WELCOME TO FERNIE, BC BY KRISTA TURCASSO

ANATOLE TUZLAK PHOTO

You made it, or are on your way to discovering a mountain paradise nestled within the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains in the south-east corner of British Columbia – Fernie. If you arrived on a clear day, you most likely had the opportunity of taking in the magnificent views and appreciating the cozy valley this town is situated in. If it was a snowy day (the probability is high), not to worry as when the clouds dissipate and the mountains are revealed in stark contrast to the bluest of winter skies, you might literally lose your breath. Some of the most spectacular winter days take place on the mountains. And yes, while any pow day is spectacular, we’re talking about something a little different. You leave town with low cloud cover and shivery temperatures, only to realize as you gain altitude (whether on a chairlift, snowshoes or snow bike) that you are climbing through the last layers of cloud, breaking through

into glorious sunshine, warmer temps and stunning views of the mountain peaks and a cloud-covered town below - the classic Fernie inversion. These are iconic moments in Fernie, but as you’ll soon find out through this guide and your own experiences, it is just one of many. One of the most noticeable qualities that sets Fernie apart is its community. While tourism and recreation may be what attracts people to our doorsteps, it’s the community that leaves the biggest impression and keeps people coming back… or for some, staying for summer and then never leaving. Maintaining this culture and history can be difficult as tourism increases in an area – just how has Fernie retained its identity?

Fernie began as a mining town in the late 1890’s, when after ten years of raising money and building mines and the railway, William Fernie and Colonel James Baker brought coal mining to the valley. After the Canadian Pacific arrived just a year later, so did the town of Fernie. Logging was quickly the second largest industry in the area, with logging camps employing hundreds. Over the following sixty years, Fernie was plagued with bad luck (mining accidents, devastating fires, the depression of the thirties), but in the 1960s it started to turn around. World coal markets revitalized the economy and Fernie Snow Valley opened its doors to the world. This rich history and the journey many businesses, residents and their families WELCOME continued on next page

have been on to make it in this town is the thread that binds it together. While walking down Main Street, also known as the Historic Downtown, you are instantly aware of the brick and stone buildings. After two fires, building with these materials became mandatory. You may also notice while in the interior of many of these buildings that they have been restored beautifully maintaining many of the historical elements. In 2012 Fernie celebrated 50 years of liftaccess skiing, and all of a sudden we’re coming up on 60. Many still residing here had the opportunity of experiencing the early days with Heiko and Linda Socher at Fernie Snow Valley, a couple who were among the original owners who ran and shaped the hill for years until they sold it in 1997 to the Resorts of the Canadian Rockies. This has been pivotal to the growth and evolution of tourism in this town. Similar experiences can be transferred to many areas of Fernie life – community resources, development, business. There has been change and the residents and visitors continue to meet it with being involved and invested. People who live and spend time here care deeply for this town and are

This is the inspiration behind both the Fernie Fix monthly magazine and the Fernie Fix seasonal guides – to share this love and passion and doing our best to show you the other side of Fernie. In this edition of the Fernie Fix – Winter Guide you will meet a variety of people devoted to this community, alongside a plethora of ideas and suggestions for fun activities, events, and outdoor adventures to explore while here. Thank you for choosing Fernie this winter. We hope your time here exceeds any expectations and leaves you planning your next trip before you’ve even stepped out of the valley! Just 45 minutes from both the Alberta and US borders. Population: 5,249 permanent residents with an additional 2,000 outside city limits and a substantial seasonal population in both winter and summer. Snowfall: Situated in the Elk Valley, Fernie has its own microclimate with approximately 360 cm of snow in town and 875 cm on the hill. Temperature: Average temperature is –11 C in the winter. The Griz: Fernie’s powder legend that points his musket to the clouds to promote snowfall from the skies. The Ghostrider: Located on Mt. Hosmer, a distinctive image of a horse and rider, best seen as the sun sets, but more noticeable in summer. Fernie Alpine Resort: Previously known as Fernie Snow Valley, is going into its 58th season! Catskiing: Fernie is home to Island Lake Catskiing and Fernie Wilderness Adventures, both known for their terrain and snowpack. Festivals: Fernie’s biggest winter festival is Griz Days, in honour of the Griz and the amazing champagne powder Fernie is known for. Held over the first weekend in March, this is an event not to be missed. Additionally, there is the Ski and Board Festival, Reel Canadian Film Festival, Fernie Mountain Film Festival, and Stoke Fest hosted by Shred Kelly held throughout the winter that round out the cultural feel of Fernie winters.

RECREATION Recreation - Likely the origin for your journey to this eclectic mountain town. While skiing may be the main attraction (for obvious reasons) don’t limit yourself and consider exploring the many additional opportunities available here. Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, fat biking – adventure and a new experience awaits, so take a look through the following pages, visit ferniefix.com, or pick up a monthly Fernie Fix to ensure you are exposed to it all and choose wisely… but don’t stress, it’s always nice to leave a little something for your next trip as you know you’ll be back!

Marcelin Blanchette

Cat Driver, Island Lake Lodge Years ago, I went to see a Warren Miller movie in my home town Sherbrooke, Quebec and it changed my life. I was so impressed with the cinematography that I knew I had to experience it for myself. I wasn’t quite sure at the time how it would materialize. I was on my last year of high school with no definite long-term plans, other than family pressure about post-secondary education. Forward a few years, actually four years of college to complete a two-year degree, I came to terms and admitted to my parents that school wasn’t for me. I then packed my skis and stared at my parents’ long faces in my rearview mirror. I worked as a lifty at Lake Louise for the next two seasons. The millwright who I was working under, Lee Alexander, was born and raised in Fernie. He convinced me, with stories of deep powder and tight knit community, to give Snow Valley a try. Heiko Socher took a chance on me and hired me as a night janitor. I had just landed my dream job. Work would never get in the way of skiing again! By the end of the season, I got wind of a turnover in the cat crew department, and again was given an opportunity of a life time. Thanks to Blair Craig’s patience with the steep learning curve ahead of me, I spent the next nine seasons laying corduroy on ski slopes at night and testing the product of my labour during the days. Life was great but working nights became taxing. This is when Island Lake was looking to fill in a driver position. I was able to continue operating a snowcat in the day time and given the opportunity to

ski the scenes in Warren’s movies. Now, I’m living the dream.

Q. The best part of any Fernie day in winter is...

I am truly blessed with two of the best employers in the valley, Island Lake Resort Group and LWE Builders. The balance I get with carpentry in the summer and cat skiing in the winter is unparalleled. Work is always fresh - it never feels like “work.” This coming season will be my 18th with Island Lake.

A. The weather, the sun rise, the morning after or during a storm - it is majestic.

Q. In my opinion what makes Fernie stand out from other mountain towns is… A. Resort proximity from town, as much for FAR as it is for ILL. It’s unheard of to work in the cat skiing industry and go home to my family every night. Priceless.

Q. My preferred way to unwind after a day of play is... A. Stoke the wood stove and get warm and cozy. Q. A favourite secret Fernie stash of mine (one I’m willing to share, anyway) is... A. Papas Run, but don’t tell anyone.

Snowshoe Adventures Not to Miss STORY AND PHOTO BY Christine Thompson

Known for its deep powder days and great skiing, there’s another fun way to explore the snow and all its winter beauty - with snowshoes! The trees covered in snow, glistening as the sun hits their surface with only the sound of your snowshoes crunching above the snow through the seemingly sleeping life of nature surrounding you. Winter brings a beautiful landscape just waiting to be discovered. Try these three snowshoe adventures for something new.

