— Wedding Story — Mandy and Fraser P H OTO G R A P H E R N I C K N A U LT Nicknaultphotography.ca
Mandy and Fraser were married in the summer of 2017. Over the last several years, the couple has visited Fernie regularly including a yearly trip over New Year’s Eve, and felt like it was the perfect location for the celebration. “Fraser and I LOVE Fernie and we love the people. At any time of year, Fernie is a great place for a getaway whether camping, biking and hiking, golfing, rafting and of course the skiing and snowboarding. The people are really nice and I think there is also something about it that reminds us of Thunder Bay where we both grew up,” Mandy tells us. They chose to host the reception at the Lizard Creek Lodge. “It’s almost like a destination
wedding, it’s small enough and almost all our guests were there.” With 75 guests in attendance, Mandy and Fraser wanted an intimate weekend allowing everyone to spend a lot of time together. The theme was “casual, classic, mountain” that they also infused with their gratitude for one another and all who attended. “We tried to make it memorable and comfortable for everyone and the kids really enjoyed the dress up station, treats and Fernie wedding colouring picture we made. Everything was very simple and fun, but we tried to make sure it had a hint of elegance too.”
Mandy and Fraser chose Jeff McRae as their DJ, and couldn’t rave about him enough.
“He made the party, and really listened when we shared who would be there and what kind of music each liked. He was even able to throw in a few surprises that were on point and made the night memorable, and was an entertainer which the kids enjoyed.” Nick Nault was their photographer, “Nick was awesome, and patient. He did a great job of capturing the day. Fraser and I have never taken the best pictures together (it’s a running joke) so getting some amazing photos of us was really special.” Nick took them to memorable locations the couple have spent a lot of time over the years biking and skiing. “It’s nice to have those memories captured on film,” says Mandy. 7

Q&A Why did you choose to get married in Fernie?
Over the weekend, Mandy and Fraser organized multiple group events including a hike up to Island Lake Lodge, cliff jumping at Silver Springs (which turned into a pizza party because of the weather), and also provided information on their favourite places to eat and what not to miss.
Overall, the couple felt fortunate to have everyone come together from so far away. “We were so lucky that so many people were able to make the trip. Now, whenever we come to Fernie it brings back the memories of such a special time in our lives.”
Well, we weren’t sure where to have our wedding, we were thinking Calgary or somewhere close by. We went for our annual New Year’s ski trip to Fernie and it was during that trip that we realized we needed to invite all our friends here. They just had to see how beautiful it is! There is so much to do for everyone and we knew it would be a great place to have a wedding. Also, it was easy for both our Canadian and American friends to get to. What is your favourite moment of your wedding day?
That’s tough. Probably when I stole Fraser’s pocket square to wipe my nose/eyes during the ceremony. We both laughed. Also, our family and friends were really pivotal in bringing the wedding to life. The rehearsal
dinner, ceremony, speeches and the dance party - it was really the great friends coming together that made it all work and many of them went above and beyond throughout the week to make it all happen. What advice would you give those planning their own wedding day?
Make sure to take the time to stop and look around, those snapshots will be something you reflect on and carry, making you smile for the rest of your life. What were some unique elements to your wedding that really stand out - things you tried to do differently?
We wanted to show our friends and family from the east what the west has to offer. From staying right on the mountain at Lizard Creek Lodge, to the activities we planned such as hiking, mountain biking and visiting the town, our guests got to experience all the things we enjoy about Fernie.

— Wedding Story — Megan and Jonathan P H OTO G R A P H E R 6 : 8 P H OTO G R A P H Y 68photography.com
Megan and Jonathan experienced a true winter wedding set at Island Lake Lodge in December of 2017. Their day began with breakfast at the Tamarack Lodge, where they were able to meet with their friends and family.
After breakfast, a group of “dedicated fitness fanatics” performed a short dance that later made its way into the reception. Then, Megan took them through a yoga sequence and meditation to set a positive mood for the day. Feeling grounded, Megan retreated to ready herself for the ceremony. Mel of Sparrow Hair and Leah of Decoro Portraits “brought to life our wedding day glam,” and Megan remembers many laughs and tears being
Q&A
shared throughout the process, while Kevan of 6:8 Photography captured the moments on film. Jon and his bandmates were busy with the logistics of the music for the ceremony and reception, after which he got ready himself. Once both bride and groom were set, they met outside for the first look. “Excitement could not be contained, it was a simple and profound moment to look at one another knowing this is the beginning of the best days of our lives,” Megan says.
