“What is your favourite Fernie season?” we ask hundreds of visitors and residents each year in our annual Best of Fernie survey, and time and time again the answer is the same – summer! This may come as a surprise to some, seeing as Fernie is predominantly known as a ski town that receives a ridiculous amount of champagne powder and an influx of seasonal visitors throughout the winter months. Why summer, you may be asking. What can possibly compete with faceshots and freshies? First of all, the days are longer. Starting in early spring, it is not uncommon to awake bright and early to enjoy a walk by the river with the dogs, a trail run with friends, or a cup of coffee and breakfast on a patio with the paper. Returning home with ample time to

get to work, or dive into other responsibilities for the day, you feel rejuvenated and that time is on your side. By late afternoon, planning is already underway for the evening’s activities, whether it is a round of golf, trail ride, game of tennis, playing in one of the City parks with the family, or dinner and drinks on a deck. Time is somehow in abundance and with extended daylight and warmer temperatures, we feel as though we can fit it all in with energy to spare. Secondly, warm, dry weather encourages people to not only get outside, but to get together. This year, we had a stretch of

very warm weather in early spring and even though the mountains were covered with snow and skiing was still a predominant activity, it felt like summer in town. The streets were busy with groups of people moving slowly throughout their day, savouring every minute of their time together in the warm, sunny weather. Regardless of what they were out doing it truly showcased the community nature this type of weather and time of year brings out in Fernie. With the arrival of July this quality is only augmented with weekly gatherings such as the Mountain Market and Wednesday Concert Series. WELCOME continued on next page

Location: Southeast corner of British Columbia, Canada, fully encircled by the Canadian Rockies. Just 45 minutes from both the Alberta and US borders. One of the last characteristics of Fernie that we feel truly makes summer a favourite is its four-season nature. A beautiful fall is swiftly followed by a snowy winter and a rainy spring. By the time summer shows its true colours, we are more ready than ever, sometimes feeling as though it could not have come soon enough. We dive into this season and all it has to offer uninhibitedly, not wasting a moment and finding it hard to plan even a weekend away. The busy schedule that accompanies July and August make it even harder, with the idea of missing events such as Canada Day festivities, Wapiti Music Festival or Wam Bam Dirt Jump Jam giving us some serious FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out).

Trail Network: There are over 300km of trails in and around Fernie, along with an additional 36 trails plus at Fernie Alpine Resort. The Lake District: Just 30 minutes west of Fernie, approximately ten lakes to visit on a hot day including the well-known Koocanusa. Fernie’s Name: William Fernie founded this town on one of his prospecting trips in 1887. Ghostrider Legend: Known for its legends, summer is a great time to check out the Ghostrider on Mt. Hosmer, revealing a distinctive horse and rider rumoured to be the ghost of an angry Indian Chief and his daughter pursuing Wiliam Fernie. Festivals: Fernie hosts the popular Wapiti Music Festival and Bibbity Bobbity Boo Children’s Festival in August, the Fernie Chautauqua and Fall Fair and Gillbilly Fest in September, the Fernie Pride Festival in October and a host of one-day events and festivals throughout the summer. RECREATION Like so many mountain communities, recreation is a way of life in Fernie. An early morning yoga class, run along the river, ride on the trails, round of golf, or an evening fly-fishing session or dip in the Elk quickly become a daily ritual during beautiful summer months. Some days, you may even get in one or two activities, taking advantage of the longer days which seem to bring with them more time and energy. In this section, you will find a plethora of options for you to enjoy during your stay. But be forewarned - it may be so difficult to decide when faced with this abundance, the result is extending your stay or booking another trip!

Early on in the mid 1960’s some locals put a bid in to host the 1968 Olympics, that bid helped motivate the community to get behind building a new ski hill at the current location. Who knows where the recreation industry will go in the future!

Mountain Man

I first remember Fernie when our parents brought us skiing in the mid 70’s. I don’t feel that old, but when we started there were only two T-bars and a Rope Tow, and the Socher family lived in a mobile home attached to the Day Lodge. We came to ski every other weekend staying in the Inn Towner Motel (now Huckleberry Plaza). Dave Rogers helped me pass the Level 2 ski instructor course and gave me a job in the winter of 79-80 (I did have to get a hair cut!). I met some incredible people and many are still here today. The valley had lots going for it but really more than that it attracted like minded individuals, great people who loved the mountains and continue to build this place. I worked away lots of the intervening years (as a Park Warden, Heli Ski Guide… always outside) and gained some knowledge of the tourism/outdoor recreation industry, but always knew Fernie was home. Ours is a real community first and foremost, not a made for resort town. We started with a good base and work hard to keep it. I don’t know if anybody would have guessed Fernie would boom in the recreation sector like it did, and it brings opportunities and problems like all growth does. The opportunities are such now that people in the recreation industry don’t have to move on to find year round or even summer jobs like I did for years, but housing and other costs challenge new and old residents alike. Recently I have been involved in bringing the International Snow Science Workshop

Q. Summer is voted Fernie’s best season year after year because... A. Of the bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities that exist here! My guess is that summer has twice the activities and four times the locations to do them in! Q. The best way to cool down on a hot day is… A. To float the river, swim in the river or just take your lawn chair in the river. In Fernie it’s only a short walk no matter where you live. Q. My favourite way to explore Fernie during the summer months is…

(ISSW) to Fernie in the fall of 2020. It’s a large project that will bring from 1000 to 1200 of the world’s top avalanche and snow science professionals from 25 countries or more for five days of workshops. For many of us in the avalanche industry, it’s a really big deal but for the community it may be even bigger. The ISSW will be putting us on the map with other past host cities like Innsbruck, Austria; Breckenridge, Colorado; Banff, Alberta; Grenoble, France; Whistler, BC; Anchorage, Alaska; and Davos, Switzerland.

A. To hike. I actually enjoy the early summer best for hiking, when there is still some snow up high. It’s better scenery and allows for fast travel over the snow in the Alpine. Once you get above the bush in many places you can go wherever you want. Q. One Fernie secret I am willing to share… A. Please keep this on the down low, but summer is not really Fernie’s best season! Spring and fall are, nobody around and the place to ourselves!

Fernie really does have it all when it comes to summer adventures with your kids. Here are three (or four) of my personal favourites that are a little off the beaten track.