Fairy Creek Falls - 2kms A popular and short snowshoe to a cascading waterfall, perfect for a little trek or family outing. Start your adventure from behind the Fernie Visitor’s Centre following the trail into the trees, snowshoeing up the switchbacks. You’ll pass by the famous bath tub then continue across the landscape heading back into the forest. The sounds of water begin to get closer as you make your way alongside the flowing Fairy Creek river. As you round the corner, the frozen falls are revealed in all their beauty.

Island Lake Lodge - 8kms Snowshoe amongst the huge Cedar trees to a beautiful wooden backcountry lodge that primarily offers catskiing to its guests in the winter.

Begin your adventure at the lower parking lot of Island Lake, starting on the cross country trail. Follow the trail as you meet the road and then join back onto the cross country trail. Snowshoe beside the old Sawmill as the peaks of the Lizard Range become visible. (If you’re looking for a little extra adventure, dip into the Old Growth Trail for some deep, snowy goodness.) You’ll eventually join back with the road as you continue your climb towards the lodge. From the lodge you can snowshoe down to the lake and take in the stunning vista featuring the Three Bears. If you’re looking to skip the snowshoe or to add to your adventure, consider booking a two-course Winter Lunch! This can include a snowcat ride to the lodge. Advance bookings are required.

Silver Springs Lake - 1.5kms Extend your snowshoe adventures and hit the road! A short drive west to the town of Elko provides access to this worthwhile hike, and a glimpse of a busy summer spot in its winter slumber. The trail begins from the designated parking lot, making gains in a short distance. Pass the powerline and continue up. You’ll eventually arrive at the top of the jumping rocks, where summer enthusiasts take to the waters. Relax and enjoy a wintery picnic or further your snowshoe adventure and continue on to the second and third lake. For more snowshoe and hiking options and recommendations, visit ferniefix.com.

Now This is the Way to Spend a Winter’s Day BY krista turcasso NIC GENOVESE PHOTO

Whether you’re here for a short or a long time, one thing is for sure - you want to experience the perfect winter’s day. For obvious reasons, there are varying opinions on just what this day would entail… so we got in touch with three avid winter recreationalists, each with their own passion and they gave us a run-down of what this day would look like from their perspective.

Dylan Siggers Powder Enthusiast, Photographer and Videographer Historically, when it comes to powder skiing, the early bird is destined to get the proverbial worm. But for me, my ultimate day of skiing in Fernie doesn’t start until 1pm. See, I like to do most of my sleeping during the morning, and so does my dog. So once Lucy (our dog) and I crawl out of bed around 10, my wife is ready for breakfast. We will usually head uptown for our morning routine of Valley Social and Big Bang Bagels. Or if we’re feeling fancy, breakfast at the Blue Toque. By this time, the local faces we bump into have the usual conversations, “oh did

you guys ski already today?” to which we sheepishly reply, “...no not yet.” Around 12:30 we’re on our way to the resort. Me with my ski boots already on and Sophie getting her snowboard boots laced up as we cross the West Fernie bridge. We’re right on schedule, 1pm. First lap, Corner Pocket. At this point, the next storm is beginning to roll in, and it’s already snowed 10cms since everyone who showed up at 9am left at 10:30. And the flakes are huge. After we swerve our way down the right-hand side of Lizard Bowl, we get a feel for the snow and what elevation is skiing the best. Turns out, it’s all of them. We meet up with our Floridian roommate Local Dave, who has been here since 9, but ain’t leaving ‘til the lifts stop spinning and decide that Stag Leap is going to be “insane.” After

spinning three more top to bottom laps using the New Side to access the Old Side from the very tip-top, we’re done. It’s 4:20 and we’ve just finished skiing what is now kneedeep blower all the way down Easter proper. There’s not a single person in sight and the flakes at this point are damn near the size of butterflies. The phone dying in my pocket is buzzing, it’s my dad calling to let me know he’s predicting at least 60cms overnight, and he’s never wrong. No trip to The Northern tonight, it’s going to be double overhead tomorrow. The true story behind this photo taken last February at Fernie Alpine Resort. Perfect Winter Day continued on next page

Justin Boehm Sled Guide and Avalanche Educator, Elk Valley Snow Shepherds (EVSS) and VP, Fernie Snowmobile Association (FSA) My ultimate Fernie winter day? I would Carpe Diem with an early alarm clock and a strong cup of Nespresso before snow-blowing 30cm+ pow with my border collies… this is Fernie after all. Enter the second cup of coffee savoured while reviewing the weather, bulletin and InfoEx. Since it’s my perfect day, we’d be looking at deep snow with good stability for our EVSS guide team and PM FSA grooming staff operations. If Mother Nature didn’t feel like delivering, it just means

I have to work a little harder and smarter out in the field today to get the job done. Load up the Dodge, press play on my favourite Spotify Playlist and roll out to the staging area. Quick check in with the trailhead kiosk staff to make sure FSA operations are dialled. Then I put my guide ‘helmet’ on and meet today’s clients. Safety chat, rescue practice, fingers crossed no-one forgot anything… then it’s go-time! The best mornings are breaking trail through new snow blanketing fresh corduroy grooming as the sun rises, anticipation building for the powder feast we are about to devour once we dip off trail and reach our prescribed riding zone. The only better

feeling than catching nice turns for yourself is watching someone else hook into a deep one for the first time. The day is full of great riding, spreading the two-stroke cold-smoke Fernie stoke, and hopefully building skills, confidence, and backcountry literacy along the way. The day slips by, equalling the sum of ridges gained and lost multiplied by smiles per gallon. We’ve barely stopped for lunch and now we’re headed back on fumes to the Park Place Pub for a calorie refuel. Even a rough day can end well – fixing sleds in the shop over a six’er of FBC tinnies or heading out for a midnight refuel rendezvous with the groomer on a big powder day. Ready to rinse and repeat all over again tomorrow. Perfect Winter Day continued on next page

DEREK AND STEVIE G DOODLE AT THE TOP OF PHAT BASTARD | PHIL MCLACHLAN PHOTO

Derek Bird Winter Trail Groomer and Avid Fat Biker Being surrounded by the mountains means that the sunrises happen later, but the sun sets early. This means, you can sleep in and still catch the sunrise, but you have to be efficient with your time to get maximum chubbing - the local term for shredding on a fat bike! Alright, so you caught the sunrise and now it’s time to check the weather forecast. Tut tut, put your phone down; you’re in the mountains, look out the window! Oh ya, partly cloudy and -5, primo! To truly start the day… food and a good cup of organic joe (or a fancy mimosa if you so desire)! Off we go up town to the Blue Toque. A local favourite known for their unique

twist on your conventional breakie providing options for meat lovers and vegans alike. Remember the mimosa, well this place has an extensive menu for you! Now that you’re fuelled and warmed up, it’s time to hit the trails! But first, call Spa 901 to see if you can book their Hot Pools and InfraRed Sauna for the inevitable tired legs at the end of the day. First off head to Montane to get the blood flowing. Pedal up the Fernie Inclusive Trail to the Montane Hut and take in the spectacular views. Keep pedalling up Roots towards Uprooted and then the real fun begins. Once you reach the Hyperventilation sign keep going up and go down Ruby’s Way back through Montane in to town. While in town, head to Big Bang Bagel for the best bang in town! The Mr. Fernie is a

crowd pleaser and yes, we are still talking about Bagels! Full of carbs, protein and fat so you are ready for the next pedal! Either pedal or hop in the truck and head over to Mt. Fernie for a more challenging but very rewarding climb up Phat Bastard and down Red Sonya. If legs, stamina, and time permit, head back up Phat Bastard and down Blue Betty. Truly exhausted and hungry again, head to the Himalayan Spice Bistro for some Himalayan Cuisine. My favourite is the Butter Chicken and for the Vegetarians – the Malai Kofta. If you were lucky enough to book Spa 901 – make sure you get there before they close, your legs will thank you for it.

