WELCOME TO FERNIE, BC BY KRISTA TURCASSO

MATT KUHN PHOTO

THIS WINTER, THE FERNIE FIX CELEBRATES TEN YEARS IN PRODUCTION. TEN YEARS! IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE AND SOMETIMES DIFFICULT TO REMEMBER IT ALL. BUT, WHEN I THINK BACK AND COMPARE THE NOW AND THEN, TWO DISTINCT AND POLAR OPPOSITE THOUGHTS NEARLY COLLIDE IN MY MIND AS THEY OCCUR: “SO MUCH HAS CHANGED!” AND, “NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED AT ALL!” HOW CAN THAT BE? ›››

PHOTO

In November of 2006, Vanessa and I decided to publish a monthly magazine. We chose the size and format. Decided on the conversations we wanted to centre on within its pages. And set out to get it done, in one short month. While Vanessa concentrated on the design and layout, I went about creating or procuring the content. After a lot of hard work and a few all-nighters, the first edition of the Fernie Fix hit the stands on December 1. Little did we know that in ten years, we would never feature the same individual twice. People often asked early on, aren’t you worried you will run out of stories to tell

or people to feature? And for a moment, we perhaps felt a twinge of anxiety. But all it took to shake that feeling was taking a solid look around and seeing that Fernie was continually encouraging involvement from its residents and attracting involved citizens to its doors. One of our most popular columns is the “Featured Resident,” which shares the story of a person residing in town (or sometimes, visiting) who volunteers his or her time and is truly passionate about this town and what goes on here. Even though this column has been running since the beginning, we still feel like there are so many people out there helping out in ways

we have yet to discover, and the many who will be a big part of things to come… and it’s exciting anticipating these future stories, and continuing to inspire others to take part as well. Another popular column that has stood the test of ten years is the “Featured Artist.” Now, this we definitely felt may be a column we retired at some point. How many artists could work and live in Fernie? Well, we’ve learned (at the time of writing this piece) easily 118 and it looks like it won’t be tough to keep that number rolling. It’s such an amazing feeling and speaks volumes of our community that

KYLE HAMILTON PHOTO

FERNIE FACTS Founded in 1897 and incorporated as the City of Fernie in 1904.

KYLE HAMILTON PHOTO these individuals are truly in abundance here, and that Fernie’s arts and culture scene is on a steady rise. It’s also wonderful to see how the careers of these individuals have really taken off within and beyond our little town. Outside of columns, we have contributors. Early on, the pages of the Fix represented a handful of writers and even less photographers. Now, we are regularly being introduced to talented individuals wanting to share their work and creations with us and our readers. Not only has this enhanced the magazine and made it a more professional and high quality product, as a representation of Fernie it also shows that Fernie, too, has developed and grown in this way over the same period. We’ve also noticed diversity and development within our advertising base. Each year, new businesses open their doors to the community and create a strong niche for themselves here. Others are evolving and experiencing exciting changes within. In response to these changes we were witnessing, we started the “New Business” and “Business News” sections within the magazine, and it’s been pretty amazing to think about the number of businesses we have introduced, or shared news for.

At this point, you’re probably thinking… but that’s a whole lot of change. The thing is, it doesn’t feel like it, and that’s the most important consideration. Perhaps change is the wrong word. Perhaps evolve is more appropriate. While Fernie has seen a lot of growth, it’s been growth in quality… continually enhanced recreational opportunities, unique businesses increasing the diversity of what’s on offer here, an array of events taking place and being added to throughout the calendar year, developments and renovations adding to Fernie’s character and charm, organizations expanding their reach. While this evolution has taken place, Fernie is still Fernie at its core… the people, the values, the pride, the sense of community, the recreational pursuits. It’s all right here, and it just keeps getting better with age. Just like the Fix. And we hope that during your stay in Fernie, you find yourself agreeing… on both accounts! Welcome to Fernie. We promise it won’t disappoint and anticipate you wanting to come back for more. And until then, you can keep up to date on its evolution through FernieFix.com.

Location: Southeast corner of British Columbia, Canada, the only city-class municipality in Canada that is fully encircled by the Rocky Mountains. Just 45 minutes from both the Alberta and US borders. Population: 4,448 permanent residents with an additional 2,000 outside city limits and a substantial seasonal population in both winter and summer. Snowfall: Situated in the Elk Valley, Fernie has its own microclimate with approximately 360 cm of snow in town and 875 cm on the hill. Temperature: Average temperature is –11 C in the winter. The Griz: Fernie’s powder legend that points his musket to the clouds to promote snowfall from the skies. The Ghostrider: Located on Mt. Hosmer, a distinctive image of a horse and rider rumoured to be the ghost of an angry Aboriginal Chief and his daughter pursuing William Fernie. Best seen as the sun sets, but more noticeable in summer. Fernie Alpine Resort: Previously known as Fernie Snow Valley, is going into its 55th season! Catskiing: Fernie is home to Island Lake Catskiing, which celebrated 25 years a few years ago, and Fernie Wilderness Adventures, celebrating 30 years! Festivals: Fernie’s biggest winter festival is Griz Days, in honour of the Griz and the amazing champagne powder Fernie is known for. Held over the first weekend in March, this is an event not to be missed. Additionally, there are multiple Film Fests (read “Fernie Really Loves Film” in this guide), a Nordic festival called Winter Fest and the Biennial Lantern Festival that round out the cultural feel of Fernie winters.

WINTER 2016/17 › RECREATION

RECREATION This is probably what brought you to our front door – the recreational opportunities. The endless videos and pictures filled with smiling, snow-covered faces enjoying heaps of powder, on skis, on boards, snowmobiles, bikes or shoes. Welcome to Fernie, home of the Griz…of powder Tuesdays (and Wednesdays… and most other days). Each year brings more options, making it difficult to experience it all, even as a resident. Rest assured, it will all still be here the next time you come. So make your choices wisely, enjoy what you can of this winter wonderland at your feet…. And make sure to book that next trip as soon as possible to decrease your fomo (fear of missing out) between now and then.

STEVE KLOEPZIG ACMG SKI GUIDE

I had the pleasure of being raised in Deep Cove on the North Shore of Vancouver. Our family belonged to the Tyrol Ski and Mountain Club, so every Friday we would load up the Rambler station wagon and head up to Whistler for a weekend of skiing. This was back when only the south side was running and the village North was still a garbage dump. Early pre-high school, we were introduced to the sport of mountain biking and started riding all the hiking trails on Mt Seymour and any other trail or power line that looked like fun. Like a lot of Canadian boys, playing hockey was a major part of my life and I did play major junior in the WHL and played a season in Europe, but I always knew that I would come back to my first love… “Playing in the Mountains.” I was tree planting in the South Country near lake Koocanusa in the summer of ‘93 and every four days would come into Fernie to do laundry and bike one of the three to four bike trails that existed at that time. After about four trips to town, I finally asked a local where the ski hill was, we stepped out of Cappuccino Corner on Second Ave. and he said, “It’s right there.” That was pretty much it; I knew that this is where I wanted to live. I tented in the Island Lake parking lot with my dog for about four or five weeks until I found a house to buy. I enjoyed the next five years ski bumming and building a few mountain bike trails, including Ich Bin Sofa, O’Deer and The Watering Hole. My mom eventually asked me, what do you plan on doing when you grow up? She was

not very happy when I told her that I was going to do some courses and become a ski guide. I told her of all the great memories I had during my Whistler days and felt that it was something I could share and introduce other people to, playing in the mountains. So on I went for the next five years doing lots of ski touring, some big mountain traverses and a ski trip to France and Alaska. I also started working at Island Lake Lodge as a tail guide. Then I started challenging different guide programs: Canadian Ski Guide Association through Mike Wiegele’s Heli Skiing, and then eventually I went into the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides program and achieved my full ski guide certification. I have now been guiding at Island Lake and other mechanized operations for close to 19 years, and look forward to continuing to take people touring in the mountains to teach them how to move safely, efficiently and enjoy the beauty of the backcountry. I really hope our town continues to grow with the year-round recreational tourism industry, and that all the artisan shops, whether it’s Art, Chocolatier or Beer continue to flourish. Q. Fernie’s best kept secret… A. Heiko’s Mountain Lake and Heaven’s Gate trails. The views are incredible and to think that an 80-something-year-old guy built them, it’s incredible. He is trail building royalty.

