Tulum is the only the archaeological site in Mexico that sits at the edge ofthe sea, it is the most photogenic place in the region and perhaps the entire country. It was a Mayan fortress called Zama originally, that lived its moments of glory at the end of the classic period (around 1000 AD). The most iconic of its structure, called “The Castle” is on the edge of a cliff from where the turquoise waters of the sea are appreciated, and whose function was to serve as the main temple, astronomy observatory and lighthouse.Another important buildings are the Temple of the Frescos, whose murals portrait a series of supernatural being living in the underworld which constitute one of the most important examples of preHispanic Mayan mural painting, and the Temple of the Descending God with a small basement where an edifice was built decorated with the image of that deity, principal iconographic element of the city . We´ll find also the Temple of the Wind God, a small structure that is in the part that borders the cliff overlooking the ocean is also distinguished. All this is part of a magical set that offers the best Caribbean views. Tulum es la única zona arqueológica en México que se asienta a la orilla del mar. Es el sitio más fotogénico de la región y quizá del país entero. Fue una fortaleza maya originariamente denominada Zama, que vivió sus momentos de gloria al final del período clásico (cerca del año 1000 d.C.). La más icónica de sus estructuras, llamada “El Castillo” se encuentra al borde de un acantilado desde donde se aprecian las aguas color turquesa del mar, y cuya función era servir como templo principal, observatorio astronómico y como faro de navegación. Otra de las edificaciones importantes son: el Templo de los Frescos, cuyas pinturas murales retratan a una serie de seres sobrenaturales residentes en el inframundo que constituyen uno de los más importantes testimonios de la pintura mural maya prehispánica, y el Templo del Dios Descendente con un pequeño basamento sobre el que se construyó un edificio decorado con la imagen de esa deidad, principal elemento iconográfico de la ciudad. También se distingue el Templo del Dios del Viento, una pequeña estructura que se encuentra en la parte que colinda con el acantilado que mira al océano. Experts on the Mayan culture divide their history into three periods: PreClassic Period (1850 B.C. - 250 A.D.); During this period were shaping the traits that give identity to what was the Mayan culture with influences from different cultures. Classic period (S. III A.D. - S. IX A.D.); The consolidation of culture came, reaching high development in politics, science and arts. Villages become cities. When you talk about Mayans, you refer to one of the most important pre Hispanic cultures in Mexican and American history, which is because they left scientific and astronomical heritage to the world. Contrary to widespread belief, the Mayan civilization never died, or at least not completely, as their descendants still live in the region and many of them speak any of the languages of the Mayan family, they keep some of the rituals and traditions of this ancient culture, surviving in the time and offering its knowledge to the visitor. XVI d.C.); Se desencadenan una serie de sucesos que dan como resultado el “colapso maya” que consiste en el cese de actividades políticas y culturales en los principales centros urbanos, de lo cual no se pudo reponer con la misma fuerza, hasta la colonización española de la Península. Hablar de los mayas es referirse a la historia de una de las culturas prehispánicas más importantes de la historia mexicana, y de todo el continente americano ya que su legado científico y astronómico es mundial. De forma contraria a la creencia generalizada, la civilización maya nunca se extinguió, o por lo menos no por completo, pues sus descendientes aún viven en la región y muchos de ellos hablan alguna de las lenguas de la familia mayense, manteniendo muchos de los ritos y costumbres de esta antigua civilización, sobreviviendo en el tiempo y ofreciendo su conocimiento al visitante. 3
The cenotes and caves systems of Tulum are formations that hide great secrets. Long time ago these caves were inhabited by different species, including humans who settled in the Yucatan Peninsula. During recent explorations of these cavities (now covered by water) the rests of "Eva of Naharon" were discovered, a 14,000 years old young lady, the oldest vestiges of human remains in the whole continent. Also were found other remains such as the famous "Woman of the Palms" (picture) of over than 10,000 years. These discoveries are so important that have made repropose all theories about the early settlers who ventured into the New World. If we want to discover all these secrets, even the places where the discoveries were made, we have to go to the Ice Age Museum in Tulum, located at Parque Dos Ojos, managed by the explorers themselves, with the support of the landowners of Ejido Jacinto Pat. You’ll see real size reconstructions of the discoveries and infographics that explain us the changes since that distant time to the present. Highly recommended activity for those who want to immerse in our ancestors history. ANCESTROS. Los cenotes y sistemas de cavernas de Tulum son formaciones que esconden grandes secretos. Hace mucho fueron cuevas habitadas por distintas especies, entre ellas los humanos que poblaron la Península de Yucatán. Durante exploraciones recientes de estas cavidades (hoy cubiertas por el agua) se han descubierto los restos de “la Eva de Naharon”, una joven con cerca de 14,000 mil años, el vestigio más antiguo de restos humanos en todo el Continente. También se han encontrado otros restos como la famosa “Mujer de las Palmas” (imagen), de más de 10.000 años. Estos descubrimientos son tan importantes que ha hecho replantear todas las teorías sobre los primeros pobladores que se aventuraron en el Nuevo Mundo. Si queremos descubrir todos estos secretos, e incluso los sitios dónde se hicieron estos descubrimientos, hemos de acudir al Museo de la Era del Hielo en Tulum, asentado en el Parque Dos Ojos, y dirigido por los propios exploradores, con el apoyo de los ejidatarios de Jacinto Pat. Podrás ver réplicas a tamaño real de los descubrimientos realizados e infografías que nos explican los cambios acontecidos desde aquella lejana época a la actualidad. Una actividad muy recomendable para quienes quieran sumergirse en la historia de los ancestros de nuestra civilización.

