Shanghai 2025 the Regeneration of Traditional Manufacturing Block Academic project , Master Degree thesis 2017/2018 Mentor: Ivica Ivo Covic

The ongoing shift of industry 4.0 brings the revolution to traditional Chinese manufactury. In 2015, China charted out a 300 billion plan to become nearly self-sufficient by 2025 in a range of important industries. Our thesis aims to find new forms of factory building adapting the industrial technology trends in Chinese developed cities. Starting with mapping the industrial heritages of Shanghai, we found the site located in old city center which striked us with its surrounding of traditional cultural heritage, and also next to a traditional manufacturing and commercial street, which means the area contains a huge potential in business. The traditional handmade artcrafts used to be a main breadwinner for the local people, but now it becomes just handicraft known by few old folks. So we come up the idea of utilizing the new technology to reactive the traditional artworks, creating new kind of factory blocks mixed with different function of manufacturing, selling, living , shipping and recreation. Surrounding by the tourism traditional business streets, all the groundfloor is designed to be open with non-stopping walking grid to return the spatial feeling of traditional alley and increase the commercial facade. The inner part is located the open market in which the goods produced inside the blocks can be sold. We take the reference of the fluent space of Aldo Van Eyck, with this flexible and transparent identity , we break the main factory floors to several flowing inner layers so that the process of manufacturing can be an important visual effects in our project to share the knowledge and experience. This main idea are used in the main 4 types of factory units which are combined with different function and space according to the site environment. The Chinese young people nowadays is high on new trends, we bring this chance for them to understand and protect the traditional culture. With the benefit of adavanced technology, everyone could be the artist to deign their own masterpieces.

Factory architecture has often been a blunt reflection of technological and societal conditions. Promoting exposure of automated equipment, constant activity is provided to the factory’s surroundings. Employing this proposal as critical device, the potential of industrial presence to contribute to a cityscape is explored and further debate hopefully provoked.

Ground Floor Plan The north blocks are shops to continue the existing commercial street, the south blocks are designed as open gate to the main residential area in our site. The inner part is located the open market in which the goods produced inside the blocks can be sold, which we take the reference of the fluent space of Aldo Van Eyck. And this flexible and transparent identity we also applied into our factory space as a main design idea.

Petals and Mountain Large Span Exhibition Center, Nanjing, China Academic project , April- June/2014 Mentor: Wensheng Tang (CSADI)

“While picking asters' neath the Eastern fence, my gaze upon the Southern mountain rests, the widely known poetry "The Peach Colony" was written by famous poet of ancient China Yuanming Tao when he lived in seclusion. He retired to his home vilage and lived there for the next twenty-three years till his death. This piece of writing is regarded as one of the earliest pieces about Utopiamsm in Chinese literature. The landscape discribed in this poetry makes people feel leisurely and open-minded . The design extracts the native element including petals and mountain from the landscape poetry, trying to creat the beautiful contour line of the landscape painting and the feeling of the open and transparent inside building. The roof is made of special-shaped steel trusses and the main truss is formed by 22 trusses, meanwhile, the net structure is consisted of plentry of transverse bars to widen the space. All the steel truss branches centralize on one point , emphasizeing the high scale sense of space , and create strong visual effect for the center exhibition.

Looking4walls City Suburban Youth Hostel, Milan, Italy Academic project , March- June /2016 Mentors: Cino Zucchi, Paola Sturla, Matilde Cassani

The site of the new youth hostel was located in the center of the city. After the analysis related to the different hostels typologies we understood what is initials and necessary for people who use it, defining a hierarchy of spaces needed to satisfy what different targets od people want. The plot of the project is near the historical center of Milan, between the Duomo and the shopping street, via Torino. Nowadays this area is occupied by an old garage which will be dismanteled in few years, It was very important to deal with this context because it is the historical center characterized by different buildings that marked the history of Milan such as the police building designed by Portaluppi exactly located in front of the area. The aim was to design not only a hostel but also a multi-purpose area. Surrounded by the hard closed building eleavtions, the site was almost burried inside the city blocks without activities neither people stopping by, consequently we decide to have a new idea of reversing the trditional closing inner yards outside to have a inner private hostel surrounded by public yards, providing cozy space for not only hostel but also the area. Yards was desigend closed by several stone walls with windows and entrances to keep the privacy. Each yard acts different function according to the site environment and the project plan. Fold-line elevations were faced with different yards to have wider view and the increased surface of balconyies encourage the chance meeting between people.

TRANSPARENC(it)Y the New Open Piacenza City, Italy Academic project , OC summer school Sep/2017 Mentors: Alfredo Brillembourg, Guya Bertelli

Transparenc(IT)y, a reflection on, and development of utopian theories with the contemporary urban environment as a setting. ‘60s artist Hélio Oiticica inspired the concept, where U-TT takes his notion of “life is movement” from the body into the city. This future city concept is governed by a manifesto where people and movement are central. THE INDEPENDENT showcases the results of these case studies in the Carlo Scarpa foyer, where an architectural model translates the philosophy of this alternative city concept as a solution for the hypothetical future city of Piacenza. An informative graphic wall juxtaposes life in a generic present-day city with that of the future city. Transparenc(IT)y is a sensual and playful city. Experience life in the city with an animated 3D flyover or see how gaming can involve citizens in planning their city. Today, the Piacenza city is mainly consisted of western agricultural land, the old city center and the disusing industrail area in the eastern city. Based on mapping research, three design principles, inclusive farm land, sharing community and resilient industrial park were came up to applied in selected areas.Without excess interefering city, a shining through public life, a way of proceeding with clearency were created from the whole agro field to productive city.