NICK NAULT PHOTO Email me at kloepzig@telus.net for more information on backcountry tours this winter. Q. My preferred way to explore Fernie is… A. By bike. Q. The community of Fernie is known for changing visitors to residents because… A. The good vibe and community feel, all of the great fun outdoor things to do, and the beautiful views from anywhere in town. Q. The perfect way to spend an evening in Fernie is… A. A slack country tour off 2000 face and skiing a couple of steep couloirs with buddies, followed by taking the family for a tasty Yamagoya feast, and finished off with a cuddle on the couch with my girls watching Finding Dory.

BEST-LOVED WINTER WONDERS BY JESSE BELL

WHETHER YOU HAVE LIVED HERE FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS OR ARE SPENDING YOUR FIRST WINTER IN THIS STUNNING MOUNTAIN TOWN, THERE ARE LIKELY MANY THINGS THAT YOU HAVE NEVER DONE AND MANY PLACES YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN. ›››

Perhaps you’ve never snowshoed to the lower Matheson Falls on a frosty morning, or hurtled down Montane’s steep hills on your Nordic dork cross-country skis after dark. Thankfully, you have an entire beautiful winter to explore. With just a little push from friends, or at the very least a friendly suggestion from a local on the street, you may just find yourself at Thunder Meadows Cabin or on a backcountry ski tour. However far outside your comfort level you are willing to leap, here are a few suggestions to aid in your ever-growing, adventure-seeking winter here in Fernie. TRAIL RUNNING – Many people assume that the second the snow starts to fly, the running shoes go into hibernation. Luckily for you, Fernie’s summer bike trails transform into a winter wonderland and most of the routes are fully runnable. Be sure to watch for winter bikers (fat bikes come out of hibernation in winter) and hit the trails at the Fernie Provincial Park,

Ridgemont, or Montane. Look for The Tears & Gears Winter Wheezer for a more competitive take on winter trail running and find yourself a nice pair of yaktrax to stabilize those slippery feet. Best-loved: Run in the early morning up Uprooted to the Montane Hut, just in time for sunrise to hit the snowy peaks of the Lizard Range. SNOWSHOEING – There is nothing better than a cup of steaming hot chocolate below an icy waterfall on a late afternoon in January, unless that hot chocolate also has Baileys. A pair of snowshoes is a great way to change up an otherwise dreary winter day. Break your own snowshoe trail virtually anywhere – the forest is yours to explore. Best-loved: Take a drive down Coal Creek Rd. to the Matheson Creek drainage and snowshoe upstream to the first set of waterfalls. The bubbling creek is a welcoming sound and on the coldest days the waterfall is a collection of icy pillars pleasing to the eye.

WINTER 2016|17 › RECREATION

JESSE BELL PHOTOS ICE SKATING – The Fernie Memorial Arena is fantastic for skating but when you want to avoid the rowdy crowds at the Fernie Ghostriders games there is nothing better than a casual glide along smooth lake ice. Your biggest decision will be where to go. Maiden Lake at the west-end of town freezes beautifully in November – it makes for fun hockey scrimmages or an after-work skate in the warm sun. The Annex Park duck pond is a sometimes quieter option. If you are up for the challenge almost any mountain lake offers a special skate. Best-loved: Drive to nearby Silver Springs and hike the short hill below fallen leaves to the lake, where you can glide along the beautiful green, crystal-clear ice with a thermos of tea. Just be sure to pack out whatever you bring with you – this place is sacred. SKIING – If you’ve come this far it’s because you love snow. Fortunately, not only do we have Fernie Alpine Resort nearby, there are also two incredible cat skiing operations (Island Lake Lodge and Fernie Wilderness Adventures) and endless mountains at your fingertips for your skiing dreams. Head into the mountains for your own ski-tour adventure, just be sure you are experienced in backcountry travel – pack the right gear and provide a trip plan before you go. Bestloved: Gather a group of like-minded friends and rent the Thunder Meadows or Tunnel Creek cabin. Ski-tour by day with delicious eats, drinks and possibly even fireworks by night. NORDIC SKIING – I love Nordic-dorking. Sometimes you just need a change from the

an evening curling with friends last year and it was a delight. Located next to the Fernie Memorial Arena, the Fernie Curling Club at 961 6th Ave runs a fully licensed operation and is really as Canadian as you can get. Best-loved: Head for an early dinner at nearby Yamagoya or Curry Bowl first and then walk across the highway to throw some rocks down the ice. The good news is you don’t need to be good to curl, the better news is that you are guaranteed to have a good time.

fast pace of downhill skiing; cross country skiing is a great alternative. Almost any of Fernie’s trails along the Elk River are nordic friendly. If you seek something a little more exhilarating pack your skis and poles for Montane. The beautiful network of trails groomed on the regular offer something for everyone – from steep curves and climbs to gradual downhill with scenic views. Bestloved: Pack a backpack with drinks and a headlamp and head to the Montane Hut for a fire overlooking the valley. Then ski downhill with your headlamp for an exhilarating tear through the deep and dark woods. CURLING – Curling doesn’t come to mind when you ask me what we should do tonight, but for the first time in a long time I spent

ICE CLIMBING – I’ve never ice-climbed, though it is on my list. The Fernie area offers some great climbs for beginners with many nearby waterfalls freezing through the winter. Climbers Dana McMahon and Adam Bondi head to Morrissey Falls and Coal Creek, though all are weather dependent. The nearby Bull River, Crowsnest Pass and Waterton Lakes also have a variety of climbs. It is a sport not for the faint of heart, but is said to be exhilarating and calming all at once. Best-loved: To start, look for East Kootenay Climbing by Gord McArthur, or dig around for a copy of Climbs of the Canadian Rockies by Joe Josephson. Seek out a fellow climber or take a course in ice climbing, or tag along and watch the climbers do their thing. However you decide to spend your winter months here in Fernie, I hope you find a little adventure every day. Any heart-pumping, sweat-inducing activity makes snuggling up beneath a wooly blanket on your couch at the end of the day that much more enjoyable.

WINTER 2016|17 › RECREATION

HOCKEY NIGHT IN FERNIE BY SARA MOULTON

CANADA’S FAVOURITE PASTIME, THE FASTEST GAME ON ICE… WHATEVER CLICHÉ YOU CHOOSE, FERNIE’S OWN FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS SHINE BRIGHTEST WHEN THE GHOSTRIDERS ARE PLAYING AT HOME. THERE’S SOMETHING INEXPLICABLY SPECIAL ABOUT OUR SMALL-TOWN SPIRIT THAT MAKES THE MEMORIAL ARENA ONE OF THE MOST ENTERTAINING PLACES TO WATCH SOME HOCKEY. ››› Just take a glance around the rink and notice the mixture of fans. At peak-season, more than 1,100 spectators (and occasionally an errant rooster) fill the barn with an energy that rivals any professional sports event. A Ghostriders game is the perfect entertainment option for everyone, whether you’re seeking family-friendly fun for youngsters or the beginning of a big night out with friends. The club has been a fixture in Fernie since 1991, competing at the Junior A level before finding a niche within the Junior B Kootenay International Junior Hockey League in 2004. A notorious rivalry exists between the Riders and the Kimberley Dynamiters, though duals with the Creston Valley Thunder Cats have also become increasingly feisty. The league primarily features players between the ages of 17 and 20, most of whom relocate from their hometowns. Craig Mohr, the head coach and general manager, will tell you that Fernie’s natural beauty and laidback lifestyle are major drawcards for his big-city talent. You may even see players volunteering at events or helping out at the Legion and Rocky Mountain Village. In 2016-17, 22 regular season games will be held at the Fernie Memorial Area, plus one each at the Sparwood Leisure Centre and Elkford Recreation Centre. The on-ice action is fierce and competitive, there’s 50/50 draws and a puck toss, and refreshment needs are

covered by a concession stand and Fernie Brewing Company. Tickets are available at the door or take advantage of meal and ticket specials at locations such as The Pub or Max Restaurant. Even if you’re not a huge hockey fan, you’re sure to have a good time. Look for the yellow signs around town on game days and come down to see what all the fuss is about! Q. Who should spectators be watching out for this year on the ice? A. I can’t play favourites, as I think everyone on the team is a star! But if I had to pick, I’d say Aidan Wilson (#22) for being highly skilled and dynamic offensively, Brandon Butler (#40) as starting goalie after two prior seasons as backup, and of course, captain Alex Cheveldave (#23) for being a scary and powerful force on the blue line while providing leadership for the entire team. Q. Why do you think the Ghostriders games have become such a popular winter season event? A. It’s such a great atmosphere, even if you’re not much of a hockey fan. During some of the biggest games, the energy booms around the arena and you can’t help but get drawn in. Kids love the fast action and there’s beer for the grown-ups. The crowd size and enthusiasm are the envy of the other teams in the league – it’s amazing to get such support in a town the size of Fernie.

