create a partition with the wall and help centralize the bed in relation to the room
Tip 1: Always try to select a room which allows
a bed position where you are able to tap one of your auspicious directions.

within the room properly and also to create a small entry foyer to divert the flow of movement. The other aspect is that the bed headboard would be sharing the same wall as the toilet. To avoid this, a physical partition backdrop is introduced to create a physical barrier with the toilet wall, but also to create a backdrop that reinforces the bed position to the overall room shape and orientation.
Create partitions to regularize odd shaped rooms into 2 regular shapes, to centralize the arrangement of furniture within the room
North South
Use screens to disperse any sharp corners
West
Design Solution 2
In a second situation, we are faced with an oddshaped room situated in the West corner of the house. With the resident being a West group person, it also means there is only one direction for us to position the bed. So to find the solution, we first must identify the issues of the room. In the main section of the room, the doors are placed such that they would be in direct line of sight of the bed and cramped in a corner. Also due to the odd shape of the room, it creates a sharp edge that directly faces the entrance door, thus creating an invisible poison arrow to anyone that enters the room. To resolve this situation, a partition screen is needed, to serve a dual purpose. First, it allows the corner edge to disappear, and second, it allows the room to be divided into two regular shaped rooms. This allows the main area to act as the bedroom living, where all the entertainment and reading would be done, and the smaller area can then serve as the main sleeping quarters. This creates a more intimate scenario where we allow the bed to be positioned to face the West direction, but also create a niche sector to separate the room in two parts, differentiating between the yin and yang activities of the bedroom.
Tip #2:
Create screens to disperse any sharp corners.
www.fswmag.com
Tip #3: Use your walls and floors to introduce colors to enhance the room
Finally, the other aspect to take into consideration is the Flying Star combination in the room. Based on the facing direction of the house, we are able to extract the Flying Star combinations of the sector, and from there, we can identify what elements would be ideal to control or to enhance the room. Through the different elements of your design palette, we can introduce any element into the room through the use of flooring materials, wall colours and ID decorative features, thereby creating an aesthetic feel that not only suits our design intent but also becoming a feng shui cure in itself. Tip #4: Identify the location of the room and its shape, and see how best we can make the room suitable for our living conditions.
Tip #5: Identify what elements you need in the room and create an appealing environment that takes care of the feng shui as well as the design intent. For more ID services and consultancy, contact Chris Yeo at chris@wofs.com or ddcmaxim@gmail.com

lots of obstacles for my client and her family, causing them to lose a lot of money. She then decided to renovate the house and asked me to choose a house for them to stay in during the renovation. I recommended placing Feng Shui enhancements during the renovation period, for protection, especially since the North was affected by the 3 Killings star. I also asked them to make sure they displayed the three celestial protectors, as this bad star would create problems from North to South. The Pi Yao and Wu Lou with Antahkarana were also needed for protection. Even though you do not live in the house during construction, you should place your Feng Shui enhancements there to make sure everything proceeds smoothly without any problems. Let me show you House A and House B; we should always try to choose the most auspicious house, even though they will only stay for a few months. HOUSE A This house was built in the period of 7, with 2 levels inside a gated community. The front door is facing Northwest 1 and the main entrance of the community is facing Southeast.
6
5
• There is no missing sector in this house. • The front gate is covered by a tree; this will block energy to the house. It is thus advisable to trim any tree at the front. • The front door is affected by the number 3 water star, so a Flaming Magic Wheel plaque should be hung above the front door to control this star. • The master bedroom is located on the second floor in the South sector. The number 2 illness star is in this sector, so I advise that a Wu Lou with Antahkarana must be displayed. There is a big beam across the bed, so a 6 rod victory windchime should be hung under the beam to balance the beam and to control the illness star, but NOT directly above where they sleep. • There is a bedroom with a balcony in the Northwest sector above the garage, which is affected by the number 5 and number 7 star, so a 5 Element pagoda plaque should be hung above the bedroom window and the garage; a Rhinoceros and Elephant pair should be placed at the balcony for protection.
www.fswmag.com
HOUSE B House B was built in the Period of 7. It is a one-level house, and the facing direction is Southeast 1 inside a cul-de-sac. The period 7 chart of House B of this house is as below, and the front door is located in the Southeast sector. • Luckily, the house is located at the side of the cul-desac, so the direct poison arrow from the long road in does not point to this house. • The floor plan is missing North and part of the Northeast sector. I recommend placing a water fixture in the North to recreate the missing North sector. • The front door is located in the Southeast and is affected by the number 7 robbery star in this period; I recommend painting the door in a blue colour and placing a blue rhinoceros here to control the robbery star. A black and blue coloured floor mat is excellent. • A barbeque grill will be placed in the Northeast sector in the backyard to activate the missing sector. • The kitchen is also located in the Northeast sector. This sector is affected by the number 5 and 3 stars. These are afflictive stars so I recommend placing the Flaming Magic Wheel and 5 Element Pagoda here to protect the kitchen. The kitchen cabinet should be painted in a white colour. The Northeast is not so good in 2010 due to Grand Duke Jupiter and the illness star. A Wu Lou should be placed in the kitchen and a Pi Yao should be placed outside the kitchen facing Northeast 3. I do not recommend placing a Pi Yao, Chi Lin or Rhinoceros inside the kitchen, as the kitchen is a place to cook; it means that all these Feng Shui enhancements will be cooked and unable to protect you. • The living room is located in the Northwest and is affected by the number 7 and 5 bad stars; a 5 Element pagoda plaque should be hung above the window. A Rhinoceros and elephant should be placed facing the backyard for protection. After comparing Houses A and B, I recommend that 4 6 5 7 1 3 my client should pick House A; the m a i n re a s o n i s 9 2 6 8 3 5 that the missing sectors of House B will affect career luck for her and 2 4 7 9 8 1 her husband, and hamper education luck for her children Before moving into House A I recommend purifying the energy, as the house has been vacant for a very long time, and the energy is very heavy. The best tool to use is natural sandalwood incense to purify the energy of the house.