Kevan then took them on a winter photo adventure down by the lake. “It was cold, but we couldn’t tell,” she remembers. “Besides my feet!”
After photos, the ceremony began on the deck of the Bear Lodge where Wedding Commissioner Jennifer Cronin performed the ceremony. Before saying “I Do” Megan and Jon sang “Til Kingdom Come” for the guests. This alongside other elements, including a love story being read, personally written vows, and Jennifer’s meaningful words, made the ceremony light, unique and personal - just as Megan had hoped.
Why did you choose to get married in Fernie?
The guests then moved over to the Tamarack Lodge where the reception was held. “The staff at Island Lake seamlessly transitioned us all, and the dinner was fantastic!” The party continued at the Bear Lodge, where Megan and Jon kicked off the dancing to “Classy Girl” by the Lumineers followed by a fatherdaughter dance to “Dream” by the Everly Brothers.
To build a day you can enjoy. The best weddings are the ones where the bride and groom are having the times of their lives! Build support from others and surround yourself with your favourite people.
A prosecco toast was shared by all, followed by photos, many hugs and cocktails.
An evening photo shoot, and then dancing until 1am completed the event. “Our wedding experience was simply unreal. A magical moment held in our hearts for all time.”
Fernie is where we put it together that we liked each other. It was on a bike ride up Lazy Lizard where we first discovered Island Lake Lodge What is your favourite moment of your wedding day? The meaningful and unique ceremony!
What advice would you give those planning their own wedding day?
What were some unique elements to your wedding that really stand out things you tried to do differently? We created a playlist that can be followed on Spotify, which was quite popular with the guests. We spent the entire summer pulling it together to get people dancing.

— Wedding Story — Lisa and Holly P H OTO G R A P H E R K Y L E H A M I LT O N Kylehamiltonphotography.com
Lisa and Holly were married in Fernie in the fall of 2014. They chose September long weekend, and an outdoor wedding ceremony and reception.
“We wanted to embrace the warmth of the afternoon sunshine, the not yet too cool evenings, and the hues of early fall native grasses and the ironic beauty of the invasive ‘wild’ flowers that grow out of control each year along the trail, and open spaces from our home to the river where we were getting married.”
The ceremony took place on a gravel bar along the Elk River with the Lizard Range as the backdrop. The day before, they arranged river rocks and driftwood to create a circle
to encompass their family and friends and an aisle to highlight their path together.
“It is amazing how we take for granted the beauty in the places we spend time in everyday. We were struggling to pick a place to get married that felt right and then one day while floating the river we came around the bend of the river near our home and realized it was the perfect spot.” Holly wore a long and elegant swooping cowl back dress and Lisa, who was interested in a dress with vintage lace look wore her grandmother’s wedding dress with alterations that embraced its history with a modern touch. Even more special was the confetti found within the lace from her
grandparents’ wedding in 1953. Both Holly and Lisa’s hair was done in town by Sparrow.
The couple chose their home for the reception, calling it a ‘blockyard’ party. “It was the perfect marriage between a block party and a backyard gathering. We had already spent countless hours transforming our outdoor space into a great place to spend time.
It was also really important to us that our big community of family and friends from across the country share in the celebrations, and hosting the party at our home was very much conducive to ensuring many could attend. All told there were 150 people, including 20 kids.”

Q&A Why did you choose to get married in Fernie? We have built our lives together here in Fernie. We love this community. We never even considered getting married anywhere else. Plus Fernie looks pretty sharp in photographs! What is your favourite moment of your wedding day?
Though we were nervous, reciting our own vows was really special. It’s one of the few times you can share special moments, memories and feelings with the love of your life and your friends and family don’t have a choice but to sit and listen ha.