Nordic Adventures with Your Four-Legged Friends BY Tara Higgins

ISLAND LAKE | VINCE MO PHOTO

Opportunities abound in Fernie when it comes to getting out and about with your four-legged friends. While the Nordic Centre and Golf Course are STRICTLY for Nordic Skiing ONLY do not despair. Close to town is the Montane area, which is fantastic because it has well groomed Nordic ski ONLY trails that your dog can join you on. The network is extensive and the key to success is to follow the green signs. If in doubt, take the wider path. The single track is best for snowshoeing and fat biking. There are three main ways up to the warming hut.

Two are more gradual climbs. There are a few ‘steeper’ sections on these routes, but they are short and followed by gentle upslopes to the hut. The third way is a classic Fernie straight up, not for the light of heart. Park by the bridge on Coal Creek Road, go past the barrier and just to the left of the Montane development sign you will see the beginning

of the track. You can climb clockwise or counterclockwise. I suggest you download the Trailforks app and select Nordic skiing to see the routes in the area. Fernie Alpine Resort also has some great Nordic skiing once you are up the initial hill. Nordic Adventures continued on next page

FERNIE ALPINE RESORT | MATT KUHN PHOTO

There is no shame in walking up the start hill, in fact I would say it is HIGHLY recommended. Whenever I try to ski up it, whether on classic or skate skis I am so super sad, the rest of the ski is slightly tainted, which is not the case when I walk up. Once up to the start, there are two loops available. Early season it is only the first loop that is groomed and skiable. Approximately 3.5kms, on classic skis it is a nice sojourn with a few ups. On skate skis, the hill starting off the counterclockwise loop will get the blood pumping but after that the terrain is full of a pumping trail, little ups and downs, that when co-ordination is on your side are so much fun. Once the season has developed take the time to do the extended loop. If you are

uneasy on Nordic skis, stick to the bottom track (Silk Trail) to get out to the Scandia Loop. Once there stay right to take the loop counterclockwise. As you begin to circle back you will find the most beautiful glade of birch trees on your right. If the weather is good, take off your skis and walk over to the ridge. The view is a stunning look across to the other side of the Elk Valley/Morrissey Ridge.

great place to get the whole family out. Use it as an out and back to go for as long or as short as you like. For a quick 40 minute outing with fido go to the bottom of the big hill just before Cabin Corner. You can also ski all the way up to the lodge where they have dog beds outside so if it’s not too cold you can stop for lunch, Don’t forget to book before heading up.

Last but not least is the Island Lake Lodge access route. We are incredibly fortunate that Island Lake puts in a cross country trail for everyone to use which they often groom twice a day. You will need an AWD or 4WD vehicle to get to the Island Lake parking lot past the Provincial Park. Once there please use the lower parking lot where the cross country access is. The path is wide and a

Anyway you look at it, Fernie is a great place for Nordic skiing with your dog, and every trail you end up on can be made easy or hard by the pace you set. So get sliding with your four-legged friends, and don’t forget to flick or pick up after your dog - no-one wants to add stickiness to their skis that way.

Warming Huts and Hidden Trails story and photos by JessE Bell

Winter is a trillion snowflakes and whispering trees on the crispest, quietest of nights. It’s steamy coffee against white-walled snowbanks, and January embers glowing against the cast iron of a wood stove in a log cabin deep in the woods. For so many of us, winter is everything; everything we need, everything we want, everything found along a ski-tour track or up a snowmobile trail. It’s a season worthy of recognition, often mislabeled as too frigid, too cold, and too long. If winter had a say she’d send everyone to a place where we could best take her in, and make us stay awhile; in a bunk between the down of a sleeping bag, with whisky jacks soaring from an age-old cedar tree to the wood-shingled roof above your head. She’d send us to the backcountry.

Warming huts and hidden trails, secret couloirs and corniced ridge lines. She’d send us to the log cabin deep in the woods surrounded by a forest of Engelman spruce. Because being in the backcountry in any season is the best way to fall back into ourselves, at a time when we most need it. Luckily, there are so many backcountry cabins to do just that, and they’re all nice and close (relatively) to Fernie. I find myself staring at one such cabin—the snowy Little Sand Cabin—one January morning, its centre window in the upstairs room barely visible behind metres of the

season’s snow, and I know that despite the chill in the air and the hunger in my belly, the backcountry is exactly where I’m meant to be. Little Sand Cabin is run by Grizzly Basin Outfitters. Here with several friends on a sled-access ski weekend, I wonder why anyone would want to be anywhere else in the dead of winter. Footprints in the snow lead to a high-rise outhouse built in the trees. Snowmobiles sit in an old horse pasture. There’s fireworks, ridge-top mini eggs and deep pow descents with friends. Girl power and gasoline. Huts and Trails continued on next page

There’s even a theme song—”Kiss From A Rose” by Seal—a real 1995 classic. We spend the weekend doing sled and ski laps. Eating bacon and nuts-and-bolts, marvelling at the snowpack, and relishing the contrast of deafening snowmobile braps below bright, starry nights. Late into a red-wine-haze of Saturday night, our theme song blares from the cabin’s windows and door. Out of tune and a little disorderly, we sing and yell a “Kiss From A Rose.” When we emerge the next afternoon at the staging grounds back in valley bottom, there’s a deep sense of camaraderie. A little sadness for the weekend’s end, but a great, unwavering sense of belonging. And this, my friends, is why being in a backcountry hut in the middle of the woods in the dead of winter is so very, incredibly wonderful— because it makes you feel the opposite of dead. It makes you feel alive. Grizzly Basin Outfitters offers rentals for three other cabins throughout the winter months, all within the Easy Kootenays. And there are other options, too. The Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club has cabins available for rent throughout the winter season, and you can also check out the Alpine Club of Canada’s extensive list of backcountry huts and cabins. Just remember to know the terrain, have a trip plan, and study the snowpack before you go. It’s easy to find ourselves lost in the millions and trillions of snowflakes that soften the day’s light and silence the night’s noise. Winter is always a guarantee—gardens and rooftops buried feet deep, sidewalks iced and slippery, bombs booming from the headwall at the ski hill, echoing into the valley below. And while there’s nothing wrong with curling up on the couch to a good book and great glass of Pinot, there’s something truly right about the orange glow of January embers warming your cheeks in a log cabin, deep in the winter woods on those bright, starlit nights.

The Friendly Faces of FAR STORY AND photos by Emma Polit

You’re in Fernie for the winter season, and thus will likely be spending a fair amount of time at Fernie Alpine Resort (FAR). We got out to meet some of the staff who make this place come to life, asking them the same four questions: 1. When did you first start working at FAR 2. What brought you here? 3. Tell us something you love about your job. 4. What is your favourite run at the hill? Here is what they had to say!

Emily Duhaime Lift Operations and Ticket Checking Supervisor 1. I first started working at FAR in November 2012, through the Job Fair. 2. We wanted to do a ski season out west and also to live in a community, not just at a ski hill and not have to do a 30 minute drive up to the hill.

Emily

3. I love it when we make someone’s day. People save up their money, get their family organized, and travel to Fernie - we want them to have a safe and fun time when they get here. 4. I don’t need to be sending it to have the best time, just good friends and feeling confident on my skis. North Ridge on a powder day is pretty incredible.

Faye Latulippe Front of House Supervisor at Legends Mountain Eatery 1. My first season was as a lifty in 2004. I have been the Front of House Supervisor at Legends since 2014. 2. I always wanted to see the Rockies! Stayed for one season, went back home and came right back!

3. What I love the most about Legends in the winter is the customers that come back to see me during their vacation year after year! Also, the locals coming to get their daily beer.