PICK THE RIGHT IPAD CASE!
Recently, everyone has been talking about the new iPad and iPhone, how to get their hands on one, which applications are fun and worth buying etc. Friends exchange app information for their new toy, and look for cases and covers to protect against scratches. Most cases come in black colour; this is conventional, but it may not be the best colour for you. I’ll share here a simple method to find your personalized auspicious element and colour, so you can attract good luck every time you use your new toy. This method is based on the month and season in which you were born:

Vaastu Feng Shui By S.BS. Surendran
Investigating The Earth Vaastu Style
SOIL Classification Soil has different categories based on colour, appearance, taste, shape, slope and smell. What kind of soil is ideal depends on the specific type of activity intended for the built structure. To inspect the quality of the soil, one has to take away the top layer of the soil and dig a little portion to assess it. • A plot with predominantly red soil and which has a bitter taste is suitable for activities relating to the law; such as legal work, maintaining law & order, armed forces, administration, Government departments and so forth. • Soil which is mainly white, smells good and tastes sweet is suitable for intellectual and educational work such as schools where teaching

he Indian practice of Vaastu places great importance on the foundation of buildings, and it regards the laying of foundation as a symbolic “homage to Mother Earth”, so every care is given to ensuring the foundation is sound, holding the load of the structure on the ground and distributing this load uniformly. Vaastu investigation also warns against building on land that has potential for landslides with unstable slopes nearby. Importance is given to surrounding land topography, and checking the cosmology of stars and planets is also important. The planets are believed to have an effect on the earth and water of continents. Vaastu soil testing involves touching, smelling and even tasting the earth! This is done during preliminary investigation time when it is necessary to walk the property, breathing deeply to feel the vibration of the land. Feeling good suggests the presence of good positive energy.
occurs, or temples, newspaper offices and other Academy type work where education takes place. • Soil in shades of Yellow or Green and having a mild smell and sour taste is believed to be excellent for Commercial activities, finance, businessmen, bankers, and traders. • Black dark soil with a bitter taste and pungent smell is suitable for almost everything and is considered the best kind of soil.
For example, a plot with red soil that has a pungent taste and with spiky plants having red flowers would be considered suitable for Government buildings, Court Houses and so forth. Should such attributes be lacking, then work on the exterior/interior design, layout, furniture, colours and landscaping can then be enhanced to derive greater and more positive benefits. CHECKING QUALITY OF THE SOIL Dig a square hole in the centre of the site, oriented along the cardinal directions of depth, with a width and length of 1.5 ft. Store the excavated soil elsewhere, and then fill the pit with water for the night. The next day, at day break, examine the pit and check the water level to determine the strength of the soil. Little absorption of water indicates good soil. Also, while filling the pit with water, examine the direction of water flow. When the water in the pit moves in a clockwise direction, the land is valuable as it indicates flow of positive energy in the soil; movement in the opposite direction suggests unsuitable energy flow. You can also check the compactness of the soil using another method. Here, you back fill the soil excavated into the pit. If the pit fills up with the entire soil, it is of average quality; if the pit overflows with soil, the site soil is excellent; and in case the pit does not get packed fully with the excavated soil, then you know the soil is of low quality. Compact earth occupies more space when loosened; and naturally dense and compact earth is better for carrying the structure of the building. ANALYSING THE LAND SURFACE The surface of the land reveals its intrinsic energy and here, luck is categorized as the Elephant’s back, Turtle’s back, Demon’s back and Serpent’s back.