SARA MOULTON PHOTO Q. What are the best results the Fernie Ghostriders have enjoyed since beginning in 1991? A. The 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons resulted in back-to-back league championships and they won silver at the Cyclone Taylor Cup (the BC Junior B championship) when Fernie hosted the event in 2011. Since joining the KIJHL in 2004, they have never missed the playoffs and have frequently proceeded to at least the third round. That’s a pretty good record for any club. Q. What is your role with the team, what do you enjoy most about it, and how long have you been involved? A. Like so many others behind the scenes, I’m a proud volunteer and unapologetic super-fan! As a new Aussie expat, I was tasked with covering the team for the local newspaper during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons – despite never having watched a hockey game – and the generosity and spirit of the organization has kept me helping wherever I can. Most of all, I enjoy learning the stories behind the club’s characters and being trusted to share in the emotionally charged moments of success and defeat. For more information on the Fernie Ghostriders including the schedule, visit FernieGhostriders.com.

IT’S THAT GO-TO PLACE ON THE MOUNTAIN ON A POWDER DAY THAT NEVER DISAPPOINTS. OR, IT COULD BE THAT SPECIAL PLACE AFTER A POWDER DAY HAS COME AND GONE WHERE YOU KNOW YOU’LL STILL FIND SOME GREAT POWDER TURNS. ››› Most of us have a few secret stashes in our back pocket, and depending on the weather, the crowds, and what’s open, we’ll head in to a certain stash. Sometimes even passing by what looks like an amazing line, because we know that where we’re headed is (hopefully) even more amazing. It’s a personal thing, but perhaps we can find a few folks willing to share – at least a little bit…

FIX FAVOURITES: ROUTES TO EXPLORE THIS WINTER BY KRISTA TURCASSO

KYLE HAMILTON PHOTO

WITH SO MANY ACTIVITIES AND COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF TRAIL OPTIONS FOR EACH, IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO MAKE A DECISION WHEN IT COMES TO EXPLORING THE EXTENSIVE WILDERNESS THAT BRANCHES OUT ON ALL SIDES OF THE VALLEY. WE KNOW THE FEELING, SO EACH YEAR WE PROVIDE SOME OF OUR FAVOURITES TO HELP YOU OUT. HERE IS THIS YEAR’S LIST. FOR MORE OPTIONS, VISIT FERNIEFIX.COM AND SEE OUR “FIX FAVOURITES” TAB. AND ABOVE ALL ELSE, HAVE FUN! ››› NORDIC SKIING This sport has taken off in recent years. With the formation of the Fernie Nordic Society and it being a member of the Fernie Trails Alliance, additions like the Elk Valley Nordic Centre and the new warming hut have expanded the kilometres of Nordic trails available and created programs including kids lessons, adult lessons, and a racing team. This organization has also increased Fernie’s profile as a Nordic skiing destination through numerous events, including the Annual Winterfest, a two-day affair with a Kootenay Cup race and the popular Winter Wheezer event. New this year are Little Critter races, Toonie Races, and multiple Full Moon Ski and Socials.

Not surprisingly, with this increased attention and interest other areas have been developed – including Montane, which has quickly become a hub for multi-purpose recreation whether on Nordic skis – snowshoes, running shoes or fat bike. Fernie Alpine Resort has also tied into the Elk Valley Nordic Centre, which creates a whole new level of opportunity… and this year’s Nordic recommendation. Route: Elk Valley Nordic Centre to Fernie Alpine Resort Distance: 7km + Difficulty: Intermediate Estimated Time: 1-3 Hours

Last winter, I began skate skiing. I grew up on classic skis, which I still love, but I was interested in this sport taking Fernie by storm. A few friends had suggested riding from the Nordic Centre to Fernie Alpine Resort, having snacks and a few refreshments at the Cirque Restaurant, and then either heading home or having someone pick us up. It was a fantastic adventure! Starting at the Nordic Centre, stay right at all junctions. On the Galloway Loop, you will see a sign directing you to turn right to head to Fernie Alpine Resort. WINTER 2016|17 › RECREATION Chair. From there, it’s just a short distance to the Lizard Creek Lodge, should you wish to enjoy a snack and refreshment. You have the option of heading back to the Nordic Centre (stay right once reaching Galloway, to complete the Nordic Centre loop) or catching a ride back to town. See Nordic Centre map on page 76 for directions. Suggestion: For those keen on a bigger day, consider doing the Fernie Alpine Resort short (Silk Trail) or long (Silk and Scandia Trails) loop before heading back to the Nordic Centre trails!

SNOW SHOEING There is just something about the muffled sounds of deep, powdery snow beneath a pair of snowshoes while making your way to one of Fernie’s fantastic viewpoints. Personally, I enjoy snowshoeing best when the path is untracked (just like skiing!). It may be more effort, but it is also amazing to see where a pair of snowshoes, which are estimated at having been invented over 4,000 years ago, will take you! The options are endless, really. So, let’s get off the beaten path, why don’t we? Wait for that beautiful snowfall (and perhaps a shred at Fernie Alpine Resort), and then hit the mountains. Route: Hyper Extension Distance: 8km + Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced Estimated Time: 2-3 Hours

START

In the summer of 2016, Stag Leap held its first King of the Castle running race, which took this exact route up to the top of Castle Mountain. Starting at the parking area adjacent to the River Road and Coal Creek Junction, hook a left after the bridge crossing Coal Creek and meander through the woods on this climb, which quickly gains elevation. You have choices here. Once you reach the top of Roots Extension, you can stay right and take Resurrection back down to River Road, which is the shortest loop. Second option, is once at the top of Hyper Extension, enjoy the view and turn back the way you

came or take Hyper Ventilation down to River Road. Alternatively, climb to the top of Castle Rocks, as the King or Queen of the Castle, enjoy that deserved hot chocolate and snack, and come back the way you came or detour left down Hyper Ventilation. This is such a beautiful area to take in the views of the Valley, so whichever route you choose, we promise it will be worth the grunt!

FAT BIKING I am what you might call an avid mountain biker. I love it, and while I enjoy all seasons in Fernie, I can barely wait for spring and the recon missions to discover which trails are rideable. Hello, my name is Krista and I am a bike addict. So, it comes to a big surprise to many that I do not own a fat bike. I often wonder myself, but then I realize that once I try it, I’m doomed… and so is my family. Instead of sacrificing my beloved family, I reached out to one of Fernie’s most passionate fat bikers Angela Etheridge of the Fernie Mountain Bike Club, and this was her recommendation. Route: Cemetery Bypass – Kiddy Up – Queen V – Eco Terrorist – Deafall – Broken Derailleur – Sidewinder Distance: 6 km Difficulty: Intermediate Estimated Time: 1-2 hours Start just above town at the entrance to the Cemetery, by taking Cemetery Bypass trail. START Continue to Kiddy Up, then connect to Queen V. From here, follow Eco Terrorist through the woods and along the snow-covered boardwalks back to the main road, where you will veer left and take Deadfall until the Four Corners. From here, turn left and take Broken Derailleur and Sidewinder all the way down until the trail meets Old Stumpy. This loop will be regularly groomed throughout the winter by the FMBC, so big thanks to this crew of dedicated individuals!

