PROLOGUE Urban—Nature—Culture—Daily Lives

Architecture is not only a visible individual, but also a social form that contains daily life, continues the urban texture, awaken people’s perception, and stores collective memory. The process of construction is to discover, capture and connect invisible relationships in the site, and the meaning of architecture is to make invisible things visible. In my undergraduate study, I am committed to finding my own design methodology of design and trying to explore the invisible relationship of architecture. “The field of architecture is the city and the description of the city is the key to the interpretation of architecture.” ——Aldo Rossi—— Architecture is part of our city, which constitute urban texture and cultural content. In my first design, I delved in an academic design about a community centre on the junction of new and old urban areas. By comparing the various activities exist respectively in the old town and the new town, I applied the traditional Chinese street culture to the architectural design while fulfilling the modern utility. From this experience, I gained insights that architect should try to explore the architectural relationship with the existing built environment and the local context, so that new approach can be developed to address social problems.

06 PERCEPTION CONDUCTION

“If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinity.” ——William Blake—— Architecture is the extension of human perception, which connect ourselves with outside environment. Modern architecture, however, tends to isolate our connection to nature, shielding our perception of nature. Enclosed spaces separate people from natural environment, and the cold concrete alienates buildings from human beings. In order to get out of this predicament, in my second design, I devoted myself to exploring the awakening of human perception through architecture, trying to make architecture a medium connecting between nature and human beings and enlightening people's thinking about life.

"Half of the building depends on thought; the other half derives from existence and sprit." ——Ando Tadao—— I believe that architecture is the container of culture, and through the study of traditional architecture we can discover new methodology that reflect local aesthetics, rituals and behavioural habits. So, in my design of campus theatre, I endeavour to explore the relationship between architectural space and traditional construction techniques. In my view, we need not only to explore new forms for architecture, but also need to connect with the past. This drove me to focus on the translation of traditional architecture language and the reformation of the traditional construction techniques.

Campus Theater Design Architecture Design Studio : 2019 Spring Individual Work Lcation: Hunan Changsha Tutor: Lu Jiansong ( ljs@hnu.edu.cn )

"The health, the wood, the cultivated fields, the uncultivated zones, are related to an inseparable whole, the memory of which man carries with him" ——Pierre Vidal de la Blache—— Architecture is closely related to our daily lives. We live in private houses and we interact in public space. Architecture connects every groups of society. In my fourth project, I hope that public space can be a connection point for people's daily lives and connect people's activities. Different kind of activities take place in the buildings and to the end become part of the building scenes. The new spatial sequence reshapes the road landscape of the village and becomes part of collective lives. Architecture is visible constructions with invisible meanings, which have an infinite relationship with human beings. I think the exploration of my own architectural methodology will be a continuous process, so I will constantly explore the invisible part of architecture and discover the relationships among architecture, nature, and daily life, hoping that I can create the invisible inner spirits through the visible construction.

This is a collision of modernity and tradition and a fantastic fusing of fast and laid-back lifestyles. Based on such particularity, I was committed to exploring the relationship between community life and spatial attributes in the area. Through comparative analysis of the old town streets and traditional drawing, I extracted the relationship between behavior, space and scene. This relationship serves as the foundation of the design. Daily behaviors are representations of collective memory, and life scenes are mappings of local culture. In the design, behaviors are embedded into the space, and the life scene is regarded as the content of the construction. Through the way of scene depiction and event narrative, the relationship between the building and the city is reconstructed. Buildings are no longer independent as individuals, but become part of the urban life scene. Continuing the texture of the old town street, the design reorganizes multiple social functions and injects new vitality into the site, so as to reconstruct the relationship between future and past of the site.

CONCEPT GENERATION

1. Traffic Analysis

The site is located at the junction of the old and new urban areas, one side is a closed large-scale residential area, the other side is an open old residential area. There are various kinds of behaviors in the inner tunnels of the old city. Business, conversation, entertainment and so on, different behaviors interweave in the lane, making the old community full of vitality. So, I started to design from the analysis of the activities in both local and traditional streets. Then, I trid to utilize the street program in the design of community center, aiming to integrate the building into the local street texture as well as activate various activities that would happened in the community center.

