“

Mom, we can’t go shopping. We forgot the bags!” I hear as I pull into the Save On parking lot. Frustrated as I am tight for time, I take a deep breath and drive back onto 2nd Ave. “You’re right, let’s go grab them.”

We cruise along, and I catch a glimpse of her happy face as she sings, “it’s tricky to rock a rhyme” (her current fave) and I am in awe. This little five-year-old has an awareness for the environment that took me nearly thirty years to gain. Paper straws and hydro flasks. Sorting recycling and colouring on both sides of paper. A love for trees and clean water. An annoyance with plastic. “Why did they make it, anyway?”

She keeps us in line, not only by reminding us when we are lazy or forgetful but by her mere existence. She inherits what we leave behind, as do her children if she so chooses. It makes us work harder to be and do better, to understand and arm ourselves with knowledge, to protect where we live and what we love, to voice our concerns in confidence.

Our eyes catch in the rearview mirror as we sing “to rock a rhyme that’s right on time,” and my heart almost bursts. I know I’m doing my part to keep that smile on that wee, special face. And it’s so so worth it, even if it can be a bit tricky.

A Class Project to Reduce Plastic

M

s. Shully’s Grade 3/4 Class, at Isabella Dicken Elementary School, has been working hard for the past few months hand-sewing reusable produce bags to sell to community members. Their goal is to reduce plastic waste one plastic bag at a time, starting with produce bags at the grocery store. They have been extremely passionate and dedicated through the whole process showing that they care for our environment and want to make a difference.

We went to visit the class and asked them a few questions about this exciting project.

How did you come up with the idea for the project?

We heard a story on CBC that our plastic does not always get recycled properly. So we brainstormed ideas on how we could use less plastic in the grocery store in order to reduce our plastic usage.

What has been the most surprising part of this process?

How relaxing sewing is. - Nova That I actually like sewing! - Kaden That we are able to help with recycling and the environment. - Marley and Kennedy That we were actually able to follow through with our idea and not just talk about it. - Brett What do you hope the outcome is in our community?

For the whole earth to be clean and healthy.

- Lauren I wish that when I’m an adult and I take a swim, the sea animals will be safe and there is no such thing as the Pacific Garbage Patch. - Winter I wish that when I go for a walk or take a swim that all of the streets and water is clear.

On April 18, from 6-8 pm, at the Spring Fling dance at IDES. Each bag will cost $2.

The money will go towards buying fabric to make new bags OR to an environmental charity decided on by the class.

ave on Foods has adopted a zero-waste initiative and with that is excited about its partnership with the Fernie Fresh Food Share and The Salvation Army. “As a food retailer, our goal is to feed people, not landfills.” Fernie Fresh Food Share now picks up from Save On Foods five days per week, from all departments, making it possible for the store to operate with a zero waste target.

Fernie Fresh Food Share is a food recovery program that takes food SUBMITTED PHOTO from local restaurants and grocery stores that can no longer be sold but still fit for human consumption. The food then gets taken to the Salvation Army food bank where it is sorted, weighed and put out for distribution. Save On would like to thank its team in the store; they have come up with some great solutions to help get them to zero waste.

Employer Health Tax

N

ew for 2019 is the Employer Health Tax. This new payroll tax replaces the Medical Service Plan that is currently in place. The monthly Medical Services Plan payments continue to be charged throughout 2019 but are eliminated January 1, 2020.

The lost revenue will be replaced with a payroll tax. Employers with payroll costs of less than $500,000 per year are exempt.

Employers with payroll costs of between $500,000 and $1,500,000 pay 2.95% on their annual payroll in excess of $500,000.

Employers with payroll costs of more than $1,500,000 pay 1.95% of their annual payroll costs with no exemption. Charitable or Non-Profit employers, with payroll costs of less than $1,500,000 are exempt.

Employers in BC with an annual payroll over $500,000 must register for an employer health tax account by May 15, 2019. To register you need to use eTaxBC at etax. gov.bc.ca/btp/eservices. On this page, under the heading “Register – Apply for a new account,” select “Employer Health Tax.” The process to register should take ten to twenty minutes. To register you will need your federal business number, mailing address, physical location and your incorporation number and incorporation date if your business is incorporated. Once you have registered for the Employer Health Tax you need to enrol for access to eTaxBC or add access to your existing eTaxBC account.

The first Employer Heath Tax return is due March 31, 2020, for the calendar year 2019. For subsequent years, March 31 of the following year will be the due date to file your Employer Heath Tax return.

Instalment payments are required if your Employer Health Tax exceeds $2,925 in the prior year. For 2019 instalment calculations, you are deemed to have owed Employer Health Tax based on 2018 payroll. The instalments are due June 15, September

15 and December 15 and are calculated as 25% of the previous year’s tax or 25% of the current year’s estimated tax. If your estimated tax remittance ends up being too low, you will be charged interest on the shortfall. The balance of the Employer Health Tax is paid with the annual filing of the health tax return which is due March 31 of the subsequent year.

The instalment payments, as well as the payment due on filing the return, can be paid online using eTaxBC or through your financial institution using electronic funds transfer, bill payment service or wire transfer. The payee name for financial institution bill payment services will be a variation of BC – EMPLOYER HEALTH TAX. The instalment base of $2,925 equates to payroll in the prior year exceeding $599,152 ((599,152 – 500,000) x 2.95%).

If your annual payroll exceeds $599,152 you will need to pay instalments. The first instalment is due June 15, 2019, which is fast approaching.