Bisaro Cave It feels like you have stepped into another world; dense rainforest and cedars slung with bright green moss. Rickety bridges across little creeks. A long cascading waterfall aptly named Tumbling Waters. Watergate; a remarkable spout of H2O pouring straight out of a rocky ledge. Add wooden ladders to assist in getting up steeper terrain, and top it off with Bisaro Cave, an impressive gaping cavern etched in the side of the mountain. This trail has all the ingredients for a cool excursion.

How to get there: Drive NW on Hartley Lake Rd for 10.6 km making sure to stay on the ‘main’ road. This road is narrow and steep in places and may require 4×4. At the 7km road marker (measured from Bull River rather than Hwy 3) turn left into a clearing. If you don’t have 4×4 you will need to park here and walk 3km to trailhead. It takes 30-40mins to walk. If you do have 4×4 you can navigate the large mud/water holes, and close bushes/trees and drive those 3km to the 3 Sisters/Heiko’s trailhead.

What you need: Solid footing; the trail is steep and narrow in places. Insider Tips: If the water is low, take a flashlight and head back into the darkness of Bisaro Cave for a mini adventure! It takes a fair while to get to the trailhead, so make a day of it. The hike takes 30mins-1 hr each way.

Fernie Ridge This trail is rated as ‘very difficult’ with 750m of elevation gain and just over 3km of hiking to get to the peak. It makes a great family hike so long as you go slow and steady and take lots of breaks at the amazing view points. Big elevation gives a BIG sense of accomplishment. The panorama from the summit is spectacular – See it all; the Lizard Range, Mt Fernie and the City of Fernie, Three Sisters, Mt Hosmer, the Elk Valley and other rocky peaks as far as the eye can see. How to get there: A 4x4 is recommended to navigate the logging roads to the trailhead. Drive 2km along Coal Creek Road. Turn left onto Rifle Range Road. Go right at first fork, left at second fork, and then hard right at third fork. The road gets a bit sketchy from here with a deep mud puddle that eats 2wd cars. Use the Trailforks app to find the trailhead which is in the middle of a clear-cut and can be difficult to find. What you need: Plenty of water and food, sturdy shoes and bear spray.

Insider Tips: There are several spots where it is very steep with switchbacks and drop-offs. Keep an eye out for your kids and hold their hand where necessary to keep them safe.

Matheson Falls Looking for a cool adventure on a hot summer’s day? Matheson Falls is the place! Though it is only a short walk (about an hour with kids who are in explore-mode) it feels more significant and adventurous because the trail only lasts about 100m before dipping into the creek bed. Navigating through boulders, over logs and slippery rocks, the beautiful falls is about 1km from the parking area.

What you need: Swimsuit, grippy shoes to get wet while hiking in the water.

Local Swimming Holes Fernie has many inviting and picturesque places to take a dip and play in the heat of summer. We enjoy several different spots in the Elk River, particularly between the Golf Course and James White Park and a variety of places up Coal Creek and Lizard Creek. I suggest you just go for a hike in your swimsuits and water shoes and see what you come up with! How to get there: By vehicle or foot. Choose your own adventure!

Insider Tips: Go when the water is low. Take a picnic. Have a contest to see who can swim in the pool underneath the waterfall the longest!

Insider Tips: Play safe. Put your kid in a life jacket if they don’t swim well and avoid areas with wood in the water that create a strainer hazard.

How to get there: Travel about 10km east up Coal Creek Rd from Fernie. Drive over a little bridge just past mile marker 41. Park on left side of road in large pull-out. The trail begins on right side of road.

Cross Country Exploration on Two Wheels BY krista turcasso

Every year, I come up with different trails and loops to recommend to locals and visitors. You would think coming up with something new might be difficult, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actually quite the opposite! We are so blessed in this valley. The multitude of passionate bikers has meant years of dedication to trail building and maintenance, the majority done solely for the purpose of exploring this vast terrain on two wheels. The result has been an expansive trail network, offering a little (or more accurately a lot) for everyone. Here are three great options to check off your list this summer, all approachable for the beginner, great for recovery or training rides, and easy to add to if out there for a full-day affair. Level: Green/Blue Distance: Approximately 10km, return Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

Level: Blue Distance: Approximately 15km, return Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

Starting on the Bridge View Connector just below the campsite (adjacent to the Elk Valley Nordic Centre), climb or walk your bike up the short steep hill and continue on Sherwoody/Stumpy Woody until it meets up with Ben Emmett. This is a meandering trail through beautiful Cedar stands, that will take you all the way to the Cedar Trail at the base of Fernie Alpine Resort.

Starting from the Fernie Aquatic Centre, head out on the Coal Creek Heritage Trail until it connects with the Trans Canada Trail (The Great Trail) which will lead you to Coal Creek Road. Cross the road, and take River Road across the yellow bridge. To your right, you will see the Great Trail pick up again. Continue on this trail, as it turns into Ruby’s Way. Follow Ruby’s Way up to River Road, crossing again to hook onto New Roots. Climb this until you reach the Hyper sign, turn right down Roots. When you reach a small opening turn left picking up the Great Trail again on Snoop Lion. This fun, fast section takes you to an opening, where it intersects South Castle. Take a right down the single track crossing River Road, and connect here (to the left) to La Bamba. A bit more technical in sections, this meets up with lower Montane which you can take all the way back to the Red Barn. From here, cross

From here, you have options. A. Continue to the hill for a coffee and snack, taking in the view. B. Go back the way you came. C. Turn right and climb Cedar Trail until it meets up with Mega Hurtz single track. Take Mega Hurtz, Old Goat and Happy Gilmar to meet back up with Sherwoody, and where you started.

Coal Creek Road, and take the short climb to meet back up with Heritage Trail and back to where you started at the Aquatic Centre!

Large: The Great Trail, Fernie to Hosmer Level: Green/Blue Distance: Approximately 30km, return Estimated Time: 2-3 hours Start on Old Stumpy, just across from the Fernie Dog Park on Ridgemont Road (13th Street). Here it branches off to the right onto Coal Discovery Trail (The Great Trail). Take this as it crosses multiple Ridgemont Trails, following alongside the power line to your left and a logging road to your right. Recently logged, you will enjoy views of Mount Hosmer and the Elk River as you make your way across to Hosmer and newly created trails, bringing you right down to the Hosmer Ruins. Enjoy a quick break here, before returning the way you came. Did you know you can ride the Great Trail all the way to Sparwood? Consider this as an option, out and back or arrange a pick up or drop off - it’s great in both directions!