How did they make this happen? Holly and Lisa got a permit to close the road adjacent to their home, and placed party tents in the street. The garden shed was transformed into a bar, a taco buffet and potluck salad bar was set up in the garage, and they created ‘hang out spaces’ throughout the yard, complete with a bonfire and yard games.
They kept the décor pretty simple, choosing to, “highlight our shared appreciation for bringing together the old with the new with a natural feel. All our décor was created with items that were borrowed, found, or bought second hand with exception of the beautiful flowers and greenery from Green Petal.”
Music was a focal point throughout the day, including a violin playing as the guests were led to the location, friends singing them down the aisle, the couple singing “Ho, Hey” as they danced down the trail and onto their scooter, and the Amelie soundtrack playing over dinner. A friend made a playlist that kept the party going late into the night.
While a theme for the wedding was never discussed, looking back the couple can see that the common thread was, “having a really good time with family and friends amongst the beauty of our everyday places and spaces, and ensuring it authentically reflected who we are as women and how we have and continue to grow our life and love together within the lifestyle we choose to lead here in Fernie.”
Also, the moment we rode away in our dresses on our 81 Honda Scooter. It was a great symbol of our journey as it was the very first purchase we made together as a new couple years ago only months into dating.
What advice would you give those planning their own wedding day? Have fun and take all the moments you can to pause and enjoy your special day, it goes by so quickly. Don’t sweat the small stuff and don’t forget to put drinking water out on a hot day! Oh yeah, and print your wedding photos so you can enjoy them! What were some unique elements to your wedding that really stand out things you tried to do differently?
We walked down the aisle together rather than one of us waiting at the front for the other, we wanted to share that experience. Being ‘given away’ seemed like a tradition of the past that was not relevant to us.

— Wedding Tips — Planning Overview BY ANGELA MAGLIOCCO
MATT KUHN PHOTOS
So you’ve said “YES” and you’re officially engaged! It’s time to start planning your wedding, which can leave you feeling overwhelmed with all the decisions you are about to make. Here’s a little overview to help make this process easier, more enjoyable and stress-free. You have picked your wedding date and, most importantly, your venue; next is the fun stuff. The style, colours and decorations you choose should be classy and authentic but should also reflect both of your personalities. Are you drawn to traditional classic themes or more modern?
Invitations will be your first impression to your family and friends, so have them reflect your personality and aesthetic preferences.
Creative decorations can leave a lasting impression on your guests as well. This will involve any of the following: welcome signs, guest seating charts, printed individual menus, table numbers, photo backdrops, table centrepieces, table runners, linens, flowers, greenery, banners, a kids’ entertainment table, guest thank you gifts, chair covers, light strings. I myself am drawn to more simple, clean decorations, but everyone has their own taste and style and the goal is to stick with it across all of your pieces.
Flowers are essential; they create the mood, show your style and bring life to the room. Remember to take into account what is in season and will last the longest.
Table centrepieces are also vital as they act as the focal point on your dining tables. Long-style tables usually have multiple whereas smaller or round tables have their own individual decorations. The centrepieces should also be in proportion to the venue space (i.e., larger centrepieces for larger venues). They should also be consistent with other elements being used throughout the ceremony and reception. To maintain position on the table, give your centrepiece a
base, something to build upon. This could be anything from a plate, a wooden slab, basket, lantern, etc. From there, you can add just about anything; candles, flowers, greenery, vases, glass vessels, rocks, petals, framed pictures, pinecones, and more. Interestingly, the current style is to place certain decorations, like candles, in odd numbers.
The menu can be challenging. Wedding trends have shown that guests care more and more about the food being served. If dinner is satisfying and elegant, guests will definitely remember it for years to come! It is important to take into consideration food allergies and whether or not any of your guests are vegetarians. The food is not only about taste, but presentation as well. You will be serving this food on your wedding day and want to make sure it’s perfect and that your guests are full.
Choosing a respected wedding photographer should be a top priority. They are the ones
who capture your special day and all the precious moments and memories that will last you a lifetime. You will see your flowers wilt, your cake eaten, your invites tossed, your dress worn, the shoes will go back into a box; however, your photos will be forever! Make sure you capture your day and your story, don’t regret not hiring a professional wedding photographer.