If you have associated employers, the $500,00 exemption is shared. For example,

you own company A with a payroll of $200,000 and company B with a payroll of $400,000. Each company separately is under the $500,000 exemption. Combined, both companies have a payroll of $600,000 which exceeds the exempt $500,000 amount. There is $100,000 of Employer Health Tax that must be paid. Associated employers must enter into an agreement to share the $500,000 exemption if applicable.

The Employment Health Tax is charged on remuneration for employees paid in British Columbia. Where an employee is also an owner, their wages and bonuses and like remuneration are subject to Employment Health Tax but dividends they receive are not subject to the Employment Health Tax. Payments to independent contractors are not subject to Employment Health Tax. It is a question of fact as to whether an independent contractor is actually an employee.You need to be confident that your contractors are not actually employees.

Arts and Entertainment

FEATURE ARTIST

J O C E LY N M U D R Y Working mainly with wood I focus on the connection between design, nature, form and function. I believe that art should be a part of our everyday, fluid with our daily interactions, whether it be something we look at or use. This translates into my interest in creating spaces, whether it’s within the frame of a picture, building furniture or sculptural objects.

I was lucky to grow up in an artistic household. All grandparents involved in

photography or painting and my parents surrounded me with music, theatre and art.

Going to do a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Victoria made sense.

My main focus during school was photography. I would build spaces, costumes and props using different mediums, including wire, textiles and wood to create worlds within my photos. What began as a supplement to my photography has now become the focus of my creative language.

I love the idea of my work being kinetic. If it’s not a usable object like my lamps, it’s one of my hangings that moves and changes when you pass by. Connected to you and your life.

Frank Lloyd Wright is one of my favourite architects because of his understanding of how everything works together in a constructed environment including the preexisting environment as well as the plants, rugs, flow of the space, and materials used.

Form and function become one in design and execution of the nature of materials and method and purpose are all in unison.”

We are part of the earth and the earth is us. My understanding and respect for it are integral to my process, designs, material and values. Living in Fernie allows all my beliefs and influences to be together in one place.

My current show, Touch Stones at the Arts Station follows these same themes.

Inspiration for the work also comes from the philosophies of Mark Rothko, the painter. He believed in expressing emotions as a connection to the divine. Most of my work is influenced by the landscapes I have surrounded myself in, mainly the Rocky Mountains. Within these landscapes and experiences, nature has always been my greatest understanding of the divine and has always enveloped me in overwhelming emotion. I hope for my work not to recreate these experiences but for them to become an experience of their own for the viewer. And create a space where there is a kinship between art, design, whimsy, wilderness, and daily experience.

The Fernie art community is a great place to explore one’s practice. I’m part of the Art Co-op on main street and everyone there is encouraging and a great resource for feedback and constructive conversations with other artists.

I hope for my work to evolve into largerscale pieces. Doing more work on a commercial level including designing whole spaces. I’m interested in all ideas of light and space, architectural and interior design.

ARTBEAT

All Kinds of Green

W

hen someone asks me if my studio is ‘green,’ what they probably are asking is whether or not I’m keeping the environment in mind as I develop my process. My first instinct, however, is to respond ‘do you mean Emerald Green, Forest Green, or perhaps more of a Pistachio?’

Green was first used as a pigment by the Egyptians, after which it became a popular choice for the cultures of antiquity because of its positive associations with the living world. Throughout history, we can find green used as a symbol of birth, regeneration, growth, and life. Our word green grew out of the Old English grene which shares Germanic roots with words like grow and grass. In French, vert comes from the Latin viridis meaning to sprout.

As our knowledge of chemistry progressed, the pigments available to artists have blossomed into a dizzying array of hues like aquamarine, British racing green, chartreuse, verdigris and the scandalous sounding hooker’s green. Kelly green hearkens to Ireland in all her lushness, and one can’t help but feel a little hungry when painting with apple, lime, avocado, and mint green.

It is interesting to note that the idea of these varied colours is largely cultural. The Chinese symbol for green, for instance, is the same as the one for blue. There are cultures in the world that have no specific words for either green or blue, and at least one culture that doesn’t appear to have a word for colour at all, despite the fact that the people themselves enjoy making bright red pigments for face paint and use colourful feathers as earrings. It seems colours can be enjoyed even without linguistic clarity.

When I sit down at my easel to paint, it’s hard sometimes to know if it’s best to go with the permanent bright green or the

viridian hue. Personally, I can’t handle the jewel tones at full strength, so I’m always mixing in white for opacity and a drop of black or red to remove some energy. All these colour choices taken individually are small ones, but they grow to be very important as the picture emerges. Olivine carries a different subtext than permanent bright green. Do I want to paint a fogbound conifer or a freshly-sprouted fern?

Making the correct selection contributes to a cohesive feeling in the finished piece.

It’s exciting and important that our culture has grown this rich language of colour. It’s a signal that we are seeing, and understanding the microcosms around us and giving them nuanced names. It’s a symbol of growth in our collective psyche.

On a somewhat larger scale, when I picture how I want our world to look in a hundred years, I still want artists to be able to know first-hand the distinction between moss green and sea green. I want them to look out their windows and be inspired by the incredible diversity of colour on display in nature. I hope that when a landscape

painter puts together their palette it’s not all desert brown and concrete grey.