4. Tough one, but I’ve got to say Lone Fir. That run has it all!

4. Linda’s Run and the Saddles are always great fun!

Alina Jackman Groomer

Mark McQuarrie Millwright for Lift Maintenance

1. I started working at FAR as a Ski Instructor on Christmas Day 2011.

1. I started working at FAR in November of 1999 as a lifty. 2. I came here to snowboard and to have a good time. 3. Easily the crew of people I work with! They’re all super great people who are very easy to spend 40hrs a week alongside. 4. Don’t know if I have one. I ride pretty much all over. I guess if I have to pick, I’d say any of the big three (Stag Leap, Sky Dive, Decline) or Cedar Ridge depending on conditions.

Joey Kosolofski Electrician/building Maintenance 1. I started working at FAR 2014/15. I worked in the Lift Ops department. 2. I came here to snowboard, 100%. 3. Getting to work on the side of a mountain

every day while watching the seasons change is pretty special.

2. I came here for the “Legendary Powder,” an amazing community and improved quality of life. 3. I love the anonymity and challenges associated with being a Groomer. It is a really special feeling to be out skiing during the day and watching people enjoy the mountain without any idea of how the grooming got there or who prepared it. Grooming allows me to share my love of the sport with everyone. 4. Every run accessed by the Boomerang Chair. There is an amazing fall line skiing in every direction. Ripping short turns from top to bottom down Boomerang Ridge is always the icing on the cake.

Mark Vale Winter Sports School 1. I started at the ski hill in the winter of 2016. 2. We had done a few winters at Mont Tremblant in Quebec and were on our last visa so decided to travel Canada. We

Olivia accidentally ended up in Fernie, and like most peopleLONE we found toMO leave and WOLFit| hard VINCE PHOTO are planning on staying permanently. 3. I’ve been coaching snowboarding for the last eight years. I enjoy meeting new people and passing the knowledge of a sport that I love. 4. Choosing a favourite run is impossible, it changes daily and depends on the conditions. The big mountain options of Fernie are so much fun.

Olivia Johnson Ski Patrol 1. My first season was summer 2016 and now I’m headed into my sixth! 2. I moved here in the summer to put down some roots before the winter season started. I was trying to get on the FAR patrol team and hoped that working at the hill in the summer would help me get my foot in the door. I immediately fell in love with the town and knew I wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon. 3. Shredding (super) early morning pow and playing with explosives... pretty much the dream! 4. It totally depends! If it’s a big powder day, you can find me somewhere in The Fingers/Easter Ridge, but slushy spring Lizard Bowl Laps with my buds are high on the list, too!

Top Ten Family Winter Fun BY KRISTA TURCASSO

FUN AT THE ARTS STATION | VINCE MO PHOTO

Fernie is such an attractive location for families for a variety of reason, but above all else because of the opportunities and amenities available for this younger cohort (and also those young at heart). As the number of families continues to grow, so does the programming, facilities and events geared to this market… and really, it’s to the benefit of us all, providing a great resource not just for those residing here, but those visiting. Educational programming, outdoor pursuits, arts and culture opportunities, and a whole lot of fun! Here are our top ten for you to explore this winter!

1. Swimming The Fernie Aquatic Centre is a multipurpose indoor facility that is great for all ages, with four bodies of water including a pool for small children, rope swing and a slide, sauna and steam rooms. They also have weekly events, classes and more. Visit fernie.ca for more information.

2. Hit the Slopes Fernie Alpine Resort has a myriad of opportunities for kids of all ages. Children under five can receive a Tiger Pass for just $20, which offers full mountain access. The Magic Carpet is a great place to start, with

the Mighty Moose next in line. The Winter Sports School has lesson programs for all ages, and day care is available on mountain. A popular evening choice is night skiing Fridays and Saturdays 4-9pm. skifernie.com

trails and loops including a beginner loop. The Fernie Nordic Society hosts many events great for wee ones throughout the winter season, including monthly family ski evenings. fernienordic.com

3. Nordic Skiing

4. Tobogganing

There are various options depending on the level and length of time you and your family would like to be out on the trails. The Fernie Golf Club offers a shorter, flat route perfect for a quick escape or those just learning. Montane off Coal Creek Rd. offers groomed trails as well, with undulating terrain, and the Elk Valley Nordic Centre offers numerous

Sitting at the base of a valley, Fernie has some hills and when they are covered with snow, they offer a whole lot of excitement. One of the more popular areas for tobogganing in town is just behind the Dirt Jump Park, adjacent to the Aquatic Centre. There is a parking area at the base, where FAMILY FUN continued on next page

There is also a slope at Fernie Alpine Resort, to the left of the Mighty Moose, and tailgating is also an option as you watch your kids slide or ski in the evening!

5. Events Throughout the season, there are many events hosted with kids in mind! The Arts Station hosts Cultural Saturdays and Fernie Youth Art Collective throughout the year, as well as a variety of events and workshops for kids leading up to Christmas. Look for Christmas events happening at different venues in town. Also watch for Fernie Alpine Resort’s family friendly New Year’s celebration, and their Griz Kids’ Carnival in the New Year! Another not to miss event is Shred Kelly’s Stoke Fest. This popular local band goes out of their way to include a kidspecific concert earlier in the evening and it is a big hit. There is so much more, so make sure to keep checking ferniefix.com to see what is happening during your stay!

6. Indoor Climbing A great indoor option to break up your time in the great outdoors! There are two climbing walls in Fernie, one located at the College of the Rockies and the other at Evolution Health and Fitness. Both walls are available for you and your family. The College has set times with the opportunity to book a specific date and time, 1-866-423-4691. The Rock Garden at Evolution is also available for you and your kids, and is a great opportunity to expose them to this sport. evolutionfernie. com

7. Community Programming We are so lucky to have an abundance of family programs available in Fernie, including Kindergym at the Fernie Family Centre, Toddlertime and Storytime at the Fernie Heritage Library, and Parent and Tot Fun Time at the Knox United Church. All of these programs and others are either free or carry a small fee for you and your children. ekkids.ca.

8. Skating There is nothing quite like skating outdoors. In town, skating on the Annex Pond, Maiden Lake or at the rink at the Fernie Court House (weather dependent) is a popular pastime.

SKATING | MATT KUHN PHOTO

Recently, a full-sized outdoor rink was built adjacent to the Aquatic Centre! If it’s more of an indoor day, the Memorial Arena hosts public skating regularly. There is also drop-in Adult Shinny, Skate and Shoot and Youth Shinny. Visit fernie.ca for further details.

Last but not least, the Fernie Heritage Library. This is a gorgeous building, worth visiting to just explore and enjoy a moment reading a book with the family. There are also regular programs hosted weekly for all ages. fernie.bc.libraries.coop

Perhaps after skating, your kids are keen to take in a game. Fernie’s Junior B Hockey Team, the Ghostriders, play regularly throughout the season. Visit our events calendar to see when they hit the ice during your stay!

10. Movie Time

9. Art and Culture Fernie is home to some beautifully restored buildings housing some of our best assets. The Fernie Arts Station hosts new exhibits each month, and has an array of events and programs throughout the winter months, including those catered to younger audiences. theartsstation.com The Fernie Museum has a permanent exhibit This Is Our Fernie on the main floor that is interactive and a great way to spend some time with the family learning about our rich and dramatic history. It also hosts rotating exhibits on the 2nd floor, along with special events. ferniemuseum.com.

The Vogue Theatre is also a beautiful historic building in downtown Fernie, showing first-run movies at 7pm nightly, with 9pm screenings on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, as well as feature and 3D matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 3pm. We’ll be keeping our events calendar up to date at ferniefix.com, to ensure you don’t miss out while here!