Additionally to its beautiful beaches, Tulum has natural attractions like the National Park of Tulum and Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, which are the closest protected jungle areas to the city. In the surroundings you can find cenotes, mangroves and lagoons. In front of the coast there is the second biggest reef of the world. Its sylvatic ecosystem allows great variety and diversity of vegetation whose flora is constituted mainly by trees such as: chechen, sapote, mahogany, cedar, chacah, red and white mangrove, among others. It’s fauna is even more extensive, very rich in marine and jungle species like: jaguar, ocelot, whitetail deer, collared peccary, coati, anteater, toucan, opossum, turtle, white herons, hummingbirds, gray fox, bat, armadillo, among others. We recommend snorkeling at the reef; take tours to the protected areas and bird watching as well, to enjoy the natural beauties waiting for you. NATURALEZA. Además de sus bellas playas, Tulum tiene atractivos como el Parque Nacional Tulum y la Reserva de la Biósfera Sian Ka'an, las cuales son áreas de jungla protegidas más cercanas a la ciudad. En los alrededores puedes encontrar cenotes, manglares y lagunas. Frente a la costa se encuentra el segundo arrecife más grande de todo el mundo. Su ecosistema selvático permite gran variedad y diversidad de vegetación cuya flora está constituida principalmente por árboles como: chechén, zapote, caoba, cedro, chacah, mangle rojo y blanco, entre otros. La fauna es aún más extensa, llena de gran riqueza de especies marinas y de jungla como: jaguar, ocelote, venado cola blanca, pecarí de collar, coatí, oso hormiguero, tucán, tlacuache, tortuga, garzas blancas, colibríes, zorra gris, murciélago, armadillo, entre otras. Te recomendamos snorkelear en el arrecife, tomar tours a las áreas protegidas así como el avistamiento de aves, para que disfrutes las bellezas naturales que te esperan.

The floor of the Yucatan peninsula is composed mostly of limestone, which is highly permeable, allowing the formation of underground rivers throughout the country and forming freshwater reservoirs known as cenotes. There are three types: open, semi-open and underground. The word cenote comes from the Mayan “dzonot”, which means cave with water. During pre-Hispanic times, many of these cenotes were used as ceremonial and offering centers. Currently they have a recreational and ecotourism use. Parque Dos Ojos is a flooded cave system located north of Tulum. Flora and fauna are abundant in the park, the road that leads to the clear waters is accompanied at all times by delicate and rhythmic butterflies. Dos Ojos invites you to refresh yourself in the wonderful waters and swim with the amazing play of light and colors that are created here. They have several Cenotes for various activities such as swimming, diving, zip or simply enjoy the tranquility of the area and admire the scenery. Also visit the First Museum of the Ice Age in Quintana Roo. CENOTES. El suelo de la península yucateca es en su mayoría de roca calcárea, la cual es sumamente permeable, permitiendo la formación de ríos subterráneos en todo el territorio y formando grandes depósitos de agua dulce acumulada conocidos como cenotes. Existen tres tipos: a cielo abierto, semiabierto y subterráneo. La palabra cenote proviene del maya “dzonot”, que quiere decir caverna con agua. Durante la época prehispánica, muchos de estos cenotes eran usados como centros ceremoniales y de ofrenda. Actualmente es de uso recreativo y ecoturístico. Parque Dos Ojos es un sistema de cuevas inundado ubicado al norte de Tulum. Flora y fauna son abundantes en el parque, el camino que guía hasta las cristalinas aguas está acompañado todo el tiempo por delicadas y rítmicas mariposas. Dos Ojos te invita a refrescarte en sus maravillosas aguas y nadar entre el sorprendente juego de luces y colores que se crean aquí. Cuentan con varios Cenotes para diversas actividades como nado, buceo, tirolesa o simplemente disfrutar de la tranquilidad del área y admirar el paisaje. This little town is located at Sian Ka’an Biosphere heart, a UNESCO protected area. This allowed that the region remained almost untouched since its foundation, little over 50 years ago, as a fishermen village. The