Summer carries with it moods as varied as the heat of the sun. Barbecues and busy gatherings with friends, baseball games and afternoon dips, a pitched tent on a sandy shoreline, the need for complete solitude beneath cliffs of a summit. Summers in Fernie are fraught with opportunity—sometimes the hardest part is choosing where to begin. What’s not hard is finding a place to go for a swim. There’s a freshwater source for the hiker, the biker, the fisher and the lounger. Just down the street, or miles away up some mysterious peak. It depends only on how far you want to go, and for how long.

find your perfect spot—a hidden swim hole, some adrenaline-inducing rapids, a sandy beach for suntanning. The Elk River saves Fernie residents on those long, scorching days, and gives everyone equal opportunity to chill their feet.

feet burning in the hot sand and extravagant people watching, there’s no better place for it than Koocanusa Campsite & Marina. Follow the turn off from Hwy. 3 onto Kikomun Newgate Rd. until you reach the long bridge, then turn left into the marina. You’ll notice a beautiful beach with floating docks, and there’s even a place for burgers and ice cream. Or, if you’re like me, save the hunger for 3&93 Dairy Bar on your way back into town—sit and eat poutines and ice creams while watching hummingbirds zoom in and around the nearby spruce trees. Just before Koocanusa lies Surveyor’s Lake, complete with full campground and facilities. The lake has two beaches, a nice walking trail, and beautiful turtles on nearly every

The lake is also perfect if you want an extended swim— sometimes there’s nothing better than floating on your back under the sun. Or look to Tie Lake for a similar experience. For something a little more unique, book a boat with Sunshine Houseboats & Marina. Gather a group of girlfriends and spend a weekend on the lake, fly off the houseboat slide or soak in the houseboat hot tub. Float from beach to secluded beach and lie on a floating unicorn in the lapping waves from passing boats. Savour the solitude of summer goodness.

If you find you’re more endeared by the sense of adventure, take a look at a topographic map or google earth and find your own secret lake or swim hole. We are lucky to live in Canada, so filled with fresh water we could never imagine swimming in all the lakes and rivers outside our front doors. Wherever you go, don’t forget to bring a towel. Frustration, fear and lack of focus are three things we try to avoid on the golf course but they seem to creep in when we least need them. In what other sport do we get thinking about the smallest things? I know that when I’m playing golf I try not to think about what happens if the ball goes out of bounds, I think about where I’m trying to get the ball to land. For some reason when we play golf we let these unwanted thoughts find their way into our heads and quite often let them consume us. So, here are some tips to stay in the game even when things aren’t going your way.

Create your own routine and stick to it.

Spend some time at the range hitting more than just your driver. Pay attention to where the ball lands when you hit each club. This is called your carry distance and should be used when you are picking a club on the course. Keep a notepad and write down the carry distance for each club. You should have 5-10 yards between each iron or hybrid. When you know how far each club will go you can be more confident that you picked the right one.

Just like a basketball player shooting free throws, a routine can help to keep you thinking about what you are trying to do. It can be as simple as closing your eyes for a moment or standing directly behind the ball to visualise your shot. Whatever it is make sure you do it for every shot. Remember, play ready golf - this routine should be kept to five seconds at the most. In a round with 90

Leave the outcome for later. There’s no point in thinking about what is going to happen before it has. Keep your mind thinking of the things you can control like your pre shot decision making. What effect will the wind, elevation change or lie do to your club choice? Pick the club you think will get the job done and swing it with full confidence that the ball will end up on target.

Know how far your clubs go.

In between shots keep it light. Talk to your playing partners, sing a song or have a look at your surroundings. Try to take your mind off of the game when it’s not your turn. A round of golf can take up to four hours and keeping your brain concentrated for the entire time can tire the best of us. Do whatever you can to avoid thinking too far ahead. In conclusion, try your best to think about the things that matter. Wind, elevation change, club selection, shot shape or landing zone. Stay away from things like if I hit it in the water I’ll make a triple bogey because I’ll hit it over the green then duff my chip and three putt. Thoughts like this are easy to come by and difficult to forget. When you step up to make your shot, know that you’ve made the right decision and execute. Taking the First Step BY abi moore

While the somewhat simple act of trail running is nothing new, it’s evolving with every step. Each year there’s a new line to toe, a new trail to explore and a new training buddy to be found. This is no truer than here in Fernie - with a trail network to keep even the most enthusiastic distance runner inspired and spur on the novice into taking their first step. The best part about trail running and racing is that everyone’s journey is entirely their own. Goals and mileage can be customised to fit around work schedules, social calendars and family time - better still they can become part of them. However, such enthusiasm should come with a warning, as long before you’ve entered your first race, your casual running could turn into a habit, your Sunday lie-ins replaced with the desire to scale a mountain before breakfast, and your beach vacations replaced with toe-nail losing adventuring.

But really, it’s a good problem to have – and better still, it’s a sport for life. Luckily for you, Fernie is a trail runner’s paradise with a plethora of endorphin induced adventures just waiting to be found, along with support from an increasing number of local stores, races, events and trail running clubs. Want in on the act this summer? Here’re a few key tips to help you start off on the right foot, and get yourself to both the start, and more importantly, the finish...

Find your right shoe. Then be prepared to change your shoe. A few times. And more than likely appear to be operating your own shoe shop out of

your basement. While the rest of your family might see you as having a “problem,” it’s well-proven that rotating through a variety of shoes is good for your feet. Plus, as you start running longer distances, you’ll soon realise what does, or doesn’t work for your foot shape. Be sure to match your foot shape to the shoe, pick the right cushioning level, heel-to-toe drop and of course shoe type – in short, don’t pick your shoes based on colour, or what works for your running buddy.

for success, but it also ups the fun factor. Sharing your exhaustion and utter hatred for hills with an equally sweaty, red-faced friend will soon help you see the funny side to running.

Learn to embrace hills. Yep, you might hate them at the start, but make them your friend - and to be honest, as Fernie sits in a valley, you have very little choice. Don’t be afraid to walk, just keep on moving. They don’t just make you fitter, but the endorphins, views and sense of achievement will make you feel like a champ. Even if you have just gone 0.8km in 45 minutes.

Don’t run for mileage. The terrain is what makes trail running so special, fun and unique. However, it’s also what makes you feel like some days you are going nowhere. If you’ve decided to invest in a GPS watch, (good call), you’ll discover that on steeper adventures, those kms take a long time to rack up. Don’t be alarmed if your watch stops clocking your kms altogether – that is the sign you’re tackling your very own Everest session.