TRAIL RUNNING Once I discovered the sport of mountain biking, my running shoes were quickly side lined. As my time became more constrained I realized that running is a great bang for your buck, so I began exploring trail running in winter. I found that snowshoers would pack down the trails perfectly for running, bought some waterproof runners and a pair of gaiters, and winter has never been the same. I really enjoyed this new version of a sport I had long forgotten. Reaching a snowy summit mid-winter and seeing a view you’ve seen countless times covered in a white, pillowy blanket, in the peace and quiet of a winter day, is an exhilarating experience. Plus, the way down is great fun and it’s a lot easier on your body! Now, with more people out on the trails, whether on snowshoes or fat bikes, there are countless options out there and my postholing days are behind me.

START

Route: Lazy Lizard Trail Distance: 7 km + Difficulty: Intermediate Estimated Time: 1-2 hours This is a fantastic run, and a route that is often snowshoed during the winter months, which makes it great for running! From town, drive West along Hwy 3 and take a right turn towards the Mount Fernie Provincial Park. Continue driving until you reach the lower Island Lake parking lot. The trail runs along the right side of the cat road, and there are signs along the way. You can run part way up and back, or all the way to the lodge which is 7km one way. The bonus is, if you decide to run Thursday through Sunday you can enjoy lunch and the beautiful views offered from the lodge… even a spa treatment and a cat ride back down. The key is – book ahead of time.

SNOWMOBILING IN FERNIE BY NICOLE MATEI

NICOLE MATEI PHOTO

THE FERNIE SNOWMOBILE ASSOCIATION (FSA) HAS BEEN THE VOICE FOR ORGANIZED SNOWMOBILING IN THE ELK VALLEY SINCE 1990. THIS VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION WORKS DILIGENTLY WITH GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE LANDOWNERS TO SECURE ACCESS TO BACKCOUNTRY TERRAIN IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING SERVICES AND AMENITIES FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF TRAIL USERS INCLUDING SLEDDERS, NORDIC SKIERS, SNOWSHOERS, FAT-BIKERS, AND SKI-TOURERS. ››› The core 160km trail network is groomed twice a week (Thursdays and Saturday evenings); in fact, over 5,600 km of grooming was performed last season alone! The FSA also manages a detailed trail signage and map program covering five distinct riding areas spread over thousands of acres, three warming cabins, and collaborates with agencies to promote local tourism and healthy outdoor recreation opportunities for residents. Several special events are held through the season including the action-packed Sled Drag Races, social rides, and backcountry BBQs. Check out Ferniesnowmobile.com for more info.

KEY INFORMATION

SUGGESTED RIDES

Day passes are available for purchase at trailheads for $25 (funds collected directly support the grooming program). All off-road vehicles in BC require provincial registration and insurance; passes and plates must be visible at all times. The Elk Valley has several access management areas established to protect wildlife corridors, sensitive ecosystems and to provide opportunities for non-motorized recreation areas. Be sure to check the RDEK regional access management maps available online before you head out exploring.

Rolling Hills: One of Fernie’s most popular and easily accessible riding areas. From the Coal Creek staging area, travel 16km up a groomed trail to reach the well-equipped Rolling Hills cabin. Great out and back trip for families. Open terrain immediately behind the cabin suitable for intermediate riders to play in or continue South on the groomed trail through the Rolling Hills to access more playzones and the Wrangler’s Cabin.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS With the abundance of recreation, comes the abundance of practitioners working to provide balance, help with injury prevention, and work with rehabilitation. Being such a sought after area, Fernie draws qualified and passionate professionals in this industry, as they too want to enjoy the many recreational activities, quiet lifestyle and beautiful views this town has to offer. Maybe you are interested in a relaxing massage, or require physio therapy for a nagging injury. Perhaps it’s a facial you are after, or you want to keep up with your yoga regime or weight training. SPA MANAGER AT KING FIR SPA I came to Fernie for the first time eleven years ago to experience North American powder – it was everything I had imagined it would be! The trip planted a seed in my mind about immigrating to Canada; six years later, while living in the UK, my partner and I received our letter that invited us to move here. Feeling a little nostalgic, we thought we would visit Fernie first to bring back old memories. I never thought we would fall in love with the place so quickly. Before we knew it we had purchased a house – which feels like we have been renovating forever – and we got married at Island Lake Lodge. I truly feel like Fernie is home for us! I first trained as a Massage Therapist in 1998 (showing my age now). Admittedly, I had a few years of breaks from my career between then and now, as I went on to become a Sports Therapist in London, UK. Two years ago after living in Fernie I became the Manager at King Fir Spa on the mountain, and this is where I am today. I am also in the process of gaining my Canadian qualification as a BC Registered Massage Therapist, which I am very excited about. I really enjoy my job because I love the different people I get to meet daily. Everyone has a story, and the people in this area really understand the importance of taking care of your body. PLAY YOUR BEST THIS WINTER

Wall Squat

BY TARA HATCH THE WINTER SPORT SEASON IS HERE, AND I KNOW EVERYONE IS EXCITED! THIS YEAR MIGHT BE THE YEAR YOU B-LINE CORNER POCKET FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR CROSS-COUNTRY SKI UP TO ISLAND LAKE LODGE. TO PLAY YOUR BEST THIS WINTER SEASON, I WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT A FEW BASIC EXERCISES THAT WILL HELP WITH INJURY PREVENTION AND KEEP YOU ON THE MOUNTAIN. ››› We should never take our critical joints for grated. Of course we don’t want to get injured, but we tend to not think about our joints until we get hurt. So, let’s do all we can to prevent injuries from happening. Knees. Oh, those knees. If you have knee problems, listen up. If you don’t have knee problems, still listen up! Stretch and strengthen. The most common problems with knees are pain under the kneecap (patella) or on the joint line. Try these simple exercises and stretches to help prevent knee injuries. IT Band Stretch: No one likes this, but it’s a beauty. A tight IT band might pull your kneecap off-centre, causing knee pain. To do this exercise, start with a soft foam roller and roll from the outside hip to knee. Remember, pain usually means tightness, so don’t give up. Start up and down slowly and the more you do this, the better your knee will feel. Start with 5-10 times on each side daily. IT Band Stretch

Gluteus Medius and Vastus Medialis Oblique (VMO) Strengthening These are big ugly names for two very small but important muscles. These muscles can be weak because there are bigger muscles around them to usually take over. Glut Med

is located in your buttock area, under the big Glut Max. The VMO is located on the inside of your knee just above your kneecap. Two great exercises to work on these muscles are wall squats with a ball between your knees, and the clamshell. Wall Squats: For your VMO, Start at a wall with either a squishy ball or folded pillow between your knees. Your feet should be positioned 6-12 inches out in front of your body, feet hip-width apart with toes facing forward or slightly turned out. Slide down the wall to 90 degrees and squeeze your knees together. There should never be any pain in this exercise. If there is pain, stop and just stand at the wall and focus on squeezing your knees together. Try two sets of 15 reps daily. Clamshells: For your Glut Med, we are going to take it back to the Jane Fonda era. Sweatbands and leotard are optional! Lie on your left side on the floor, with your hips and knees bent at 45 degrees. Your right leg should be on top of your left leg, heels together. Keeping your feet in contact with each other, raise your right knee as high as you can without moving your pelvis. Squeeze your right buttock then slowly put your right leg down. Don’t allow your left leg to move off the floor. Try two sets of 15 reps for each leg daily.

Clamshells

3 - Recovery

Sometimes you can work hard on strengthening and stretching your muscles and you still need a little bit more help. Look into a knee brace, available at Fluid Motion Therapy to not only give you that extra support but also give you that added confidence to do your best this winter.

WINTER 2016|17 › ARTS AND CULTURE

ARTS AND CULTURE The arts and culture scene in Fernie is steadily on the rise. It is an integral part of our community, this love for music, art, and history. It brings people together, it invites people to be a part of Fernie, and it is something that we are all very proud of. Just take a look at the hubs of life and entertainment in town. The Fernie Arts Station, Fernie Museum, Heritage Library, and Vogue Theatre. They all exist in beautifully restored historical buildings that have such rich stories. Even the popular bars in the downtown, The Royal, Infinitea, Northern, Fernie and Brickhouse, offer amazing atmosphere and history to your experience. And to top it off, artist studios pepper the town, and the walls of many cafés and businesses are coloured with the impressive works of local artists. Enjoy the cultural side of Fernie while here, spend time in one of these spaces or attend one of the many events taking place during your stay.

its new time and day (The first Sunday of the month at 5pm), as well as the Banff Mountain Film Festival, The Warren Miller Ski Shows, The I4 Fly Fishing Film Fest, The Canadian Reel Film Fest, The FAST Film Fest and the various other programs and fundraisers along the way. For the latest information regarding our upcoming programs you can go to our website Ferniemovies.com or like us on facebook at voguetheatreferniebc.