• Elephant’s Back: This is land that is elevated in the South, Southwest, West or Northwest. Vaastu equates such land with the Indian Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi who is mounted on the elephant’s back. This kind of land will bring wealth and prosperity. • Turtle’s Back: This is land that is elevated in the middle and shallow all around. This kind of land will also generate prosperity, longevity and an accumulation of wealth for occupants. • Demon’s Back: This is land that is elevated in the Northeast and East, and such land brings knowledge luck for the children. • Serpent’s Back: Land that is elongated in EastWest directions and elevated in North and South directions is likened to a Serpent’s back. This causes negative effects on the longevity and wealth of the household and is harmful for the women of the home. Choose the correct day to cut your hair to enjoy auspicious good fortune. There is a little known and rare sutra which reveals the consequences of cutting your hair on the wrong day - AND the vast benefits of cutting it on the correct day. The right and wrong days are based on the Tibetan calendar. This sector is seriously aicted this month, as the monthly star of misfortune and the violent star join together to bring health problems and the threat of theft and robbery. Stay away from this area if you can. Place a 5 Element Bell here to control the bad chi. Illness energy causes complications or injury to the liver region. Remedy with a Wu Lou with antahkarana Symbol. Problems arise from excessive worrying. Arguments abound in the household as bad chi affects the mouth. Place the Double Horned Rhinoceros and Elephant if this is your main entrance.
64 EAST
A fortuitous month indeed as good luck comes in the form of romance and creative writing achievements. Fueled by luck from heaven, the stars combine to bring unexpected financial gain in the form of windfall luck for the household. Display a 6 Big Smooth Coins. Writers, students and those working in the media will benefit from this good energy. Enhance academic luck with a Crystal faceted Point with Mantra or a Chinese Calligraphy Set. There are indications of problems with the neck. Carry a Hum Protective Mantra tag as an amulet to protect from catching viruses and falling sick.
29 NORTHEAST
The expansion star has further strengthened the annual illness energies here. The stars are generally not auspicious for the health as they affect the hand. Avoid drinking in excess. Display the Medicine Buddha Jewel to control the malevolent energies here and wear a Wu Luo Pendant in 18K Gold. Pregnant women should avoid residing in this area this month. Those who stay in this sector should display a antahkarana Wu Lou at their bedside. Display an Image of Chung Kwai for protection. This combination brings such bad luck that nothing succeeds, so it is better to lay low.

In each of the 9 grids, you will find 2 numbers. The large number in the upper left corner indicates the monthly star. Use a reliable compass to determine your directions or locations; (the one everybody in the house uses) is located in the south sector, then refer to during that particular month. Also, if the room you occupy is located in the north
31 SOUTH
Overall luck gets a positive boost as the auspicious chi here brings the luck of career advancement and fruitful business opportunities. Display a Victory Banner or Bejewel Mystic knot here to encourage the continuity of good fortune. There are also changes likely to take place for those living in this sector. Watch out for some energies of conflict. However, the woody three star brings heartache caused by gossip and slander, as well as the possibility of legal entanglements. Remedy this with a flaming Magic Wheel Plaque or a carry the Double Ring Magic fire Wheel amulet.
86 CENTER

42 NORTH
Unfortunately, the illness star affects the internal organs especially the abdominal region. This can affect all family members, as this lethal combination is located in the North of the home. This water chi will also help to safeguard against the danger of accidental fire caused by human carelessness. insomnia
Q
Hi, I am currently suffering from insomnia. This has started in the beginning of January this year. Since then I have not been sleeping well and I am getting weaker each day. I have seen many doctors but to no avail. My animal sign is Rat. What can I do to improve my condition? Is there any remedy or cure for it? Your help is much appreciated. Thanks!
A