No two runs are the same. Along with your new-found love of hills, be

prepared for ups, and downs. In short, some days you might feel like you’ve cracked it, while other days you might feel like you’ve never run in your life. That is normal, do not panic – rather, just get back out there and try again. Fernie has so many trails, be sure to switch up your routes and find new areas – it’s such a fun way to explore, and it will stop you comparing every run to your last.

It’s all in the technique. Good technique is key to success. Bad technique is one of the hardest things to kick. Find a professional to help, reach out to your local run club, or watch YouTube videos – it takes a while, but you’ll feel a difference and your body will thank you. While the internet is a great place to find information, check out the running section in your bookstore – there’s a book about every aspect of running, and there are some amazingly inspiring stories out there. If you haven’t read Born to Run by Christopher McDougall, it’s an absolute must…

Look after yourself. You’ll feel a whole lot better if you stay fuelled and hydrated. Carrying a water bottle, along with a little fuel and electrolytes will help both your run, and more importantly your recovery. If you’ve taken the next step to following a training plan, which states you need to run

again tomorrow, you need to be ready to roll. And if passing out on the couch doesn’t quite cut it, book regular massages of the deeptissue, slightly painful variety.

Lastly, set yourself a goal. Whether you’re a goal-oriented person or not, there is nothing quite like entering a race to spur on your running. Even if you’re not considering it a “race,” ensuring you’re adequately trained will raise your levels of enjoyment, the desire to ever do it again, and increase your chances of being able to walk down the stairs, (or sit on the loo), the following day.

Then, find that trail buddy, rescue a dog, buy four pairs of new trail shoes, a GPS watch that won’t stop beeping at you and go run, walk or literally crawl up a hill. 4. TCT TO UPROOTED Take the Heritage Trail from bike park, cross Coal Creek Rd and over the River Rd Bridge then pick up TCT trail on your right, continue until you meet the intersection of Uprooted then turn right and enjoy the descent!

1. ECO-TERRORIST BOARD WALKS From the Cemetery, climb Cemetery Bypass, Kiddie Up, Queen V, then take Eco-Terrorist on the right to the boardwalks and bench. Come back the same way.

2 LAZY LIZARD PARK TO POWERLINE Start at the Provincial Park, and climb Stove trail. A left at the first junction will take you to Lazy Lizard. Follow to the power line. If you are feeling strong it is a great ride all the way to Island Lake Lodge.

3. TCT (EVT) TO MONTANE HUT Take the Heritage Trail to connect with the TCT, and once across the River Road bridge pick up the TCT and follow the signs until Roots, turn right and descend to the hut. Come back the same way, or on Montane blue or green back to the barn.

4. KIDDIE UP TO SIDEWINDER Starting at the Cemetery, ride Cemetery Bypass, Kiddie Up, Queen V, then take the left at the Eco junction until stay left until you see the Sidewinder trail sign on your right.

Fernie Physiotherapy My interest in Physiotherapy was sparked during my time as a Professional Hockey Player in my early 20’s. I had numerous injuries that required visits to the team physio. I was always intrigued at how they could just figure out what was wrong and seemingly “fix” you with their hands. I later went on to do my bachelors of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary and my Masters in Physiotherapy at the University of British Columbia. My first job as a physiotherapist was actually at Fernie Physiotherapy, back when the clinic was located on the highway. When I first arrived in town in 2007 there were five private physio’s, two chiro’s, and two Registered Massage Therapists. These numbers have more than doubled and tripled since that time! I feel a reason for this growth is the mentality and passions of the Fernie population. People are active! They have moved here for the active mountain lifestyle and want to keep their bodies working. Locals who grew up here don’t even know how active they are, it is just normal life for them. Some of my favourite patients are retirees who go to the gym in the morning, then mountain bike for two hours, followed by a few hours of trail work in the afternoon. Yes, you know who you are, and thank you for your hard work on the trails! Q. Summer is voted Fernie’s best season year after year because... A. The long days enable you to do numerous

activities in a day and still have time to get together with friends for a drink on the deck. An average weekend day for many is a mountain bike in the morning, followed by some fishing or golf in the afternoon, finished by an outdoor meal with family or friends on one of Fernie’s awesome decks. Q. The best way to cool down on a hot day is… A. Go up… Hike to the top of Three Sisters or traverse one of the many ridgelines you see from town, then stop for a dip in the Elk River on the way home.

Q. My favourite way to explore Fernie during the summer months is… A. Definitely by mountain bike! The hardest decision a Fernie-ite has on a summer day is deciding which trail network to go to. Some energetic folks just ride them all! Yes... serious first world problem :) Q. One Fernie secret I am willing to share… For those aspiring rock climbers… there are some great bolted sport climbs off the Spineback Trail at Island Lake.

Lengthening and Repairing Through Yoga with Katie Joyce

With summer upon us, our bodies are forever busy as we try to soak up every moment of sunshine and enjoy all the outdoor activities our beautiful valley offers. Runners, hikers, and bikers alike, if we find just a few minutes each day to counter all the work we ask of our bodies, the benefits are noticeable as we lengthen and repair the major muscles we use to travel up and down our mountains. Here are few simple (simple does not mean easy) poses to get you going.

Remember it is always a good idea to start with some gentle movement (a brisk walk, a few sun salutations) to warm up the body before asking it to open up. Move just into the first edge of each pose (do not go to the full depth) and let the body open slowly with time and your breath. I give guidelines for how long to hold each pose, but feel free to spend longer in any of them if it’s comfortable and the body is asking for more.

2. Low Lunge – Targets Quad/ Hip Flexor

Open Up Your Feet Come to all fours, bring the inner edges of your feet and your ankle bones together, tuck all ten toes under and sit back on your heels (keep pressing the inner feet and ankles together), hands on your thighs (option to place a blanket or pillow between your hips and heels, or your hands down to the floor in

From all fours, bring your right foot between your hands, ankle stacked right under your knee. Bring your hands to blocks level with the front foot and directly under your shoulders so you can lengthen your spine finding one long line from your tailbone out through the crown of your head, reach the sternum long and widen the chest (don’t round and collapse forward). Hold for 10-15 breaths. Option to bring the hands to the right thigh, reach the tailbone down to the earth, crown of the head to the sky for an additional few breaths, or right hand to thigh, raise left arm to sky. Repeat sequence on the opposite side.