Lately, I’ve found it difficult to feel optimistic about the future. I’ve been thinking about ways I can make an impact, and I realize that the only practical steps I can take are the small ones: use the car less, sort my recycling carefully, teach my kids about nature, bring my own bags to the grocery store, and try to live simply, for starters. We are truly rich in this part of the world, most of us don’t truly understand ‘need.’ Now it’s time for me (for all of us!) to do more than paint with green pigment and to get better at being green. Once we start seeing those little ways we can contribute, it will add up to a bright, green future. Like the artist’s decision to use olive green instead of sap green, the effect is subtle but critical.

Let’s make sure the painters of the future have a landscape to paint, and a choice of many greens in their palette. These actions are small, but they could be the difference between muddy mess and masterpiece.

Dreaming in Colour

Terry Nelson is a name I heard a lot when I first moved to Fernie. It seemed like this guy was everywhere! When I finally met the legend himself, we were volunteering together, showing me exactly the type of guy he is; a real influencer in his community. I am now fortunate enough to call him a friend and as I rushed to Polar Peek books to pick up his latest passion project, Fernie Area Hiking Trails and Natural Plant Compendium, I couldn’t help but think, now here’s a guy who knows the lay of the land and loves it unapologetically. It only made sense to collaborate on our annual green issue with Terry.

He indulged me as I created a “fill-in-the-blanks” style poem for us to create together. I thought the playfulness of it would whet his appetite and surely he could take a short break from his outdoor adventuring and book hawking to oblige me? As usual, Terry did not disappoint. Thanks, Terry! Enjoy.

Christine

Christine tells the tale of Christine Chubbuck, a reporter for WXLT, a small Florida television station, who on July 15, 1974, shot herself on live TV, just a month before her 30th birthday. Chubbuck suffered from bipolar disorder which was not generally recognized by the psychiatric community at the time of her death. Given how grisly the events were around her death and how fascinating she was as a person, it makes sense that someone wanted to further investigate the circumstances of her death through the medium of film.

Chubbuck was born in Hudson, Ohio, the daughter of Margaretha and George Fairbank-Chubbuck. While growing up, she spoke to her family about her struggles with depression and suicidal tendencies, though she did not inform them of her intention to make a final suicide attempt.

She had already attempted an overdose of drugs in 1970. She had also been seeing a psychiatrist for several weeks before her death. Chubbuck’s mother chose not to tell the television station about her daughter’s suicidal tendencies because she feared that Christine would be fired as a result.

volunteering at a local hospital giving puppet shows to children with intellectual disabilities. She also occasionally incorporated homemade puppets into her talk show on WXLT. Hall has had an active film career and appeared with Andy Serkis and Hugh Jackman in The Prestige (2006), as well as with Toby Jones, Kevin Bacon and Oliver Platt in Frost/Nixon (2008). In 2011 she appeared in The Town with Jeremy Renner.

Also appearing in Christine is Michael C. Hall, perhaps most famous for playing the charismatic psycho Dexter on the Showtime series of the same name. He

plays George, a handsome news anchor upon whom Christine has a crush. Tracy Letts who plays Michael, the put-upon manager of the station, is best known as a playwright, having written the play on which the situation comedy Superior Doughnuts is based. He also wrote Killer Joe and August Osage County, which was turned into a movie starring Julia Roberts and Merrill Streep.

Christine is also a meditation on being a woman in the 1970s and the cultural expectations surrounding femininity at that time. Christine’s main concern throughout the film is getting married and having children; goals which both her psychiatric condition and the people around her made very difficult to achieve. Hall successfully portrays her as an awkward teenager in a young woman’s body. The audience feels her pain, but at the same time is frustrated by her inability to relate to her peers.

This movie is definitely worth a look. Two thumbs up!

The director of Christine is Antonio Campos, the executive producer of the current Netflix series The Sinner, a police procedural about a murder that sent shock waves through a small town. He also directed Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011), the story of a young woman involved with a cult. Investigating Chubbuck’s death seems right up Campos’ alley.

Christine is a wonderful movie that is both dark and sad. Rebecca Hall, who plays Chubbuck, manages to portray her as intelligent, but socially isolated from her peers and awkward in her interpersonal interactions. Although brusque in her dealings with other people, she was also very compassionate. The movie shows her FERNIEFIX.COM

Eddie Petryshen

T

his February, a public forum on logging was held by Wildsight at the Best Western Fernie Mountain Lodge and was very well-attended, given the current and sensitive nature of the subject in our Valley. I was impressed with the extent of knowledge Wildsight representative Eddie Petryshen presented to the crowded room, and at how his passion for our landscapes and ecosystems couldn’t help but shine through the at times devastating information and imagery. Just how does someone of such a young age develop this level of devotion for the environment?

Eddie grew up in Bull River, “the townsite adjacent to the pub” he tells me at my somewhat confused look. “I went to school in Cranbrook.” I was intrigued with how his family settled there, and he shared that his dad met his mom while she was on a family trip in Jaffray. “My Gran owned the mid-way cabins at Sand Creek. I’m a real local yokel,” he laughs.

After high school, Eddie spent some time playing basketball in Atlanta, Georgia and in Switzerland. “It made me realise I could not do it as a career, but it was cool to experience different cultures.”

Especially in Switzerland, where he has relatives. Afterwards, he went to school in Vancouver to study Geography, planning on Law as the end-goal. Three years in, Eddie was home for the summer working for Wildsight. He and his brother decided to go for a hike up Fisher Peak, which resulted in a complete change in trajectory.

“It was early May, and there was a lot of snow on Fisher. I fell through some snow, into a sharp rock that went into my leg. I could see my bone. We called Search and Rescue, and ended up having to spend the night before the long-line rescue,” he recalls. “I lost a lot of blood, it was 8am and I was delirious looking around at the Southern Rockies. I was like, ‘I want to do

something for this landscape.’ That was the moment for me, the transition.”