conditions not even allow traditional electric network, hence electricity is mainly generated by solar and air energies. Which means, “Turtle nest” in Mayan language; is a small town founded in 1958, located at the Riviera Maya between Playa del Carmen (37 km distance) and Tulum, Quintana Roo. Historically this place was the first tourist destination of Yucatan Peninsula at the caribbean coast. , Open the heavens doors Sian Ka’an (place where the heaven born in maya) is a biosphere reserve, the largest protected area at the Mexican Caribbean. It has an area of 969 thousands hectares between Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto municipalities. In 1986 was established and became part of the program “The Man and the Biosphere” by UNESCO, in 1987 was declared World Heritage by the same organization. The reserve has different ecosystems including low and medium jungles, savannas, a portion of the second longest Barrier Reef in the world and 23 small registered archaeological sites. Sian Ka’an hosts 103 species of mammals and 336 species of birds including a large number of migratory birds and has more than 1,200 species of vascular plants, its beaches are important breeding areas for sea turtles, its wetlands are home for manatees and two species of endangered crocodiles. Ocupa un área aproximada de 969 mil hectáreas entre los municipios de Tulum y Felipe Carrillo Puerto, se estableció en 1986 y se volvió parte del programa “El hombre en la biosfera” de la UNESCO. Un año más tarde, en 1987 fue declarada por la UNESCO como Patrimonio de la Humanidad. La reserva cuenta con diferentes ecosistemas entre ellos, selvas bajas y medianas, sabanas y petenes, así como una porción de la segunda barrera de arrecifes mas larga del mundo, además de 23 pequeñas zonas arqueológicas registradas. Sian Ka’an alberga 103 especies de mamíferos y 336 especies de aves entre ellas un gran número de especies migratorias, posee más de 1.200 especies de plantas vasculares, además sus playas son áreas muy importantes de reproducción para las tortugas marinas, sus humedales son hogar de manatíes y dos especies de cocodrilos en peligro de extinción. Pottery, the sacred art of the four elements. Water and earth make the clay, air dries it and fire purifies it in the kiln. In the beginning was a ritual and ceremonial art creating objects such as copaleras, incensaries, bowls for offerings and deity's figures. It was also used to transmit historical and cultural information. In consecuence, during the Spanish conquest it was forbidden and most of the creations destroyed. Despite this fact many mayor pieces of Prehispanic Mayan Pottery were found in the Peninsula of Yucatan and surroundings, through which we can learn more about this wonderful culture. The workshop "Yuuk K'at" dedicated to the teaching and reconstitution of the original techniques in the Maya area for over ten years, as well as the teaching of contemporary ceramics and various techniques in Tulum and Riviera Maya. When visiting the shop you'll find mayan pottery, archaeological replicas, pottery wheel, oriental style pieces and a variety of local art. Cerámica, el arte sagrado de los cuatro elementos. Agua y tierra forman el barro, el aire lo seca y el fuego lo purifica durante la cocción. En sus orígenes se utilizaba como un arte ritual y ceremonial creando objetos tales como copaleras, incensarios, cuencos de ofrendas y figuras de divinidades. De esta manera, la cerámica también era utilizada como método de transmisión de información y cultura. Como consecuencia, durante la época de la conquista se prohibió el hacer y la mayoría de las piezas fueron destruidas. Sin embargo se han encontrado grandes obras de cerámica prehispánica maya en la península de Yucatán y sus alrededores, a través de las cuales podemos conocer un poco más sobre esta maravillosa cultura. El taller "Yuuk K'at" esta dedicado a la enseñanza y reconstitución de las técnicas originarias en las comunidades desde hace mas de diez años, asi como también a la enseñanza de cerámica contemporánea y técnicas variadas en Tulum y Riviera Maya. Al visitar el taller encontrarás cerámica maya, réplicas arqueológicas, alfarería en torno, piezas de estilo oriental y una gran variedad de arte de las comunidades.