3. Reclined Hand to Big Toe – Targets Hamstrings, IT band Lie on your back, bend your knees, soles of feet on the floor. Reach your right leg into the air, with one side of a strap (band or scarf) in each hand, place the strap across the ball of your foot, ankle flexed, press your heel towards the sky, leg in line with the hip. Knee can be as bent as you need, but ensure your toes, knee, and quad are pointing in the same direction (behind you) to keep the leg aligned. Left leg is either bent, foot on the floor OR long on the ground, ankle flexed, leg engaged, aligned with the hip, toes, quad, knee pointing toward the sky. Hold 10-15 breaths. Pass both straps into your left hand, keep the right hip glued to the floor, and take the right leg across the body just an inch or two to move into the outer edge of the raised leg. Hold for 5-10 breaths. Repeat other side.

4. Reclined Pigeon – Targets Glutes Lie on your back, knees bent, feet on the floor. Cross your right ankle over your left knee, lift head and shoulders to reach arms through, take hold behind your thigh, or in front of your shin. Option to use the strap around your shin/thigh if you need more space (longer arms). Release your head and

shoulders down, hug your legs into your chest. Shift a little side to side to find that sweet spot. Press your right knee away from you to deepen the stretch, but never any pain in the joints! Back off if this is the case. Hold for 10-15 breaths. Repeat other side.

5. Reclined Bound Angle â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Targets Inner Legs, Chest Lie on your back, knees bent, feet on the floor. Bring your blocks (or pillows/stacks of books) to either side of your hips. Let the soles of your feet come together, knees fall open, and place the blocks under the outer edges of your legs just at that place where you start to feel a stretch (closer to the hips for more support). Arms can be down by your sides, out in a T position, or over head, circling the face, palms facing up. Hold for 10-15 breaths. ARTS AND CULTURE While recreation might be what brought you here, you will soon find yourself emerged in our cultural side. Fernie has a rich history, peaking your interest as you walk alongside the iconic brick buildings on Victoria Ave. It is also home to a variety of events, alluring locals from their homes and visitors from around the world. On top of this, there are many talented artists who reside here, adding colour to our lives through their studios and creations, music and words. Make sure to take in one of the many events during your stay, or at the very least visit the Fernie Museum or Arts Station to fill your cultural cup. We promise it won’t disappoint.

Musician and Photographer I don’t think I’ve ever really identified as someone involved with arts or culture. But ever since digital cameras could take videos I was enamoured with the idea of recording stuff and taking videos of my friends and me doing stuff. Like skiing or biking or trampoline stuff or really anything. Now that’s what I do for a living full-time, with a few months in the end of winter pretending to be a skier guy (ha). I feel super attached to Fernie and it really is a huge part of who I am. I feel kinda silly saying that, but I really care about making the place I live as fun as possible. Because it’s got an amazing mix of my favourite things to do. Maybe that’s just because I’m from here and grew up around it. The skiing and biking thing has just been my life since I could remember. But playing music is one of those things I always wished I was doing, and never did. Until a few years ago we were at jam night at the Royal over Christmas, and I’d never really known about those events, and some of our friends got up and just destroyed. The crowd was so good and I couldn’t believe these guys weren’t even a band and just put on this amazing show just so effortlessly. I’m pretty sure people were crowd surfing, on a Wednesday! And I remember that night saying to myself “I wanna do THAT.” And then a year later Seany J and The Boys opened for The Runs at the Northern for the Burrrlapz, The Movie after party. And ever since, playing in a band in Fernie is one of the luckiest thing I get to do I think. Those jam nights are pretty special and the guys that put them on are legends. Shout out to Toppo and Zac and Hart, Dey Dey too.

The Fernie music scene is pretty good actually. There’s tonnes of super talented musicians that just come out of nowhere and will just go rip at jam night, and then there’s also a growing number of small basement band crews that are super super good. I’m fairly young, and I know it’s not a new thing to town. But right now there’s a wave building of local bands that put on a great show, who all really care about doing it well.

A. I’m quite the inside guy mid-day in summer… just glued to my computer editing, unless me and Huddy are riding bike park laps at the resort, hah. But I love swimming in the river, and the Elk River is sweet for jumping in and floating around. I’d take a quick swimming session before doing longer tube floats personally. Also, Happy Cow after riding bikes in the evening. They’re open till 10 at night! Crazy stuff.

Q. Summer is voted Fernie’s best season year after year because...

Q. My favourite way to explore Fernie during the summer months is…

A. Because people forget how fun skiing pow is, haha. No but the summer really is amazing in Fernie, and likely is a lot of places across the province I’m sure. Being able to ride your bike until 10pm is amazing. And warmth. People like warmth.

A. Bike for sure, one of my favourite things is cruising home at night with a bunch of friends on our dirt jump bikes and doing really fast sidewalk gaps and carving around in the middle of the night.

Q. The best way to cool down on a hot day is…

There are plenty of people who parrot the mountain-town refrain, “Came for winter and stayed for the summer” in these parts. While it doesn’t roll off the tongue as well, it’s also fitting to say, “Came for the outdoor rec and stayed for the culture.”

Take a walk down and around Victoria Avenue and you can see where this little town’s priorities are. Nestled between gear stores and restaurants are shops that feature the work of local artists, artisans and authors. And check out the local art on the banners hanging from the light posts downtown. Even when you slip off the main drag, you’ll find painted dumpsters, back alley murals and metal sculptures. Tourism Fernie has a downloadable Art Walk Map and Guide available on its website. (Also available for download is a heritage map that is a wonderful primer to Fernie’s historic buildings.) Don’t forget to check on the exhibits at The Arts Station and the Fernie Museum. The Arts Station features many local artists on a monthly rotation, with openings on the final Thursday of every month. The Museum has a permanent exhibit on the ground floor, while the second-floor exhibits change every few months or so. (The Museum also has a couple of interesting virtual exhibits on its

website that feature old-timey photos of the area and its people.) When it comes to books, there are more than a handful of local authors whose books you can find at Polar Peek Books & Treasures (just ask the knowledgeable staff!), but worth mentioning are Kevin Allen’s Our Past Matters: Stories of Gay Calgary and Terry Nelson’s Fernie Area Hiking Trails and Natural Plant Compendium. Allen’s book began as a gig as historianin-residence at Calgary Outlink in 2012 and morphed into a much larger project that resulted in a website, guided tours, a documentary short and Our Past Matters, which tells the stories of Calgary’s gay history in 70 short stories. Nelson’s book has been a long time in the works, as Terry has been travelling, planning and building the local trails for several decades. Fernie Area Hiking Trails is a much-needed companion to the growing trail network in the area. It’s also colourful and

