PAST & PRESENT TAKE THE TOUR: Light, bright, cosy and grown-up, we love Chapter House - a thoughtful and modern renovation of a childhood home turned into a forever home. Stepping inside this meticulously made-over family home in Melbourne’s Carlton North, we love how Mietta Walsh has respectfully renewed the home in such a way that it balances the old and the new so thoughtfully. This became our brief and platform for the furniture, artwork and accents we introduced.

Recreating nostalgia I N T E R V I E W W I T H M I E T TA W A L S H

The cultural zeitgeist that surrounds a ‘throwback’ needs no explanation really, it’s ingrained in our daily lexicon. We want to re-live those magic moments, but we want to make them now too (hello #tbt). Perhaps it’s because when old meets new we play in a space that embodies nostalgia, while creating room for a fresh horizon. It’s not a bad place to be. For Mietta Walsh breathing new life into sentimentality comes in the form of her childhood home, “I was born in the home I live in now with my husband and two boys. Mum passed away 8 years ago, and my father suggested we raise our sons here. It felt right,” says Mietta.

We wanted to renovate but we were conscious of honouring the architectural history of the house, so it was important to bring on board someone we trusted. We worked with Tom Robertson Architects – Tom is a dear friend – who made the experience great. The process was easy. Tom clearly understood our brief and vision and kept us informed, but just ran with it. Dad got to see the renovation too, before he passed away, and that warms my heart.” The double-fronted Victorian terrace in Carlton North retains its old-world charm with the original façade along with ornate rose-adorned ceilings and a marble fireplace, “The brief to Tom was to keep it clean, light and simple. The back of the house is completely new, and some parts have been revamped, like my childhood bedroom which is now an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe.” “We added skylights and chose a black, white and marble base colour palette so that we could inject our own flavour through furniture and décor.” To create depth to the pared back space, Mietta worked with the Fenton & Fenton interior styling team to realise her aesthetic vision, “I wanted the interior design to be inviting and create warmth and I was really happy with the direction the team took. I just want to sit in this space they’ve created! After the last two years we’ve had, spending so much time at home, it really makes you appreciate your surroundings.”

Set the mood for Autumn with decorative accents, layers, artwork and tactile accessories. The interior styling balances yin and yang energy through a mixed palette of pink and green for the furniture, and deeper colours like blue and aqua are accentuated through décor, “They used so many pieces and it amazes me how it doesn’t overwhelm, the team created openness even with such a rich colour palette.” The styling team focused on mixing pop décor with classic and vintage styles for the main furniture pieces to create balance from the entrance hall right through to the outdoor deck, “They created a library just through styling which blew me away, and I feel like overall, every time I look at the space, I experience something differently, or see something new. I remember Carrie Bradshaw once said she was cheating on fashion with homewares, and now I know exactly how she feels!”

For Lucy Fenton, owner of Fenton&Fenton, escaping to her seaside weekender in Anglesea is the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of Melbourne’s city life. BY LAURA BARRY

Lucy Fenton and her family have been holidaying in the coastal town of Anglesea for more than 10 years, but it was only last year that they managed to snag a sensational weekender of their own. “We love the beaches! We often go for a long walk in the morning and explore the rockpools, then head back down in the afternoon for a swim and surf,” says Lucy. Located just an hour-and-a-half from Melbourne, Anglesea is the perfect place for a quick getaway, but it was the character of the home that won her over. “I love the high ceilings, exposed beams, timber panelling and exposed bricks,” says Lucy. “We knew we could make it into something that was unique.”

RECIPE

WATERMELON PUNCH Method 1. Slice off the bottom of your watermelon approx 3cm deep so that you have a flat bottom on your watermelon and it can stand upright without tipping over. 2. Then cut a lid at the top of the watermelon approx 1/3 of the height.

SHOP THE LOOK

3. Begin scooping out the flesh inside the watermelon and place the flesh into a bowl until you’ve reached about 5cm deep. Then stick an immersion blender into the inside of the watermelon and begin blending. 4. Ladle and strain out the juice into a bowl. 5. Repeat the process by continuing to scoop the flesh with a spoon until you hit white rind of the watermelon. 6. Scoop the flesh from the lid and place into the watermelon to blend and strain as well. 7. Once all the flesh has been scooped out and strained out of the watermelon, strain back in approx 4 litres of the juice back in (approximately 2/3 of the way up). You should have nearly 2 litres left of juice which you can place into a jug for mocktails. 8. Then pour in at least half of your bottle of gin, the tonic water, juice of the limes, hand torn mint and then handfuls of ice into the watermelon. Stir with a ladle to chill down. Taste and add more of what you wish to your liking. 9. Ladle the punch into glasses filled with ice and enjoy!

Meet our Gallery expert. ALEX RAMSDALE Originally from Auckland, New Zealand Alex Ramsdale, our resident Gallery Manager and art expert, spent four years working and living in London, UK, before putting down roots in Melbourne, where she has devoted her time representing artists and furthering her appreciation and understanding of art in the retail/commercial space. We are lucky to have her onboard to guide the direction and curation of our shows in our new Gallery Space. Tell me a little about your background and how you landed the role as Gallery Manager at Fenton & Fenton? I came to work for Fenton & Fenton in 2019 after returning to Melbourne post a stint living abroad. I had been working at Tate Galleries in London as a retail manager for their exhibition shops and helped set up the high-end shop Tate Edit. Here we sold furniture and lighting by Jasper Morrison, alongside limited edition prints and other small homewares. Fenton & Fenton was a natural progression. The playful and bold use of colour and pattern, as well as the opportunity to represent and sell the work of the many extremely talented Australian artists really excited me. I initially started as store manager, and then in 2021 when Lucy decided to open The Gallery, we both knew this was the dream job for me. And, here I am living out that dream each day.

What do you look for when selecting artists to represent? I look for uniqueness. It’s great seeing work by artists and thinking ‘I’ve never seen that before’. There should be a distinct style in the artwork that makes you recognise it almost immediately. Other attributes can include an interesting use of colour, finesse in the composition or technique, and continuation of practice. Tell us a little about your personal art journey and practice? I remember being recognised as a good painter at a very young age and continued to adore art making throughout my school career. After completing a Postgraduate Bachelor of Visual Arts at AUT in Auckland I held a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings at Sanderson Gallery. I then moved to Melbourne soon after this. I lived in Melbourne for just over a year and continued to paint and draw but did not pursue it as a career quite as wholeheartedly. My practice, when I make time for it, mainly consists of abstract oil painting inspired by nature and neo-impressionist pointillism. It is

Beyond the canvas, a small-town street became the bridge between a shared human experience for artists Melanie Macilwain and Liam Murphy. What started as a neighbourly interaction has become a meaningful point of community and connection for the pair who share a signature form of expression – line art. While their paintings distinctly differ in stylistic rhythm, they align in essence as both artists approach their work from a place of humility and play.