Just remember, regardless of anything else, you and your guests need to have fun on your wedding day. Consider hiring an experienced event planner to be there every step of the way, providing advice and making sure your day is a memorable one. Angela Magliocco is an event planner with Silver Lining Events. Whether your event is big or small, sophisticated or simple, they work to remove the worry and stress to allow you to enjoy your day. — Wedding Tips — Customized Wedding Jewellery Where to Start B Y M AT T M A R T I N
We’d like to get custom made wedding bands, where do we start? There’s really two initial considerations when it comes to custom made wedding bands: design and budget. Most people start to develop these by referencing what’s out there, having a look online and checking out a few shops. Many jewellery designers will have a style they’re comfortable working in, a common aesthetic throughout their work, if this appeals to you then you’re on the right track. If you’re on the hunt for originality more than likely you’ll want to speak directly to the goldsmith. Goldsmithing is a craft that offers a wide range of techniques with many different directions you can go. Initiating a dialogue will help to establish a sense of cost and value as well as design options. Are there limitations in the scope of custom work they offer? Consider your timeline, is it doable? It shouldn’t take long to establish rapport and a sense of trust. Testimonials are also invaluable, does what other people are saying resonate with you? I want to surprise her, how do I get a ring I know she’ll love?
I always advise including your prospective fiancé in the process as much as possible. In most cases marriage is a topic of regular conversation and an engagement ring is
already anticipated. An element of surprise can still be retained by consulting together with a designer and achieving basic design direction. This initial discussion often covers diamond or gemstone shape, setting style and colour of gold or platinum. Following this a second consultation ensues (without the bride to be) where final design details are decided. In my opinion a partial sacrifice of surprise for gaining a ring she’ll adore is well worth it. He doesn’t seem to care about his ring….
It’s not uncommon for men to lack enthusiasm when it comes to ‘his’ wedding band. In my experience being in a working studio environment creates interest and when shown a design that’s original and well crafted it’s usually ‘game on.’ Here’s a few of my ‘go to’ design considerations for custom made wedding bands: • A wedding band should wear well with an engagement ring, the design should compliment and not compete. • If the wedding band will be worn regularly without the engagement ring, i.e. travelling abroad, etc, then it should have a stand alone design confidence.
MATT MARTIN PHOTOS
• Lifestyle is also an important consideration when featuring a diamond or gemstone, certain styles will be better suited for active individuals and vocations. • If a motif or theme is being featured, is it going to wear well and last for many years to come?
Matt Martin is a Goldsmith at Element 7 Nine, located in the Mugshots building at 592, 3rd Ave generally open 10am-5pm Monday through Friday. We have all been to a wedding where the reception was dull and boring. Regardless if the bride was stunning or the groom’s speech had you in hysterics, a guest’s memory of the wedding hinges on the party! We have provided you with a few tips to ensure you throw a party to remember. Should I have an open bar? If you decide to have an open bar be prepared to see substantial waste. When there is no monetary control (even two dollars), guests are not as concerned. An open bar allows little to no control over guest intake, this can initiate higher than normal safety incidents, i.e. slips and trips on the dance floor, aggressive guest behaviour, or even worse, drinking and driving. Save the cash you are going to spend on an open bar, and spend it on that honeymoon! Liquor License A liquor license is mandatory when using a public venue. A BC Liquor license can be obtained online at specialevents.bcldb.com/ help. You should hear back within two to four weeks, so allow yourself enough time to apply if necessary.
Environmentally Friendly Plastic straws are dreadful! Ask your bartender to shake it, stir it, but please don’t ask for a straw. It is also possible to order
KYLE HAMILTON PHOTOGRAPHY
biodegradable cups for your bar. Surprisingly, these cups are now cheaper to purchase than regular plastic cups. Lastly, ensure that you have recycle bins set up throughout the venue. It is our responsibility to ensure we do not forget about the environment throughout the party. Wine Selection Why not spend an afternoon a few months prior to the wedding brewing your own wine with your future spouse? Not only is this affordable to do, but is also a fun date idea before the big day! As an added bonus, you can order custom labels and use your wine as wedding favours. Beer Selection Ensure that you have a few Fernie Brewing Company beers on your drink menu. They are always a hit, especially with out of town guests! We suggest having a tasting a few
Champagne Toast Ditch the champagne toast! Although beautiful, guests typically have one sip and move onto something more pleasing to their individual palate. If you are super keen on having a toast, customize it! In the past we’ve seen mulled wine (great for a winter wedding!), or a Build Your Own Caesar Bar. The more you can make your wedding your own, the more memorable it will be.