packed with information about local flora. Finally, Fernie loves music all year, but especially in the summer. Wapiti is an annual affair and is Fernie’s love letter to emerging Canadian musicians. Intimate and familyfriendly, Wapiti Music Festival takes over Annex Park August 9 and 10 with a variety of bands and singer-songwriters. And then don’t forget to take the little ones to Rotary Park on the 11 for Bibbity Bobbity Boo for the Children’s Festival at the Mountain Market. The Wednesday Socials are also a must-do and a personal favourite. Every Wednesday evening in July and August, come see live bands at Station Square. There are drinks, food and atmosphere, all before it gets dark. The Socials have become a summer staple and feature acts from across the country and around the world. Ace Ferguson Studio I have worked with my hands and created for as long as I can remember, an entire lifetime of tinkering and collecting knowledge. Moving to BC in 2010, I left the work I knew, and becoming a professional artist became my sole aspiration. Nelson, BC was good to me, and it was there I had the gift of time to hone my artistic interests. I passionately worked part-time at the bead shop, Abacus Beads, and a wealth of knowledge was gained there! The other 5.5 days a week, for five years, I explored anything and everything my creative heart desired. I delved deep into micro macrame, I learned to wet felt hats and needle felt sculptures, I was sewing, freehand beading, wire wrapping, knitting, and so on. This time to develop my skills laid the groundwork for my life today. Fernie, BC has been great to me! I arrived four years ago, fully prepared to showcase my evolved skills. I was quick to learn that this community and its visitors are hugely supportive and inclusive of artists. Within months, I joined the Spinners and Weavers Guild, was performing music again, joined a charitable group, learned to crochet that first very cold winter, consigned in stores, and was finding success vending at the Mountain Market and Fernie Craft Fairs. In just a couple short years, I found myself ready to open my own creative space in Fernie. Ace Ferguson Studio was my creative solution to opening my first shop and studio. City Council supported my mobile vending dream, and all I had to do was renovate a bus that sat for more than a decade along the highway. Although it was a mountain to climb, June of 2018 I opened the bus

and I couldn’t be happier! The downtown businesses and community have warmly welcomed Ace to the neighbourhood, and the collective vision is to have more budding businesses join the mobile vending area downtown. It is just this kind of open mindedness, forward thinking, community support, and endless encouragement that makes Fernie a wonderful and abundant place to call home. Q. FOOD AND DRINK Regularly we overhear visitors and new residents comment on Fernie’s culinary scene. People are happily surprised by the quantity and variety of options available to them in Fernie. This diversity has built over the years, and continues to grow as there is more demand and interest for unique offerings and spaces. For a small mountain community that depends on industries beyond tourism, it’s impressive to say the least. Whether breakfast, lunch or dinner, a snack and refreshment post recreation, or a coffee and savoury treat with friends, your taste buds will thank you in Fernie!

Sydney Salvador The Chopstick Truck

We jumped into Fernie’s food sector when we opened The Chopstick Truck, a family run Vietnamese food truck, in the summer of 2015. The truck specialises in Asian/ Vietnamese cuisine, having many vegetarian, vegan and kid-friendly options. Our goal is to have a menu that everyone and anyone can order from. Food and beverage (F&B) is an evergrowing industry which calls us to seek out the best products that are on the market. From compostable packaging, to sourcing local goods and produce. Fernie’s F&B has grown a lot over the last five years seeing local businesses supporting each other and sharing environmentally sustainable practices. Being a resort town close to the Alberta and US borders, it brings the opportunity to serve both tourists and the locals alike. It’s always great to chat with a customer as to why they chose Fernie. The food sector and community bring each other together for events like the Fernie Show ‘n’ Shine and fundraising events throughout the Elk Valley. One of the faster growing events would be the Wednesday Night Concert Series. In 2015 The Chopstick Truck was the only food vendor! Fast forward to 2018 and the addition of four more vendors speaks to the ever-growing popularity of a great event for all ages to attend and a taste for every palate.

Summer in Fernie is sweet. It can also feel rather short, after the lengthy months filled with all things pow. This is why it is very important to take advantage of being outdoors in the sun with friends and family for every occasion possible.

Morning Coffee It is quite magical to watch the sun fill the valley while sipping a warm cup of coffee! Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities to do just this! Victoria Ave is home to a variety of cafés who all provide fantastic options for this occasion. Visit Big Bang Bagels or the Valley Social for their unique wooden structures out front - people watching for days. For a more secluded feel, check out Freshies or Mugshots who both have patios out back. Beanpod offers a more old-school feel, with chairs and table on the sidewalk, making it a more social affair.

Enjoy a Meal Why eat indoors for breakfast, lunch or dinner when you can be outside, basking in the warmth of summer and enjoying the scenery that surrounds Fernie? For breakfast, you definitely want to check out The Blue Toque at the Arts Station. This used to be the train station back in the day, so don’t be surprised when you hear the horn blasting just metres away! It’s part of our charm. Loaf also hosts a wonderful breakfast, with a wooden patio out front. Just down the street, Lunchbox offers a fresh and healthy menu for lunch, and of course a patio to enjoy it on. Around the corner, Infinitea has healthy options that your taste buds will enjoy, and a side-street patio! As the day’s activities

come to an end and dinner is on your mind, the sun is still out! The Asian restaurants have successfully responded to the demand for outdoor dining, with popular patio settings available at Yamagoya, The Curry Bowl, Sushi Wood, the Chopstick Truck, Tandoor Grill at the Stanford Inn along Hwy 3, and the Himalayan Spice Bistro in town. And of course you don’t want to miss out on the cajun-inspired cuisine at the Smokehouse at Red Tree Lodge and its outdoor setting, or the magical lighting and greenery available at the patio at Nevados downtown.

Après You’ve just finished a round of golf and are keen on a refreshment. Well, you’re in luck. The Fernie Golf Course’s Cast Iron Grill offers panoramic views of the valley and lovely evening sunshine and sunset! After a day riding the Elk Chair at Fernie Alpine Resort, you’ll also be happy to find Legends in the plaza has a well-placed patio for post-ripping pints. At the base of the Elk, you’ll find Cirque Restaurant and the Rusty Edge, both with patios facing the beautiful

headwall at the hill. Riding or trail running in town? No worries! The Brickhouse, Northern, Parkplace Pub, Kodiak Lounge and The Fernie all have fantastic patios and après options, make sure to check out their weekly specials! If you’re out there, tackling the increasingly popular FBC Trails to Ale, you’ll be happy to find their patio perfect for celebrating such a fantastic accomplishment. And if fly-fishing is your main event today, the Bridge Bistro is perfectly positioned to continue watching and listening to the Elk River as the sun sets with a cold drink and snacks. The sun cycle in summer is something we definitely cherish. Of course we adore it in winter too, but with the days stretched out it’s as if we are present for it all… the rising sun, as it first hits the Lizard Range, Mount Fernie and Three Sisters. The high sun, creating brightness, heat and energy. And my personal favourite, as the sun sets creating a striking contrast between the mountains and skies. So now that you have been provided with the occasions and various options, get out there and make it happen!