Oh dear... definitely you need to find a way out of this sleeplessness! Have you checked that the placement of your bed is good feng shui? Good placement means that your head should not be under a window or facing the door when sleeping. It’s best that you work out your Kua number and find a good sleeping direction for you (www.wofs.com will calculate your Kua number for free if you sign up for their newsletter). You might also want to keep your bedroom as yin as possible. This means reducing Yang energy that comes from loud music, TV, radio, computers, and any electronics that have flickering lights or release buzzing sounds regularly. Try this and see if your sleep patterns improve. As a Rat you could also be suffering from the stressful effects of the 3 Killings in the North. Placing the Three Divine Guardians in the North will keep this affliction at bay.

black ceiling
Q A
Hi... My house has a black ceiling and this is something that was done years ago. Does this bring Bad Luck or Danger for us? If so, is there a way to cure it? My dear, I’m very sorry to say that a black ceiling is definitely a no-no! A black ceiling makes it look like you have no roof over your head, and having no roof means you do not have shelter from weather and elements. Symbolically, this exposes you to accidents and loss energy that can manifest at work or at home. Having a black ceiling also makes your home too yin because it is dark all the time. Homes should always be energised with Yang energy. But don’t worry – the cure is VERY EASY. All you have to do is to paint your ceiling white! And doing this has added benefits as it will transform the energy of your house into Period 8 energy, placing it in a much better position to attract good fortune. TM

Wow what a great question! You are right in everything except the part about it turning against you. Mantras are positive affirmations of powerful scripture that just happen to be inscribed in Tibetan or Sanskrit; so it will work for you no matter what religion you follow or which spiritual figure you rely on. The mantra rings that WOFS sells are particularly powerful because they have been created with very pure and positive intentions and can invoke help from spiritual guardians in times of danger. It doesn’t matter what religion you follow, as the spiritual helpers that you personally rely on will protect you when you chant or wear these mantras. So wear your ring with confidence and it will work like a real charm.

bamboo tree
Q
Please let me know if planting a bamboo tree in front of the house is auspicious. I would like to plant some to the left side of my main door. Thank you in advance!
A
Bamboo trees have excellent meaning as they symbolise longevity and protection. They are one of the most resilient plants in the world, as they can thrive almost anywhere, and withstand windy, stormy and wintery weathers. So yes, it is great to plant bamboo trees outside your house. As long as it is not directly in front of your main door, it will bring really good fortune. Planting them a little to the left is fine, and I even recommend planting two clumps flanking your entrance. The only tricky thing is that you must keep your bamboo under control by regularly trimming it as they grow out of whack really fast. Also take care not to plant them in the Southwest as this could erode your marriage or relationship.
double happiness necklace
Q
I have a double happiness necklace which is made of titanium and I wear it 24 hours a day even when I take a shower or bath; meaning I never take it off. Is it OK to wear it all the time or should I take it off when I take a shower?
A
No worries! It is perfectly OK to wear it day and night, even when you’re in the shower. Any good feng shui pendent or jewellery can be worn at all times. However, from time to time, I recommend that you take it out for a good clean. Pendants can get dirty or tarnished after prolonged wear. If it is dirty, do give it a good clean (I have heard that Colgate and a toothbrush does a good job!). If it is tarnished, then it’s probably time to get a new one as its good energy has been used up. Plus we are not sure about titanium. This might not last long. Better to get the double happiness in gold if you want it to attract to you a really good spouse or partner.

neighbour’s boat facing my house
Q A
My neighbour across the road has a boat. Its pointy end faces my house like a poison arrow. How can I remedy this?
Advertisers contact +603-2080 3488 or email ads@wofs.com
This is probably a good time to bring some chocolate muffins to your neighbour’s house and politely bribe him into parking his boat with the sharp-end facing in! But if that doesn’t work, then you should try a more serious approach. The poison arrow is only a threat if the boat is very large, and if it is directly pointing at your main door or a very large window to your living room. If this is your situation, then you could hang a crystal just outside your door to disperse the chi coming from the poison arrow before it has the chance to enter your home. Another remedy is to hang a concave mirror facing the boat (auto shops tend to sell these). For a more powerful feng shui remedy, purchase a Yang Pa Kua from FSMegamall.com and hang it above your main door, facing the boat. Meanwhile, I have heard that a sailing ship pointed to your house can also mean wealth sailing to you!! It all depends on how threatening the pointy bit appears to you!
bird’s nests
Q
I have a tree in my back garden and recently we have noticed two birds’ nests in them with little birds. What does this
mean?
A
Excellent meaning indeed! Birds nesting in the garden bring joyous fortune. If you’re in business, it could mean that your business could expand. If you are unmarried, this might mean you are about to meet someone special. If you recently got married, this could symbolise children coming your way. Try to keep your birds happy by perhaps offering some rice or bird food in the garden and making it easy for them to live happily there. It is very bad karma to chase away or destroy bird’s nests, so please do let your gardener know not to do anything that will kick them out. www.fswmag.com