PERCEPTION CONDUCTION

The course of human development is a process that keeps away from the land. The more civilized fujiman climbs up, the farther away the new leaves are from the ground where they take root. In the modern world of high buildings and people coming and going, we have less and less contact with the land, and our feelings towards the land are gradually cold.

Nature Museum Design Architecture Design Studio : 2018 Spring Individual Work Lcation: Hunan Xupu Tutor: Jiang Suqi ( jsq@hnu.edu.cn )

This building plan combines the landscape structure of the hills and fields of changlefang, Xupu. Through the spatial presentation of the seed growth process, people can experience the process of waking up, breaking through, rising, staying away from falling and returning in the space of different high-rise buildings. By inviting soil, water, wind and sunlight as part of the building materials, people can get away from their daily experience, Greatly enlarge the sensitivity of perception, then regain the feeling of land, and think about the internal relationship between life and land. Here, architecture is no longer a space, but a body of life. People swim in the space, like the soul in the body, peep into the outside world through the opening of the building, and also feel the course of life through the sequence of space.

STRATEGY

After investigation, we found that the site has a rich agricultural culture. I analyze from the three aspects of activities, landscape and culture. Through analysis and induction, I try to build a network system that promotes the development of local industries without damaging the local culture.

Path to Forest

In the design, I summarized the different landscape elements in the site, such as farmland, fish ponds, woods, and river banks, and then connected them through the design of platforms, paths, and walls. On the one hand, the field will be an agricultural production site, where farmers can cultivate and breed in the field; on the other hand, it will be an experience park for tourists from other places. As a result, the design links natural elements and human behavior to create an interactive place where agricultural activities, natural landscapes, and visitor activities are integrated with each other.

Seeds germinate, grow, bloom, wither and die in the land. It's the same with people. Based on the growth process of seeds in the land, through analyzing the relationship between seeds and land, wind, light, rain and other natural elements, key nodes in the life process are extracted and spatialized, so that users can sense the relationship between life and nature. 1. The construction site of the plan is in the campus of Hunan University. Now the surrounding teaching building and swimming pool have been built, and the west side of the base is adjacent to Lushan South Road. There are good landscape views of Tianma mountain and Yuelu Mountain on the East and west sides. The external image of the building is not only a part of the overall form of the campus, but also a part of the interface between the city and the environment. The internal space carries on the typical space elements of other traditional buildings, namely, the veranda and courtyard, in which the functional subjects of the large and small theatres are placed. In addition to the function of cultural and artistic exchange and performance, students' activity space and public education space are embedded in the building at the same time, make it a dynamic art center.

Facade Concept

It is hoped that the exterior facades of the building can enable people on the street to see the activities of tourists insideof the building vaguely, dim and unreal, and thatthe fgure of people can move brightly and make passers-by want to enter the view of the building with curiosity. Therefore, I choose the translucent materials on the facade. The exterior facades is made of transparent concrete (LiTraCon), so that pedestrians on the road can vaguely see the fgures in the building during the daytime. In the evening, like the traditional Chinese shadowplay, the shadow overlaps to form visual interaction.

Close to the city road is a prosperous commercial scene, while the interior seems to be separated from the city noise, showing the style of the village in the city. I made an in-depth research on Tianma village, and tried to restore the rural landscape and vitality by drawing analogy. At the same time, through the acupunctural community transformation, the space renewal and community cultivation of Tianma village are realized, forming a benign social ecosystem. Road and its space on both sides is an important public space in the community, which connects the courtyard and natural space in the area. The design starts from the spacialization of the community road structure, by inserting the public node space, making the road not only the the contact line of residents, but also the occurrence point of the activities. Daily life is the beginning and the center of design. Through the investigation of residents' lives, the design tries to make different people's lives linked together. Farms, activity centers, libraries, stores, form a series of road spaces. People interact, walk and work on the road, and thus present a lively and happy community scene.