Eddie began working full time with Wildsight, “I started to learn a lot more from the experience in the field, learning from people who have been doing this their whole lives.” He recognised that he has always had a close connection with this land, with a dad who was a forester, raised adjacent to guide outfitters, “it was always around me.” Eddie has now been working for Wildsight for nearly four years, spending a lot of time engaging with forestry companies to preserve wildlife habitat, protect water and various species, “mitigating impacts across the Columbia Basin, with a focus from the US border up to Golden.”

Since his time with Wildsight, Eddie has noticed a bit of a shift. “People are more aware in certain circumstances, but there is also a disconnect from the land and their actions. People want more, but

there is less to work with,” he says. “It’s interesting in the Elk Valley, there is a lot of industries operating on this landscape.”

While there is no easy answer, Eddie’s objective is to sustain the good diversity we have here. Much of which cannot be found elsewhere. “In a more ideal sense, we need to protect some of the rarity and the ecosystems… the connectivity, water and wildlife. We need healthy wildlife populations to sustain our lifestyle and all of those things.”

In regards to logging on private land, there is momentum and support from the communities of BC to change regulations.

“There’s definitely a lot of support for conservation, which is something that has changed for sure.” As residents left the forum, they were provided with details on who to contact in regards to changing logging regulations on private land. Outside of working to preserve our landscapes and all that comes along with it, Eddie is not surprisingly into “big” human-powered adventures. “I like to go places that are still wild. Spending time in them, getting to know the landscape intimately and having a connection with it, whether it be backcountry skiing, running or hiking. It’s what drives me.”

It is clear to see how Eddie has developed into a steward of our environment, and will likely continue with this devotion for his lifetime. And for that, we are grateful.

1. When did you first arrive in the Valley and what brought you here?

I was born here, so birth brought me here. But after high school and University coming back, it was a connection to place and wildness and all of those values that I grew up with that you get reminded of later on that are critical. I never wanted to live in a city, but I didn’t know that at 19 years old.You figure out what you value.

2. Who did you first meet when you returned?

An influential person was John Bergenske who devoted his life to wildlife and wild places in the Basin and that perspective really resonated with me - it altered my thinking of what’s important.

5. Do you have a favourite memory or pastime that connects with this area?

I hope there is a plan to get wildlife across the highway and rail… that’s a long term vision. Five years is a short time frame!

We did a really amazing traverse in the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy. Ten days, north to south…just having the opportunity to still do that, just you and the landscape that has been unchanged since colonisation. We are pretty lucky to have that.

8. How do you start your day or what is one of your daily rituals?

I feel like I’m very predictable… but I do like jazz music.

Oh winter. Fresh snowfall. Skinning through some old growth interior cedar hemlock. That’s pretty prime.

I hope we’ve started to address some of the issues from communal effects on the landscape. I hope we have a few more conservation areas… areas that protect the values of what we want to see in this valley.

There is an author who grew up learning traditional Anuk ways in western Alaska… his goal as a writer was to tell the stories of the people, the animals and the landscape of the place he loves. To me that really resonates.

3. Do you remember your first general impression of this area?

I remember growing up we used to build gigantic tree forts, 60 feet high on Fir and Ponderosa Pine. Beautiful grassland ecosystems, river bottom, fishing the Bull River. The incredible bull trout and clean water. All of it is part of my first impression.

4. What keeps you here?

Just connection. The wild places and all the opportunities to preserve what we have left. To really set a precedent on how we deal with communities right next to wild places, which is really present in the Elk Valley. We’re at the forefront of how we deal with these issues.

Local Government Associations

L

ocal Government Associations are a powerful vehicle for local governments around the world. We see local government associations everywhere - in South Africa, Sweden, Australia and of course here in British Columbia.

In fact, one of my first conferences as a newly elected Councillor was at our Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Government Association. I saw a bright enthusiastic board working hard to deliver a meaningful conference, stick handle some advocacy pieces and run the Annual General Meeting.

I was instantly struck with the desire to be a part of the board. I have always been drawn to the bright lights in local government and I can assure you, the bright lights are working on external boards on our behalf to bring value back to the region.

A local government association holds the election of board members at the AGM, and I enthusiastically put my hand up to run ‘from the floor.’ The election is by the membership, and I was very pleased to be awarded a seat, and then be re-elected two years later. I have enjoyed four years as a Director with the AKBLG, and they have been unbelievably valuable.

The number of Local Government Associations (LGAs) around the world continues to grow, and the functions they deliver have expanded. Core functions of LGAs include; being an important place for the exchange of ideas, collaboration and professional development. Local Government Associations lobby and campaign for changes in policy and legislation, and through design, one of our goals is to build capacity in our region.

In the past four years, in addition to hosting our Annual General Meeting, we have provided two mid-year workshops to take a deeper dive on emerging issues.

The first workshop we delivered was called, Aging in the Kootenays: Exploring Impacts and Opportunities. This was an opportunity to explore the Kootenay-Boundary’s aging population and learn about tools available to help seniors age in place.

The second workshop was, Healthier and Wealthier Through Food, a skate through regional food councils, sustainable food systems and the regionalization of agrifood systems.

Like a moth, I continue to be attracted to the bright lights in local government.

Serving on an external board is both incredibly rewarding and a lot of extra work, but the value coming back to our region, as a result, is very important.

