FERNANDO BRIZ
DOTTORE IN ARCHITETTURA E DISEGNO URBANO
-Renzo Piano-

MACCHINA Flexible architecture is a seductive concept that invites us to dream of spaces that are changed voluntarily by the human, thus adapting them to their needs and immediate activities, generating utopic-almost-infinite configurations in the same place. Starting from this idea and avoiding flexibly empty spaces where furniture is the main character, Macchina is born from the premise of implementing a versatile and physically adaptable architecture that is therefore helpful to meet the needs of a real situation implemented within an existing building which by itself consists of its own historical character of high degree of importance in the city. Macchina is a project inserted in an existing building, the Politeama Auditorium at Como, Italy where the fusion is not only physical but also programmatical in order to reinforce an existing identity. The project covers three architectural scales (urban, architectonic and interior) resulting a complete design network. Macchina is a project with a background that involves various theories of architecture which throw the beginnings of a concept of architecture in motion. The project invites us to explore and live the fusion of the historical identity of a building with a physical and programmatic flexibility of a new architectural project.

URBAN MACCHINA:
1. Urban Devices / Open Spaces
2. Program and Connections
3. Activity Network
The concept on which the urban project of Macchina is based is a very simple idea. It is based on an analogy with current machines which are subject to a specific programming that through a connection, the result is an specific activity. In order to understand the concept, it is necessary to break down each of the elements that develop the programming: 1. DEVICE / INPUT: The device in this design analogy is a building with a unique character in the city of Como. (Urban Activator). The input itself is the function of the building. (Program)
1. Device / INPUT
2. INPUT Insertion
3. OUTPUT / Connection
2. INPUT INSERTION: The Input is inserted into the device, generating a programming language, a unique character to the building in question. 3. OUTPUT / CONNECTION: The result of the previous step evokes in an Output (Activity), that is, a tangible action that is achieved through a direct connection between the aforementioned elements and the Output itself. 4. URBAN TYPOLOGY: The final result of the concept derives in a building (Device) with a specific program (Input) that through a direct connection such as a public space, generates anOutput (Activity) generated from the building’s program. To complete the urban project Macchina, a system of urban stages of light, economical and versatile construction, (scaffolding), was designed. The general design of the urban stage consists of a 2m x 2m modular platform. This basic design can be multiplied to generate a diverse range of stages for different performances, depending on the number of people and the act to be performed. For example, the students of the La Macchina School of Music can perform some musical events in one of the public spaces of the urban project network.
4. Urban Typology Performative Device
URBAN MACCHINA
1. ESSENCE: One of the first reasons to consider to start the design process is precisely the fact that despite the state of abandonment in which the Politeama finds itself, over the years it has had a particular character, its own essence. This is one of the strongest arguments to consider to generate the architectural program, since Macchina is just that, a reprogramming of the original Politeama software, art, performance and music. LINK: Due to the abandonment, it is normal that the building over time has suffered a disconnection with the city of Como. Currently, despite the great location of the building (corner between Via Tollomeo Gallio - Viale Felice Cavallotti) on building lacks any type of urban connection since it is completely closed and lattice, sunk into oblivion. One of the premises of Macchina is the connection. The aim is not only to give Politeama its rightful place in Como, but at the same time, to generate a new urban corridor. DEVICE: The Politeama, speaking from a physical point of view, due to the lack of maintenance, presents various material and structural damages throughout its geometry. One of the most notable and, in fact, dangerous damages, is the one found in the backstage of the building. The structural damage is very advanced and even in a few years, it could collapse. La Macchina proposes to remove this old device and insert a new one, keeping the original programming but with current avantgrade.

Devices Diagram
POLITEAMA`S URBAN CONNECTION
MOTION MEANS EVOLUTION: A building created to be flexible, to change, to adapt ...Macchina base programming strategy consists of three different devices: Device 1 - POLITEAMA Device 2 - POLITEAMA`S MAIN STAGE Device 3 - MACCHINA The three main devices have an individual programming that can work by itself. At the same time, the 3 devices can work in different configurations with the idea of combining their components and generating a broader programming. The programming of La Macchina therefore tends to change depending on the connection configuration to which the devices are subject.