Spiritual guardians normally manifest as a trusted person in your dream to deliver special messages that are relevant to you at this time of your life. If you have had a strong and trusted bond with your father while he was alive, it could be a message of some importance like a warning or words to comfort you over a matter you are worried about. It could also be prophecy of something wonderful that will soon come. Try to remember what the nature of the dream was and how you felt in the dream when he came to you, or if there was a lesson or a quote your father often said to you while he was alive. For example, if your father often warned you not to marry so and so, or buy such and such house, then this could be the message that is relevant to your life now and is coming to you in your dream to help you.
blue roof
Q A
My roof is blue and I heard that this was bad feng shui. Please could you recommend the best colour for a
roof?
Hmm... this one really depends on the shade of blue. Blue is the colour of water and many reputable masters say that having a blue roof is akin to having water over your head. The meaning is that you’ve already drowned. Hence feng shui masters recommend we don’t have a blue roof. If it is dark blue, I really urge you to change it. If the blue is very light, it could look a lot like gray and hence, symbolise Metal instead of Water. Good colours for the roof are red, gray, brown, or any metallic colour. Green is also good but probably not as good as red or gray.

I’m very sorry to hear that you’re having a tough time at home. Children are a gift from the heavens and as parents, we always try our best. But sometimes, life can get busy and we forget to pay attention to what’s happening in their lives. I find that children act up when they need more attention from their parents or they are just hanging out with the wrong type of friends. Here’s what you can try. First, cleanse your space of all negative energies by using incense or a space cleansing bell. Then place a few perfectly round and clear crystal balls on the centre of every table in your common areas (i.e. lounge, dining, etc). This soaks up any new hostile energy and promotes peace and harmony. Then spend some real 100% quality time with your child on activities that he or she chooses. If they have naughty friends, act immediately to divert their attention to more suitable new friends. Bad influence is bad energy but this can very easily be remedied if they are young.
office desk direction
Q
I am trying to face my auspicious directions in my office as advised in your Lillian Too’s 2010 Fortune and Feng Shui book. How do I take the direction with a compass at my work place? I have my own cubicle and am sitting at an L-shaped table.
A
Very simple. Just sit down comfortable at your work desk facing the direction you would normally work facing, and place your compass on the table. Turn the compass dial so that the red needle aligns with North. Then read the direction you are facing. For example, if the direction in front of you is Northeast, then you are facing Northeast. What is important is the direction that your body and your face is oriented, and not the actual table itself. Typically, for most working people, it is the direction of their computer monitor. If you are unable to face your auspicious Kua directions, you may also use face your horoscope animal direction except your horoscope years. For example, this year 2010 is the Tiger Year, and Tigers should not face their Tiger direction because the Grand Duke Jupiter is there.

Faces of Good Fortune
W
VERONICA VAREKOVA
e bring you the face of Veronica Varekova - the current favourite in the supermodel league. Veronica’s face is a perfect oval, long and perfectly balanced signifying success comes early and lasts a long time. Her well shaped forehead indicates high intelligence; her wellproportioned eyebrows - its shape and being set wide apart - indicates protection against excess, so her success will be long lasting. She has big almond eyes that are perfectly placed and equally set wide apart. There is honesty and integrity in the way her eyes gaze at the world. Her nose is long and high and this brings her a life of ease and comfort. She will have financial success although she may not necessarily be super rich. But because her nostrils are small and petite, she is able to invest wisely without experiencing big losses. Her mouth is full indicating a sexuality that lies just beneath her surface and her jaw line indicates she will live a long, happy and meaningful life. Born in Czechoslovakia, Veronica is the face of Victoria’s Secret. Her face has launched countless top magazine covers and fashion collections. At 33 she recently became the Goodwill Ambassador to lend her powerful face and name to the preservation of African Wildlife Foundation to draw attention to the dwindling population of zebras, wolves, mountain gorillas and other endangered species left on earth. Hurray for Veronica!!!