At the moment, the Kootenays are well represented on a variety of external boards and I am thankful for the time commitment of these local leaders.

Certainly, my four years on the AKBLG

board have been the highlight of my time in local government.

Collaborating for a Greener Future

here are a lot of reasons to work for a ‘greener’ world, but most parents would agree the number one motivation is their children. We want our offspring and other descendants to enjoy lush forests, homes that are safe from wildfire, as well as health and prosperity beyond our own.

No mom or dad is truly content with the idea that his or her kids might have less opportunity than previous generations. So it is heartbreaking to admit that polar ice caps are melting and aquifers are emptying and that the forecast for humanity isn’t all rosy. Worst of all is reckoning with the fact that most of the dangerous changes to our planet and atmosphere have been caused by people. Oops! Sorry about that kiddos!

As bleak as this picture might look, it’s important to acknowledge reality. While nobody wants to say to their teenager, “we used up all the topsoil, too bad there’s none left for you,” it’s my experience that teens already know what they are up against. If we can be honest with young people, and accept the necessity of stepping into this new wilderness, they will actually help lead the way.

Teenagers are often truth tellers. They say what they want and react without pretense.

They are not invested in narratives adults tell each other about what’s relevant.

Grown-ups tend to be a little confused about what actually matters, and can become preoccupied with things like vacations and renovations.Young people are a lot clearer about the fact that connection, play, and trust, along with the biological basics like clean air, are the things we need to focus on.

Teenagers may lack information and experience due to their limited time on earth, but they are closer to their humanity than most adults and inclined to have their

priorities straight.Young people also have a keen sense of justice, and will quickly tell you when they feel they are being treated unfairly. Teens understand that bank accounts and jobs are no longer paramount when the river is poisoned with selenium and the fish are gone.

Other humans are our greatest source of knowledge and inspiration. If I suddenly notice a lack of elk on my property, I’m going to ask folks around me if they’ve also noticed it and what they think it means.

It’s pretty normal to gather opinions, do some research, and then make informed decisions. We should include young people in these processes too.Young people can be a source of moral principles, creative ideas, and optimism. I’m not saying they are the only source; I’m saying that we can use these strengths that many teenagers have and work more closely together across generations.

How many times have you set a limit with your teen, heard “that’s not fair” come from their mouths, and then responded with “life isn’t fair?” It’s common to attempt to explain injustice by telling them it just happens and it’s normal. But is this a helpful thing to say? By announcing

that life isn’t fair we could be dismissing teen’s legitimate concerns. We could be communicating that we are powerless over inequities and discrimination. Do we want our children to get the message that we are all incapable of making things fairer?

Environmental destruction and climate change will have a far greater impact on children alive today and those yet to be born than any of us adults. We need to not only involve young people in analysis of the issues and searching for solutions but in some cases follow their lead. It doesn’t make sense to devise policies that will affect future generations without taking into account the perceptions and values of those who will be alive the longest.

Collaborating with young people in such a meaningful way can go against our common sense. Most of us were raised with adults dominating decision-making and in homes where children weren’t valued for our ideas. It can make us feel uncomfortable to let kids choose to join Meatless Mondays or allow them the freedom to participate in a school strike for climate action. But their lives are at stake and they can’t even vote. We need to have their backs.

Honour Thy Mother

I

take my mom for granted. I’m not proud of it. She lives nearby and I see her often.

I call her every time I need the turkey stuffing recipe. I should write it down.

Treat it like the precious piece of her that it is. An ounce of her age-old wisdom that’s been ripened and perfected through time and experience. That recipe, like everything she graciously provides for me, should be respected. Protected. (Seriously, that stuffing is fantastic.) But I don’t. I pluck the information from her brain, stirring in the cranberries and spoonful of warm potato water with the phone crammed uncomfortably between my cheek and neck, then hastily say thanks and move on to the next thing. I don’t give it another thought until the following Christmas.

Because when that time comes, I’ll call her and she’ll pick up the phone and tell me the whole thing, step by integral step, all over again. Until she isn’t there anymore. But I don’t want to think about that. It’s painful and confusing and makes my stomach clench with dread. I can’t make my brain comprehend this real and eventual conclusion. So, I don’t. I move on to the next thing. And the next.

You would think that the very root of our existence, the provider of all that nourishes and soothes us, would be forefront in our awareness. Our gratefulness. Always.You’d think we’d regularly drop to our knees and praise this unconditionally generous source of all we truly need. Hold her up with great esteem. But, unfortunately, we’re not wired that way. We tend to get used to things. Expect that they will always be there. Be wildly shocked if one day – they aren’t. I see it in my own children.

They’ve quickly grown accustomed to their expectations of my role in their lives.

They have no doubt that they will be provided with all the necessities of life. An abundance of healthy food and clean water

and almost everything their little hearts desire. If they don’t like what’s for dinner, there’s something else in the pantry. Always more. They become distracted and often leave a wake of destruction. Messes from crafts and snacks and abandoned ideas. I clean it up. We’re working on that.

As a collective, there is another mother we’re taking for granted. She’s just as precious and finite and our expectations of her are unrealistic and sometimes even cruel. To be honest, I think she’s getting a little fed up with us. Over the past century, we’ve disrespected and harmed her to a point of no return. If we continue to disregard her worsening state, driving her to eventual ruin, there will be nothing. But we don’t want to think about that. Not really. It’s confusing. Uncomfortable. So, we move on to the next thing. And the next.