HEALTH AND WELLNESS It’s not surprising that in such an active community with people spending as many hours as possible exploring the outdoors, you can find an impressive list of health-focused businesses and practitioners. Residents and visitors enjoy pushing themselves physically almost as much as they enjoy finding the balance through therapy, relaxation, cross-training, and rehabilitation. Whether you are after a day at the spa, a rejuvenating yoga class, a session with a personal trainer, or an appointment with an acupuncturist, it is available in Fernie. May we just recommend that you book in advance, as these services are highly sought after.

Elk Valley Pilates I hated my body. It was awkward, confusing and riddled with pain. I was so disconnected from it and the signals it was trying to send me. Bullying was my chosen way to communicate with it. Scaring it into submission when it wouldn’t lift that far too heavy dumbbell or wanted to stop running and collapse. Naturally this took its toll and I ended up immobile and frustrated sitting in the physiotherapist’s treatment room as she told me I was headed for serious injury if I didn’t slow down, breathe and connect to my body. She referred me to Pilates. Finally, I found a healthy way to communicate with it. I learned to listen to it and developed an awareness that enabled me to provide it with exactly what it needed to grow stronger, recover quicker, and become its most reliable, efficient self. Today I feel strong. Powerful. In tune. I am the conductor and all parts of me are the orchestra, working together in harmony to create a beautiful symphony. I believe everyone deserves to feel this way. Studying the Pilates method and obtaining my teaching certification has given me the tools to enable me to help others discover a physical state that gives them the freedom to participate in their favourite activities for many years to come.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Moving to the Elk Valley with eight years of teaching experience, I’m looking forward to sharing the wonders of Pilates with Fernie and guiding everyone towards AH-HA! moments as they discover how to move with their body instead of against it. Q. In my opinion what makes Fernie stand out from other mountain towns is… A. Acceptance. I wasn’t born here and yet the locals have embraced me as I am, flaws (I don’t downhill ski) and all. Q. The best part of any Fernie day in winter is... A. Playing the real life version of “Guess Who?” with everybody hidden under so many

layers, it’s fun trying to figure out who they are. Q. My preferred way to unwind after a day of play is... A. Free the feet! Boots off, socks off, toes wriggling with glee as I prance barefoot through the snow. It’s great for the sole! Q. A favourite secret Fernie stash of mine (one I’m willing to share, anyway) is... A. The Bridge Bistro when Steph the server is on shift. She is the very definition of “Service with a smile.” You’re not having the best day? I challenge you to avoid catching that infectious grin.

Everyday Mindfulness with Francesca Ter Poorten

Winter has arrived…yesss! With the snow falling, it’s time to get focused on what work/life balance is going to look like for you. Maybe you’re rolling into town to shred but have to work a few jobs as well buy those new fat skis. Or perhaps you’re a pow commuter, travelling up and down the snowy highways every weekend hoping to leave your job and stress behind. Either way, it can be challenging to not suffer from ski town stress. How can I find balance? Will I have enough time? How can I hit the slopes today as well as the xc ski track while juggling drinks with friends, loading a posse of kids in the car and making sure everyone has BOTH skis, mitts, boots, etc as well as getting wood for the bonfire? Or it could even just be trying to make a dash up to the hill for a few runs before that first (or second) job starts. Phew! Ski town life is stressful! When you feel your shoulders starting to creep up around your ears, your jaw clenching, and like your head is going to explode… when you realize that you forgot a shift or it’s ten minutes before ski lessons and your kid is standing in the doorway with only one sock on crying because they only wanted to wear their purple toque that day and you can’t find it… Take a breath. Slow down. Taking a breath is the beginning of centring yourself and slowing down. Pay attention fully to your inhale and exhale. So that, for a moment, there are no other thoughts just the sound of your breath. The quiet won’t last long, but that’s okay. Have patience and be forgiving towards yourself. A focused, deep

SUBMITTED PHOTO

breath is the equivalent to sitting back on your couch and having a glass of wine. Take another breath, and then begin a mental inventory. What’s controllable right now, in this moment? The negative thoughts, playing out the “what if’s” are not helpful. Acknowledge these thoughts, and let them go. Instead, focus on what you would like to happen within the next ten minutes and the positive steps you can take to get there.

Mindfulness tools like these can be used throughout your day, helping you to be present and calm within each moment, between each task or event. Let’s face it, even in this mountain paradise the everyday stressors can start to take a toll on our mental and physical health. So do yourself a favour and work on incorporating some daily habits to fight the “mountain town” stress. The positive is that the more you practice mindfulness, the easier and more natural it becomes.

With one last breath, move in that direction.

ARTS AND CULTURE The cultural side of Fernie is expanding alongside the hearts of those here. Exhibits, plays, art shows, pottery seminars, independent films… it’s become such a vibrant and essential part of life in Fernie. And this is just the day to day, year round. Come winter, the energy shifts and the nights come to life. From the après music scene at the Griz Bar at Fernie Alpine Resort to the infamous jam night at the Brickhouse to the rustic and historic feel of the Royal, the musical offerings in Fernie are each unique providing a different experience and atmosphere from early evening until late. Whether you are looking for dinner alongside live music, perhaps at Infinitea or Loaf, an evening performance at the Arts Station, or a heart-pumping dance session to world-renowned DJs, you will find it here and will be impressed by the artists Fernie attracts during the winter season.

Sage McBride Musician, Shred Kelly

I moved to Fernie after high school to take a year off before getting serious about school or a career. After my season in Fernie, I moved to Vancouver to pursue performance arts. I quickly realized that the city was no place for me, and decided to move back to the mountains but vowed to incorporate performance arts into my lifestyle. That began with doing murder mysteries, children’s theatre and joining a cover band that performed at open jam nights around town. Jam nights at the Brickhouse allowed me to meet the other members of Shred Kelly and the rest is history. It’s hard to believe we’ve been at it for ten years! Living in Fernie has been an incredible inspiration for a lot of our music, and we’ve been so grateful for the continuous support of the community. It is the most magical place to come home to after tour to decompress, ski, hike, bike and feel grounded. Since I moved to Fernie 15 years ago the arts sector has grown tremendously with Wapiti and the Wednesday Socials. I’d love to see the Arts Station grow to incorporate a larger stage for touring acts at an all ages venue. Q. In my opinion what makes Fernie stand out from other mountain towns is… A. The community. It is such an amazing group of people who call Fernie home, and an inspiring place to live and raise children.

NICK NAULT PHOTO

Q. The best part of any Fernie day in winter is...

Q. A favourite secret Fernie stash of mine (one I’m willing to share, anyway) is...

A. Going out for a Montane lap on my cross country skis or a lap at the ski hill and then hanging out by our fireplace.

A. The cross country ski up to Island Lake Lodge for a gourmet lunch (a must do experience!) and the Sunday Night Roasts at Infinitea for $10.

Q. My preferred way to unwind after a day of play is... A. Getting together with friends for a bite to eat at one of the many incredible restaurants that Fernie boasts.

Mountain Reads by Shelby Cain

Beach reads? Nah. They’re about as satisfying as Tic Tacs. Mountain reads are the sticky-toffee-pudding of books. Deep, dark, and full of substance. I love reading. It’s been a passion of mine since I was a child, and even now – despite the struggle to find four minutes of peace before I collapse into bed – I do it every day. I crave more time to do it right. Really dissolve into the story. For me, summer is not the best time to accomplish this. How many moms out there are devouring novel after sex-soaked novel while reclining on your beach chair? I’m not sure who invented the term ‘beach reads,’ but I can guarantee they didn’t have children. The second I drop my gaze to be introduced to the new lawyer in town with the jutting cheekbones, shrieks from the dock jolt me into a full run. So much for that idea. But beach season is long gone, and now it’s time to cozy up under a pile of warm laundry, and read. Read your face off. The kids are safely occupied, or at least not about to drown. No one knows how long it’s supposed to take you to get all that laundry folded. It’s cold, dark, and perfect. And in this uninterrupted snowy-serenity, we have the ability to go deeper than cheekbones and a love triangle. We can delve into harrowing life tales and digest more enlightened, thoughtful prose. Mystery. Heartbreak. On vacation in our powdery paradise? Even better. You’ll need a break from carving turns or breaking trail. At least, your quads will. Stoke the fire, and settle in. Let yourself be swept away, inspired, and kept up late while clutching your third cup of chamomile and wiping tears with a wayward sock. These are a few of my wintery favourites. Enjoy.