THE VOGUE THEATRE We had always envisioned raising our family in a small alpine town, enjoying life outdoors. Upon arriving in Fernie for the first time we knew that it was the “where” and now had to work on the “how.” We starting by purchasing our first home in Fernie to get our feet wet and spent our weekends and holidays enjoying the multitude of outdoor pursuits. Before we knew it, we were spending most of our free time here and the idea of making it a permanent move was inevitable. In the summer of 2007, my wife and I closed on the purchase of the Vogue Theatre, not so coincidently the very day the popcorn machine caught fire. It was our long-term plan to settle in the community of Fernie and the theatre seemed like the perfect vehicle to accomplish our desire to be engaged in the business and arts community, as well, it seemed like a fun business to run, with loads of potential. Our long-term plan to tap this potential involved a wholesale renovation of the building (which was completed in 2009), the construction of a party room/arcade (which was completed in 2010), a complete equipment change including projection and sound (which was completed in 2011), new seats (which were installed one year ago) and lastly a new marquee on the front of the building which we hope to get in the next few years… When we first purchased the business, the shoulder seasons were really tough and we

Q. Fernie’s best kept secret… V. CROOME PHOTO would often joke with other business owners about riding the Fernie rollercoaster, where some months were a total write off and others made you feel like a real business. Almost ten years later and despite all of the new ways to download movies, we have seen a steady year-over-year increase in patronage and the shoulder season slowdown is not nearly as dramatic as it used to be. I expect this trend to continue as more and more people discover the area and all that it has to offer. We are always pleased to see the town busy with visitors, but we feel blessed to be so well supported by the Fernie locals and the great number of folks from Elko, Sparwood and Elkford that come to see us on a weekly basis. The arts and cultural community in Fernie is strong and diverse and we are proud to play our roll in it. Despite the challenges we face from our film distributors, we are pleased to continue to show exceptional alternative programming; like Indie Films Fernie, now on

A. It may or may not be the “very exclusive” monthly poker games hosted in the Arcade room of the Theatre. Q. My preferred way to explore Fernie is… A. On 2 wheels… I am consistently amazed by the variety and quality of the Fernie trail system. The dedication of the trail maintenance volunteers is really something special. Q. The community of Fernie is known for changing visitors to residents because… A. The lifestyle is really hard to beat. Once you become immersed in it, it’s hard to imagine living any other way. Q. The perfect way to spend an evening in Fernie is… A. What could be a more perfect ending to a busy day playing outside than having a warm butter topped bag of theatre popcorn, a comfy seat and a great film on the big screen?

WINTER 2016|17 › ARTS AND CULTURE

FERNIE REALLY LOVES FILM BY COURTNEY BAKER

PEOPLE IN FERNIE ARE A HARDY POPULATION. THEY ATTEND OUTDOOR EVENTS IN -30 TEMPERATURES AND STAY FOR HOURS AND THEY WILL DANCE IN JANUARY RAIN UNTIL THE MUSIC STOPS BUT HAVING SAID THAT THEY ALSO REALLY LIKE THEIR INDOOR PURSUITS COME DAYS WHEN IT IS DARK AT 5PM. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS WHY THE ALREADY VIBRANT ARTS AND CULTURE SCENE IS BUOYED IN WINTER WITH AN AMAZING ARRAY OF FILM FESTIVALS AND WEEKLY AND MONTHLY SCREENINGS OF THE BEST THAT CINEMA HAS TO OFFER. ››› Kicking off a season of film in Fernie is Indie Films Fernie (IFF). IFF is organized by a dedicated group of volunteer cinephiles who work to bring you challenging independent films that will make you think, laugh, cry and then discuss, and runs September through April as a program of the Arts Station. Going strong for over a decade IFF works with the Toronto International Film Festival to ensure that residents and visitors alike are given the opportunity to take in award-winning independent films that may not receive the exposure of Hollywood blockbusters. Indie Films Fernie screenings take place at the Vogue Theatre on the first Sunday of the month at 5pm and are often sold out so make sure you arrive early! Next up November 5 at the Community Centre is the Fernie Ski and Board Film Fest. Held the same weekend as the FAST Ski Swap, this festival is a fundraiser for the Canadian Ski Patrol. Locally, the CSP consists of over 30 members who provide 400+ days of volunteer patrol services in Fernie and Elkford to ensure we are kept safe while pursuing our passions. Screening a selection films including Ruin and Rose, Tight Loose, and The Fourth Phase, with a great selection of prizes, awesome food and drink all in support of an amazing organization, the Fernie Ski and Board Film Fest is the perfect way to kick off winter. Located just off Victoria Avenue is Infinitea; a warm, friendly place where you are sure to find arts offerings of all sorts. While they often have live music or workshops to accompany their delicious food and beverages, during the winter months they also have free screenings of classic films

get you through the winter with its hospitality, fantastic organizers, stunning films and enthusiasm for all things Canadian!

ANDREW RICHARDS PHOTO/REEL FILM FEST every Monday from December to April. To accompany your viewing pleasure on their comfy couches they offer free popcorn and $6 meals. New this year are theme nights with prizes for best costume amongst others. We all know that costume making is one of Fernie’s favourite pastimes, so check out this awesome arts venue for an evening of film amongst friends! Back for its 9th year is the Reel Canadian Film Fest (RCFF) on January 20-22. A perennial favourite, the RCFF is dedicated to the talent and diversity of the Canadian film industry and over the course of the weekend hosts opening and closing galas as well as screens five feature films, a children’s program, a multitude of film shorts and offers prizes galore. Operating under the Arts Station, the RCFF is proud to provide Fernie with the opportunity to view the year’s best Canadian films including Englishand French-language offerings, as well as documentaries. Primarily taking place at the Vogue Theatre this film festival is sure to help

Rounding out the festivals is the Fernie Mountain Film Festival (FMFF) February 24-25. Going strong since 2007, this festival is, “dedicated to filmmakers who spark awareness of mountain cultures, fragile environments, and the passion and perseverance of global explorers,” – clearly a match to the ideals that Fernie holds dear to its heart. Kicking off the weekend is the very popular Mountain Social. Dinner and drinks before a film, yes please! Selected films are offered both Friday and Saturday night with a free Children’s Matinee on Saturday afternoon. A highlight of the FMFF is the awarding of the Mountain Culture Award, given to those who have made significant contributions to the fabric of local mountain culture. Fernie has a booming cultural scene as you can tell by simply walking down 2nd Avenue and taking in works by our amazing artists at a myriad of shops and galleries. We also have a love of music as evidenced by the extremely talented musicians showcased at any of the bars, restaurants and theatres in town. But film? We clearly love film! It helps get us through long winter nights and inspires us to hit the slopes the next morning. It allows us to glimpse the other side of the world and invites dialogue in bars after leaving the theatre. Most importantly, it lets us experience life creatively through the eyes and heart of its makers, inviting us to think, laugh, weep or reflect on what connects us regardless of what passion we pursue or corner of the world we inhabit.

BOOK SOME TIME IN FERNIE BY CAROLYN NIKODYM

THERE IS NO QUESTION, FERNIE LOCALS AND VISITORS LOVE BEING OUTSIDE. WHETHER IT’S SITTING IN A HOT TUB AND LOOKING AT THE THREE SISTERS DECKED IN SNOW-WHITE DRESSES OR IT’S BOMBING DOWN A TRAIL ON PLANKS OR FAT TIRES, ENJOYING THE OUTDOORS IS PART OF THE FERNIE DNA. ›››

OOLICHAN FICTION

KRISSY MATHEWS HAS RETURNED.