My husband Jason and I have always been adventurers, initially drawn to the Rocky Mountains... myself from Quebec, Jason from the United Kingdom. We met in Banff in 1995, and spent the next four years travelling and snowboarding around the world working in between to pay for our next winter season or travel destination. When we heard of the investment in Fernie Alpine Resort in 1998, we were excited for this mountain town’s future, and decided to look into real estate here. We absolutely fell in love with this area, and decided to purchase the Snow Valley Motel in 1999. Extensive renovations, including adding a threebedroom suite on top for our home, were our first steps… as well as growing from a family of two to six! In 2015, we recognised that we needed a ‘refresh’ including additional upgrades to become to first Boutique Hotel in Fernie, alongside rebranding. We also saw an opportunity to support the tiny home movement, developing six rental tiny homes with a communal gathering unit! Snow Valley Lodging was born, retaining ties to the original name but also showcasing the diverse opportunities available here. Both Jason and I are proud to be a part of this sector in Fernie, and to see how it has evolved over the last twenty years. And we are excited to see where the next twenty take us.

With more than 140 kilometres of turquoise water, there’s plenty of room for everyone to play. And with water temperatures averaging 25.5 C in the summer, there’s no place that I’d rather be on a hot day. There really isn’t anything else like this area in southeastern BC or Alberta.

A. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, one of the best adventures around Fernie is a day trip to the lake with family and friends. Pack a picnic lunch and spend the day exploring the various beaches and bays, alternating between swimming and lounging. For those who are more ambitious, give cliff jumping or wake surfing a try. Q. One Fernie secret I am willing to share… I suggest putting your boat in at the government dock across from Cutts’ Marina and heading north to the cliffs. Anchor there and enjoy the action!

BY Patrick Lampman So you finished building your dream house and all that is left is to complete the yard. Sounds easy, right? You grab a shovel, punch it into the earth, and quickly realise that the construction process has turned your property into wasteland of rock and compacted earth. So, now what? As a landscape designer, I always remind my clients that you get one chance to do the yard properly. The initial investment in designing a proper yard will enhance your property dramatically and reduce the stress associated with completing the project. A 3D landscape design allows you to see the potential that can occur in your yard. It allows for immediate changes to be implemented before any work has started and will save time and money in the long run. An experienced designer will also recommended plants that will work in this area and that are resistant to disease, drought and deer. The design shows where the plants will go in the yard and allows for proper spacing as the plants mature. How the perennials, shrubs, lawn, and trees interact with each other and with the house is very important to the overall finished look of the yard. In many cases, clients opt to have no lawn and request a more naturalised yard comprised of plants, stone, mulch and even water features. Once the design portion is completed, you must decide if you want to tackle the job by yourself or have an experienced and reputable company do some or all of the work for you. And this gets us back to the realisation that your shovel is not going to work very well. What will take you a whole summer to complete with your shovel can be completed with the proper machinery within a matter of

your yard should ever look. If properly taken care of, the yard will only get better as it matures. Proper fertilisation and pruning practices will make all the difference and will create a yard that is enjoyable, beautiful and easy to manage over the years.

The first yard I designed in Fernie was my own. It was a new house that was built on a property that was once a parking lot. You can imagine how compacted that earth was when the project started. This is also the first job that PlanScape, An Outdoor Design Company and Valley View Contracting did together. When I look back at the yard when it was first completed, the plants are all so small and seem out of balance with the house. But over the years, everything has grown and filled in as planned and now the yard is beautiful and very easy to maintain. So I have been in your shoes and I know what it is like to have a wasteland of a yard. City of Fernie Community Services Director I’ve had the privilege of a great career in the public service sector dedicated towards building strong, healthy and vibrant communities. One of my first jobs was as a summer camp leader with the City of Toronto. After completing University I was drawn to opportunities where I could contribute to improving quality of life by supporting community based programs and services. Approximately ten years ago, our family moved out of the very large City of Toronto to live in smaller resort areas in central Ontario. We very quickly embraced the more rural lifestyle, specifically in communities which offer a range of exciting outdoor living experiences. We have also valued and enjoyed the enhanced cultural and culinary opportunities that many resort communities offer. Moving to British Columbia has always been a family dream, especially because of the great skiing relative to Ontario. When the opportunity to work in Fernie presented itself, we were very excited about exploring this adventure. After spending approximately nine months in Fernie I can sincerely say it has exceeded my expectations. Fernie is a diverse and growing community with a great sense of spirit. There are a large number of local residents that are dedicated to ensuring that Fernie offers a wide range of valuable and exciting programs and services. I am very appreciative that I can work closely with the committed residents of Fernie to ensure that our community programs and facilities are developed and managed in a responsive and accountable manner.

Q. My favourite way to explore Fernie during the summer months is…

A. Having experienced one summer here, I can vouch for the slogan,”We came for the winter and stayed for the summer.” My first summer was filled with pleasant new adventures, long (hard) hikes, mountain biking, rafting, Wednesday Night Concert Series… the list goes on. I’m really looking forward to summer 2019 to take greater advantage of all Fernie has to offer.

A. On my bike. Believe it or not, we drove across Canada trailering our road bikes, silly thing for Fernie. Luckily I also brought my townie bike too. Since arriving I’ve had the chance to explore the extensive trail networks on a mountain bike and this winter I loved riding a Fat Bike.

Q. The best way to cool down on a hot day is… A. Enjoy a cool beverage at one of the many great local bars and restaurants. The best part is that you can also enjoy great food and entertainment.

Q. One Fernie secret I am willing to share… A. Fernie is home to the greatest yoga and cycle instructors. Thanks to them I can’t get enough of my cycle and Yin classes!