Just like our mothers that present in a human form, Mother Earth has been incredibly patient with us. She’s forgiven our selfishness and greed. The immature phases we’re stubbornly travelling through on a road that will hopefully lead to wisdom. I’ve never doubted my love for

my mom. But I will admit I haven’t always walked the talk. Looking back on my teenage years, my treatment of her didn’t always reflect my heart. I would gobble the dinner she worked hard to prepare, pushing aside leftovers or scraping them into the garbage. There would be more when I needed it. When I was hungry again. There would be more.

I think it’s time to get on our knees and literally kiss the ground we’re walking on.

It’s time to honour our mother. Before it’s too late. Before all her wisdom and bounty are destroyed, and the recipes for everything sacred and nourishing are lost. Our ancestors knew better. Ancient earth dwellers, more connected to nature for their survival, often celebrated and worshipped her. Like small children, they knew their very existence depended on her generosity. Now we seek independence.

Rebellious teenagers obsessed with bigger and better. More. Fast cars and faster internet. We’ve forgotten how comforting it is to be in our mom’s presence. Breathe and listen and take in everything she has to offer us. What will we do when we call, and she doesn’t answer?

pring is in the air and it’s a great time to get back outside if you have been hibernating this winter. If you are just getting back into the swing of things it’s a good time to sharpen up your skills.

You may be feeling a little “green” as you hop on the bike early season. So let’s head over to the Fernie Dirt Jump Park located adjacent to the Fernie Aquatic Centre to dial in your skills.You can have a ton of fun here hitting the skinnies, pump track, and jumps if you are so inclined. There is also a great practice loop where you can work on negotiating switchbacks and moving through the trees.

Once you feel back on your game, take an easy stroll down the Coal Creek Heritage Trail on a fairly level grade, with a few minor climbs. This can be done as an out and back going as far as you feel up for on the day.

Sticking to the road during this time, over trails, is recommended.

If the trails are still wet, other options are available! Many get their legs ready by spinning from town, along Cokato Road until it meets Morrissey, then returning home. While biking on roads, beware of logging trucks and other traffic. If you want a bigger ride, consider riding to Elko! Some even take it to the next level by riding the Mount Broadwood loop in Elko, before returning home. Alternatively, take the quick drive from Fernie to Elko (20 minutes), turning left just after the Hill Top gas station, following the road down to the bridge across the river. There is a wee parking area to the left on the hill before crossing the bridge, or near the gate on the right side. After you are geared up, take the gravel road which climbs up to the Wigwam Flats. Once there, you can continue on to the Lodgepole Road to complete the Mount Broadwood loop, or for a quicker ride do an out and back to the Flats. Please note, this is a multi-use area. The gate blocks the road for most of

Movement is Medicine

itting down to write this column, I strategically place myself directly in front of my living room window allowing the sun to beam down on me. I close my eyes, feeling the warmth against my body and am teleported to a beach in Mexico, sipping a cold beer without a care in the world. News flash- it’s -18 and snowing, I’m sitting on the living room floor because I currently don’t own furniture, and the beer beside me is carbonated water as I’m seven months pregnant. A girl can dream, right?

If you ask me, it’s incredible what a little fresh air and Vitamin D can do for a person.

Anyone else notice an increase in energy or desire to get outside when the sun pops out? Yes, it’s currently -18, but it’s sunny, let’s go for a walk.

As I head out the door I check my Fitbit to see where my daily step count is at. 6,000 down. Only 4,000 to go. Walking along the river I’m in awe of the scenery. Snow covered mountain peaks, water flowing through small pockets on the river, the smell and simplicity. As I breathe in the crisp clean air I’m certain there is some sort of scientific research on the benefits.

Wow, hold on - this is coming from a girl who craves summer, who counts down the days to when she can pull out her Birks for another glorious season. Who am I? Am I actually enjoying Winter?

In October I set a goal to walk 10,000 steps/day outside. It’s now March and I feel well mentally, physically and financially.

You’d be shocked at how much a person can save on fuel when walking becomes the priority. Like yoga, walking outdoors has become my source of moving meditation.

It allows me to become present, grounded, and calm. I won’t lie, there are days I choose to stay inside, drink coffee and

consume numerous cinnamon buns. It’s also not always easy convincing a three-year-old to suit up and head out for a chilly walk so ‘mama can get her steps.’ But we do it, her and I. We brave the weather together and have a lot of really great conversations along the way. (If anyone would like to explain

how fish survive the winter to her, please, be my guest.) A study from McGill found that women who enrolled in a walking program for 24 weeks decreased their blood pressure by 11 points; increasing their step count to 9,000 per day. Movement really is medicine.

As we shift to a new season, I challenge you to move more and drive less. I highly suggest witnessing the sunrise as it hits the Three Sisters, turning the mountains into an indescribable shade of pink. The real #ferniestoke if you know what I mean.

So grab your watch or phone (it likely has a built-in step counter) and go.get. outside.

hen it comes to thinking green, my mind automatically thinks of the Three R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle. It was drilled into me since kindergarten to think about ways to reduce my waste, reuse old materials, and recycle my cans and bottles.

But when it comes to working out, the greener choices weren’t always obvious.

Simply put, I wasn’t making the best choices I could!

That being said, starting to make your workout greener actually isn’t that hard.

If you look at it through the scope of the Three R’s, there are many easy changes that you could make starting today to reduce your footprint, reuse old gear, and recycle more than just old newspapers.