What to Order Keep in mind when placing your liquor order that you cannot please everyone. Although you want to have a diverse drink menu for your guests, we don’t suggest ordering a single bottle of a particular liquor since that is all your great uncle drinks. You will be left with the unused portion and if it is not something you will consume after the wedding, it often ends up in the garbage! Stick with the tried and trues (Rum, Vodka, Gin, for example) and bring plenty of mix and a few fun garnishes so that guests can customize their cocktail that way. Budget A great thing about the bar is that you can really make it as expensive or as cost-effective as you like. If you forego an event bartending service, we typically recommend budgeting

While everyone has arrived in Fernie to celebrate your big day, your guests will also have the opportunity to explore some of the best on offer in this mountain town. When travelling to attend a wedding, I have always appreciated when hosts have included some suggestions with the Welcome Package. If you plan on putting one together, consider doing the same with some of our insider suggestions! 1. Mountains
Regardless of season, the mountains will be calling upon arrival. In spring, consider a lower elevation hike. Fairy Creek Falls are easy to access from the Chamber of Commerce/Info Centre just off Hwy #3, great for all levels and ages, and rewarding. In summer, the options are truly endless. The Fernie Golf Club celebrated 100 years in 2018, and after a round on this course you’ll understand its allure. Not only does it offer some of the best scenic views in town, the course is well-designed and engaging. As the seasons change and colours shape the valley, biking on gold-covered trails, littered with larch needles is a beautiful way to spend an afternoon. A cruise up Lazy Lizard for lunch at Island Lake Lodge is something your guests won’t soon forget. When the snow begins to fly, Fernie Alpine Resort offers

They say money is the root of all evil and it can certainly cause a lot of problems when planning for your big day. As the tradition for the parents of the bride to pick up the tab wanes more and more couples are faced with having to pick up the entire tab for their wedding. How do you decide what your budget should be, and how do you allocate it?
In economic terms it is said that you should allocate 10% of your combined annual income.
There is also the average breakdown, percentage wise, which goes something like this: Reception: 48-50% Ceremony: 2-3 percent Attire: 8-10 percent Flowers: 8-10 percent Entertainment/Music: 8-10 percent Photography/Videography: 10-12 percent Stationery: 2-3 percent Wedding Rings: 2-3 percent Parking/Transportation: 2-3 percent Gifts: 2-3 percent Miscellaneous: 8 percent You should also allow for 5% overage.
These ‘averages’ soon become rules because it makes it easier to reason where the money

is being spent. But could there be a different way to look at it?
Awhile back, a friend of a friend was getting married and they were overwhelmed by all the things that ‘should’ be included on their big day. A consult with a wedding planner was made and this is the advice they were given. Pick the three most important aspects for you in a wedding and spend your money there. Forget the rest. I think this is the best advice anyone can give about planning a wedding, even if you have a million-dollar budget. It gives clarity to why you are getting married. The meaning of it all, how you celebrate it and honour the commitment you are about to make.
Some may say I want to look the most beautiful I have ever looked on this day we choose to commit our lives together. (Insert the word handsome here guys, we know you want to look amazing for your partner too.)
Is there a place that is the two of you? Where you feel connected in a deeper way than in a more traditional setting? Choosing a place such as this can often be a great way to save money, as they can be free or only charge nominal fees.
Are the two of you foodies? Spend all your time, energy and money on a fabulous wedding feast. Do you love to dance the night away?
You get the idea. This is not a novel concept, but it does give the two of you something to focus and agree on beyond finances. A wedding has never been made or broken by the wedding favours. If a friend feels slighted because you chose not to allow plus ones for the sake of it, are they truly supporting you and your marriage? The day goes by so fast, don’t try and cram too much into it. Choose three things and allow the time for those three things to be appreciated by all.