Fernie Parks and Spaces BY Norm McInnis As you will see in this Summer Guide, Fernie is blessed with natural and built spaces that offer summer enjoyment no matter what you are looking for. A great place to start is the Historic Summer Walking Tour offered by the Fernie Museum. This tour visits 12 of Fernie’s most iconic Historic Downtown buildings and features a variety of architectural styles and photo opportunities. Begin the walking tour at #1, the Fernie Arts Station at 601 1st Avenue. Tour Length Accessible, paved sidewalks Approx. 45 minutes–1.5 hours. Within the City boundaries there are three major looped trail networks. Great Northern Loop, 5.7 km. This trail offers many opportunities for wildlife viewing around the McDougall Wetland, and Hutchinson Spring areas. Portions of this trail pass through private property and managed forest, please respect this privilege. Main Town Loop, 7.5 km. This trail circles the downtown and Annex areas of Fernie, and offers excellent access to city amenities, the Historic Downtown, and the Elk River. James White / Cokato Loop, 7.6 km. Take time before departing from the trail hub to view the interpretive panel on the local history of the coke ovens. This trail also follows part of the Coal Creek Heritage Trail and ends at Fernie’s Aquatic Centre. Fernie is world renowned for its trails. After enjoying a walking tour or hike on the trails it might be time to find some shade and relax at one of our parks or leisure facilities Aquatic Centre: Featuring a six-lane, 25 metre main pool, 150’ waterslide, kids pool, hot tub and steam room. Soak in the hot tub after a day’s adventure or splash and have fun to escape the heat - there is a fabulous Splash Park outside of the Aquatic Centre. Skateboard Park: An excellent spot for the skateboarder in your family. The outdoor park features several bowls and streetscapes. Rotary Park: Essentially the multi-function park of Fernie, Rotary Park features play structures for kids, grass areas, picnic sites, seating areas and a gazebo. It is the perfect place for the kids to have fun or to hold your celebration. Ridgemont Park: Ridgemont Park offers play structures for children, a large field for activities and a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. 10 Ave Park: The Annex’s neighbourhood top park features a play structure for children and a grass area for relaxing.

Annex Park: Annex Park is a quiet setting featuring picnic areas, horseshoe pits, under a canopy of trees and a large grass field and duck pond. Prentice Park: Prentice Park is comprised of two slo-pitch fields, a soccer field, a running track and a concession area. This is Fernie’s primary location for tournaments and track and field competitions. James White Park (Mount View): Situated alongside the Elk River, James White Park provides a beautiful forested area featuring towering pines, mountain scapes and a host of amenities including tennis courts, horseshoe pits, bocci courts, slo-pitch field and a minor ball field. Railway Park: Our newest park is a ten acre off-leash park in the heart of Historic Maintown. Paved walkways and plenty of open space for you and your four legged friends. FEATURE TrailsHIKES AT FERNIE ALPINE RESORT SKELETON FLATS & SUMMER ROAD Skeleton Flats Difficulty: Moderate Length: 1.5km/1hr one way Elevation Gain/Loss: 156m/-36m A stunning alpine hike that climbs through the ‘Dancer’ avalanche path to connect with the Summer Road. This unique ecosystem provides nutrient rich habitat for wildflowers, moose, and bears. Please stay on trail to protect glacier lilies, blue clematis, and western anemone wildflowers. Summer Road Difficulty: Moderate Length: 2.46km / 2hrs one way Elevation Gain/Loss: 320m/-21m The sub-alpine forests will thin into alpine tundra as you steadily climb this wide road through the Lizard Bowl. Enjoy premium

views from the mid-trail observation deck. A fossil zone at the end of the trail is full of examples of ancient sea life. This trail also makes a great ‘down’ route from the Skeleton Flats trail.

BOOM / GORBIE / OLD GROWTH Boom Trail / Peak to Park Difficulty: Easy Length: 1.43km/1hr one way Elevation Gain/Loss: 73m/-140m A great hike on a hot day! This wide multi-use road travels through old growth cedar forest but also offers exceptional views up the Elk Valley. Interpretive signage detailing some of the special ecological features that can be found on this trail. Multi-use trail (hike/bike).

FERNIE SUMMER HIKING MAP Gorbie Loop Difficulty: Easy Length: 1.5km /1 hr round trip loop from trailhead Elevation Gain/Loss: 69m/-101m This wide loop road descends through the Cedar Bowl drainage to connect the resort with the Fernie Provincial Park trail network. Watch for moose in the seasonal creek and willow beds to the right of trail. Hike back up or connect with View trail to return to base area. Multi-use trail (hike/bike). Old Growth Grove Difficulty: Easy Length: 1km /1 hr round trip from trailhead Elevation Gain/Loss: 91/-91m This spectacular, secluded trail meanders through a magical pocket of old growth forest to a notable stand of ancient cedar trees.

LAKE TRAIL (2 km, 1 hr) & FIR TRAIL (3 km, 2 hrs) Rating: Easy Access: From the trail head below the Bear Lodge, head down the trail to the lake and follow the signs. A gentle hike around Island Lake. CEDAR VALLEY RAIL TRAIL (3km, elevation gain 50 m) OLD GROWTH TRAIL (1 km, elevation gain 250m) Rating: Easy. Hiking Time: 45min -1hr each. Access: The Rail Trail starts at the base parking area, 30m past the Island Lake gate and finishes at the Old Growth Trail head. SPINEBACK TRAIL (3.5 km, elevation gain 530m, 3-4 hrs) Rating: Moderate Access: Via the Lake Trail and Fir Trail toward the west end of Island Lake. Once you reach the marked junction, follow the Spineback signs.

MOUNT BALDY LOOP (10.5 km, elevation gain 620m, 4-6 hrs) Rating: Mod to Adv Access: From the trail head below the Bear Lodge head west following signs for the Mount Baldy Trail. From the summit, the trail traverses the Mount Baldy ridge, continuing west. TAMARACK TRAIL (8 km, elevation gain 640m, 5 hrs) VIEWPOINT (4 km, elevation gain 200m, 3 hours) Rating: Mod to Adv Access: From the trail head below the Bear Lodge head east following signs for the Tamarack Trail. The trail winds its way up the south-west slopes of Mount Fernie.

NEW! GOLDILOCKS TRAIL Length: 2.5 km / Type: Loop / Hiking Time 1.5 hrs / Elevation Gain: 210 m / Rating: Advanced / Access: The trail starts at the top of the Spineback Trail (at the second bench) and follows the valley between Baby Bear and Papa Bear peaks. It wraps around the back of Baby Bear to the Upper Nonstop saddle with dramatic views of the headwall and The Valley. The trail continues around the east side of Baby Bear and follows a series of switchbacks down the valley between Baby Bear and Mama Bear peaks. It then completes the loop back at the top of the Spineback Trail.