Reduce When it comes to reducing, one simple switch you can make is choosing to walk to your gym or studio. Not only do you reduce your carbon footprint, but the walk itself it a great warm up and cool down, letting you maximize your time at the gym. If wanting to reduce your electrical footprint is on your list of going green, consider using a skipping rope instead of the treadmill or workout during daylight hours by a window. If you think in terms of calories spent instead of watts or litres, there is always an opportunity to reduce.

Reuse Every time there is an article about pretty re-usable water bottles, I get the sudden urge to go get another one. Even though I already own four! Instead of running out to buy another bottle, try “shopping” in your own house first. By taking stock of what you already own (reusable water bottles, gym bags, workout gear, hair ties…) you might discover you already own many of the “green” workout products, allowing you to focus on areas you lack instead

of doubling up. If you do own copious amounts of water bottles, leggings, skis, or yoga mats, consider giving them away to friends or family members who could get more use of them than you (or need an extra nudge in going green), donating them to the Salvation Army, or consigning them at shops such as Heaven’s Boutique (for clothing) or Gear Hub (for gear such as skis and boots).

Speaking of Gear Hub, have you seen their ski chair masterpiece? If your workout gear

has already lived its best life, think about using it in a new way! Skis and boards can become chairs and tables. Old gym t-shirts (with a pair of scissors and needle and thread) can become toilette bags for the gym. Get creative - the possibilities are endless!

Recycling If gear becomes broken beyond repair, then it is time to think of recycling it. Leaky glass water bottles, smartwatches that have bit the dust, and batteries from your heart rate monitor can all be recycled at the Fernie Bottle Depot. Old sweat towels can be taken to the SPCA to be used as bedding, and anything paper (think old training journals or printable workout calendars) can go into a mixed paper bin.

Spring-Fresh Salad Rolls

ach month we celebrate Fernie’s amazing food scene by challenging a local pro to create a five-ingredient recipe with delicious–and revealing–results.

by Sydney Salvador and her sister, Taylor Salvador, becomes a popular attraction at the corner of Highway 3 and McLeod in West Fernie. Offering Vietnamese street food, from wraps and noodle bowls to Banh Mi and Bubble Tea, the sisters’ menu focuses on good-to-go food vibrant with fresh flavours.

One of the most popular items, Salad Rolls, has been on the menu “since day one,” Sydney said. “They’ve been a staple.

It’s something that everyone can eat. They [can be] gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, keto-friendly. They’re very healthy. Kids love them!” And no chopsticks required.

“Just pick it up, dip it, eat it,” she said.

But there’s another reason everyone from brides planning their wedding reception to local cops swinging by on their way to work are placing multiple orders.

They’re the ultimate customizable snack food. “We’ll play around a lot [with the recipe]. We’ll put in slaws, our sweet sauce, different meat options, different veggies,” she said. She grows herbs–basils, mint, cilantro–in pots outside the truck for the rolls as well.

To prep the rice paper you’ll need a large, low bowl. “The key is to use lukewarm water–not cold water,” Sydney pointed out. Take each piece and fully submerge it in the water. Then carefully place the wet paper flat on a cutting board.

But before we get too carried away, let’s start with her basic recipe. First, explained Sydney, boil the rice noodles and rinse in cold water so noodles won’t stick. Quickly boil the shrimp (adding a little salt if you like), drain them, remove their shells and tails and then butterfly them, slicing through the back of each and fanning the sides out. Prep your vegetables, cutting the cucumbers into matchsticks.

Sydney builds her filling with lettuce first, followed by some noodles and cucumber, placing all in a horizontal row in the centre of the rice paper leaving a couple of inches of paper on either end for folding. Take the right and left sides of the paper and fold inwards. Then take the portion of the paper nearest you and pull it up and over the noodles and veggies.

Now add the shrimp, splayed flat and pink side up, along the top of the partially wrapped roll. Then carefully roll the roll away from you, sealing it with the remaining top third of the rice paper.

Once you’ve mastered the basic roll, get creative. “We’ve done them with our Honey Grilled Pork, our Lemongrass Beef,” said Sydney, as well as chicken and tofu. Take advantage of rice paper’s translucency to add fun colours, too. She

suggested edible flowers, for instance.

Fillings between layers of rice paper, Sydney advised, also prevents that chewiness from too many unseparated layers.

And then there are the sauces. One of Sydney’s good friends came up with this epic combo: Noodles, lettuce, cucumbers, Honey Grilled Pork, spicy mayo and hoisin sauce. “It’s sooo good!” declared Sydney.

She also suggested Sambal Oelek (garlic chili sauce), Sriracha, peanut sauce, and sweet Thai chili sauce for fillings or dipping.

hese days, you don’t have to look too far to find eco-friendly clothing, especially in our neck of the woods. We’re lucky to live in an area that has forward thinkers, business owners that are taking the initiative to carry brands that are making some serious changes in the world.

Can you believe that fashion is the second most polluting industry in the world? Yep, that’s right. Right there behind oil and gas is the clothing industry. These days we see fast fashion everywhere we look.

Deals, bargains and cheap clothing are ever enticing, but at what price? We have learnt that we need to know where our meat comes from but what about your clothes?

I recommend looking into the brand that you’re supporting and figuring out if they fit your ethos.

Where are the clothes made?

Are they open about their factory conditions?

How are the factory’s practices affecting the environment surrounding them?

Are the workers being paid a fair wage?

What fabrics are they using?

No Excuse for Single Use

T

he food industry encourages the use of three of the most environmentallydire single-use items: plastic bags, straws and takeaway cups. The unimaginable volume of waste created by these convenience items is entirely avoidable if consumers choose to invest in low-cost reusable alternatives.