Touching the Void by Joe Simpson (Jonathan Cape, 1988)

Tales of men risking everything for the chance to stand higher are plentiful. The ones that garner most of the

attention generally involve Mt. Everest. This story is different. It’s a terrifying, harrowing tale of survival like you’ve never read before. Injuries and exhaustion and pushing the boundaries of human endurance and emotion to the ultimate limit. Told first hand by Joe Simpson, the story will transport you directly into the nightmare he endured with climbing partner Simon Yates in the Peruvian Andes. I was haunted by it, and continually asked myself what I would’ve done. When. At what point do you give up? If you ask Joe Simpson, never.

West Kootenay wilderness in search of free love, living, and adventure. They resided in a canvas teepee and endured our frigid winters with no running water or electricity. This is just the beginning of a memoir that left me speechless, fascinated, and in awe of the fortitude this woman possesses. When her teenage mother meets a man, the idyllic vision her patriarchal grandfather had for the family unravels at breakneck speed, and Cea’s life spins out of control. No spoilers here, but this book is hopeful and inspired by the resilience of the human spirit.

Indian Horse

Jenny Willson Mystery Series

by Richard Wagamese (Douglas & McIntyre, 2012) The late Richard Wagamese wove many strands of his own heart into this haunting novel. It tells the story of Saul Indian Horse, an Ojibway boy from Northwestern Ontario who is placed in a residential school at the age of eight. Hockey plays a major role in this story, and the elevated sense of the game that the great players possess is brilliantly captured by Wagamese. I was captivated from the first page. The writing is clear and emotional and finds a way to honour the sport of hockey along with all the young souls who suffered so horrifically.

North of Normal: A Memoir of My Wilderness Childhood, My Unusual Family, and How I Survived Both by Cea Sunrise Person (HarperCollins Canada, 2014)

As a very young child, Cea Sunrise Person moved with her family from California to the

by Dave Butler (Dundurn Press, 2017)

For a fabulous local read, author and biologist Dave Butler has just launched the third installment of his enthralling Jenny Willson series, In Rhino We Trust. Full Curl was the first in this series and Butler received the Arthur Ellis award for the Best First Crime Novel in Canada. I asked him why he chose to move the story from the Rocky Mountains to Africa. “I felt it was time to challenge myself as a writer, and to challenge Jenny Willson as a character. So, after visiting Namibia twice, I sent Jenny there to help stop rhino poaching. I was intrigued to see how she would react to new landscapes, to a culture that treats women very differently than she was used to in North America, to a fresh law enforcement challenge, and to the potential to be seen as just one more foreign colonizer, there to tell them what to do. It was a fascinating experience, for both of us.” These wonderful books are available at Fernie’s much loved independent book store, Polar Peak Books & Treasures.

winter 2019|20 › SHOPPING

SHOPPING Nearly every year Fernie welcomes a boutique or witnesses the growth of a current one. This has truly added to the Fernie experience. Not only can you find some of the best recreational, culinary, health and wellness, and cultural experiences on offer, you can find apparel, gear, books, toys, locally made chocolate, coffee, ice cream, jewellery and art… all right here. The best part about the Fernie shopping experience is that the shops are all easy to access and close by, outdoors in the beautiful Historic Downtown, which offers amazing vistas of the surrounding mountains. (How often have we caught a visitor standing in the middle of the Main Street, snapping a photo of the iconic Fernie Alpine Resort from downtown?) There is also the thriving 7th Avenue zone, just off Highway 3. These attributes, alongside outstanding customer service will definitely be a highlight of your visit to Fernie.

Dennis Schafer

after exiting the foothills. The moon climbed its way up the horizon changing from purple to white with every colour in between. Gorgeous! Fernie differs for it is surrounded by rugged mountains, that are juvenile compared to other weathered ranges, then flattens to the land of the living skies in just over an hour’s drive.

Stick and Stone

Originally, I am a farm kid from Southwest Saskatchewan. Our farm was located five minutes from the Alberta border and ten minutes from the Montana border which was 30 kms from the nearest town with a population of 60. I decided to venture Westward and made my way to Fernie firstly in 2002. Very quickly I realized this is where I wanted to hang my hat, so I did just that. I genuinely love living here and am so very thankful to have the opportunity to raise my family here. So many options to fill our days with adventures and laughs. I never had direct intentions to involve myself in the retail sector. I was always interested in getting into the cannabis sector more on the operational side with extracts and edibles. Long story short, Sarah-Jane Nelson’s (my business winger) family and my family became friends when we had to re-home our furry family member Nella. Shortly after, I recognized SJ’s passion for cannabis and an opportunity presented itself where I asked the question, “So friend, are we going to be friendly competitors in the cannabis retail sector or shall we join forces?” History in the making now... Since opening day, the Stick and Stone crew has been appreciating the heartfelt conversations with the fine folk of Fernie and beyond. I would like to see this sector

Q. The best part of any Fernie day in winter is...

MATT KUHN PHOTO

become less restrictive because as of now, if you want to buy Stick and Stone Cannabis Co. branded merch to support our local shop, you have to go to our website: stickandstone.ca and purchase online. I also hope to see the cannabis sector become less onerous and expensive for the small growers with decades of experience to become legal. One way to dissolve the black/grey market is to assume the player’s willing to become legitimate. Q. In my opinion what makes Fernie stand out from other mountain towns is… A. So I recently made the drive back to the flatlands and was pondering what makes Fernie different from other mountain towns. Most mountain towns have hiking, biking, fishing, skiing, sledding, hunting etc. at an arms reach and then it happened shortly

A. Getting up at the crack of dawn and whipping up breakfast and patiently awaiting the pitter patter of small footsteps making their way down the stairs for some one-onone morning laughs with their Pops. Life is busy, so I cherish this time with my three kids in the wee hours of the morning. Q. My preferred way to unwind after a day of play is... A. Oh geez. It has been awhile… but if presented, I love to sit by the Ol’ wood fuelled stove and play board games with the kids. Q. A favourite secret Fernie stash of mine (one I’m willing to share, anyway) is... A. It’s no secret, so I am willing to share that I really enjoy Triple Trees on a fresh dump day. If lapping, it seems like the run’s outcome can end up so different. Get lost in the moment and lose your Wolf Pack. Whoops!

Surviving Winter in Canada BY Krista Turcasso You have arrived, and while are stunned by the beauty of the beautiful Elk Valley are completely under-prepared for the conditions. From the epic, overnight dumps of snow to the temps rising creating a slushy mess in town to said slushy mess freezing within hours creating a treacherous walking environment for all. Well, we have experienced it and are here to help! Here are our must-haves during your stay in Fernie and beyond.

A winter jacket Likely, you packed one for your trip or season in Fernie. But once here, realize it’s not quite enough. Fortunately you have options! Personally I have two jackets that can be paired or worn separately. A compact-puffy, which is my go-to and also a gore tex outer layer for those wet and/or windy days. Trench coats, especially if insulated, are also appreciated on the extra cold days!