“Mountain Girl is a thrilling romp that teems with recklessness, obsession, and desire.” Angie Abdou, author of The Bone Cage

Four years ago, the beautiful seventeen-year-old vanished in the forest near her home. Obsessed with solving the case, a young hotshot detective has hunted her relentlessly.

Now she bursts through the door of her hometown’s hospital, a lifeless child in her arms and a man she refers to as her husband by her side. The police pry Jasper Ryan from her grasp and charge him with kidnapping. Her family has been through hell, the detective wants answers, and no one understands her feelings for Jasper.

Gripped by Stockholm Syndrome, Krissy attempts to defend her kidnapper, but cracks form in her selective memory of the years she spent in captivity. She is forced to question what she thought was true love, borne of the twisted abuse she suffered while isolated in a mountain cabin. She is torn between the captor who fathered her child and the handsome detective who will stop at nothing to lock him up. Mountain Girl is a wicked, turbulent, thrill ride that will keep you guessing until the final page is turned.

Jon Turk If you want to know what it would be like to kayak and ski around Ellesmere Island, look no further than Crocodiles and Ice: A Journey into Deep Wild, published in September 2016. Over 100 days, Jon Turk and his adventuring partner Erik Boomer kayaked Arctic waters or pulled their heavy kayaks on skis around the island to travel some 1500 miles. Jon was in his sixties at the time. National Geographic named Turk and Boomer a couple of the Top Ten Adventurers of 2012 for this tremendous and dangerous undertaking. However, Crocodiles and Ice is more than just an adventure book. It also sparks the imagination of a big and beautiful natural world. It entreats us to look past the stuff that tethers us to modern existence, to find our personal edge and push past it, because only then do we truly understand our selves and our place in the world. His storytelling is dynamic and colourful and cannot help but inspire. And if you ever have the opportunity to see him speak anywhere in North America, do it! He’ll have you not only laughing, but also reconsidering the dreams you’ve let fade.

Shelby Cain For a fun and engaging read, pick up a copy of Mountain Girl. Warning: you may skip out on other Fernie offerings because you won’t be able to put this book down. The novel tells the story of Krissy, who disappeared from her small mountain Shelby Cain town at 17. Four years later she re-emerges with a small child and a husband. When she rushes her sick child into her hometown hospital, her husband is arrested for her kidnapping. Mountain Girl, published over the summer, gives a very real sense of the Stockholm syndrome Krissy suffers from. At times, readers find themselves rooting for her kidnapper and wondering if her isolated life in the mountains with him was more idyllic than horrific. It’s an incredible feat by this first-time author. The book also features a cover with a painting by local artist Vanessa Croome. Shelby Cain

Some days, however, are made for curling up by a fire with a great book. From the thriving bookstore Polar Peek Books and Treasures and the beautiful library to a local publisher and local authors, Fernie has got you covered.

“Shelby Cain expertly brings Stockholm Syndrome to life, suffusing it with energy and profoundly unveiling its many dimensions. There are no easy answers in this twisted love story, and readers will find themselves falling head over heels for the villain. Cain’s confident execution is admirable. She says to readers, “you’ll never believe this!” and then makes us not only believe it but live it.

Mountain Girl is a fast-paced exploration of attraction and love that has much in common with psychological thrillers such as Gone Girl and The Silent Wife. I hope it will find as many readers. I know they, like me, will be unable to resist reading late into the night to finish Mountain Girl in a single sitting, morning meetings be damned!” ~ Angie Abdou

Angie Abdou Hometown hero and true champion of Canadian literature both in Fernie and across the nation, Angie Abdou has four books to her credit. She’s also quite prolific, so there is surely another book on the horizon. Between, her most recent novel published in 2014, tells the story of a couple uncomfortably grappling with adulthood. Their middle

class life, complete with good jobs, nice house, two kids, two cars, and unending busyness, has them tethered in a way that is wholly unsatisfying. To ease the burden, the couple decides to hire a nanny from the Philippines. Between unflinchingly exposes the tensions between entitled middle-class life and the foreign nanny who leaves her life behind, between “master” and “servant,” and between modern motherhood and modern womanhood. Abdou is also the author of The Bone Cage (2007), which was featured on CBC’s Canada Reads in 2010 and defended by Georges Laraque, The Canterbury Trail (2011), the story of strangers who all make their way to a backcountry cabin, and Anything Boys Can Do (2006), a collection of short stories. Gordon Sombrowski For a picture of Fernie before tourism, What Echo Heard, published in 2011, is a wonderful place to start. This collection of short stories uncovers all of the characters that gave Fernie its flavour before there was the Old-Side-New-Side debate. From loggers and miners to mayors and high-class ladies, What Echo Heard is Sombrowski’s love letter to the Fernie he grew up in, the Fernie that shaped him. It’s not all sunshine and lollipops, but it does lay a solid foundation for the authenticity Fernie still holds dear.

WINTER 2016|17 › SHOPPING

SHOPPING Making a commitment to support the local economy by shopping local is a pretty easy goal when living in or visiting Fernie. After spending an afternoon perusing the shops along 2nd Ave, you will know what I mean. Unique clothing and jewellery. Artistic accessories. Cool Fernie-ware. And all the plaid you need for this season’s wardrobe. Beyond fashion, there is also an abundance of stores offering art, books, children’s gifts and toys, sports gear and natural health. And to top it off, there are specialized stores that provide an impressive array of items such as cheese, essential oils, chocolate, bread and coffee. Now you understand, and hopefully you are including the Fernie shopping experience on your “to do” list for this year’s stay. Best of all, you’ll be armed with amazing gifts for those you left behind.

ANDY COE

GIV’ ER SHIRT WORKS In 2010 I decided I needed to travel, two years later I found myself in Canada for the winter season. Not long after that I met my husband, Jesse. Jesse was offered a job with Non-Stop here in Fernie for the following winter, a place I had never heard of, but was pleasantly surprised by its beauty and charm the moment we arrived. I remember coming in to Giv’ Er Shirt Works that winter with Jesse for his first print for And What Apparel and meeting Erin Summers, who said, “People come for winter, stay for summer and then never leave.” I thought nothing of it until summer was in full swing and realized she was right! I have been in retail on and off throughout my working life. I was drawn to fashion in my early 20s and enjoyed making every item my own. I then discovered that the retail industry was somewhere I could be creative and help others, two things I revel in. Over the past ten years I have seen the retail sector grow immensely, thanks to the Internet. I have to give a shout out to Fashion Bloggers, as they have really pushed the retail/fashion industry to reassess itself and take into account that fashion is for everyone, everywhere. Just over a month ago I came on board here at Giv’ Er as Account Manager/Retail Manager. This is a place where I can really help people customize their items to suit their

SUBMITTED PHOTO needs. Giv’ Er also has a great retail space. We are a blend of tourism with mountain town life. We sell a variety of items, from Fernie hoodies and hats to discs for the local Disc Golf course. I have been working with our team to create the winter 16/17 line, which I am really stoked about! It will be in store soon, check our Instagram for updates @givershirtworks. Q. Fernie’s best kept secret…

WINTER 2016|17 › FOOD AND DRINK

FOOD AND DRINK One of the things I most love about Fernie is its diverse culinary and libatious offerings. No matter the mood or craving or the time of day. Regardless of being with friends, family, or on your own. You will literally find something to suit just what you are looking for, just what the mood and occasion requires. Fernie features some of the best cuisine from around the world, pubs with menus that will keep you coming back for more, and cafés that provide hearty and wholesome food and beverages. It’s tough out there, folks. Choose your path wisely… or you’ll just have to come back to ensure you experience it all.

DANIEL WHILLANS THE VALLEY SOCIAL

I came to Fernie in October of 2014 with no job and nowhere to live. With Fernie being the anomaly that it is, those things were sorted within a matter of hours. I came in search of snow (which lacked hard that year) and had full intent on leaving come April to move back to the Ottawa Valley where I had planned to operate The Valley Social mobile trailer. After agreeing to see through the school year at The Fernie Academy, plans shifted when I realized how dope summer was and that this too was a valley and I could carry out my romanticized entrepreneurial mobile dreams. Obviously, after staying a summer I’m here for good – the saying is true. I became involved in the coffee industry solely and exclusively as a customer. Not a coffee snob as people often self-title but simply as someone who enjoyed good coffee and all the lovely stuff that could surround the hot drink. I later switched roles and broke into the coffee industry in 2015 with The Valley Social Mobile Espresso trailer that frequented Mountain Markets and the Elk Valley Guiding Company’s fly shop. With a love for hot gossip and good coffee this life path was seemingly inevitable. The Coffee Shop culture has nationally been rather diverse with massive chains and increasing amounts of small shops serving artisanal coffee in a caring way. I saw a small niche that was waiting to be filled in Fernie and with the help of a lot of great people took a stab at filling servings of java in a brick and mortar space on 2nd Ave.