Once the initial investment has been made, there is no downside to choosing to use the ecologically-sound option versus the disposable. In fact, there are oftentimes added benefits to going green. Read on to learn about the impact of plastic bags, straws and coffee cups as a result of the food industry, and how to avoid using the excuse for single use.

Each plastic bag is used for an average of 12 minutes total and will take at least 500 years to degrade in a landfill. In actuality, it will never completely break down and will become micro-plastics, continuing to pollute the environment. Every minute, approximately two million plastic bags are used around the world. This amounts to one trillion plastic bags used worldwide per year. The solution? Bring your own reusable bag. It’s that simple. As a further incentive to carry your own tote, many grocery stores now charge for plastic bags and some choose to eliminate supplying them altogether so shoppers have no choice.

Approximately 500 million plastic straws are used in the United States every day.

That is enough to circle the earth two and a half times‌ per day. Plastic straws are the eighth most prominent item found in the catastrophic expanse of ocean waste. Straws endanger the lives of oceanic animals like turtles and sea birds who mistake them for food. It is estimated that over one million sea birds die per year from ingesting plastic.

The kicker? Straws are most oftentimes a convenience item and not actually necessary for beverage consumption. Tell

Though we know plastic to-go smoothie cups and similar have a dismal environmental impact, consumers are oftentimes unaware of many “paper” coffee cups’ easily misunderstood level of recyclability. Though paper cups are generally touted as the greener option, the vast majority of them are lined with plastic polyethylene which allows them to be waterproof and hold liquid. This, and the fact that many cups are disposed of still containing liquid which leads to further processing requirements and results in fewer than one percent of “paper” cups being recycled. To alleviate this issue, bring your own cup! Many cafés and restaurants even offer a drink discount for bringing your own vessel. To save space in a purse or backpack, there are new collapsible cup options on the market, too.

The impact of plastic bags, straws and takeaway cups on the environment is immense. These items are commonly supplied to consumers for convenience, not necessity, and have reusable alternatives that are undoubtedly the greener option.

Furthermore, reusable bags and cups can even save the buyer money in the long run due to restaurant discounts. Get in the habit of bringing your own bag, straw and cup and never make an excuse for single use again.

he internet is the biggest thing our species has ever built. It spans the globe numerous times. It is intertwined with all aspects of life for a significant portion of the people on the planet. It is immense. And it takes a dastardly amount of energy to run it. According to some estimates, the world’s data centres are already generating as much C02 as all the world’s air travel. A dubious distinction at best.

A few short years ago we all had a computer in the house. Now we have several. Plus one we carry around in our pocket. Plus the tablet we use at meetings.

Etc. Not to mention the smoke detector, doorbell, voice assistant, car, dog collar, etc. etc. that are all connected to the internet now.

All those connections mean data. All that data means electricity. And most of the electricity means fossil fuel burning. I know plenty of people that wouldn’t dream of printing an email because of the poor use of paper, but think nothing of a group email to a dozen people that moves on and on through the company. That email doesn’t move around for free.

The biggest data storage companies, Amazon, Apple, and Google are working to move their data centres to renewable energy. And for good reason. In 2015 computing power demand from all the device connected to the internet accounted for 3-5% of the world’s electricity. And the demand is growing at 20% per year. By 2025 internet and communications worldwide is expected to consume 20% of all the electricity in the world1.

How can you help? There are two ways: manage your own energy use and support those companies that are supporting renewable energy.

At home, shut things off that you’re not using and consider unplugging them if you don’t need them all the time. At our house, we rarely use our TV so it’s unplugged.

The extra two or three minutes to revive it to watch a program, instead of instant on, is trivial. Screens are the biggest cost in the house usually. Have them enter power save mode as soon as it makes sense for you. And shut them off if leaving them for a period of time. The other significant energy cost is video streaming. Already consuming something like 2/3s of the internet bandwidth, it is an energy hog.

The golden rule: if you’re not watching it shut it off.

As for companies, Greenpeace publishes an annual report on the renewable energy efforts of the big internet players2. It’s worth looking through and seeing how well they are doing in moving towards powering their big data centres using renewables. And reading about what their long term plans are.

As with plenty of issues, voting with your pocketbook is the surest way to get companies to do the right thing. Apple, Facebook, and Google are at the top of the list for progressive organizations that are working at their centres and abroad to reduce their energy use and environmental impact. Samsung is one of the worst offenders. Thinking about upgrading your phone? If your choices are relatively equal in capability it may be worth considering which company is going to get your money and what they’re going to do with it.

Or how about a new laptop? Microsoft and Apple get a B and A respectively.

Acer and Asus get Ds. Again think of your dollars as votes. iPhones, Netflix, smart watches, internetconnected smoke detectors, these all provide various levels of enhancement and even safety to all of our lives. But much like how many of us have started to take a hard look at our cars and the impact of them on the world collectively, not just on our wallet at the gas station, we need to start looking at our devices and weighing the total cost and not just the monthly bill.

So, use those devices to get informed and then use that knowledge to get better energy for our devices. It’s a rare opportunity for a positive feedback cycle.

e begin April with a new moon in Aries on April 5 which is also known as the Goddess Moon as it forms almost a perfect horizontal crescent and is considered the beginning of the New Astrological Year. Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac and it is full of fire and zest.

An independent warrior that thinks before acting, has all the courage and energy paralleled to The Big Bang. This particular New moon will be especially powerful and is a great energy for initiating anything new.