Quality winter shoes or boots As described in the opening, conditions can be variable and change often in mountain towns. There are numerous options when it comes to what to wear on your tootsies… to keep them warm, to keep them dry, to keep you vertical. If you end up staying in Fernie for the long haul, you will likely acquire a range of footwear, but really a high-end insulated boot that is also waterproof will do the job and for those icy days, you can add cleats such as Yaktrax. When up exploring the trails, snowshoes are also a great addition and for the avid runner, gore tex runners with spikes are absolutely lifechanging.

Toques (Yes, plural) Ball caps don’t do the trick when it’s below zero and you want to keep your head

MATT KUHN PHOTO

warm and protected from the elements. Fortunately, toques (beanie, winter hat, knitted cap…) are a plenty in these parts with options for every occasion. The mountain adventure, morning coffee date, pre and post athletic class, night out on the town… every colour and style you desire is at your finger tips in this mountain town!

Base layers A fitted bamboo, synthetic or merino wool layer against your skin is great at wicking moisture and helping you fight the temperatures. Merino specifically is great at trapping air to keep you warm, or if too warm the fibres relax to release this air to cool you down. It is also naturally antibacterial, decreasing the stink factor! From stylish to purely functional, you’ll find a variety of options throughout Fernie.

Accessories Mitts or gloves, chunky scarves, warm socks, a stylish pair of shades to reflect that glare from the snow or the sunshine on bright days, and an efficient ice scraper to de-ice your car on those frosty mornings

are all must-have items to add to your list this winter season! It just takes scraping a windshield with a credit card, barehands freezing and the sun blinding you in the process, to understand why.

(Fernie-branded) travel mug Not only will a travel mug keep your beverage of choice warm (or cold) prior to or après today’s adventures, it will decrease your need for single-use cups and lids and also take you back to your time spent in this magical community with every sip in future. Bonus: finding just the right reusable “Fernie” branded vessel for you is on its own a fun experience and a great way to learn more about this town and all it has to offer! Take the time while here to explore the many shops along Main Street in the Historic Downtown, on 7th Ave just off the Highway, and also those gems just off the beaten path. Finding the items on this list will be easy, the challenge is making a choice between so many fantastic options. We wish you luck, and warmth during your stay in Fernie.

Kim Love

Fernie Hotel and Pub I grew up in Singapore before moving to Australia when I was 17 and thus acquired my Aussie accent! In Australia I earned a degree in Environmental Science, with the goal one day to work in the outdoors, something in my field, perhaps in forestry. But before all that I wanted an adventure. While I was young I thought I’d go to Canada to do the “ski bum thing” with the intention of checking out all the mountain towns. My dad was big into skiing and made a yearly trip to visit a friend in Whitefish, and he suggested I ski Fernie. I arrived in 2014 and after a season with RCR ended I started working at Happy Cow. I taught myself how to ski that first winter and as they say, “I came for winter and stayed for the summer!” This town is wonderful. If I had to pick a favourite run on the ski hill it would Cedar Ridge, watch for me there next powder day! The Fernie Hotel and Pub has been my place of employment for the past four years. I enjoy conversation with the locals, they are a valuable resource for Fernie secrets. I’ve learned about local powder stashes, how to access fantastic hikes and lakes, and I’ve even had a regular customer source me a good local deal on my mountain bike! The Fernie is celebrating 20 years this December, come in and say hello or to watch a game of football, enjoy a burger and beer, or to the attend the popular (and a local favourite) Friday Night Meat Draw!

These are a Few of our Favourite Things BY Krista Turcasso

ROTISSERIE CHICKEN AT THE BRIDGE BISTRO V. CROOME PHOTO

One thing you should be prepared for during your time here is to continually be pleasantly surprised. By the effortless champagne powder. By the friendly, knowledgeable residents. By the variety and diverse nature of the recreational opportunities. By the ways in which you can unwind and recharge. And last but most certainly not least, by the calibre of the culinary experiences and locally-produced libations on offer. To help you in your journey, here are just a few of our favourites. We highly recommend getting out there and tantalizing your tastebuds to ensure you uncover your own hidden gems, as this list is but a wee sample of Fernie’s best! The perfect place to start is Fernie Brewing Company. Located just off Highway 3, this brewery has a beautiful tasting room and offers flights allowing you to try up to five different beers. Started by a local family, FBC has enthusiastic staff and is very involved in the community. The flights are part of their “Cheers for Charity” campaign, raising money for various organizations in town each month.

Coffee more your thing? Lucky for you, we have two roasting establishments! Beanpod roasts small batches in-house alongside their extravagant and divine chocolate making. Just down the street on Second Avenue, you will find Rooftop Coffee Roasters and their new café and tasting room. What is really cool about both Beanpod and Rooftop is that they are family owned and run. Rooftop actually began with the son (who was still in high school) and his passion for coffee. Looking for something a tad stronger? Just around the corner on First Avenue you’ll find Fernie Distillers with one of the few female distillers in Canada. A beautifully renovated space with very knowledgable staff, an

enticing cocktail menu and bottles of their small-batch No. 9 Mine Vodka, Fernie Fog Liqueur and Prospector Gin for sale awaits you. On to food. Wow, this is really tough! Let’s go by time of day. It’s first thing in the morning, and you’re looking for something quick before heading out on an adventure. Big Bang Bagels it is! We love the Mr. Fernie with spinach and sprouts… but you can always have bacon instead! For the slower-paced or those recovering from a night out, you can’t go wrong with the Blue Toque located in the FAVOURITE THINGS continued on next page

THE BISTRO AT PARK PLACE LODGE ANDREW RICHARDS PHOTO / PARK PLACE LODGE

historic Arts Station. Try the Huevos del Carmen. Delish. Looking for something more traditional? The Bistro at the Park Place Lodge will deliver. On to lunch. When at the hill and looking to give those quads a break or feed the mini rippers to ensure they can do a couple more laps on the Deer Chair or Mighty Moose, you have some options. The Rusty Edge boasts large booths with fantastic views of the mountain, (great for those night-skiing evenings when your kids are hot-lapping and you’re enjoying a quiet pint indoors). Our kids love the pizza (just cheese, mom!), and so do we! Try The Angelica. In town? Head to Lunchbox, where the wraps and bowls are fresh and fast. Tip - you can turn any wrap into a bowl by having it served over rice! My go-to is the Gringo, and the kids enjoy the A-Z Platter. On cold, winter days I also tend to order whichever curry is on!

The evening has arrived, time to unwind and have fun. For après at the hill, the Griz Bar is THE place to be. Re-hash the day’s lines over a cold pint and make sure to order the nachos. Looking for a more relaxed environment? Try the Cirque, and order the mussels and a crisp glass of BC white. In town, the Bridge Bistro is where we typically go with the kids and the Heritage Rotisserie Chicken makes you feel right at home! You might even consider the “Ultimate Meal” after a big day of adventure, Ribs and Chicken with all the sides. Yamagoya is also a family favourite, ordering the gyoza upon arrival to satisfy those hangry chicklets. I love the Toro Aburi Nigiri (I don’t suggest introducing your kids to this one, folks), and any one of the Ramen bowls is a sure thing on a cold winter’s day. For a date night, we enjoy Nevados! Start with the Patacones and a bowl of the Tortilla Soup, follow with Baja Pescado and Jerk Chicken Tacos. Tip: you can put your name on the wait list, and hit up a pub for an appetizer while you wait!