SUBMITTED PHOTO I would love to see the coffee industry in this little town and everywhere really just keep serving dang good cups of coffee. Coffee discourse and culture can often be intimidating and it would be super lovely to see it continue to evolve in a social practice that promotes productive positive action. I see coffee as an enjoyable ritual-based catalyst to whatever the day brings. Q. Fernie’s best kept secret… A. The two for $5 white T-shirts at Canadian Tire.

Q. My preferred way to explore Fernie is… A. In a 4x4 chaulk full of good people. Q. The community of Fernie is known for changing visitors to residents because… A. It’s so dope. Q. The perfect way to spend an evening in Fernie is… A. A spicy dinner with good people, heaps of bourbon and red wine followed by a slow, moon-lit cross-country ski home.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS EAT BY SHELBY CAIN

IT’S SATURDAY MORNING. LAST NIGHT, I GOT MYSELF INTO A BIT OF A PICKLE. ON MY WAY TO THE GROCERY STORE TO SHOP FOR THE DINNER PARTY I’M HOSTING TONIGHT I ACCIDENTALLY FELT LIKE A MARGARITA. I HATE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS. ››› But when it does there’s only one place to go. Nevados. Their Habenero Cucumber Margarita is world class. A familiar face beckoned me in from the cold and before I knew it I was licking the delicious orange salt from the rim. Try not to order two. It’s impossible. So I joined the group like one of those animal fostering programs they attempt at the zoo. Me – the straggly grocery shopper, them – the stylish people-abouttown. It was an easy and successful latch. Suddenly I was two doors down from Nevados ordering up my favourite indulgent dinner. The Pickle Burger from The Northern. That’s right. A giant, succulent burger adorned with – wait for it – deep fried pickles! A match made in heaven. Now, I’m not sure if you know this or not but there is a bylaw in Fernie that states it is unlawful to consume a burger here without washing it down with a beverage from the Fernie Brewing Company. And nothing goes with the Pickle Burger better than a frosty P-9. So now I’m three drinks in, the grocery store is closed, and they’re pouring Vagabond Vodka across the street at The Valley Social. Yadayada-yada, it’s Saturday morning. I turn on the tap and lap up a couple litres of water because the combination of margarita salt and deep fried pickles leaves my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth. Now I’m hungry. And unfortunately, I have a Hubbard’s cupboard situation going on. Oops. Lucky for me I live in a town that takes yummy food almost as seriously as fresh pow and costume-themed traditions. Almost. First things first. Coffee. Now, here’s where

I wouldn’t dream of being without. I have back-up beans for the back-up beans. There are some great local roasters in our area that really care about your morning fix, including Crowsnest Coffee Company and Kootenay Roasting Company, to name a couple. Both are available at our local Save-On-Foods. Confession – I like to sip around a bit. I don’t pledge lifelong loyalties to anybean. Today, I grind up a little Bushtown Blend from Crowsnest and I’m good to go. Next, food. I’ve got to get something into my stomach so I can think straight, and then I have to think myself straight to the grocery store before my guests start arriving. A fleeting thought of ordering the Polar Peak Pizza from Elk Valley Pizza and being done with it flashes through my brain, but I quickly shoo it away. It’s awesome, but not tonight. Before my plans were completely derailed yesterday I managed to organize the pièce de résistance for dinner – a Cutter Ranch pasture raised, Berkshire pork roast. Cutter Ranch is located about forty-five minutes out of Fernie, but they deliver here on a weekly basis. Their meat is so extraordinary you kind of feel like you’re cheating when people rave about your cooking after. Oh well. With the caffeine starting to course through my veins I hit main street and strut my way down to Big Bang Bagels. I’ve got a date with a Mr. Fernie. After I devour my breakfast and wipe the grease from my fingers I’m finally ready. Within three blocks and thirty minutes I pick up a beautiful cheese tray

POLAR PEAK PIZZA | ELK VALLEY PIZZA PHOTO

LE GRAND FROMAGE PHOTO from Le Grand Fromage, fresh beets from Save-On-Foods, and a baggette from Loaf Bakery to soak up my pork gravy. But no meal is complete without chocolate. Am I right? You have choices. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Peanut Butter Cups are to-die-for. Beanpod Chocolate is the only Bean-To-Bar company in Canada that makes chocolate the traditional way. I grab a selection of their artisan chocolates and a mocha bar to nibble on the way home. I can’t wait for my guests to arrive. You may be sensing this by now, but in Fernie we like the best of the best. In skiing, in food, but most of all, in people. “Let the wild rumpus start!”

WINTER 2016|17 › WHERE TO STAY

WHERE TO STAY It can be a tough choice, deciding where to stay when visiting Fernie. The obvious first step is deciding whether to stay at the hill

or in town. Luckily, Fernie Alpine Resort is a short drive from town and there are shuttles providing rides to and from throughout the winter. The next thing to think about is whether you’re with a family, and if it would be easier to be slope-side or near town. Lastly, you should consider amenities. Do you want a kitchen? How about a pool or hot tub? And how near restaurants and shops would you prefer to be? It can be a process, as Fernie is home to beautiful resorts, hotels, motels, hostels, bed and breakfasts, homes for rent, condos… but once you whittle it down, you’ll find that perfect getaway that will provide a fantastic home base for your stay here!

CARL RICKARDS

more inspired people in both the accommodation sector and others to do things which make a visit to Fernie even more reflective of the city’s unique character.

LIZARD CREEK LODGE, HOTEL MANAGER After doing a ski season in Fernie in 2011-12 (remember Champagne Wednesday?), I always hoped to return. Not only is the skiing terrain and culture truly authentic, but the community is so genuine. It’s easy to settle in to Fernie and despite the small population, there is so much going on here. My partner and I were excited to jump at an opportunity to come back to Fernie last December. Fingers crossed the La Nina forecast for the upcoming winter will be just as memorable! Growing up as the child of restaurateurs in the Blue Mountains in Australia, I was immersed in the hospitality industry from a young age and have been working within it ever since. The biggest recent change I have seen is that the ability for hoteliers to manage how our properties are perceived has shifted, and a lot of the control is now with the guests in terms of influencing the decision another potential guest makes on where to stay. For us, as a property that’s completely committed to creating truly remarkable experiences for our guests, this has been a good thing. I have a little theory about doing business in destinations like ours, which already have a global brand and reputation. When you make the decision to either create a new business or reposition an existing one, you

Q. Fernie’s best kept secret… A. Is there such a thing as a secret in Fernie? Q. My preferred way to explore Fernie is… A. Depending on the weather, by skis, water or golf cart. Q. The community of Fernie is known for changing visitors to residents because… A. The City is filled with warm people that create a genuine and welcoming culture. When compared to many mountain towns where being ‘local’ can be a bit of a status, it’s a very unique experience for visitors to feel accepted and welcomed. V. CROOME PHOTO can either build something that seeks to leverage that global reputation, or something that contributes to shaping its future and enhancing it. There are already many businesses in Fernie doing the former, and I hope the success of those will encourage

Q. The perfect way to spend an evening in Fernie is…

A. Heading out after work to camp at the lake, go for a cruise on the boat, cook a delicious BBQ and be able to whip back for work the next day.

A BROKEN SYSTEM THAT’S WORTH FIXING by

Amber Biberdorf

&

Lisa Christopher

From travel to transportation, there’s no doubt that the tides are changing. From Uber, Airbnb, Kijiji, and Amazon, to travel sites such as Expedia and Kayak, you’ll notice that these ground-breaking companies all have at least two things in common ; they are disrupting large industries through technological innovation and they are providing consumers with a more convenient and cost effective alternative to the traditional model.

of a multi-billion dollar industry want to maintain such a prosperous system ? However, this prosperity has come at the expense of the consumer. Real estate commission services may in fact be one of the most expensive “ purchases ” someone makes in their lifetime, after their home and their vehicle.

