Step inside. It’s warm in here.
A Welcoming Winter Home
When winter rolls round we can’t help but get into hibernation mode. Cosy nights in and creature comforts are generally high on the agenda. The weekends spent lazing in bed….and afternoons spent reading with a cuppa in hand. It’s bliss! But after what feels like an endless hibernation that’s been our reality in 2020, winter is going to be different. Sleep-ins will be swapped out for long breakfasts with friends, alone time will become real face-to-face connections, and take-out for two will be intimate dinner parties for as many as people as we can invite around. It’s a new kind of bliss. This lookbook is dedicated to helping you style your space with connection in mind. From textural finishes, to playing with proportions and treasures that twinkle, we want to help you breathe new life into your space. It’s the season for a rebirth, which we’d typically associate with spring but as life would have it, it’s going to be winter.

The art of layering in design is about finding the right mix of colour, texture and shape to create depth and richness in a room. Think opposite colours on a colour wheel for a bold clash or juxtaposed patterns in varied sizes for art and rugs. Introduce texture with cushions and throws and balance with planters that have smooth or glossy surfaces.

Q&A
WITH ARCHITECT TOM ROBERTSON
In the leafy green Horace Street, sits a beautiful heritage cottage revived by renowned architect Tom Robertson that strikes the perfect balance between old and new. For this project, we had the pleasure of embellishing this home with foundational and inspirational pieces, defining each space with intriguing pieces of art, furniture and homewares that delight the eye. We sat down with Tom to discuss design, challenges and his tips for those embarking on a renovation.
Q&A TOM ROBERTSON
What was the initial brief for the renovation? The initial brief was for a contemporary addition to a beautiful heritage cottage. Combining both new and old, the house included three bedrooms, a study, large laundry, powder room, master ensuite. The brief also required maximum natural daylight and strong connection between the primary living areas. What were the biggest challenges you came across in this project? Like a lot of projects in this area, council requirements presented several challenges. The resulting built form is shaped to minimise the impact on the street frontage and neighbouring properties. Other than the facade, what other original features did you carry through the renovation? Other than the main front facade, very little of the original fabric was retained. The second room was converted into a walk-in robe and master ensuite. Only the hallway period details were salvaged. What was your design intent for this project? The concept for this project was to restore the original facade, while developing the new addition beyond in a distinctly contemporary aesthetic. Using a restrained palette, the occupant’s furniture and art inject life into the space.
Q&A TOM ROBERTSON
What is your favourite element of the renovation? The light in the rear living area floods through an oversized highlight window, and it is such a joy to be in. Where there any hidden discoveries along the way? During construction we noticed the original hallway was very dark. We added an extra skylight which made the world of difference. The original kitchen design incorporated matte white reconstituted stone. Moments before fabrication, we substituted for natural Carrara - now one of the features of the house. Do you have any advice for people embarking on a renovation? Use an architect. Understand the true cost of renovation. Including the additional cost which are so often over looked. Invest in the right areas of the house. Longevity is fundamental for items which are used regularly. Don’t fall victim to the trends. Typically (but not always) we suggest a restrained material palette and allow the furnishings to provide the colour and personalisation. These can easily be updated if need be. Focus on natural light. This brings so much happiness and is crucial in the success of any project.