The Northern (wings), Brickhouse (truffle fries) and the Fernie Pub (potato skins) are just a few steps away. The Curry Bowl is also a regular with us, and they know our order well. One Pad Thai and one Bombay Chicken Curry, please! For a more quiet and intimate setting, don’t forget about Infinitea! The tapas and cocktail menus make this a great place for sharing. For the late night snacks, try Fernie Pizza and Pasta or Elk Valley Pizza. Both offer items beyond pizza, and deliver to your door! Last but not least, dessert! Fernie is home to the absolutely wonderful and naturallycreated Happy Cow, loved by all ages and tastes. One daughter loves the Raspberry Sorbet, the other straight up Vanilla. Personally, it’s all about the homemade Ice Cream Sandwiches. Did you know you can now decide which ice cream to use in said sandwich? Yes, please!

winter 2019|20 › where to stay

WHERE TO STAY Where you lay your head during your travels is nearly as important as where you decide to travel to! You’ve already chosen well with Fernie. Hopefully we can help you in finding the appropriate accommodation. Peruse through our accommodation guide, which includes all available choices from cozy bed and breakfasts to hotel and motels to condos. Alongside these options are accommodation and property management services, which can help you in your search. Good luck, we hope you find the perfect fit for your stay in Fernie!

David Giles Raging Elk Hostel

My desire to finally slow down and enjoy life is what brought me to Fernie. The combination of my business background and love of skiing made the accommodation sector a natural fit. It may sound over the top, but Fernie has absolutely exceeded all my expectations when it comes to living and working, to be able to get off work at The Raging Elk and be skiing 20 minutes later at an epic mountain is beyond words. I have also found that the town folk of Fernie are like-minded, kind and compassionate. They truly have an appreciation of what Mother Nature has given us and they are fiercely protective of it! I would also like to sincerely thank the town of Fernie for being so welcoming! I believe the accommodation sector will continue to grow as the trend towards outdoor experiences in Fernie increases and its many health benefits are better understood. Q. In my opinion what makes Fernie stand out from other mountain towns is… A. It seems to me Mother Nature played favourites with Fernie and created her Mountain Masterpiece that is second to none in the Rockies. The array of quality restaurants, unbelievable music/artistic talent and trails from our front doors makes it unbeatable. I have been inspired to pick up a guitar! Q. The best part of any Fernie day in winter is...

KRISTA TURCASSO PHOTO

A. My best start to any Fernie day is waking up on your day off and looking out the window immediately to see 20-40 cm of fresh snow on the ground! Q. My preferred way to unwind after a day of play is... A. After the long ski day is done my preferred way to unwind is at the Kodiak Lounge with a cool P9 from Fernie Brewery during Happy Hour. Then it’s across the street to Yamagoya for some sushi and then finally back to the

Elk for Jam night or wherever the music is happening. Q. A favourite secret Fernie stash of mine (one I’m willing to share, anyway) is... A. Having been here a relatively short time I would say my favourite stash is Fernie itself. I truly believe that Fernie is the best kept secret in Canada. This is now my home and I hope to positively contribute.

winter 2019|20 › REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT

REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT It’s not uncommon to begin looking into the real estate market during or after a stay in Fernie. And why not? Beautiful scenery, quick access to the best recreational activities imaginable, a thriving and vibrant community… living in Fernie is truly living the dream. It’s an exciting time in this regard, with developments such as Montane, The Cedars and property at Fernie Alpine Resort. In town, there is a lot of movement in housing. Visit one of the realtors’ sites included in the listings on page 78 and you will see what is currently available. There are always great opportunities for fixer uppers, or move-in ready houses. All the best, we hope to welcome you soon as a resident or second-home owner of Fernie!

Jeff Wallace JK Mechanical

I moved from Ontario to BC to be a ski bum as soon as I could. The fall of 1998 I found Fernie and I never looked back. In 2001 one of my first plumbing jobs was at the ski hill sewage treatment plant. John Kiely was on the crew and he may have lost his lunch more than once on that job. That’s the only way you can do that kind of job, having a buddy there laughing with you. Almost twenty years later I am up at the ski hill again, this time working on the infrastructure so Fernie Alpine Resort can continue their developments. When I first started working in the trades, Fernie had a slow season. It was really common to get laid off for part of the winter and ski. Now we build throughout the year. We have been so lucky in Fernie to have such consistent growth in the building sector. Some of the larger projects that JK Mechanical has worked on really challenge us in all aspects of our trades and allow us to explore new technologies. It’s great to take that knowledge with us to every new project, regardless of size. It helps to move the future of plumbing and heating forward. I feel grateful to operate a business in this tight knit community that really supports small business.

SERVICES By now you have come to the conclusion that it’s the community and the people that live in and visit Fernie that truly make the town. What is it about the people? They are involved and invested. They host events, volunteer their time, sit on boards, raise funds for worthy organizations, provide services, create opportunities… from the individual providing information at the Chamber of Commerce or Fernie Museum, to those spending days and days a year improving safety on the slopes, these individuals are everywhere and are a great example to live by. Take a look around to recognize and appreciate the many services you come across during your stay in Fernie. We have a feeling that these encounters will positively impact your experience.

Lauren Miholic WorkBC Centre

Living in Fernie while working in the service sector is a perfect combination for me. I’ve been here for just over two years now, working in the WorkBC program. I completed my Social Work Degree from University of Calgary in 2014 and started working in the service sector right away, first at a non-profit called Calgary Scope Society, working with adults with developmental disabilities and mental health issues to live meaningful lives in their communities. After a few years, my partner, Rudy, and I were craving more rock climbing and skiing adventures and decided to move away from the city and into the mountains. While it was a challenging adjustment at times, we are very happily settled into Fernie. I am employed by Kootenay Employment Services, where we deliver WorkBC, along with a couple new programs to our area: Aspire and Encore. Aspire is a program for youth ages 18-24 and Encore is for ages 55+. Both programs start with four weeks of paid classroom training, which includes a wide variety of employment readiness workshops. After the four weeks is complete, participants have the opportunity to do a work placement. Through WorkBC, we have even more tools and ways to help job seekers achieve employment and to help employers meet their needs. The service sector in the Elk Valley is always evolving and growing along with residents and what is needed. Specific to employment, I love seeing a shift towards inclusive hiring

and overall embracing diverse abilities. We have a great collection of community resources within the Elk Valley’s service sector, all doing great work, and I think that is something that makes Fernie a wonderful place to be.

A. The energy you feel in town or at the mountain. Everyone is always excited to ski/ board and you can feel it!

Q. In my opinion what makes Fernie stand out from other mountain towns is…

A. Hanging out with my cats or bouldering at College of the Rockies.

A. The amount of industry in the Elk Valley and all the community events in Fernie.

Q. A favourite secret Fernie stash of mine (one I’m willing to share, anyway) is...

Q. The best part of any Fernie day in winter is...

A. Not-so-secret, but I love exploring Cedar Bowl or touring around Tunnel Creek. There’s also a great stash of boulder problems at College of the Rockies climbing gym.

Q. My preferred way to unwind after a day of play is...

Committing to Safety On and Off-site At Teck, safety is a core value and we believe in everyone going home safe and healthy every day—even outside of work. That’s why we continue to support the Avalanche Canada South Rockies Field Team, who collect backcountry snow data in the Elk Valley and Crowsnest Pass for the detailed South Rockies avalanche report. Check the conditions before you set out at www.avalanche.ca

AVALANCHES

The Lizard Range surrounding Fernie Alpine Resort offers exciting and challenging terrain to the experienced traveller. There is a real danger of avalanches outside the ski boundaries. Skiers must be prepared to travel on their terms, there is no avalanche control or ski patrol rescue. The slopes are steep and the snow deep, travelling outside the boundary is recommended only for those people experienced and equipped to deal with serious avalanche dangers.

OUT OF BOUNDS SKIING

Fernie Alpine Resort is a mountain with some very steep terrain. Snow storms deposit huge amounts of fresh snow on the Lizard Range and Lizard Ridge. Avalanche conditions within the ski area can become extreme. During hazardous periods, areas within the ski area are closed until avalanche control work is complete and the skiing is safe. Be aware of closures and stay out of closed areas so that avalanche control teams can do their work. Lift pass suspensions may result.