Why has the real estate industry in Canada not undergone the same disruption ? Real estate transactions have remained relatively unchanged since the 1900’s, with an agent acting as the middle man to represent both the buyer and seller. Traditionally, the agent then handles most aspects of the sale and collects a commission cheque at the end based on a percentage of the sale price. This model seemed fair when the price of a house was substantially less. However, the average price of a house in Canada (as of August 17, 2016) has risen to over $ 500,000. This makes the average real estate commission (based on a 5 % model) come in at around $ 25,000. Not a bad pay cheque !

We are PropertyGuys.com. Our system was conceived because our founders believed (way back in 1998) that people should be able to sell their house without using an agent or paying high commissions. The company has evolved over the years to provide a full service approach that’s similar to that of an agent (at a fraction of the cost), but also takes away all of the hassles often associated with selling on your own.

Since housing prices have risen so drastically, real estate commissions have become inflated when you consider the amount of work that goes into selling a house. That is not to say that it is easy, but it comes down to a matter of value for service - is there enough value provided by a traditional agent to justify giving up tens of thousands of dollars out of your pocket when you sell? Many people say the value just isn’t there anymore, with savvy buyers and sellers looking for alternative solutions to this traditional framework. Some real estate brokerages have made moves to become more value-driven, including flat fee and discount commission agents (i.e. 1 or 2 per cent of the sale price), however, the majority of transactions are still handled the “ old-fashioned way. ” Nothing can improve without change. Do you think the taxi industry would have evolved to become cheaper and easier without a disruptor like Uber ? Or would the hotel industry be turned upside down without Airbnb ? In those industries, the status quo had previously prevented change from occurring. The same is true for Canadian real estate. Even the country’s largest real estate board has been found to have stifled competition. These types of acts and this attitude in general, are doing a good job of maintaining the current system of high commissions and preventing innovative services from entering the market. Control over the industry and data are in the hands of a few players and without heavy investment and intervention, alternative solutions have an uphill battle. It is important to note that this is not an attack on real estate agents, they are players in the game. The broken system in which they operate takes away choice from buyers and sellers. Why wouldn’t the gatekeepers

Shouldn’t there be an alternative ?

It has been our belief from the start that consumers deserve a better way to buy and sell their property and it shouldn’t cost you a fortune or expertise to do so. The PropertyGuys.com system connects sellers with the true real estate experts in their fields such as real estate lawyers and appraisers - who are often replaced by an agent at great expense. However, most people know that expert advice from an unbiased, third party expert is irreplaceable. The traditional real estate industry might say things about us that bend the truth. However, that is bred from fear and a lack of understanding. We understand that change can be scary, especially with so much commission to lose. We invite anyone to chat over coffee about what our system is (and what it isn’t). The truth is, that we simply want to provide buyers and sellers with an easy, sensible and, more economical way to sell their home. Our focus is on the home-owners whose hard earned money is on the line ; money that they could otherwise spend on their next down payment, new appliances or even a vacation ! When it comes down to it, we believe that you work hard for your money, and you should get the most out of it. That is why we do what we do. We want to be a catalyst that moves the real estate industry forward and gives buyers and sellers the freedom to successfully sell their property at a fraction of the cost. Just like our fellow disruptors who have changed the way we watch TV, get around town, and book vacations - it’s not only what Canadians want, it’s also what they deserve.

REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT Fernie grows and develops at a slow and steady pace. Sometimes when asked how much change we’ve seen in town, my immediate answer is… it’s the same. Until I stand back and really think about then and now. Yes, Fernie has changed. But it’s been in increments of improvement, over a long period of time, and it’s truly made Fernie a stronger and more beautiful community. When it comes to real estate and development, it’s been the same. New developments have added to our community, instead of separated it and within town, the renovations and subdivisions within the already developed city have really made a more cohesive vibe. During your visit, take a drive around town visiting the various residential areas. Take a glance at those lots or houses for sale. We know what you’re thinking, so why not make that thought a reality?

MELISSA AND MIKE MACKAY CINCH HOMES

We moved to Fernie for our love and passion for the outdoors over ten years ago, and fell in love with Fernie, its beauty and genuine people. For a couple with few resources, getting into the housing market was challenging. Inventory and options for affordable housing in Fernie, were extremely limited. We quickly realized our passion for creating quality, affordable housing options for the Elk Valley and surrounding area and began researching the factory built home industry, amazed to find a huge variation in product quality, price, and after-sales service. Triple M Housing was a perfect fit for us, a housing manufacturer that stands behind the quality of its homes so confidently that it offers a 20-year structural warranty in the industry. The greatest benefit to our relationship with Triple M Housing is the flexibility it has allowed us to manufacture “Cinch Homes” of our own designs bringing in a modernmountain feel. Cinch Homes designs modular homes to fit into any neighbourhood and build homes that fit into any level of the housing market, offering hybrid homes that are constructed in the factory but finished on site to offer more selection and higher end finishes if desired. We believe that building in a controlled environment with strict quality control, high efficiency and low waste production will be

WINTER 2016|17 › SERVICES

SERVICES Nearly everything you do, nearly everything you experience in this town and beyond is made possible because of the time and effort of other people. Some of this time may be job-related, some may be volunteer-based, but more often than not it is a passionate individual who is deeply invested in his or her community, working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure your dinner, your evening skate ski, your kid’s ski lesson, or your evening’s entertainment is a moment you enjoy and a moment you will forever remember. Take a moment during your stay in Fernie to thank these people that positively impact your time here. They may not do it for the praise, but they sure do deserve it.

RENNE HOOPER

Q. Fernie’s best kept secret…

I officially came to Fernie in April 2015 after accepting a position at the Fernie Chamber of Commerce and lived in my cousin’s glamper for the first four months. (Thanks Kerri and Blair!) Having spent a number of years in Banff, done some travelling, a decade on the coast and a quick stint in my hometown of Calgary, I was stoked to be living back in the mountains.

Q. My preferred way to explore Fernie is…

FERNIE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

My role at the Chamber enables me to wear many hats and be involved in various facets within the community; whether it’s membership services, event and marketing coordination or business advocacy, I find myself busy, engaged and continually meeting inspiring people. In the short time I’ve been here I’ve been impressed with the drive, dedication and ingenuity that entrepreneurs and current business owners have to make their dreams a reality and to succeed.

A. Fernie’s calibre is its best-kept secret. Artists, musicians, athletes, chefs, volunteers, business owners, a strong and supportive community, wild beauty and, of course, the killer trail system!

A. On two wheels. Q. The community of Fernie is known for changing visitors to residents because… A. The lifestyle, the endless adventures and the strong sense of community. V. CROOME PHOTO

Q. The perfect way to spend an evening in Fernie is…

At the Chamber we’re seeing an increase in folks that have moved their virtual office here and a recent business survey found that the #1 reason people move here is for the lifestyle – which is no surprise! From startups, franchises, home-based businesses or non-profits, I feel like Fernie is an ideal location to make it happen.

A. Outside adventures, dinner (and wine!) with family and pals, working on art projects, random dance parties, hanging out with Beanz on the trails… so many ways!

The Lizard Range surrounding Fernie Alpine Resort offers exciting and challenging terrain to the experienced traveller. There is a real danger of avalanches outside the ski boundaries. Skiers must be prepared to travel on their terms, there is no avalanche control or ski patrol rescue. The slopes are steep and the snow deep, travelling outside the boundary is recommended only for those people experienced and equipped to deal with serious avalanche dangers.

oUt oF boUnds sKiinG

Fernie Alpine Resort is a mountain with some very steep terrain. Snow storms deposit huge amounts of fresh snow on the Lizard Range and Lizard Ridge. Avalanche conditions within the ski area can become extreme. During hazardous periods, areas within the ski area are closed until avalanche control work is complete and the skiing is safe. Be aware of closures and stay out of closed areas so that avalanche control teams can do their work. Lift pass suspensions may result.