COMMONS OF FUSION New York is one of the most interesting and caothic cities in the world. There are some particular characteristics that make New York a unique city and one of those is the diveristy of people. The project title is derived from the intention of developing Roosevelt Island to become an attraction for people living in Manhattan and Queens through creating a sequence of nodes “Commons” that act as public spaces with different atmospheres and serving different functions in order to generate spaces for interaction and integration “Fusion” of all different races, ages, interests, groups in trial to merge between educational, recreational, cultural, leisure and co-working spaces all oriented to public spaces, landscape and waterfront.

1. Existing Conditions
2. Definition of 3 main nodes and its connection
The main concept of the design is trying to act to the existing situation of the island and taking full advantage of the potential of having “Cornell Tech Campus” buildings on one end of the project area and the “Historical Ruin of the Hospital” and “Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park and Memorial”. Considering these two areas as main attraction nodes on the island, the design strategy is to connect them through a main path passing through a third node in the center of the path designing the new mixed use intervention of the project around it. Starting with a linear path going through the three zones where all different functions are placed on both sides of the path creating a central space giving more advantage to the Island borders to be designed as waterfront public spaces and landscape areas with visual relationship to Manhattan and Queens. Playing with the shape of the path one side adjacent to educational and co-working buildings was kept linear and on the other side where most public functions are the path started to deform in shape of cracks reflecting on the shape of masses and their orientation in a way to differentiate between functions and create a dynamic path and spaces.

PLANTING SEEDS As in almost all the biggest cities around the world, Milano is a city that suffers a constant expansion. This produces an exponential urban growth, phenomenon which generates that the zones in the periphery of the city get absorbed by the urbanization. The site where the project is located has a particular atmosphere. It is a unique boundary where the city diffuses and merges itself with the agricultural context in the south of Milano. The cascine are the characteristic architectural and social typology of this unique site and due to the urbanization and the development of agricultural mass production, they are in constant deterioration. Planting Seeds explains an idea of preservation, regeneration and green connection between the identity of the place and the city itself. This connection will be spread from the agricultural lands reaching the city but leaving in the way seeds of health.

3. Planting Seeds Design Process
Status: Academic Urban Master Plan School: Politecnico di Milano Year: 2019 Role: Design Lead Design team: Fernando Briz (Mexico) Francesco Fusaro (Italy) Ramtin Meyghani (Iran) Amedeo Valente (Italy) The urban proposal reflects the intention of connectivity in different ways of mobility, prioritizing the clean transportation and sustainable mobilization such as pedestrian, bicycle and public transportation systems. Since the new metro line is under construction, after the urban analysis, the connectivity became the first issue to solve. The metro station of San Cristoforo will bring more people to the district and the density will increase. This has a direct impact into the functional proposal of the project that will seek to satisfy this future need of expansion. Saying this, the first seed to be planted is mixed use building units (commerce, housing and offices). Devices that cover the expansion and litigate it as well adding a new functional urban typology to the district. After the analysis done in the site, it was also noticed that there is a lack of health care services in the zone which means that a new Hospital is needed to be planted. This big seed will provide to this district a new health care atmosphere that in addition with the agricultural identity, gives more strength and viability to the concept, the roots get stronger. To complete the master plan, it was necessary to plant two more seeds in order to fulfill all the needs for the people in terms of health care. The third seed is a Community Hub that includes a Library and a Sport Center. This type of function is also lacking in the site and to have a function like this means to create spaces of interaction and wellness, branches that bring together the rich human diversity that Milano has. The branches of interaction will spread creating not just urban connections but human networks. The fourth seed that completes the project is the Research Center. A space for people dedicated to the study of many health care disciplines. This will supply the site with a high-tech function in which labs, universities, hospitals, industries and many other kinds of technological researches will merge to the study and development of technologies for the human wealth.

RCR The design concept starts from creating a building whose green spaces are predominant, contemporary, alive, pedestrian, with public spaces, interactive and dynamic. Based on these premises the design responds to the site, a privileged site with monumental trees that become the central element of the architectural proposal. The central space of the project is a tribute to these beings who become masters of architecture. The intention is that all uses of the building (retail, offices and housing) live that green environment, offering views of great aesthetic quality and natural light inputs. The architecture is dynamic and seductive, inviting and provoking that all the users that live, work and realize their purchases, stimulate their senses to live a full experience of environmental quality. Always with a direct and an interactive relationship between the interior and exterior of the architectural project.

Status: Mixed - Use Building Year: 2017 - 2015 Role: Member of the design team. CREDITS: Dialog (Canada) Rojkind Arquitectos (Mexico City) Alvear Arquitectos (Mexico City) Fernando Valdès Rendering (Mexico City) The concept of design goes hand in hand with the principles of design that have been menitioned before. Create a building with urban sense, predominant green spaces, contemporary, lively, pedestrian, interactive and dynamic.
Architectural Program: Retail: With an innovative proposal the project will have stores of different ranges.
Housing: Through different types of housing, it is intended to attract a wider market of customers, offering pleasant interior and exterior spaces, taking advantage of the local climate.
Restaurants: The gastronomical international offer in the main target of the restaurants.
Beer Garden: With a privileged location, the Beer Garden seeks to be a unique space in the area, attracting a younger market and making RCR a dynamic place.
Offices: The office offer is based in multifunctional spaces where can be placed differend types of business centers.
Market: Taking advantage of the local gastronomic offer and creating spaces to attract international gastronomy, we propose a market that offers a great variety of products and attracts people of all ages and social strata.
Recess: RCR will be an exculsive project, but with a great
urban impact to Costa Rica, so there will be many public spaces and many recess zones where people can go to shop, eat something or just go to relax
Based on these premises, the design concept resorted to the site, to a privileged terrain with spectacular trees, that become the central element of the architectural proposal. The central space is a tribute to these living beings who become the owners of space. The intention is that all built spaces, whether retail, office or housing, live mostly that green environment; Offering the most possible views and natural light inputs. The organic forms of the buildings arise for several reasons: by adapting to the geometries of the treetops and by the respect and integration of the surrounding topography to the site. The intention is that the project mimetice with the nature for which Costa Rica is famous. The buildings mostly offer terraces with areas with gardens to soften the architecture. In the same way, the buildings are smoothed in their geometry, reducing as the level rises. This geometrical gesture also responds to the sunlight that enters the central space, which is the heart of the project, just like the terraces. The architecture is dynamic, seductive and inviting, inviting and provoking all users to live, work and make purchases in spaces that stimulate them to live an experience of visual and climatic comfort. Always with an interactive relationship between the interior and the exterior.

Urban Axo View 1: ACCESSES
The interesting thing about this architectural project was the way the design process took place. The chief architect of the office, Franco Luppis, who also works as a great painter, started the architectural project from an oil canvas, carrying the ideas of abstract art on architecture. With this, the building acquires an even more artistic and user-sensitive character. This building, in urban terms, comes to regenerate an area that has been commercially forgotten and little exploited. The building is located between the Udine and Cimiano metro stations, a zone that have abundant areas for commerce, recreation and offices, which make the area commercially interesting and attractive to catalyze economic and social activity. Architecturally, the tower of Via Marazzani 5 has 4 apartments per floor of 120 square meters each with terraces connected to the most important living spaces of the house. This gives the building, on the faรงade, an even broader sense of depth and spatial freedom, which in the end, gives the building an aesthetic character.

GRAN SASSO 50 The architectural project is based on designing a co-working space in an abandoned building. This building is located in a strategic area in the city of Milano, where there is ample urban equipment in terms of transportation and connectivity. It is an area very close to the Politecnico di Milano therefore, the young population is very high and in search of spaces like the one that the architectural project offers. After an analysis, it was concluded that the architectural typology of co-working space was the most viable option. The abandoned building had the function of being a cinema. The space inside the building is wide and flexible, saying this, the architectural intervention is affordable in terms of structure and interior usable space. These types of work typologies are increasingly requested in cities such as London, Paris, Lisbon, Madrid, among many more.

Status: CO-WORKING Space Year: 2019 Role: Design Leader CREDITS: STUDIO D` ARCHITETTURA PRADERIO (MILANO) The architectural project consists in generating a flexible space. Movement and fluidity are the premises of the concept itself, creating comfortable work spaces for the people. The organic design of the project offers the user a wide variety of stations to work where the furniture acquires the same organic character of the project. A fundamental element of the design is the inclusion of nature to the work stations. Throughout the project you can see trees that generate a sense of freedom and ecology that make the design proposal even more interesting. The architectural intervention consists of 2 levels: the ground floor where a large projection room was located and with the design it is transformed into one big space with 3 platforms full of workstations where the connection between them is given through ramps to include within the project disabled people. The first level had 2 regular projection rooms, in the project they are transformed into a single area of work stations divided into 3 platforms.
Ground floor sketched proposal: 3 platforms with organic working stations
1st Level sketched proposal: 4 platforms with organic working stations
For architectural intervention, light is a fudamental element, especially natural light. On the double height ceiling on both the ground floor and the first level, different domes were opened to allow the entry of natural lighting into the building. With this, the co-working space becomes even more efficient for the user.

VILLAZUL Villazul Bellavista is an architectural project that aims to solve the needs of elderly people. The project is located in a very favorable context to generate beautiful views full of life and vegetation. The site is immersed in a very wooded area, near a golf field and far away from the chaotic urban environment of Mexico City. The premise of the project is to create spaces with a high quality living performance, spaces with particular characteristics for elderly people and a high sensory stimulation. The users will lose the notion of being in a cold hospital and will always have the awareness of being in their second home. The architectural result is a simple building, which uses as a guiding base of design the module, generating orthogonal volumes that make more efficient the diverse spaces that the project has in order to create a high spatial quality. Status: Housing Building Year: 2020 Role: Design Leader CREDITS: STUDIO D` ARCHITETTURA PRADERIO (MILANO) This Housing Building located in Milano, part of the premise of creating an iconic building in the eastern part of the city. The architectural intention consists of a dynamic and colorful building, which seeks to integrate into the Lambro park. The commercial target of this building is to create medium / high-rise housing, so the spatial quality within the apartments was one of the main aspects to consider of the architectural design.

This building, in urban terms, this building seeks the premise of maintaining in composition, rhythm, and materiality, the proportion of the buildings in the neighborhood. It is part of the construction regulations in that area of the city to generate a homogeneous architectural environment. Architecturally, the building of Via Monte Generoso 29 has 13 apartments in 7 stories. In average, the apartments have aprox. 60 square meters, each with terraces connected to the most important living spaces of the house. This gives the building, on the faรงade, this dynamic sense that we wanted to give. So at the end, the building not only fits perfectly in the context, but it has its own identity and its own architectural character. 7th Floor

ACADEMIC PROJECTS ITESM MEXICO CITY CAMPUS
BR-425
The project is located on the corner of two major roads in Mexico City, Periferico and Barrance del Muerto, conditions that make the building BR-425 have an excellent urban connection. After an analysis of the area, the program that was given to the building is mixed-use, where housing, hotel and commerce were the main functions that could enhance the architectural project. The architecture of the BR-425 generates a dialogue from the public space towards the urban entity. The design of this public space starts from the need to have areas isolated from daily noise pollution, so this space is designed under the ground level, changing the urban scale and providing a bigger comfort environment.
